तस्मिन्नहनि निर्वृत्ते घोरे प्राणभृतां क्षये ।
आदित्येऽस्तंगते श्रीमान्संध्याकाल उपस्थिते ॥१॥

1. Sanjaya said: When that day, marked by a terrible slaughter of living beings, concluded, and the sun had set, the glorious twilight (sandhyākāla) period arrived.
व्यपयातेषु सैन्येषु वासाय भरतर्षभ ।
हत्वा संशप्तकव्रातान्दिव्यैरस्त्रैः कपिध्वजः ॥२॥
2. vyapayāteṣu sainyeṣu vāsāya bharatarṣabha ,
hatvā saṁśaptakavrātāndivyairastraiḥ kapidhvajaḥ.

2. O best of Bharatas (bharatarṣabha), when the armies had dispersed to their quarters for the night, Arjuna (kapidhvaja), having slain the hosts of Saṃśaptakas with divine weapons...
प्रायात्स्वशिबिरं जिष्णुर्जैत्रमास्थाय तं रथम् ।
गच्छन्नेव च गोविन्दं सन्नकण्ठोऽभ्यभाषत ॥३॥
3. prāyātsvaśibiraṁ jiṣṇurjaitramāsthāya taṁ ratham ,
gacchanneva ca govindaṁ sannakaṇṭho'bhyabhāṣata.
3. prāyāt sva-śibiram jiṣṇuḥ jaitram āsthāya tam ratham
gacchan eva ca govindam sanna-kaṇṭhaḥ abhyabhāṣata
3. jiṣṇuḥ tam jaitram ratham āsthāya sva-śibiram prāyāt.
gacchan eva ca sanna-kaṇṭhaḥ govindam abhyabhāṣata
3. The victorious Arjuna (jiṣṇu), mounting that triumphant chariot, went towards his own camp. And as he journeyed, with a choked voice, he addressed Govinda (Krishna).
किं नु मे हृदयं त्रस्तं वाक्यं सज्जति केशव ।
स्पन्दन्ति चाप्यनिष्टानि गात्रं सीदति चाच्युत ॥४॥
4. kiṁ nu me hṛdayaṁ trastaṁ vākyaṁ sajjati keśava ,
spandanti cāpyaniṣṭāni gātraṁ sīdati cācyuta.
4. kim nu me hṛdayam trastam vākyam sajjati keśava
spandanti ca api anīṣṭāni gātram sīdati ca acyuta
4. keśava acyuta kim nu me hṛdayam trastam vākyam
sajjati ca api anīṣṭāni spandanti ca gātram sīdati
4. Why, Keśava, is my heart so agitated? My speech falters. Inauspicious omens are indeed appearing, and my body feels like it is collapsing, Acyuta.
अनिष्टं चैव मे श्लिष्टं हृदयान्नापसर्पति ।
भुवि यद्दिक्षु चाप्युग्रा उत्पातास्त्रासयन्ति माम् ॥५॥
5. aniṣṭaṁ caiva me śliṣṭaṁ hṛdayānnāpasarpati ,
bhuvi yaddikṣu cāpyugrā utpātāstrāsayanti mām.
5. anīṣṭam ca eva me śliṣṭam hṛdayāt na apasarpati
bhuvi yat dikṣu ca api ugrāḥ utpātāḥ trāsayanti mām
5. me anīṣṭam ca eva śliṣṭam hṛdayāt na apasarpati
yat bhuvi dikṣu ca api ugrāḥ utpātāḥ mām trāsayanti
5. This inauspicious feeling clings to me and does not leave my heart. And indeed, the dreadful omens appearing on earth and in the various directions frighten me.
बहुप्रकारा दृश्यन्ते सर्व एवाघशंसिनः ।
अपि स्वस्ति भवेद्राज्ञः सामात्यस्य गुरोर्मम ॥६॥
6. bahuprakārā dṛśyante sarva evāghaśaṁsinaḥ ,
api svasti bhavedrājñaḥ sāmātyasya gurormama.
6. bahuprakārāḥ dṛśyante sarve eva aghaśaṃsinaḥ
api svasti bhavet rājñaḥ sāmātyasya guroḥ mama
6. bahuprakārāḥ dṛśyante sarve eva aghaśaṃsinaḥ

6. These omens appear in many forms, and all of them indeed portend evil. I wish that well-being (svasti) may befall my king and preceptor (guru), along with their ministers.
वासुदेव उवाच ।
व्यक्तं शिवं तव भ्रातुः सामात्यस्य भविष्यति ।
मा शुचः किंचिदेवान्यत्तत्रानिष्टं भविष्यति ॥७॥
7. vāsudeva uvāca ,
vyaktaṁ śivaṁ tava bhrātuḥ sāmātyasya bhaviṣyati ,
mā śucaḥ kiṁcidevānyattatrāniṣṭaṁ bhaviṣyati.
7. vāsudeva uvāca vyaktam śivam tava bhrātuḥ sāmātyasya
bhaviṣyati mā śucaḥ kiñcit eva anyat tatra anīṣṭam bhaviṣyati
7. vāsudeva uvāca vyaktam tava sāmātyasya bhrātuḥ śivam
bhaviṣyati mā śucaḥ kiñcit eva anyat anīṣṭam tatra bhaviṣyati
7. Vāsudeva said: It is clear that auspiciousness will befall your brother and his ministers. Do not grieve. Something else (anīṣṭa) will indeed occur there, some misfortune for others.
संजय उवाच ।
ततः संध्यामुपास्यैव वीरौ वीरावसादने ।
कथयन्तौ रणे वृत्तं प्रयातौ रथमास्थितौ ॥८॥
8. saṁjaya uvāca ,
tataḥ saṁdhyāmupāsyaiva vīrau vīrāvasādane ,
kathayantau raṇe vṛttaṁ prayātau rathamāsthitau.

