Then, the Lord of the three worlds, pleased upon seeing her action (karma), thereupon revealed his own divine form (ātman) to the maiden.

Indeed, in the past, the Seven Sages, accompanied by Arundhatī, abandoned this highly auspicious and excellent sacred place and went to the Himalayas.

Then, those illustrious and well-disciplined sages, having arrived there, indeed went to gather fruits and roots for their sustenance, so it is said.

As they (the Sages) resided there in the Himalayan forest, striving for their livelihood, a twelve-year-long drought then afflicted them.

And there, those ascetics, having built a hermitage (āśrama), resided. At that time, the blessed Arundhatī also became constantly devoted to austerities (tapas).

Then, having seen Arundhati observing a severe vow, the three-eyed god (Shiva), who was very pleased and a giver of boons, arrived at that moment.

Then, the greatly glorious Mahadeva, assuming a divine form and approaching her, said, "O auspicious one, I desire alms."

Then, Arundhati, who was beautiful to behold, replied to that Brahmin: "O Brahmin, my store of food is depleted. Eat these berries here instead." Then Mahadeva said, "O observer of good vows, please cook these (berries)."

Thus addressed, the glorious Arundhati, desiring to please the Brahmin, placed those berries on the blazing fire and cooked them.

She then listened to divine, delightful, and sacred stories. That terrible twelve-year drought had (already) passed.

While she was neither eating nor cooking, but was listening to auspicious stories, that extremely terrible time, which seemed to pass as quickly as a single day, passed for her.

Then the divine Hara (Śiva) revealed his own true nature. Thereafter, at that time, he spoke to them about her great conduct.

46.
The sages were amazed, having seen Arundhatī, who was unwearied, unchanged in complexion, and enduring hunger and thirst.

47.
Thus, supreme perfection (siddhi) was attained by the pure Arundhatī, just as it was attained by you, O fortunate one, O one with firm vows, for my sake.

48.
Indeed, O auspicious one, an extraordinary offering has been made by you in this observance. And so, being greatly pleased by your discipline (niyama), I give this today.

49.
O auspicious and excellent one, I grant you a special boon - that very boon which was indeed given by the great soul (mahātman) to Arundhati.

50.
And by his grace and your splendor, O auspicious one, I shall again, in due form, declare another boon here.

Whoever, being perfectly composed (dhyāna), resides for one night in a sacred bathing place (tīrtha), he, having bathed, will attain worlds that are difficult to obtain even by abandoning the body.

52.
Having thus spoken, the powerful, thousand-eyed Lord (deva) then proceeded to the sacred Srucāvatī and returned again to heaven (tridivam).

O King (rājaṃs), O best of Bharatas (bharataśreṣṭha), when the thunderbolt-bearer (vajradhara) had departed, a shower of divine, divinely fragrant flowers indeed fell there.

And drums with very loud sounds resounded from all sides. Also, O lord of the people (viśām pate), the wind blew appropriately, bearing a sacred fragrance.

But having abandoned her beautiful body, she became Indra's wife. Having attained that through severe asceticism (tapas), she rejoiced with him, O Acyuta (acyuta).

Vaiśampāyana said: "The semen of the great-souled sage among Brahmins, Bhāradvāja, fell when he saw the wide-eyed Apsaras Ghṛtācī approaching."

But he, the foremost among those who recite sacred texts (japatām varaḥ), took that semen with his hand. He then placed it in a leaf-cup, and there, that beautiful girl was born.

The great sage Bhāradvāja, whose wealth was asceticism (tapodhana), performed all her birth rites (saṃskāra) and then gave her a name.

And with reference to Srucāvatī, the man of righteousness (dharmātmā), then in that assembly of groups of sages, having placed her in the hermitage, went to the Himalayan forest.

There too, having performed ablutions, the magnanimous one, with a well-composed mind (ātman), and having given riches to great Brahmins, the foremost among the Vṛṣṇis then went to the sacred bathing place (tīrtha) of Indra.
