संजय उवाच ।
विद्रुतं स्वबलं दृष्ट्वा वध्यमानं महात्मभिः ।
क्रोधेन महताविष्टः पुत्रस्तव विशां पते ॥१॥
1. saṁjaya uvāca ,
vidrutaṁ svabalaṁ dṛṣṭvā vadhyamānaṁ mahātmabhiḥ ,
krodhena mahatāviṣṭaḥ putrastava viśāṁ pate.

1. saṃjaya uvāca: viśām pate,
mahātmabhiḥ vadhyamānam vidrutam svabalam dṛṣṭvā,
tava putraḥ mahatā krodhena āviṣṭaḥ (abhūt).
1. Saṃjaya said: O lord of men (viśāṃ pate), having seen his own army (svabala) routed (vidruta) and being struck down (vadhyamāna) by the great souls (mahātmabhiḥ), your son (Duryodhana) was overcome (āviṣṭa) by great anger (krodha).
अभ्येत्य सहसा कर्णं द्रोणं च जयतां वरम् ।
अमर्षवशमापन्नो वाक्यज्ञो वाक्यमब्रवीत् ॥२॥
2. abhyetya sahasā karṇaṁ droṇaṁ ca jayatāṁ varam ,
amarṣavaśamāpanno vākyajño vākyamabravīt.
2. abhyetya sahasā karṇam droṇam ca jayatām varam
amarṣa-vaśam āpannaḥ vākyajñaḥ vākyam abravīt
2. (saḥ) sahasā karṇam ca droṇam jayatām varam abhyetya,
amarṣa-vaśam āpannaḥ vākyajñaḥ (san) vākyam abravīt.
2. Having quickly approached (abhyetya) Karṇa and Droṇa, the best among conquerors (jayatāṃ varam), he (Duryodhana), being overcome by indignation (amarṣavaśamāpanna) and skilled in speech (vākyajña), spoke these words (vākyam abravīt).
भवद्भ्यामिह संग्रामो क्रुद्धाभ्यां संप्रवर्तितः ।
आहवे निहतं दृष्ट्वा सैन्धवं सव्यसाचिना ॥३॥
3. bhavadbhyāmiha saṁgrāmo kruddhābhyāṁ saṁpravartitaḥ ,
āhave nihataṁ dṛṣṭvā saindhavaṁ savyasācinā.
3. bhavadbhyām iha saṃgrāmaḥ kruddhābhyām sam-pravartitaḥ
āhave nihatam dṛṣṭvā saindhavam savyasācinā

kruddhābhyām bhavadbhyām saṃgrāmaḥ saṃpravartitaḥ.
(tathāpi) savyasācinā saindhavam āhave nihatam dṛṣṭvā (kim phalam asti)?
3. Here, this battle (saṃgrāma) was instigated (saṃpravartita) by both of you (bhavadbhyām), who were angry (kruddhābhyām). Yet, (what use is it) having seen (dṛṣṭvā) Saindhava (Jayadratha) killed (nihata) in battle (āhave) by Savyasācin (Arjuna)?
निहन्यमानां पाण्डूनां बलेन मम वाहिनीम् ।
भूत्वा तद्विजये शक्तावशक्ताविव पश्यतः ॥४॥
4. nihanyamānāṁ pāṇḍūnāṁ balena mama vāhinīm ,
bhūtvā tadvijaye śaktāvaśaktāviva paśyataḥ.

