इत्युक्तः स तदा तूष्णीमभूद्वायुस्ततोऽब्रवीत् ।
शृणु राजन्नगस्त्यस्य माहात्म्यं ब्राह्मणस्य ह ॥१॥
1. bhīṣma uvāca ,
ityuktaḥ sa tadā tūṣṇīmabhūdvāyustato'bravīt ,
śṛṇu rājannagastyasya māhātmyaṁ brāhmaṇasya ha.

1. Bhishma said: Having been spoken to in this manner, he then became silent. Then Vayu spoke: "O King, listen to the greatness of the brahmin Agastya."
असुरैर्निर्जिता देवा निरुत्साहाश्च ते कृताः ।
यज्ञाश्चैषां हृताः सर्वे पितृभ्यश्च स्वधा तथा ॥२॥
2. asurairnirjitā devā nirutsāhāśca te kṛtāḥ ,
yajñāścaiṣāṁ hṛtāḥ sarve pitṛbhyaśca svadhā tathā.
2. asuraiḥ nirjitāḥ devāḥ nirutsāhāḥ ca te kṛtāḥ yajñāḥ
ca eṣām hṛtāḥ sarve pitṛbhyaḥ ca svadhā tathā
2. The gods were defeated by the asuras and rendered devoid of enthusiasm. All their Vedic rituals (yajña) were seized, as were the svadhā offerings intended for the ancestors.
कर्मेज्या मानवानां च दानवैर्हैहयर्षभ ।
भ्रष्टैश्वर्यास्ततो देवाश्चेरुः पृथ्वीमिति श्रुतिः ॥३॥
3. karmejyā mānavānāṁ ca dānavairhaihayarṣabha ,
bhraṣṭaiśvaryāstato devāśceruḥ pṛthvīmiti śrutiḥ.
3. karmejyā mānavānām ca dānavaiḥ haihayarṣabha
bhraṣṭaiśvaryāḥ tataḥ devāḥ ceruḥ pṛthvīm iti śrutiḥ
3. O best of Haihayas, the Dānavas also seized the Vedic rituals (karma-ijyā) of humans. Therefore, the gods, having lost their sovereignty, wandered the earth; such is the sacred tradition (śruti).
ततः कदाचित्ते राजन्दीप्तमादित्यवर्चसम् ।
ददृशुस्तेजसा युक्तमगस्त्यं विपुलव्रतम् ॥४॥
4. tataḥ kadācitte rājandīptamādityavarcasam ,
dadṛśustejasā yuktamagastyaṁ vipulavratam.
4. tataḥ kadācit te rājan dīptam ādityavarcasam
dadṛśuḥ tejasā yuktam agastyam vipulavratam
4. Then, O king, one day they (the gods) beheld Agastya, who was radiant with the splendor of the sun and endowed with mighty vows.
अभिवाद्य च तं देवा दृष्ट्वा च यशसा वृतम् ।
इदमूचुर्महात्मानं वाक्यं काले जनाधिप ॥५॥
5. abhivādya ca taṁ devā dṛṣṭvā ca yaśasā vṛtam ,
idamūcurmahātmānaṁ vākyaṁ kāle janādhipa.
5. abhivādya ca tam devāḥ dṛṣṭvā ca yaśasā vṛtam
idam ūcuḥ mahātmānam vākyam kāle janādhipa
5. And having saluted him, O lord of men, the gods, seeing him surrounded by glory, spoke these timely words to the great soul (mahātman).
दानवैर्युधि भग्नाः स्म तथैश्वर्याच्च भ्रंशिताः ।
तदस्मान्नो भयात्तीव्रात्त्राहि त्वं मुनिपुंगव ॥६॥
6. dānavairyudhi bhagnāḥ sma tathaiśvaryācca bhraṁśitāḥ ,
tadasmānno bhayāttīvrāttrāhi tvaṁ munipuṁgava.
6. dānavaiḥ yudhi bhagnāḥ sma tathā aiśvaryāt ca bhraṃśitāḥ
tat asmān naḥ bhayāt tīvrāt trāhi tvam munipuṅgava
6. munipuṅgava dānavaiḥ yudhi bhagnāḥ sma tathā ca aiśvaryāt
bhraṃśitāḥ tat tvam asmān naḥ tīvrāt bhayāt trāhi
6. We were defeated in battle by the demons and consequently deprived of our sovereignty. Therefore, O foremost among sages, please protect us from this intense fear.