| kathayantau raṇe vṛttam prayātau ratham āsthitau

8. Sanjaya said: Then, having performed the twilight (sandhyā) ritual, the two heroes, at the time when heroes are exhausted (from battle), mounted their chariot and departed, discussing what had transpired in the battle (raṇa).
ततः स्वशिबिरं प्राप्तौ हतानन्दं हतत्विषम् ।
वासुदेवोऽर्जुनश्चैव कृत्वा कर्म सुदुष्करम् ॥९॥
9. tataḥ svaśibiraṁ prāptau hatānandaṁ hatatviṣam ,
vāsudevo'rjunaścaiva kṛtvā karma suduṣkaram.
9. tataḥ sva-śibiram prāptau hata-ānandam hata-tviṣam
| vāsudevaḥ arjunaḥ ca eva kṛtvā karma su-duṣkaram
9. tataḥ vāsudevaḥ arjunaḥ ca eva su-duṣkaram karma
kṛtvā hata-ānandam hata-tviṣam sva-śibiram prāptau
9. Then, Vāsudeva (Krishna) and Arjuna, after having performed an exceedingly difficult deed (karma), arrived at their own camp, which they found devoid of joy and luster.
ध्वस्ताकारं समालक्ष्य शिबिरं परवीरहा ।
बीभत्सुरब्रवीत्कृष्णमस्वस्थहृदयस्ततः ॥१०॥
10. dhvastākāraṁ samālakṣya śibiraṁ paravīrahā ,
bībhatsurabravītkṛṣṇamasvasthahṛdayastataḥ.
10. dhvasta-ākāram samālakṣya śibiram para-vīra-hā |
bībhatsuḥ abravīt kṛṣṇam asvastha-hṛdayaḥ tataḥ
10. tataḥ para-vīra-hā bībhatsuḥ dhvasta-ākāram
śibiram samālakṣya asvastha-hṛdayaḥ kṛṣṇam abravīt
10. Then, the slayer of enemy heroes, Bibhatsu (Arjuna), having observed the camp with its dilapidated appearance, spoke to Krishna, his heart disturbed.
नाद्य नन्दन्ति तूर्याणि मङ्गल्यानि जनार्दन ।
मिश्रा दुन्दुभिनिर्घोषैः शङ्खाश्चाडम्बरैः सह ।
वीणा वा नाद्य वाद्यन्ते शम्यातालस्वनैः सह ॥११॥
11. nādya nandanti tūryāṇi maṅgalyāni janārdana ,
miśrā dundubhinirghoṣaiḥ śaṅkhāścāḍambaraiḥ saha ,
vīṇā vā nādya vādyante śamyātālasvanaiḥ saha.
11. na adya nandanti tūryāṇi maṅgalyāni
janārdana | miśrāḥ dundubhi-nirghoṣaiḥ
śaṅkhāḥ ca āḍambaraiḥ saha | vīṇāḥ vā na
adya vādyante śamyā-tāla-svanaiḥ saha
11. janārdana! adya maṅgalyāni tūryāṇi na
nandanti dundubhi-nirghoṣaiḥ ca āḍambaraiḥ
saha miśrāḥ śaṅkhāḥ (na nandanti) vā adya
śamyā-tāla-svanaiḥ saha vīṇāḥ na vādyante
11. O Janārdana (Krishna), today the auspicious trumpets no longer sound joyfully. The conch shells, which were once accompanied by the booming of drums and their own resonant clamor, are also silent. Nor are the vīṇās played today, accompanied by the sounds of clappers and hand-claps.
मङ्गल्यानि च गीतानि न गायन्ति पठन्ति च ।
स्तुतियुक्तानि रम्याणि ममानीकेषु बन्दिनः ॥१२॥
12. maṅgalyāni ca gītāni na gāyanti paṭhanti ca ,
stutiyuktāni ramyāṇi mamānīkeṣu bandinaḥ.
12. maṅgalyāni ca gītāni na gāyanti paṭhanti ca
stutiyuktāni ramyāṇi mama anīkeṣu bandinaḥ
12. mama anīkeṣu bandinaḥ maṅgalyāni gītāni ca
stutiyuktāni ramyāṇi ca na gāyanti na paṭhanti
12. In my armies, the bards neither sing nor recite auspicious songs, nor do they sing beautiful ones filled with praise.
योधाश्चापि हि मां दृष्ट्वा निवर्तन्ते ह्यधोमुखाः ।
कर्माणि च यथापूर्वं कृत्वा नाभिवदन्ति माम् ॥१३॥
13. yodhāścāpi hi māṁ dṛṣṭvā nivartante hyadhomukhāḥ ,
karmāṇi ca yathāpūrvaṁ kṛtvā nābhivadanti mām.
13. yodhāḥ ca api hi mām dṛṣṭvā nivartante hi adhomukhāḥ
karmāṇi ca yathāpūrvaṃ kṛtvā na abhivadanti mām
13. api hi yodhāḥ mām dṛṣṭvā adhomukhāḥ hi nivartante
ca yathāpūrvaṃ karmāṇi kṛtvā mām na abhivadanti
13. Even the warriors, seeing me, turn back with downcast faces. And having performed their actions (karma) as before, they do not greet me.
अपि स्वस्ति भवेदद्य भ्रातृभ्यो मम माधव ।
न हि शुध्यति मे भावो दृष्ट्वा स्वजनमाकुलम् ॥१४॥
14. api svasti bhavedadya bhrātṛbhyo mama mādhava ,
na hi śudhyati me bhāvo dṛṣṭvā svajanamākulam.
14. api svasti bhavet adya bhrātṛbhyaḥ mama mādhava
na hi śudhyati me bhāvaḥ dṛṣṭvā svajanam ākulam
14. mādhava api adya mama bhrātṛbhyaḥ svasti bhavet
hi ākulam svajanam dṛṣṭvā me bhāvaḥ na śudhyati
14. O Madhava, may there be welfare for my brothers today. Indeed, my state of mind (bhāva) does not become clear upon seeing my distressed kinsmen.
अपि पाञ्चालराजस्य विराटस्य च मानद ।
सर्वेषां चैव योधानां सामग्र्यं स्यान्ममाच्युत ॥१५॥
15. api pāñcālarājasya virāṭasya ca mānada ,
sarveṣāṁ caiva yodhānāṁ sāmagryaṁ syānmamācyuta.
15. api pāñcālarājasya virāṭasya ca mānada sarveṣām
ca eva yodhānām sāmagryam syāt mama acyuta
15. mānada acyuta api pāñcālarājasya virāṭasya ca
eva sarveṣām yodhānām ca mama sāmagryam syāt
15. O Giver of Honor, O Achyuta, may there be well-being for the king of Pañcāla, for Virāṭa, and indeed for all these warriors, and for me.
न च मामद्य सौभद्रः प्रहृष्टो भ्रातृभिः सह ।
रणादायान्तमुचितं प्रत्युद्याति हसन्निव ॥१६॥
16. na ca māmadya saubhadraḥ prahṛṣṭo bhrātṛbhiḥ saha ,
raṇādāyāntamucitaṁ pratyudyāti hasanniva.
16. na ca mām adya saubhadraḥ prahṛṣṭaḥ bhrātṛbhiḥ
saha | raṇāt āyāntam ucitaṃ pratyudyāti hasan iva
16. adya ca saubhadraḥ prahṛṣṭaḥ bhrātṛbhiḥ saha
raṇāt āyāntam mām ucitaṃ hasan iva na pratyudyāti
16. Today, Abhimanyu, the son of Subhadrā, accompanied by his joyful brothers, does not come forward, smiling, to greet me as is customary when I return from battle.
एवं संकथयन्तौ तौ प्रविष्टौ शिबिरं स्वकम् ।
ददृशाते भृशास्वस्थान्पाण्डवान्नष्टचेतसः ॥१७॥
17. evaṁ saṁkathayantau tau praviṣṭau śibiraṁ svakam ,
dadṛśāte bhṛśāsvasthānpāṇḍavānnaṣṭacetasaḥ.
17. evaṃ saṃkathayantau tau praviṣṭau śibiram svakām
| dadṛśāte bhṛśa-asvasthān pāṇḍavān naṣṭa-cetasaḥ
17. evaṃ saṃkathayantau tau svakām śibiram praviṣṭau.
bhṛśa-asvasthān naṣṭa-cetasaḥ pāṇḍavān dadṛśāte.
17. Thus conversing, the two of them entered their own camp. There, they beheld the Pāṇḍavas, profoundly distressed and having lost their composure.
दृष्ट्वा भ्रातॄंश्च पुत्रांश्च विमना वानरध्वजः ।
अपश्यंश्चैव सौभद्रमिदं वचनमब्रवीत् ॥१८॥
18. dṛṣṭvā bhrātṝṁśca putrāṁśca vimanā vānaradhvajaḥ ,
apaśyaṁścaiva saubhadramidaṁ vacanamabravīt.
18. dṛṣṭvā bhrātṝn ca putrān ca vimanāḥ vānaradhvajaḥ
| apaśyan ca eva saubhadram idam vacanam abravīt
18. vānaradhvajaḥ bhrātṝn ca putrān ca dṛṣṭvā vimanāḥ (abhūt).
saubhadram ca eva apaśyan idam vacanam abravīt.
18. Upon seeing his brothers and sons, Arjuna, whose banner bore the monkey emblem, became distraught. And not finding Abhimanyu, he uttered these words.
मुखवर्णोऽप्रसन्नो वः सर्वेषामेव लक्ष्यते ।
न चाभिमन्युं पश्यामि न च मां प्रतिनन्दथ ॥१९॥
19. mukhavarṇo'prasanno vaḥ sarveṣāmeva lakṣyate ,
na cābhimanyuṁ paśyāmi na ca māṁ pratinandatha.
19. mukhavarṇaḥ aprasannaḥ vaḥ sarveṣām eva lakṣyate
| na ca abhimanyum paśyāmi na ca mām pratinandatha
19. sarveṣām eva vaḥ mukhavarṇaḥ aprasannaḥ lakṣyate.
abhimanyum ca na paśyāmi,
mām ca na pratinandatha.
19. The expression on all your faces appears sorrowful. I do not see Abhimanyu, nor do you welcome me.
मया श्रुतश्च द्रोणेन चक्रव्यूहो विनिर्मितः ।
न च वस्तस्य भेत्तास्ति ऋते सौभद्रमाहवे ॥२०॥
20. mayā śrutaśca droṇena cakravyūho vinirmitaḥ ,
na ca vastasya bhettāsti ṛte saubhadramāhave.
20. mayā śrutaḥ ca droṇena cakravyūhaḥ vinirmitaḥ na
ca vaḥ tasya bhettā asti ṛte saubhadram āhave
20. mayā droṇena cakravyūhaḥ vinirmitaḥ ca śrutaḥ ca
vaḥ tasya bhettā ṛte saubhadram āhave na asti
20. I heard that Drona constructed the circular battle formation (cakravyūha). And there is no one among you capable of breaking it, except for Saubhadra in battle.
न चोपदिष्टस्तस्यासीन्मयानीकविनिर्गमः ।
कच्चिन्न बालो युष्माभिः परानीकं प्रवेशितः ॥२१॥
21. na copadiṣṭastasyāsīnmayānīkavinirgamaḥ ,
kaccinna bālo yuṣmābhiḥ parānīkaṁ praveśitaḥ.
21. na ca upadiṣṭaḥ tasya āsīt mayā anīkavinirgamaḥ
kaccit na bālaḥ yuṣmābhiḥ parānīkam praveśitaḥ
21. ca mayā tasya anīkavinirgamaḥ na upadiṣṭaḥ āsīt
kaccit na bālaḥ yuṣmābhiḥ parānīkam praveśitaḥ
21. And I did not teach him (Saubhadra) the way to exit the battle formation. I hope that boy was not made to enter the enemy army by you all?
भित्त्वानीकं महेष्वासः परेषां बहुशो युधि ।
कच्चिन्न निहतः शेते सौभद्रः परवीरहा ॥२२॥
22. bhittvānīkaṁ maheṣvāsaḥ pareṣāṁ bahuśo yudhi ,
kaccinna nihataḥ śete saubhadraḥ paravīrahā.
22. bhittvā anīkam mahāiṣvāsaḥ pareṣām bahuśaḥ yudhi
kaccit na nihataḥ śete saubhadraḥ paravīrahā
22. maheṣvāsaḥ paravīrahā saubhadraḥ yudhi pareṣām
anīkam bahuśaḥ bhittvā kaccit na nihataḥ śete
22. Having repeatedly broken through the enemies' army in battle, I hope Saubhadra, the slayer of enemy heroes, does not lie dead?
लोहिताक्षं महाबाहुं जातं सिंहमिवाद्रिषु ।
उपेन्द्रसदृशं ब्रूत कथमायोधने हतः ॥२३॥
23. lohitākṣaṁ mahābāhuṁ jātaṁ siṁhamivādriṣu ,
upendrasadṛśaṁ brūta kathamāyodhane hataḥ.
23. lohitākṣam mahābāhum jātam siṃham iva adriṣu
upendrasadṛśam brūta katham āyodhane hataḥ
23. lohitākṣam mahābāhum adriṣu siṃham iva jātam
upendrasadṛśam āyodhane katham hataḥ brūta
23. Tell me, how was that red-eyed, mighty-armed one, who was born like a lion in the mountains and resembled Upendra, killed in battle?
सुकुमारं महेष्वासं वासवस्यात्मजात्मजम् ।
सदा मम प्रियं ब्रूत कथमायोधने हतः ॥२४॥
24. sukumāraṁ maheṣvāsaṁ vāsavasyātmajātmajam ,
sadā mama priyaṁ brūta kathamāyodhane hataḥ.
24. sukumāram maheṣvāsam vāsavasya ātmajātmajam
sadā mama priyam brūta katham āyodhane hataḥ
24. mama sadā priyam sukumāram maheṣvāsam vāsavasya
ātmajātmajam āyodhane katham hataḥ brūta
24. Tell me, how was my ever-beloved, delicate, great archer, the grandson of Vasava (Indra), killed in battle?
वार्ष्णेयीदयितं शूरं मया सततलालितम् ।
अम्बायाश्च प्रियं नित्यं कोऽवधीत्कालचोदितः ॥२५॥
25. vārṣṇeyīdayitaṁ śūraṁ mayā satatalālitam ,
ambāyāśca priyaṁ nityaṁ ko'vadhītkālacoditaḥ.
25. vārṣṇeyīdayitam śūram mayā satatalālitam
ambāyāḥ ca priyam nityam kaḥ avadhīt kālacoditaḥ
25. kaḥ kālacoditaḥ vārṣṇeyīdayitam śūram mayā
satatalālitam ambāyāḥ ca nityam priyam avadhīt
25. Who, impelled by destiny (kāla), killed the brave hero, the beloved of Vrishni's daughter (Subhadra), whom I always cherished, and who was perpetually dear to his mother?
सदृशो वृष्णिसिंहस्य केशवस्य महात्मनः ।
विक्रमश्रुतमाहात्म्यैः कथमायोधने हतः ॥२६॥
26. sadṛśo vṛṣṇisiṁhasya keśavasya mahātmanaḥ ,
vikramaśrutamāhātmyaiḥ kathamāyodhane hataḥ.
26. sadṛśaḥ vṛṣṇisiṃhasya keśavasya mahātmanaḥ
vikramaśrutamāhātmyaiḥ katham āyodhane hataḥ
26. vṛṣṇisiṃhasya mahātmanaḥ keśavasya vikramaśrutamāhātmyaiḥ
sadṛśaḥ (saḥ) āyodhane katham hataḥ
26. How was he, who was equal to the great-souled Kesava (Krishna), the lion of the Vrishnis, in valor, learning, and greatness, killed in battle?
सुभद्रायाः प्रियं नित्यं द्रौपद्याः केशवस्य च ।
यदि पुत्रं न पश्यामि यास्यामि यमसादनम् ॥२७॥
27. subhadrāyāḥ priyaṁ nityaṁ draupadyāḥ keśavasya ca ,
yadi putraṁ na paśyāmi yāsyāmi yamasādanam.
27. subhadrāyāḥ priyam nityam draupadyāḥ keśavasya
ca yadi putram na paśyāmi yāsyāmi yamasādanam
27. yadi subhadrāyāḥ draupadyāḥ ca keśavasya nityam
priyam putram na paśyāmi (tarhi) yamasādanam yāsyāmi
27. If I do not see my son, who was always dear to Subhadra, Draupadi, and Kesava (Krishna), I shall go to the abode of Yama (yamasādana).
मृदुकुञ्चितकेशान्तं बालं बालमृगेक्षणम् ।
मत्तद्विरदविक्रान्तं शालपोतमिवोद्गतम् ॥२८॥
28. mṛdukuñcitakeśāntaṁ bālaṁ bālamṛgekṣaṇam ,
mattadviradavikrāntaṁ śālapotamivodgatam.
28. mṛdukuñcitakeśāntam bālam bālamṛgekṣaṇam
mattadviradavikrāntam śālapotam iva udgatam
28. bālam mṛdukuñcitakeśāntam bālamṛgekṣaṇam
mattadviradavikrāntam iva udgatam śālapotam
28. A child with softly curled hair, whose eyes resembled those of a young deer, courageous like a rutting elephant, and who had emerged like a young śāla tree.
स्मिताभिभाषिणं दान्तं गुरुवाक्यकरं सदा ।
बाल्येऽप्यबालकर्माणं प्रियवाक्यममत्सरम् ॥२९॥
29. smitābhibhāṣiṇaṁ dāntaṁ guruvākyakaraṁ sadā ,
bālye'pyabālakarmāṇaṁ priyavākyamamatsaram.