4. You two (generals), though capable of securing victory for us, yet acting as if incapable, are watching my army being struck down by the strength of the Pāṇḍavas.
यद्यहं भवतोस्त्याज्यो न वाच्योऽस्मि तदैव हि ।
आवां पाण्डुसुतान्संख्ये जेष्याव इति मानदौ ॥५॥
5. yadyahaṁ bhavatostyājyo na vācyo'smi tadaiva hi ,
āvāṁ pāṇḍusutānsaṁkhye jeṣyāva iti mānadau.
5. yadi aham bhavatoḥ tyājyaḥ na vācyaḥ asmi tadā eva
hi āvām pāṇḍusutān saṅkhye jeṣyāvaḥ iti mānadau
5. yadi aham bhavatoḥ tyājyaḥ tadā eva hi mānadau āvām
pāṇḍusutān saṅkhye jeṣyāvaḥ iti na vācyaḥ asmi
5. If I am to be abandoned by you two, then, O givers of honor, you should not have said, 'We two will conquer the sons of Pāṇḍu in battle.'
तदैवाहं वचः श्रुत्वा भवद्भ्यामनुसंमतम् ।
कृतवान्पाण्डवैः सार्धं वैरं योधविनाशनम् ॥६॥
6. tadaivāhaṁ vacaḥ śrutvā bhavadbhyāmanusaṁmatam ,
kṛtavānpāṇḍavaiḥ sārdhaṁ vairaṁ yodhavināśanam.
6. tadā eva aham vacaḥ śrutvā bhavadbhyām anusaṃmatam
kṛtavān pāṇḍavaiḥ sārdham vairam yodhavināśanam
6. aham bhavadbhyām anusaṃmatam vacaḥ śrutvā tadaiva
pāṇḍavaiḥ sārdham yodhavināśanam vairam kṛtavān
6. Having heard that counsel (vacaḥ) approved by you two, I then indeed initiated hostility (vaira) with the Pāṇḍavas, an enmity that destroys warriors.
यदि नाहं परित्याज्यो भवद्भ्यां पुरुषर्षभौ ।
युध्येतामनुरूपेण विक्रमेण सुविक्रमौ ॥७॥
7. yadi nāhaṁ parityājyo bhavadbhyāṁ puruṣarṣabhau ,
yudhyetāmanurūpeṇa vikrameṇa suvikramau.

7. If I am not to be abandoned by you two, O best among men (puruṣarṣabha), then you two, O greatly valorous ones, should fight with suitable prowess.
वाक्प्रतोदेन तौ वीरौ प्रणुन्नौ तनयेन ते ।
प्रावर्तयेतां तौ युद्धं घट्टिताविव पन्नगौ ॥८॥
8. vākpratodena tau vīrau praṇunnau tanayena te ,
prāvartayetāṁ tau yuddhaṁ ghaṭṭitāviva pannagau.

8. Those two heroes, spurred on by your son's verbal taunt, initiated battle, just like two provoked snakes.
ततस्तौ रथिनां श्रेष्ठौ सर्वलोकधनुर्धरौ ।
शैनेयप्रमुखान्पार्थानभिदुद्रुवतू रणे ॥९॥
9. tatastau rathināṁ śreṣṭhau sarvalokadhanurdharau ,
śaineyapramukhānpārthānabhidudruvatū raṇe.
9. tataḥ tau rathinām śreṣṭhau sarvalokadhanurdharau
śaineyapramukhān pārthān abhidudruvatū raṇe
9. tataḥ rathinām śreṣṭhau sarvalokadhanurdharau

