भीमसेन उवाच ।
यथा यथैव शान्तिः स्यात्कुरूणां मधुसूदन ।
तथा तथैव भाषेथा मा स्म युद्धेन भीषयेः ॥१॥
1. bhīmasena uvāca ,
yathā yathaiva śāntiḥ syātkurūṇāṁ madhusūdana ,
tathā tathaiva bhāṣethā mā sma yuddhena bhīṣayeḥ.

1. Bhīmasena said: "O Madhusūdana, whatever way peace may be established among the Kurus, speak precisely in that manner, and do not threaten them with war."
अमर्षी नित्यसंरब्धः श्रेयोद्वेषी महामनाः ।
नोग्रं दुर्योधनो वाच्यः साम्नैवैनं समाचरेः ॥२॥
2. amarṣī nityasaṁrabdhaḥ śreyodveṣī mahāmanāḥ ,
nograṁ duryodhano vācyaḥ sāmnaivainaṁ samācareḥ.
2. amarṣī nitya-saṃrabdhaḥ śreyaḥ-dveṣī mahā-manāḥ na
ugram duryodhanaḥ vācyaḥ sāmnā eva enam samācareḥ
2. Duryodhana is intolerant, perpetually furious, hostile to what is beneficial, and despite his great self-conceit, he should not be addressed harshly. Rather, you should treat him with conciliation.
प्रकृत्या पापसत्त्वश्च तुल्यचेताश्च दस्युभिः ।
ऐश्वर्यमदमत्तश्च कृतवैरश्च पाण्डवैः ॥३॥
3. prakṛtyā pāpasattvaśca tulyacetāśca dasyubhiḥ ,
aiśvaryamadamattaśca kṛtavairaśca pāṇḍavaiḥ.
3. prakṛtyā pāpa-sattvaḥ ca tulya-cetāḥ ca dasyubhiḥ
aiśvarya-mada-mattaḥ ca kṛta-vairaḥ ca pāṇḍavaiḥ
3. By his very nature (prakṛti), he is wicked-minded, and his disposition is like that of robbers. He is intoxicated by the arrogance of power and has made enemies of the Pāṇḍavas.
अदीर्घदर्शी निष्ठूरी क्षेप्ता क्रूरपराक्रमः ।
दीर्घमन्युरनेयश्च पापात्मा निकृतिप्रियः ॥४॥
4. adīrghadarśī niṣṭhūrī kṣeptā krūraparākramaḥ ,
dīrghamanyuraneyaśca pāpātmā nikṛtipriyaḥ.
4. adīrgha-darśī niṣṭhūrī kṣeptā krūra-parākramaḥ
dīrgha-manyuḥ aneyaḥ ca pāpa-ātmā nikṛti-priyaḥ
4. He is short-sighted, cruel, a slanderer, and terrible in his might. He harbors long-standing resentment, is uncontrollable, evil-souled, and fond of treachery.
म्रियेतापि न भज्येत नैव जह्यात्स्वकं मतम् ।
तादृशेन शमं कृष्ण मन्ये परमदुष्करम् ॥५॥
5. mriyetāpi na bhajyeta naiva jahyātsvakaṁ matam ,
tādṛśena śamaṁ kṛṣṇa manye paramaduṣkaram.
5. mriyeta api na bhajyeta na eva jahyāt svakam
matam tādṛśena śamam kṛṣṇa manye paramaduṣkaram
5. Even if he were to die, he would not be broken, nor would he ever abandon his own conviction. For such a person, O Kṛṣṇa, I believe it is extremely difficult to achieve tranquility (śama).
सुहृदामप्यवाचीनस्त्यक्तधर्मः प्रियानृतः ।
प्रतिहन्त्येव सुहृदां वाचश्चैव मनांसि च ॥६॥
6. suhṛdāmapyavācīnastyaktadharmaḥ priyānṛtaḥ ,
pratihantyeva suhṛdāṁ vācaścaiva manāṁsi ca.
