च्यवन उवाच ।
अवश्यं कथनीयं मे तवैतन्नरपुंगव ।
यदर्थं त्वाहमुच्छेत्तुं संप्राप्तो मनुजाधिप ॥१॥
1. cyavana uvāca ,
avaśyaṁ kathanīyaṁ me tavaitannarapuṁgava ,
yadarthaṁ tvāhamucchettuṁ saṁprāpto manujādhipa.

yat artham tvām aham ucchettum samprāptaḥ manujādhipa

1. Cyavana said: 'This must certainly be recounted by me to you, O chief of men. For this very reason, O ruler of humanity, I have arrived to destroy you.'
भृगूणां क्षत्रिया याज्या नित्यमेव जनाधिप ।
ते च भेदं गमिष्यन्ति दैवयुक्तेन हेतुना ॥२॥
2. bhṛgūṇāṁ kṣatriyā yājyā nityameva janādhipa ,
te ca bhedaṁ gamiṣyanti daivayuktena hetunā.
2. bhṛgūṇām kṣatriyāḥ yājyāḥ nityam eva janādhipa
te ca bhedam gamiṣyanti daivayuktena hetunā
2. O ruler of the people, the Kṣatriyas are always to be officiated for by the Bhṛgus. But they (the Bhṛgus) will come to ruin through a divinely ordained cause.
क्षत्रियाश्च भृगून्सर्वान्वधिष्यन्ति नराधिप ।
आ गर्भादनुकृन्तन्तो दैवदण्डनिपीडिताः ॥३॥
3. kṣatriyāśca bhṛgūnsarvānvadhiṣyanti narādhipa ,
ā garbhādanukṛntanto daivadaṇḍanipīḍitāḥ.
3. kṣatriyāḥ ca bhṛgūn sarvān vadhiṣyanti narādhipa
ā garbhāt anukṛntantaḥ daivadaṇḍanipīḍitāḥ
3. O ruler of men, the Kṣatriyas, oppressed by divine retribution, will kill all the Bhṛgus, even cutting them down from the womb.
तत उत्पत्स्यतेऽस्माकं कुले गोत्रविवर्धनः ।
और्वो नाम महातेजा ज्वलनार्कसमद्युतिः ॥४॥
4. tata utpatsyate'smākaṁ kule gotravivardhanaḥ ,
aurvo nāma mahātejā jvalanārkasamadyutiḥ.
4. tataḥ utpatsyate asmākam kule gotravivardhanaḥ
aurvaḥ nāma mahātejāḥ jvalanārkasamadyutiḥ
4. Then, in our lineage, an augmenter of the family, by the name of Aurva, possessing great brilliance and splendor equal to a blazing sun, will be born.
स त्रैलोक्यविनाशाय कोपाग्निं जनयिष्यति ।
महीं सपर्वतवनां यः करिष्यति भस्मसात् ॥५॥
5. sa trailokyavināśāya kopāgniṁ janayiṣyati ,
mahīṁ saparvatavanāṁ yaḥ kariṣyati bhasmasāt.
5. saḥ trailokyavināśāya kopāgnim janayiṣyati
mahīm saparvatavanām yaḥ kariṣyati bhasmasāt
5. He will generate a fire of wrath for the destruction of the three worlds, and he will reduce the earth, along with its mountains and forests, to ashes.
कंचित्कालं तु तं वह्निं स एव शमयिष्यति ।
समुद्रे वडवावक्त्रे प्रक्षिप्य मुनिसत्तमः ॥६॥
6. kaṁcitkālaṁ tu taṁ vahniṁ sa eva śamayiṣyati ,
samudre vaḍavāvaktre prakṣipya munisattamaḥ.
6. kaṃcit kālam tu tam vahniṃ saḥ eva śamayisyati
samudre vaḍavāvaktram prakṣipya munisattamaḥ
6. munisattamaḥ tam vahniṃ samudre vaḍavāvaktram
prakṣipya saḥ eva kaṃcit kālam tu śamayisyati
6. O best among sages (muni), having cast that fire into the mouth of the mare (submarine fire) in the ocean, he himself will extinguish it for some time.
