व्यास उवाच ।
अत्राप्युदाहरन्तीममितिहासं पुरातनम् ।
बृहस्पतेश्च संवादं मरुत्तस्य च भारत ॥१॥
1. vyāsa uvāca ,
atrāpyudāharantīmamitihāsaṁ purātanam ,
bṛhaspateśca saṁvādaṁ maruttasya ca bhārata.

1. Vyāsa said: In this regard, they also narrate this ancient historical account (itihāsa): the dialogue between Bṛhaspati and Marutta, O Bhārata.
देवराजस्य समयं कृतमाङ्गिरसेन ह ।
श्रुत्वा मरुत्तो नृपतिर्मन्युमाहारयत्तदा ॥२॥
2. devarājasya samayaṁ kṛtamāṅgirasena ha ,
śrutvā marutto nṛpatirmanyumāhārayattadā.
2. devarājasya samayam kṛtam āṅgirasena ha
śrutvā maruttaḥ nṛpatiḥ manyum āhārayat tadā

2. Indeed, upon hearing that the agreement of the king of gods had been made by Angirasa (Bṛhaspati), King Marutta then became angry.
संकल्प्य मनसा यज्ञं करंधमसुतात्मजः ।
बृहस्पतिमुपागम्य वाग्मी वचनमब्रवीत् ॥३॥
3. saṁkalpya manasā yajñaṁ karaṁdhamasutātmajaḥ ,
bṛhaspatimupāgamya vāgmī vacanamabravīt.
3. saṅkalpya manasā yajñam karaṃdhamasutātmajaḥ
bṛhaspatim upāgamya vāgmī vacanam abravīt

3. Having resolved in his mind to perform a (Vedic ritual) (yajña), the eloquent son of Karandhama's daughter approached Bṛhaspati and spoke these words.
भगवन्यन्मया पूर्वमभिगम्य तपोधन ।
कृतोऽभिसंधिर्यज्ञाय भवतो वचनाद्गुरो ॥४॥
4. bhagavanyanmayā pūrvamabhigamya tapodhana ,
kṛto'bhisaṁdhiryajñāya bhavato vacanādguro.
4. bhagavan yat mayā pūrvam abhigamya tapodhana
kṛtaḥ abhisaṃdhiḥ yajñāya bhavataḥ vacanāt guro
4. bhagavan tapodhana guro yat abhisaṃdhiḥ mayā
pūrvam abhigamya bhavataḥ vacanāt yajñāya kṛtaḥ
4. O revered (bhagavan) ascetic (tapodhana) teacher (guru), that resolution (abhisaṃdhi) for a (Vedic ritual) (yajña) which I made previously, after having approached you and on your advice.
तमहं यष्टुमिच्छामि संभाराः संभृताश्च मे ।
याज्योऽस्मि भवतः साधो तत्प्राप्नुहि विधत्स्व च ॥५॥
5. tamahaṁ yaṣṭumicchāmi saṁbhārāḥ saṁbhṛtāśca me ,
yājyo'smi bhavataḥ sādho tatprāpnuhi vidhatsva ca.
5. tam aham yaṣṭum icchāmi saṃbhārāḥ saṃbhṛtāḥ ca me
yājyaḥ asmi bhavataḥ sādho tat prāpnuhi vidhatsva ca
5. aham tam yaṣṭum icchāmi me saṃbhārāḥ ca saṃbhṛtāḥ sādho
aham bhavataḥ yājyaḥ asmi tat prāpnuhi ca vidhatsva
5. I wish to perform that (Vedic ritual) (yajña), and my provisions have been collected. O virtuous one (sādhu), I am fit to be officiated by you. Therefore, accept (my offer) and carry it out.
बृहस्पतिरुवाच ।
न कामये याजयितुं त्वामहं पृथिवीपते ।
वृतोऽस्मि देवराजेन प्रतिज्ञातं च तस्य मे ॥६॥
6. bṛhaspatiruvāca ,
na kāmaye yājayituṁ tvāmahaṁ pṛthivīpate ,
vṛto'smi devarājena pratijñātaṁ ca tasya me.
