संजय उवाच ।
ते हत्वा सर्वपाञ्चालान्द्रौपदेयांश्च सर्वशः ।
अगच्छन्सहितास्तत्र यत्र दुर्योधनो हतः ॥१॥

1. Sañjaya said: Having slain all the Pañcālas and completely the sons of Draupadī, they went together to that place where Duryodhana had been killed.
गत्वा चैनमपश्यंस्ते किंचित्प्राणं नराधिपम् ।
ततो रथेभ्यः प्रस्कन्द्य परिवव्रुस्तवात्मजम् ॥२॥
2. gatvā cainamapaśyaṁste kiṁcitprāṇaṁ narādhipam ,
tato rathebhyaḥ praskandya parivavrustavātmajam.
2. gatvā ca enam apaśyan te kiṃcit prāṇam narādhipam
tataḥ rathebhyaḥ praskandya parivavruḥ tava ātmajam
2. te gatvā enam kiṃcit prāṇam narādhipam apaśyan.

2. O ruler of men, having arrived there, they saw him, the lord of men, with but a little life. Then, leaping from their chariots, they surrounded your son.
तं भग्नसक्थं राजेन्द्र कृच्छ्रप्राणमचेतसम् ।
वमन्तं रुधिरं वक्त्रादपश्यन्वसुधातले ॥३॥
3. taṁ bhagnasakthaṁ rājendra kṛcchraprāṇamacetasam ,
vamantaṁ rudhiraṁ vaktrādapaśyanvasudhātale.
3. tam bhagnasaktham rājendra kṛcchraprāṇam acetasam
vamantam rudhiram vaktrāt apaśyan vasudhātale
3. rājendra,
te tam bhagnasaktham kṛcchraprāṇam acetasam vaktrāt rudhiram vamantam vasudhātale apaśyan.
3. O greatest of kings (rājendra), they saw him on the ground, his thighs broken, barely breathing (kṛcchraprāṇa), unconscious, and vomiting blood from his mouth.
वृतं समन्ताद्बहुभिः श्वापदैर्घोरदर्शनैः ।
शालावृकगणैश्चैव भक्षयिष्यद्भिरन्तिकात् ॥४॥
4. vṛtaṁ samantādbahubhiḥ śvāpadairghoradarśanaiḥ ,
śālāvṛkagaṇaiścaiva bhakṣayiṣyadbhirantikāt.
4. vṛtam samantāt bahubhiḥ śvāpadaiḥ ghoradarśanaiḥ
śālāvṛkagaṇaiḥ ca eva bhakṣayiṣyadbhiḥ antikāt
4. samantāt bahubhiḥ ghoradarśanaiḥ śvāpadaiḥ ca eva śālāvṛkagaṇaiḥ antikāt bhakṣayiṣyadbhiḥ vṛtam (āsīt).
4. He was surrounded on all sides by many terrifying-looking beasts of prey and packs of jackals (śālāvṛka) that were about to devour him from close by.
निवारयन्तं कृच्छ्रात्ताञ्श्वापदान्संचिखादिषून् ।
विवेष्टमानं मह्यां च सुभृशं गाढवेदनम् ॥५॥
5. nivārayantaṁ kṛcchrāttāñśvāpadānsaṁcikhādiṣūn ,
viveṣṭamānaṁ mahyāṁ ca subhṛśaṁ gāḍhavedanam.
5. nivārayantam kṛcchrāt tān śvāpadān saṃcikhādiṣūn
viveṣṭamānam mahyām ca subhṛśam gāḍhavedanam
5. (te tam apaśyan) kṛcchrāt saṃcikhādiṣūn tān śvāpadān nivārayantam ca mahyām subhṛśam gāḍhavedanam viveṣṭamānam.
5. He was, with great difficulty, warding off those beasts of prey that desired to devour him, and he was writhing on the ground, in very severe, agonizing pain.
तं शयानं महात्मानं भूमौ स्वरुधिरोक्षितम् ।
हतशिष्टास्त्रयो वीराः शोकार्ताः पर्यवारयन् ।
अश्वत्थामा कृपश्चैव कृतवर्मा च सात्वतः ॥६॥
6. taṁ śayānaṁ mahātmānaṁ bhūmau svarudhirokṣitam ,
hataśiṣṭāstrayo vīrāḥ śokārtāḥ paryavārayan ,
aśvatthāmā kṛpaścaiva kṛtavarmā ca sātvataḥ.
6. taṃ śayānaṃ mahātmānaṃ bhūmau
svarudhirokṣitam hataśiṣṭāḥ trayaḥ vīrāḥ
śokārtāḥ paryavārayan aśvatthāmā
kṛpaḥ ca eva kṛtavarmā ca sātvataḥ

ca sātvataḥ hataśiṣṭāḥ trayaḥ vīrāḥ
śokārtāḥ bhūmau svarudhirokṣitam
śayānaṃ taṃ mahātmānaṃ paryavārayan
6. The three remaining heroes - Ashvatthama, Kripa, and Kritavarma the Satvata - afflicted by sorrow, surrounded that great-souled one who was lying on the ground, drenched in his own blood.
तैस्त्रिभिः शोणितादिग्धैर्निःश्वसद्भिर्महारथैः ।
शुशुभे संवृतो राजा वेदी त्रिभिरिवाग्निभिः ॥७॥
7. taistribhiḥ śoṇitādigdhairniḥśvasadbhirmahārathaiḥ ,
śuśubhe saṁvṛto rājā vedī tribhirivāgnibhiḥ.
7. taiḥ tribhiḥ śoṇitādigdhaiḥ niḥśvasadbhiḥ mahārathaiḥ
śuśubhe saṃvṛtaḥ rājā vedī tribhiḥ iva agnibhiḥ
7. rājā śoṇitādigdhaiḥ niḥśvasadbhiḥ taiḥ tribhiḥ
mahārathaiḥ saṃvṛtaḥ vedī tribhiḥ agnibhiḥ iva śuśubhe
7. Surrounded by those three great charioteers, who were smeared with blood and sighing deeply, the king shone like a sacrificial altar (vedī) surrounded by three fires.
ते तं शयानं संप्रेक्ष्य राजानमतथोचितम् ।
अविषह्येन दुःखेन ततस्ते रुरुदुस्त्रयः ॥८॥
8. te taṁ śayānaṁ saṁprekṣya rājānamatathocitam ,
aviṣahyena duḥkhena tataste rurudustrayaḥ.
