वैशंपायन उवाच ।
तथैव राजा कौन्तेयो धर्मपुत्रो युधिष्ठिरः ।
धृष्टद्युम्नमुखान्वीरांश्चोदयामास भारत ॥१॥
1. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
tathaiva rājā kaunteyo dharmaputro yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ,

1. Vaiśampāyana said: "Similarly, King Yudhiṣṭhira, the son of Kuntī and son of Dharma (dharma), dispatched the heroes headed by Dhṛṣṭadyumna, O Bhārata."
चेदिकाशिकरूषाणां नेतारं दृढविक्रमम् ।
सेनापतिममित्रघ्नं धृष्टकेतुमथादिशत् ॥२॥
2. cedikāśikarūṣāṇāṁ netāraṁ dṛḍhavikramam ,
senāpatimamitraghnaṁ dhṛṣṭaketumathādiśat.
2. cedi-kāśi-karūṣāṇām netāram dṛḍha-vikramam
senāpatim amitra-ghnam dhṛṣṭaketum atha ādiśat
2. atha (saḥ) dhṛṣṭaketum cedi-kāśi-karūṣāṇām netāram dṛḍha-vikramam amitra-ghnam senāpatim ādiśat.
2. Then he appointed Dhṛṣṭaketu, the steadfastly valiant leader of the Chedis, Kāśis, and Karūṣas, and the slayer of enemies, as commander of the army.
विराटं द्रुपदं चैव युयुधानं शिखण्डिनम् ।
पाञ्चाल्यौ च महेष्वासौ युधामन्यूत्तमौजसौ ॥३॥
3. virāṭaṁ drupadaṁ caiva yuyudhānaṁ śikhaṇḍinam ,
pāñcālyau ca maheṣvāsau yudhāmanyūttamaujasau.

3. He saw Virata, Drupada, Yuyudhana, and Shikhandi; and also the two great archer Pañcāla princes, Yudhāmanyu and Uttamaujas.
ते शूराश्चित्रवर्माणस्तप्तकुण्डलधारिणः ।
आज्यावसिक्ता ज्वलिता धिष्ण्येष्विव हुताशनाः ।
अशोभन्त महेष्वासा ग्रहाः प्रज्वलिता इव ॥४॥
4. te śūrāścitravarmāṇastaptakuṇḍaladhāriṇaḥ ,
ājyāvasiktā jvalitā dhiṣṇyeṣviva hutāśanāḥ ,
aśobhanta maheṣvāsā grahāḥ prajvalitā iva.
4. te śūrāḥ citravarmāṇaḥ taptakuṇḍaladhāriṇaḥ
ājyāvasiktāḥ jvalitāḥ

4. te śūrāḥ citravarmāṇaḥ taptakuṇḍaladhāriṇaḥ ājyāvasiktāḥ jvalitāḥ hutāśanāḥ dhiṣṇyeṣu iva aśobhanta.
maheṣvāsāḥ prajvalitāḥ grahāḥ iva
4. Those heroes, wearing splendid armor and gleaming earrings, shone like blazing fires drenched with ghee on sacrificial altars. Those great archers truly gleamed like resplendent planets.
सोऽथ सैन्यं यथायोगं पूजयित्वा नरर्षभः ।
दिदेश तान्यनीकानि प्रयाणाय महीपतिः ॥५॥
5. so'tha sainyaṁ yathāyogaṁ pūjayitvā nararṣabhaḥ ,
dideśa tānyanīkāni prayāṇāya mahīpatiḥ.
5. saḥ atha sainyam yathāyogam pūjayitvā nararṣabhaḥ
didiśa tāni anīkāni prayāṇāya mahīpatiḥ
5. saḥ nararṣabhaḥ mahīpatiḥ atha sainyam yathāyogam
pūjayitvā tāni anīkāni prayāṇāya didiśa
5. That lord of the earth (mahīpatiḥ), the best among men (nararṣabhaḥ), then, after suitably honoring his army, ordered those divisions to march for departure.
अभिमन्युं बृहन्तं च द्रौपदेयांश्च सर्वशः ।
धृष्टद्युम्नमुखानेतान्प्राहिणोत्पाण्डुनन्दनः ॥६॥
6. abhimanyuṁ bṛhantaṁ ca draupadeyāṁśca sarvaśaḥ ,
dhṛṣṭadyumnamukhānetānprāhiṇotpāṇḍunandanaḥ.
6. abhimanyum bṛhantam ca draupadeyān ca sarvaśaḥ
dhṛṣṭadyumnamukhān etān prāhiṇot pāṇḍunandanaḥ

