लोमश उवाच ।
कस्यचित्त्वथ कालस्य सुराणामश्विनौ नृप ।
कृताभिषेकां विवृतां सुकन्यां तामपश्यताम् ॥१॥
1. lomaśa uvāca ,
kasyacittvatha kālasya surāṇāmaśvinau nṛpa ,
kṛtābhiṣekāṁ vivṛtāṁ sukanyāṁ tāmapaśyatām.
1. lomaśaḥ uvāca kasyacit tu atha kālasya surāṇām aśvinau
nṛpa kṛtābhiṣekām vivṛtām sukanyām tām apaśyatām
1. Lomasha said: O king, after some time, the two Ashvins (devas) saw that Sukanya, who had completed her ritual bathing and was unveiled.
तां दृष्ट्वा दर्शनीयाङ्गीं देवराजसुतामिव ।
ऊचतुः समभिद्रुत्य नासत्यावश्विनाविदम् ॥२॥
2. tāṁ dṛṣṭvā darśanīyāṅgīṁ devarājasutāmiva ,
ūcatuḥ samabhidrutya nāsatyāvaśvināvidam.
2. tām dṛṣṭvā darśanīyāṅgīm devarājasutām iva
ūcatuḥ samabhidrutya nāsatyau aśvinau idam
2. Having seen her, beautiful in form like the daughter of the king of the gods, the two Ashvins (Nasatyas) approached her quickly and said this.
कस्य त्वमसि वामोरु किं वने वै करोषि च ।
इच्छाव भद्रे ज्ञातुं त्वां तत्त्वमाख्याहि शोभने ॥३॥
3. kasya tvamasi vāmoru kiṁ vane vai karoṣi ca ,
icchāva bhadre jñātuṁ tvāṁ tattvamākhyāhi śobhane.
3. kasya tvam asi vāmoru kim vane vai karoṣi ca
icchāva bhadre jñātum tvām tattvam ākhyāhi śobhane
3. "O beautiful-thighed one, whose are you? And what indeed are you doing in this forest? O good lady, we both desire to know you; please tell us the truth, O beautiful one."
ततः सुकन्या संवीता तावुवाच सुरोत्तमौ ।
शर्यातितनयां वित्तं भार्यां च च्यवनस्य माम् ॥४॥
4. tataḥ sukanyā saṁvītā tāvuvāca surottamau ,
śaryātitanayāṁ vittaṁ bhāryāṁ ca cyavanasya mām.
4. tataḥ sukanyā saṃvītā tau uvāca surottamau
śaryātitanayām vittam bhāryām ca cyavanasya mām
4. Then Sukanyā, adorned, spoke to those two best of the gods: "Know me to be Śaryāti's daughter and Cyavana's wife."
अथाश्विनौ प्रहस्यैतामब्रूतां पुनरेव तु ।
कथं त्वमसि कल्याणि पित्रा दत्ता गताध्वने ॥५॥
5. athāśvinau prahasyaitāmabrūtāṁ punareva tu ,
kathaṁ tvamasi kalyāṇi pitrā dattā gatādhvane.
5. atha aśvinau prahasya etām abrūtām punar eva tu
katham tvam asi kalyāṇi pitrā dattā gatādhvane
5. Then the two Aśvins, laughing, spoke to her again: "O beautiful one, how is it that you, given by your father, are with an old man (gatādhvan)?"
भ्राजसे वनमध्ये त्वं विद्युत्सौदामिनी यथा ।
न देवेष्वपि तुल्यां हि त्वया पश्याव भामिनि ॥६॥
6. bhrājase vanamadhye tvaṁ vidyutsaudāminī yathā ,
na deveṣvapi tulyāṁ hi tvayā paśyāva bhāmini.
6. bhrājase vanamadhye tvam vidyut saudāminī yathā
na deveṣu api tulyām hi tvayā paśyāva bhāmini
6. In the forest, you shine like a flash of lightning (saudāminī). O beautiful woman (bhāminī), we surely do not see anyone among the gods who is equal to you.