पुत्रं तस्य महाभागमृचीकं भृगुनन्दनम् ।
साक्षात्कृत्स्नो धनुर्वेदः समुपस्थास्यतेऽनघ ॥७॥
7. putraṁ tasya mahābhāgamṛcīkaṁ bhṛgunandanam ,
sākṣātkṛtsno dhanurvedaḥ samupasthāsyate'nagha.
7. putram tasya mahābhāgam ṛcīkam bhṛgunandanam
sākṣāt kṛtsnaḥ dhanurvedaḥ samupasthāsyate anagha
7. anagha tasya mahābhāgam putram ṛcīkam bhṛgunandanam
kṛtsnaḥ dhanurvedaḥ sākṣāt samupasthāsyate
7. O sinless one, the entire science of archery will directly present itself to his highly fortunate son, Ṛcīka, the descendant of Bhrigu.
क्षत्रियाणामभावाय दैवयुक्तेन हेतुना ।
स तु तं प्रतिगृह्यैव पुत्रे संक्रामयिष्यति ॥८॥
8. kṣatriyāṇāmabhāvāya daivayuktena hetunā ,
sa tu taṁ pratigṛhyaiva putre saṁkrāmayiṣyati.
8. kṣatriyāṇām abhāvāya daivayuktena hetunā saḥ
tu tam pratigṛhya eva putre saṃkrāmayisyati
8. saḥ tu tam pratigṛhya eva putre saṃkrāmayisyati
daivayuktena hetunā kṣatriyāṇām abhāvāya
8. But he, having accepted that (science), will transfer it to his son by a divinely ordained reason, for the destruction of the kṣatriyas.
जमदग्नौ महाभागे तपसा भावितात्मनि ।
स चापि भृगुशार्दूलस्तं वेदं धारयिष्यति ॥९॥
9. jamadagnau mahābhāge tapasā bhāvitātmani ,
sa cāpi bhṛguśārdūlastaṁ vedaṁ dhārayiṣyati.
9. jamadagnau mahābhāge tapasā bhāvitātmani saḥ
ca api bhṛguśārdūlaḥ tam vedam dhārayisyati
9. mahābhāge jamadagnau tapasā bhāvitātmani saḥ
ca api bhṛguśārdūlaḥ tam vedam dhārayisyati
9. To the illustrious Jamadagni, whose inner self has been purified by asceticism (tapas), that tiger among Bhrigus will also master that knowledge.
कुलात्तु तव धर्मात्मन्कन्यां सोऽधिगमिष्यति ।
उद्भावनार्थं भवतो वंशस्य नृपसत्तम ॥१०॥
10. kulāttu tava dharmātmankanyāṁ so'dhigamiṣyati ,
udbhāvanārthaṁ bhavato vaṁśasya nṛpasattama.
10. kulāt tu tava dharmātman kanyām saḥ adhigamiṣyati
udbhāvanārtham bhavataḥ vaṃśasya nṛpasattama
10. nṛpasattama dharmātman saḥ tava kulāt kanyām
bhavataḥ vaṃśasya udbhāvanārtham adhigamiṣyati tu
10. O righteous one (dharmātman), O best among kings, he will obtain a daughter from your family for the perpetuation of your lineage.
गाधेर्दुहितरं प्राप्य पौत्रीं तव महातपाः ।
ब्राह्मणं क्षत्रधर्माणं राममुत्पादयिष्यति ॥११॥
11. gādherduhitaraṁ prāpya pautrīṁ tava mahātapāḥ ,
brāhmaṇaṁ kṣatradharmāṇaṁ rāmamutpādayiṣyati.
11. gādheḥ duhitaram prāpya pautrīm tava mahātapāḥ
brāhmaṇam kṣatradharmāṇam rāmam utpādayiṣyati
11. tava pautrīm mahātapāḥ gādheḥ duhitaram prāpya
kṣatradharmāṇam brāhmaṇam rāmam utpādayiṣyati
11. Having obtained the daughter of Gādhi, your granddaughter, the great ascetic (mahātapāḥ), will beget Rāma, a brāhmaṇa with the intrinsic nature (dharma) of a warrior.