29. Always speaking with a smile, self-controlled, obedient to his teacher (guru)'s words, performing mature deeds even in childhood, speaking kindly, and free from envy.
महोत्साहं महाबाहुं दीर्घराजीवलोचनम् ।
भक्तानुकम्पिनं दान्तं न च नीचानुसारिणम् ॥३०॥
30. mahotsāhaṁ mahābāhuṁ dīrgharājīvalocanam ,
bhaktānukampinaṁ dāntaṁ na ca nīcānusāriṇam.
30. mahotsāham mahābāhum dīrgharājīvalocanam
bhaktānukampinam dāntam na ca nīcānusāriṇam

30. Greatly enthusiastic, mighty-armed, with long lotus-like eyes, compassionate towards his devotees, self-controlled, and not one who associates with or follows the lowly.
कृतज्ञं ज्ञानसंपन्नं कृतास्त्रमनिवर्तिनम् ।
युद्धाभिनन्दिनं नित्यं द्विषतामघवर्धनम् ॥३१॥
31. kṛtajñaṁ jñānasaṁpannaṁ kṛtāstramanivartinam ,
yuddhābhinandinaṁ nityaṁ dviṣatāmaghavardhanam.

yuddhābhinandinam nityam dviṣatām aghavardhanam

31. Grateful, endowed with knowledge, skilled in weaponry, never retreating, constantly delighting in battle, and one who amplifies the woes of his enemies.
स्वेषां प्रियहिते युक्तं पितॄणां जयगृद्धिनम् ।
न च पूर्वप्रहर्तारं संग्रामे नष्टसंभ्रमम् ।
यदि पुत्रं न पश्यामि यास्यामि यमसादनम् ॥३२॥
32. sveṣāṁ priyahite yuktaṁ pitṝṇāṁ jayagṛddhinam ,
na ca pūrvaprahartāraṁ saṁgrāme naṣṭasaṁbhramam ,
yadi putraṁ na paśyāmi yāsyāmi yamasādanam.