8. te taṃ śayānaṃ samprekṣya rājānam atathocitam
aviṣahyeṇa duḥkhena tataḥ te ruruduḥ trayaḥ
8. te trayaḥ taṃ śayānaṃ atathocitam rājānam
samprekṣya aviṣahyeṇa duḥkhena tataḥ ruruduḥ
8. Seeing him, the king, lying there in such an unfitting state, those three then wept with unbearable sorrow.
ततस्ते रुधिरं हस्तैर्मुखान्निर्मृज्य तस्य ह ।
रणे राज्ञः शयानस्य कृपणं पर्यदेवयन् ॥९॥
9. tataste rudhiraṁ hastairmukhānnirmṛjya tasya ha ,
raṇe rājñaḥ śayānasya kṛpaṇaṁ paryadevayan.
9. tataḥ te rudhiraṃ hastaiḥ mukhāt nirmṛjya tasya
ha raṇe rājñaḥ śayānasya kṛpaṇaṃ paryadevayan
9. tataḥ te hastaiḥ tasya mukhāt rudhiraṃ nirmṛjya
raṇe śayānasya rājñaḥ kṛpaṇaṃ ha paryadevayan
9. Then, wiping his blood from his face with their hands, they lamented piteously for the king who was lying there on the battlefield.
कृप उवाच ।
न दैवस्यातिभारोऽस्ति यदयं रुधिरोक्षितः ।
एकादशचमूभर्ता शेते दुर्योधनो हतः ॥१०॥
10. kṛpa uvāca ,
na daivasyātibhāro'sti yadayaṁ rudhirokṣitaḥ ,
ekādaśacamūbhartā śete duryodhano hataḥ.
10. kṛpaḥ uvāca na daivasya atibhāraḥ asti yat ayam
rudhirokṣitaḥ ekādaśacamūbhartā śete duryodhanaḥ hataḥ
10. kṛpaḥ uvāca daivasya atibhāraḥ na asti yat ayam
ekādaśacamūbhartā rudhirokṣitaḥ hataḥ duryodhanaḥ śete
10. Kṛpa said: There is no excessive burden for destiny, that this Duryodhana, the lord of eleven armies, lies slain, drenched in blood.
पश्य चामीकराभस्य चामीकरविभूषिताम् ।
गदां गदाप्रियस्येमां समीपे पतितां भुवि ॥११॥
11. paśya cāmīkarābhasya cāmīkaravibhūṣitām ,
gadāṁ gadāpriyasyemāṁ samīpe patitāṁ bhuvi.
11. paśya cāmīkarābhasya cāmīkaravibhūṣitām
gadām gadāpriyasya imām samīpe patitām bhuvi
11. paśya imām cāmīkarābhasya gadāpriyasya

11. Behold this mace, adorned with gold, of him who shone like gold and loved the mace, lying fallen nearby on the ground.
इयमेनं गदा शूरं न जहाति रणे रणे ।
स्वर्गायापि व्रजन्तं हि न जहाति यशस्विनम् ॥१२॥
12. iyamenaṁ gadā śūraṁ na jahāti raṇe raṇe ,
svargāyāpi vrajantaṁ hi na jahāti yaśasvinam.
12. iyam enam gadā śūram na jahāti raṇe raṇe
svargāya api vrajantam hi na jahāti yaśasvinam
12. iyam gadā enam śūram raṇe raṇe na jahāti hi
api svargāya vrajantam yaśasvinam na jahāti
12. This mace does not abandon this hero in every battle; indeed, it does not abandon the glorious one even as he proceeds to heaven.
पश्येमां सह वीरेण जाम्बूनदविभूषिताम् ।
शयानां शयने धर्मे भार्यां प्रीतिमतीमिव ॥१३॥
13. paśyemāṁ saha vīreṇa jāmbūnadavibhūṣitām ,
śayānāṁ śayane dharme bhāryāṁ prītimatīmiva.
13. paśya imām saha vīreṇa jāmbūnadavibhūṣitām
śayānām śayane dharme bhāryām prītimatīm iva
13. paśya imām jāmbūnadavibhūṣitām vīreṇa saha
śayānām dharme śayane prītimatīm bhāryām iva
13. Behold this mace, adorned with gold, lying with the hero, as if it were a loving wife on a bed of duty (dharma).
यो वै मूर्धावसिक्तानामग्रे यातः परंतपः ।
स हतो ग्रसते पांसून्पश्य कालस्य पर्ययम् ॥१४॥
14. yo vai mūrdhāvasiktānāmagre yātaḥ paraṁtapaḥ ,
sa hato grasate pāṁsūnpaśya kālasya paryayam.
14. yaḥ vai mūrdhāvasiktānām agre yātaḥ paraṃtapaḥ
saḥ hataḥ grasate pāṃsūn paśya kālasya paryayam
14. yaḥ vai mūrdhāvasiktānām agre yātaḥ paraṃtapaḥ
saḥ hataḥ pāṃsūn grasate paśya kālasya paryayam
14. Indeed, he who was the foremost among anointed kings, the tormentor of enemies, now, slain, devours dust. Behold the reversal of time!
येनाजौ निहता भूमावशेरत पुरा द्विषः ।
स भूमौ निहतः शेते कुरुराजः परैरयम् ॥१५॥
15. yenājau nihatā bhūmāvaśerata purā dviṣaḥ ,
sa bhūmau nihataḥ śete kururājaḥ parairayam.
15. yena ājau nihatāḥ bhūmau aśerata purā dviṣaḥ
saḥ bhūmau nihataḥ śete kururājaḥ paraiḥ ayam
15. yena ājau purā dviṣaḥ nihatāḥ bhūmau aśerata
ayam saḥ kururājaḥ paraiḥ nihataḥ bhūmau śete
15. By whom enemies were formerly slain in battle and lay on the ground - that very king of the Kurus now lies slain on the ground by his enemies.
भयान्नमन्ति राजानो यस्य स्म शतसंघशः ।
स वीरशयने शेते क्रव्याद्भिः परिवारितः ॥१६॥
16. bhayānnamanti rājāno yasya sma śatasaṁghaśaḥ ,
sa vīraśayane śete kravyādbhiḥ parivāritaḥ.
