गन्धर्व उवाच ।
एवमुक्त्वा ततस्तूर्णं जगामोर्ध्वमनिन्दिता ।
स तु राजा पुनर्भूमौ तत्रैव निपपात ह ॥१॥
1. gandharva uvāca ,
evamuktvā tatastūrṇaṁ jagāmordhvamaninditā ,
sa tu rājā punarbhūmau tatraiva nipapāta ha.
1. gandharvaḥ uvāca evam uktvā tataḥ tūrṇam jagāma ūrdhvam
aninditā sa tu rājā punaḥ bhūmau tatra eva nipapāta ha
1. The Gandharva said: Having spoken thus, the blameless maiden then quickly ascended. But that king, on the other hand, again fell down right there on the ground.
अमात्यः सानुयात्रस्तु तं ददर्श महावने ।
क्षितौ निपतितं काले शक्रध्वजमिवोच्छ्रितम् ॥२॥
2. amātyaḥ sānuyātrastu taṁ dadarśa mahāvane ,
kṣitau nipatitaṁ kāle śakradhvajamivocchritam.
2. amātyaḥ sa-anuyātraḥ tu tam dadarśa mahā-vane |
kṣitau nipatitam kāle śakra-dhvajam iva ucchritam
2. The minister, along with his retinue, saw him in the great forest. He lay fallen on the ground, like a grand banner of Indra (śakradhvaja) that has been cast down at the appropriate moment.
तं हि दृष्ट्वा महेष्वासं निरश्वं पतितं क्षितौ ।
बभूव सोऽस्य सचिवः संप्रदीप्त इवाग्निना ॥३॥
3. taṁ hi dṛṣṭvā maheṣvāsaṁ niraśvaṁ patitaṁ kṣitau ,
babhūva so'sya sacivaḥ saṁpradīpta ivāgninā.
3. tam hi dṛṣṭvā mahā-īṣv-āsam nir-aśvam patitam kṣitau
| babhūva saḥ asya sacivaḥ sam-pradīptaḥ iva agninā
3. Indeed, upon seeing him, the great archer (maheṣvāsa), fallen on the ground and without his horse, his minister became as if inflamed with fire.
त्वरया चोपसंगम्य स्नेहादागतसंभ्रमः ।
तं समुत्थापयामास नृपतिं काममोहितम् ॥४॥
4. tvarayā copasaṁgamya snehādāgatasaṁbhramaḥ ,
taṁ samutthāpayāmāsa nṛpatiṁ kāmamohitam.
4. tvarayā ca upa-saṅgamya snehāt āgata-sam-bhramaḥ
| tam sam-ut-thāpayāmāsa nṛpatim kāma-mohitam
4. And approaching him swiftly, agitated out of affection, he helped that king, who was deluded by desire (kāma), to rise.
भूतलाद्भूमिपालेशं पितेव पतितं सुतम् ।
प्रज्ञया वयसा चैव वृद्धः कीर्त्या दमेन च ॥५॥
5. bhūtalādbhūmipāleśaṁ piteva patitaṁ sutam ,
prajñayā vayasā caiva vṛddhaḥ kīrtyā damena ca.
5. bhūtalāt bhūmipāla-īśam pitā iva patitam sutam |
prajñayā vayasā ca eva vṛddhaḥ kīrtyā damena ca
5. He lifted the lord of rulers from the ground as a father would a fallen son. He (the minister) was venerable due to his wisdom, age, fame, and self-control.
अमात्यस्तं समुत्थाप्य बभूव विगतज्वरः ।
उवाच चैनं कल्याण्या वाचा मधुरयोत्थितम् ।
मा भैर्मनुजशार्दूल भद्रं चास्तु तवानघ ॥६॥
6. amātyastaṁ samutthāpya babhūva vigatajvaraḥ ,
uvāca cainaṁ kalyāṇyā vācā madhurayotthitam ,
mā bhairmanujaśārdūla bhadraṁ cāstu tavānagha.