इत्युक्तः स तदा देवैरगस्त्यः कुपितोऽभवत् ।
प्रजज्वाल च तेजस्वी कालाग्निरिव संक्षये ॥७॥
7. ityuktaḥ sa tadā devairagastyaḥ kupito'bhavat ,
prajajvāla ca tejasvī kālāgniriva saṁkṣaye.
7. iti uktaḥ saḥ tadā devaiḥ agastyaḥ kupitaḥ abhavat
prajajvāla ca tejasvī kālāgniḥ iva saṃkṣaye
7. devaiḥ iti uktaḥ saḥ agastyaḥ tadā kupitaḥ abhavat
ca tejasvī saṃkṣaye kālāgniḥ iva prajajvāla
7. When thus addressed by the gods, (muni) Agastya became enraged. Resplendent, he blazed forth like the fire of time (kālāgni) at the cosmic dissolution.
तेन दीप्तांशुजालेन निर्दग्धा दानवास्तदा ।
अन्तरिक्षान्महाराज न्यपतन्त सहस्रशः ॥८॥
8. tena dīptāṁśujālena nirdagdhā dānavāstadā ,
antarikṣānmahārāja nyapatanta sahasraśaḥ.
8. tena dīptāṃśujālena nirdagdhāḥ dānavāḥ tadā
antarikṣāt mahārāja nyapatanta sahasraśaḥ
8. mahārāja tadā tena dīptāṃśujālena dānavāḥ

8. O great king, by that blazing network of rays, the demons were incinerated then and fell by thousands from the sky.
दह्यमानास्तु ते दैत्यास्तस्यागस्त्यस्य तेजसा ।
उभौ लोकौ परित्यज्य ययुः काष्ठां स्म दक्षिणाम् ॥९॥
9. dahyamānāstu te daityāstasyāgastyasya tejasā ,
ubhau lokau parityajya yayuḥ kāṣṭhāṁ sma dakṣiṇām.
9. dahyamānāḥ tu te daityāḥ tasya agastyasya tejasā
ubhau lokau parityajya yayuḥ kāṣṭhāṃ sma dakṣiṇām
9. tu tasyāgastyaśya tejasā dahyamānāḥ te daityāḥ
ubhau lokau parityajya dakṣiṇām kāṣṭhāṃ yayuḥ sma
9. But those demons, being consumed by the fiery energy (tejas) of (muni) Agastya, abandoned both worlds and went to the southern direction.
बलिस्तु यजते यज्ञमश्वमेधं महीं गतः ।
येऽन्ये स्वस्था महीस्थाश्च ते न दग्धा महासुराः ॥१०॥
10. balistu yajate yajñamaśvamedhaṁ mahīṁ gataḥ ,
ye'nye svasthā mahīsthāśca te na dagdhā mahāsurāḥ.
10. baliḥ tu yajate yajñam aśvamedham mahīm gataḥ ye
anye svasthāḥ mahīsthāḥ ca te na dagdhāḥ mahāsurāḥ
10. baliḥ tu mahīm gataḥ aśvamedham yajñam yajate ye
anye svasthāḥ ca mahīsthāḥ te mahāsurāḥ na dagdhāḥ
10. King Bali, having descended to earth, performed the great horse (aśvamedha) Vedic ritual (yajña). However, those other great asuras who were still on earth and well-situated were not destroyed.
ततो लोकाः पुनः प्राप्ताः सुरैः शान्तं च तद्रजः ।
अथैनमब्रुवन्देवा भूमिष्ठानसुराञ्जहि ॥११॥
11. tato lokāḥ punaḥ prāptāḥ suraiḥ śāntaṁ ca tadrajaḥ ,
athainamabruvandevā bhūmiṣṭhānasurāñjahi.
11. tataḥ lokāḥ punaḥ prāptāḥ suraiḥ śāntam ca tat
rajaḥ atha enam abruvan devāḥ bhūmiṣṭhān asurān jahi
11. tataḥ lokāḥ suraiḥ punaḥ prāptāḥ ca tat rajaḥ śāntam
atha devāḥ enam abruvan bhūmiṣṭhān asurān jahi
11. Thereafter, the worlds were recovered by the gods, and that turmoil was calmed. Then the gods said to him, "Destroy the asuras who are on the earth!"
इत्युक्त आह देवान्स न शक्नोमि महीगतान् ।
दग्धुं तपो हि क्षीयेन्मे धक्ष्यामीति च पार्थिव ॥१२॥
12. ityukta āha devānsa na śaknomi mahīgatān ,
dagdhuṁ tapo hi kṣīyenme dhakṣyāmīti ca pārthiva.