16. bhayāt namanti rājānaḥ yasya sma śatasaṃghaśaḥ
saḥ vīraśayane śete kravyādbhiḥ parivāritaḥ
16. yasya bhayāt rājānaḥ śatasaṃghaśaḥ namanti sma
saḥ kravyādbhiḥ parivāritaḥ vīraśayane śete
16. He, before whom kings formerly bowed in hundreds out of fear, now lies on the hero's bed, surrounded by carrion-eaters.
उपासत नृपाः पूर्वमर्थहेतोर्यमीश्वरम् ।
धिक्सद्यो निहतः शेते पश्य कालस्य पर्ययम् ॥१७॥
17. upāsata nṛpāḥ pūrvamarthahetoryamīśvaram ,
dhiksadyo nihataḥ śete paśya kālasya paryayam.
17. upāsata nṛpāḥ pūrvam arthahetoḥ yam īśvaram
dhik sadyaḥ nihataḥ śete paśya kālasya paryayam
17. dhik nṛpāḥ pūrvam arthahetoḥ yam īśvaram upāsata
sadyaḥ nihataḥ śete paśya kālasya paryayam
17. Shame! He, whom kings formerly served for the sake of gain, now lies suddenly slain. Behold the reversal of time!
संजय उवाच ।
तं शयानं नृपश्रेष्ठं ततो भरतसत्तम ।
अश्वत्थामा समालोक्य करुणं पर्यदेवयत् ॥१८॥
18. saṁjaya uvāca ,
taṁ śayānaṁ nṛpaśreṣṭhaṁ tato bharatasattama ,
aśvatthāmā samālokya karuṇaṁ paryadevayat.
18. sañjayaḥ uvāca | tam śayānam nṛpaśreṣṭham tataḥ
bharatasattama | aśvatthāmā samālokya karuṇam paryadevayat
18. sañjayaḥ uvāca bharatasattama tataḥ aśvatthāmā tam
nṛpaśreṣṭham śayānam samālokya karuṇam paryadevayat
18. Sañjaya said: O best among the Bharatas (Dhṛtarāṣṭra), Aśvatthāmā, having seen that best of kings (Duryodhana) lying there, lamented piteously.
आहुस्त्वां राजशार्दूल मुख्यं सर्वधनुष्मताम् ।
धनाध्यक्षोपमं युद्धे शिष्यं संकर्षणस्य ह ॥१९॥
19. āhustvāṁ rājaśārdūla mukhyaṁ sarvadhanuṣmatām ,
dhanādhyakṣopamaṁ yuddhe śiṣyaṁ saṁkarṣaṇasya ha.
19. āhuḥ tvām rājaśārdūla mukhyam sarvadhanuṣmatām |
dhanādhyakṣopamam yuddhe śiṣyam saṃkarṣaṇasya ha
19. rājaśārdūla ha āhuḥ tvām sarvadhanuṣmatām mukhyam,
yuddhe dhanādhyakṣopamam,
saṃkarṣaṇasya śiṣyam
19. O tiger among kings, indeed people called you the foremost of all archers, comparable to Kubera, the lord of wealth, in battle, and a disciple of Saṃkarṣaṇa.
कथं विवरमद्राक्षीद्भीमसेनस्तवानघ ।
बलिनः कृतिनो नित्यं स च पापात्मवान्नृप ॥२०॥
20. kathaṁ vivaramadrākṣīdbhīmasenastavānagha ,
balinaḥ kṛtino nityaṁ sa ca pāpātmavānnṛpa.
20. katham vivaram adrākṣīt bhīmasenaḥ tava anagha
| balinaḥ kṛtinaḥ nityam saḥ ca pāpātmavān nṛpa
20. anagha nṛpa katham bhīmasenaḥ vivaram adrākṣīt?
tava balinaḥ kṛtinaḥ nityam? ca saḥ pāpātmavān
20. O sinless one (Duryodhana), O king, how did Bhīmasena find a weak point in you, who were always mighty and accomplished? And that Bhīmasena is truly wicked.
कालो नूनं महाराज लोकेऽस्मिन्बलवत्तरः ।
पश्यामो निहतं त्वां चेद्भीमसेनेन संयुगे ॥२१॥
21. kālo nūnaṁ mahārāja loke'sminbalavattaraḥ ,
paśyāmo nihataṁ tvāṁ cedbhīmasenena saṁyuge.
21. kālaḥ nūnam mahārāja loke asmin balavattaraḥ |
paśyāmaḥ nihatam tvām cet bhīmasenena saṃyuge
21. mahārāja cet vayam tvām bhīmasenena saṃyuge nihatam paśyāmaḥ,
nūnam asmin loke kālaḥ balavattaraḥ
21. O great king, if we see you struck down by Bhīmasena in battle, then indeed Time (kāla) is more powerful in this world.
कथं त्वां सर्वधर्मज्ञं क्षुद्रः पापो वृकोदरः ।
निकृत्या हतवान्मन्दो नूनं कालो दुरत्ययः ॥२२॥
22. kathaṁ tvāṁ sarvadharmajñaṁ kṣudraḥ pāpo vṛkodaraḥ ,
nikṛtyā hatavānmando nūnaṁ kālo duratyayaḥ.
22. katham tvām sarvadharmajñam kṣudraḥ pāpaḥ vṛkodaraḥ
nikṛtyā hatavān mandaḥ nūnam kālaḥ duratyayaḥ
22. katham kṣudraḥ pāpaḥ mandaḥ vṛkodaraḥ nikṛtyā
sarvadharmajñam tvām hatavān nūnam kālaḥ duratyayaḥ
22. How could that mean, sinful, and foolish Vrikodara (vṛkodara) have killed you, the knower of all natural laws (dharma), through deceit? Surely, time is irresistible.
धर्मयुद्धे ह्यधर्मेण समाहूयौजसा मृधे ।
गदया भीमसेनेन निर्भिन्ने सक्थिनी तव ॥२३॥
23. dharmayuddhe hyadharmeṇa samāhūyaujasā mṛdhe ,
gadayā bhīmasenena nirbhinne sakthinī tava.