9. Then, those two, the foremost among charioteers and the greatest archers in all worlds, rushed towards the Pārthas, led by Śaineya (Sātyaki), in battle.
तथैव सहिताः पार्थाः स्वेन सैन्येन संवृताः ।
अभ्यवर्तन्त तौ वीरौ नर्दमानौ मुहुर्मुहुः ॥१०॥
10. tathaiva sahitāḥ pārthāḥ svena sainyena saṁvṛtāḥ ,
abhyavartanta tau vīrau nardamānau muhurmuhuḥ.
10. tathā eva sahitāḥ pārthāḥ svena sainyena saṃvṛtāḥ
abhyavartanta tau vīrau nardamānau muhuḥ muhuḥ
10. tathā eva svena sainyena sahitāḥ saṃvṛtāḥ pārthāḥ
nardamānau tau vīrau muhuḥ muhuḥ abhyavartanta
10. Similarly, the Pārthas, accompanied and surrounded by their own army, advanced towards those two heroes, who were roaring repeatedly.
अथ द्रोणो महेष्वासो दशभिः शिनिपुंगवम् ।
अविध्यत्त्वरितं क्रुद्धः सर्वशस्त्रभृतां वरः ॥११॥
11. atha droṇo maheṣvāso daśabhiḥ śinipuṁgavam ,
avidhyattvaritaṁ kruddhaḥ sarvaśastrabhṛtāṁ varaḥ.
11. atha droṇaḥ mahāiṣvāsaḥ daśabhiḥ śinipuṃgavam
avidhyat tvaritam kruddhaḥ sarvaśastrabṛtām varaḥ
11. atha droṇaḥ mahāiṣvāsaḥ sarvaśastrabṛtām varaḥ
kruddhaḥ daśabhiḥ tvaritam śinipuṃgavam avidhyat
11. Then Droṇa, the great archer and best of all weapon-wielders, enraged, quickly struck Śinipungava (Sātyaki) with ten arrows.
कर्णश्च दशभिर्बाणैः पुत्रश्च तव सप्तभिः ।
दशभिर्वृषसेनश्च सौबलश्चापि सप्तभिः ।
एते कौरव संक्रन्दे शैनेयं पर्यवारयन् ॥१२॥
12. karṇaśca daśabhirbāṇaiḥ putraśca tava saptabhiḥ ,
daśabhirvṛṣasenaśca saubalaścāpi saptabhiḥ ,
ete kaurava saṁkrande śaineyaṁ paryavārayan.
12. कर्णः च दशभिः बाणैः पुत्रः च तव सप्तभिः दशभिः वृषसेनः च
सौबलः च अपि सप्तभिः एते कौरव संक्रन्दे शैनेयं पर्यवारयन्
12. कौरव कर्णः च दशभिः बाणैः च तव पुत्रः सप्तभिः च वृषसेनः
दशभिः च सौबलः अपि सप्तभिः एते संक्रन्दे शैनेयं पर्यवारयन्
12. O scion of Kuru, Karṇa with ten arrows, and your son with seven, and Vṛṣasena with ten, and Saubala also with seven - these surrounded Śaineya in the fierce battle.
दृष्ट्वा च समरे द्रोणं निघ्नन्तं पाण्डवीं चमूम् ।
विव्यधुः सोमकास्तूर्णं समन्ताच्छरवृष्टिभिः ॥१३॥
13. dṛṣṭvā ca samare droṇaṁ nighnantaṁ pāṇḍavīṁ camūm ,
vivyadhuḥ somakāstūrṇaṁ samantāccharavṛṣṭibhiḥ.
13. दृष्ट्वा च समरे द्रोणं निघ्नन्तं पाण्डवीं चमूम्
विव्यधुः सोमकाः तूर्णं समन्तात् शरवृष्टिभिः
13. च समरे द्रोणं पाण्डवीं चमूम् निघ्नन्तं दृष्ट्वा
सोमकाः तूर्णं समन्तात् शरवृष्टिभिः विव्यधुः
13. And seeing Droṇa slaying the Pāṇḍava army in battle, the Somakas swiftly pierced him from all sides with volleys of arrows.
ततो द्रोणोऽहरत्प्राणान्क्षत्रियाणां विशां पते ।
रश्मिभिर्भास्करो राजंस्तमसामिव भारत ॥१४॥
14. tato droṇo'haratprāṇānkṣatriyāṇāṁ viśāṁ pate ,
raśmibhirbhāskaro rājaṁstamasāmiva bhārata.
14. ततः द्रोणः अहरत् प्राणान् क्षत्रियाणां विशां
पते रश्मिभिः भास्करः राजन् तमसाम् इव भारत
14. ततः विशां पते राजन् भारत द्रोणः क्षत्रियाणां
प्राणान् अहरत् भास्करः रश्मिभिः तमसाम् इव
14. Then, O lord of people, Droṇa took away the lives of the Kṣatriyas, just as the sun (bhāskara) dispels darkness with its rays, O king, O Bhārata.
द्रोणेन वध्यमानानां पाञ्चालानां विशां पते ।
शुश्रुवे तुमुलः शब्दः क्रोशतामितरेतरम् ॥१५॥
15. droṇena vadhyamānānāṁ pāñcālānāṁ viśāṁ pate ,
śuśruve tumulaḥ śabdaḥ krośatāmitaretaram.
15. द्रोणेन वध्यमानानां पाञ्चालानां विशां पते
शुश्रुवे तुमुलः शब्दः क्रोशताम् इतरेतरम्
15. विशां पते द्रोणेन वध्यमानानां पाञ्चालानां
इतरेतरम् क्रोशताम् तुमुलः शब्दः शुश्रुवे
15. O lord of people, a tumultuous sound was heard from the Pāñcālas, who were being slain by Droṇa, as they cried out to one another.
पुत्रानन्ये पितॄनन्ये भ्रातॄनन्ये च मातुलान् ।
भागिनेयान्वयस्यांश्च तथा संबन्धिबान्धवान् ।
उत्सृज्योत्सृज्य गच्छन्ति त्वरिता जीवितेप्सवः ॥१६॥
16. putrānanye pitṝnanye bhrātṝnanye ca mātulān ,