6. amātyaḥ tam sam-ut-thāpya babhūva
vigata-jvaraḥ | uvāca ca enam kalyāṇyā
vācā madhurayā utthitam | mā bhaiḥ
manuja-śārdūla bhadram ca astu tava anagha
6. Having lifted him up, the minister's distress subsided. And he spoke to the king, who had now risen, with sweet and auspicious words: 'Do not fear, O best of men! May good fortune (bhadra) be with you, O sinless one!'
क्षुत्पिपासापरिश्रान्तं तर्कयामास तं नृपम् ।
पतितं पातनं संख्ये शात्रवाणां महीतले ॥७॥
7. kṣutpipāsāpariśrāntaṁ tarkayāmāsa taṁ nṛpam ,
patitaṁ pātanaṁ saṁkhye śātravāṇāṁ mahītale.
7. kṣutpipāsāpariśrāntam tarkayām āsa tam nṛpam
patitam pātanam saṅkhye śātravāṇām mahītale
7. He considered that king, who, though exhausted by hunger and thirst and fallen on the ground, was still the vanquisher of enemies in battle.
वारिणाथ सुशीतेन शिरस्तस्याभ्यषेचयत् ।
अस्पृशन्मुकुटं राज्ञः पुण्डरीकसुगन्धिना ॥८॥
8. vāriṇātha suśītena śirastasyābhyaṣecayat ,
aspṛśanmukuṭaṁ rājñaḥ puṇḍarīkasugandhinā.
8. vāriṇā atha suśītena śiraḥ tasya abhyaṣecayat
aspṛśan mukuṭam rājñaḥ puṇḍarīkasugandhinā
8. Then, with very cool water, he sprinkled his head. He touched the king's crown with water fragrant like a lotus.
ततः प्रत्यागतप्राणस्तद्बलं बलवान्नृपः ।
सर्वं विसर्जयामास तमेकं सचिवं विना ॥९॥
9. tataḥ pratyāgataprāṇastadbalaṁ balavānnṛpaḥ ,
sarvaṁ visarjayāmāsa tamekaṁ sacivaṁ vinā.
9. tataḥ pratyāgataprāṇaḥ tat balam balavān nṛpaḥ
sarvam visarjayām āsa tam ekam sacivam vinā
9. After that, the powerful king, whose vitality had returned, dismissed his entire army, keeping only one minister.
ततस्तस्याज्ञया राज्ञो विप्रतस्थे महद्बलम् ।
स तु राजा गिरिप्रस्थे तस्मिन्पुनरुपाविशत् ॥१०॥
10. tatastasyājñayā rājño vipratasthe mahadbalam ,
sa tu rājā giriprasthe tasminpunarupāviśat.
10. tataḥ tasya ājñayā rājñaḥ vipratasthe mahat balam
saḥ tu rājā giriprasthe tasmin punaḥ upāviśat
10. Then, by that king's command, his great army departed. But the king himself sat down again on that mountain slope.
ततस्तस्मिन्गिरिवरे शुचिर्भूत्वा कृताञ्जलिः ।
आरिराधयिषुः सूर्यं तस्थावूर्ध्वभुजः क्षितौ ॥११॥
11. tatastasmingirivare śucirbhūtvā kṛtāñjaliḥ ,
ārirādhayiṣuḥ sūryaṁ tasthāvūrdhvabhujaḥ kṣitau.
11. tataḥ tasmin girivare śuciḥ bhūtvā kṛtāñjaliḥ
ārirādhayiṣuḥ sūryam tasthau ūrdhvabhujaḥ kṣitau
11. Then, on that excellent mountain, having purified himself and made an añjali (gesture of reverence), he stood on the ground with his arms raised, desiring to worship the sun.
जगाम मनसा चैव वसिष्ठमृषिसत्तमम् ।
पुरोहितममित्रघ्नस्तदा संवरणो नृपः ॥१२॥
12. jagāma manasā caiva vasiṣṭhamṛṣisattamam ,
purohitamamitraghnastadā saṁvaraṇo nṛpaḥ.
12. jagāma manasā ca eva vasiṣṭham ṛṣisattamam
purohitam amitraghnaḥ tadā saṃvaraṇaḥ nṛpaḥ
12. Then, King Saṃvaraṇa, the slayer of foes, mentally approached Vasiṣṭha, the foremost among sages and his royal priest.
