वैशंपायन उवाच ।
स ददर्श पुरीं रम्यां सिद्धचारणसेविताम् ।
सर्वर्तुकुसुमैः पुण्यैः पादपैरुपशोभिताम् ॥१॥

Vaishampayana said: He (Arjuna) saw the beautiful city, frequented by perfected beings (siddhas) and celestial bards (cāraṇas), and splendidly adorned with sacred trees bearing flowers of all seasons.
तत्र सौगन्धिकानां स द्रुमाणां पुण्यगन्धिनाम् ।
उपवीज्यमानो मिश्रेण वायुना पुण्यगन्धिना ॥२॥

He was fanned there by a mixed, sacredly fragrant breeze, which carried the auspicious scents of the Saugandhika trees.
नन्दनं च वनं दिव्यमप्सरोगणसेवितम् ।
ददर्श दिव्यकुसुमैराह्वयद्भिरिव द्रुमैः ॥३॥

3. nandanaṁ ca vanaṁ divyamapsarogaṇasevitam ,

He saw the divine Nandana forest, frequented by throngs of Apsaras, where the trees, adorned with divine flowers, seemed to be beckoning.
नातप्ततपसा शक्यो द्रष्टुं नानाहिताग्निना ।
स लोकः पुण्यकर्तॄणां नापि युद्धपराङ्मुखैः ॥४॥

4. nātaptatapasā śakyo draṣṭuṁ nānāhitāgninā ,
sa lokaḥ puṇyakartṝṇāṁ nāpi yuddhaparāṅmukhaiḥ.

na ataptatapasā śakyaḥ draṣṭum na anāhitāgninā

That realm, which belongs to those who perform meritorious deeds, cannot be seen by one who has not practiced severe austerities (tapas), nor by one who has not maintained the sacred fires, nor even by those who turn their back on battle.
नायज्वभिर्नानृतकैर्न वेदश्रुतिवर्जितैः ।
नानाप्लुताङ्गैस्तीर्थेषु यज्ञदानबहिष्कृतैः ॥५॥

This is not for those who do not perform Vedic rituals (yajña), nor for liars, nor for those who are devoid of Vedic knowledge, nor for those whose limbs are not bathed in holy places, nor for those who are excluded from Vedic rituals (yajña) and charity (dāna).
नापि यज्ञहनैः क्षुद्रैर्द्रष्टुं शक्यः कथंचन ।
पानपैर्गुरुतल्पैश्च मांसादैर्वा दुरात्मभिः ॥६॥

6. nāpi yajñahanaiḥ kṣudrairdraṣṭuṁ śakyaḥ kathaṁcana ,

He cannot be seen by any means, not even by contemptible individuals who destroy sacred rituals (yajña), nor by those who consume intoxicating drinks, those who violate their guru's bed, or by flesh-eaters, or by evil-minded beings.
स तद्दिव्यं वनं पश्यन्दिव्यगीतनिनादितम् ।
प्रविवेश महाबाहुः शक्रस्य दयितां पुरीम् ॥७॥

While seeing that divine forest, which resounded with divine songs, the great-armed one (mahābāhu) entered the beloved city of Indra (Śakra).
तत्र देवविमानानि कामगानि सहस्रशः ।
संस्थितान्यभियातानि ददर्शायुतशस्तदा ॥८॥

8. tatra devavimānāni kāmagāni sahasraśaḥ ,

There, he then saw divine chariots (vimāna), capable of moving at will, which were both stationed there by thousands and arriving by tens of thousands.
संस्तूयमानो गन्धर्वैरप्सरोभिश्च पाण्डवः ।
पुष्पगन्धवहैः पुण्यैर्वायुभिश्चानुवीजितः ॥९॥

9. saṁstūyamāno gandharvairapsarobhiśca pāṇḍavaḥ ,
puṣpagandhavahaiḥ puṇyairvāyubhiścānuvījitaḥ.

The son of Pāṇḍu (Pāṇḍava), being greatly praised by Gandharvas and Apsarases, was also fanned by holy, flower-fragrant winds.
ततो देवाः सगन्धर्वाः सिद्धाश्च परमर्षयः ।
हृष्टाः संपूजयामासुः पार्थमक्लिष्टकारिणम् ॥१०॥

10. tato devāḥ sagandharvāḥ siddhāśca paramarṣayaḥ ,

Then the gods, along with the Gandharvas, Siddhas, and great sages, joyfully honored Pārtha, who performs deeds effortlessly.
आशीर्वादैः स्तूयमानो दिव्यवादित्रनिस्वनैः ।
प्रतिपेदे महाबाहुः शङ्खदुन्दुभिनादितम् ॥११॥

11. āśīrvādaiḥ stūyamāno divyavāditranisvanaiḥ ,

The mighty-armed (Arjuna), being praised with blessings and the sounds of divine musical instruments, received the resounding of conches and drums.
नक्षत्रमार्गं विपुलं सुरवीथीति विश्रुतम् ।
इन्द्राज्ञया ययौ पार्थः स्तूयमानः समन्ततः ॥१२॥

12. nakṣatramārgaṁ vipulaṁ suravīthīti viśrutam ,

By Indra's command, Pārtha, being praised from all directions, went to the vast stellar path, renowned as the 'celestial highway'.
तत्र साध्यास्तथा विश्वे मरुतोऽथाश्विनावपि ।
आदित्या वसवो रुद्रास्तथा ब्रह्मर्षयोऽमलाः ॥१३॥

13. tatra sādhyāstathā viśve maruto'thāśvināvapi ,

There were the Sadhyas, the Viśvedevas, the Maruts, and also the two Aśvins. Furthermore, the Adityas, Vasus, Rudras, and the pure Brahmarshis were present.
राजर्षयश्च बहवो दिलीपप्रमुखा नृपाः ।
तुम्बुरुर्नारदश्चैव गन्धर्वौ च हहाहुहू ॥१४॥