6. bṛhaspatiḥ uvāca | na kāmaye yājayitum tvām aham
pṛthivīpate | vṛtaḥ asmi devarājena pratijñātam ca tasya me
6. bṛhaspatiḥ uvāca pṛthivīpate,
aham tvām yājayitum na kāmaye devarājena vṛtaḥ asmi,
ca tasya me pratijñātam.
6. Bṛhaspati said: 'O ruler of the earth, I do not desire to officiate your Vedic ritual (yajña). I have been chosen by the king of the gods, and I have made a promise to him.'
मरुत्त उवाच ।
पित्र्यमस्मि तव क्षेत्रं बहु मन्ये च ते भृशम् ।
न चास्म्ययाज्यतां प्राप्तो भजमानं भजस्व माम् ॥७॥
7. marutta uvāca ,
pitryamasmi tava kṣetraṁ bahu manye ca te bhṛśam ,
na cāsmyayājyatāṁ prāpto bhajamānaṁ bhajasva mām.
7. maruttaḥ uvāca | pitryam asmi
tava kṣetram bahu manye ca te
bhṛśam | na ca asmi ayājyatām
prāptaḥ bhajamānam bhajasva mām
7. maruttaḥ uvāca aham tava pitryam kṣetram asmi,
ca te bahu bhṛśam manye.
ca na asmi ayājyatām prāptaḥ.
mām bhajamānam bhajasva.
7. Marutta said: 'I am your family's hereditary patron (kṣetra), and I hold you in high regard. I have not become unworthy of having a Vedic ritual (yajña) performed for me. Therefore, serve me, your devoted follower.'
बृहस्पतिरुवाच ।
अमर्त्यं याजयित्वाहं याजयिष्ये न मानुषम् ।
मरुत्त गच्छ वा मा वा निवृत्तोऽस्म्यद्य याजनात् ॥८॥
8. bṛhaspatiruvāca ,
amartyaṁ yājayitvāhaṁ yājayiṣye na mānuṣam ,
marutta gaccha vā mā vā nivṛtto'smyadya yājanāt.
8. bṛhaspatiḥ uvāca | amartyam yājayitvā aham yājayişye na
mānuṣam | marutta gaccha vā mā vā nivṛttaḥ asmi adya yājanāt
8. bṛhaspatiḥ uvāca aham amartyam yājayitvā,
mānuṣam na yājayişye marutta,
gaccha vā mā vā; adya yājanāt nivṛttaḥ asmi.
8. Bṛhaspati said: 'After officiating for an immortal, I will not officiate for a mortal. O Marutta, go or stay; I have now withdrawn from officiating Vedic rituals.'
न त्वां याजयितास्म्यद्य वृणु त्वं यमिहेच्छसि ।
उपाध्यायं महाबाहो यस्ते यज्ञं करिष्यति ॥९॥
9. na tvāṁ yājayitāsmyadya vṛṇu tvaṁ yamihecchasi ,
upādhyāyaṁ mahābāho yaste yajñaṁ kariṣyati.
9. na tvām yājayitā asmi adya vṛṇu tvam yam iha icchasi
| upādhyāyam mahābāho yaḥ te yajñam karişyati
9. adya aham tvām yājayitā na asmi.
mahābāho,
tvam iha yam upādhyāyam icchasi tam vṛṇu; yaḥ te yajñam karişyati.
9. I will not officiate for you today. O mighty-armed one, you choose here the preceptor (upādhyāya) whom you desire, one who will perform the Vedic ritual (yajña) for you.
व्यास उवाच ।
एवमुक्तस्तु नृपतिर्मरुत्तो व्रीडितोऽभवत् ।
प्रत्यागच्छच्च संविग्नो ददर्श पथि नारदम् ॥१०॥
10. vyāsa uvāca ,
evamuktastu nṛpatirmarutto vrīḍito'bhavat ,
pratyāgacchacca saṁvigno dadarśa pathi nāradam.