6. The son of Pāṇḍu (pāṇḍunandanaḥ) dispatched Abhimanyu, Bṛhanta, all the sons of Draupadī, and these (warriors) led by Dhṛṣṭadyumna.
भीमं च युयुधानं च पाण्डवं च धनंजयम् ।
द्वितीयं प्रेषयामास बलस्कन्धं युधिष्ठिरः ॥७॥
7. bhīmaṁ ca yuyudhānaṁ ca pāṇḍavaṁ ca dhanaṁjayam ,
dvitīyaṁ preṣayāmāsa balaskandhaṁ yudhiṣṭhiraḥ.

7. Yudhishthira dispatched Bhima, Yuyudhana, and the Pandava Dhananjaya (Arjuna) as a second division of the army (balaskandha).
भाण्डं समारोपयतां चरतां संप्रधावताम् ।
हृष्टानां तत्र योधानां शब्दो दिवमिवास्पृशत् ॥८॥
8. bhāṇḍaṁ samāropayatāṁ caratāṁ saṁpradhāvatām ,
hṛṣṭānāṁ tatra yodhānāṁ śabdo divamivāspṛśat.

hṛṣṭānām tatra yodhānām śabdaḥ divam iva aspṛśat

8. The sound of the joyous warriors there - those loading equipment, moving about, and running swiftly - seemed to touch the sky.
स्वयमेव ततः पश्चाद्विराटद्रुपदान्वितः ।
तथान्यैः पृथिवीपालैः सह प्रायान्महीपतिः ॥९॥
9. svayameva tataḥ paścādvirāṭadrupadānvitaḥ ,
tathānyaiḥ pṛthivīpālaiḥ saha prāyānmahīpatiḥ.
9. svayam eva tataḥ paścāt virāṭadrupadaanvitaḥ
tathā anyaiḥ pṛthivīpālaiḥ saha prāyāt mahīpatiḥ
9. tataḥ paścāt mahīpatiḥ svayam eva virāṭadrupadaanvitaḥ
tathā anyaiḥ pṛthivīpālaiḥ saha prāyāt
9. Thereafter, the king himself (mahipati), accompanied by Virata and Drupada, and together with other rulers, proceeded.
भीमधन्वायनी सेना धृष्टद्युम्नपुरस्कृता ।
गङ्गेव पूर्णा स्तिमिता स्यन्दमाना व्यदृश्यत ॥१०॥
10. bhīmadhanvāyanī senā dhṛṣṭadyumnapuraskṛtā ,
gaṅgeva pūrṇā stimitā syandamānā vyadṛśyata.
10. bhīmadhanvāyinī senā dhṛṣṭadyumnapuraskṛtā
gaṅgā iva pūrṇā stimitā syandamānā vyadṛśyata
10. dhṛṣṭadyumnapuraskṛtā bhīmadhanvāyinī senā

10. The army (senā) of Bhimadhanva (Bhima, the formidable bowman), led by Dhrishtadyumna, appeared like the full, tranquil, yet flowing Ganga river.
ततः पुनरनीकानि व्ययोजयत बुद्धिमान् ।
मोहयन्धृतराष्ट्रस्य पुत्राणां बुद्धिनिस्रवम् ॥११॥
11. tataḥ punaranīkāni vyayojayata buddhimān ,
mohayandhṛtarāṣṭrasya putrāṇāṁ buddhinisravam.
11. tataḥ punaḥ anīkāni vyayojayat buddhimān
mohayan dhṛtarāṣṭrasya putrāṇām buddhinisravam
11. tataḥ buddhimān punaḥ anīkāni vyayojayat

