तथा प्रयाते शिबिरं द्रोणपुत्रे महारथे ।
कच्चित्कृपश्च भोजश्च भयार्तौ न न्यवर्तताम् ॥१॥

1. Dhṛtarāṣṭra said: "After Droṇa's son, the great charioteer, had thus gone to the camp, tell me, did Kṛpa and Bhoja, afflicted by fear, not turn back?"
कच्चिन्न वारितौ क्षुद्रै रक्षिभिर्नोपलक्षितौ ।
असह्यमिति वा मत्वा न निवृत्तौ महारथौ ॥२॥
2. kaccinna vāritau kṣudrai rakṣibhirnopalakṣitau ,
asahyamiti vā matvā na nivṛttau mahārathau.

2. Were they (Kṛpa and Bhoja) surely not stopped by lowly guards, nor noticed (by them)? Or, considering it unbearable, did those two great charioteers not turn back?
कच्चित्प्रमथ्य शिबिरं हत्वा सोमकपाण्डवान् ।
दुर्योधनस्य पदवीं गतौ परमिकां रणे ॥३॥
3. kaccitpramathya śibiraṁ hatvā somakapāṇḍavān ,
duryodhanasya padavīṁ gatau paramikāṁ raṇe.

3. Did they (Kṛpa and Bhoja), after crushing the camp and killing the Somakas and Pāṇḍavas, attain Duryodhana's supreme fate on the battlefield?
पाञ्चालैर्वा विनिहतौ कच्चिन्नास्वपतां क्षितौ ।
कच्चित्ताभ्यां कृतं कर्म तन्ममाचक्ष्व संजय ॥४॥
4. pāñcālairvā vinihatau kaccinnāsvapatāṁ kṣitau ,
kaccittābhyāṁ kṛtaṁ karma tanmamācakṣva saṁjaya.

4. Or, were they (Kṛpa and Bhoja) surely not killed by the Pāñcālas and laid down on the ground? O Saṃjaya, tell me whether that deed was accomplished by them.
संजय उवाच ।
तस्मिन्प्रयाते शिबिरं द्रोणपुत्रे महात्मनि ।
कृपश्च कृतवर्मा च शिबिरद्वार्यतिष्ठताम् ॥५॥
5. saṁjaya uvāca ,
tasminprayāte śibiraṁ droṇaputre mahātmani ,
kṛpaśca kṛtavarmā ca śibiradvāryatiṣṭhatām.

5. Sañjaya said: After that noble-minded son of Droṇa (Ashvatthama) had entered the camp, Kṛpa and Kṛtavarmā remained standing at the camp's entrance.
अश्वत्थामा तु तौ दृष्ट्वा यत्नवन्तौ महारथौ ।
प्रहृष्टः शनकै राजन्निदं वचनमब्रवीत् ॥६॥
6. aśvatthāmā tu tau dṛṣṭvā yatnavantau mahārathau ,
prahṛṣṭaḥ śanakai rājannidaṁ vacanamabravīt.

6. O King, seeing those two diligent great chariot-warriors (Kṛpa and Kṛtavarmā), Ashvatthama was greatly pleased and slowly spoke these words.
यत्तौ भवन्तौ पर्याप्तौ सर्वक्षत्रस्य नाशने ।
किं पुनर्योधशेषस्य प्रसुप्तस्य विशेषतः ॥७॥
7. yattau bhavantau paryāptau sarvakṣatrasya nāśane ,
kiṁ punaryodhaśeṣasya prasuptasya viśeṣataḥ.
7. yat tau bhavantau paryāptau sarvakṣatrasya nāśane
kim punaḥ yodhaśeṣasya prasuptasya viśeṣataḥ
7. yat bhavantau tau sarvakṣatrasya nāśane paryāptau,
punaḥ prasuptasya yodhaśeṣasya viśeṣataḥ kim (vadāmi)?
7. Since you two are perfectly capable of destroying the entire Kṣatriya (kṣatra) class, how much more so for the remnant of warriors, especially those who are asleep?
अहं प्रवेक्ष्ये शिबिरं चरिष्यामि च कालवत् ।
यथा न कश्चिदपि मे जीवन्मुच्येत मानवः ॥८॥
8. ahaṁ pravekṣye śibiraṁ cariṣyāmi ca kālavat ,
yathā na kaścidapi me jīvanmucyeta mānavaḥ.
8. aham pravekṣye śibiram cariṣyāmi ca kālavat
yathā na kaścit api me jīvan mucyeta mānavaḥ
8. aham śibiram pravekṣye,
ca kālavat cariṣyāmi; yathā kaścit mānavaḥ api me jīvan na mucyeta.
8. I will enter the camp and move about like Time (Kāla) itself, so that no human being will escape me alive.
इत्युक्त्वा प्राविशद्द्रौणिः पार्थानां शिबिरं महत् ।
अद्वारेणाभ्यवस्कन्द्य विहाय भयमात्मनः ॥९॥
9. ityuktvā prāviśaddrauṇiḥ pārthānāṁ śibiraṁ mahat ,
advāreṇābhyavaskandya vihāya bhayamātmanaḥ.
9. iti uktvā prāviśat Drauṇiḥ Pārthānām śibiram mahat
advāreṇa abhyavaskandya vihāya bhayam ātmanaḥ
9. iti uktvā Drauṇiḥ Pārthānām mahat śibiram advāreṇa

9. Having spoken thus, Drauṇi entered the large camp of the Pārthas, assailing it not through its entrance and having abandoned his own fear (ātman).
स प्रविश्य महाबाहुरुद्देशज्ञश्च तस्य ह ।
धृष्टद्युम्नस्य निलयं शनकैरभ्युपागमत् ॥१०॥
10. sa praviśya mahābāhuruddeśajñaśca tasya ha ,
dhṛṣṭadyumnasya nilayaṁ śanakairabhyupāgamat.
10. saḥ praviśya mahābāhuḥ uddeśajñaḥ ca tasya ha
Dhṛṣṭadyumnasya nilayam śanakaiḥ abhyupāgamat
10. saḥ mahābāhuḥ ca tasya Dhṛṣṭadyumnasya nilayam
uddeśajñaḥ ha (san) praviśya śanakaiḥ abhyupāgamat
10. Having entered, he, the mighty-armed one, who indeed knew the exact location, slowly approached the dwelling of Dhṛṣṭadyumna.
ते तु कृत्वा महत्कर्म श्रान्ताश्च बलवद्रणे ।
प्रसुप्ता वै सुविश्वस्ताः स्वसैन्यपरिवारिताः ॥११॥
11. te tu kṛtvā mahatkarma śrāntāśca balavadraṇe ,
prasuptā vai suviśvastāḥ svasainyaparivāritāḥ.
11. te tu kṛtvā mahat karma śrāntāḥ ca balavat raṇe
prasuptāḥ vai suviśvastāḥ svasainyaparivāritāḥ
11. te tu mahat karma kṛtvā balavat raṇe śrāntāḥ ca

11. But they, having accomplished a great deed (karma) and being greatly fatigued from battle, were fast asleep, truly unsuspecting, surrounded by their own army.
अथ प्रविश्य तद्वेश्म धृष्टद्युम्नस्य भारत ।
पाञ्चाल्यं शयने द्रौणिरपश्यत्सुप्तमन्तिकात् ॥१२॥
12. atha praviśya tadveśma dhṛṣṭadyumnasya bhārata ,
pāñcālyaṁ śayane drauṇirapaśyatsuptamantikāt.
12. atha praviśya tat veśma Dhṛṣṭadyumnasya Bhārata
Pāñcālyam śayane Drauṇiḥ apaśyat suptam antikāt
12. atha Bhārata Drauṇiḥ Dhṛṣṭadyumnasya tat veśma

12. Then, O Bhārata, having entered that dwelling of Dhṛṣṭadyumna, Drauṇi saw the Pāñcāla prince sleeping nearby on his bed.
क्षौमावदाते महति स्पर्ध्यास्तरणसंवृते ।
माल्यप्रवरसंयुक्ते धूपैश्चूर्णैश्च वासिते ॥१३॥
13. kṣaumāvadāte mahati spardhyāstaraṇasaṁvṛte ,
mālyapravarasaṁyukte dhūpaiścūrṇaiśca vāsite.
13. kṣaumāvadāte mahati spardhyāstaraṇasaṃvṛte
mālyapravarasaṃyukte dhūpaiḥ cūrṇaiḥ ca vāsite

13. Upon a vast, pure white bed, made of fine linen, covered with a splendid spread, adorned with excellent garlands, and perfumed with incense and powders.
तं शयानं महात्मानं विस्रब्धमकुतोभयम् ।
प्राबोधयत पादेन शयनस्थं महीपते ॥१४॥
14. taṁ śayānaṁ mahātmānaṁ visrabdhamakutobhayam ,
prābodhayata pādena śayanasthaṁ mahīpate.
14. tam śayānam mahātmānam visrabdham akutobhayam
prābodhayata pādena śayanastham mahīpate
14. mahīpate tam śayānam mahātmānam visrabdham
akutobhayam śayanastham pādena prābodhayata
14. O king, (he) woke that great-souled one (mahātman), who was sleeping on the bed, utterly fearless and confident, by (touching him with) his foot.
स बुद्ध्वा चरणस्पर्शमुत्थाय रणदुर्मदः ।
अभ्यजानदमेयात्मा द्रोणपुत्रं महारथम् ॥१५॥
15. sa buddhvā caraṇasparśamutthāya raṇadurmadaḥ ,
abhyajānadameyātmā droṇaputraṁ mahāratham.
15. saḥ buddhvā caraṇasparśam utthāya raṇadurmadaḥ
abhyajānāt ameyātmā droṇaputram mahāratham
15. saḥ raṇadurmadaḥ ameyātmā caraṇasparśam buddhvā

15. Having perceived the touch of a foot and having risen, he, whose spirit (ātman) was immeasurable and who was fierce in battle, recognized Drona's son, the great chariot-warrior.
तमुत्पतन्तं शयनादश्वत्थामा महाबलः ।
केशेष्वालम्ब्य पाणिभ्यां निष्पिपेष महीतले ॥१६॥
16. tamutpatantaṁ śayanādaśvatthāmā mahābalaḥ ,
keśeṣvālambya pāṇibhyāṁ niṣpipeṣa mahītale.
16. tam utpatantam śayanāt aśvatthāmā mahābalaḥ
keśeṣu ālambya pāṇibhyām niṣpipeṣa mahītale
16. mahābalaḥ aśvatthāmā śayanāt utpatantam tam
keśeṣu pāṇibhyām ālambya mahītale niṣpipeṣa
16. The mighty Aśvatthāmā, seizing him by the hair with both hands as he sprang up from the bed, crushed him onto the ground.
स बलात्तेन निष्पिष्टः साध्वसेन च भारत ।
निद्रया चैव पाञ्चाल्यो नाशकच्चेष्टितुं तदा ॥१७॥
17. sa balāttena niṣpiṣṭaḥ sādhvasena ca bhārata ,
nidrayā caiva pāñcālyo nāśakacceṣṭituṁ tadā.
17. sa balāt tena niṣpiṣṭaḥ sādhvasena ca bhārata
nidrayā ca eva pāñcālyaḥ na aśaknot ceṣṭitum tadā
17. bhārata tena balāt niṣpiṣṭaḥ ca sādhvasena ca
nidrayā eva saḥ pāñcālyaḥ tadā ceṣṭitum na aśaknot
17. O Bhārata, crushed by him with force, and simultaneously overwhelmed by fear and sleep, that Pāñcāla prince (Dhṛṣṭadyumna) was then unable to stir.
तमाक्रम्य तदा राजन्कण्ठे चोरसि चोभयोः ।
नदन्तं विस्फुरन्तं च पशुमारममारयत् ॥१८॥
18. tamākramya tadā rājankaṇṭhe corasi cobhayoḥ ,
nadantaṁ visphurantaṁ ca paśumāramamārayat.
18. tam ākramya tadā rājan kaṇṭhe ca urasi ca ubhayoḥ
nadantam visphurantam ca paśumāram amārayat
18. rājan tadā tam ākramya kaṇṭhe ca urasi ubhayoḥ
nadantam ca visphurantam paśumāram amārayat
18. Then, O king, having overpowered him, he killed him – who was crying out and struggling – in the manner of an animal's slaughter (paśumāram), striking him on both his neck and chest.
तुदन्नखैस्तु स द्रौणिं नातिव्यक्तमुदाहरत् ।
आचार्यपुत्र शस्त्रेण जहि मा मा चिरं कृथाः ।
त्वत्कृते सुकृताँल्लोकान्गच्छेयं द्विपदां वर ॥१९॥
19. tudannakhaistu sa drauṇiṁ nātivyaktamudāharat ,
ācāryaputra śastreṇa jahi mā mā ciraṁ kṛthāḥ ,
tvatkṛte sukṛtāँllokāngaccheyaṁ dvipadāṁ vara.
19. tudan nakhaiḥ tu saḥ drauṇim na
ativyaktam udāharat ācāryaputra śastreṇa
jahi mā mā ciram kṛthāḥ tvatkṛte
sukṛtān lokān gaccheyam dvipadām vara
19. tudan nakhaiḥ saḥ tu drauṇim na
ativyaktam udāharat ācāryaputra śastreṇa