bhāgineyānvayasyāṁśca tathā saṁbandhibāndhavān ,
utsṛjyotsṛjya gacchanti tvaritā jīvitepsavaḥ.
16. putrān anye pitṝn anye bhrātṝn anye
ca mātulān bhāgineyān vayasyān ca
tathā sambandhibāndhavān utsṛjya
utsṛjya gacchanti tvaritāḥ jīvitepsavaḥ
16. jīvitepsavaḥ anye putrān anye pitṝn
anye bhrātṝn ca mātulān tathā
bhāgineyān vayasyān ca sambandhibāndhavān
utsṛjya utsṛjya tvaritāḥ gacchanti
16. Desiring to save their lives, some abandon their sons, others their fathers, still others their brothers, and also their maternal uncles, nephews, friends, and other relatives and kinsmen. They flee swiftly, repeatedly abandoning them.
अपरे मोहिता मोहात्तमेवाभिमुखा ययुः ।
पाण्डवानां रणे योधाः परलोकं तथापरे ॥१७॥
17. apare mohitā mohāttamevābhimukhā yayuḥ ,
pāṇḍavānāṁ raṇe yodhāḥ paralokaṁ tathāpare.
17. apare mohitāḥ mohāt tam eva abhimukhāḥ yayuḥ
pāṇḍavānām raṇe yodhāḥ paralokam tathā apare
17. apare mohāt mohitāḥ tam eva abhimukhāḥ yayuḥ.
tathā apare pāṇḍavānām yodhāḥ raṇe paralokam [yayuḥ]
17. Others, deluded by confusion, went directly towards the enemy. And similarly, other warriors of the Pāṇḍavas went to the other world (perished) in battle.
सा तथा पाण्डवी सेना वध्यमाना महात्मभिः ।
निशि संप्राद्रवद्राजन्नुत्सृज्योल्काः सहस्रशः ॥१८॥
18. sā tathā pāṇḍavī senā vadhyamānā mahātmabhiḥ ,
niśi saṁprādravadrājannutsṛjyolkāḥ sahasraśaḥ.
18. sā tathā pāṇḍavī senā vadhyamānā mahātmabhiḥ
niśi samprādravat rājan utsṛjya ulkāḥ sahasraśaḥ
18. rājan sā tathā mahātmabhiḥ vadhyamānā pāṇḍavī
senā niśi sahasraśaḥ ulkāḥ utsṛjya samprādravat
18. O King, that Pāṇḍava army, being slaughtered by great warriors, thus fled at night, abandoning thousands of torches.
पश्यतो भीमसेनस्य विजयस्याच्युतस्य च ।
यमयोर्धर्मपुत्रस्य पार्षतस्य च पश्यतः ॥१९॥
19. paśyato bhīmasenasya vijayasyācyutasya ca ,
yamayordharmaputrasya pārṣatasya ca paśyataḥ.
19. paśyataḥ bhīmasenasya vijayasya acyutasya ca
yamayoḥ dharmaputrasya pārṣatasya ca paśyataḥ
19. bhīmasenasya paśyataḥ ca vijayasya acyutasya ca paśyataḥ,
yamayoḥ dharmaputrasya ca pārṣatasya paśyataḥ
19. This happened while Bhīmasena was watching, and while Vijaya (Arjuna) and Acyuta (Kṛṣṇa) were watching, and while the two twins (Nakula and Sahadeva), the son of dharma (Yudhiṣṭhira), and Pārṣata (Dhṛṣṭadyumna) were also watching.
तमसा संवृते लोके न प्राज्ञायत किंचन ।
कौरवाणां प्रकाशेन दृश्यन्ते तु द्रुताः परे ॥२०॥
20. tamasā saṁvṛte loke na prājñāyata kiṁcana ,
kauravāṇāṁ prakāśena dṛśyante tu drutāḥ pare.
20. tamasā saṃvṛte loke na prājñāyata kiñcana
kauravāṇām prakāśena dṛśyante tu drutāḥ pare
20. loke tamasā saṃvṛte kiñcana na prājñāyata tu
kauravāṇām prakāśena drutāḥ pare dṛśyante
20. When the realm was covered in darkness, nothing at all could be discerned. But by the brilliance of the Kauravas, the others (their enemies) are indeed seen fleeing.
द्रवमाणं तु तत्सैन्यं द्रोणकर्णौ महारथौ ।
जघ्नतुः पृष्ठतो राजन्किरन्तौ सायकान्बहून् ॥२१॥
21. dravamāṇaṁ tu tatsainyaṁ droṇakarṇau mahārathau ,
jaghnatuḥ pṛṣṭhato rājankirantau sāyakānbahūn.
21. dravamāṇam tu tat sainyam droṇakarṇau mahārathau
jaghnatuḥ pṛṣṭhataḥ rājan kirantau sāyakān bahūn
21. rājan tu droṇakarṇau mahārathau tat dravamāṇam
sainyam pṛṣṭhataḥ bahūn sāyakān kirantau jaghnatuḥ
21. O King, the two great charioteers, Droṇa and Karṇa, struck that fleeing army from behind, showering many arrows.
पाञ्चालेषु प्रभग्नेषु दीर्यमाणेषु सर्वशः ।
जनार्दनो दीनमनाः प्रत्यभाषत फल्गुनम् ॥२२॥
22. pāñcāleṣu prabhagneṣu dīryamāṇeṣu sarvaśaḥ ,
janārdano dīnamanāḥ pratyabhāṣata phalgunam.
22. pāñcāleṣu prabhagneṣu dīryamāṇeṣu sarvaśaḥ
janārdanaḥ dīnamanāḥ pratyabhāṣata phalgunam
22. pāñcāleṣu prabhagneṣu sarvaśaḥ dīryamāṇeṣu