10. vyāsa uvāca evam uktaḥ tu nṛpatiḥ maruttaḥ vrīḍitaḥ
abhavat pratyāgacchat ca saṃvignaḥ dadarśa pathi nāradam
10. vyāsa uvāca evam uktaḥ tu nṛpatiḥ maruttaḥ vrīḍitaḥ
abhavat saṃvignaḥ ca pratyāgacchat pathi nāradam dadarśa
10. Vyasa said: After being addressed in this manner, King Marutta became embarrassed. Distressed, he returned and on the path, he saw Narada.
देवर्षिणा समागम्य नारदेन स पार्थिवः ।
विधिवत्प्राञ्जलिस्तस्थावथैनं नारदोऽब्रवीत् ॥११॥
11. devarṣiṇā samāgamya nāradena sa pārthivaḥ ,
vidhivatprāñjalistasthāvathainaṁ nārado'bravīt.
11. devarṣiṇā samāgamya nāradena sa pārthivaḥ vidhivat
prāñjaliḥ tasthau atha enam nāradaḥ abravīt
11. nāradena devarṣiṇā samāgamya sa pārthivaḥ vidhivat
prāñjaliḥ tasthau atha nāradaḥ enam abravīt
11. Having met the divine sage Narada, that king stood with folded hands, as prescribed. Then Narada spoke to him.
राजर्षे नातिहृष्टोऽसि कच्चित्क्षेमं तवानघ ।
क्व गतोऽसि कुतो वेदमप्रीतिस्थानमागतम् ॥१२॥
12. rājarṣe nātihṛṣṭo'si kaccitkṣemaṁ tavānagha ,
kva gato'si kuto vedamaprītisthānamāgatam.
12. rājarṣe na ati hṛṣṭaḥ asi kaccit kṣemam tava anagha
kva gataḥ asi kutaḥ vā idam aprītisthānam āgatam
12. rājarṣe anagha,
tvam ati hṛṣṭaḥ na asi tava kṣemam kaccit? kva gataḥ asi vā kutaḥ idam aprītisthānam āgatam?
12. O royal sage, you do not seem very joyful. O sinless one, I hope you are well. Where have you been, or from where has this cause for unhappiness come?
श्रोतव्यं चेन्मया राजन्ब्रूहि मे पार्थिवर्षभ ।
व्यपनेष्यामि ते मन्युं सर्वयत्नैर्नराधिप ॥१३॥
13. śrotavyaṁ cenmayā rājanbrūhi me pārthivarṣabha ,
vyapaneṣyāmi te manyuṁ sarvayatnairnarādhipa.
13. śrotavyam cet mayā rājan brūhi me pārthivarṣabha
vyapaneṣyāmi te manyum sarvayātnaiḥ narādhipa
13. rājan pārthivarṣabha,
cet mayā śrotavyam,
me brūhi narādhipa,
aham te manyum sarvayātnaiḥ vyapaneṣyāmi
13. O King, best among rulers, if it ought to be heard by me, please tell it to me. O lord of men, I shall remove your sorrow (manyu) with all my efforts.
एवमुक्तो मरुत्तस्तु नारदेन महर्षिणा ।
विप्रलम्भमुपाध्यायात्सर्वमेव न्यवेदयत् ॥१४॥
14. evamukto maruttastu nāradena maharṣiṇā ,
vipralambhamupādhyāyātsarvameva nyavedayat.
14. evam uktaḥ maruttaḥ tu nāradena maharṣiṇā
vipralambham upādhyāyāt sarvam eva nyavedayat
14. nāradena maharṣiṇā evam uktaḥ maruttaḥ tu
upādhyāyāt vipralambham sarvam eva nyavedayat
14. Thus addressed by the great sage (maharṣi) Nārada, Marutta reported everything concerning the rejection he experienced from his preceptor.
