मार्कण्डेय उवाच ।
एतस्मिन्नेव काले तु द्युमत्सेनो महावने ।
लब्धचक्षुः प्रसन्नात्मा दृष्ट्या सर्वं ददर्श ह ॥१॥
1. mārkaṇḍeya uvāca ,
etasminneva kāle tu dyumatseno mahāvane ,
labdhacakṣuḥ prasannātmā dṛṣṭyā sarvaṁ dadarśa ha.

1. Markandeya said: Just at that very time, King Dyumatsena, in the great forest, having regained his eyesight and with a joyful spirit (ātman), indeed saw everything with his vision.
स सर्वानाश्रमान्गत्वा शैब्यया सह भार्यया ।
पुत्रहेतोः परामार्तिं जगाम मनुजर्षभ ॥२॥
2. sa sarvānāśramāngatvā śaibyayā saha bhāryayā ,
putrahetoḥ parāmārtiṁ jagāma manujarṣabha.
2. sa sarvān āśramān gatvā śaibyayā saha bhāryayā
putrahetoḥ parām ārtiṃ jagāma manujarṣabha
2. O best among men, he, accompanied by his wife Śaibyā, went to all the hermitages and experienced great distress for the sake of a son.
तावाश्रमान्नदीश्चैव वनानि च सरांसि च ।
तांस्तान्देशान्विचिन्वन्तौ दम्पती परिजग्मतुः ॥३॥
3. tāvāśramānnadīścaiva vanāni ca sarāṁsi ca ,
tāṁstāndeśānvicinvantau dampatī parijagmatuḥ.
3. tau āśramān nadīḥ ca eva vanāni ca sarāṃsi ca
tān tān deśān vicinvantau dampatī parijagmatuḥ
3. The couple, searching those very regions, traversed hermitages, rivers, forests, and lakes.
श्रुत्वा शब्दं तु यत्किंचिदुन्मुखौ सुतशङ्कया ।
सावित्रीसहितोऽभ्येति सत्यवानित्यधावताम् ॥४॥
4. śrutvā śabdaṁ tu yatkiṁcidunmukhau sutaśaṅkayā ,
sāvitrīsahito'bhyeti satyavānityadhāvatām.
4. śrutvā śabdaṃ tu yat kiṃcit unmukhau sutaśaṅkayā
sāvitrīsahitaḥ abhyeti satyavān iti adhāvatām
4. Upon hearing any sound, they would look up with the apprehension of a son. 'Satyavān is coming with Sāvitrī!' - thinking this, they would rush.
भिन्नैश्च परुषैः पादैः सव्रणैः शोणितोक्षितैः ।
कुशकण्टकविद्धाङ्गावुन्मत्ताविव धावतः ॥५॥
5. bhinnaiśca paruṣaiḥ pādaiḥ savraṇaiḥ śoṇitokṣitaiḥ ,
kuśakaṇṭakaviddhāṅgāvunmattāviva dhāvataḥ.
5. bhinnaiḥ ca paruṣaiḥ pādaiḥ savraṇaiḥ śoṇitokṣitaiḥ
kuśakaṇṭakaviddhāṅgau unmattau iva dhāvataḥ
5. With their feet cracked, rough, wounded, and drenched in blood, their bodies pierced by Kuśa grass and thorns, they ran like mad persons.
ततोऽभिसृत्य तैर्विप्रैः सर्वैराश्रमवासिभिः ।
परिवार्य समाश्वास्य समानीतौ स्वमाश्रमम् ॥६॥
6. tato'bhisṛtya tairvipraiḥ sarvairāśramavāsibhiḥ ,
parivārya samāśvāsya samānītau svamāśramam.
6. tataḥ abhisṛtya taiḥ vipraiḥ sarvaiḥ āśramavāsibhiḥ
parivārya samāśvāsya samānītau svam āśramam
6. Then, all those brahmins and other hermitage dwellers approached them, surrounded them, and having consoled them, brought them back to their own hermitage.