6. suhṛdām api avācīnaḥ tyaktadharmaḥ priyānṛtaḥ
pratihanti eva suhṛdām vācaḥ ca eva manāṃsi ca
6. Even one who is disrespectful towards friends, who has abandoned his natural law (dharma), and who is fond of lies, certainly obstructs both the words and the minds of his friends.
स मन्युवशमापन्नः स्वभावं दुष्टमास्थितः ।
स्वभावात्पापमन्वेति तृणैस्तुन्न इवोरगः ॥७॥
7. sa manyuvaśamāpannaḥ svabhāvaṁ duṣṭamāsthitaḥ ,
svabhāvātpāpamanveti tṛṇaistunna ivoragaḥ.
7. sa manyuvaśam āpannaḥ svabhāvam duṣṭam āsthitaḥ
svabhāvāt pāpam anveti tṛṇaiḥ tunnaḥ iva uragaḥ
7. He, having fallen under the influence of anger and embraced a corrupt intrinsic nature (svabhāva), then pursues wickedness (pāpa) from that very nature, just like a snake that has been pricked by blades of grass.
दुर्योधनो हि यत्सेनः सर्वथा विदितस्तव ।
यच्छीलो यत्स्वभावश्च यद्बलो यत्पराक्रमः ॥८॥
8. duryodhano hi yatsenaḥ sarvathā viditastava ,
yacchīlo yatsvabhāvaśca yadbalo yatparākramaḥ.
8. duryodhanaḥ hi yatsenaḥ sarvathā viditaḥ tava
yacchīlaḥ yatsvabhāvaḥ ca yadbalaḥ yatparākramaḥ
8. Indeed, Duryodhana—whose army, character, intrinsic nature (svabhāva), strength, and prowess are all—is completely known to you.
पुरा प्रसन्नाः कुरवः सहपुत्रास्तथा वयम् ।
इन्द्रज्येष्ठा इवाभूम मोदमानाः सबान्धवाः ॥९॥
9. purā prasannāḥ kuravaḥ sahaputrāstathā vayam ,
indrajyeṣṭhā ivābhūma modamānāḥ sabāndhavāḥ.
9. purā prasannāḥ kuravaḥ sahaputrāḥ tathā vayam
indrajyeṣṭhāḥ iva abhūma modamānāḥ sabāndhavāḥ
9. In the past, the Kurus along with their sons, and we ourselves, were pleased and rejoiced with our relatives, just like those who have Indra as their chief.
दुर्योधनस्य क्रोधेन भारता मधुसूदन ।
धक्ष्यन्ते शिशिरापाये वनानीव हुताशनैः ॥१०॥
10. duryodhanasya krodhena bhāratā madhusūdana ,
dhakṣyante śiśirāpāye vanānīva hutāśanaiḥ.
10. duryodhanasya krodhena bhārata madhusūdana
dhakṣyante śiśirāpāye vanāni iva hutāśanaiḥ
10. O Bhārata, O slayer of Madhu (Madhusūdana), by Duryodhana's wrath, they will be consumed, just like forests are consumed by fires at the end of winter.
अष्टादशेमे राजानः प्रख्याता मधुसूदन ।
ये समुच्चिच्छिदुर्ज्ञातीन्सुहृदश्च सबान्धवान् ॥११॥
11. aṣṭādaśeme rājānaḥ prakhyātā madhusūdana ,
ye samuccicchidurjñātīnsuhṛdaśca sabāndhavān.
11. aṣṭādaśa ime rājānaḥ prakhyātāḥ madhusūdana ye
samuccicchiduḥ jñātīn suhṛdaḥ ca sabāndhavān
11. O slayer of Madhu (Madhusūdana), these eighteen famous kings utterly destroyed their kinsmen, friends, and other relatives.
असुराणां समृद्धानां ज्वलतामिव तेजसा ।
पर्यायकाले धर्मस्य प्राप्ते बलिरजायत ॥१२॥
12. asurāṇāṁ samṛddhānāṁ jvalatāmiva tejasā ,
paryāyakāle dharmasya prāpte balirajāyata.
12. asurāṇām samṛddhānām jvalatām iva tejasā
paryāyakāle dharmasya prāpte baliḥ ajāyata
12. Bali was born when the opportune time for (dharma) arrived, like the thriving Asuras who shine forth with their power.