12. iti uktaḥ āha devān saḥ na śaknomi mahīgatān
dagdhum tapaḥ hi kṣīyet me dhakṣyāmi iti ca pārthiva
12. iti uktaḥ saḥ devān āha (aham) mahīgatān dagdhum na
śaknomi hi me tapas kṣīyet dhakṣyāmi iti ca pārthiva
12. Being thus addressed, he replied to the gods, "I am not able to destroy those who have taken refuge on earth; indeed, my ascetic power (tapas) would diminish if I were to proclaim, 'I will burn them,' O King (pārthiva)."
एवं दग्धा भगवता दानवाः स्वेन तेजसा ।
अगस्त्येन तदा राजंस्तपसा भावितात्मना ॥१३॥
13. evaṁ dagdhā bhagavatā dānavāḥ svena tejasā ,
agastyena tadā rājaṁstapasā bhāvitātmanā.
13. evam dagdhāḥ bhagavatā dānavāḥ svena tejasā
agastyena tadā rājan tapasā bhāvitātmanā
13. rājan tadā evam bhagavatā agastyena bhāvitātmanā
svena tapasā tejasā dānavāḥ dagdhāḥ
13. Thus, O King (rājan), the Dānavas (a class of asuras) were destroyed then by the venerable Agastya, whose self (ātman) was cultivated by ascetic practice (tapas), through his own spiritual energy.
ईदृशश्चाप्यगस्त्यो हि कथितस्ते मयानघ ।
ब्रवीम्यहं ब्रूहि वा त्वमगस्त्यात्क्षत्रियं वरम् ॥१४॥
14. īdṛśaścāpyagastyo hi kathitaste mayānagha ,
bravīmyahaṁ brūhi vā tvamagastyātkṣatriyaṁ varam.
14. īdṛśaḥ ca api agastyaḥ hi kathitaḥ te mayā anagha
bravīmi aham brūhi vā tvam agastyāt kṣatriyam varam
14. अनघ (anagha) मया (mayā) ते (te) ईदृशः (īdṛśaḥ) अगस्त्यः (agastyaḥ) हि (hi) कथितः (kathitaḥ).
अहम् (aham) ब्रवीमि (bravīmi) वा (vā) त्वम् (tvam) अगस्त्यात् (agastyāt) वरम् (varam) क्षत्रियम् (kṣatriyam) ब्रूहि (brūhi).
14. O sinless one (anagha), such an Agastya has indeed been described by me to you. I challenge you: tell me, or I will tell you, who is a warrior (kṣatriya) superior to Agastya.
इत्युक्तः स तदा तूष्णीमभूद्वायुस्ततोऽब्रवीत् ।
शृणु राजन्वसिष्ठस्य मुख्यं कर्म यशस्विनः ॥१५॥
15. ityuktaḥ sa tadā tūṣṇīmabhūdvāyustato'bravīt ,
śṛṇu rājanvasiṣṭhasya mukhyaṁ karma yaśasvinaḥ.
15. iti uktaḥ saḥ tadā tūṣṇīm abhūt vāyuḥ tataḥ abravīt
śṛṇu rājan vasiṣṭhasya mukhyam karma yaśasvinaḥ
15. सः (saḥ) इति (iti) उक्तः (uktaḥ) तदा (tadā) तूष्णीम् (tūṣṇīm) अभूत् (abhūt).
ततः (tataḥ) वायुः (vāyuḥ) अब्रवीत् (abravīt): राजन् (rājan) यशस्विनः (yaśasvinaḥ) वसिष्ठस्य (vasiṣṭhasya) मुख्यम् (mukhyam) कर्म (karma) शृणु (śṛṇu).
15. Thus addressed, he then fell silent. Thereupon, Vāyu spoke: 'Listen, O king, to the principal deed (karma) of the illustrious Vasiṣṭha.'
आदित्याः सत्रमासन्त सरो वै मानसं प्रति ।
वसिष्ठं मनसा गत्वा श्रुत्वा तत्रास्य गोचरम् ॥१६॥
16. ādityāḥ satramāsanta saro vai mānasaṁ prati ,
vasiṣṭhaṁ manasā gatvā śrutvā tatrāsya gocaram.
16. ādityāḥ satram āsanta saraḥ vai mānasam prati
vasiṣṭham manasā gatvā śrutvā tatra asya gocaram
16. आदित्याः (ādityāḥ) मानसम् (mānasam) सरः (saraḥ) प्रति (prati) वै (vai) सत्रम् (satram) आसन्त (āsanta).
मनसा (manasā) वसिष्ठम् (vasiṣṭham) गत्वा (gatvā) तत्र (tatra) अस्य (asya) गोचरम् (gocaram) श्रुत्वा (śrutvā).