तत्र भार्यासहायः स वृतो वृद्धैस्तपोधनैः ।
आश्वासितो विचित्रार्थैः पूर्वराज्ञां कथाश्रयैः ॥७॥
7. tatra bhāryāsahāyaḥ sa vṛto vṛddhaistapodhanaiḥ ,
āśvāsito vicitrārthaiḥ pūrvarājñāṁ kathāśrayaiḥ.
7. tatra bhāryāsahāyaḥ saḥ vṛtaḥ vṛddhaiḥ tapodhanaiḥ
āśvāsitaḥ vicitrārthaiḥ pūrvarājñām kathāśrayaiḥ
7. There, he, accompanied by his wife, was surrounded by aged ascetics (tapas) and consoled by various inspiring stories relating to ancient kings.
ततस्तौ पुनराश्वस्तौ वृद्धौ पुत्रदिदृक्षया ।
बाल्ये वृत्तानि पुत्रस्य स्मरन्तौ भृशदुःखितौ ॥८॥
8. tatastau punarāśvastau vṛddhau putradidṛkṣayā ,
bālye vṛttāni putrasya smarantau bhṛśaduḥkhitau.
8. tataḥ tau punaḥ āśvastau vṛddhau putradidṛkṣayā
bālye vṛttāni putrasya smarantau bhṛśaduḥkhitau
8. Then, those two aged individuals, though once again consoled, were still deeply distressed, as they remembered the events of their son's childhood and yearned to see him.
पुनरुक्त्वा च करुणां वाचं तौ शोककर्शितौ ।
हा पुत्र हा साध्वि वधूः क्वासि क्वासीत्यरोदताम् ॥९॥
9. punaruktvā ca karuṇāṁ vācaṁ tau śokakarśitau ,
hā putra hā sādhvi vadhūḥ kvāsi kvāsītyarodatām.
9. punaḥ uktvā ca karuṇām vācam tau śokakarśitau hā
putra hā sādhvi vadhūḥ kva asi kva asi iti arodātām
9. And those two, emaciated by grief, once again uttered a piteous cry, lamenting, "Alas, son! Alas, chaste daughter-in-law! Where are you? Where are you?"
सुवर्चा उवाच ।
यथास्य भार्या सावित्री तपसा च दमेन च ।
आचारेण च संयुक्ता तथा जीवति सत्यवान् ॥१०॥
10. suvarcā uvāca ,
yathāsya bhāryā sāvitrī tapasā ca damena ca ,
ācāreṇa ca saṁyuktā tathā jīvati satyavān.
10. suvarcā uvāca | yathā asya bhāryā sāvitrī tapasā ca
damena ca | ācāreṇa ca saṃyuktā tathā jīvati satyavān
10. Suvarcā said: Just as his wife Sāvitrī is endowed with austerity (tapas), self-control, and good conduct, so too does Satyavān remain alive.
गौतम उवाच ।
वेदाः साङ्गा मयाधीतास्तपो मे संचितं महत् ।
कौमारं ब्रह्मचर्यं मे गुरवोऽग्निश्च तोषिताः ॥११॥
11. gautama uvāca ,
vedāḥ sāṅgā mayādhītāstapo me saṁcitaṁ mahat ,
kaumāraṁ brahmacaryaṁ me guravo'gniśca toṣitāḥ.
11. gautama uvāca | vedāḥ sāṅgā mayā adhītāḥ tapaḥ me saṃcitam
mahat | kaumāram brahmacaryam me guravaḥ agniḥ ca toṣitāḥ
11. Gautama said: I have studied the Vedas along with their auxiliary branches; great austerity (tapas) has been accumulated by me; my celibacy (brahmacarya) observed since childhood has been maintained, and my teachers (gurus) and the fire god have been pleased.
समाहितेन चीर्णानि सर्वाण्येव व्रतानि मे ।
वायुभक्षोपवासश्च कुशलानि च यानि मे ॥१२॥
12. samāhitena cīrṇāni sarvāṇyeva vratāni me ,
vāyubhakṣopavāsaśca kuśalāni ca yāni me.