हैहयानामुदावर्तो नीपानां जनमेजयः ।
बहुलस्तालजङ्घानां कृमीणामुद्धतो वसुः ॥१३॥
13. haihayānāmudāvarto nīpānāṁ janamejayaḥ ,
bahulastālajaṅghānāṁ kṛmīṇāmuddhato vasuḥ.
13. haihayānām udāvartaḥ nīpānām janamejayaḥ
bahulaḥ tālajaṅghānām kṛmīṇām uddhataḥ vasuḥ
13. Udāvarta was the leader of the Haihayas, Janamejaya of the Nīpas, Bahula of the Tālajaṅghas, and the prominent Vasu of the Kṛmīs.
अजबिन्दुः सुवीराणां सुराष्ट्राणां कुशर्द्धिकः ।
अर्कजश्च बलीहानां चीनानां धौतमूलकः ॥१४॥
14. ajabinduḥ suvīrāṇāṁ surāṣṭrāṇāṁ kuśarddhikaḥ ,
arkajaśca balīhānāṁ cīnānāṁ dhautamūlakaḥ.
14. ajabinduḥ suvīrāṇām surāṣṭrāṇām kuśarddhikaḥ
arkajaḥ ca balīhānām cīnānām dhautamūlakaḥ
14. Ajabindu was the leader of the Suvīras, Kuśarddhika of the Surāṣṭras, Arkaja of the Balīhas, and Dhautamūlaka of the Cīnas.
हयग्रीवो विदेहानां वरप्रश्च महौजसाम् ।
बाहुः सुन्दरवेगानां दीप्ताक्षाणां पुरूरवाः ॥१५॥
15. hayagrīvo videhānāṁ varapraśca mahaujasām ,
bāhuḥ sundaravegānāṁ dīptākṣāṇāṁ purūravāḥ.
15. hayagrīvaḥ videhānām varapraḥ ca mahaujasām
bāhuḥ sundaravegānām dīptākṣāṇām purūravāḥ
15. Hayagrīva was the leader of the Videhas, Varapra of the Mahaujasas, Bāhu of the Sundaravegas, and Purūravāḥ of the Dīptākṣas.
सहजश्चेदिमत्स्यानां प्रचेतानां बृहद्बलः ।
धारणश्चेन्द्रवत्सानां मुकुटानां विगाहनः ॥१६॥
16. sahajaścedimatsyānāṁ pracetānāṁ bṛhadbalaḥ ,
dhāraṇaścendravatsānāṁ mukuṭānāṁ vigāhanaḥ.
16. sahajaḥ ca cedimatsyānām pracetānām bṛhadbalaḥ
dhāraṇaḥ ca indravatsānām mukuṭānām vigāhanaḥ
16. Sahaja was the leader of the Cedi-Matsyas, Bṛhadbala of the Pracetas, Dhāraṇa of the Indravatsas, and Vigāhana of the Mukuṭas.
शमश्च नन्दिवेगानामित्येते कुलपांसनाः ।
युगान्ते कृष्ण संभूताः कुलेषु पुरुषाधमाः ॥१७॥
17. śamaśca nandivegānāmityete kulapāṁsanāḥ ,
yugānte kṛṣṇa saṁbhūtāḥ kuleṣu puruṣādhamāḥ.
17. śamaḥ ca nandivegānām iti ete kulapāṃsanāḥ
yugānte kṛṣṇa saṃbhūtāḥ kuleṣu puruṣādhamāḥ
17. O Krishna, these individuals, such as Śama and Nandivega, are disgracers of their families, the lowest among men, born into these lineages as if at the culmination of an age (yuga).
अप्ययं नः कुरूणां स्याद्युगान्ते कालसंभृतः ।
दुर्योधनः कुलाङ्गारो जघन्यः पापपूरुषः ॥१८॥
18. apyayaṁ naḥ kurūṇāṁ syādyugānte kālasaṁbhṛtaḥ ,
duryodhanaḥ kulāṅgāro jaghanyaḥ pāpapūruṣaḥ.