सर्वाभरणसंपन्ना परमाम्बरधारिणी ।
शोभेथास्त्वनवद्याङ्गि न त्वेवं मलपङ्किनी ॥७॥
7. sarvābharaṇasaṁpannā paramāmbaradhāriṇī ,
śobhethāstvanavadyāṅgi na tvevaṁ malapaṅkinī.
7. sarvābharaṇasaṃpannā paramāmbaradhāriṇī
śobhethāḥ tvam anavadyāṅgi na tu evam malapaṅkinī
7. You, O lady of flawless limbs (anavadyāṅgī), would shine (śobhethāḥ) if you were adorned with all ornaments and wearing excellent garments, but not when you are covered in dirt.
कस्मादेवंविधा भूत्वा जराजर्जरितं पतिम् ।
त्वमुपास्से ह कल्याणि कामभोगबहिष्कृतम् ॥८॥
8. kasmādevaṁvidhā bhūtvā jarājarjaritaṁ patim ,
tvamupāsse ha kalyāṇi kāmabhogabahiṣkṛtam.
8. kasmāt evaṃvidhā bhūtvā jarājarjaritam patim
tvam upāsse ha kalyāṇi kāmabhogabahiṣkṛtam
8. O beautiful one, why do you, being so [youthful and radiant], indeed serve a husband who is utterly debilitated by old age and deprived of all sensual enjoyments?
असमर्थं परित्राणे पोषणे च शुचिस्मिते ।
साधु च्यवनमुत्सृज्य वरयस्वैकमावयोः ।
पत्यर्थं देवगर्भाभे मा वृथा यौवनं कृथाः ॥९॥
9. asamarthaṁ paritrāṇe poṣaṇe ca śucismite ,
sādhu cyavanamutsṛjya varayasvaikamāvayoḥ ,
patyarthaṁ devagarbhābhe mā vṛthā yauvanaṁ kṛthāḥ.
9. asamartham paritrāṇe poṣaṇe ca
śucismite sādhu cyavanam utsṛjya
varayasva ekam āvayoḥ patyartham
devagarbhābhe mā vṛthā yauvanam kṛthāḥ
9. O lady with a pure smile, he is incapable of providing protection or sustenance. Therefore, O goddess-like one, it is proper that you abandon Chyavana and choose one of us two as your husband. Do not waste your youth (yauvanam) in vain.
एवमुक्ता सुकन्या तु सुरौ ताविदमब्रवीत् ।
रताहं च्यवने पत्यौ मैवं मा पर्यशङ्किथाः ॥१०॥
10. evamuktā sukanyā tu surau tāvidamabravīt ,
ratāhaṁ cyavane patyau maivaṁ mā paryaśaṅkithāḥ.
10. evam uktā sukanyā tu surau tau idam abravīt ratā
aham cyavane patyau mā evam mā paryaśaṅkithāḥ
10. But Sukanya, thus addressed, said this to those two gods: 'I am devoted to Chyavana, my husband. Do not say such a thing, and do not doubt [my fidelity]!'
तावब्रूतां पुनस्त्वेनामावां देवभिषग्वरौ ।
युवानं रूपसंपन्नं करिष्यावः पतिं तव ॥११॥
11. tāvabrūtāṁ punastvenāmāvāṁ devabhiṣagvarau ,
yuvānaṁ rūpasaṁpannaṁ kariṣyāvaḥ patiṁ tava.
11. tau abrūtām punaḥ tu enām āvām devabhiṣagvarau
yuvānam rūpasaṃpannam kariṣyāvaḥ patim tava
11. Then those two, we, the excellent divine physicians, said to her again: 'We will make your husband young and endowed with beauty.'
ततस्तस्यावयोश्चैव पतिमेकतमं वृणु ।
एतेन समयेनैनमामन्त्रय वरानने ॥१२॥
12. tatastasyāvayoścaiva patimekatamaṁ vṛṇu ,
etena samayenainamāmantraya varānane.
12. tataḥ tasyāḥ āvayoḥ ca eva patim ekatamam
vṛṇu | etena samayena enam āmantraya varānanē
12. Then, O beautiful-faced one, choose one husband from among him (your husband) and us two. In accordance with this agreement, invite him.