12. samāhitena cīrṇāni sarvāṇi eva vratāni me
| vāyubhakṣopavāsaḥ ca kuśalāni ca yāni me
12. All my vows have been observed with focused concentration; and those meritorious deeds (kuśala), such as subsisting on air and fasting, that belong to me (i.e., that I have performed) have also been accomplished.
अनेन तपसा वेद्मि सर्वं परिचिकीर्षितम् ।
सत्यमेतन्निबोध त्वं ध्रियते सत्यवानिति ॥१३॥
13. anena tapasā vedmi sarvaṁ paricikīrṣitam ,
satyametannibodha tvaṁ dhriyate satyavāniti.
13. anena tapasā vedmi sarvam paricikīrṣitam |
satyam etat nibodha tvam dhriyate satyavān iti
13. Through this austerity (tapas), I know everything that is intended. Understand this truth, that Satyavān is indeed being sustained (i.e., is alive).
शिष्य उवाच ।
उपाध्यायस्य मे वक्त्राद्यथा वाक्यं विनिःसृतम् ।
नैतज्जातु भवेन्मिथ्या तथा जीवति सत्यवान् ॥१४॥
14. śiṣya uvāca ,
upādhyāyasya me vaktrādyathā vākyaṁ viniḥsṛtam ,
naitajjātu bhavenmithyā tathā jīvati satyavān.
14. śiṣyaḥ uvāca upādhyāyasya me vaktrāt yathā vākyam
viniḥsṛtam na etat jātu bhavet mithyā tathā jīvati satyavān
14. The disciple said, "As the word came forth from the mouth of my teacher, may it never be false, and thus may Satyavān live."
ऋषय ऊचुः ।
यथास्य भार्या सावित्री सर्वैरेव सुलक्षणैः ।
अवैधव्यकरैर्युक्ता तथा जीवति सत्यवान् ॥१५॥
15. ṛṣaya ūcuḥ ,
yathāsya bhāryā sāvitrī sarvaireva sulakṣaṇaiḥ ,
avaidhavyakarairyuktā tathā jīvati satyavān.
15. ṛṣayaḥ ūcuḥ yathā asya bhāryā sāvitrī sarvaiḥ eva
sulakṣaṇaiḥ avaidhavya-karaiḥ yuktā tathā jīvati satyavān
15. The sages said, "As his wife Sāvitrī is endowed with all auspicious marks that prevent widowhood, so may Satyavān live."
भारद्वाज उवाच ।
यथास्य भार्या सावित्री तपसा च दमेन च ।
आचारेण च संयुक्ता तथा जीवति सत्यवान् ॥१६॥
16. bhāradvāja uvāca ,
yathāsya bhāryā sāvitrī tapasā ca damena ca ,
ācāreṇa ca saṁyuktā tathā jīvati satyavān.
16. bhāradvājaḥ uvāca yathā asya bhāryā sāvitrī tapasā ca
damena ca ācāreṇa ca saṃyuktā tathā jīvati satyavān
16. Bhāradvāja said, "As his wife Sāvitrī is endowed with austerity (tapas), self-control, and good conduct, so may Satyavān live."
दाल्भ्य उवाच ।
यथा दृष्टिः प्रवृत्ता ते सावित्र्याश्च यथा व्रतम् ।
गताहारमकृत्वा च तथा जीवति सत्यवान् ॥१७॥
17. dālbhya uvāca ,
yathā dṛṣṭiḥ pravṛttā te sāvitryāśca yathā vratam ,
gatāhāramakṛtvā ca tathā jīvati satyavān.
17. dālbhyaḥ uvāca yathā dṛṣṭiḥ pravṛttā te sāvitryāḥ ca
yathā vratam gata-āhāram akṛtvā ca tathā jīvati satyavān
17. Dālbhya said, "As your (Sāvitrī's) sight is intent, and as your vow is steadfast, and as you have not taken food, so may Satyavān live."