23. dharmayuddhe hi adharmeṇa samāhūya ojasā mṛdhe
gadayā bhīmasenena nirbhinne sakthinī tava
23. hi dharmayuddhe mṛdhe ojasā samāhūya adharmeṇa
bhīmasenena gadayā tava sakthinī nirbhinne
23. For in the battle, having challenged you with his might in a righteous war (dharmayuddha), your two thighs were shattered by Bhīmasena (bhīmasena) with his mace through unrighteousness (adharma).
अधर्मेण हतस्याजौ मृद्यमानं पदा शिरः ।
यदुपेक्षितवान्क्षुद्रो धिक्तमस्तु युधिष्ठिरम् ॥२४॥
24. adharmeṇa hatasyājau mṛdyamānaṁ padā śiraḥ ,
yadupekṣitavānkṣudro dhiktamastu yudhiṣṭhiram.
24. adharmeṇa hatasya ājau mṛdyamānam padā śiraḥ yat
upekṣitavān kṣudraḥ dhik tam astu yudhiṣṭhiram
24. yat kṣudraḥ adharmeṇa ājau hatasya padā mṛdyamānam
śiraḥ upekṣitavān dhik tam yudhiṣṭhiram astu
24. Because that contemptible Yudhishthira (yudhiṣṭhira) overlooked the head of the one killed by unrighteousness (adharma) in battle, being trampled by a foot, shame on him!
युद्धेष्वपवदिष्यन्ति योधा नूनं वृकोदरम् ।
यावत्स्थास्यन्ति भूतानि निकृत्या ह्यसि पातितः ॥२५॥
25. yuddheṣvapavadiṣyanti yodhā nūnaṁ vṛkodaram ,
yāvatsthāsyanti bhūtāni nikṛtyā hyasi pātitaḥ.
25. yuddheṣu apavadiṣyanti yodhāḥ nūnam vṛkodaram
yāvat sthāsyanti bhūtāni nikṛtyā hi asi pātitaḥ
25. nūnam yodhāḥ yuddheṣu vṛkodaram apavadiṣyanti
yāvat bhūtāni sthāsyanti hi nikṛtyā asi pātitaḥ
25. Surely, warriors will blame Vrikodara (vṛkodara) in battles as long as living beings exist, for you have been brought down by deceit.
ननु रामोऽब्रवीद्राजंस्त्वां सदा यदुनन्दनः ।
दुर्योधनसमो नास्ति गदया इति वीर्यवान् ॥२६॥
26. nanu rāmo'bravīdrājaṁstvāṁ sadā yadunandanaḥ ,
duryodhanasamo nāsti gadayā iti vīryavān.
26. nanu rāmaḥ abravīt rājan tvām sadā yadu-nandanaḥ
duryodhana-samaḥ na asti gadayā iti vīryavān
26. rājan yadu-nandanaḥ rāmaḥ sadā tvām abravīt nanu
iti gadayā duryodhana-samaḥ vīryavān na asti
26. O King, indeed, Rama, the delight of the Yadus, always told you, "There is no one equal to Duryodhana in mace fighting, for he is mighty."
श्लाघते त्वां हि वार्ष्णेयो राजन्संसत्सु भारत ।
सुशिष्यो मम कौरव्यो गदायुद्ध इति प्रभो ॥२७॥
27. ślāghate tvāṁ hi vārṣṇeyo rājansaṁsatsu bhārata ,
suśiṣyo mama kauravyo gadāyuddha iti prabho.
27. ślāghate tvām hi vārṣṇeyaḥ rājan saṃsatsu bhārata
su-śiṣyaḥ mama kauravyaḥ gadā-yuddhaḥ iti prabho
27. rājan bhārata vārṣṇeyaḥ hi tvām saṃsatsu ślāghate
iti प्रभो mama kauravyaḥ su-śiṣyaḥ gadā-yuddhaḥ
27. O King, O Bhārata, indeed, the Vārṣṇeya praises you in assemblies, saying, "O Lord, this Kaurava is my excellent disciple in mace fighting."
यां गतिं क्षत्रियस्याहुः प्रशस्तां परमर्षयः ।
हतस्याभिमुखस्याजौ प्राप्तस्त्वमसि तां गतिम् ॥२८॥
28. yāṁ gatiṁ kṣatriyasyāhuḥ praśastāṁ paramarṣayaḥ ,
hatasyābhimukhasyājau prāptastvamasi tāṁ gatim.
28. yām gatim kṣatriyasya āhuḥ praśastām parama-ṛṣayaḥ
hatasya abhimukhasya ājau prāptaḥ tvam asi tām gatim
28. parama-ṛṣayaḥ yām praśastām gatim kṣatriyasya āhuḥ
ājau abhimukhasya hatasya tām gatim tvam prāptaḥ asi
28. The great sages declare that the most commendable destiny (gati) for a warrior (kṣatriya) is to be slain while facing the enemy in battle. You have indeed attained that very destiny (gati).
दुर्योधन न शोचामि त्वामहं पुरुषर्षभ ।
हतपुत्रां तु शोचामि गान्धारीं पितरं च ते ।
भिक्षुकौ विचरिष्येते शोचन्तौ पृथिवीमिमाम् ॥२९॥
29. duryodhana na śocāmi tvāmahaṁ puruṣarṣabha ,
hataputrāṁ tu śocāmi gāndhārīṁ pitaraṁ ca te ,
bhikṣukau vicariṣyete śocantau pṛthivīmimām.
29. duryodhana na śocāmi tvām aham
puruṣa-ṛṣabha hata-putrām tu śocāmi
gāndhārīm pitaram ca te bhikṣukau
vicariṣyete śocantau pṛthivīm imām
29. duryodhana puruṣa-ṛṣabha aham tvām na śocāmi.
tu hata-putrām gāndhārīm ca te pitaram śocāmi.
bhikṣukau śocantau imām pṛthivīm vicariṣyete.
29. O Duryodhana, O bull among men, I do not mourn for you. However, I do mourn for your mother Gāndhārī, whose sons have been killed, and for your father. They both will wander as beggars, grieving over this earth.
धिगस्तु कृष्णं वार्ष्णेयमर्जुनं चापि दुर्मतिम् ।
धर्मज्ञमानिनौ यौ त्वां वध्यमानमुपेक्षताम् ॥३०॥
30. dhigastu kṛṣṇaṁ vārṣṇeyamarjunaṁ cāpi durmatim ,
dharmajñamāninau yau tvāṁ vadhyamānamupekṣatām.