yamasādanam yāsyāmi.
32. If I do not see my son, who is committed to the welfare of his own people, eager for the victory of his ancestors, who never strikes first in battle, and who is fearless, then I will go to the abode of Yama.
सुललाटं सुकेशान्तं सुभ्र्वक्षिदशनच्छदम् ।
अपश्यतस्तद्वदनं का शान्तिर्हृदयस्य मे ॥३३॥
33. sulalāṭaṁ sukeśāntaṁ subhrvakṣidaśanacchadam ,
apaśyatastadvadanaṁ kā śāntirhṛdayasya me.
33. sulalāṭam sukeśāntam subhrvakṣidaśanacchadam
apaśyataḥ tat vadanam kā śāntiḥ hṛdayasya me
33. sulalāṭam sukeśāntam subhrvakṣidaśanacchadam

33. For me, who cannot see that face - with its beautiful forehead, lovely hair, exquisite eyebrows, eyes, and lips - what peace can there be for my heart?
तन्त्रीस्वनसुखं रम्यं पुंस्कोकिलसमध्वनिम् ।
अशृण्वतः स्वनं तस्य का शान्तिर्हृदयस्य मे ॥३४॥
34. tantrīsvanasukhaṁ ramyaṁ puṁskokilasamadhvanim ,
aśṛṇvataḥ svanaṁ tasya kā śāntirhṛdayasya me.
34. tantrīsvanasukham ramyam puṃskokilasamadhvanim
aśṛṇvataḥ svanam tasya kā śāntiḥ hṛdayasya me

34. For me, who cannot hear his delightful voice - which is as pleasing as the sound of a lute and resembles a male cuckoo's song - what peace can there be for my heart?
रूपं चाप्रतिरूपं तत्त्रिदशेष्वपि दुर्लभम् ।
अपश्यतोऽद्य वीरस्य का शान्तिर्हृदयस्य मे ॥३५॥
35. rūpaṁ cāpratirūpaṁ tattridaśeṣvapi durlabham ,
apaśyato'dya vīrasya kā śāntirhṛdayasya me.
35. rūpam ca apratirūpam tat tridaśeṣu api durlabham
apaśyataḥ adya vīrasya kā śāntiḥ hṛdayasya me
35. adya apratirūpam tat tridaśeṣu api durlabham ca
vīrasya rūpam apaśyataḥ me hṛdayasya kā śāntiḥ?
35. And today, for me, who cannot see that hero's peerless form - a beauty rare even among the gods - what peace can there be for my heart?
अभिवादनदक्षं तं पितॄणां वचने रतम् ।
नाद्याहं यदि पश्यामि का शान्तिर्हृदयस्य मे ॥३६॥
36. abhivādanadakṣaṁ taṁ pitṝṇāṁ vacane ratam ,
nādyāhaṁ yadi paśyāmi kā śāntirhṛdayasya me.
36. abhivādanadakṣam tam pitṝṇām vacane ratam na
adya aham yadi paśyāmi kā śāntiḥ hṛdayasya me
36. aham adya yadi abhivādanadakṣam pitṝṇām vacane ratam tam na paśyāmi,
me hṛdayasya kā śāntiḥ?
36. If today I do not see him, who was adept at salutations and devoted to the words of the ancestors, what peace can there be for my heart?
सुकुमारः सदा वीरो महार्हशयनोचितः ।
भूमावनाथवच्छेते नूनं नाथवतां वरः ॥३७॥
37. sukumāraḥ sadā vīro mahārhaśayanocitaḥ ,
bhūmāvanāthavacchete nūnaṁ nāthavatāṁ varaḥ.
37. sukumāraḥ sadā vīraḥ mahārhaśayanocitaḥ
bhūmau anāthavat śete nūnam nāthavatām varaḥ
37. yaḥ sadā sukumāraḥ vīraḥ mahārhaśayanocitaḥ (āsīt),
saḥ nūnam nāthavatām varaḥ (api) bhūmau anāthavat śete.
37. He who was always delicate, a hero, and accustomed to a luxurious bed, now surely lies on the ground like an orphan, though he was the foremost among those who had protectors.
शयानं समुपासन्ति यं पुरा परमस्त्रियः ।
तमद्य विप्रविद्धाङ्गमुपासन्त्यशिवाः शिवाः ॥३८॥
38. śayānaṁ samupāsanti yaṁ purā paramastriyaḥ ,
tamadya vipraviddhāṅgamupāsantyaśivāḥ śivāḥ.
38. śayānam samupāsanti yam purā paramastriyaḥ
tam adya vipraviddhāṅgam upāsanti aśivāḥ śivāḥ
38. yam (puruṣam) purā paramastriyaḥ śayānam samupāsanti (sma),
tam vipraviddhāṅgam (puruṣam) adya aśivāḥ śivāḥ upāsanti.
38. Whom noble ladies formerly attended while he was resting, him today, whose body is torn apart, inauspicious jackals attend.
यः पुरा बोध्यते सुप्तः सूतमागधबन्दिभिः ।
बोधयन्त्यद्य तं नूनं श्वापदा विकृतैः स्वरैः ॥३९॥
39. yaḥ purā bodhyate suptaḥ sūtamāgadhabandibhiḥ ,
bodhayantyadya taṁ nūnaṁ śvāpadā vikṛtaiḥ svaraiḥ.
39. yaḥ purā bodhyate suptaḥ sūtamāgadhabandibhiḥ
bodhayanti adya tam nūnam śvāpadāḥ vikṛtaiḥ svaraiḥ
39. yaḥ suptaḥ (san) purā sūtamāgadhabandibhiḥ bodhyate (sma),
adya nūnam śvāpadāḥ vikṛtaiḥ svaraiḥ tam bodhayanti.
39. He who was formerly awakened from sleep by charioteers, bards, and panegyrists, him today, wild beasts surely awaken with their distorted cries.
छत्रच्छायासमुचितं तस्य तद्वदनं शुभम् ।
नूनमद्य रजोध्वस्तं रणे रेणुः करिष्यति ॥४०॥
40. chatracchāyāsamucitaṁ tasya tadvadanaṁ śubham ,
nūnamadya rajodhvastaṁ raṇe reṇuḥ kariṣyati.
40. chatracchāyāsamucitam tasya tat vadanam śubham
nūnam adya rajodhvastam raṇe reṇuḥ kariṣyati
40. tasya chatracchāyāsamucitam śubham tat vadanam
nūnam adya raṇe reṇuḥ rajodhvastam kariṣyati
40. That beautiful face of his, so accustomed to the shade of an umbrella, will surely be covered with dust today in battle by the battlefield dust.
हा पुत्रकावितृप्तस्य सततं पुत्रदर्शने ।
भाग्यहीनस्य कालेन यथा मे नीयसे बलात् ॥४१॥
41. hā putrakāvitṛptasya satataṁ putradarśane ,
bhāgyahīnasya kālena yathā me nīyase balāt.

bhāgyahīnasya kālena yathā me nīyase balāt
41. hā putrakau satatam putradarśane atṛptasya