माण्डव्य उवाच ।
यथा वदन्ति शान्तायां दिशि वै मृगपक्षिणः ।
पार्थिवी च प्रवृत्तिस्ते तथा जीवति सत्यवान् ॥१८॥
18. māṇḍavya uvāca ,
yathā vadanti śāntāyāṁ diśi vai mṛgapakṣiṇaḥ ,
pārthivī ca pravṛttiste tathā jīvati satyavān.
18. māṇḍavyaḥ uvāca yathā vadanti śāntāyām diśi vai
mṛgapakṣiṇaḥ pārthivī ca pravṛttiḥ te tathā jīvati satyavān
18. Māṇḍavya said: "Just as the animals and birds make auspicious sounds in a peaceful direction, and as your earthly disposition (pravṛtti) indicates, so too Satyavān lives."
धौम्य उवाच ।
सर्वैर्गुणैरुपेतस्ते यथा पुत्रो जनप्रियः ।
दीर्घायुर्लक्षणोपेतस्तथा जीवति सत्यवान् ॥१९॥
19. dhaumya uvāca ,
sarvairguṇairupetaste yathā putro janapriyaḥ ,
dīrghāyurlakṣaṇopetastathā jīvati satyavān.
19. dhaumyaḥ uvāca sarvaiḥ guṇaiḥ upetaḥ te yathā putraḥ
janapriyaḥ dīrghāyuḥ lakṣaṇopetaḥ tathā jīvati satyavān
19. Dhaumya said: "Just as your son (Satyavān) is endowed with all good qualities and is beloved by people, and similarly possesses the signs of a long life, so too Satyavān lives."
मार्कण्डेय उवाच ।
एवमाश्वासितस्तैस्तु सत्यवाग्भिस्तपस्विभिः ।
तांस्तान्विगणयन्नर्थानवस्थित इवाभवत् ॥२०॥
20. mārkaṇḍeya uvāca ,
evamāśvāsitastaistu satyavāgbhistapasvibhiḥ ,
tāṁstānvigaṇayannarthānavasthita ivābhavat.
20. mārkaṇḍeyaḥ uvāca evam āśvāsitaḥ taiḥ tu satyavāgbhiḥ
tapasvibhiḥ tān tān vigaṇayan arthān avasthitaḥ iva abhavat
20. Mārkaṇḍeya said: "Thus comforted by those truth-speaking ascetics (tapasvin), he (the king Dyumatsena) became as if composed, contemplating those (auspicious) matters."
ततो मुहूर्तात्सावित्री भर्त्रा सत्यवता सह ।
आजगामाश्रमं रात्रौ प्रहृष्टा प्रविवेश ह ॥२१॥
21. tato muhūrtātsāvitrī bhartrā satyavatā saha ,
ājagāmāśramaṁ rātrau prahṛṣṭā praviveśa ha.
21. tataḥ muhūrtāt sāvitrī bhartrā satyavatā saha
ājagāma āśramam rātrau prahṛṣṭā praviveśa ha
21. Then, after a short while, Sāvitrī, delighted, arrived at the hermitage with her husband Satyavān and indeed entered it during the night.
ब्राह्मणा ऊचुः ।
पुत्रेण संगतं त्वाद्य चक्षुष्मन्तं निरीक्ष्य च ।
सर्वे वयं वै पृच्छामो वृद्धिं ते पृथिवीपते ॥२२॥
22. brāhmaṇā ūcuḥ ,
putreṇa saṁgataṁ tvādya cakṣuṣmantaṁ nirīkṣya ca ,
sarve vayaṁ vai pṛcchāmo vṛddhiṁ te pṛthivīpate.
22. brāhmaṇāḥ ūcuḥ putreṇa saṃgatam tvā adya cakṣuṣmantam
nirīkṣya ca sarve vayam vai pṛcchāmaḥ vṛddhim te pṛthivīpate
22. The Brahmins said: "Today, having seen you united with your son and endowed with sight, all of us indeed ask about your prosperity, O king."