30. dhik astu kṛṣṇam vārṣṇeyam arjunam ca api durmatim
dharma-jña-māninau yau tvām vadhyamānam upekṣatām
30. yau dharma-jña-māninau tvām vadhyamānam upekṣatām,
vārṣṇeyam kṛṣṇam ca api durmatim arjunam dhik astu
30. Shame upon Krishna of the Vṛṣṇi clan and also upon the wicked-minded Arjuna! Woe to those two who, considering themselves knowers of (natural) law (dharma), neglected you while you were being slain.
पाण्डवाश्चापि ते सर्वे किं वक्ष्यन्ति नराधिपान् ।
कथं दुर्योधनोऽस्माभिर्हत इत्यनपत्रपाः ॥३१॥
31. pāṇḍavāścāpi te sarve kiṁ vakṣyanti narādhipān ,
kathaṁ duryodhano'smābhirhata ityanapatrapāḥ.
31. pāṇḍavāḥ ca api te sarve kim vakṣyanti narādhipān
katham duryodhanaḥ asmābhiḥ hataḥ iti anapatrapāḥ
31. te sarve anapatrapāḥ pāṇḍavāḥ ca api narādhipān
"asmābhiḥ duryodhanaḥ katham hataḥ" iti kim vakṣyanti
31. And what will all those shameless Pāṇḍavas say to other rulers: "How was Duryodhana killed by us?"
धन्यस्त्वमसि गान्धारे यस्त्वमायोधने हतः ।
प्रयातोऽभिमुखः शत्रून्धर्मेण पुरुषर्षभ ॥३२॥
32. dhanyastvamasi gāndhāre yastvamāyodhane hataḥ ,
prayāto'bhimukhaḥ śatrūndharmeṇa puruṣarṣabha.
32. dhanyaḥ tvam asi gāndhāre yaḥ tvam āyodhane hataḥ
prayātaḥ abhimukhaḥ śatrūn dharmeṇa puruṣa-ṛṣabha
32. he gāndhāre,
he puruṣa-ṛṣabha,
yaḥ tvam āyodhane hataḥ,
śatrūn abhimukhaḥ dharmeṇa prayātaḥ,
tvam dhanyaḥ asi
32. O son of Gandhārī, O best among men (puruṣa-ṛṣabha), blessed are you who were killed in battle, having gone forth facing your enemies righteously, according to (natural) law (dharma).
हतपुत्रा हि गान्धारी निहतज्ञातिबान्धवा ।
प्रज्ञाचक्षुश्च दुर्धर्षः कां गतिं प्रतिपत्स्यते ॥३३॥
33. hataputrā hi gāndhārī nihatajñātibāndhavā ,
prajñācakṣuśca durdharṣaḥ kāṁ gatiṁ pratipatsyate.
33. hata-putrā hi gāndhārī nihata-jñāti-bāndhavā
prajñā-cakṣuḥ ca durdharṣaḥ kām gatim pratipatṣyate
33. hi hata-putrā nihata-jñāti-bāndhavā
gāndhārī kām gatim pratipatṣyate?
ca durdharṣaḥ prajñā-cakṣuḥ
(kām gatim) pratipatṣyate?
33. Indeed, what fate will Gandhārī, whose sons, kinsmen, and relatives have been killed, attain? And what path will the formidable Dhṛtarāṣṭra, whose 'eyes' are wisdom, follow?
धिगस्तु कृतवर्माणं मां कृपं च महारथम् ।
ये वयं न गताः स्वर्गं त्वां पुरस्कृत्य पार्थिवम् ॥३४॥
34. dhigastu kṛtavarmāṇaṁ māṁ kṛpaṁ ca mahāratham ,
ye vayaṁ na gatāḥ svargaṁ tvāṁ puraskṛtya pārthivam.
34. dhik astu kṛtavarmāṇam mām kṛpam ca mahāratham ye
vayam na gatāḥ svargam tvām puraskṛtya pārthivam
34. kṛtavarmāṇam mām kṛpam ca mahāratham dhik astu ye
vayam tvām pārthivam puraskṛtya svargam na gatāḥ
34. Shame on Kṛtavarman, on me, and on Kṛpa, the great charioteer! We who did not go to heaven by making you, the king, our leader.
दातारं सर्वकामानां रक्षितारं प्रजाहितम् ।
यद्वयं नानुगच्छामस्त्वां धिगस्मान्नराधमान् ॥३५॥
35. dātāraṁ sarvakāmānāṁ rakṣitāraṁ prajāhitam ,
yadvayaṁ nānugacchāmastvāṁ dhigasmānnarādhamān.
35. dātāram sarvakāmānām rakṣitāram prajāhitam yat
vayam na anugacchāmaḥ tvām dhik asmān narādhamān
35. yat vayam sarvakāmānām dātāram rakṣitāram prajāhitam
tvām na anugacchāmaḥ (tasmāt) narādhamān asmān dhik
35. Shame on us, the lowest of men, because we did not follow you, who were the giver of all desires, the protector, and the benefactor of the people.
कृपस्य तव वीर्येण मम चैव पितुश्च मे ।
सभृत्यानां नरव्याघ्र रत्नवन्ति गृहाणि च ॥३६॥
36. kṛpasya tava vīryeṇa mama caiva pituśca me ,
sabhṛtyānāṁ naravyāghra ratnavanti gṛhāṇi ca.
36. kṛpasya tava vīryeṇa mama ca eva pituḥ ca me
sabhṛtyānām naravyāghra ratnavanti gṛhāṇi ca

36. O tiger among men, it was by the valor of Kṛpa, by your own, and indeed by my father's, and by my own, that the jeweled houses of those with servants existed.
भवत्प्रसादादस्माभिः समित्रैः सहबान्धवैः ।
अवाप्ताः क्रतवो मुख्या बहवो भूरिदक्षिणाः ॥३७॥
37. bhavatprasādādasmābhiḥ samitraiḥ sahabāndhavaiḥ ,
avāptāḥ kratavo mukhyā bahavo bhūridakṣiṇāḥ.