19. Indeed, even as he pierced him with his nails, he (Dhṛṣṭadyumna) spoke to Droṇa's son (Aśvatthāmā), though not very clearly: 'O son of the teacher, kill me with a weapon! Do not delay! For your sake, O best among two-footed beings, may I attain the worlds (loka) of the virtuous.'
तस्याव्यक्तां तु तां वाचं संश्रुत्य द्रौणिरब्रवीत् ।
आचार्यघातिनां लोका न सन्ति कुलपांसन ।
तस्माच्छस्त्रेण निधनं न त्वमर्हसि दुर्मते ॥२०॥
20. tasyāvyaktāṁ tu tāṁ vācaṁ saṁśrutya drauṇirabravīt ,
ācāryaghātināṁ lokā na santi kulapāṁsana ,
tasmācchastreṇa nidhanaṁ na tvamarhasi durmate.
20. tasya avyaktām tu tām vācam saṃśrutya
drauṇiḥ abravīt ācāryaghātinām
lokāḥ na santi kulapāṃsana tasmāt
śastreṇa nidhanam na tvam arhasi durmate
20. tu tasya tām avyaktām vācam saṃśrutya
drauṇiḥ abravīt kulapāṃsana
ācāryaghātinām lokāḥ na santi tasmāt
durmate tvam śastreṇa nidhanam na arhasi
20. However, upon hearing his (Dhṛṣṭadyumna's) indistinct voice, Droṇa's son (Aśvatthāmā) replied: 'O disgracer of your family, there are no good worlds (loka) for those who kill their teacher! Therefore, O evil-minded one, you do not deserve to die by a weapon!'
एवं ब्रुवाणस्तं वीरं सिंहो मत्तमिव द्विपम् ।
मर्मस्वभ्यवधीत्क्रुद्धः पादाष्ठीलैः सुदारुणैः ॥२१॥
21. evaṁ bruvāṇastaṁ vīraṁ siṁho mattamiva dvipam ,
marmasvabhyavadhītkruddhaḥ pādāṣṭhīlaiḥ sudāruṇaiḥ.
21. evam bruvāṇaḥ tam vīram siṃhaḥ mattam iva dvipam
marmasu abhyavadhīt kruddhaḥ pādāṣṭhīlaiḥ sudāruṇaiḥ
21. evam bruvāṇaḥ kruddhaḥ siṃhaḥ mattam dvipam iva tam
vīram marmasu sudāruṇaiḥ pādāṣṭhīlaiḥ abhyavadhīt
21. Speaking thus, the enraged man, like a lion attacking an intoxicated elephant, struck that hero in his vital points with extremely terrible heel strikes.
तस्य वीरस्य शब्देन मार्यमाणस्य वेश्मनि ।
अबुध्यन्त महाराज स्त्रियो ये चास्य रक्षिणः ॥२२॥
22. tasya vīrasya śabdena māryamāṇasya veśmani ,
abudhyanta mahārāja striyo ye cāsya rakṣiṇaḥ.
22. tasya vīrasya śabdena māryamāṇasya veśmani
abudhyanta mahārāja striyaḥ ye ca asya rakṣiṇaḥ
22. mahārāja tasya māryamāṇasya vīrasya śabdena
veśmani striyaḥ ca ye asya rakṣiṇaḥ abudhyanta
22. O great king (mahārāja), by the sound of that hero being struck down in the house, the women and his guards awoke.
ते दृष्ट्वा वर्ष्मवन्तं तमतिमानुषविक्रमम् ।
भूतमेव व्यवस्यन्तो न स्म प्रव्याहरन्भयात् ॥२३॥
23. te dṛṣṭvā varṣmavantaṁ tamatimānuṣavikramam ,
bhūtameva vyavasyanto na sma pravyāharanbhayāt.
23. te dṛṣṭvā varṣmavantam tam atimānuṣavikramam
bhūtam eva vyavasyantaḥ na sma pravyāharan bhayāt
23. te varṣmavantam atimānuṣavikramam tam dṛṣṭvā

23. Seeing him, who was corporeal and possessed of superhuman valor, they, concluding that he was a supernatural being, did not speak out of fear.
तं तु तेनाभ्युपायेन गमयित्वा यमक्षयम् ।
अध्यतिष्ठत्स तेजस्वी रथं प्राप्य सुदर्शनम् ॥२४॥
24. taṁ tu tenābhyupāyena gamayitvā yamakṣayam ,
adhyatiṣṭhatsa tejasvī rathaṁ prāpya sudarśanam.
24. tam tu tena abhyupāyena gamayitvā yamakṣayam
adhyatiṣṭhat saḥ tejasvī ratham prāpya sudarśanam
24. tu tejasvī tam tena abhyupāyena yamakṣayam
gamayitvā saḥ sudarśanam ratham prāpya adhyatiṣṭhat
24. But that lustrous and powerful one (tejasvin), having dispatched him to the abode of Yama (yamakṣayam) by that very means, then obtained and mounted the splendid chariot (sudarśanam).
स तस्य भवनाद्राजन्निष्क्रम्यानादयन्दिशः ।
रथेन शिबिरं प्रायाज्जिघांसुर्द्विषतो बली ॥२५॥
25. sa tasya bhavanādrājanniṣkramyānādayandiśaḥ ,
rathena śibiraṁ prāyājjighāṁsurdviṣato balī.
25. sa tasya bhavanāt rājan niṣkramya anādayan diśaḥ
| rathena śibiram prāyāt jighāṃsuḥ dviṣataḥ balī
25. rājan saḥ balī tasya bhavanāt niṣkramya diśaḥ
anādayan rathena dviṣataḥ jighāṃsuḥ śibiram prāyāt
25. O King (Dhṛtarāṣṭra), that mighty one, having emerged from his dwelling and making the directions resound, proceeded by chariot to the camp, intending to kill his enemies.
अपक्रान्ते ततस्तस्मिन्द्रोणपुत्रे महारथे ।
सह तै रक्षिभिः सर्वैः प्रणेदुर्योषितस्तदा ॥२६॥
26. apakrānte tatastasmindroṇaputre mahārathe ,
saha tai rakṣibhiḥ sarvaiḥ praṇeduryoṣitastadā.
26. apakrānte tataḥ tasmin droṇaputre mahārathe |
saha taiḥ rakṣibhiḥ sarvaiḥ praṇeduḥ yoṣitaḥ tadā
26. tataḥ tasmin droṇaputre mahārathe apakrānte tadā
sarvaiḥ taiḥ rakṣibhiḥ saha yoṣitaḥ praṇeduḥ
26. After that great chariot-warrior, the son of Droṇa (Aśvatthāman), had then departed, the women, along with all those guards, then wailed.
राजानं निहतं दृष्ट्वा भृशं शोकपरायणाः ।
व्याक्रोशन्क्षत्रियाः सर्वे धृष्टद्युम्नस्य भारत ॥२७॥
27. rājānaṁ nihataṁ dṛṣṭvā bhṛśaṁ śokaparāyaṇāḥ ,
vyākrośankṣatriyāḥ sarve dhṛṣṭadyumnasya bhārata.
27. rājānam nihatam dṛṣṭvā bhṛśam śokaparāyaṇāḥ |
vyākrośan kṣatriyāḥ sarve dhṛṣṭadyumnasya bhārata
27. bhārata rājānam nihatam dṛṣṭvā bhṛśam śokaparāyaṇāḥ
sarve kṣatriyāḥ dhṛṣṭadyumnasya vyākrośan
27. O Bhārata (Dhṛtarāṣṭra), all the Kṣatriyas, having seen king Dhṛṣṭadyumna slain, and deeply overwhelmed by grief, cried out.
तासां तु तेन शब्देन समीपे क्षत्रियर्षभाः ।
क्षिप्रं च समनह्यन्त किमेतदिति चाब्रुवन् ॥२८॥
28. tāsāṁ tu tena śabdena samīpe kṣatriyarṣabhāḥ ,
kṣipraṁ ca samanahyanta kimetaditi cābruvan.
28. tāsām tu tena śabdena samīpe kṣatriyarṣabhāḥ |
kṣipram ca samanahyanta kim etat iti ca abruvan
28. tu tāsām tena śabdena samīpe kṣatriyarṣabhāḥ ca
kṣipram samanahyanta kim etat iti ca abruvan
28. But by that sound of theirs, the chief Kṣatriyas nearby quickly prepared themselves and said, "What is this?"
स्त्रियस्तु राजन्वित्रस्ता भारद्वाजं निरीक्ष्य तम् ।
अब्रुवन्दीनकण्ठेन क्षिप्रमाद्रवतेति वै ॥२९॥
29. striyastu rājanvitrastā bhāradvājaṁ nirīkṣya tam ,
abruvandīnakaṇṭhena kṣipramādravateti vai.

29. But, O King, the terrified women, seeing him, the son of Bharadvāja, exclaimed with a mournful voice, 'Quickly flee!'
राक्षसो वा मनुष्यो वा नैनं जानीमहे वयम् ।
हत्वा पाञ्चालराजं यो रथमारुह्य तिष्ठति ॥३०॥
30. rākṣaso vā manuṣyo vā nainaṁ jānīmahe vayam ,
hatvā pāñcālarājaṁ yo rathamāruhya tiṣṭhati.
30. rākṣasaḥ vā manuṣyaḥ vā na enam jānīmahe vayam
hatvā pāñcālarājam yaḥ ratham āruhya tiṣṭhati
30. vayam enam rākṣasaḥ vā manuṣyaḥ vā na jānīmahe

30. We do not know if this one is a demon or a human, he who, having killed the king of Pañcāla, stands on the chariot.
ततस्ते योधमुख्यास्तं सहसा पर्यवारयन् ।
स तानापततः सर्वान्रुद्रास्त्रेण व्यपोथयत् ॥३१॥
31. tataste yodhamukhyāstaṁ sahasā paryavārayan ,
sa tānāpatataḥ sarvānrudrāstreṇa vyapothayat.
31. tataḥ te yodhamukhyāḥ tam sahasā paryavārayan
sa tān āpatataḥ sarvān rudrāstreṇa vyapothayat
31. tataḥ te yodhamukhyāḥ sahasā tam paryavārayan
sa rudrāstreṇa āpatataḥ tān sarvān vyapothayat
31. Then, those chief warriors suddenly surrounded him. He, in turn, annihilated all of them who were attacking with a Rudra weapon.
धृष्टद्युम्नं च हत्वा स तांश्चैवास्य पदानुगान् ।
अपश्यच्छयने सुप्तमुत्तमौजसमन्तिके ॥३२॥
32. dhṛṣṭadyumnaṁ ca hatvā sa tāṁścaivāsya padānugān ,
apaśyacchayane suptamuttamaujasamantike.
32. dhṛṣṭadyumnam ca hatvā sa tān ca eva asya
padānugān apaśyat śayane suptam uttamaujasam antike
32. sa dhṛṣṭadyumnam ca hatvā,

32. And having killed Dhṛṣṭadyumna, he then saw his followers and Uttamaujas, who was sleeping on his bed nearby.
तमप्याक्रम्य पादेन कण्ठे चोरसि चौजसा ।
तथैव मारयामास विनर्दन्तमरिंदमम् ॥३३॥
33. tamapyākramya pādena kaṇṭhe corasi caujasā ,
tathaiva mārayāmāsa vinardantamariṁdamam.
33. tam api ākramya pādena kaṇṭhe ca urasi ca ojasā
tathā eva mārayāmāsa vinardantam ariṃdamam
33. tam ariṃdamam vinardantam api pādena kaṇṭhe ca
urasi ca ojasā ākramya tathā eva mārayāmāsa
33. Stepping on the neck and chest of that roaring vanquisher of enemies with his foot and with great might, he killed him in just that manner.
युधामन्युस्तु संप्राप्तो मत्त्वा तं रक्षसा हतम् ।
गदामुद्यम्य वेगेन हृदि द्रौणिमताडयत् ॥३४॥
34. yudhāmanyustu saṁprāpto mattvā taṁ rakṣasā hatam ,
gadāmudyamya vegena hṛdi drauṇimatāḍayat.