सा तयोर्वचनाद्राजन्नुपसंगम्य भार्गवम् ।
उवाच वाक्यं यत्ताभ्यामुक्तं भृगुसुतं प्रति ॥१३॥
13. sā tayorvacanādrājannupasaṁgamya bhārgavam ,
uvāca vākyaṁ yattābhyāmuktaṁ bhṛgusutaṁ prati.
13. sā tayoḥ vacanāt rājan upasaṅgamya bhārgavam
uvāca vākyam yat tābhyām uktam bhṛgusutam prati
13. O King, after hearing the words of the two (Aśvins), she (Sukanyā) approached Bhārgava (Chyavana) and repeated the very words that they had spoken concerning Bhṛgu's son (Chyavana).
तच्छ्रुत्वा च्यवनो भार्यामुवाच क्रियतामिति ।
भर्त्रा सा समनुज्ञाता क्रियतामित्यथाब्रवीत् ॥१४॥
14. tacchrutvā cyavano bhāryāmuvāca kriyatāmiti ,
bhartrā sā samanujñātā kriyatāmityathābravīt.
14. tat śrutvā cyavanaḥ bhāryām uvāca kriyatām iti |
bhartrā sā samanuñātā kriyatām iti atha abravīt
14. Having heard that, Chyavana said to his wife, 'Let it be done thus.' Permitted by her husband, she (Sukanyā) then said, 'Let it be done thus.'
श्रुत्वा तदश्विनौ वाक्यं तत्तस्याः क्रियतामिति ।
ऊचतू राजपुत्रीं तां पतिस्तव विशत्वपः ॥१५॥
15. śrutvā tadaśvinau vākyaṁ tattasyāḥ kriyatāmiti ,
ūcatū rājaputrīṁ tāṁ patistava viśatvapaḥ.
15. śrutvā tat aśvinau vākyam tat tasyāḥ kriyatām iti
| ūcatuḥ rājaputrīm tām patiḥ tava viśatu apaḥ
15. Having heard that statement of hers, 'Let it be done,' the two Aśvins said to that princess (Sukanyā), 'Let your husband enter the waters.'
ततोऽम्भश्च्यवनः शीघ्रं रूपार्थी प्रविवेश ह ।
अश्विनावपि तद्राजन्सरः प्रविशतां प्रभो ॥१६॥
16. tato'mbhaścyavanaḥ śīghraṁ rūpārthī praviveśa ha ,
aśvināvapi tadrājansaraḥ praviśatāṁ prabho.
16. tataḥ ambhaḥ cyavanaḥ śīghraṃ rūpārthī praviveśa
ha aśvinau api tat rājan saraḥ praviśatām prabho
16. Then, Cyavana, desiring a new form, quickly entered the water. O King, O Lord, let the two Aśvins also enter that lake.
ततो मुहूर्तादुत्तीर्णाः सर्वे ते सरसस्ततः ।
दिव्यरूपधराः सर्वे युवानो मृष्टकुण्डलाः ।
तुल्यरूपधराश्चैव मनसः प्रीतिवर्धनाः ॥१७॥
17. tato muhūrtāduttīrṇāḥ sarve te sarasastataḥ ,
divyarūpadharāḥ sarve yuvāno mṛṣṭakuṇḍalāḥ ,
tulyarūpadharāścaiva manasaḥ prītivardhanāḥ.
17. tataḥ muhūrtāt uttīrṇāḥ sarve te
sarasaḥ tataḥ divyarūpadharāḥ sarve
yuvānaḥ mṛṣṭakuṇḍalāḥ tulyarūpadharāḥ
ca eva manasaḥ prītivardhanāḥ
17. Then, after a moment, all of them emerged from the lake: all youthful, adorned with divine forms, wearing polished earrings, and possessing equally beautiful forms, enhancing the mind's delight.
तेऽब्रुवन्सहिताः सर्वे वृणीष्वान्यतमं शुभे ।
अस्माकमीप्सितं भद्रे पतित्वे वरवर्णिनि ।
यत्र वाप्यभिकामासि तं वृणीष्व सुशोभने ॥१८॥
18. te'bruvansahitāḥ sarve vṛṇīṣvānyatamaṁ śubhe ,
asmākamīpsitaṁ bhadre patitve varavarṇini ,
yatra vāpyabhikāmāsi taṁ vṛṇīṣva suśobhane.