16. The Adityas were indeed performing a great Vedic ritual (satra) near Lake Manasa. Having mentally approached Vasiṣṭha and heard of his whereabouts there...
यजमानांस्तु तान्दृष्ट्वा व्यग्रान्दीक्षानुकर्शितान् ।
हन्तुमिच्छन्ति शैलाभाः खलिनो नाम दानवाः ॥१७॥
17. yajamānāṁstu tāndṛṣṭvā vyagrāndīkṣānukarśitān ,
hantumicchanti śailābhāḥ khalino nāma dānavāḥ.
17. yajamānān tu tān dṛṣṭvā vyagrān dīkṣānukarśitān
hantum icchanti śailābhāḥ khalinaḥ nāma dānavāḥ
17. तु (tu) तान् (tān) व्यग्रान् (vyagrān) दीक्षानुकर्शितान् (dīkṣānukarśitān) यजमानान् (yajamānān) दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā),
शैल (śaila) आभाः (ābhāḥ) खलिनः (khalinaḥ) नाम (nāma) दानवाः (dānavāḥ) हन्तुम् (hantum) इच्छन्ति (icchanti).
17. But seeing those patrons of the Vedic ritual (yajamānān), who were distressed and emaciated by their vows (dīkṣā), the Dānavas named Khalinas, resembling mountains, desired to kill them.
अदूरात्तु ततस्तेषां ब्रह्मदत्तवरं सरः ।
हता हता वै ते तत्र जीवन्त्याप्लुत्य दानवाः ॥१८॥
18. adūrāttu tatasteṣāṁ brahmadattavaraṁ saraḥ ,
hatā hatā vai te tatra jīvantyāplutya dānavāḥ.
18. adūrāt tu tataḥ teṣām brahmadattavaram saraḥ
hatā hatā vai te tatra jīvanti āplutya dānavāḥ
18. teṣām adūrāt tu brahmadattavaram saraḥ tatra
te dānavāḥ hatā hatā vai āplutya jīvanti
18. Not far from them was a lake, endowed with a boon by Brahmā. There, the demons, even when repeatedly killed, would revive by plunging into it.
ते प्रगृह्य महाघोरान्पर्वतान्परिघान्द्रुमान् ।
विक्षोभयन्तः सलिलमुत्थिताः शतयोजनम् ॥१९॥
19. te pragṛhya mahāghorānparvatānparighāndrumān ,
vikṣobhayantaḥ salilamutthitāḥ śatayojanam.
19. te pragṛhya mahāghorān parvatān parighān drumān
vikṣobhayantaḥ salilam utthitāḥ śatayojanam
19. te mahāghorān parvatān parighān drumān pragṛhya
śatayojanam salilam vikṣobhayantaḥ utthitāḥ
19. They, having seized extremely fearsome mountains, maces, and trees, rose up, stirring the waters for a hundred yojanas.
अभ्यद्रवन्त देवांस्ते सहस्राणि दशैव ह ।
ततस्तैरर्दिता देवाः शरणं वासवं ययुः ॥२०॥
20. abhyadravanta devāṁste sahasrāṇi daśaiva ha ,
tatastairarditā devāḥ śaraṇaṁ vāsavaṁ yayuḥ.
20. abhyadravanta devān te sahasrāṇi daśa eva ha
tataḥ taiḥ arditāḥ devāḥ śaraṇam vāsavam yayuḥ
20. daśa sahasrāṇi eva ha te devān abhyadravanta
tataḥ taiḥ arditāḥ devāḥ vāsavam śaraṇam yayuḥ
20. Those ten thousand (demons) rushed at the gods. Then, tormented by them, the gods sought refuge with Indra.
स च तैर्व्यथितः शक्रो वसिष्ठं शरणं ययौ ।
ततोऽभयं ददौ तेभ्यो वसिष्ठो भगवानृषिः ॥२१॥
21. sa ca tairvyathitaḥ śakro vasiṣṭhaṁ śaraṇaṁ yayau ,
tato'bhayaṁ dadau tebhyo vasiṣṭho bhagavānṛṣiḥ.
21. sa ca taiḥ vyathitaḥ śakraḥ vasiṣṭham śaraṇam yayau
tataḥ abhayam dadau tebhyaḥ vasiṣṭhaḥ bhagavānṛṣiḥ
21. sa ca śakraḥ taiḥ vyathitaḥ vasiṣṭham śaraṇam yayau
tataḥ bhagavānṛṣiḥ vasiṣṭhaḥ tebhyaḥ abhayam dadau
21. And Indra (śakra), distressed by them, went to Vasiṣṭha for refuge. Then, the venerable sage (ṛṣi) Vasiṣṭha granted them protection.