क्षत्रियं विप्रकर्माणं बृहस्पतिमिवौजसा ।
विश्वामित्रं तव कुले गाधेः पुत्रं सुधार्मिकम् ।
तपसा महता युक्तं प्रदास्यति महाद्युते ॥१२॥
12. kṣatriyaṁ viprakarmāṇaṁ bṛhaspatimivaujasā ,
viśvāmitraṁ tava kule gādheḥ putraṁ sudhārmikam ,
tapasā mahatā yuktaṁ pradāsyati mahādyute.
12. kṣatriyam viprakarmāṇam bṛhaspatim
iva ojasā viśvāmitram tava kule
gādheḥ putram sudhārmikam tapasā
mahatā yuktam pradāsyati mahādyute
12. mahādyute saḥ tava kule gādheḥ putram
kṣatriyam viprakarmāṇam ojasā
bṛhaspatim iva sudhārmikam mahatā
tapasā yuktam viśvāmitram pradāsyati
12. O greatly luminous one, he will bestow into your lineage Viśvāmitra, the son of Gādhi, who will be a kṣatriya performing the deeds of a brāhmaṇa, splendid with vigor like Bṛhaspati, exceedingly virtuous, and endowed with great austerity (tapas).
स्त्रियौ तु कारणं तत्र परिवर्ते भविष्यतः ।
पितामहनियोगाद्वै नान्यथैतद्भविष्यति ॥१३॥
13. striyau tu kāraṇaṁ tatra parivarte bhaviṣyataḥ ,
pitāmahaniyogādvai nānyathaitadbhaviṣyati.
13. striyau tu kāraṇam tatra parivarte bhaviṣyataḥ
pitāmahanīyogāt vai na anyathā etat bhaviṣyati
13. tatra striyau tu kāraṇam parivarte bhaviṣyataḥ
vai pitāmahanīyogāt etat na anyathā bhaviṣyati
13. Indeed, two women will be the reason for this alteration, and truly, due to the grandfather's directive, this will not come to pass differently.
तृतीये पुरुषे तुभ्यं ब्राह्मणत्वमुपैष्यति ।
भविता त्वं च संबन्धी भृगूणां भावितात्मनाम् ॥१४॥
14. tṛtīye puruṣe tubhyaṁ brāhmaṇatvamupaiṣyati ,
bhavitā tvaṁ ca saṁbandhī bhṛgūṇāṁ bhāvitātmanām.
14. tṛtīye puruṣe tubhyaṃ brāhmaṇatvam upaiṣyati
bhavitā tvaṃ ca saṃbandhī bhṛgūṇām bhāvitātmanām
14. tubhyaṃ tṛtīye puruṣe brāhmaṇatvam upaiṣyati ca
tvaṃ bhāvitātmanām bhṛgūṇām saṃbandhī bhavitā
14. In the third generation, brahminhood will come to your lineage. And you will become a relative of the Bhṛgus, who have cultivated their inner nature (ātman).
भीष्म उवाच ।
कुशिकस्तु मुनेर्वाक्यं च्यवनस्य महात्मनः ।
श्रुत्वा हृष्टोऽभवद्राजा वाक्यं चेदमुवाच ह ।
एवमस्त्विति धर्मात्मा तदा भरतसत्तम ॥१५॥
15. bhīṣma uvāca ,
kuśikastu munervākyaṁ cyavanasya mahātmanaḥ ,
śrutvā hṛṣṭo'bhavadrājā vākyaṁ cedamuvāca ha ,
evamastviti dharmātmā tadā bharatasattama.
15. bhīṣmaḥ uvāca kuśikaḥ tu muneḥ vākyaṃ
cyavanasya mahātmanaḥ śrutvā hṛṣṭaḥ
abhavat rājā vākyaṃ ca idam uvāca ha evam
astu iti dharmātmā tadā bharatasattama
15. bharatasattama bhīṣmaḥ uvāca tu mahātmanaḥ
cyavanasya muneḥ vākyaṃ śrutvā rājā
kuśikaḥ hṛṣṭaḥ abhavat ca tadā
dharmātmā idam vākyaṃ ha uvāca iti evam astu
15. Bhīṣma said: O best of the Bhāratas (bharatasattama), having heard the words of the great-souled sage Cyavana, King Kuśika became joyful. Then, that righteous one (dharmātmā) spoke this word: 'So be it!'