22. When the Pāñcālas were completely defeated and scattered in all directions, Janārdana (Kṛṣṇa), feeling distressed, spoke to Phālguna (Arjuna).
द्रोणकर्णौ महेष्वासावेतौ पार्षतसात्यकी ।
पाञ्चालांश्चैव सहितौ जघ्नतुः सायकैर्भृशम् ॥२३॥
23. droṇakarṇau maheṣvāsāvetau pārṣatasātyakī ,
pāñcālāṁścaiva sahitau jaghnatuḥ sāyakairbhṛśam.
23. droṇakarṇau mahāiṣvāsau etau pārṣatasaatyakī
pāñcālān ca eva sahitau jaghnatuḥ sāyakaiḥ bhṛśam
23. etau mahāiṣvāsau droṇakarṇau sahitau pārṣatasaatyakī
ca pāñcālān eva sāyakaiḥ bhṛśam jaghnatuḥ
23. These two great archers, Droṇa and Karṇa, together killed Pārṣata (Dhṛṣṭadyumna) and Sātyaki, and also the Pāñcālas, fiercely with arrows.
एतयोः शरवर्षेण प्रभग्ना नो महारथाः ।
वार्यमाणापि कौन्तेय पृतना नावतिष्ठते ॥२४॥
24. etayoḥ śaravarṣeṇa prabhagnā no mahārathāḥ ,
vāryamāṇāpi kaunteya pṛtanā nāvatiṣṭhate.
24. etayoḥ śaravarṣeṇa prabhagnāḥ naḥ mahārathāḥ
vāryamāṇā api kaunteya pṛtanā na avatiṣṭhate
24. kaunteya etayoḥ śaravarṣeṇa naḥ mahārathāḥ
prabhagnāḥ pṛtanā vāryamāṇā api na avatiṣṭhate
24. These two have shattered our great charioteers with their rain of arrows. O son of Kunti, even when being restrained, our army cannot hold its ground.
एतावावां सर्वसैन्यैर्व्यूढैः सम्यगुदायुधैः ।
द्रोणं च सूतपुत्रं च प्रयतावः प्रबाधितुम् ॥२५॥
25. etāvāvāṁ sarvasainyairvyūḍhaiḥ samyagudāyudhaiḥ ,
droṇaṁ ca sūtaputraṁ ca prayatāvaḥ prabādhitum.
25. etau āvām sarvasainyaiḥ vyūḍhaiḥ samyak udāyudhaiḥ
droṇam ca sūtaputram ca prayatāvaḥ prabādhitum
25. āvām sarvasainyaiḥ vyūḍhaiḥ samyak udāyudhaiḥ etau
droṇam ca sūtaputram ca prabādhitum prayatāvaḥ
25. With all armies arrayed and fully armed, we two will strive to obstruct both Droṇa and the son of Sūta.
एतौ हि बलिनौ शूरौ कृतास्त्रौ जितकाशिनौ ।
उपेक्षितौ बलं क्रुद्धौ नाशयेतां निशामिमाम् ।
एष भीमोऽभियात्युग्रः पुनरावर्त्य वाहिनीम् ॥२६॥
26. etau hi balinau śūrau kṛtāstrau jitakāśinau ,
upekṣitau balaṁ kruddhau nāśayetāṁ niśāmimām ,
eṣa bhīmo'bhiyātyugraḥ punarāvartya vāhinīm.
26. etau hi balinau śūrau kṛtāstrau
jitakāśinau upekṣitau balam kruddhau
nāśayetām niśām imām eṣaḥ bhīmaḥ
abhiyāti ugrah punaḥ āvartya vāhinīm