तथा तान्दुःखिताञ्जानन्नानृशंस्यपरो मुनिः ।
अयत्नेनादहत्सर्वान्खलिनः स्वेन तेजसा ॥२२॥
22. tathā tānduḥkhitāñjānannānṛśaṁsyaparo muniḥ ,
ayatnenādahatsarvānkhalinaḥ svena tejasā.
22. tathā tān duḥkhitān jānan ānṛśaṃsyaparaḥ muniḥ
ayatnena adahat sarvān khalinaḥ svena tejasā
22. tathā muniḥ ānṛśaṃsyaparaḥ tān duḥkhitān jānan
ayatnena svena tejasā sarvān khalinaḥ adahat
22. Thus, knowing them to be distressed, the sage, intent on compassion, effortlessly consumed all the wicked with his own power.
कैलासं प्रस्थितां चापि नदीं गङ्गां महातपाः ।
आनयत्तत्सरो दिव्यं तया भिन्नं च तत्सरः ॥२३॥
23. kailāsaṁ prasthitāṁ cāpi nadīṁ gaṅgāṁ mahātapāḥ ,
ānayattatsaro divyaṁ tayā bhinnaṁ ca tatsaraḥ.
23. kailāsaṃ prasthitāṃ ca api nadīṃ gaṅgāṃ mahātapāḥ
ānayat tat saraḥ divyaṃ tayā bhinnaṃ ca tat saraḥ
23. mahātapāḥ ca api kailāsaṃ prasthitāṃ nadīṃ gaṅgāṃ
tat divyaṃ saraḥ ānayat ca tat saraḥ tayā bhinnaṃ
23. The great ascetic also brought the river Ganga, which was proceeding towards Kailasa, to that divine lake. And that lake was then split by her.
सरो भिन्नं तया नद्या सरयूः सा ततोऽभवत् ।
हताश्च खलिनो यत्र स देशः खलिनोऽभवत् ॥२४॥
24. saro bhinnaṁ tayā nadyā sarayūḥ sā tato'bhavat ,
hatāśca khalino yatra sa deśaḥ khalino'bhavat.
24. saraḥ bhinnaṃ tayā nadyā sarayūḥ sā tataḥ abhavat
hatāḥ ca khalinaḥ yatra saḥ deśaḥ khalinaḥ abhavat
24. tayā nadyā bhinnaṃ saraḥ sā sarayūḥ tataḥ abhavat
ca yatra khalinaḥ hatāḥ saḥ deśaḥ khalinaḥ abhavat
24. That lake, split by that river, thereupon became the Sarayu. And where the wicked were killed, that region became known as Khalina.
एवं सेन्द्रा वसिष्ठेन रक्षितास्त्रिदिवौकसः ।
ब्रह्मदत्तवराश्चैव हता दैत्या महात्मना ॥२५॥
25. evaṁ sendrā vasiṣṭhena rakṣitāstridivaukasaḥ ,
brahmadattavarāścaiva hatā daityā mahātmanā.
25. evaṃ sa-indrāḥ vasiṣṭhena rakṣitāḥ tridivaukasaḥ
brahmadattavarāḥ ca eva hatāḥ daityāḥ mahātmanā
25. evaṃ vasiṣṭhena sa-indrāḥ tridivaukasaḥ rakṣitāḥ
ca eva mahātmanā brahmadattavarāḥ daityāḥ hatāḥ
25. Thus, the dwellers of heaven, including Indra, were protected by Vasiṣṭha. And indeed, the Daityas, who had received boons from (brahma), were killed by the great-souled one.
एतत्कर्म वसिष्ठस्य कथितं ते मयानघ ।
ब्रवीम्यहं ब्रूहि वा त्वं वसिष्ठात्क्षत्रियं वरम् ॥२६॥
26. etatkarma vasiṣṭhasya kathitaṁ te mayānagha ,
bravīmyahaṁ brūhi vā tvaṁ vasiṣṭhātkṣatriyaṁ varam.
26. etat karma vasiṣṭhasya kathitam te mayā anagha
bravīmi aham brūhi vā tvam vasiṣṭhāt kṣatriyam varam
26. anagha mayā te vasiṣṭhasya etat karma kathitam.
aham bravīmi vā tvam vasiṣṭhāt varam kṣatriyam brūhi.
26. O sinless one, this deed of Vasiṣṭha has been recounted to you by me. I assert this, or rather, you tell me if there is any kṣatriya superior to Vasiṣṭha.