34. But Yudhamanyu, having arrived and thinking that (the fallen warrior) had been killed by a demon (rakṣas), quickly raised his mace and struck Droṇi's son (Drauṇi) on the chest.
तमभिद्रुत्य जग्राह क्षितौ चैनमपातयत् ।
विस्फुरन्तं च पशुवत्तथैवैनममारयत् ॥३५॥
35. tamabhidrutya jagrāha kṣitau cainamapātayat ,
visphurantaṁ ca paśuvattathaivainamamārayat.
35. tam abhidrutya jagrāha kṣitau ca enam apātayat
visphurantam ca paśuvat tathā eva enam amārayat
35. tam abhidrutya jagrāha ca enam kṣitau apātayat

35. Rushing towards him, he seized him and threw him to the ground. And as he was writhing like an animal, he killed him in just that manner.
तथा स वीरो हत्वा तं ततोऽन्यान्समुपाद्रवत् ।
संसुप्तानेव राजेन्द्र तत्र तत्र महारथान् ।
स्फुरतो वेपमानांश्च शमितेव पशून्मखे ॥३६॥
36. tathā sa vīro hatvā taṁ tato'nyānsamupādravat ,
saṁsuptāneva rājendra tatra tatra mahārathān ,
sphurato vepamānāṁśca śamiteva paśūnmakhe.

36. Thus, O king (rājendra), that hero, having killed him, then rushed towards the other deeply sleeping great charioteers (mahārathas) here and there. He killed them, though they were struggling and trembling, just as a sacrificer (śamitā) kills animals (paśus) in a ritual sacrifice (makha).
ततो निस्त्रिंशमादाय जघानान्यान्पृथग्जनान् ।
भागशो विचरन्मार्गानसियुद्धविशारदः ॥३७॥
37. tato nistriṁśamādāya jaghānānyānpṛthagjanān ,
bhāgaśo vicaranmārgānasiyuddhaviśāradaḥ.

bhāgaśaḥ vicaran mārgān asi-yuddha-viśāradaḥ

37. Then, taking his sword, he, an expert in sword-fighting, moving along the roads, killed others, the common people, group by group.
तथैव गुल्मे संप्रेक्ष्य शयानान्मध्यगौल्मिकान् ।
श्रान्तान्न्यस्तायुधान्सर्वान्क्षणेनैव व्यपोथयत् ॥३८॥
38. tathaiva gulme saṁprekṣya śayānānmadhyagaulmikān ,
śrāntānnyastāyudhānsarvānkṣaṇenaiva vyapothayat.
38. tathā eva gulme samprekṣya śayānān madhya-gaulmikān
śrāntān nyasta-āyudhān sarvān kṣaṇena eva vyapothayat

38. Similarly, having seen all the middle guards sleeping in the encampment, exhausted and having put down their weapons, he destroyed them in an instant.
योधानश्वान्द्विपांश्चैव प्राच्छिनत्स वरासिना ।
रुधिरोक्षितसर्वाङ्गः कालसृष्ट इवान्तकः ॥३९॥
39. yodhānaśvāndvipāṁścaiva prācchinatsa varāsinā ,
rudhirokṣitasarvāṅgaḥ kālasṛṣṭa ivāntakaḥ.
39. yodhān aśvān dvipān ca eva prācchinat saḥ vara-asinā
rudhira-ukṣita-sarva-aṅgaḥ kāla-sṛṣṭaḥ iva antakaḥ

iva vara-asinā yodhān aśvān dvipān ca eva prācchinat
39. With his excellent sword, he cut down warriors, horses, and elephants. His entire body was drenched in blood, as if he were Antaka (the Destroyer) manifested by Kāla (Time/Death).
विस्फुरद्भिश्च तैर्द्रौणिर्निस्त्रिंशस्योद्यमेन च ।
आक्षेपेण तथैवासेस्त्रिधा रक्तोक्षितोऽभवत् ॥४०॥
40. visphuradbhiśca tairdrauṇirnistriṁśasyodyamena ca ,
ākṣepeṇa tathaivāsestridhā raktokṣito'bhavat.

40. Drauṇi became drenched in blood in three ways: by the writhing (bodies) and by them, by the exertion of wielding his long sword, and similarly by the forceful blows of the sword.
तस्य लोहितसिक्तस्य दीप्तखड्गस्य युध्यतः ।
अमानुष इवाकारो बभौ परमभीषणः ॥४१॥
41. tasya lohitasiktasya dīptakhaḍgasya yudhyataḥ ,
amānuṣa ivākāro babhau paramabhīṣaṇaḥ.

41. As he fought, his form, soaked in blood and with a gleaming sword, appeared superhuman and exceedingly terrifying.
ये त्वजाग्रत कौरव्य तेऽपि शब्देन मोहिताः ।
निरीक्ष्यमाणा अन्योन्यं द्रौणिं दृष्ट्वा प्रविव्यथुः ॥४२॥
42. ye tvajāgrata kauravya te'pi śabdena mohitāḥ ,
nirīkṣyamāṇā anyonyaṁ drauṇiṁ dṛṣṭvā pravivyathuḥ.
42. ye tu ajāgrata kauravya te api śabdena mohitāḥ
nirīkṣyamāṇāḥ anyonyam drauṇim dṛṣṭvā pravivyathuḥ

42. But O Kauravya, even those who were awake were bewildered by the sound. Looking at each other, they became greatly distressed upon seeing Drona's son (Drauṇi).
तद्रूपं तस्य ते दृष्ट्वा क्षत्रियाः शत्रुकर्शनाः ।
राक्षसं मन्यमानास्तं नयनानि न्यमीलयन् ॥४३॥
43. tadrūpaṁ tasya te dṛṣṭvā kṣatriyāḥ śatrukarśanāḥ ,
rākṣasaṁ manyamānāstaṁ nayanāni nyamīlayan.
43. tad rūpam tasya te dṛṣṭvā kṣatriyāḥ śatrukārśanāḥ
rākṣasam manyamānāḥ tam nayanāni nyamīlayan

43. Having seen that form of his, those Kṣatriya warriors, tormentors of their enemies, thinking him to be a demon, closed their eyes.
स घोररूपो व्यचरत्कालवच्छिबिरे ततः ।
अपश्यद्द्रौपदीपुत्रानवशिष्टांश्च सोमकान् ॥४४॥
44. sa ghorarūpo vyacaratkālavacchibire tataḥ ,
apaśyaddraupadīputrānavaśiṣṭāṁśca somakān.

apaśyat draupadīputrān avaśiṣṭān ca somakān

44. Then, he, of dreadful form, wandered in the camp like (the god of) Death. He saw the sons of Draupadi and the other remaining Somaka warriors.
तेन शब्देन वित्रस्ता धनुर्हस्ता महारथाः ।
धृष्टद्युम्नं हतं श्रुत्वा द्रौपदेया विशां पते ।
अवाकिरञ्शरव्रातैर्भारद्वाजमभीतवत् ॥४५॥
45. tena śabdena vitrastā dhanurhastā mahārathāḥ ,
dhṛṣṭadyumnaṁ hataṁ śrutvā draupadeyā viśāṁ pate ,
avākirañśaravrātairbhāradvājamabhītavat.

45. O ruler of men, the great chariot warriors, holding bows in their hands, became terrified by that sound. Hearing that Dhṛṣṭadyumna had been killed, the sons of Draupad then fearlessly showered Bhāradvāja (Droṇa) with volleys of arrows.
ततस्तेन निनादेन संप्रबुद्धाः प्रभद्रकाः ।
शिलीमुखैः शिखण्डी च द्रोणपुत्रं समार्दयन् ॥४६॥
46. tatastena ninādena saṁprabuddhāḥ prabhadrakāḥ ,
śilīmukhaiḥ śikhaṇḍī ca droṇaputraṁ samārdayan.

46. Then, awakened by that sound, the Prabhadrakas and Shikhandi tormented Droṇa's son (Aśvatthāman) with arrows.
भारद्वाजस्तु तान्दृष्ट्वा शरवर्षाणि वर्षतः ।
ननाद बलवन्नादं जिघांसुस्तान्सुदुर्जयान् ॥४७॥
47. bhāradvājastu tāndṛṣṭvā śaravarṣāṇi varṣataḥ ,
nanāda balavannādaṁ jighāṁsustānsudurjayān.
47. bhāradvājaḥ tu tān dṛṣṭvā śaravarṣāṇi varṣataḥ
| nanāda balavat nādam jighāṃsuḥ tān sudurjayān
47. tu bhāradvājaḥ tān शरवर्षाणि वर्षतः दृष्ट्वा,
तान् सुदुर्जयान् जिघांसुः बलवत् नादम् ननाद
47. But Bhāradvāja (Droṇa), seeing them raining volleys of arrows, roared a mighty roar, desiring to kill those who were very difficult to conquer.
ततः परमसंक्रुद्धः पितुर्वधमनुस्मरन् ।
अवरुह्य रथोपस्थात्त्वरमाणोऽभिदुद्रुवे ॥४८॥
48. tataḥ paramasaṁkruddhaḥ piturvadhamanusmaran ,
avaruhya rathopasthāttvaramāṇo'bhidudruve.

48. Then, exceedingly enraged and remembering his father's death, he quickly descended from the chariot's platform and rushed forward.
सहस्रचन्द्रं विपुलं गृहीत्वा चर्म संयुगे ।
खड्गं च विपुलं दिव्यं जातरूपपरिष्कृतम् ।
द्रौपदेयानभिद्रुत्य खड्गेन व्यचरद्बली ॥४९॥
49. sahasracandraṁ vipulaṁ gṛhītvā carma saṁyuge ,
khaḍgaṁ ca vipulaṁ divyaṁ jātarūpapariṣkṛtam ,
draupadeyānabhidrutya khaḍgena vyacaradbalī.

द्रौपदेयान् अभिद्रुत्य खड्गेन व्यचरत्
49. The powerful warrior, grasping a large shield adorned with a thousand moon-like patterns and a vast, divine sword embellished with gold, attacked the sons of Draupadī and fought fiercely with his sword in battle.
ततः स नरशार्दूलः प्रतिविन्ध्यं तमाहवे ।
कुक्षिदेशेऽवधीद्राजन्स हतो न्यपतद्भुवि ॥५०॥
50. tataḥ sa naraśārdūlaḥ prativindhyaṁ tamāhave ,
kukṣideśe'vadhīdrājansa hato nyapatadbhuvi.
50. tataḥ saḥ naraśārdūlaḥ prativindhyam tam āhave
kukṣideśe avadhīt rājan saḥ hataḥ nyapatat bhuvi

50. O king, then that foremost among men struck down Prativindhya in battle, hitting him in the stomach region. Having been slain, he fell to the ground.
प्रासेन विद्ध्वा द्रौणिं तु सुतसोमः प्रतापवान् ।
पुनश्चासिं समुद्यम्य द्रोणपुत्रमुपाद्रवत् ॥५१॥
51. prāsena viddhvā drauṇiṁ tu sutasomaḥ pratāpavān ,
punaścāsiṁ samudyamya droṇaputramupādravat.