41. Alas, my sons! You are being forcibly taken away from me by Time (kāla), from me, the unfortunate one who was never sated with the sight of his sons.
साद्य संयमनी नूनं सदा सुकृतिनां गतिः ।
स्वभाभिर्भासिता रम्या त्वयात्यर्थं विराजते ॥४२॥
42. sādya saṁyamanī nūnaṁ sadā sukṛtināṁ gatiḥ ,
svabhābhirbhāsitā ramyā tvayātyarthaṁ virājate.
42. sā adya saṃyamanī nūnam sadā sukṛtinām gatiḥ
svabhābhiḥ bhāsitā ramyā tvayā atyartham virājate
42. sadā sukṛtinām gatiḥ sā saṃyamanī nūnam adya
tvayā atyartham svabhābhiḥ bhāsitā ramyā virājate
42. Indeed, today Saṃyamanī (the city of restraint), the eternal destination of the virtuous, surely shines exceedingly beautiful, illuminated by its own splendor through you.
नूनं वैवस्वतश्च त्वा वरुणश्च प्रियातिथिः ।
शतक्रतुर्धनेशश्च प्राप्तमर्चन्त्यभीरुकम् ॥४३॥
43. nūnaṁ vaivasvataśca tvā varuṇaśca priyātithiḥ ,
śatakraturdhaneśaśca prāptamarcantyabhīrukam.
43. nūnam vaivasvataḥ ca tvā varuṇaḥ ca priyātithiḥ |
śatakratuḥ dhaneśaḥ ca prāptam arcanti abhīrukam
43. nūnam vaivasvataḥ ca varuṇaḥ ca priyātithiḥ śatakratuḥ
ca dhaneśaḥ ca tvā abhīrukam prāptam arcanti
43. Indeed, Yama (Vaivasvata), Varuna, the gracious host, Indra (Śatakratu), and Kubera (Dhaneśa) will certainly worship you, who are fearless and have come.
एवं विलप्य बहुधा भिन्नपोतो वणिग्यथा ।
दुःखेन महताविष्टो युधिष्ठिरमपृच्छत ॥४४॥
44. evaṁ vilapya bahudhā bhinnapoto vaṇigyathā ,
duḥkhena mahatāviṣṭo yudhiṣṭhiramapṛcchata.
44. evam vilapya bahudhā bhinna-potaḥ vaṇik yathā
duḥkhena mahatā āviṣṭaḥ yudhiṣṭhiram apṛcchata
44. yathā bhinna-potaḥ vaṇik evam bahudhā vilapya,
mahatā duḥkhena āviṣṭaḥ yudhiṣṭhiram apṛcchata
44. Just as a merchant whose ship is broken laments in many ways, so he, overcome by great sorrow, questioned Yudhiṣṭhira.
कच्चित्स कदनं कृत्वा परेषां पाण्डुनन्दन ।
स्वर्गतोऽभिमुखः संख्ये युध्यमानो नरर्षभः ॥४५॥
45. kaccitsa kadanaṁ kṛtvā pareṣāṁ pāṇḍunandana ,
svargato'bhimukhaḥ saṁkhye yudhyamāno nararṣabhaḥ.
45. kaccit saḥ kadanam kṛtvā pareṣām pāṇḍu-nandana
svarga-gataḥ abhimukhaḥ saṅkhye yudhyamānaḥ nararṣabhaḥ
45. pāṇḍu-nandana,
kaccit saḥ nararṣabhaḥ pareṣām kadanam kṛtvā,
saṅkhye abhimukhaḥ yudhyamānaḥ svarga-gataḥ
45. O son of Pāṇḍu, I hope that best among men, having wrought destruction upon the enemies, fighting in battle and facing the foe, attained heaven.
स नूनं बहुभिर्यत्तैर्युध्यमानो नरर्षभैः ।
असहायः सहायार्थी मामनुध्यातवान्ध्रुवम् ॥४६॥
46. sa nūnaṁ bahubhiryattairyudhyamāno nararṣabhaiḥ ,
asahāyaḥ sahāyārthī māmanudhyātavāndhruvam.
46. saḥ nūnam bahubhiḥ yattaiḥ yudhyamānaḥ nararṣabhaiḥ
asahāyaḥ sahāya-arthī mām anudhātavān dhruvam
46. nūnam saḥ asahāyaḥ sahāya-arthī bahubhiḥ yattaiḥ
nararṣabhaiḥ yudhyamānaḥ dhruvam mām anudhātavān
46. Surely he, fighting against many striving warrior chiefs, helpless and seeking aid, must certainly have thought of me.
पीड्यमानः शरैर्बालस्तात साध्वभिधाव माम् ।
इति विप्रलपन्मन्ये नृशंसैर्बहुभिर्हतः ॥४७॥
47. pīḍyamānaḥ śarairbālastāta sādhvabhidhāva mām ,
iti vipralapanmanye nṛśaṁsairbahubhirhataḥ.
47. pīḍyamānaḥ śaraiḥ bālaḥ tāta sādhu abhidhāva mām
iti vipralapan manye nṛśaṃsaiḥ bahubhiḥ hataḥ
47. manye bālaḥ śaraiḥ pīḍyamānaḥ,
"tāta mām sādhu abhidhāva!" iti vipralapan,
bahubhiḥ nṛśaṃsaiḥ hataḥ
47. "O father, I am tormented by arrows! Quickly rush to me!" - lamenting thus, I believe that young one was slain by many cruel individuals.
अथ वा मत्प्रसूतश्च स्वस्रीयो माधवस्य च ।
सुभद्रायां च संभूतो नैवं वक्तुमिहार्हति ॥४८॥
48. atha vā matprasūtaśca svasrīyo mādhavasya ca ,
subhadrāyāṁ ca saṁbhūto naivaṁ vaktumihārhati.
48. atha vā matprasūtaḥ ca svasrīyaḥ mādhavasya ca
subhadrāyām ca saṃbhūtaḥ na evam vaktum iha arhati
48. atha vā matprasūtaḥ ca mādhavasya ca svasrīyaḥ
subhadrāyām ca saṃbhūtaḥ na evam vaktum iha arhati
48. Or else, being born from me, and also the nephew of Mādhava (Krishna), and born of Subhadrā, he ought not to speak in this way here.
वज्रसारमयं नूनं हृदयं सुदृढं मम ।
अपश्यतो दीर्घबाहुं रक्ताक्षं यन्न दीर्यते ॥४९॥
49. vajrasāramayaṁ nūnaṁ hṛdayaṁ sudṛḍhaṁ mama ,
apaśyato dīrghabāhuṁ raktākṣaṁ yanna dīryate.
49. vajrasāramayam nūnam hṛdayam sudṛḍham mama
apaśyataḥ dīrghabāhum raktākṣam yat na dīryate
49. nūnam mama sudṛḍham vajrasāramayam hṛdayam
yat dīrghabāhum raktākṣam apaśyataḥ na dīryate
49. Surely, my exceedingly firm heart, which must be made of the essence of a thunderbolt, does not break even when I fail to see him - the one with long arms and red eyes.
कथं बाले महेष्वासे नृशंसा मर्मभेदिनः ।
स्वस्रीये वासुदेवस्य मम पुत्रेऽक्षिपञ्शरान् ॥५०॥
50. kathaṁ bāle maheṣvāse nṛśaṁsā marmabhedinaḥ ,
svasrīye vāsudevasya mama putre'kṣipañśarān.
50. katham bāle maheṣvāse nṛśaṃsāḥ marmabhedinaḥ
svasrīye vāsudevasya mama putre akṣipan śarān
50. katham nṛśaṃsāḥ marmabhedinaḥ mama putre bāle
maheṣvāse vāsudevasya svasrīye śarān akṣipan
50. How could those cruel, heart-piercing villains shoot arrows at my son, that young, great archer, the nephew of Vāsudeva (Krishna)?
यो मां नित्यमदीनात्मा प्रत्युद्गम्याभिनन्दति ।
उपयान्तं रिपून्हत्वा सोऽद्य मां किं न पश्यति ॥५१॥
51. yo māṁ nityamadīnātmā pratyudgamyābhinandati ,
upayāntaṁ ripūnhatvā so'dya māṁ kiṁ na paśyati.
51. yaḥ mām nityam adīnātmā pratyudgamya abhinandati
upayāntam ripūn hatvā saḥ adya mām kim na paśyati
51. yaḥ adīnātmā nityam mām pratyudgamya abhinandati
ripūn hatvā upayāntam saḥ adya mām kim na paśyati
51. Why does he, the noble-minded one, who always used to come forth to meet and greet me after killing enemies (and being in a state of approaching or returning), not see me today?
नूनं स पतितः शेते धरण्यां रुधिरोक्षितः ।
शोभयन्मेदिनीं गात्रैरादित्य इव पातितः ॥५२॥
52. nūnaṁ sa patitaḥ śete dharaṇyāṁ rudhirokṣitaḥ ,
śobhayanmedinīṁ gātrairāditya iva pātitaḥ.
52. nūnam sa patitaḥ śete dharaṇyām rudhirokṣitaḥ
śobhayan medinīm gātraiḥ ādityaḥ iva pātitaḥ
52. sa nūnam patitaḥ rudhirokṣitaḥ dharaṇyām śete.
pātitaḥ ādityaḥ iva (saḥ) gātraiḥ medinīm śobhayan (aste).
52. Surely, he lies fallen on the ground, covered in blood, adorning the earth with his body, like a sun struck down.
रणे विनिहतं श्रुत्वा शोकार्ता वै विनंक्ष्यति ।
सुभद्रा वक्ष्यते किं मामभिमन्युमपश्यती ।
द्रौपदी चैव दुःखार्ते ते च वक्ष्यामि किं न्वहम् ॥५३॥
53. raṇe vinihataṁ śrutvā śokārtā vai vinaṁkṣyati ,
subhadrā vakṣyate kiṁ māmabhimanyumapaśyatī ,
draupadī caiva duḥkhārte te ca vakṣyāmi kiṁ nvaham.
53. raṇe vinihatam śrutvā śokārtā vai
vinaṅkṣyati subhadrā vakṣyate kim mām
abhimanyum apaśyatī draupadī ca eva
duḥkhārte te ca vakṣyāmi kim nu aham
53. raṇe vinihatam (tam) śrutvā śokārtā subhadrā vai vinaṅkṣyati.
abhimanyum apaśyatī subhadrā mām kim vakṣyate? ca duḥkhārte te draupadī ca aham kim nu vakṣyāmi.
53. Upon hearing that he was killed in battle, Subhadrā, overcome with grief, will surely perish. What will Subhadrā say to me when she does not see Abhimanyu? And what indeed shall I say to those two, Draupadī and Subhadrā, who are afflicted with sorrow?
वज्रसारमयं नूनं हृदयं यन्न यास्यति ।
सहस्रधा वधूं दृष्ट्वा रुदतीं शोककर्शिताम् ॥५४॥
54. vajrasāramayaṁ nūnaṁ hṛdayaṁ yanna yāsyati ,
sahasradhā vadhūṁ dṛṣṭvā rudatīṁ śokakarśitām.
54. vajrasāramayam nūnam hṛdayam yat na yāsyati
sahasradhā vadhūm dṛṣṭvā rudatīm śokakarśitām
54. nūnam,
vadhūm rudatīm śokakarśitām dṛṣṭvā api sahasradhā na yāsyati yat hṛdayam,
tat vajrasāramayam (asti).
54. Surely, that heart which does not break into a thousand pieces, even after seeing the daughter-in-law weeping and emaciated by grief, is made of diamond-like strength.
हृष्टानां धार्तराष्ट्राणां सिंहनादो मया श्रुतः ।
युयुत्सुश्चापि कृष्णेन श्रुतो वीरानुपालभन् ॥५५॥
55. hṛṣṭānāṁ dhārtarāṣṭrāṇāṁ siṁhanādo mayā śrutaḥ ,
yuyutsuścāpi kṛṣṇena śruto vīrānupālabhan.
55. hṛṣṭānām dhārtarāṣṭrāṇām siṃhanādaḥ mayā śrutaḥ
yuyutsuḥ ca api kṛṣṇena śrutaḥ vīrān upālabhan
55. mayā hṛṣṭānām dhārtarāṣṭrāṇām siṃhanādaḥ śrutaḥ (āsīt).
ca api kṛṣṇena vīrān upālabhan yuyutsuḥ śrutaḥ (āsīt).
55. By me was heard the lion's roar of the jubilant sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra (Kauravas). And Yuyutsu, rebuking the warriors, was also heard by Kṛṣṇa.
अशक्नुवन्तो बीभत्सुं बालं हत्वा महारथाः ।
किं नदध्वमधर्मज्ञाः पार्थे वै दृश्यतां बलम् ॥५६॥
56. aśaknuvanto bībhatsuṁ bālaṁ hatvā mahārathāḥ ,
kiṁ nadadhvamadharmajñāḥ pārthe vai dṛśyatāṁ balam.
56. aśaknuvantaḥ bībhatsuṃ bālaṃ hatvā mahārathāḥ kim
nadadhvam adharmajñāḥ pārthe vai dṛśyatām balam
56. adharmjñāḥ mahārathāḥ aśaknuvantaḥ bībhatsuṃ bālaṃ
hatvā kim nadadhvam vai pārthe balam dṛśyatām
56. O great charioteers, you who are ignorant of natural law (dharma)! Having killed the despicable child (Abhimanyu), why do you roar? Indeed, let Pārtha's (Arjuna's) strength be seen!
किं तयोर्विप्रियं कृत्वा केशवार्जुनयोर्मृधे ।
सिंहवन्नदत प्रीताः शोककाल उपस्थिते ॥५७॥
57. kiṁ tayorvipriyaṁ kṛtvā keśavārjunayormṛdhe ,
siṁhavannadata prītāḥ śokakāla upasthite.
57. kim tayoḥ vipriyaṃ kṛtvā keśavārjunayoḥ mṛdhe
siṃhavat nadata prītāḥ śokakāle upasthite
57. kim keśavārjunayoḥ tayoḥ mṛdhe vipriyaṃ kṛtvā
prītāḥ siṃhavat nadata śokakāle upasthite
57. Having committed an unfriendly act against Kṛṣṇa and Arjuna in battle, why do you roar like lions, delighted, when the time of sorrow (for you) has arrived?
आगमिष्यति वः क्षिप्रं फलं पापस्य कर्मणः ।
अधर्मो हि कृतस्तीव्रः कथं स्यादफलश्चिरम् ॥५८॥
58. āgamiṣyati vaḥ kṣipraṁ phalaṁ pāpasya karmaṇaḥ ,
adharmo hi kṛtastīvraḥ kathaṁ syādaphalaściram.
58. āgamiṣyati vaḥ kṣipraṃ phalaṃ pāpasya karmaṇaḥ
adharmaḥ hi kṛtaḥ tīvraḥ kathaṃ syāt aphalaḥ ciram
58. pāpasya karmaṇaḥ phalaṃ vaḥ kṣipraṃ āgamiṣyati hi
tīvraḥ kṛtaḥ adharmaḥ kathaṃ ciram aphalaḥ syāt
58. The result (phala) of your sinful action (karma) will quickly come to you. For how can an intense violation of natural law (dharma), once committed, remain without consequence for long?
इति तान्प्रति भाषन्वै वैश्यापुत्रो महामतिः ।
अपायाच्छस्त्रमुत्सृज्य कोपदुःखसमन्वितः ॥५९॥
59. iti tānprati bhāṣanvai vaiśyāputro mahāmatiḥ ,
apāyācchastramutsṛjya kopaduḥkhasamanvitaḥ.
59. iti tān prati bhāṣan vai vaiśyāputraḥ mahāmatiḥ
apāyāt śastram utsṛjya kopaduḥkhasamanvitaḥ