37. bhavatprasādāt asmābhiḥ samitraiḥ sahabāndhavaiḥ
avāptāḥ kratavaḥ mukhyāḥ bahavaḥ bhūridakṣiṇāḥ

bahavaḥ mukhyāḥ bhūridakṣiṇāḥ kratavaḥ avāptāḥ
37. By your grace, we, along with our friends and relatives, have accomplished many important Vedic rituals (kratu) that involved generous fees (dakṣiṇā).
कुतश्चापीदृशं सार्थमुपलप्स्यामहे वयम् ।
यादृशेन पुरस्कृत्य त्वं गतः सर्वपार्थिवान् ॥३८॥
38. kutaścāpīdṛśaṁ sārthamupalapsyāmahe vayam ,
yādṛśena puraskṛtya tvaṁ gataḥ sarvapārthivān.
38. kutaḥ ca api īdṛśam sārtham upalapsyāmahe vayam
yādṛśena puraskṛtya tvam gataḥ sarvapārthivān
38. vayam kutaḥ ca api īdṛśam sārtham upalapsyāmahe
yādṛśena tvam puraskṛtya sarvapārthivān gataḥ
38. From where else could we obtain such a fellowship (sārtha), by means of which you, having been esteemed, went before all other kings?
वयमेव त्रयो राजन्गच्छन्तं परमां गतिम् ।
यद्वै त्वां नानुगच्छामस्तेन तप्स्यामहे वयम् ॥३९॥
39. vayameva trayo rājangacchantaṁ paramāṁ gatim ,
yadvai tvāṁ nānugacchāmastena tapsyāmahe vayam.
39. vayam eva trayaḥ rājan gacchantam paramām gatim
yat vai tvām na anugacchāmaḥ tena tapsyāmahe vayam
39. rājan vayam eva trayaḥ paramām gatim gacchantam
tvām yat vai na anugacchāmaḥ tena vayam tapsyāmahe
39. O King, because we three alone cannot follow you, who are proceeding to the supreme destination (gati), we shall certainly grieve on account of that.
त्वत्स्वर्गहीना हीनार्थाः स्मरन्तः सुकृतस्य ते ।
किं नाम तद्भवेत्कर्म येन त्वानुव्रजेम वै ॥४०॥
40. tvatsvargahīnā hīnārthāḥ smarantaḥ sukṛtasya te ,
kiṁ nāma tadbhavetkarma yena tvānuvrajema vai.
40. tvat-svarga-hīnāḥ hīna-arthāḥ smarantaḥ sukṛtasya te
kim nāma tat bhavet karma yena tvā anuvrajema vai
40. tvatsvargahīnāḥ hīnārthāḥ te sukṛtasya smarantaḥ yena
vayam tvā anuvrajema vai tat kim nāma karma bhavet
40. Bereft of your presence in heaven and having lost our purpose, as we remember your good deeds (sukṛta), what indeed would that action (karma) be by which we might truly follow you?
दुःखं नूनं कुरुश्रेष्ठ चरिष्यामो महीमिमाम् ।
हीनानां नस्त्वया राजन्कुतः शान्तिः कुतः सुखम् ॥४१॥
41. duḥkhaṁ nūnaṁ kuruśreṣṭha cariṣyāmo mahīmimām ,
hīnānāṁ nastvayā rājankutaḥ śāntiḥ kutaḥ sukham.
41. duḥkham nūnam kuruśreṣṭha cariṣyāmaḥ mahīm imām
hīnānām nas tvayā rājan kutaḥ śāntiḥ kutaḥ sukham
41. kuruśreṣṭha nūnam vayam imām mahīm duḥkham cariṣyāmaḥ
rājan tvayā hīnānām nas kutaḥ śāntiḥ kutaḥ sukham
41. O best among the Kurus, we shall surely wander this earth in great sorrow. For us, O King, who are deprived of you, from where can there be peace (śānti)? From where can there be happiness (sukham)?
गत्वैतांस्तु महाराज समेत्य त्वं महारथान् ।
यथाश्रेष्ठं यथाज्येष्ठं पूजयेर्वचनान्मम ॥४२॥
42. gatvaitāṁstu mahārāja sametya tvaṁ mahārathān ,
yathāśreṣṭhaṁ yathājyeṣṭhaṁ pūjayervacanānmama.
42. gatvā etān tu mahārāja sametya tvam mahārathān
yathāśreṣṭham yathājyeṣṭham pūjayeḥ vacanāt mama
42. mahārāja tvam etān mahārathān gatvā sametya
yathāśreṣṭham yathājyeṣṭham mama vacanāt pūjayeḥ
42. O great king, having gone to these great warriors and met them, you should honor them according to their excellence and seniority, by my command.
आचार्यं पूजयित्वा च केतुं सर्वधनुष्मताम् ।
हतं मयाद्य शंसेथा धृष्टद्युम्नं नराधिप ॥४३॥
43. ācāryaṁ pūjayitvā ca ketuṁ sarvadhanuṣmatām ,
hataṁ mayādya śaṁsethā dhṛṣṭadyumnaṁ narādhipa.
43. ācāryam pūjayitvā ca ketum sarvadhanuṣmatām
hatam mayā adya śaṃsethāḥ dhṛṣṭadyumnam narādhipa
43. narādhipa ca sarvadhanuṣmatām ketum ācāryam
pūjayitvā dhṛṣṭadyumnam mayā adya hatam śaṃsethāḥ
43. And, O king of men, after honoring the preceptor (Droṇa), who is the foremost among all archers, you should then declare that Dhṛṣṭadyumna has been slain by me today.
परिष्वजेथा राजानं बाह्लिकं सुमहारथम् ।
सैन्धवं सोमदत्तं च भूरिश्रवसमेव च ॥४४॥
44. pariṣvajethā rājānaṁ bāhlikaṁ sumahāratham ,
saindhavaṁ somadattaṁ ca bhūriśravasameva ca.
44. pariṣvajethāḥ rājānam bāhlikam sumahāratham
saindhavam somadattam ca bhūriśravasam eva ca
44. rājānam bāhlikam sumahāratham ca saindhavam
somadattam ca bhūriśravasam eva pariṣvajethāḥ
44. You should embrace King Bāhlika, that very great warrior, and also Saṃdhava, Somadatta, and Bhūriśravas himself.
तथा पूर्वगतानन्यान्स्वर्गं पार्थिवसत्तमान् ।
अस्मद्वाक्यात्परिष्वज्य पृच्छेथास्त्वमनामयम् ॥४५॥
45. tathā pūrvagatānanyānsvargaṁ pārthivasattamān ,
asmadvākyātpariṣvajya pṛcchethāstvamanāmayam.