समागमेन पुत्रस्य सावित्र्या दर्शनेन च ।
चक्षुषश्चात्मनो लाभात्त्रिभिर्दिष्ट्या विवर्धसे ॥२३॥
23. samāgamena putrasya sāvitryā darśanena ca ,
cakṣuṣaścātmano lābhāttribhirdiṣṭyā vivardhase.
23. samāgamena putrasya sāvitryā darśanena ca cakṣuṣaḥ
ca ātmanaḥ lābhāt tribhiḥ diṣṭyā vivardhase
23. You prosper auspiciously by three things: the reunion with your son, the sight of Sāvitrī, and the recovery of your own self (ātman)'s eyesight.
सर्वैरस्माभिरुक्तं यत्तथा तन्नात्र संशयः ।
भूयो भूयश्च वृद्धिस्ते क्षिप्रमेव भविष्यति ॥२४॥
24. sarvairasmābhiruktaṁ yattathā tannātra saṁśayaḥ ,
bhūyo bhūyaśca vṛddhiste kṣiprameva bhaviṣyati.
24. sarvaiḥ asmābhiḥ uktam yat tathā tat na atra saṃśayaḥ
bhūyaḥ bhūyaḥ ca vṛddhiḥ te kṣipram eva bhaviṣyati
24. What has been declared by all of us is indeed true; there is no doubt about it. Your prosperity will quickly increase again and again.
मार्कण्डेय उवाच ।
ततोऽग्निं तत्र संज्वाल्य द्विजास्ते सर्व एव हि ।
उपासां चक्रिरे पार्थ द्युमत्सेनं महीपतिम् ॥२५॥
25. mārkaṇḍeya uvāca ,
tato'gniṁ tatra saṁjvālya dvijāste sarva eva hi ,
upāsāṁ cakrire pārtha dyumatsenaṁ mahīpatim.
25. mārkaṇḍeyaḥ uvāca tataḥ agnim tatra saṃjvālya dvijāḥ te
sarve eva hi upāsām cakrire pārtha dyumatsenam mahīpatim
25. Mārkaṇḍeya said: "Then, having kindled a fire there, all those Brahmins indeed honored King Dyumatsena, O Pārtha."
शैब्या च सत्यवांश्चैव सावित्री चैकतः स्थिताः ।
सर्वैस्तैरभ्यनुज्ञाता विशोकाः समुपाविशन् ॥२६॥
26. śaibyā ca satyavāṁścaiva sāvitrī caikataḥ sthitāḥ ,
sarvaistairabhyanujñātā viśokāḥ samupāviśan.
26. śaibyā ca satyavān ca eva sāvitrī ca ekataḥ sthitāḥ
sarvaiḥ taiḥ abhyanujñātāḥ viśokāḥ samupāviśan
26. Shaibya, Satyavan, and Savitri were standing together on one side. Having received permission from all present, they sat down, free from sorrow.
ततो राज्ञा सहासीनाः सर्वे ते वनवासिनः ।
जातकौतूहलाः पार्थ पप्रच्छुर्नृपतेः सुतम् ॥२७॥
27. tato rājñā sahāsīnāḥ sarve te vanavāsinaḥ ,
jātakautūhalāḥ pārtha papracchurnṛpateḥ sutam.
27. tataḥ rājñā saha āsīnāḥ sarve te vanavāsinaḥ
jāta kautūhalāḥ pārtha papracchuḥ nṛpateḥ sutam
27. Then, O Pārtha, all those forest dwellers who were seated with the king, having become curious, questioned the king's son.
प्रागेव नागतं कस्मात्सभार्येण त्वया विभो ।
विरात्रे चागतं कस्मात्कोऽनुबन्धश्च तेऽभवत् ॥२८॥
28. prāgeva nāgataṁ kasmātsabhāryeṇa tvayā vibho ,
virātre cāgataṁ kasmātko'nubandhaśca te'bhavat.