18. te abruvan sahitāḥ sarve vṛṇīṣva
anyatamam śubhe asmākam īpsitam bhadre
patitve varavarṇini yatra vā
api abhikāmā asi tam vṛṇīṣva suśobhane
18. All of them, united, then said: 'O auspicious one, choose one of us whom you desire as a husband. O gentle lady, O beautiful woman, where you truly have a longing, choose him, O most lovely one.'
सा समीक्ष्य तु तान्सर्वांस्तुल्यरूपधरान्स्थितान् ।
निश्चित्य मनसा बुद्ध्या देवी वव्रे स्वकं पतिम् ॥१९॥
19. sā samīkṣya tu tānsarvāṁstulyarūpadharānsthitān ,
niścitya manasā buddhyā devī vavre svakaṁ patim.
19. sā samīkṣya tu tān sarvān tulyarūpadharān sthitān
niścitya manasā buddhyā devī vavre svakam patim
19. She, the goddess, having carefully observed all of them, standing with equally beautiful forms, and having decided with her mind and intellect, chose her own husband.
लब्ध्वा तु च्यवनो भार्यां वयोरूपं च वाञ्छितम् ।
हृष्टोऽब्रवीन्महातेजास्तौ नासत्याविदं वचः ॥२०॥
20. labdhvā tu cyavano bhāryāṁ vayorūpaṁ ca vāñchitam ,
hṛṣṭo'bravīnmahātejāstau nāsatyāvidaṁ vacaḥ.
20. labdhvā tu cyavanaḥ bhāryām vayo-rūpam ca vāñchitam
| hṛṣṭaḥ abravīt mahā-tejāḥ tau nāsatāu idam vacaḥ
20. Delighted, the greatly effulgent Chyavana, having obtained a wife and his desired youth and appearance, spoke these words to the two Ashvins.
यथाहं रूपसंपन्नो वयसा च समन्वितः ।
कृतो भवद्भ्यां वृद्धः सन्भार्यां च प्राप्तवानिमाम् ॥२१॥
21. yathāhaṁ rūpasaṁpanno vayasā ca samanvitaḥ ,
kṛto bhavadbhyāṁ vṛddhaḥ sanbhāryāṁ ca prāptavānimām.
21. yathā aham rūpa-saṃpannaḥ vayasā ca samanvitaḥ | kṛtaḥ
bhavadbhyām vṛddhaḥ san bhāryām ca prāptavān imām
21. Since I, though old, have been made endowed with beauty and youth by you two, and have obtained this wife -
तस्माद्युवां करिष्यामि प्रीत्याहं सोमपीथिनौ ।
मिषतो देवराजस्य सत्यमेतद्ब्रवीमि वाम् ॥२२॥
22. tasmādyuvāṁ kariṣyāmi prītyāhaṁ somapīthinau ,
miṣato devarājasya satyametadbravīmi vām.
22. tasmāt yuvām kariṣyāmi prītyā aham soma-pīthināu
| miṣataḥ deva-rājasya satyam etat bravīmi vām
22. Therefore, I, out of affection, will make you two Soma-drinkers, even in the presence of the king of gods (Indra). I speak this truth to you two.
तच्छ्रुत्वा हृष्टमनसौ दिवं तौ प्रतिजग्मतुः ।
च्यवनोऽपि सुकन्या च सुराविव विजह्रतुः ॥२३॥
23. tacchrutvā hṛṣṭamanasau divaṁ tau pratijagmatuḥ ,
cyavano'pi sukanyā ca surāviva vijahratuḥ.
23. tat śrutvā hṛṣṭa-manasāu divam tau pratijagmataḥ
| cyavanaḥ api sukanyā ca surāu iva vijahratuḥ
23. Having heard that, the two Ashvins, with joyful minds, returned to heaven. Chyavana and Sukanyā also lived happily, like two gods.