bhīmaḥ vāhinīm punaḥ āvartya abhiyāti
26. Indeed, these two, powerful, heroic, skilled in weaponry, and victorious, if neglected and enraged, could destroy our entire force (bala) this very night. Behold, this fierce Bhīma is advancing, having rallied the army (vāhinī) once more.
वृकोदरं तथायान्तं दृष्ट्वा तत्र जनार्दनः ।
पुनरेवाब्रवीद्राजन्हर्षयन्निव पाण्डवम् ॥२७॥
27. vṛkodaraṁ tathāyāntaṁ dṛṣṭvā tatra janārdanaḥ ,
punarevābravīdrājanharṣayanniva pāṇḍavam.
27. vṛkodaram tathā āyāntam dṛṣṭvā tatra janārdanaḥ
punaḥ eva abravīt rājan harṣayan iva pāṇḍavam
27. tatra vṛkodaram tathā āyāntam dṛṣṭvā janārdanaḥ

27. Upon seeing Vṛkodara (Bhīma) thus advancing there, Janārdana (Kṛṣṇa) then spoke again, O King, as if to gladden the Pāṇḍava (Arjuna).
एष भीमो रणश्लाघी वृतः सोमकपाण्डवैः ।
रुषितोऽभ्येति वेगेन द्रोणकर्णौ महाबलौ ॥२८॥
28. eṣa bhīmo raṇaślāghī vṛtaḥ somakapāṇḍavaiḥ ,
ruṣito'bhyeti vegena droṇakarṇau mahābalau.

28. This Bhīma, who is renowned in battle and accompanied by the Somakas and Pāṇḍavas, now approaches the mighty Droṇa and Karṇa with great speed, filled with rage.
एतेन सहितो युध्य पाञ्चालैश्च महारथैः ।
आश्वासनार्थं सर्वेषां सैन्यानां पाण्डुनन्दन ॥२९॥
29. etena sahito yudhya pāñcālaiśca mahārathaiḥ ,
āśvāsanārthaṁ sarveṣāṁ sainyānāṁ pāṇḍunandana.

29. O son of Pāṇḍu (Pāṇḍunandana), fight alongside this Bhīma, joined by the Pāñcālas and the great charioteers, for the assurance of all the troops.
ततस्तौ पुरुषव्याघ्रावुभौ माधवपाण्डवौ ।
द्रोणकर्णौ समासाद्य धिष्ठितौ रणमूर्धनि ॥३०॥
30. tatastau puruṣavyāghrāvubhau mādhavapāṇḍavau ,
droṇakarṇau samāsādya dhiṣṭhitau raṇamūrdhani.

30. Then, those two tiger-like men (puruṣavyāghra), both Mādhava (Krishna) and the Pāṇḍava (Arjuna), having approached Droṇa and Karṇa, took up their positions at the forefront of the battle.
ततस्तत्पुनरावृत्तं युधिष्ठिरबलं महत् ।
ततो द्रोणश्च कर्णश्च परान्ममृदतुर्युधि ॥३१॥
31. tatastatpunarāvṛttaṁ yudhiṣṭhirabalaṁ mahat ,
tato droṇaśca karṇaśca parānmamṛdaturyudhi.
31. tataḥ tat punar āvṛttam yudhiṣṭhirabalam mahat
tataḥ droṇaḥ ca karṇaḥ ca parān mamṛdatuḥ yudhi

31. Then, that mighty army of Yudhiṣṭhira returned to the fray. Thereafter, Droṇa and Karṇa crushed their enemies (parān) in battle (yudhi).
स संप्रहारस्तुमुलो निशि प्रत्यभवन्महान् ।
यथा सागरयो राजंश्चन्द्रोदयविवृद्धयोः ॥३२॥
32. sa saṁprahārastumulo niśi pratyabhavanmahān ,
yathā sāgarayo rājaṁścandrodayavivṛddhayoḥ.
32. sa saṃprahāraḥ tumulaḥ niśi pratyabhavat mahān
yathā sāgarayoḥ rājan ca candrodaya-vivṛddhayoḥ
32. rājan niśi saḥ tumulaḥ mahān saṃprahāraḥ pratyabhavat