28. prāk eva na āgatam kasmāt sabhāryeṇa tvayā vibho
virātre ca āgatam kasmāt kaḥ anubandhaḥ ca te abhavat
28. O Lord (vibho), why did you not arrive earlier with your wife? And why did you arrive so late in the night? What was the reason (anubandha) for your delay?
संतापितः पिता माता वयं चैव नृपात्मज ।
नाकस्मादिति जानीमस्तत्सर्वं वक्तुमर्हसि ॥२९॥
29. saṁtāpitaḥ pitā mātā vayaṁ caiva nṛpātmaja ,
nākasmāditi jānīmastatsarvaṁ vaktumarhasi.
29. saṃtāpitaḥ pitā mātā vayam ca eva nṛpa ātmaja
na akasmāt iti jānīmaḥ tat sarvam vaktum arhasi
29. O son of the king (nṛpātmaja), your father, mother, and indeed we ourselves, were greatly distressed. We understand that this did not happen without a reason, so you ought to tell us everything.
सत्यवानुवाच ।
पित्राहमभ्यनुज्ञातः सावित्रीसहितो गतः ।
अथ मेऽभूच्छिरोदुःखं वने काष्ठानि भिन्दतः ॥३०॥
30. satyavānuvāca ,
pitrāhamabhyanujñātaḥ sāvitrīsahito gataḥ ,
atha me'bhūcchiroduḥkhaṁ vane kāṣṭhāni bhindataḥ.
30. satyavān uvāca | pitrā aham abhyanujñātaḥ sāvitrī-sahitaḥ
gataḥ | atha me abhūt śiraḥ-duḥkham vane kāṣṭhāni bhindataḥ
30. Satyavān said: "My father permitted me, and I went with Sāvitrī. Then, while splitting wood in the forest, I experienced a headache."
सुप्तश्चाहं वेदनया चिरमित्युपलक्षये ।
तावत्कालं च न मया सुप्तपूर्वं कदाचन ॥३१॥
31. suptaścāhaṁ vedanayā ciramityupalakṣaye ,
tāvatkālaṁ ca na mayā suptapūrvaṁ kadācana.
31. suptaḥ ca aham vedanayā ciram iti upalakṣaye
| tāvat-kālam ca na mayā supta-pūrvam kadācana
31. I realized that I had slept for a long time due to the pain, and I had never slept for such a long duration before.
सर्वेषामेव भवतां संतापो मा भवेदिति ।
अतो विरात्रागमनं नान्यदस्तीह कारणम् ॥३२॥
32. sarveṣāmeva bhavatāṁ saṁtāpo mā bhavediti ,
ato virātrāgamanaṁ nānyadastīha kāraṇam.
32. sarveṣām eva bhavatām santāpaḥ mā bhavet iti |
ataḥ vi-rātra āgamanam na anyat asti iha kāraṇam
32. So that none of you may feel distress, this is why I returned late at night; there is no other reason here.
गौतम उवाच ।
अकस्माच्चक्षुषः प्राप्तिर्द्युमत्सेनस्य ते पितुः ।
नास्य त्वं कारणं वेत्थ सावित्री वक्तुमर्हति ॥३३॥
33. gautama uvāca ,
akasmāccakṣuṣaḥ prāptirdyumatsenasya te pituḥ ,
nāsya tvaṁ kāraṇaṁ vettha sāvitrī vaktumarhati.
33. gautama uvāca | akasmāt cakṣuṣaḥ prāptiḥ dyumatsenasya te
pituḥ | na asya tvam kāraṇam vettha sāvitrī vaktum arhati
33. Gautama said: "Your father, Dyumatsena, has unexpectedly regained his eyesight. You do not know the reason for this; Sāvitrī should explain it."
श्रोतुमिच्छामि सावित्रि त्वं हि वेत्थ परावरम् ।
त्वां हि जानामि सावित्रि सावित्रीमिव तेजसा ॥३४॥
34. śrotumicchāmi sāvitri tvaṁ hi vettha parāvaram ,
tvāṁ hi jānāmi sāvitri sāvitrīmiva tejasā.