51. But the powerful Sutasoma, having struck Droṇi (Ashvatthama) with a spear, then again raised his sword and rushed towards Drona's son.
सुतसोमस्य सासिं तु बाहुं छित्त्वा नरर्षभः ।
पुनरभ्यहनत्पार्श्वे स भिन्नहृदयोऽपतत् ॥५२॥
52. sutasomasya sāsiṁ tu bāhuṁ chittvā nararṣabhaḥ ,
punarabhyahanatpārśve sa bhinnahṛdayo'patat.
52. sutasomasya sāsim tu bāhum chittvā nararṣabhaḥ
punaḥ abhyahanat pārśve saḥ bhinnahṛdayaḥ apatat
52. tu nararṣabhaḥ sutasomasya sāsim bāhum chittvā

52. But that foremost among men, having cut off Sutasoma's sword-wielding arm, again struck him in the flank. With his heart shattered, he fell.
नाकुलिस्तु शतानीको रथचक्रेण वीर्यवान् ।
दोर्भ्यामुत्क्षिप्य वेगेन वक्षस्येनमताडयत् ॥५३॥
53. nākulistu śatānīko rathacakreṇa vīryavān ,
dorbhyāmutkṣipya vegena vakṣasyenamatāḍayat.
53. नाकुलिः तु शतानीकः रथचक्रेण वीर्यवान्
दोर्भ्याम् उत्क्षिप्य वेगेन वक्षसि एनम् अताडयत्
53. वीर्यवान् नाकुलिः तु दोर्भ्याम् रथचक्रेण
उत्क्षिप्य वेगेन एनम् शतानीकः वक्षसि अताडयत्
53. The valorous Nakula, lifting a chariot wheel with his two arms, forcefully struck Śatānīka on the chest.
अताडयच्छतानीकं मुक्तचक्रं द्विजस्तु सः ।
स विह्वलो ययौ भूमिं ततोऽस्यापाहरच्छिरः ॥५४॥
54. atāḍayacchatānīkaṁ muktacakraṁ dvijastu saḥ ,
sa vihvalo yayau bhūmiṁ tato'syāpāharacchiraḥ.
54. अताडयत् शतानीकम् मुक्तचक्रम् द्विजः तु सः
सः विह्वलः ययौ भूमिम् ततः अस्य अपाहरत् शिरः
54. सः द्विजः तु मुक्तचक्रम् शतानीकम् अताडयत्
सः विह्वलः भूमिम् ययौ ततः अस्य शिरः अपाहरत्
54. But that Brahmin (Aśvatthāman) struck Śatānīka, who had lost his wheel. Bewildered, he (Śatānīka) fell to the ground. Then (Aśvatthāman) cut off his head.
श्रुतकर्मा तु परिघं गृहीत्वा समताडयत् ।
अभिद्रुत्य ततो द्रौणिं सव्ये स फलके भृशम् ॥५५॥
55. śrutakarmā tu parighaṁ gṛhītvā samatāḍayat ,
abhidrutya tato drauṇiṁ savye sa phalake bhṛśam.
55. श्रुतकर्मा तु परिघम् गृहीत्वा समताडयत्
अभिद्रुत्य ततः द्रौणिम् सव्ये सः फलके भृशम्
55. श्रुतकर्मा तु सः परिघम् गृहीत्वा ततः द्रौणिम्
अभिद्रुत्य सव्ये फलके भृशम् समताडयत्
55. But Śrutakarmā, having seized an iron club and then having rushed towards Drauṇi (Aśvatthāman), struck him severely on his left shield.
स तु तं श्रुतकर्माणमास्ये जघ्ने वरासिना ।
स हतो न्यपतद्भूमौ विमूढो विकृताननः ॥५६॥
56. sa tu taṁ śrutakarmāṇamāsye jaghne varāsinā ,
sa hato nyapatadbhūmau vimūḍho vikṛtānanaḥ.
56. सः तु तम् श्रुतकर्माणम् आस्ये जघ्ने वरासिना
सः हतः न्यपतत् भूमौ विमूढः विकृताननः
56. सः तु वरासिना तम् श्रुतकर्माणम् आस्ये
जघ्ne सः हतः विमूढः विकृताननः भूमौ न्यपतत्
56. But he (Drauṇi/Aśvatthāman) struck Śrutakarmā on the face with an excellent sword. He (Śrutakarmā), thus struck and bewildered, fell to the ground with a distorted face.
तेन शब्देन वीरस्तु श्रुतकीर्तिर्महाधनुः ।
अश्वत्थामानमासाद्य शरवर्षैरवाकिरत् ॥५७॥
57. tena śabdena vīrastu śrutakīrtirmahādhanuḥ ,
aśvatthāmānamāsādya śaravarṣairavākirat.

57. Hearing that sound, the hero Śrutakīrti, wielding his great bow, approached Ashwatthaman and showered him with arrows.
तस्यापि शरवर्षाणि चर्मणा प्रतिवार्य सः ।

58. Ashwatthaman, having warded off those showers of arrows with his shield, then severed from the body the shining head, adorned with earrings.
ततो भीष्मनिहन्ता तं सह सर्वैः प्रभद्रकैः ।
अहनत्सर्वतो वीरं नानाप्रहरणैर्बली ।
शिलीमुखेन चाप्येनं भ्रुवोर्मध्ये समार्दयत् ॥५९॥
59. tato bhīṣmanihantā taṁ saha sarvaiḥ prabhadrakaiḥ ,
ahanatsarvato vīraṁ nānāpraharaṇairbalī ,
śilīmukhena cāpyenaṁ bhruvormadhye samārdayat.

59. Then, the powerful slayer of Bhishma (Shikhaṇḍī), along with all the Prabhadrkas, attacked that hero (Ashwatthaman) from all sides with various weapons. He also severely wounded him between the eyebrows with an arrow.
स तु क्रोधसमाविष्टो द्रोणपुत्रो महाबलः ।
शिखण्डिनं समासाद्य द्विधा चिच्छेद सोऽसिना ॥६०॥
60. sa tu krodhasamāviṣṭo droṇaputro mahābalaḥ ,
śikhaṇḍinaṁ samāsādya dvidhā ciccheda so'sinā.

60. But that extremely powerful son of Drona (Ashwatthaman), overcome with intense anger, approached Shikhaṇḍī and cut him into two with his sword.
शिखण्डिनं ततो हत्वा क्रोधाविष्टः परंतपः ।
प्रभद्रकगणान्सर्वानभिदुद्राव वेगवान् ।
यच्च शिष्टं विराटस्य बलं तच्च समाद्रवत् ॥६१॥
61. śikhaṇḍinaṁ tato hatvā krodhāviṣṭaḥ paraṁtapaḥ ,
prabhadrakagaṇānsarvānabhidudrāva vegavān ,
yacca śiṣṭaṁ virāṭasya balaṁ tacca samādravat.

61. Then, after killing Shikhandin, that tormentor of foes, inflamed with rage, swiftly charged towards all the Prabhadrka troops. And whatever remained of Virata's army, he also attacked that.
द्रुपदस्य च पुत्राणां पौत्राणां सुहृदामपि ।
चकार कदनं घोरं दृष्ट्वा दृष्ट्वा महाबलः ॥६२॥
62. drupadasya ca putrāṇāṁ pautrāṇāṁ suhṛdāmapi ,
cakāra kadanaṁ ghoraṁ dṛṣṭvā dṛṣṭvā mahābalaḥ.

62. And the immensely mighty one, repeatedly encountering them, brought about a dreadful slaughter of Drupada's sons, grandsons, and even his friends.
अन्यानन्यांश्च पुरुषानभिसृत्याभिसृत्य च ।
न्यकृन्तदसिना द्रौणिरसिमार्गविशारदः ॥६३॥
63. anyānanyāṁśca puruṣānabhisṛtyābhisṛtya ca ,
nyakṛntadasinā drauṇirasimārgaviśāradaḥ.

63. And Drauṇi, Drona's son, who was skilled in sword fighting, repeatedly attacked and cut down other men (puruṣa) with his sword.
कालीं रक्तास्यनयनां रक्तमाल्यानुलेपनाम् ।
रक्ताम्बरधरामेकां पाशहस्तां शिखण्डिनीम् ॥६४॥
64. kālīṁ raktāsyanayanāṁ raktamālyānulepanām ,
raktāmbaradharāmekāṁ pāśahastāṁ śikhaṇḍinīm.

64. (He beheld) a singular dark-skinned goddess, (like) Kālī, whose face and eyes were red, adorned with red garlands and smeared with red ointments, dressed in red garments, holding a noose in her hand, and crowned with a crest.
ददृशुः कालरात्रिं ते स्मयमानामवस्थिताम् ।
नराश्वकुञ्जरान्पाशैर्बद्ध्वा घोरैः प्रतस्थुषीम् ।
हरन्तीं विविधान्प्रेतान्पाशबद्धान्विमूर्धजान् ॥६५॥
65. dadṛśuḥ kālarātriṁ te smayamānāmavasthitām ,
narāśvakuñjarānpāśairbaddhvā ghoraiḥ pratasthuṣīm ,
harantīṁ vividhānpretānpāśabaddhānvimūrdhajān.

65. They saw Kalaratri, standing there and smiling. She was moving forth, having bound men, horses, and elephants with dreadful nooses, and carrying away various headless spirits who were also bound by her snares.
स्वप्ने सुप्तान्नयन्तीं तां रात्रिष्वन्यासु मारिष ।
ददृशुर्योधमुख्यास्ते घ्नन्तं द्रौणिं च नित्यदा ॥६६॥
66. svapne suptānnayantīṁ tāṁ rātriṣvanyāsu māriṣa ,
dadṛśuryodhamukhyāste ghnantaṁ drauṇiṁ ca nityadā.

66. O venerable one, on other nights, those chief warriors saw Kalaratri leading away the sleeping in their dreams. They also constantly saw Drauni (Ashvatthama) killing.
यतः प्रवृत्तः संग्रामः कुरुपाण्डवसेनयोः ।
ततः प्रभृति तां कृत्यामपश्यन्द्रौणिमेव च ॥६७॥
67. yataḥ pravṛttaḥ saṁgrāmaḥ kurupāṇḍavasenayoḥ ,
tataḥ prabhṛti tāṁ kṛtyāmapaśyandrauṇimeva ca.

67. From the moment the battle between the armies of the Kurus and Pandavas commenced, from that point onwards, they beheld that Kṛtyā (Kalaratri) and Drauni (Ashvatthama).
तांस्तु दैवहतान्पूर्वं पश्चाद्द्रौणिर्न्यपातयत् ।
त्रासयन्सर्वभूतानि विनदन्भैरवान्रवान् ॥६८॥
68. tāṁstu daivahatānpūrvaṁ paścāddrauṇirnyapātayat ,
trāsayansarvabhūtāni vinadanbhairavānravān.

68. But Drauni (Ashvatthama) struck down those who had previously been slain by divine will, terrifying all beings and uttering dreadful roars.
तदनुस्मृत्य ते वीरा दर्शनं पौर्वकालिकम् ।
इदं तदित्यमन्यन्त दैवेनोपनिपीडिताः ॥६९॥
69. tadanusmṛtya te vīrā darśanaṁ paurvakālikam ,
idaṁ tadityamanyanta daivenopanipīḍitāḥ.

idam tat iti amanyanta daivena upanipīḍitāḥ

69. Remembering that prior vision, those warriors, oppressed by fate, believed, "This is that (predicted event)."
ततस्तेन निनादेन प्रत्यबुध्यन्त धन्विनः ।
शिबिरे पाण्डवेयानां शतशोऽथ सहस्रशः ॥७०॥
70. tatastena ninādena pratyabudhyanta dhanvinaḥ ,
śibire pāṇḍaveyānāṁ śataśo'tha sahasraśaḥ.

70. Then, by that sound, hundreds and thousands of archers in the camp of the Pāṇḍavas awoke.
सोऽच्छिनत्कस्यचित्पादौ जघनं चैव कस्यचित् ।
कांश्चिद्बिभेद पार्श्वेषु कालसृष्ट इवान्तकः ॥७१॥
71. so'cchinatkasyacitpādau jaghanaṁ caiva kasyacit ,
kāṁścidbibheda pārśveṣu kālasṛṣṭa ivāntakaḥ.
71. saḥ acchinat kasyacit pādau jaghanam ca eva kasyacit
kāṃścit bibheda pārśveṣu kāla sṛṣṭaḥ iva antakaḥ

71. He cut off someone's feet, and someone else's hip, and he pierced some in their sides, like Death (antaka) created by time.
अत्युग्रप्रतिपिष्टैश्च नदद्भिश्च भृशातुरैः ।
गजाश्वमथितैश्चान्यैर्मही कीर्णाभवत्प्रभो ॥७२॥
72. atyugrapratipiṣṭaiśca nadadbhiśca bhṛśāturaiḥ ,
gajāśvamathitaiścānyairmahī kīrṇābhavatprabho.
72. ati ugra prati piṣṭaiḥ ca nadadbhiḥ ca bhṛśa āturaiḥ
gaja aśva mathitaiḥ ca anyaiḥ mahī kīrṇā abhavat prabho

72. And by those crushed with extreme violence, and by those roaring and greatly distressed, and by others trampled by elephants and horses, the earth became covered, O Lord.
क्रोशतां किमिदं कोऽयं किं शब्दः किं नु किं कृतम् ।
एवं तेषां तदा द्रौणिरन्तकः समपद्यत ॥७३॥
73. krośatāṁ kimidaṁ ko'yaṁ kiṁ śabdaḥ kiṁ nu kiṁ kṛtam ,
evaṁ teṣāṁ tadā drauṇirantakaḥ samapadyata.

kṛtam evam teṣām tadā drauṇiḥ antakaḥ samapadyata

73. As they cried out, asking, 'What is this? Who is this? What is this sound? What indeed? What has been done?', Drauṇi then became death (antaka) for them.
अपेतशस्त्रसंनाहान्संरब्धान्पाण्डुसृञ्जयान् ।
प्राहिणोन्मृत्युलोकाय द्रौणिः प्रहरतां वरः ॥७४॥
74. apetaśastrasaṁnāhānsaṁrabdhānpāṇḍusṛñjayān ,
prāhiṇonmṛtyulokāya drauṇiḥ praharatāṁ varaḥ.