11. Then, the intelligent one again deployed his armies, bewildering the discernment of Dhṛtarāṣṭra's sons.
द्रौपदेयान्महेष्वासानभिमन्युं च पाण्डवः ।
नकुलं सहदेवं च सर्वांश्चैव प्रभद्रकान् ॥१२॥
12. draupadeyānmaheṣvāsānabhimanyuṁ ca pāṇḍavaḥ ,
nakulaṁ sahadevaṁ ca sarvāṁścaiva prabhadrakān.
12. draupadeyān maheṣvāsān abhimanyum ca pāṇḍavaḥ
nakulam sahadevam ca sarvān ca eva prabhadrkān
12. pāṇḍavaḥ draupadeyān maheṣvāsān abhimanyum ca

12. The Pāṇḍava (Yudhiṣṭhira) arrayed the great archers, the sons of Draupadī, and Abhimanyu, and Nakula, and Sahadeva, and indeed all the Prābhadrakas.
दश चाश्वसहस्राणि द्विसाहस्रं च दन्तिनः ।
अयुतं च पदातीनां रथाः पञ्चशतास्तथा ॥१३॥
13. daśa cāśvasahasrāṇi dvisāhasraṁ ca dantinaḥ ,
ayutaṁ ca padātīnāṁ rathāḥ pañcaśatāstathā.
13. daśa ca aśvasahasrāṇi dvisāhasram ca dantinaḥ
ayutam ca padātīnām rathāḥ pañcaśatāḥ tathā
13. daśa ca aśvasahasrāṇi dvisāhasram ca dantinaḥ
ayutam ca padātīnām tathā pañcaśatāḥ rathāḥ
13. And ten thousand cavalry, and two thousand elephants, and ten thousand infantry, and similarly, five hundred chariots (were deployed).
भीमसेनं च दुर्धर्षं प्रथमं प्रादिशद्बलम् ।
मध्यमे तु विराटं च जयत्सेनं च मागधम् ॥१४॥
14. bhīmasenaṁ ca durdharṣaṁ prathamaṁ prādiśadbalam ,
madhyame tu virāṭaṁ ca jayatsenaṁ ca māgadham.

madhyame tu virāṭam ca jayatsenam ca māgadham
14. ca durdharṣam bhīmasenam prathamam balam prādiśat

14. He assigned the formidable Bhīmasena to the vanguard force. And in the middle, he assigned Virāṭa and Jayatsena, the Magadha king.
महारथौ च पाञ्चाल्यौ युधामन्यूत्तमौजसौ ।
वीर्यवन्तौ महात्मानौ गदाकार्मुकधारिणौ ।
अन्वयातां ततो मध्ये वासुदेवधनंजयौ ॥१५॥
15. mahārathau ca pāñcālyau yudhāmanyūttamaujasau ,
vīryavantau mahātmānau gadākārmukadhāriṇau ,
anvayātāṁ tato madhye vāsudevadhanaṁjayau.