59. Thus, the great-minded son of the Vaiśya woman (Yuyutsu), indeed speaking to them, departed, having abandoned his weapon and filled with anger and sorrow.
किमर्थमेतन्नाख्यातं त्वया कृष्ण रणे मम ।
अधक्ष्यं तानहं सर्वांस्तदा क्रूरान्महारथान् ॥६०॥
60. kimarthametannākhyātaṁ tvayā kṛṣṇa raṇe mama ,
adhakṣyaṁ tānahaṁ sarvāṁstadā krūrānmahārathān.
60. kimartham etat na ākhyātam tvayā kṛṣṇa raṇe mama
| adhakṣyam tān aham sarvān tadā krūrān mahārathān
60. kṛṣṇa tvayā raṇe mama etat kimartham na ākhyātam
tadā aham tān sarvān krūrān mahārathān adhakṣyam
60. O Kṛṣṇa, why was this not revealed to me by you during the battle? Had I known, I would have then destroyed all those cruel, great charioteers.
निगृह्य वासुदेवस्तं पुत्राधिभिरभिप्लुतम् ।
मैवमित्यब्रवीत्कृष्णस्तीव्रशोकसमन्वितम् ॥६१॥
61. nigṛhya vāsudevastaṁ putrādhibhirabhiplutam ,
maivamityabravītkṛṣṇastīvraśokasamanvitam.
61. nigṛhya vāsudevaḥ tam putrādhibhiḥ abhiplutam |
mā evam iti abravīt kṛṣṇaḥ tīvraśokasamānvitam
61. vāsudevaḥ kṛṣṇaḥ putrādhibhiḥ abhiplutam
tīvraśokasamānvitam tam nigṛhya 'mā evam' iti abravīt
61. Vasudeva (Kṛṣṇa), having restrained him (Arjuna), who was overwhelmed by grief (ādhi) for his sons, spoke to that one afflicted with intense sorrow (śoka), saying, 'Do not be like this.'
सर्वेषामेष वै पन्थाः शूराणामनिवर्तिनाम् ।
क्षत्रियाणां विशेषेण येषां युद्धेन जीविका ॥६२॥
62. sarveṣāmeṣa vai panthāḥ śūrāṇāmanivartinām ,
kṣatriyāṇāṁ viśeṣeṇa yeṣāṁ yuddhena jīvikā.
62. sarveṣām eṣaḥ vai panthāḥ śūrāṇām anivartinām
| kṣatriyāṇām viśeṣeṇa yeṣām yuddhena jīvikā
62. eṣaḥ vai sarveṣām anivartinām śūrāṇām panthāḥ
viśeṣeṇa kṣatriyāṇām yeṣām yuddhena jīvikā
62. This, indeed, is the path for all heroes who do not retreat, and especially for kshatriyas whose livelihood is by means of battle.
एषा वै युध्यमानानां शूराणामनिवर्तिनाम् ।
विहिता धर्मशास्त्रज्ञैर्गतिर्गतिमतां वर ॥६३॥
63. eṣā vai yudhyamānānāṁ śūrāṇāmanivartinām ,
vihitā dharmaśāstrajñairgatirgatimatāṁ vara.
63. eṣā vai yudhyamānānām śūrāṇām anivartinām |
vihitā dharmaśāstrajñaiḥ gatiḥ gatimatām vara
63. gatimatām vara ! eṣā vai yudhyamānānām
anivartinām śūrāṇām gatiḥ dharmaśāstrajñaiḥ vihitā
63. O best among those who are destined (gatimatām), this indeed is the path (gati) ordained by those who know the natural law (dharma) scriptures (dharmaśāstrajñaiḥ) for heroes who are fighting and do not retreat.
ध्रुवं युद्धे हि मरणं शूराणामनिवर्तिनाम् ।
गतः पुण्यकृतां लोकानभिमन्युर्न संशयः ॥६४॥
64. dhruvaṁ yuddhe hi maraṇaṁ śūrāṇāmanivartinām ,
gataḥ puṇyakṛtāṁ lokānabhimanyurna saṁśayaḥ.
64. dhruvam yuddhe hi maraṇam śūrāṇām anivartinām
gataḥ puṇyakṛtām lokān abhimanyuḥ na saṃśayaḥ
64. yuddhe anivartinām śūrāṇām maraṇam dhruvam hi
abhimanyuḥ puṇyakṛtām lokān gataḥ na saṃśayaḥ
64. For heroes who do not retreat in battle, death is certainly destined. Abhimanyu has undoubtedly gone to the worlds of those who performed meritorious deeds.
एतच्च सर्ववीराणां काङ्क्षितं भरतर्षभ ।
संग्रामेऽभिमुखा मृत्युं प्रप्नुयामेति मानद ॥६५॥
65. etacca sarvavīrāṇāṁ kāṅkṣitaṁ bharatarṣabha ,
saṁgrāme'bhimukhā mṛtyuṁ prapnuyāmeti mānada.
65. etat ca sarvavīrāṇām kāṅkṣitam bharatarṣabha
saṃgrāme abhimukhāḥ mṛtyum prāpnuyāma iti mānada
65. bharatarṣabha mānada etat ca sarvavīrāṇām
kāṅkṣitam saṃgrāme abhimukhāḥ mṛtyum prāpnuyāma iti
65. And this, O best of Bharatas, is desired by all heroes, "May we attain death while facing it in battle," O giver of honor.
स च वीरान्रणे हत्वा राजपुत्रान्महाबलान् ।
वीरैराकाङ्क्षितं मृत्युं संप्राप्तोऽभिमुखो रणे ॥६६॥
66. sa ca vīrānraṇe hatvā rājaputrānmahābalān ,
vīrairākāṅkṣitaṁ mṛtyuṁ saṁprāpto'bhimukho raṇe.
66. saḥ ca vīrān raṇe hatvā rājaputrān mahābalān vīraiḥ
ākāṅkṣitam mṛtyum saṃprāptaḥ abhimukhaḥ raṇe
66. saḥ ca rane vīrān mahābalān rājaputrān hatvā,
raṇe abhimukhaḥ vīraiḥ ākāṅkṣitam mṛtyum saṃprāptaḥ
66. And he, having slain mighty princes and brave warriors in battle, attained the death desired by heroes, facing it directly in battle.
मा शुचः पुरुषव्याघ्र पूर्वैरेष सनातनः ।
धर्मकृद्भिः कृतो धर्मः क्षत्रियाणां रणे क्षयः ॥६७॥
67. mā śucaḥ puruṣavyāghra pūrvaireṣa sanātanaḥ ,
dharmakṛdbhiḥ kṛto dharmaḥ kṣatriyāṇāṁ raṇe kṣayaḥ.
67. mā śucaḥ puruṣavyāghra pūrvaiḥ eṣaḥ sanātanaḥ