74. Drauṇi, the best among attackers, dispatched to the realm of death (mṛtyuloka) those Pāṇḍavas and Sṛñjayas who were disarmed and frantic.
ततस्तच्छस्त्रवित्रस्ता उत्पतन्तो भयातुराः ।
निद्रान्धा नष्टसंज्ञाश्च तत्र तत्र निलिल्यिरे ॥७५॥
75. tatastacchastravitrastā utpatanto bhayāturāḥ ,
nidrāndhā naṣṭasaṁjñāśca tatra tatra nililyire.

75. Then, terrified by those weapons, panic-stricken and attempting to flee, those who were blinded by sleep and had lost their senses scattered and hid themselves here and there.
ऊरुस्तम्भगृहीताश्च कश्मलाभिहतौजसः ।
विनदन्तो भृशं त्रस्ताः संन्यपेषन्परस्परम् ॥७६॥
76. ūrustambhagṛhītāśca kaśmalābhihataujasaḥ ,
vinadanto bhṛśaṁ trastāḥ saṁnyapeṣanparasparam.

76. And, seized by paralysis of the thighs, with their strength destroyed by bewilderment, they cried out loudly, exceedingly terrified, and trampled each other.
ततो रथं पुनर्द्रौणिरास्थितो भीमनिस्वनम् ।
धनुष्पाणिः शरैरन्यान्प्रेषयद्वै यमक्षयम् ॥७७॥
77. tato rathaṁ punardrauṇirāsthito bhīmanisvanam ,
dhanuṣpāṇiḥ śarairanyānpreṣayadvai yamakṣayam.

77. Droṇi, having mounted his chariot again, which produced a formidable sound, and holding his bow in hand, then sent other warriors to the abode of Yama (Yama-kṣaya) with his arrows.
पुनरुत्पततः कांश्चिद्दूरादपि नरोत्तमान् ।
शूरान्संपततश्चान्यान्कालरात्र्यै न्यवेदयत् ॥७८॥
78. punarutpatataḥ kāṁściddūrādapi narottamān ,
śūrānsaṁpatataścānyānkālarātryai nyavedayat.

78. Again, he offered some excellent men (narottama) who were leaping up, and other brave warriors (śūra) who were rushing forward, even from a distance, to Kalaratri, the night of cosmic dissolution.
तथैव स्यन्दनाग्रेण प्रमथन्स विधावति ।
शरवर्षैश्च विविधैरवर्षच्छात्रवांस्ततः ॥७९॥
79. tathaiva syandanāgreṇa pramathansa vidhāvati ,
śaravarṣaiśca vividhairavarṣacchātravāṁstataḥ.

śaravarṣaiḥ ca vividhaiḥ avarṣat śātravān tataḥ

79. In the same manner, he ran forward, crushing (pramathan) with the front of his chariot, and then, with diverse showers of arrows, he rained upon his enemies (śātravān).
पुनश्च सुविचित्रेण शतचन्द्रेण चर्मणा ।
तेन चाकाशवर्णेन तदाचरत सोऽसिना ॥८०॥
80. punaśca suvicitreṇa śatacandreṇa carmaṇā ,
tena cākāśavarṇena tadācarata so'sinā.

80. And again, he then fought with a very wonderfully embellished shield (carman) marked with a hundred moons (śatachandra), and with that sky-colored sword (asi).
तथा स शिबिरं तेषां द्रौणिराहवदुर्मदः ।
व्यक्षोभयत राजेन्द्र महाह्रदमिव द्विपः ॥८१॥
81. tathā sa śibiraṁ teṣāṁ drauṇirāhavadurmadaḥ ,
vyakṣobhayata rājendra mahāhradamiva dvipaḥ.

81. O king, just as an elephant agitates a great lake, so did Drona's son (Drauṇi), intoxicated with battle, disturb their camp.
उत्पेतुस्तेन शब्देन योधा राजन्विचेतसः ।
निद्रार्ताश्च भयार्ताश्च व्यधावन्त ततस्ततः ॥८२॥
82. utpetustena śabdena yodhā rājanvicetasaḥ ,
nidrārtāśca bhayārtāśca vyadhāvanta tatastataḥ.

82. O king, at that sound, the bewildered warriors sprang up, both afflicted by sleep and terrified, and ran about in every direction.
विस्वरं चुक्रुशुश्चान्ये बह्वबद्धं तथावदन् ।
न च स्म प्रतिपद्यन्ते शस्त्राणि वसनानि च ॥८३॥
83. visvaraṁ cukruśuścānye bahvabaddhaṁ tathāvadan ,
na ca sma pratipadyante śastrāṇi vasanāni ca.
83. visvaram cukruśuḥ ca anye bahu abaddham tathā
avadan na ca sma pratipadyante śastrāṇi vasanāni ca

83. And others shrieked discordantly and spoke much nonsense. They were unable to find their weapons or their clothes.
विमुक्तकेशाश्चाप्यन्ये नाभ्यजानन्परस्परम् ।
उत्पतन्तः परे भीताः केचित्तत्र तथाभ्रमन् ।
पुरीषमसृजन्केचित्केचिन्मूत्रं प्रसुस्रुवुः ॥८४॥
84. vimuktakeśāścāpyanye nābhyajānanparasparam ,
utpatantaḥ pare bhītāḥ kecittatra tathābhraman ,
purīṣamasṛjankecitkecinmūtraṁ prasusruvuḥ.

parasparam utpatantaḥ pare bhītāḥ

84. And some others, with dishevelled hair, could not even recognize each other. Some of the terrified ones sprang up and wandered about there in confusion. Others discharged feces, and still others released urine.
बन्धनानि च राजेन्द्र संछिद्य तुरगा द्विपाः ।
समं पर्यपतंश्चान्ये कुर्वन्तो महदाकुलम् ॥८५॥
85. bandhanāni ca rājendra saṁchidya turagā dvipāḥ ,
samaṁ paryapataṁścānye kurvanto mahadākulam.

85. O best of kings, having broken their bonds, horses, elephants, and other creatures simultaneously ran about, causing great confusion.
तत्र केचिन्नरा भीता व्यलीयन्त महीतले ।
तथैव तान्निपतितानपिंषन्गजवाजिनः ॥८६॥
86. tatra kecinnarā bhītā vyalīyanta mahītale ,

86. There, some frightened men hid themselves on the ground. Similarly, elephants and horses crushed those who had fallen.
तस्मिंस्तथा वर्तमाने रक्षांसि पुरुषर्षभ ।
तृप्तानि व्यनदन्नुच्चैर्मुदा भरतसत्तम ॥८७॥
87. tasmiṁstathā vartamāne rakṣāṁsi puruṣarṣabha ,
tṛptāni vyanadannuccairmudā bharatasattama.

87. O best among men, O foremost of Bharatas, while that situation was thus unfolding, the satisfied rākṣasas roared loudly with joy.
स शब्दः प्रेरितो राजन्भूतसंघैर्मुदा युतैः ।
अपूरयद्दिशः सर्वा दिवं चापि महास्वनः ॥८८॥
88. sa śabdaḥ prerito rājanbhūtasaṁghairmudā yutaiḥ ,
apūrayaddiśaḥ sarvā divaṁ cāpi mahāsvanaḥ.

88. O King, that great sound (mahāsvana), produced by the joyful hosts of beings, filled all directions and also the sky.
तेषामार्तस्वरं श्रुत्वा वित्रस्ता गजवाजिनः ।
मुक्ताः पर्यपतन्राजन्मृद्नन्तः शिबिरे जनम् ॥८९॥
89. teṣāmārtasvaraṁ śrutvā vitrastā gajavājinaḥ ,
muktāḥ paryapatanrājanmṛdnantaḥ śibire janam.

89. O king, having heard their cry of distress, the terrified elephants and horses, now freed, rushed about, trampling the people in the camp.
तैस्तत्र परिधावद्भिश्चरणोदीरितं रजः ।
अकरोच्छिबिरे तेषां रजन्यां द्विगुणं तमः ॥९०॥
90. taistatra paridhāvadbhiścaraṇodīritaṁ rajaḥ ,
akarocchibire teṣāṁ rajanyāṁ dviguṇaṁ tamaḥ.

90. The dust, stirred up by the feet of those (animals) running about there, made the darkness in their camp twice as dense during the night.
तस्मिंस्तमसि संजाते प्रमूढाः सर्वतो जनाः ।
नाजानन्पितरः पुत्रान्भ्रातॄन्भ्रातर एव च ॥९१॥
91. tasmiṁstamasi saṁjāte pramūḍhāḥ sarvato janāḥ ,
nājānanpitaraḥ putrānbhrātṝnbhrātara eva ca.
91. tasmin tamasi saṃjāte pramūḍhāḥ sarvataḥ janāḥ na
ajānan pitaraḥ putrān bhrātṝn bhrātaraḥ eva ca

91. With that darkness having arisen, people everywhere became utterly bewildered. Fathers could not recognize their sons, nor could brothers recognize their brothers.
गजा गजानतिक्रम्य निर्मनुष्या हया हयान् ।
अताडयंस्तथाभञ्जंस्तथामृद्नंश्च भारत ॥९२॥
92. gajā gajānatikramya nirmanuṣyā hayā hayān ,
atāḍayaṁstathābhañjaṁstathāmṛdnaṁśca bhārata.

atāḍayan tathā abhañjan tathā amṛdnan ca bhārata

92. O Bhārata, the elephants trampled other elephants, and the riderless horses trampled other horses. They struck them, broke them, and crushed them.
ते भग्नाः प्रपतन्तश्च निघ्नन्तश्च परस्परम् ।
न्यपातयन्त च परान्पातयित्वा तथापिषन् ॥९३॥
93. te bhagnāḥ prapatantaśca nighnantaśca parasparam ,
nyapātayanta ca parānpātayitvā tathāpiṣan.

93. Those who were routed fell down, striking one another. They also caused others to fall and, having made them fall, they similarly crushed them.
विचेतसः सनिद्राश्च तमसा चावृता नराः ।
जघ्नुः स्वानेव तत्राथ कालेनाभिप्रचोदिताः ॥९४॥
94. vicetasaḥ sanidrāśca tamasā cāvṛtā narāḥ ,
jaghnuḥ svāneva tatrātha kālenābhipracoditāḥ.

94. Bewildered, drowsy, and overwhelmed by darkness (tamas), those men then killed their own people, driven by destiny (kāla).
त्यक्त्वा द्वाराणि च द्वाःस्थास्तथा गुल्मांश्च गौल्मिकाः ।
प्राद्रवन्त यथाशक्ति कांदिशीका विचेतसः ॥९५॥
95. tyaktvā dvārāṇi ca dvāḥsthāstathā gulmāṁśca gaulmikāḥ ,
prādravanta yathāśakti kāṁdiśīkā vicetasaḥ.