गतोऽस्म्यङ्गिरसः पुत्रं देवाचार्यं बृहस्पतिम् ।
यज्ञार्थमृत्विजं द्रष्टुं स च मां नाभ्यनन्दत ॥१५॥
15. gato'smyaṅgirasaḥ putraṁ devācāryaṁ bṛhaspatim ,
yajñārthamṛtvijaṁ draṣṭuṁ sa ca māṁ nābhyanandata.
15. gataḥ asmi aṅgirasaḥ putram devācāryam bṛhaspatim
yajñārtham ṛtvijam draṣṭum sa ca mām na abhyanandata
15. gataḥ asmi aṅgirasaḥ putram devācāryam bṛhaspatim
ṛtvijam yajñārtham draṣṭum sa ca mām na abhyanandata
15. I went to Bṛhaspati, the son of Aṅgiras and preceptor of the gods, to seek him as a priest for a Vedic ritual (yajña), but he did not welcome me.
प्रत्याख्यातश्च तेनाहं जीवितुं नाद्य कामये ।
परित्यक्तश्च गुरुणा दूषितश्चास्मि नारद ॥१६॥
16. pratyākhyātaśca tenāhaṁ jīvituṁ nādya kāmaye ,
parityaktaśca guruṇā dūṣitaścāsmi nārada.
16. pratyākhyātaḥ ca tena aham jīvitum na adya kāmaye
parityaktaḥ ca guruṇā dūṣitaḥ ca asmi nārada
16. tena pratyākhyātaḥ ca aham adya na jīvitum kāmaye
nārada guruṇā parityaktaḥ ca dūṣitaḥ ca asmi
16. Rejected by him, I no longer wish to live. O Nārada, I have been abandoned by my preceptor and thus disgraced.
एवमुक्तस्तु राज्ञा स नारदः प्रत्युवाच ह ।
आविक्षितं महाराज वाचा संजीवयन्निव ॥१७॥
17. evamuktastu rājñā sa nāradaḥ pratyuvāca ha ,
āvikṣitaṁ mahārāja vācā saṁjīvayanniva.
17. evam uktaḥ tu rājñā sa nāradaḥ pratyuvāca
ha āvikṣitam mahārāja vācā sañjīvayan iva
17. rājñā evam uktaḥ tu sa nāradaḥ āvikṣitam
mahārāja vācā sañjīvayan iva ha pratyuvāca
17. Thus addressed by the king, Nārada replied to Āvikṣita, O great king, as if reviving him with his words.
राजन्नङ्गिरसः पुत्रः संवर्तो नाम धार्मिकः ।
चङ्क्रमीति दिशः सर्वा दिग्वासा मोहयन्प्रजाः ॥१८॥
18. rājannaṅgirasaḥ putraḥ saṁvarto nāma dhārmikaḥ ,
caṅkramīti diśaḥ sarvā digvāsā mohayanprajāḥ.
18. rājan aṅgirasaḥ putraḥ saṃvartaḥ nāma dhārmikaḥ
caṅkramīti diśaḥ sarvāḥ digvāsāḥ mohayan prajāḥ
18. rājan aṅgirasaḥ putraḥ saṃvartaḥ nāma dhārmikaḥ
digvāsāḥ sarvāḥ diśaḥ caṅkramīti prajāḥ mohayan
18. O King, the son of Aṅgiras named Saṃvarta, who adheres to (dharma), wanders about in all directions, naked, bewildering the people.
तं गच्छ यदि याज्यं त्वां न वाञ्छति बृहस्पतिः ।
प्रसन्नस्त्वां महाराज संवर्तो याजयिष्यति ॥१९॥
19. taṁ gaccha yadi yājyaṁ tvāṁ na vāñchati bṛhaspatiḥ ,
prasannastvāṁ mahārāja saṁvarto yājayiṣyati.
