Bṛhadaśva said: King Ṛtuparṇa, having heard Sudeva's message, replied to Bāhuka, comforting him with gentle words.

O Bāhuka, expert in horse-lore, I wish to go to Vidarbha for Damayantī's self-choice (svayaṃvara). Do you think it is possible in a single day?

O Kaunteya, when Nala was thus spoken to by that king, his mind was torn apart by grief, and the great-souled one (Nala) fell into deep thought.

Damayantī, bewildered by sorrow, must be doing this. Or perhaps, this is a great plan devised for my sake.

5.
Alas, the distressed (tapasvinī) princess of Vidarbha (vaidarbhī) might commit a cruel deed (nṛśaṃsaṃ)! She has been betrayed (nikṛtā) by me, a contemptible (kṣudreṇa), sinful (pāpena), and foolish (akṛtabuddhinā) person.

6.
A woman's nature (strīsvabhāvaḥ) is fickle (calaḥ) in the world (loke), and my fault (mama doṣaḥ) is dreadful (dāruṇaḥ). Even if it is so (syāt evam api), she, helpless (vivaśā) and deprived of affection (gatasauhṛdā), might indeed do that. Distressed (saṃvignā) by my sorrow (mama śokena) and from despair (nairāśyāt), the slender-waisted (tanumadhyamā) one...

7.
And she would never (na ca karhicit kuryāt) do such a thing, especially (viśeṣataḥ) when she has children (sāpatyā). I will go (gatvā) and certainly (niścayam) ascertain (vetsyāmi) what is true (tathyam) and beneficial (pathyam) in this matter (yat atra). Indeed, I am doing this to fulfill King Rituparna's desire (ṛtuparṇasya kāmam) and for my own sake (ātma-artham).

Having thus decided (iti niścitya) in his mind (manasā), Bahuka (bāhukaḥ), whose mind was dejected (dīnamānasaḥ), joined his palms in reverence (kṛtāñjaliḥ) and said this (idam uvāca) to King Rituparna (ṛtuparṇam narādhipam).

28.
And I also consider his age to be equal to Nala's. This one is not Nala, the great hero, but he will certainly possess his knowledge.

daivena vidhinā yuktāḥ śāstroktaiḥ ca virūpaṇaiḥ
29.
Great souls (mahātman) indeed roam this earth in disguise, equipped with a divine arrangement and transformations (virūpaṇa) described in the scriptures.
भवेत्तु मतिभेदो मे गात्रवैरूप्यतां प्रति ।

pramāṇāt parihīnaḥ tu bhavet iti hi me matiḥ
30.
But regarding the disfigurement of his body, I might have a different opinion. Indeed, my judgment (mati) is that he would be devoid of characteristic signs.

31.
His age and build are similar (to Nala's), but his appearance is reversed. Ultimately, I consider Bāhuka to be Nala, endowed with all good qualities (guṇa).

32.
O great king, having deliberated thus repeatedly, Vārṣṇeya, the charioteer of the illustrious (puṇyaśloka) one, pondered in his heart.

33.
O king, King Ṛtuparṇa, accompanied by Vārṣṇeya the charioteer, rejoiced as he contemplated Bāhuka's expertise with horses.

34.
Having observed that great strength, valor, enthusiasm, excellent horse management, and supreme effort, he attained immense joy.