नक्तंदिनमथैकस्थे स्थिते तस्मिञ्जनाधिपे ।
अथाजगाम विप्रर्षिस्तदा द्वादशमेऽहनि ॥१३॥
13. naktaṁdinamathaikasthe sthite tasmiñjanādhipe ,
athājagāma viprarṣistadā dvādaśame'hani.
13. naktamdinam atha ekasthe sthite tasmin janādhipe
atha ājagāma viprarṣiḥ tadā dvādaśame ahani
13. While that king remained alone, fixed in one place day and night, the brahmin sage then arrived on the twelfth day.
स विदित्वैव नृपतिं तपत्या हृतमानसम् ।
दिव्येन विधिना ज्ञात्वा भावितात्मा महानृषिः ॥१४॥
14. sa viditvaiva nṛpatiṁ tapatyā hṛtamānasam ,
divyena vidhinā jñātvā bhāvitātmā mahānṛṣiḥ.
14. sa viditvā eva nṛpatim tapatyā hṛtamānasam
divyena vidhinā jñātvā bhāvitātmā mahānṛṣiḥ
14. That great sage (mahānṛṣiḥ), whose spiritual essence (bhāvitātmā) was refined, having understood through a divine method that the king's mind was captivated by Tapati...
तथा तु नियतात्मानं स तं नृपतिसत्तमम् ।
आबभाषे स धर्मात्मा तस्यैवार्थचिकीर्षया ॥१५॥
15. tathā tu niyatātmānaṁ sa taṁ nṛpatisattamam ,
ābabhāṣe sa dharmātmā tasyaivārthacikīrṣayā.
15. tathā tu niyatātmānam sa tam nṛpatisattamam
ābabhāṣe sa dharmātmā tasya eva arthacikīrṣayā
15. Thus, that righteous soul (dharmātmā), desiring only his welfare, spoke to that best among kings who had such a disciplined mind (niyatātmānam).
स तस्य मनुजेन्द्रस्य पश्यतो भगवानृषिः ।
ऊर्ध्वमाचक्रमे द्रष्टुं भास्करं भास्करद्युतिः ॥१६॥
16. sa tasya manujendrasya paśyato bhagavānṛṣiḥ ,
ūrdhvamācakrame draṣṭuṁ bhāskaraṁ bhāskaradyutiḥ.
16. sa tasya manujendrasya paśyataḥ bhagavān ṛṣiḥ
ūrdhvam ācakrame draṣṭum bhāskaram bhāskaradyutiḥ
16. As that lord of men watched, the divine (bhagavān) sage, himself radiant like the sun, ascended upwards to see the Sun God.
सहस्रांशुं ततो विप्रः कृताञ्जलिरुपस्थितः ।
वसिष्ठोऽहमिति प्रीत्या स चात्मानं न्यवेदयत् ॥१७॥
17. sahasrāṁśuṁ tato vipraḥ kṛtāñjalirupasthitaḥ ,
vasiṣṭho'hamiti prītyā sa cātmānaṁ nyavedayat.
17. sahasrāṃśum tataḥ vipraḥ kṛtāñjaliḥ upasthitaḥ
vasiṣṭhaḥ aham iti prītyā sa ca ātmānaṃ nyavedayat
17. Then the brahmin, with folded hands, approached the thousand-rayed one. He joyfully introduced himself, saying, "I am Vasiṣṭha."
तमुवाच महातेजा विवस्वान्मुनिसत्तमम् ।
महर्षे स्वागतं तेऽस्तु कथयस्व यथेच्छसि ॥१८॥
18. tamuvāca mahātejā vivasvānmunisattamam ,
maharṣe svāgataṁ te'stu kathayasva yathecchasi.
18. tam uvāca mahātejāḥ vivasvān munisattamam
maharṣe svāgatam te astu kathayasva yathā icchasi
18. The greatly effulgent Vivasvān said to that best of sages. "Great sage, welcome to you. Please speak what you desire."