95. The gatekeepers, abandoning their posts at the gates, and likewise the commanders, abandoning their units, fled as fast as they could, bewildered and panic-stricken.
विप्रनष्टाश्च तेऽन्योन्यं नाजानन्त तदा विभो ।
क्रोशन्तस्तात पुत्रेति दैवोपहतचेतसः ॥९६॥
96. vipranaṣṭāśca te'nyonyaṁ nājānanta tadā vibho ,
krośantastāta putreti daivopahatacetasaḥ.
96. vipranaṣṭāḥ ca te anyonyam na ajānanta tadā
vibho krośantaḥ tāta putra iti daivopahatacetasaḥ

96. And those men were utterly lost, O great one (vibhu), no longer recognizing one another at that time. With their minds overwhelmed by destiny, they cried out, 'Father!' and 'Son!'
पलायतां दिशस्तेषां स्वानप्युत्सृज्य बान्धवान् ।
गोत्रनामभिरन्योन्यमाक्रन्दन्त ततो जनाः ॥९७॥
97. palāyatāṁ diśasteṣāṁ svānapyutsṛjya bāndhavān ,
gotranāmabhiranyonyamākrandanta tato janāḥ.
97. palāyatām diśaḥ teṣām svān api utsṛjya bāndhavān
gotranāmabhiḥ anyonyam ākrandanta tataḥ janāḥ

97. Then, abandoning even their own relatives, those people fled in all directions, crying out to each other by their family names.
हाहाकारं च कुर्वाणाः पृथिव्यां शेरते परे ।
तान्बुद्ध्वा रणमत्तोऽसौ द्रोणपुत्रो व्यपोथयत् ॥९८॥
98. hāhākāraṁ ca kurvāṇāḥ pṛthivyāṁ śerate pare ,
tānbuddhvā raṇamatto'sau droṇaputro vyapothayat.
98. hāhākāram ca kurvāṇāḥ pṛthivyām śerate pare tān
buddhvā raṇamattaḥ asau droṇaputraḥ vyapothayat

98. Others, crying out in lamentation, lay on the ground. Recognizing them, the son of Droṇa, who was intoxicated by battle, crushed them.
तत्रापरे वध्यमाना मुहुर्मुहुरचेतसः ।
शिबिरान्निष्पतन्ति स्म क्षत्रिया भयपीडिताः ॥९९॥
99. tatrāpare vadhyamānā muhurmuhuracetasaḥ ,
śibirānniṣpatanti sma kṣatriyā bhayapīḍitāḥ.
99. tatra apare vadhyamānāḥ muhuḥ muhuḥ acetasaḥ
śibirāt niṣpatanti sma kṣatriyāḥ bhayapīḍitāḥ

99. There, other warriors, repeatedly being slain, unconscious and afflicted by fear, were fleeing from the camp.
तांस्तु निष्पततस्त्रस्ताञ्शिबिराञ्जीवितैषिणः ।
कृतवर्मा कृपश्चैव द्वारदेशे निजघ्नतुः ॥१००॥
100. tāṁstu niṣpatatastrastāñśibirāñjīvitaiṣiṇaḥ ,
kṛtavarmā kṛpaścaiva dvāradeśe nijaghnatuḥ.
100. tān tu niṣpatataḥ trastān śibirāt jīvitaiṣiṇaḥ

100. But Kṛtavarmā and Kṛpa struck down, at the gate, those terrified individuals who, desiring to live, were fleeing from the camp.
विशस्त्रयन्त्रकवचान्मुक्तकेशान्कृताञ्जलीन् ।
वेपमानान्क्षितौ भीतान्नैव कांश्चिदमुञ्चताम् ॥१०१॥
101. viśastrayantrakavacānmuktakeśānkṛtāñjalīn ,
vepamānānkṣitau bhītānnaiva kāṁścidamuñcatām.
101. viśastra-yantra-kavacān mukta-keśān kṛtāñjalīn
vepamānān kṣitau bhītān na eva kāṁścit amuñcatām
101. तयोः (implied) कांश्चित् विशस्त्रयन्त्रकवचान् मुक्तकेशान्
कृताञ्जलीन् वेपमानान् क्षितौ भीतान् न एव अमुञ्चताम्
101. They (the two) did not spare anyone who was without weapons, devices, or armor, with loose hair, hands folded in supplication (kṛtāñjalīn), trembling, and terrified on the ground.
नामुच्यत तयोः कश्चिन्निष्क्रान्तः शिबिराद्बहिः ।
कृपस्य च महाराज हार्दिक्यस्य च दुर्मतेः ॥१०२॥
102. nāmucyata tayoḥ kaścinniṣkrāntaḥ śibirādbahiḥ ,
kṛpasya ca mahārāja hārdikyasya ca durmateḥ.
102. na amucyata tayoḥ kaścit niṣkrāntaḥ śibirāt
bahiḥ kṛpasya ca mahārāja hārdikyasya ca durmateḥ
102. महाराज,
शिबिरात् बहिः निष्क्रान्तः कश्चित् तयोः कृपस्य च दुर्मतेः हार्दिक्यस्य च न अमुच्यत।
102. O great king, no one who had left the camp was spared by those two, Kṛpa and the evil-minded Hārdikya (Kṛtavarman).
भूयश्चैव चिकीर्षन्तौ द्रोणपुत्रस्य तौ प्रियम् ।
त्रिषु देशेषु ददतुः शिबिरस्य हुताशनम् ॥१०३॥
103. bhūyaścaiva cikīrṣantau droṇaputrasya tau priyam ,
triṣu deśeṣu dadatuḥ śibirasya hutāśanam.

103. भूयः च एव द्रोणपुत्रस्य प्रियम् चिकीर्षन्तौ तौ त्रिषु देशेषu शिबिरस्य हुताशनम् ददतुः।
103. Moreover, those two, intending to please Droṇa's son (Aśvatthāmā), set fire to the camp in three places.
ततः प्रकाशे शिबिरे खड्गेन पितृनन्दनः ।
अश्वत्थामा महाराज व्यचरत्कृतहस्तवत् ॥१०४॥
104. tataḥ prakāśe śibire khaḍgena pitṛnandanaḥ ,
aśvatthāmā mahārāja vyacaratkṛtahastavat.

104. महाराज,
ततः पितृनन्दनः अश्वत्थामा प्रकाशे शिबिरे खड्गेन कृतहस्तवत् व्यचरत्।
104. Then, O great king, in the illuminated camp, Aśvatthāmā, the son who delights his father, moved about with his sword like a skilled warrior.
कांश्चिदापततो वीरानपरांश्च प्रधावतः ।
व्ययोजयत खड्गेन प्राणैर्द्विजवरो नरान् ॥१०५॥
105. kāṁścidāpatato vīrānaparāṁśca pradhāvataḥ ,
vyayojayata khaḍgena prāṇairdvijavaro narān.
105. kāṃścit āpatataḥ vīrān aparān ca pradhāvataḥ
vyayojayat khaḍgena prāṇaiḥ dvijavaraḥ narān

105. The excellent Brahmin (dvijavara) with his sword separated some attacking warriors and others who were fleeing from their lives.
कांश्चिद्योधान्स खड्गेन मध्ये संछिद्य वीर्यवान् ।
अपातयद्द्रोणसुतः संरब्धस्तिलकाण्डवत् ॥१०६॥
106. kāṁścidyodhānsa khaḍgena madhye saṁchidya vīryavān ,
apātayaddroṇasutaḥ saṁrabdhastilakāṇḍavat.
106. kāṃścit yodhān saḥ khaḍgena madhye saṃchidya
vīryavān apātayat droṇasutaḥ saṃrabdhaḥ tilakāṇḍavat

106. That valorous and enraged son of Droṇa (Droṇasuta), having cut some warriors in the middle with his sword, made them fall like sesame stalks.
विनदद्भिर्भृशायस्तैर्नराश्वद्विरदोत्तमैः ।
पतितैरभवत्कीर्णा मेदिनी भरतर्षभ ॥१०७॥
107. vinadadbhirbhṛśāyastairnarāśvadviradottamaiḥ ,
patitairabhavatkīrṇā medinī bharatarṣabha.
107. vinadadbhiḥ bhṛśāyastaiḥ narāśvadviradottamaiḥ
patitaiḥ abhavat kīrṇā medinī bharatarṣabha

107. O best of Bharatas, the earth (medinī) became strewn with fallen men, horses, and excellent elephants, who were roaring and utterly exhausted.
मानुषाणां सहस्रेषु हतेषु पतितेषु च ।
उदतिष्ठन्कबन्धानि बहून्युत्थाय चापतन् ॥१०८॥
108. mānuṣāṇāṁ sahasreṣu hateṣu patiteṣu ca ,
udatiṣṭhankabandhāni bahūnyutthāya cāpatan.
108. mānuṣāṇām sahasreṣu hateṣu patiteṣu ca

108. Among the thousands of men who were slain and fallen, many headless trunks (kabandhas) rose up, and having stood up, they then fell down.
सायुधान्साङ्गदान्बाहून्निचकर्त शिरांसि च ।
हस्तिहस्तोपमानूरून्हस्तान्पादांश्च भारत ॥१०९॥
109. sāyudhānsāṅgadānbāhūnnicakarta śirāṁsi ca ,
hastihastopamānūrūnhastānpādāṁśca bhārata.

109. O Bhārata, he cut off arms that were equipped with weapons and armlets, along with heads, and also thighs resembling elephant trunks, hands, and feet.
पृष्ठच्छिन्नाञ्शिरश्छिन्नान्पार्श्वच्छिन्नांस्तथापरान् ।
समासाद्याकरोद्द्रौणिः कांश्चिच्चापि पराङ्मुखान् ॥११०॥
110. pṛṣṭhacchinnāñśiraśchinnānpārśvacchinnāṁstathāparān ,
samāsādyākaroddrauṇiḥ kāṁściccāpi parāṅmukhān.
110. pṛṣṭhacchinnān śiraśchinnān pārśvacchinnān tathā aparān
samāsādya akarot drauṇiḥ kāṃścit ca api parāṅmukhān

110. Having approached them, Drauṇi cut some at their backs, some at their heads, and others at their sides. He also made some turn and flee.
मध्यकायान्नरानन्यांश्चिच्छेदान्यांश्च कर्णतः ।
अंसदेशे निहत्यान्यान्काये प्रावेशयच्छिरः ॥१११॥
111. madhyakāyānnarānanyāṁścicchedānyāṁśca karṇataḥ ,
aṁsadeśe nihatyānyānkāye prāveśayacchiraḥ.

aṃsadeśe nihatya anyān kāye prāveśayat śiras
111. (saḥ) anyān narān madhyakāyān ciccheda anyān ca karṇataḥ

111. He cut other men through their midsections, and others at their ears. Striking some others in the shoulder region, he drove their heads into their bodies.
एवं विचरतस्तस्य निघ्नतः सुबहून्नरान् ।
तमसा रजनी घोरा बभौ दारुणदर्शना ॥११२॥
112. evaṁ vicaratastasya nighnataḥ subahūnnarān ,
tamasā rajanī ghorā babhau dāruṇadarśanā.

112. As he was thus ranging about, striking down very many men, the dreadful night appeared, terrifying to behold due to the darkness.
किंचित्प्राणैश्च पुरुषैर्हतैश्चान्यैः सहस्रशः ।
बहुना च गजाश्वेन भूरभूद्भीमदर्शना ॥११३॥
113. kiṁcitprāṇaiśca puruṣairhataiścānyaiḥ sahasraśaḥ ,
bahunā ca gajāśvena bhūrabhūdbhīmadarśanā.
113. kiñcit prāṇaiḥ ca puruṣaiḥ hataiḥ ca anyaiḥ sahasraśaḥ
| bahunā ca gajāśvena bhūḥ abhūt bhīmadarśanā
113. bhūḥ kiñcit prāṇaiḥ ca puruṣaiḥ ca anyaiḥ sahasraśaḥ hataiḥ ca bahunā gajāśvena bhīmadarśanā abhūt.
113. With many lives [lost], and by thousands of slain men (puruṣa) and others, and with numerous elephants and horses, the earth became a terrifying sight.
यक्षरक्षःसमाकीर्णे रथाश्वद्विपदारुणे ।
क्रुद्धेन द्रोणपुत्रेण संछिन्नाः प्रापतन्भुवि ॥११४॥
114. yakṣarakṣaḥsamākīrṇe rathāśvadvipadāruṇe ,
kruddhena droṇaputreṇa saṁchinnāḥ prāpatanbhuvi.
114. yakṣarakṣasamākīrṇe rathāśvadvipadāruṇe |
kruddhena droṇaputreṇa saṃchinnāḥ prāpatan bhuvi
114. kruddhena droṇaputreṇa yakṣarakṣasamākīrṇe rathāśvadvipadāruṇe (kṣetre) saṃchinnāḥ (narāḥ) bhuvi prāpatan.
114. On that field, which was made terrifying by chariots, horses, and elephants, and filled with Yakṣas and Rākṣasas [who feast on the dead], [warriors], cut down by the enraged son of Droṇa, fell to the ground.
मातॄरन्ये पितॄनन्ये भ्रातॄनन्ये विचुक्रुशुः ।
केचिदूचुर्न तत्क्रुद्धैर्धार्तराष्ट्रैः कृतं रणे ॥११५॥
115. mātṝranye pitṝnanye bhrātṝnanye vicukruśuḥ ,
kecidūcurna tatkruddhairdhārtarāṣṭraiḥ kṛtaṁ raṇe.
115. mātṝn anye pitṝn anye bhrātṝn anye vicukruśuḥ |
kecit ūcuḥ na tat kruddhaiḥ dhārtarāṣṭraiḥ kṛtam raṇe
115. anye mātṝn vicukruśuḥ,
anye pitṝn,
anye bhrātṝn (vicukruśuḥ).
kecit (ca) ūcuḥ (yat) tat raṇe kruddhaiḥ dhārtarāṣṭraiḥ na kṛtam (idam).
115. Some wailed for their mothers, others for their fathers, and still others for their brothers. Some (among them) said, 'This was not done in battle by the enraged Dhṛtarāṣṭras (Dhārtarāṣṭras).'
यत्कृतं नः प्रसुप्तानां रक्षोभिः क्रूरकर्मभिः ।
असांनिध्याद्धि पार्थानामिदं नः कदनं कृतम् ॥११६॥
116. yatkṛtaṁ naḥ prasuptānāṁ rakṣobhiḥ krūrakarmabhiḥ ,
asāṁnidhyāddhi pārthānāmidaṁ naḥ kadanaṁ kṛtam.
116. yat kṛtam naḥ prasuptānām rakṣobhiḥ krūrakarmabhiḥ

116. What was inflicted upon us while we were asleep, as if by cruel-acting Rākṣasas - this slaughter was indeed wrought upon us due to the absence of the Pārthas.
न देवासुरगन्धर्वैर्न यक्षैर्न च राक्षसैः ।
शक्यो विजेतुं कौन्तेयो गोप्ता यस्य जनार्दनः ॥११७॥
117. na devāsuragandharvairna yakṣairna ca rākṣasaiḥ ,
śakyo vijetuṁ kaunteyo goptā yasya janārdanaḥ.