19. tam gaccha yadi yājyam tvām na vāñchati bṛhaspatiḥ
prasannaḥ tvām mahārāja saṃvartaḥ yājayisyati
19. mahārāja yadi bṛhaspatiḥ tvām yājyam na vāñchati
tam gaccha prasannaḥ saṃvartaḥ tvām yājayisyati
19. Go to him if Bṛhaspati does not want to perform the (yajña) for you. O great king, Saṃvarta, being pleased, will conduct the (yajña) for you.
मरुत्त उवाच ।
संजीवितोऽहं भवता वाक्येनानेन नारद ।
पश्येयं क्व नु संवर्तं शंस मे वदतां वर ॥२०॥
20. marutta uvāca ,
saṁjīvito'haṁ bhavatā vākyenānena nārada ,
paśyeyaṁ kva nu saṁvartaṁ śaṁsa me vadatāṁ vara.
20. maruttaḥ uvāca sañjīvitaḥ aham bhavatā vākyena anena
nārada paśyeyam kva nu saṃvartam śaṃsa me vadatām vara
20. maruttaḥ uvāca nārada vadatām vara bhavatā anena vākyena
aham sañjīvitaḥ kva nu saṃvartam paśyeyam me śaṃsa
20. Marutta said: 'O Nārada, I have been revived by these words of yours. Where, indeed, might I see Saṃvarta? Tell me, O best of speakers!'
कथं च तस्मै वर्तेयं कथं मां न परित्यजेत् ।
प्रत्याख्यातश्च तेनापि नाहं जीवितुमुत्सहे ॥२१॥
21. kathaṁ ca tasmai varteyaṁ kathaṁ māṁ na parityajet ,
pratyākhyātaśca tenāpi nāhaṁ jīvitumutsahe.
21. katham ca tasmai varteyam katham mām na parityajet
pratyākhyātaḥ ca tena api na aham jīvitum utsahe
21. katham ca tasmai varteyam katham mām na parityajet
ca tena api pratyākhyātaḥ aham jīvitum na utsahe
21. And how should I act towards him? How can I ensure he does not abandon me? For if I am rejected by him too, I would not dare to live.
नारद उवाच ।
उन्मत्तवेषं बिभ्रत्स चङ्क्रमीति यथासुखम् ।
वाराणसीं तु नगरीमभीक्ष्णमुपसेवते ॥२२॥
22. nārada uvāca ,
unmattaveṣaṁ bibhratsa caṅkramīti yathāsukham ,
vārāṇasīṁ tu nagarīmabhīkṣṇamupasevate.
22. nāradaḥ uvāca unmattaveṣam bibhrat saḥ caṅkramīti
yathāsukham vārāṇasīm tu nagarīm abhīkṣṇam upasevate
22. nāradaḥ uvāca saḥ unmattaveṣam bibhrat yathāsukham
caṅkramīti tu abhīkṣṇam vārāṇasīm nagarīm upasevate
22. Nārada said: "Bearing the guise of a madman, he wanders about as he pleases, but he frequently resorts to the city of Vārāṇasī."
तस्या द्वारं समासाद्य न्यसेथाः कुणपं क्वचित् ।
तं दृष्ट्वा यो निवर्तेत स संवर्तो महीपते ॥२३॥
23. tasyā dvāraṁ samāsādya nyasethāḥ kuṇapaṁ kvacit ,
taṁ dṛṣṭvā yo nivarteta sa saṁvarto mahīpate.
23. tasyāḥ dvāram samāsādya nyasethāḥ kuṇapam kvacit
tam dṛṣṭvā yaḥ nivarteta saḥ saṃvartaḥ mahīpate
23. mahīpate tasyāḥ dvāram samāsādya kvacit kuṇapam
nyasethāḥ tam dṛṣṭvā yaḥ nivarteta saḥ saṃvartaḥ
23. Having reached the door of that (city), you should place a corpse somewhere. O king, whoever turns back after seeing that [corpse] – he is Saṃvarta.