15. And the two great chariot-warriors, Yudhāmanyu and Uttamaujas, who were both sons of Pāñcāla, valorous, great-souled (mahātman), and bearing maces and bows, then followed between Vāsudeva (Krishna) and Dhanañjaya (Arjuna).
बभूवुरतिसंरब्धाः कृतप्रहरणा नराः ।
तेषां विंशतिसाहस्रा ध्वजाः शूरैरधिष्ठिताः ॥१६॥
16. babhūvuratisaṁrabdhāḥ kṛtapraharaṇā narāḥ ,
teṣāṁ viṁśatisāhasrā dhvajāḥ śūrairadhiṣṭhitāḥ.
16. babhūvuḥ atisaṃrabdhāḥ kṛtapraharaṇāḥ narāḥ
teṣām viṃśatisāhasrāḥ dhvajāḥ śūraiḥ adhiṣṭhitāḥ
16. narāḥ kṛtapraharaṇāḥ atisaṃrabdhāḥ babhūvuḥ
teṣām viṃśatisāhasrāḥ dhvajāḥ śūraiḥ adhiṣṭhitāḥ
16. The warriors, having launched their attack, became exceedingly furious. Of them, twenty thousand banners were manned by heroes.
पञ्च नागसहस्राणि रथवंशाश्च सर्वशः ।
पदातयश्च ये शूराः कार्मुकासिगदाधराः ।
सहस्रशोऽन्वयुः पश्चादग्रतश्च सहस्रशः ॥१७॥
17. pañca nāgasahasrāṇi rathavaṁśāśca sarvaśaḥ ,
padātayaśca ye śūrāḥ kārmukāsigadādharāḥ ,
sahasraśo'nvayuḥ paścādagrataśca sahasraśaḥ.
17. pañca nāgasahasrāṇi rathavaṃśāḥ ca
sarvaśaḥ padātayaḥ ca ye śūrāḥ
kārmukāsigadādharāḥ sahasraśaḥ
anvayuḥ paścāt agrataḥ ca sahasraśaḥ
17. pañca nāgasahasrāṇi ca sarvaśaḥ
rathavaṃśāḥ ca ye kārmukāsigadādharāḥ
śūrāḥ padātayaḥ sahasraśaḥ
paścāt ca sahasraśaḥ agrataḥ anvayuḥ
17. Five thousand elephants, and lines of chariots everywhere, as well as the brave foot soldiers who carried bows, swords, and maces - they followed in thousands, both behind and in front.
युधिष्ठिरो यत्र सैन्ये स्वयमेव बलार्णवे ।
तत्र ते पृथिवीपाला भूयिष्ठं पर्यवस्थिताः ॥१८॥
18. yudhiṣṭhiro yatra sainye svayameva balārṇave ,
tatra te pṛthivīpālā bhūyiṣṭhaṁ paryavasthitāḥ.

tatra te pṛthivīpālāḥ bhūyiṣṭhaṃ paryavasthitāḥ

18. Where Yudhiṣṭhira himself was present in that ocean-like army, there those kings were predominantly stationed.
तत्र नागसहस्राणि हयानामयुतानि च ।
तथा रथसहस्राणि पदातीनां च भारत ।
यदाश्रित्याभियुयुधे धार्तराष्ट्रं सुयोधनम् ॥१९॥
19. tatra nāgasahasrāṇi hayānāmayutāni ca ,
tathā rathasahasrāṇi padātīnāṁ ca bhārata ,
yadāśrityābhiyuyudhe dhārtarāṣṭraṁ suyodhanam.
19. tatra nāgasahasrāṇi hayānām ayutāni
ca tathā rathasahasrāṇi
padātīnām ca bhārata yat āśritya
abhiyuyudhe dhārtarāṣṭram suyodhanam
19. bhārata tatra nāgasahasrāṇi hayānām

19. O Bhārata, relying on thousands of elephants, tens of thousands of horses, and similarly, thousands of chariots and foot soldiers, Suyodhana fought against Dhṛtarāṣṭra's son.
ततोऽन्ये शतशः पश्चात्सहस्रायुतशो नराः ।
नदन्तः प्रययुस्तेषामनीकानि सहस्रशः ॥२०॥
20. tato'nye śataśaḥ paścātsahasrāyutaśo narāḥ ,
nadantaḥ prayayusteṣāmanīkāni sahasraśaḥ.
20. tataḥ anye śataśaḥ paścāt sahasrāyutaśaḥ narāḥ
nadantaḥ prayayuḥ teṣām anīkāni sahasraśaḥ
20. tataḥ śataśaḥ sahasrāyutaśaḥ paścāt anye narāḥ
nadantaḥ prayayuḥ teṣām anīkāni sahasraśaḥ
20. Then, other men, in hundreds and in thousands and tens of thousands, who were following behind, advanced roaring. Their armies were also by thousands.
तत्र भेरीसहस्राणि शङ्खानामयुतानि च ।
वादयन्ति स्म संहृष्टाः सहस्रायुतशो नराः ॥२१॥
21. tatra bherīsahasrāṇi śaṅkhānāmayutāni ca ,
vādayanti sma saṁhṛṣṭāḥ sahasrāyutaśo narāḥ.
21. tatra bherīsahasrāṇi śaṅkhānām ayutāni ca
vādayanti sma saṃhṛṣṭāḥ sahasrāyutaśaḥ narāḥ

21. There, thousands of drums and tens of thousands of conch shells were played by exultant men, who were present in thousands and tens of thousands.