45. tathā pūrvagatān anyān svargam pārthivasattamān
asmat vākyāt pariṣvajya pṛcchethāḥ tvam anāmayam
45. tathā tvam asmat vākyāt svargam pūrvagatān anyān
pārthivasattamān pariṣvajya anāmayam pṛcchethāḥ
45. Likewise, you should embrace those other excellent kings who have gone to heaven and, by our command, inquire about their well-being.
इत्येवमुक्त्वा राजानं भग्नसक्थमचेतसम् ।
अश्वत्थामा समुद्वीक्ष्य पुनर्वचनमब्रवीत् ॥४६॥
46. ityevamuktvā rājānaṁ bhagnasakthamacetasam ,
aśvatthāmā samudvīkṣya punarvacanamabravīt.
46. iti evam uktvā rājānam bhagnasaktham acetasam
aśvatthāmā samudvīkṣya punaḥ vacanam abravīt
46. aśvatthāmā iti evam bhagnasaktham acetasam
rājānam uktvā samudvīkṣya punaḥ vacanam abravīt
46. Having thus spoken to the king, who lay unconscious with his thighs broken, Aśvatthāman looked at him and spoke again.
दुर्योधन जीवसि चेद्वाचं श्रोत्रसुखां शृणु ।
सप्त पाण्डवतः शेषा धार्तराष्ट्रास्त्रयो वयम् ॥४७॥
47. duryodhana jīvasi cedvācaṁ śrotrasukhāṁ śṛṇu ,
sapta pāṇḍavataḥ śeṣā dhārtarāṣṭrāstrayo vayam.
47. duryodhana jīvasi cet vācam śrotrasukhām śṛṇu
sapta pāṇḍavataḥ śeṣāḥ dhārtarāṣṭrāḥ trayaḥ vayam
47. duryodhana cet jīvasi śrotrasukhām vācam śṛṇu
sapta pāṇḍavataḥ śeṣāḥ vayam dhārtarāṣṭrāḥ trayaḥ
47. O Duryodhana, if you are still alive, listen to these words that are pleasing to the ear: seven from the Pāṇḍava side remain, and we Dhārtarāṣṭras are three.
ते चैव भ्रातरः पञ्च वासुदेवोऽथ सात्यकिः ।
अहं च कृतवर्मा च कृपः शारद्वतस्तथा ॥४८॥
48. te caiva bhrātaraḥ pañca vāsudevo'tha sātyakiḥ ,
ahaṁ ca kṛtavarmā ca kṛpaḥ śāradvatastathā.
48. te ca eva bhrātaraḥ pañca vāsudevaḥ atha sātyakiḥ
aham ca kṛtavarmā ca kṛpaḥ śāradvataḥ tathā
48. te pañca bhrātaraḥ ca eva vāsudevaḥ atha sātyakiḥ
aham ca kṛtavarmā ca kṛpaḥ tathā śāradvataḥ
48. And those five brothers (the Pāṇḍavas), along with Vāsudeva (Kṛṣṇa) and Sātyaki, (are the seven from the Pāṇḍava side who remain). And I, Kṛtavarmā, and Kṛpa, the son of Śaradvat, (are we three).
द्रौपदेया हताः सर्वे धृष्टद्युम्नस्य चात्मजाः ।
पाञ्चाला निहताः सर्वे मत्स्यशेषं च भारत ॥४९॥
49. draupadeyā hatāḥ sarve dhṛṣṭadyumnasya cātmajāḥ ,
pāñcālā nihatāḥ sarve matsyaśeṣaṁ ca bhārata.
49. draupadeyāḥ hatāḥ sarve dhṛṣṭadyumnasya ca ātmajāḥ
pāñcālāḥ nihatāḥ sarve matsyaseṣam ca bhārata
49. bhārata draupadeyāḥ sarve hatāḥ dhṛṣṭadyumnasya
ca ātmajāḥ sarve pāñcālāḥ nihatāḥ ca matsyaseṣam
49. All the sons of Draupadī have been slain, and also the children of Dhṛṣṭadyumna. All the Pāñcālas have been annihilated, O (descendant of) Bhārata (Duryodhana), with only a remnant of the Matsyas remaining.
कृते प्रतिकृतं पश्य हतपुत्रा हि पाण्डवाः ।
सौप्तिके शिबिरं तेषां हतं सनरवाहनम् ॥५०॥
50. kṛte pratikṛtaṁ paśya hataputrā hi pāṇḍavāḥ ,
sauptike śibiraṁ teṣāṁ hataṁ sanaravāhanam.
50. kṛte pratikṛtam paśya hataputrāḥ hi pāṇḍavāḥ
sauptike śibiram teṣām hatam sanaravāhanam
50. pāṇḍavāḥ hi hataputrāḥ kṛte pratikṛtam paśya.
sauptike teṣām śibiram sanaravāhanam hatam
50. See the retaliation for their actions! Indeed, the Pāṇḍavas have had their sons slain. Their camp, including men and vehicles, was destroyed in the night attack.
मया च पापकर्मासौ धृष्टद्युम्नो महीपते ।
प्रविश्य शिबिरं रात्रौ पशुमारेण मारितः ॥५१॥
51. mayā ca pāpakarmāsau dhṛṣṭadyumno mahīpate ,
praviśya śibiraṁ rātrau paśumāreṇa māritaḥ.
51. mayā ca pāpakarmā asau dhṛṣṭadyumnaḥ mahīpate
praviśya śibiram rātrau paśumareṇa māritaḥ
51. mahīpate,
ca mayā rātrau śibiram praviśya asau pāpakarmā dhṛṣṭadyumnaḥ paśumareṇa māritaḥ
51. And, O king, I entered their camp at night and killed that evil-doer Dhṛṣṭadyumna as if he were an animal.
दुर्योधनस्तु तां वाचं निशम्य मनसः प्रियाम् ।
प्रतिलभ्य पुनश्चेत इदं वचनमब्रवीत् ॥५२॥
52. duryodhanastu tāṁ vācaṁ niśamya manasaḥ priyām ,
pratilabhya punaśceta idaṁ vacanamabravīt.