117. Arjuna (Kaunteya), whose protector is Janardana (Krishna), cannot be conquered by devas, asuras, gandharvas, yakṣas, or rākṣasas.
ब्रह्मण्यः सत्यवाग्दान्तः सर्वभूतानुकम्पकः ।
न च सुप्तं प्रमत्तं वा न्यस्तशस्त्रं कृताञ्जलिम् ।
धावन्तं मुक्तकेशं वा हन्ति पार्थो धनंजयः ॥११८॥
118. brahmaṇyaḥ satyavāgdāntaḥ sarvabhūtānukampakaḥ ,
na ca suptaṁ pramattaṁ vā nyastaśastraṁ kṛtāñjalim ,
dhāvantaṁ muktakeśaṁ vā hanti pārtho dhanaṁjayaḥ.
118. brahmaṇyaḥ satyavāk dāntaḥ sarvabhūtānukampakaḥ

118. pārthaḥ dhanañjayaḥ brahmaṇyaḥ satyavāk dāntaḥ sarvabhūtānukampakaḥ (asti).
ca saḥ suptam vā pramattam nyastaśastram kṛtāñjalim dhāvantam vā muktakeśam na hanti
118. Partha (Arjuna) Dhananjaya is devoted to the Absolute (brahman), truthful in speech, self-controlled, and compassionate to all beings. He does not kill one who is asleep, heedless, has laid down their weapons, has folded hands (in supplication), is fleeing, or has disheveled hair.
तदिदं नः कृतं घोरं रक्षोभिः क्रूरकर्मभिः ।
इति लालप्यमानाः स्म शेरते बहवो जनाः ॥११९॥
119. tadidaṁ naḥ kṛtaṁ ghoraṁ rakṣobhiḥ krūrakarmabhiḥ ,
iti lālapyamānāḥ sma śerate bahavo janāḥ.

119. "This terrible act was committed against us by the cruel-acting rākṣasas!" Many people lay down, lamenting repeatedly in this manner.
स्तनतां च मनुष्याणामपरेषां च कूजताम् ।
ततो मुहूर्तात्प्राशाम्यत्स शब्दस्तुमुलो महान् ॥१२०॥
120. stanatāṁ ca manuṣyāṇāmapareṣāṁ ca kūjatām ,
tato muhūrtātprāśāmyatsa śabdastumulo mahān.

muhūrtāt prāśāmyat saḥ śabdaḥ tumulaḥ mahān

120. Amidst the roaring of men and the cries of others, that great tumultuous sound then completely subsided within a moment.
शोणितव्यतिषिक्तायां वसुधायां च भूमिप ।
तद्रजस्तुमुलं घोरं क्षणेनान्तरधीयत ॥१२१॥
121. śoṇitavyatiṣiktāyāṁ vasudhāyāṁ ca bhūmipa ,
tadrajastumulaṁ ghoraṁ kṣaṇenāntaradhīyata.

121. O king, that fierce and turbulent dust, [which had risen] on the blood-soaked earth, disappeared in a moment.
संवेष्टमानानुद्विग्नान्निरुत्साहान्सहस्रशः ।
न्यपातयन्नरान्क्रुद्धः पशून्पशुपतिर्यथा ॥१२२॥
122. saṁveṣṭamānānudvignānnirutsāhānsahasraśaḥ ,
nyapātayannarānkruddhaḥ paśūnpaśupatiryathā.
122. saṃveṣṭamānān udvignān nirutsāhān sahasraśaḥ
nyapātayat narān kruddhaḥ paśūn paśupatiḥ yathā

122. The enraged one felled thousands of men who were rolling, agitated, and devoid of enthusiasm, just as the lord of animals (Paśupati) [destroys] animals.
अन्योन्यं संपरिष्वज्य शयानान्द्रवतोऽपरान् ।
संलीनान्युध्यमानांश्च सर्वान्द्रौणिरपोथयत् ॥१२३॥
123. anyonyaṁ saṁpariṣvajya śayānāndravato'parān ,
saṁlīnānyudhyamānāṁśca sarvāndrauṇirapothayat.

123. Droṇi crushed all of them: those embracing each other, others lying down, those fleeing, those hiding, and those fighting.
दह्यमाना हुताशेन वध्यमानाश्च तेन ते ।
परस्परं तदा योधा अनयन्यमसादनम् ॥१२४॥
124. dahyamānā hutāśena vadhyamānāśca tena te ,
parasparaṁ tadā yodhā anayanyamasādanam.

124. Then, those warriors, [who were already] being consumed by fire and being slain by him (Droṇi), mutually sent each other to the abode of Yama.
तस्या रजन्यास्त्वर्धेन पाण्डवानां महद्बलम् ।
गमयामास राजेन्द्र द्रौणिर्यमनिवेशनम् ॥१२५॥
125. tasyā rajanyāstvardhena pāṇḍavānāṁ mahadbalam ,
gamayāmāsa rājendra drauṇiryamaniveśanam.

125. O king of kings, in just half of that night, Droṇa's son (Aśvatthāman) sent the mighty army of the Pāṇḍavas to the abode of Yama (death).
निशाचराणां सत्त्वानां स रात्रिर्हर्षवर्धिनी ।
आसीन्नरगजाश्वानां रौद्री क्षयकरी भृशम् ॥१२६॥
126. niśācarāṇāṁ sattvānāṁ sa rātrirharṣavardhinī ,
āsīnnaragajāśvānāṁ raudrī kṣayakarī bhṛśam.
126. niśācarāṇām sattvānām sā rātriḥ harṣa-vardhinī
āsīt nara-gaja-aśvānām raudrī kṣaya-karī bhṛśam

126. That night was indeed a joy-increasing one for the night-roaming beings, but for men, elephants, and horses, it was exceedingly dreadful and destructive.
तत्रादृश्यन्त रक्षांसि पिशाचाश्च पृथग्विधाः ।
खादन्तो नरमांसानि पिबन्तः शोणितानि च ॥१२७॥
127. tatrādṛśyanta rakṣāṁsi piśācāśca pṛthagvidhāḥ ,
khādanto naramāṁsāni pibantaḥ śoṇitāni ca.
127. tatra adṛśyanta rakṣāṃsi piśācāḥ ca pṛthak-vidhāḥ
khādantaḥ nara-māṃsāni pibantaḥ śoṇitāni ca

127. There, Rākṣasas (demons) and various kinds of Piśācas (goblins) were seen, eating human flesh and drinking blood.
करालाः पिङ्गला रौद्राः शैलदन्ता रजस्वलाः ।
जटिला दीर्घसक्थाश्च पञ्चपादा महोदराः ॥१२८॥
128. karālāḥ piṅgalā raudrāḥ śailadantā rajasvalāḥ ,
jaṭilā dīrghasakthāśca pañcapādā mahodarāḥ.

128. (These Rākṣasas and Piśācas were) dreadful, tawny, fierce, with teeth like rocks, dusty or blood-stained, matted-haired, long-legged, five-footed, and huge-bellied.
पश्चादङ्गुलयो रूक्षा विरूपा भैरवस्वनाः ।
घटजानवोऽतिह्रस्वाश्च नीलकण्ठा विभीषणाः ॥१२९॥
129. paścādaṅgulayo rūkṣā virūpā bhairavasvanāḥ ,
ghaṭajānavo'tihrasvāśca nīlakaṇṭhā vibhīṣaṇāḥ.

129. Their fingers were rough and deformed, their roars dreadful. They had pot-like knees, were extremely short, and were blue-throated and terrifying.
सपुत्रदाराः सुक्रूरा दुर्दर्शनसुनिर्घृणाः ।
विविधानि च रूपाणि तत्रादृश्यन्त रक्षसाम् ॥१३०॥
130. saputradārāḥ sukrūrā durdarśanasunirghṛṇāḥ ,
vividhāni ca rūpāṇi tatrādṛśyanta rakṣasām.

130. They were with their wives and children, exceedingly cruel, unpleasant to behold, and utterly merciless. There, various forms of the rakshasas were seen.
पीत्वा च शोणितं हृष्टाः प्रानृत्यन्गणशोऽपरे ।
इदं वरमिदं मेध्यमिदं स्वाद्विति चाब्रुवन् ॥१३१॥
131. pītvā ca śoṇitaṁ hṛṣṭāḥ prānṛtyangaṇaśo'pare ,
idaṁ varamidaṁ medhyamidaṁ svādviti cābruvan.

131. Having drunk the blood, others, delighted, danced in groups. And they exclaimed, "This is excellent! This is pure! This is delicious!"
मेदोमज्जास्थिरक्तानां वसानां च भृशाशिताः ।
परमांसानि खादन्तः क्रव्यादा मांसजीविनः ॥१३२॥
132. medomajjāsthiraktānāṁ vasānāṁ ca bhṛśāśitāḥ ,
paramāṁsāni khādantaḥ kravyādā māṁsajīvinaḥ.

132. They were excessively gorged on fat, marrow, bones, blood, and vital fluids. Devouring the flesh of others, these carnivores lived by eating meat.
वसां चाप्यपरे पीत्वा पर्यधावन्विकुक्षिलाः ।
नानावक्त्रास्तथा रौद्राः क्रव्यादाः पिशिताशिनः ॥१३३॥
133. vasāṁ cāpyapare pītvā paryadhāvanvikukṣilāḥ ,
nānāvaktrāstathā raudrāḥ kravyādāḥ piśitāśinaḥ.
133. vasām ca api apare pītvā pari adhāvan vikukṣilāḥ
nānāvaktraḥ tathā raudrāḥ kravyādāḥ piśitāśinaḥ
133. apare ca api vasām pītvā vikukṣilāḥ pari adhāvan.

133. And others, having drunk the fat, ran around with distended bellies. They had various faces, were terrible, ate raw flesh, and consumed meat.
अयुतानि च तत्रासन्प्रयुतान्यर्बुदानि च ।
रक्षसां घोररूपाणां महतां क्रूरकर्मणाम् ॥१३४॥
134. ayutāni ca tatrāsanprayutānyarbudāni ca ,
rakṣasāṁ ghorarūpāṇāṁ mahatāṁ krūrakarmaṇām.

134. There were tens of thousands, millions, and hundreds of millions of rākṣasas there, who were of terrifying appearance, mighty, and performed cruel deeds.
मुदितानां वितृप्तानां तस्मिन्महति वैशसे ।
समेतानि बहून्यासन्भूतानि च जनाधिप ॥१३५॥
135. muditānāṁ vitṛptānāṁ tasminmahati vaiśase ,
sametāni bahūnyāsanbhūtāni ca janādhipa.