67. Do not grieve, O tiger among men, for this eternal (sanātana) intrinsic nature (dharma) has been established by those who uphold the natural law (dharma): that kṣatriyas meet their demise in battle.
इमे ते भ्रातरः सर्वे दीना भरतसत्तम ।
त्वयि शोकसमाविष्टे नृपाश्च सुहृदस्तव ॥६८॥
68. ime te bhrātaraḥ sarve dīnā bharatasattama ,
tvayi śokasamāviṣṭe nṛpāśca suhṛdastava.
68. ime te bhrātaraḥ sarve dīnā bharatasattama
tvayi śokasāmāviṣṭe nṛpāḥ ca suhṛdaḥ tava
68. bharatasattama te ime sarve bhrātaraḥ dīnāḥ

68. O best of the Bharatas (bharatasattama), all these brothers of yours are distressed, as are your kings and friends, while you are completely overcome by sorrow.
एतांस्त्वं वचसा साम्ना समाश्वासय मानद ।
विदितं वेदितव्यं ते न शोकं कर्तुमर्हसि ॥६९॥
69. etāṁstvaṁ vacasā sāmnā samāśvāsaya mānada ,
viditaṁ veditavyaṁ te na śokaṁ kartumarhasi.
69. etān tvam vacasā sāmnā samāśvāsaya mānada
viditam veditavyam te na śokam kartum arhasi
69. mānada tvam etān sāmnā vacasā samāśvāsaya.
te veditavyam viditam na śokam kartum arhasi
69. O bestower of honor (mānada), console these (people) with gentle words. All that is to be known is already known to you; you ought not to grieve.
एवमाश्वासितः पार्थः कृष्णेनाद्भुतकर्मणा ।
ततोऽब्रवीत्तदा भ्रातॄन्सर्वान्पार्थः सगद्गदान् ॥७०॥
70. evamāśvāsitaḥ pārthaḥ kṛṣṇenādbhutakarmaṇā ,
tato'bravīttadā bhrātṝnsarvānpārthaḥ sagadgadān.
70. evam āśvāsitaḥ pārthaḥ kṛṣṇena adbhutakarmaṇā tataḥ
abravīt tadā bhrātṝn sarvān pārthaḥ sagadgadān
70. adbhutakarmaṇā kṛṣṇena evam āśvāsitaḥ pārthaḥ,
tataḥ tadā pārthaḥ sagadgadān sarvān bhrātṝn abravīt
70. Thus consoled by Kṛṣṇa, who performs wondrous deeds, Pārtha then spoke at that moment to all his brothers, who were choked with emotion.
स दीर्घबाहुः पृथ्वंसो दीर्घराजीवलोचनः ।
अभिमन्युर्यथा वृत्तः श्रोतुमिच्छाम्यहं तथा ॥७१॥
71. sa dīrghabāhuḥ pṛthvaṁso dīrgharājīvalocanaḥ ,
abhimanyuryathā vṛttaḥ śrotumicchāmyahaṁ tathā.
71. saḥ dīrghabāhuḥ pṛthvaṃsaḥ dīrgharājīvalocanaḥ
abhimanyuḥ yathā vṛttaḥ śrotum icchāmi aham tathā
71. aham śrotum icchāmi tathā yathā saḥ dīrghabāhuḥ
pṛthvaṃsaḥ dīrgharājīvalocanaḥ abhimanyuḥ vṛttaḥ
71. I wish to hear precisely how Abhimanyu, the one with long arms, broad shoulders, and long, lotus-like eyes, met his fate.
सनागस्यन्दनहयान्द्रक्ष्यध्वं निहतान्मया ।
संग्रामे सानुबन्धांस्तान्मम पुत्रस्य वैरिणः ॥७२॥
72. sanāgasyandanahayāndrakṣyadhvaṁ nihatānmayā ,
saṁgrāme sānubandhāṁstānmama putrasya vairiṇaḥ.
72. sa-nāga-syandana-hayān drakṣyadhvam nihatān mayā
saṃgrāme sa-anubandhān tān mama putrasya vairiṇaḥ
72. yūyam (implied) mama putrasya tān sa-nāga-syandana-hayān
sa-anubandhān vairiṇaḥ mayā saṃgrāme nihatān drakṣyadhvam
72. You will see those enemies of my son, along with their elephants, chariots, horses, and followers, slain by me in battle.
कथं च वः कृतास्त्राणां सर्वेषां शस्त्रपाणिनाम् ।
सौभद्रो निधनं गच्छेद्वज्रिणापि समागतः ॥७३॥
73. kathaṁ ca vaḥ kṛtāstrāṇāṁ sarveṣāṁ śastrapāṇinām ,
saubhadro nidhanaṁ gacchedvajriṇāpi samāgataḥ.
73. katham ca vaḥ kṛta-astrāṇām sarveṣām śastra-pāṇinām
saubhadraḥ nidhanam gacchet vajriṇā api sam-ā-gataḥ
73. vaḥ sarveṣām kṛta-astrāṇām śastra-pāṇinām