तं पृष्ठतोऽनुगच्छेथा यत्र गच्छेत्स वीर्यवान् ।
तमेकान्ते समासाद्य प्राञ्जलिः शरणं व्रजेः ॥२४॥
24. taṁ pṛṣṭhato'nugacchethā yatra gacchetsa vīryavān ,
tamekānte samāsādya prāñjaliḥ śaraṇaṁ vrajeḥ.
24. tam pṛṣṭhataḥ anugacchethāḥ yatra gacchet saḥ vīryavān
tam ekānte samāsādya prāñjaliḥ śaraṇam vrajeḥ
24. saḥ vīryavān yatra gacchet tam pṛṣṭhataḥ anugacchethāḥ
tam ekānte samāsādya prāñjaliḥ śaraṇam vrajeḥ
24. You should follow him from behind wherever that mighty one goes. Having approached him in a secluded place, you should, with folded hands, seek refuge (śaraṇa).
पृच्छेत्त्वां यदि केनाहं तवाख्यात इति स्म ह ।
ब्रूयास्त्वं नारदेनेति संतप्त इव शत्रुहन् ॥२५॥
25. pṛcchettvāṁ yadi kenāhaṁ tavākhyāta iti sma ha ,
brūyāstvaṁ nāradeneti saṁtapta iva śatruhan.
25. pṛcchet tvām yadi kena aham tava ākhyātaḥ iti sma
ha brūyāḥ tvam nāradena iti saṃtaptaḥ iva śatruhant
25. śatruhant yadi saḥ tvām pṛcchet "aham kena tava ākhyātaḥ"
iti sma ha tvam "nāradena" iti brūyāḥ saṃtaptaḥ iva
25. If he asks you, 'By whom have I been told to you?', you should say, 'By Nārada,' as if distressed, O destroyer of enemies.
स चेत्त्वामनुयुञ्जीत ममाभिगमनेप्सया ।
शंसेथा वह्निमारूढं मामपि त्वमशङ्कया ॥२६॥
26. sa cettvāmanuyuñjīta mamābhigamanepsayā ,
śaṁsethā vahnimārūḍhaṁ māmapi tvamaśaṅkayā.
26. saḥ cet tvām anuyuñjīta mama abhigamanepsayā
śaṃsethāḥ vahnim ārūḍham mām api tvam aśaṅkayā
26. saḥ cet mama abhigamanepsayā tvām anuyuñjīta,
tvam aśaṅkayā mām vahnim ārūḍham api śaṃsethāḥ
26. If he questions you with the desire to approach me, you should tell him, without hesitation, that I have ascended the fire.
व्यास उवाच ।
स तथेति प्रतिश्रुत्य पूजयित्वा च नारदम् ।
अभ्यनुज्ञाय राजर्षिर्ययौ वाराणसीं पुरीम् ॥२७॥
27. vyāsa uvāca ,
sa tatheti pratiśrutya pūjayitvā ca nāradam ,
abhyanujñāya rājarṣiryayau vārāṇasīṁ purīm.
27. vyāsaḥ uvāca saḥ tathā iti pratiśrutya pūjayitvā ca
nāradam abhyanuñjāya rājārṣiḥ yayau vārāṇasīm purīm
27. vyāsaḥ uvāca saḥ rājārṣiḥ tathā iti pratiśrutya,
ca nāradam pūjayitvā,
abhyanuñjāya vārāṇasīm purīm yayau
27. Vyāsa said: That royal sage (rājārṣi), having promised, 'So be it,' and having honored Nārada and taken his leave, went to the city of Vārāṇasī.
तत्र गत्वा यथोक्तं स पुर्या द्वारे महायशाः ।
कुणपं स्थापयामास नारदस्य वचः स्मरन् ॥२८॥
28. tatra gatvā yathoktaṁ sa puryā dvāre mahāyaśāḥ ,
kuṇapaṁ sthāpayāmāsa nāradasya vacaḥ smaran.