34. śrotum icchāmi sāvitri tvam hi vettha parāvaram
tvām hi jānāmi sāvitri sāvitrīm iva tejasā
34. I wish to hear, O Sāvitrī, for you indeed know all things, both higher and lower (parāvaram). Truly, O Sāvitrī, I know your splendor to be like that of the goddess Sāvitrī herself.
त्वमत्र हेतुं जानीषे तस्मात्सत्यं निरुच्यताम् ।
रहस्यं यदि ते नास्ति किंचिदत्र वदस्व नः ॥३५॥
35. tvamatra hetuṁ jānīṣe tasmātsatyaṁ nirucyatām ,
rahasyaṁ yadi te nāsti kiṁcidatra vadasva naḥ.
35. tvam atra hetum jānīṣe tasmāt satyam nirucyatām
rahasyam yadi te na asti kiñcit atra vadasva naḥ
35. You know the cause in this matter; therefore, let the truth be stated. If there is no secret of yours here, tell us.
सावित्र्युवाच ।
एवमेतद्यथा वेत्थ संकल्पो नान्यथा हि वः ।
न च किंचिद्रहस्यं मे श्रूयतां तथ्यमत्र यत् ॥३६॥
36. sāvitryuvāca ,
evametadyathā vettha saṁkalpo nānyathā hi vaḥ ,
na ca kiṁcidrahasyaṁ me śrūyatāṁ tathyamatra yat.
36. sāvitrī uvāca evam etat yathā vettha saṅkalpaḥ na anyathā
hi vaḥ na ca kiñcit rahasyam me śrūyatām tathyum atra yat
36. Sāvitrī said: 'It is indeed as you know; your resolve (saṅkalpa) is certainly not otherwise. And I have no secret. Let what is true in this matter be heard.'
मृत्युर्मे भर्तुराख्यातो नारदेन महात्मना ।
स चाद्य दिवसः प्राप्तस्ततो नैनं जहाम्यहम् ॥३७॥
37. mṛtyurme bharturākhyāto nāradena mahātmanā ,
sa cādya divasaḥ prāptastato nainaṁ jahāmyaham.
37. mṛtyuḥ me bhartuḥ ākhyātaḥ nāradena mahātmanā saḥ
ca adya divasaḥ prāptaḥ tataḥ na enam jahāmi aham
37. The great-souled (mahātman) Nārada told me about my husband's death. And that very day has arrived today. Therefore, I will not abandon him.
सुप्तं चैनं यमः साक्षादुपागच्छत्सकिंकरः ।
स एनमनयद्बद्ध्वा दिशं पितृनिषेविताम् ॥३८॥
38. suptaṁ cainaṁ yamaḥ sākṣādupāgacchatsakiṁkaraḥ ,
sa enamanayadbaddhvā diśaṁ pitṛniṣevitām.
38. suptam ca enam yamaḥ sākṣāt upāgacchat sa kiṅkaraḥ
| sa enam anayat baddhvā diśam pitṛniṣevitām
38. And while he slept, Yama himself came with his attendants. He led him away, bound, to the region frequented by the ancestors.
अस्तौषं तमहं देवं सत्येन वचसा विभुम् ।
पञ्च वै तेन मे दत्ता वराः शृणुत तान्मम ॥३९॥
39. astauṣaṁ tamahaṁ devaṁ satyena vacasā vibhum ,
pañca vai tena me dattā varāḥ śṛṇuta tānmama.
39. astauṣam tam aham devam satyena vacasā vibhum |
pañca vai tena me dattāḥ varāḥ śṛṇuta tān mama
39. I praised that mighty god (Yama) with truthful words. Indeed, five boons were granted to me by him. Listen now to those boons of mine.