73. How then could Abhimanyu (Saubhadra) have met his demise (nidhanam), even if he were accompanied by Indra, when all of you, skilled in weapons and bearing arms, were present?
यद्येवमहमज्ञास्यमशक्तान्रक्षणे मम ।
पुत्रस्य पाण्डुपाञ्चालान्मया गुप्तो भवेत्ततः ॥७४॥
74. yadyevamahamajñāsyamaśaktānrakṣaṇe mama ,
putrasya pāṇḍupāñcālānmayā gupto bhavettataḥ.
74. yadi evam aham ajñāsyam aśaktān rakṣaṇe mama
putrasya pāṇḍu-pāñcālān mayā guptaḥ bhavet tataḥ
74. yadi aham evam mama putrasya rakṣaṇe pāṇḍu-pāñcālān aśaktān ajñāsyam,
tataḥ (saḥ - implied) mayā guptaḥ bhavet.
74. If I had known that the Pāṇḍavas and Pāñcālas were incapable of protecting my son, then he would have been protected by me.
कथं च वो रथस्थानां शरवर्षाणि मुञ्चताम् ।
नीतोऽभिमन्युर्निधनं कदर्थीकृत्य वः परैः ॥७५॥
75. kathaṁ ca vo rathasthānāṁ śaravarṣāṇi muñcatām ,
nīto'bhimanyurnidhanaṁ kadarthīkṛtya vaḥ paraiḥ.
75. katham ca vaḥ ratha-sthānām śara-varṣāṇi muñcatām
nītaḥ abhimanyuḥ nidhanam kadartha-ī-kṛtya vaḥ paraiḥ
75. vaḥ ratha-sthānām śara-varṣāṇi muñcatām
(satsu - implied: being present) Abhimanyuḥ
paraiḥ vaḥ kadartha-ī-kṛtya nidhanam
katham ca nītaḥ (abhūt - implied: was)?
75. How then was Abhimanyu brought to his demise (nidhanam) by the enemies, after they had humiliated you, while all of you, standing on your chariots, were releasing showers of arrows?
अहो वः पौरुषं नास्ति न च वोऽस्ति पराक्रमः ।
यत्राभिमन्युः समरे पश्यतां वो निपातितः ॥७६॥
76. aho vaḥ pauruṣaṁ nāsti na ca vo'sti parākramaḥ ,
yatrābhimanyuḥ samare paśyatāṁ vo nipātitaḥ.
76. aho vaḥ pauruṣam na asti na ca vaḥ asti parākramaḥ
yatra abhimanyuḥ samare paśyatām vaḥ nipātitaḥ
76. aho vaḥ pauruṣam na asti ca vaḥ parākramaḥ na asti
yatra vaḥ paśyatām samare abhimanyuḥ nipātitaḥ
76. Alas! You have neither valor (pauruṣa) nor prowess, given that Abhimanyu was struck down in battle while you watched.
आत्मानमेव गर्हेयं यदहं वः सुदुर्बलान् ।
युष्मानाज्ञाय निर्यातो भीरूनकृतनिश्रमान् ॥७७॥
77. ātmānameva garheyaṁ yadahaṁ vaḥ sudurbalān ,
yuṣmānājñāya niryāto bhīrūnakṛtaniśramān.
77. ātmānam eva garheyam yat aham vaḥ sudurbalān
yuṣmān ājñāya niryātaḥ bhīrūn akṛtaniśramān
77. aham yuṣmān sudurbalān bhīrūn akṛtaniśramān
vaḥ ājñāya niryātaḥ yat ātmānam eva garheyam
77. I should indeed blame myself (ātman) for having set out, knowing you all to be extremely weak, timid, and untrained.
आहोस्विद्भूषणार्थाय वर्मशस्त्रायुधानि वः ।
वाचश्च वक्तुं संसत्सु मम पुत्रमरक्षताम् ॥७८॥
78. āhosvidbhūṣaṇārthāya varmaśastrāyudhāni vaḥ ,
vācaśca vaktuṁ saṁsatsu mama putramarakṣatām.
78. āhosvit bhūṣaṇārthāya varmaśastrāyudhāni vaḥ
vācaḥ ca vaktum saṃsatsu mama putram arakṣatām
78. āhosvit vaḥ varmaśastrāyudhāni bhūṣaṇārthāya

78. Or perhaps your armor, weapons, and arms are merely for decoration, and your words only for speaking in assemblies, given that you two did not protect my son.
एवमुक्त्वा ततो वाक्यं तिष्ठंश्चापवरासिमान् ।
न स्माशक्यत बीभत्सुः केनचित्प्रसमीक्षितुम् ॥७९॥
79. evamuktvā tato vākyaṁ tiṣṭhaṁścāpavarāsimān ,
na smāśakyata bībhatsuḥ kenacitprasamīkṣitum.
79. evam uktvā tataḥ vākyam tiṣṭhan cāpavarāsimān
na sma aśakyata bībhatsuḥ kenacit prasamīkṣitum
79. evam vākyam uktvā tataḥ cāpavarāsimān tiṣṭhan

79. After speaking thus, Bibhatsu (Arjuna), standing with his excellent bow and sword, could not be looked at by anyone.
तमन्तकमिव क्रुद्धं निःश्वसन्तं मुहुर्मुहुः ।
पुत्रशोकाभिसंतप्तमश्रुपूर्णमुखं तदा ॥८०॥
80. tamantakamiva kruddhaṁ niḥśvasantaṁ muhurmuhuḥ ,
putraśokābhisaṁtaptamaśrupūrṇamukhaṁ tadā.
80. tam antakam iva kruddham niḥśvasantam muhuḥ
muhuḥ putraśokābhisantaptam aśrupūrṇamukham tadā
80. tadā tam antakam iva kruddham muhuḥ muhuḥ
niḥśvasantam putraśokābhisantaptam aśrupūrṇamukham
80. Then, seeing him enraged like Death (Antaka), repeatedly sighing, profoundly afflicted by the sorrow (śoka) for his son, and with a face full of tears.
नाभिभाष्टुं शक्नुवन्ति द्रष्टुं वा सुहृदोऽर्जुनम् ।
अन्यत्र वासुदेवाद्वा ज्येष्टाद्वा पाण्डुनन्दनात् ॥८१॥
81. nābhibhāṣṭuṁ śaknuvanti draṣṭuṁ vā suhṛdo'rjunam ,
anyatra vāsudevādvā jyeṣṭādvā pāṇḍunandanāt.
81. na abhibhāṣṭum śaknuvanti draṣṭum vā suhṛdaḥ arjunam
anyatra vāsudevāt vā jyeṣṭhāt vā pāṇḍunandanāt
81. suhṛdaḥ arjunam abhibhāṣṭum vā draṣṭum vā na śaknuvanti
anyatra vāsudevāt vā jyeṣṭhāt vā pāṇḍunandanāt
81. His friends were unable to speak to Arjuna or even look at him, with the exception of Vāsudeva (Kṛṣṇa) or the eldest son of Pāṇḍu (Yudhiṣṭhira).
सर्वास्ववस्थासु हितावर्जुनस्य मनोनुगौ ।
बहुमानात्प्रियत्वाच्च तावेनं वक्तुमर्हतः ॥८२॥
82. sarvāsvavasthāsu hitāvarjunasya manonugau ,
bahumānātpriyatvācca tāvenaṁ vaktumarhataḥ.
82. sarvāsu avasthāsu hitau arjunasya manaḥanugau
bahumānāt priyatvāt ca tau enam vaktum arhataḥ
82. tau hitau manaḥanugau sarvāsu avasthāsu arjunasya
bahumānāt priyatvāt ca enam vaktum arhataḥ
82. Only those two, who were beneficial to Arjuna in all circumstances and understood his mind, were fit to speak to him because of their great respect and affection.
ततस्तं पुत्रशोकेन भृशं पीडितमानसम् ।
राजीवलोचनं क्रुद्धं राजा वचनमब्रवीत् ॥८३॥
83. tatastaṁ putraśokena bhṛśaṁ pīḍitamānasam ,
rājīvalocanaṁ kruddhaṁ rājā vacanamabravīt.
83. tatas tam putraśokena bhṛśam pīḍitamānasam
rājīvalocanam kruddham rājā vacanam abravīt

83. Then the king (Yudhiṣṭhira) addressed these words to him (Arjuna), whose mind was greatly tormented by the sorrow (śoka) for his son, who possessed lotus-like eyes, and who was enraged.