135. Among those who were delighted and thoroughly satisfied, many beings, O lord of men, were also assembled in that great slaughter.
प्रत्यूषकाले शिबिरात्प्रतिगन्तुमियेष सः ।
नृशोणितावसिक्तस्य द्रौणेरासीदसित्सरुः ।
पाणिना सह संश्लिष्ट एकीभूत इव प्रभो ॥१३६॥
136. pratyūṣakāle śibirātpratigantumiyeṣa saḥ ,
nṛśoṇitāvasiktasya drauṇerāsīdasitsaruḥ ,
pāṇinā saha saṁśliṣṭa ekībhūta iva prabho.

136. At dawn, he (Aśvatthāman) wished to return from the camp. O lord, Drauṇi's (sword), which was soaked in human blood and had a black hilt, was stuck to his hand as if it had become one with it.
स निःशेषानरीन्कृत्वा विरराज जनक्षये ।
युगान्ते सर्वभूतानि भस्म कृत्वेव पावकः ॥१३७॥
137. sa niḥśeṣānarīnkṛtvā virarāja janakṣaye ,
yugānte sarvabhūtāni bhasma kṛtveva pāvakaḥ.
137. saḥ niḥśeṣān arīn kṛtvā virarāja janakṣaye |
yugānte sarvabhūtāni bhasma kṛtvā iva pāvakaḥ

137. Having completely eliminated his enemies, he shone brightly amidst the destruction of people, just as fire (pāvaka) at the end of an eon (yugānta) reduces all beings to ashes.
यथाप्रतिज्ञं तत्कर्म कृत्वा द्रौणायनिः प्रभो ।
दुर्गमां पदवीं कृत्वा पितुरासीद्गतज्वरः ॥१३८॥
138. yathāpratijñaṁ tatkarma kṛtvā drauṇāyaniḥ prabho ,
durgamāṁ padavīṁ kṛtvā piturāsīdgatajvaraḥ.

138. O lord (prabho), the son of Droṇa (Drauṇāyaniḥ), having performed that deed as promised, and having secured an inaccessible path to heaven for his father, became free from distress.
यथैव संसुप्तजने शिबिरे प्राविशन्निशि ।
तथैव हत्वा निःशब्दे निश्चक्राम नरर्षभः ॥१३९॥
139. yathaiva saṁsuptajane śibire prāviśanniśi ,
tathaiva hatvā niḥśabde niścakrāma nararṣabhaḥ.

139. Just as he entered the camp at night when people were fast asleep, so too, having slain (the enemies), the bull among men (naraṛṣabha) exited in silence.
निष्क्रम्य शिबिरात्तस्मात्ताभ्यां संगम्य वीर्यवान् ।
आचख्यौ कर्म तत्सर्वं हृष्टः संहर्षयन्विभो ॥१४०॥
140. niṣkramya śibirāttasmāttābhyāṁ saṁgamya vīryavān ,
ācakhyau karma tatsarvaṁ hṛṣṭaḥ saṁharṣayanvibho.
140. niṣkramya śibirāt tasmāt tābhyām saṅgamya vīryavān
| ācakhyau karma tat sarvam hṛṣṭaḥ saṃharṣayan vibho
140. vibho,
vīryavān tasmāt śibirāt niṣkramya,

hṛṣṭaḥ saṃharṣayan tat sarvam karma ācakhyau
140. O lord (vibho), the mighty one (Aśvatthāman), having exited from that camp and having met with those two (Kṛpa and Kṛtavarman), narrated all of that deed, delighted and gladdening (them).
तावप्याचख्यतुस्तस्मै प्रियं प्रियकरौ तदा ।
पाञ्चालान्सृञ्जयांश्चैव विनिकृत्तान्सहस्रशः ।
प्रीत्या चोच्चैरुदक्रोशंस्तथैवास्फोटयंस्तलान् ॥१४१॥
141. tāvapyācakhyatustasmai priyaṁ priyakarau tadā ,
pāñcālānsṛñjayāṁścaiva vinikṛttānsahasraśaḥ ,
prītyā coccairudakrośaṁstathaivāsphoṭayaṁstalān.
141. tau api ācakhyatuḥ tasmai priyam
priyakarau tadā pāñcālān sṛñjayān ca eva
vinikṛttān sahasraśaḥ prītyā ca uccaiḥ
udakrośan tathā eva āsphoṭayan talān

141. Then, those two pleasing individuals recounted to him the pleasant news that the Pañcālas and Sṛñjayas had been annihilated by the thousands. With joy, they also cried out loudly and similarly clapped their hands.
एवंविधा हि सा रात्रिः सोमकानां जनक्षये ।
प्रसुप्तानां प्रमत्तानामासीत्सुभृशदारुणा ॥१४२॥
142. evaṁvidhā hi sā rātriḥ somakānāṁ janakṣaye ,
prasuptānāṁ pramattānāmāsītsubhṛśadāruṇā.

142. Indeed, such was that night for the Somakas, a night marked by the annihilation of their people. For those who were asleep and heedless, it proved to be exceedingly dreadful.
असंशयं हि कालस्य पर्यायो दुरतिक्रमः ।
तादृशा निहता यत्र कृत्वास्माकं जनक्षयम् ॥१४३॥
143. asaṁśayaṁ hi kālasya paryāyo duratikramaḥ ,
tādṛśā nihatā yatra kṛtvāsmākaṁ janakṣayam.

143. Indeed, without doubt, the course of time is irresistible, a turn of events where such powerful individuals, after causing the annihilation of our people, were themselves slain.
धृतराष्ट्र उवाच ।
प्रागेव सुमहत्कर्म द्रौणिरेतन्महारथः ।
नाकरोदीदृशं कस्मान्मत्पुत्रविजये धृतः ॥१४४॥
144. dhṛtarāṣṭra uvāca ,
prāgeva sumahatkarma drauṇiretanmahārathaḥ ,
nākarodīdṛśaṁ kasmānmatputravijaye dhṛtaḥ.
144. dhṛtarāṣṭra uvāca prāk eva sumahat karma drauṇiḥ etat
mahārathaḥ na akarot īdṛśam kasmāt matputravijaye dhṛtaḥ
144. dhṛtarāṣṭra uvāca kasmāt mahārathaḥ drauṇiḥ etat sumahat
īdṛśam karma prāk eva matputravijaye dhṛtaḥ na akarot
144. Dhṛtarāṣṭra said: 'Why did Droṇi, this great warrior (mahāratha), not perform such a magnificent deed earlier, when he was engaged in securing the victory of my sons?'
अथ कस्माद्धते क्षत्रे कर्मेदं कृतवानसौ ।
द्रोणपुत्रो महेष्वासस्तन्मे शंसितुमर्हसि ॥१४५॥
145. atha kasmāddhate kṣatre karmedaṁ kṛtavānasau ,
droṇaputro maheṣvāsastanme śaṁsitumarhasi.
145. atha kasmāt hate kṣatre karma idam kṛtavān asau
droṇaputraḥ maheṣvāsaḥ tat me śaṃsitum arhasi
145. atha kasmāt asau droṇaputraḥ maheṣvāsaḥ hate
kṣatre idam karma kṛtavān tat me śaṃsitum arhasi
145. Now, why did Drona's son, the great archer, perform this deed (karma) after the warriors had been slain? You ought to explain that to me.
संजय उवाच ।
तेषां नूनं भयान्नासौ कृतवान्कुरुनन्दन ।
असांनिध्याद्धि पार्थानां केशवस्य च धीमतः ॥१४६॥
146. saṁjaya uvāca ,
teṣāṁ nūnaṁ bhayānnāsau kṛtavānkurunandana ,
asāṁnidhyāddhi pārthānāṁ keśavasya ca dhīmataḥ.
146. saṃjaya uvāca teṣām nūnam bhayāt na asau kṛtavān
kurunandana asāṃnidhyāt hi pārthānām keśavasya ca dhīmataḥ
146. saṃjaya uvāca kurunandana asau nūnam teṣām bhayāt na
kṛtavān hi pārthānām dhīmataḥ keśavasya ca asāṃnidhyāt
146. Saṃjaya said: O delight of the Kurus, he (Aśvatthāmā) surely did not perform that act out of fear of them. Indeed, it was due to the absence of the Pārthas and the intelligent Keśava (Kṛṣṇa).
सात्यकेश्चापि कर्मेदं द्रोणपुत्रेण साधितम् ।
न हि तेषां समक्षं तान्हन्यादपि मरुत्पतिः ॥१४७॥
147. sātyakeścāpi karmedaṁ droṇaputreṇa sādhitam ,
na hi teṣāṁ samakṣaṁ tānhanyādapi marutpatiḥ.
147. sātyakeḥ ca api karma idam droṇaputreṇa sādhitam
na hi teṣām samakṣam tān hanyāt api marutpatiḥ
147. ca api idam karma droṇaputreṇa sātyakeḥ sādhitam
hi teṣām samakṣam api marutpatiḥ tān na hanyāt
147. And this very deed (karma) was accomplished by Drona's son even in Sātyaki's absence. For indeed, not even the lord of the Maruts (Indra) would kill them in their presence.
एतदीदृशकं वृत्तं राजन्सुप्तजने विभो ।
ततो जनक्षयं कृत्वा पाण्डवानां महात्ययम् ।
दिष्ट्या दिष्ट्येति चान्योन्यं समेत्योचुर्महारथाः ॥१४८॥
148. etadīdṛśakaṁ vṛttaṁ rājansuptajane vibho ,
tato janakṣayaṁ kṛtvā pāṇḍavānāṁ mahātyayam ,
diṣṭyā diṣṭyeti cānyonyaṁ sametyocurmahārathāḥ.
148. etat īdṛśakam vṛttam rājan suptajane
vibho tataḥ janakṣayam kṛtvā
pāṇḍavānām mahātyayam diṣṭyā diṣṭyā iti
ca anyonyam sametya ūcuḥ mahārathāḥ
148. rājan vibho etat īdṛśakam vṛttam
suptajane tataḥ pāṇḍavānām janakṣayam
mahātyayam kṛtvā ca diṣṭyā diṣṭyā
iti anyonyam sametya mahārathāḥ ūcuḥ
148. O King, O mighty one, such was this event among sleeping people. Then, having caused the destruction of the people - a great calamity for the Pāṇḍavas - the great warriors, having come together, exclaimed to each other, 'Fortunately! Fortunately!'
पर्यष्वजत्ततो द्रौणिस्ताभ्यां च प्रतिनन्दितः ।
इदं हर्षाच्च सुमहदाददे वाक्यमुत्तमम् ॥१४९॥
149. paryaṣvajattato drauṇistābhyāṁ ca pratinanditaḥ ,
idaṁ harṣācca sumahadādade vākyamuttamam.
149. paryaṣvajad tataḥ drauṇiḥ tābhyām ca pratinanditaḥ
idam harṣāt ca sumahat ādade vākyam uttamam
149. tataḥ drauṇiḥ tābhyām ca pratinanditaḥ paryaṣvajad
ca harṣāt idam sumahat uttamam vākyam ādade
149. Then Drauṇi embraced them, and having been greeted in return by them, he joyfully uttered these excellent and very significant words.
पाञ्चाला निहताः सर्वे द्रौपदेयाश्च सर्वशः ।
सोमका मत्स्यशेषाश्च सर्वे विनिहता मया ॥१५०॥
150. pāñcālā nihatāḥ sarve draupadeyāśca sarvaśaḥ ,
somakā matsyaśeṣāśca sarve vinihatā mayā.
150. pāñcālāḥ nihatāḥ sarve draupadeyāḥ ca sarvaśaḥ
somakāḥ matsyaśeṣāḥ ca sarve vinihatāḥ mayā
150. sarve pāñcālāḥ nihatāḥ ca sarvaśaḥ draupadeyāḥ
ca sarve somakāḥ matsyaśeṣāḥ mayā vinihatāḥ
150. All the Pañcālas have been killed, and all the sons of Draupadī entirely. All the Somakas and the remaining Matsyas have also been slain by me.
इदानीं कृतकृत्याः स्म याम तत्रैव माचिरम् ।
यदि जीवति नो राजा तस्मै शंसामहे प्रियम् ॥१५१॥
151. idānīṁ kṛtakṛtyāḥ sma yāma tatraiva māciram ,
yadi jīvati no rājā tasmai śaṁsāmahe priyam.
151. idānīm kṛtakṛtyāḥ sma yāma tatra eva mā ciram
yadi jīvati naḥ rājā tasmai śaṃsāmahe priyam
151. idānīm vayam kṛtakṛtyāḥ sma mā ciram tatra eva
yāma yadi naḥ rājā jīvati tasmai priyam śaṃsāmahe
151. Now we have accomplished our purpose; let us go there without delay. If our king is still alive, we shall announce the good news to him.