14. rājarṣayaśca bahavo dilīpapramukhā nṛpāḥ ,

Many royal sages and kings, led by Dilīpa, were present, as well as Tumburu, Nārada, and the two Gandharvas Hahā and Hūhū.
तान्सर्वान्स समागम्य विधिवत्कुरुनन्दनः ।
ततोऽपश्यद्देवराजं शतक्रतुमरिंदमम् ॥१५॥

15. tānsarvānsa samāgamya vidhivatkurunandanaḥ ,

Having properly approached all of them, the descendant of Kuru (Arjuna) then saw the king of the gods (Devendra), Indra, known as Śatakratu, the vanquisher of foes.
ततः पार्थो महाबाहुरवतीर्य रथोत्तमात् ।
ददर्श साक्षाद्देवेन्द्रं पितरं पाकशासनम् ॥१६॥

Then Pārtha, the mighty-armed (Arjuna), having descended from his excellent chariot, saw the lord of the gods (Devendra), his own father (Indra), directly in person, known as Pākaśāsana.
पाण्डुरेणातपत्रेण हेमदण्डेन चारुणा ।
दिव्यगन्धाधिवासेन व्यजनेन विधूयता ॥१७॥

17. pāṇḍureṇātapatreṇa hemadaṇḍena cāruṇā ,

He was accompanied by a white umbrella with a beautiful golden staff, and by a fanned fan, along with a divine fragrance.
विश्वावसुप्रभृतिभिर्गन्धर्वैः स्तुतिवन्दनैः ।
स्तूयमानं द्विजाग्र्यैश्च ऋग्यजुःसामसंस्तवैः ॥१८॥

18. viśvāvasuprabhṛtibhirgandharvaiḥ stutivandanaiḥ ,
stūyamānaṁ dvijāgryaiśca ṛgyajuḥsāmasaṁstavaiḥ.

viśvāvasuprabhṛtibhiḥ gandharvaiḥ stutivandanaiḥ

18.
(He was) being praised by Viśvāvasu and other Gandharvas with hymns and salutations, and by the foremost of the twice-born (dvijas) with praises from the Ṛg, Yajus, and Sāma Vedas.
ततोऽभिगम्य कौन्तेयः शिरसाभ्यनमद्बली ।
स चैनमनुवृत्ताभ्यां भुजाभ्यां प्रत्यगृह्णत ॥१९॥

19. tato'bhigamya kaunteyaḥ śirasābhyanamadbalī ,

Then, the mighty son of Kuntī (Kaunteya) approached and bowed down with his head. And he (Indra) received him with his two embracing arms.
ततः शक्रासने पुण्ये देवराजर्षिपूजिते ।
शक्रः पाणौ गृहीत्वैनमुपावेशयदन्तिके ॥२०॥

Then, Indra, taking him by the hand, seated him beside himself on the sacred throne of Indra, which was revered by gods and royal sages.
मूर्ध्नि चैनमुपाघ्राय देवेन्द्रः परवीरहा ।
अङ्कमारोपयामास प्रश्रयावनतं तदा ॥२१॥

21. mūrdhni cainamupāghrāya devendraḥ paravīrahā ,
aṅkamāropayāmāsa praśrayāvanataṁ tadā.

And then, the king of gods (Devendra), the slayer of hostile heroes, kissed him on the head and placed him, who was bowed down with humility, on his lap.
सहस्राक्षनियोगात्स पार्थः शक्रासनं तदा ।
अध्यक्रामदमेयात्मा द्वितीय इव वासवः ॥२२॥

22. sahasrākṣaniyogātsa pārthaḥ śakrāsanaṁ tadā ,
adhyakrāmadameyātmā dvitīya iva vāsavaḥ.

By the command of the thousand-eyed one, Arjuna, whose spirit (ātman) was immeasurable, then ascended Indra's seat, as if he were a second Indra.
ततः प्रेम्णा वृत्रशत्रुरर्जुनस्य शुभं मुखम् ।
पस्पर्श पुण्यगन्धेन करेण परिसान्त्वयन् ॥२३॥

23. tataḥ premṇā vṛtraśatrurarjunasya śubhaṁ mukham ,
pasparśa puṇyagandhena kareṇa parisāntvayan.

Then, the enemy of Vṛtra (Indra) affectionately touched Arjuna's beautiful face with his pure and fragrant hand, comforting him.
परिमार्जमानः शनकैर्बाहू चास्यायतौ शुभौ ।
ज्याशरक्षेपकठिनौ स्तम्भाविव हिरण्मयौ ॥२४॥

24. parimārjamānaḥ śanakairbāhū cāsyāyatau śubhau ,
jyāśarakṣepakaṭhinau stambhāviva hiraṇmayau.

And gently stroking his two long, beautiful arms, which were hardened by drawing the bowstring and shooting arrows, like two golden pillars.
वज्रग्रहणचिह्नेन करेण बलसूदनः ।
मुहुर्मुहुर्वज्रधरो बाहू संस्फालयञ्शनैः ॥२५॥

25. vajragrahaṇacihnena kareṇa balasūdanaḥ ,

The slayer of Bala (Indra), the thunderbolt-bearer (Indra), repeatedly and gently stroked (Arjuna's) two arms with his hand, which bore the mark of holding the thunderbolt (vajra).
स्मयन्निव गुडाकेशं प्रेक्षमाणः सहस्रदृक् ।
हर्षेणोत्फुल्लनयनो न चातृप्यत वृत्रहा ॥२६॥

26. smayanniva guḍākeśaṁ prekṣamāṇaḥ sahasradṛk ,