18. api ayam naḥ kurūṇām syāt yugānte kālasaṃbhṛtaḥ
duryodhanaḥ kulāṅgāraḥ jaghanyaḥ pāpapūruṣaḥ
18. Indeed, this Duryodhana of our Kuru family is like a burning charcoal to the lineage, the lowest and most sinful man, brought forth by time as if at the very end of an age (yuga).
तस्मान्मृदु शनैरेनं ब्रूया धर्मार्थसंहितम् ।
कामानुबन्धबहुलं नोग्रमुग्रपराक्रमम् ॥१९॥
19. tasmānmṛdu śanairenaṁ brūyā dharmārthasaṁhitam ,
kāmānubandhabahulaṁ nogramugraparākramam.
19. tasmāt mṛdu śanaiḥ enam brūyāt dharmārthasaṃhitam
kāmānubandhabahulam na ugram ugraparākramam
19. Therefore, one should speak to him gently and slowly, with words that are conducive to natural law (dharma) and material prosperity (artha), and that incorporate abundant elements appealing to desire (kāma), but not with harshness or a show of formidable power.
अपि दुर्योधनं कृष्ण सर्वे वयमधश्चराः ।
नीचैर्भूत्वानुयास्यामो मा स्म नो भरता नशन् ॥२०॥
20. api duryodhanaṁ kṛṣṇa sarve vayamadhaścarāḥ ,
nīcairbhūtvānuyāsyāmo mā sma no bharatā naśan.
20. api duryodhanam kṛṣṇa sarve vayam adhaścarāḥ nīcaiḥ
bhūtvā anuyāsyāmaḥ mā sma naḥ bharatāḥ naśan
20. O Krishna, even we, all of us, will become subordinates and humbly follow Duryodhana, lest our Bharata lineage be destroyed.
अप्युदासीनवृत्तिः स्याद्यथा नः कुरुभिः सह ।
वासुदेव तथा कार्यं न कुरूननयः स्पृशेत् ॥२१॥
21. apyudāsīnavṛttiḥ syādyathā naḥ kurubhiḥ saha ,
vāsudeva tathā kāryaṁ na kurūnanayaḥ spṛśet.
21. api udāsīnavṛttiḥ syāt yathā naḥ kurubhiḥ saha
vāsudeva tathā kāryam na kurūn anayaḥ spṛśet
21. O Vasudeva, even if we were to adopt a neutral attitude (udāsīna-vṛtti) towards the Kurus, action should be taken in such a way that no misfortune (anaya) touches the Kurus.
वाच्यः पितामहो वृद्धो ये च कृष्ण सभासदः ।
भ्रातॄणामस्तु सौभ्रात्रं धार्तराष्ट्रः प्रशाम्यताम् ॥२२॥
22. vācyaḥ pitāmaho vṛddho ye ca kṛṣṇa sabhāsadaḥ ,
bhrātṝṇāmastu saubhrātraṁ dhārtarāṣṭraḥ praśāmyatām.
22. vācyaḥ pitāmahaḥ vṛddhaḥ ye ca kṛṣṇa sabhāsadaḥ
bhrātṝṇām astu saubhrātram dhārtarāṣṭraḥ praśāmyatām
22. O Krishna, the aged grandfather (Bhishma) should be spoken to, as should those who are members of the assembly. Let there be brotherhood (saubhrātra) among the brothers, and let Dhritarashtra be appeased.
अहमेतद्ब्रवीम्येवं राजा चैव प्रशंसति ।
अर्जुनो नैव युद्धार्थी भूयसी हि दयार्जुने ॥२३॥
23. ahametadbravīmyevaṁ rājā caiva praśaṁsati ,
arjuno naiva yuddhārthī bhūyasī hi dayārjune.
23. aham etat bravīmi evam rājā ca eva praśaṃsati
arjunaḥ na eva yuddhārthī bhūyasī hi dayā arjune
23. I state this, and the king (Yudhishthira) also approves. Arjuna is certainly not desirous of war, for indeed, great compassion (dayā) resides in Arjuna.