32. O King, that tumultuous and great battle took place at night, just like two oceans swelling due to the moonrise.
तत उत्सृज्य पाणिभ्यः प्रदीपांस्तव वाहिनी ।
युयुधे पाण्डवैः सार्धमुन्मत्तवदहःक्षये ॥३३॥
33. tata utsṛjya pāṇibhyaḥ pradīpāṁstava vāhinī ,
yuyudhe pāṇḍavaiḥ sārdhamunmattavadahaḥkṣaye.
33. tataḥ utsṛjya pāṇibhyaḥ pradīpān tava vāhinī
yuyudhe pāṇḍavaiḥ sārdham unmattavat ahaḥ-kṣaye
33. tataḥ tava vāhinī pāṇibhyaḥ pradīpān utsṛjya
ahaḥ-kṣaye pāṇḍavaiḥ sārdham unmattavat yuyudhe
33. Then your army, abandoning the lamps from their hands, fought with the Pāṇḍavas like madmen at the end of the day.
रजसा तमसा चैव संवृते भृशदारुणे ।
केवलं नामगोत्रेण प्रायुध्यन्त जयैषिणः ॥३४॥
34. rajasā tamasā caiva saṁvṛte bhṛśadāruṇe ,
kevalaṁ nāmagotreṇa prāyudhyanta jayaiṣiṇaḥ.
34. rajasā tamasā ca eva saṃvṛte bhṛśa-dāruṇe
kevalam nāma-gotreṇa prāyudhyanta jaya-eṣiṇaḥ
34. rajasā tamasā ca eva bhṛśa-dāruṇe saṃvṛte

34. Enveloped by dust and darkness, in that exceedingly dreadful situation, those desirous of victory fought merely by calling out names and clans.
अश्रूयन्त हि नामानि श्राव्यमाणानि पार्थिवैः ।
प्रहरद्भिर्महाराज स्वयंवर इवाहवे ॥३५॥
35. aśrūyanta hi nāmāni śrāvyamāṇāni pārthivaiḥ ,
praharadbhirmahārāja svayaṁvara ivāhave.

35. Indeed, O great King, names were heard, being proclaimed by the kings who were striking, as if in a bride's choice ceremony, even amidst the battle.
निःशब्दमासीत्सहसा पुनः शब्दो महानभूत् ।
क्रुद्धानां युध्यमानानां जयतां जीयतामपि ॥३६॥
36. niḥśabdamāsītsahasā punaḥ śabdo mahānabhūt ,
kruddhānāṁ yudhyamānānāṁ jayatāṁ jīyatāmapi.
36. niḥśabdam āsīt sahasā punaḥ śabdaḥ mahān abhūt
kruddhānām yudhyamānānām jayatām jīyatām api
36. sahasā niḥśabdam āsīt punaḥ mahān śabdaḥ abhūt
kruddhānām yudhyamānānām jayatām api jīyatām
36. Suddenly, there was silence, but then a great noise arose once more. This was the noise of the enraged warriors who were fighting, both those who were conquering and those who were being conquered.
यत्र यत्र स्म दृश्यन्ते प्रदीपाः कुरुसत्तम ।
तत्र तत्र स्म ते शूरा निपतन्ति पतंगवत् ॥३७॥
37. yatra yatra sma dṛśyante pradīpāḥ kurusattama ,
tatra tatra sma te śūrā nipatanti pataṁgavat.

37. O best among the Kurus, wherever lamps were seen, there those brave warriors fell down like moths.
तथा संयुध्यमानानां विगाढाभून्महानिशा ।
पाण्डवानां च राजेन्द्र कौरवाणां च सर्वशः ॥३८॥
38. tathā saṁyudhyamānānāṁ vigāḍhābhūnmahāniśā ,
pāṇḍavānāṁ ca rājendra kauravāṇāṁ ca sarvaśaḥ.
38. tathā saṃyudhyamānānām vigāḍhā abhūt mahāniśā
pāṇḍavānām ca rājendra kauravāṇām ca sarvaśaḥ

38. O King, as the Pandavas and the Kauravas continued fighting, a deep night profoundly settled upon them all.