च्यवनस्तु महातेजाः पुनरेव नराधिपम् ।
वरार्थं चोदयामास तमुवाच स पार्थिवः ॥१६॥
16. cyavanastu mahātejāḥ punareva narādhipam ,
varārthaṁ codayāmāsa tamuvāca sa pārthivaḥ.
16. cyavanaḥ tu mahātejāḥ punaḥ eva narādhipam
varārthaṃ codayāmāsa tam uvāca saḥ pārthivaḥ
16. tu mahātejāḥ cyavanaḥ punaḥ eva narādhipam
varārthaṃ codayāmāsa saḥ pārthivaḥ tam uvāca
16. But Cyavana, the greatly resplendent sage, again urged the king for the sake of a boon. Then, that king spoke to him.
बाढमेवं ग्रहीष्यामि कामं त्वत्तो महामुने ।
ब्रह्मभूतं कुलं मेऽस्तु धर्मे चास्य मनो भवेत् ॥१७॥
17. bāḍhamevaṁ grahīṣyāmi kāmaṁ tvatto mahāmune ,
brahmabhūtaṁ kulaṁ me'stu dharme cāsya mano bhavet.
17. bāḍham evam grahīṣyāmi kāmaṃ tvattaḥ mahāmune
brahmabhūtaṃ kulaṃ me astu dharme ca asya manaḥ bhavet
17. mahāmune bāḍham evam kāmaṃ tvattaḥ grahīṣyāmi ca me
kulaṃ brahmabhūtaṃ astu asya manaḥ dharme bhavet
17. Certainly, O great sage, I will accept this boon from you. Let my lineage become endowed with spiritual knowledge (brahman), and may its mind be devoted to (dharma).
एवमुक्तस्तथेत्येवं प्रत्युक्त्वा च्यवनो मुनिः ।
अभ्यनुज्ञाय नृपतिं तीर्थयात्रां ययौ तदा ॥१८॥
18. evamuktastathetyevaṁ pratyuktvā cyavano muniḥ ,
abhyanujñāya nṛpatiṁ tīrthayātrāṁ yayau tadā.
18. evam uktaḥ tathā iti evam pratyuktvā cyavanaḥ
muniḥ abhyanujñāya nṛpatim tīrthayātrām yayau tadā
18. cyavanaḥ muniḥ evam uktaḥ tathā iti evam pratyuktvā
nṛpatim abhyanujñāya tadā tīrthayātrām yayau
18. After being spoken to in this manner, the sage (muni) Cyavana replied, "So be it," and then, having obtained the king's permission, he set out on a pilgrimage.
एतत्ते कथितं सर्वमशेषेण मया नृप ।
भृगूणां कुशिकानां च प्रति संबन्धकारणम् ॥१९॥
19. etatte kathitaṁ sarvamaśeṣeṇa mayā nṛpa ,
bhṛgūṇāṁ kuśikānāṁ ca prati saṁbandhakāraṇam.
19. etat te kathitam sarvam aśeṣeṇa mayā nṛpa
bhṛgūṇām kuśikānām ca prati sambandhakāraṇam
19. nṛpa mayā etat sarvam aśeṣeṇa te bhṛgūṇām ca
kuśikānām sambandhakāraṇam prati kathitam
19. O King, I have told you all this completely, regarding the cause of the relationship between the Bhrigus and the Kuśikas.
यथोक्तं मुनिना चापि तथा तदभवन्नृप ।
जन्म रामस्य च मुनेर्विश्वामित्रस्य चैव ह ॥२०॥
20. yathoktaṁ muninā cāpi tathā tadabhavannṛpa ,
janma rāmasya ca munerviśvāmitrasya caiva ha.
20. yathā uktam muninā ca api tathā tat abhavat nṛpa
janma rāmasya ca muneḥ viśvāmitrasya ca eva ha
20. nṛpa yathā muninā uktam ca api tathā tat abhavat
ca janma rāmasya ca muneḥ viśvāmitrasya eva ha
20. O King, it happened just as the sage (muni) had spoken, and so too occurred the birth of Rāma and of the sage (muni) Viśvāmitra.