28. tatra gatvā yathā uktam saḥ puryāḥ dvāre mahāyaśāḥ
kuṇapam sthāpayāmāsa nāradasya vacaḥ smaran
28. tatra gatvā,
saḥ mahāyaśāḥ yathā uktam nāradasya vacaḥ smaran,
puryāḥ dvāre kuṇapam sthāpayāmāsa
28. Having gone there, that illustrious one (the royal sage), as instructed, placed a corpse at the city gate, remembering Nārada's words.
यौगपद्येन विप्रश्च स पुरीद्वारमाविशत् ।
ततः स कुणपं दृष्ट्वा सहसा स न्यवर्तत ॥२९॥
29. yaugapadyena vipraśca sa purīdvāramāviśat ,
tataḥ sa kuṇapaṁ dṛṣṭvā sahasā sa nyavartata.
29. yaugapadyena vipraḥ ca saḥ purīdvāram āviśat
tataḥ saḥ kuṇapam dṛṣṭvā sahasā saḥ nyavartata
29. ca yaugapadyena saḥ vipraḥ purīdvāram āviśat
tataḥ saḥ kuṇapam dṛṣṭvā sahasā saḥ nyavartata
29. And simultaneously, that brahmin (vipra) entered the city gate. Then, upon seeing the corpse, he suddenly turned back.
स तं निवृत्तमालक्ष्य प्राञ्जलिः पृष्ठतोऽन्वगात् ।
आविक्षितो महीपालः संवर्तमुपशिक्षितुम् ॥३०॥
30. sa taṁ nivṛttamālakṣya prāñjaliḥ pṛṣṭhato'nvagāt ,
āvikṣito mahīpālaḥ saṁvartamupaśikṣitum.

anvagāt āvikṣitaḥ mahīpālaḥ saṃvartam upaśikṣitum

30. Seeing that he had turned back, the king Āvikṣita, with folded hands, followed him from behind, intending to receive instruction from Saṃvarta.
स एनं विजने दृष्ट्वा पांसुभिः कर्दमेन च ।
श्लेष्मणा चापि राजानं ष्ठीवनैश्च समाकिरत् ॥३१॥
31. sa enaṁ vijane dṛṣṭvā pāṁsubhiḥ kardamena ca ,
śleṣmaṇā cāpi rājānaṁ ṣṭhīvanaiśca samākirat.

śleṣmaṇā ca api rājānam ṣṭhīvanaiḥ ca samākirat

31. When Saṃvarta saw the king in a solitary place, he pelted him with dust, mud, phlegm, and even spit.
स तथा बाध्यमानोऽपि संवर्तेन महीपतिः ।
अन्वगादेव तमृषिं प्राञ्जलिः संप्रसादयन् ॥३२॥
32. sa tathā bādhyamāno'pi saṁvartena mahīpatiḥ ,
anvagādeva tamṛṣiṁ prāñjaliḥ saṁprasādayan.
32. saḥ tathā bādhyamānaḥ api saṃvartena mahīpatiḥ
anvagāt eva tam ṛṣim prāñjaliḥ saṃprasādayan
32. saḥ mahīpatiḥ saṃvartena tathā bādhyamānaḥ api
prāñjaliḥ saṃprasādayan eva tam ṛṣim anvagāt
32. Even though the king was thus harassed by Saṃvarta, he continued to follow that sage, with folded hands, pleading with him.
ततो निवृत्य संवर्तः परिश्रान्त उपाविशत् ।
शीतलच्छायमासाद्य न्यग्रोधं बहुशाखिनम् ॥३३॥
33. tato nivṛtya saṁvartaḥ pariśrānta upāviśat ,
śītalacchāyamāsādya nyagrodhaṁ bahuśākhinam.
33. tataḥ nivṛtya saṃvartaḥ pariśrāntaḥ upāviśat
śītalacchāyam āsādya nyagrodham bahuśākhinam
33. tataḥ saṃvartaḥ nivṛtya pariśrāntaḥ śītalacchāyam

33. Then, Saṃvarta, having turned back and being exhausted, sat down after reaching a Banyan tree with many branches and cool shade.