52. duryodhanaḥ tu tām vācam niśamya manasaḥ priyām
pratilabhya punaḥ cetaḥ idam vacanam abravīt
52. duryodhanaḥ tu manasaḥ priyām tām vācam niśamya
punaḥ cetaḥ pratilabhya idam vacanam abravīt
52. But Duryodhana, having heard those words that were pleasing to his mind, and having regained his consciousness, spoke these words.
न मेऽकरोत्तद्गाङ्गेयो न कर्णो न च ते पिता ।
यत्त्वया कृपभोजाभ्यां सहितेनाद्य मे कृतम् ॥५३॥
53. na me'karottadgāṅgeyo na karṇo na ca te pitā ,
yattvayā kṛpabhojābhyāṁ sahitenādya me kṛtam.
53. na me akarot tat gāṅgeyaḥ na karṇaḥ na ca te pitā
yat tvayā kṛpabhojābhyām sahitena adya me kṛtam
53. gāṅgeyaḥ na,
karṇaḥ na,
ca te pitā na tat me akarot.
yat tvayā kṛpabhojābhyām sahitena adya me kṛtam
53. Neither Gaṅgeya (Bhīṣma), nor Karṇa, nor your father did for me what you, accompanied by Kṛpa and Bhoja, have done for me today.
स चेत्सेनापतिः क्षुद्रो हतः सार्धं शिखण्डिना ।
तेन मन्ये मघवता सममात्मानमद्य वै ॥५४॥
54. sa cetsenāpatiḥ kṣudro hataḥ sārdhaṁ śikhaṇḍinā ,
tena manye maghavatā samamātmānamadya vai.
54. sa cet senāpatiḥ kṣudraḥ hataḥ sārdham śikhaṇḍinā
tena manye maghavatā samam ātmānam adya vai
54. saḥ kṣudraḥ senāpatiḥ śikhaṇḍinā sārdham hataḥ
cet tena adya vai ātmānam maghavatā samam manye
54. If that contemptible commander has been killed along with Śikhaṇḍin, then today I certainly consider myself (ātman) equal to Indra (Maghavat).
स्वस्ति प्राप्नुत भद्रं वः स्वर्गे नः संगमः पुनः ।
इत्येवमुक्त्वा तूष्णीं स कुरुराजो महामनाः ।
प्राणानुदसृजद्वीरः सुहृदां शोकमादधत् ॥५५॥
55. svasti prāpnuta bhadraṁ vaḥ svarge naḥ saṁgamaḥ punaḥ ,
ityevamuktvā tūṣṇīṁ sa kururājo mahāmanāḥ ,
prāṇānudasṛjadvīraḥ suhṛdāṁ śokamādadhat.
55. svasti prāpnuta bhadram vaḥ svarge
naḥ saṅgamaḥ punaḥ iti evam uktvā
tūṣṇīm saḥ kururājaḥ mahāmanāḥ prāṇān
udasṛjat vīraḥ suhṛdām śokam ādadhat
55. vaḥ svasti prāpnuta,
bhadram (ca astu).
punaḥ naḥ svarge saṅgamaḥ (bhavatu).
iti evam uktvā,
saḥ mahāmanāḥ kururājaḥ tūṣṇīm (abhūt).
vīraḥ suhṛdām śokam ādadhat (san) prāṇān udasṛjat
55. "May you attain well-being; good fortune be upon you. In heaven (svarga), we shall meet again." Having spoken thus, that great-souled king of the Kurus fell silent. The hero then gave up his life-breaths (prāṇa), casting sorrow upon his friends.
तथेति ते परिष्वक्ताः परिष्वज्य च तं नृपम् ।
पुनः पुनः प्रेक्षमाणाः स्वकानारुरुहू रथान् ॥५६॥
56. tatheti te pariṣvaktāḥ pariṣvajya ca taṁ nṛpam ,
punaḥ punaḥ prekṣamāṇāḥ svakānāruruhū rathān.
56. tathā iti te pariṣvaktāḥ pariṣvajya ca tam nṛpam
punaḥ punaḥ prekṣamāṇāḥ svakān āruruhuḥ rathān
56. te tathā iti (uktvā) pariṣvaktāḥ (santaḥ),
ca tam nṛpam pariṣvajya,
punaḥ punaḥ prekṣamāṇāḥ (santaḥ),
svakān rathān āruruhuḥ
56. "So be it!" they said, having been embraced by him. And having embraced that king in return, they mounted their own chariots, repeatedly looking back (at him).
इत्येवं तव पुत्रस्य निशम्य करुणां गिरम् ।
प्रत्यूषकाले शोकार्तः प्राधावं नगरं प्रति ॥५७॥
57. ityevaṁ tava putrasya niśamya karuṇāṁ giram ,
pratyūṣakāle śokārtaḥ prādhāvaṁ nagaraṁ prati.
57. iti evam tava putrasya niśamya karuṇām giram
pratyūṣakāle śokārtaḥ prādhāvam nagaram prati

57. Having heard such pitiful words of your son, I, distressed by grief, ran towards the city at dawn.
तव पुत्रे गते स्वर्गं शोकार्तस्य ममानघ ।
ऋषिदत्तं प्रनष्टं तद्दिव्यदर्शित्वमद्य वै ॥५८॥
58. tava putre gate svargaṁ śokārtasya mamānagha ,

58. tava putre gate svargam śokārtasya mama anagha
ṛṣidattam pranaṣṭam tat divyadarśitvam adya vai

58. Oh sinless one, with your son (Duryodhana) having gone to heaven, for me, afflicted by sorrow, that divine vision, granted by the sage, has indeed been lost today.
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
इति श्रुत्वा स नृपतिः पुत्रज्ञातिवधं तदा ।
निःश्वस्य दीर्घमुष्णं च ततश्चिन्तापरोऽभवत् ॥५९॥
59. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
iti śrutvā sa nṛpatiḥ putrajñātivadhaṁ tadā ,
niḥśvasya dīrghamuṣṇaṁ ca tataścintāparo'bhavat.

tadā niḥśvasya dīrgham uṣṇam ca tataḥ cintāparaḥ abhavat

59. Vaiśampāyana said: Having heard this report about the slaughter of his sons and kinsmen, that king (Dhritarashtra) at that time sighed deeply and warmly, and then became engrossed in anxiety.