चक्षुषी च स्वराज्यं च द्वौ वरौ श्वशुरस्य मे ।
लब्धं पितुः पुत्रशतं पुत्राणामात्मनः शतम् ॥४०॥
40. cakṣuṣī ca svarājyaṁ ca dvau varau śvaśurasya me ,
labdhaṁ pituḥ putraśataṁ putrāṇāmātmanaḥ śatam.
40. cakṣuṣī ca svarājyam ca dvau varau śvaśurasya me
| labdham pituḥ putraśatam putrāṇām ātmanaḥ śatam
40. For my father-in-law, I obtained two boons: his sight and his kingdom. I also received a hundred sons for my father, and a hundred sons for myself (ātman).
चतुर्वर्षशतायुर्मे भर्ता लब्धश्च सत्यवान् ।
भर्तुर्हि जीवितार्थं तु मया चीर्णं स्थिरं व्रतम् ॥४१॥
41. caturvarṣaśatāyurme bhartā labdhaśca satyavān ,
bharturhi jīvitārthaṁ tu mayā cīrṇaṁ sthiraṁ vratam.
41. catuḥ varṣaśata āyuḥ me bhartā labdhaḥ ca satyavān |
bhartuḥ hi jīvita artham tu mayā cīrṇam sthiram vratam
41. My husband Satyavan was also obtained with a lifespan of four hundred years. Indeed, I had undertaken a firm vow for the sake of my husband's life.
एतत्सत्यं मयाख्यातं कारणं विस्तरेण वः ।
यथा वृत्तं सुखोदर्कमिदं दुःखं महन्मम ॥४२॥
42. etatsatyaṁ mayākhyātaṁ kāraṇaṁ vistareṇa vaḥ ,
yathā vṛttaṁ sukhodarkamidaṁ duḥkhaṁ mahanmama.
42. etat satyam mayā ākhyātam kāraṇam vistareṇa vaḥ
yathā vṛttam sukhodarkam idam duḥkham mahat mama
42. I have recounted to you in detail this truth, the cause of my great suffering, which ultimately led to a pleasant outcome, just as it transpired.
ऋषय ऊचुः ।
निमज्जमानं व्यसनैरभिद्रुतं कुलं नरेन्द्रस्य तमोमये ह्रदे ।
त्वया सुशीले धृतधर्मपुण्यया समुद्धृतं साध्वि पुनः कुलीनया ॥४३॥
43. ṛṣaya ūcuḥ ,
nimajjamānaṁ vyasanairabhidrutaṁ; kulaṁ narendrasya tamomaye hrade ,
tvayā suśīle dhṛtadharmapuṇyayā; samuddhṛtaṁ sādhvi punaḥ kulīnayā.
43. ṛṣayaḥ ūcuḥ nimajjamānam vyasanaiḥ
abhidrutam kulam narendrasya tamomaye
hrade tvayā suśīle dhṛtadharmapuṇyayā
samuddhṛtam sādhvi punaḥ kulīnayā
43. The sages said: 'O virtuous and noble lady, by you, who uphold righteousness (dharma) and possess great merit, the king's lineage, overwhelmed by calamities and sinking into a dark abyss, has been uplifted once again.'
मार्कण्डेय उवाच ।
तथा प्रशस्य ह्यभिपूज्य चैव ते वरस्त्रियं तामृषयः समागताः ।
नरेन्द्रमामन्त्र्य सपुत्रमञ्जसा शिवेन जग्मुर्मुदिताः स्वमालयम् ॥४४॥
44. mārkaṇḍeya uvāca ,
tathā praśasya hyabhipūjya caiva te; varastriyaṁ tāmṛṣayaḥ samāgatāḥ ,
narendramāmantrya saputramañjasā; śivena jagmurmuditāḥ svamālayam.

abhipūjya ca eva te varastriyam tām ṛṣayaḥ
samāgatāḥ narendram āmantrya saputram
añjasā śivena jagmuḥ muditāḥ svam ālayam
44. Mārkaṇḍeya said: The assembled sages, having thus praised and honored that excellent woman, then, delighted, bid a proper farewell to the king and his son, and went safely to their own abodes.
