वैशंपायन उवाच ।
इङ्गितेनैव दाशार्हस्तमभिप्रायमादितः ।
द्रौणेर्बुद्ध्वा महाबाहुरर्जुनं प्रत्यभाषत ॥१॥
1. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
iṅgitenaiva dāśārhastamabhiprāyamāditaḥ ,
drauṇerbuddhvā mahābāhurarjunaṁ pratyabhāṣata.

1. Vaiśampāyana said: The mighty-armed (Krishna), a descendant of Daśārha, having understood Droṇa's son's intention from the very beginning merely by a hint, then spoke to Arjuna.
अर्जुनार्जुन यद्दिव्यमस्त्रं ते हृदि वर्तते ।
द्रोणोपदिष्टं तस्यायं कालः संप्रति पाण्डव ॥२॥
2. arjunārjuna yaddivyamastraṁ te hṛdi vartate ,
droṇopadiṣṭaṁ tasyāyaṁ kālaḥ saṁprati pāṇḍava.
2. arjuna arjuna yat divyam astram te hṛdi vartate
droṇopadiṣṭam tasya ayam kālaḥ samprati pāṇḍava
2. arjuna arjuna pāṇḍava te hṛdi yat droṇopadiṣṭam
divyam astram vartate tasya ayam kālaḥ samprati
2. Arjuna, Arjuna! The divine weapon residing in your heart, which was taught by Droṇa – this is its moment now, O Pāṇḍava.
भ्रातॄणामात्मनश्चैव परित्राणाय भारत ।
विसृजैतत्त्वमप्याजावस्त्रमस्त्रनिवारणम् ॥३॥
3. bhrātṝṇāmātmanaścaiva paritrāṇāya bhārata ,
visṛjaitattvamapyājāvastramastranivāraṇam.
3. bhrātṝṇām ātmanaḥ ca eva paritrāṇāya bhārata
visṛja etat tvam api ājau astram astranivāraṇam
3. bhārata bhrātṛṇām ātmanaḥ ca eva paritrāṇāya
tvam api ājau astranivāraṇam etat astram visṛja
3. O Bhārata (Arjuna), for the protection of your brothers and yourself (ātman), you too should release this weapon, which repels other weapons, in battle.
केशवेनैवमुक्तस्तु पाण्डवः परवीरहा ।
अवातरद्रथात्तूर्णं प्रगृह्य सशरं धनुः ॥४॥
4. keśavenaivamuktastu pāṇḍavaḥ paravīrahā ,
avātaradrathāttūrṇaṁ pragṛhya saśaraṁ dhanuḥ.
4. keśavena evam uktaḥ tu pāṇḍavaḥ paravīrahā
avātarat rathāt tūrṇam pragṛhya saśaram dhanuḥ
4. tu keśavena evam uktaḥ paravīrahā pāṇḍavaḥ
saśaram dhanuḥ pragṛhya tūrṇam rathāt avātarat
4. But the Pāṇḍava (Arjuna), slayer of enemy heroes, thus addressed by Keśava (Krishna), quickly descended from the chariot, grasping his bow with arrows.
पूर्वमाचार्यपुत्राय ततोऽनन्तरमात्मने ।
भ्रातृभ्यश्चैव सर्वेभ्यः स्वस्तीत्युक्त्वा परंतपः ॥५॥
5. pūrvamācāryaputrāya tato'nantaramātmane ,
bhrātṛbhyaścaiva sarvebhyaḥ svastītyuktvā paraṁtapaḥ.
5. pūrvam ācāryaputrāya tataḥ anantaram ātmane bhrātṛbhyaḥ
ca eva sarvebhyaḥ svasti iti uktvā paraṃtapaḥ
5. paraṃtapaḥ pūrvam ācāryaputrāya tataḥ anantaram
ātmane ca eva sarvebhyaḥ bhrātṛbhyaḥ svasti iti uktvā
5. Having first said "blessings be" (svasti) to the preceptor's son, then immediately afterwards to himself (ātman), and also to all his brothers, the tormentor of foes (Arjuna) then...
देवताभ्यो नमस्कृत्य गुरुभ्यश्चैव सर्वशः ।
उत्ससर्ज शिवं ध्यायन्नस्त्रमस्त्रेण शाम्यताम् ॥६॥
6. devatābhyo namaskṛtya gurubhyaścaiva sarvaśaḥ ,
utsasarja śivaṁ dhyāyannastramastreṇa śāmyatām.
6. devatābhyaḥ namaskṛtya gurubhyaḥ ca eva sarvaśaḥ
utsasarja śivam dhyāyan astram astreṇa śāmyatām
6. devatābhyaḥ ca eva sarvaśaḥ gurubhyaḥ namaskṛtya
śivam dhyāyan astram utsasarja (iti) astreṇa śāmyatām
6. Having bowed to the deities and indeed to all the preceptors (guru) in every way, he (Arjuna) released the weapon, meditating (dhyāna) on Śiva, (thinking) "May this weapon be appeased by (my) weapon."
ततस्तदस्त्रं सहसा सृष्टं गाण्डीवधन्वना ।
प्रजज्वाल महार्चिष्मद्युगान्तानलसंनिभम् ॥७॥
7. tatastadastraṁ sahasā sṛṣṭaṁ gāṇḍīvadhanvanā ,
prajajvāla mahārciṣmadyugāntānalasaṁnibham.
7. tataḥ tat astram sahasā sṛṣṭam gāṇḍīvadhanvanā
prajajvāla mahārciṣmat yugāntānalasaṃnibham
7. gāṇḍīvadhanvanā sahasā sṛṣṭam tat astram tataḥ
mahārciṣmat yugāntānalasaṃnibham prajajvāla
7. Then that weapon, suddenly released by Arjuna, the wielder of the Gāṇḍīva bow, blazed with immense flames, resembling the cosmic fire at the dissolution of an age.
तथैव द्रोणपुत्रस्य तदस्त्रं तिग्मतेजसः ।
प्रजज्वाल महाज्वालं तेजोमण्डलसंवृतम् ॥८॥
8. tathaiva droṇaputrasya tadastraṁ tigmatejasaḥ ,
prajajvāla mahājvālaṁ tejomaṇḍalasaṁvṛtam.
8. tathā eva droṇaputrasya tat astram tigmatejasaḥ
prajajvāla mahājvālam tejomaṇḍalasaṃvṛtam
8. tathā eva tigmatejasaḥ droṇaputrasya tat astram
mahājvālam tejomaṇḍalasaṃvṛtam prajajvāla
8. And similarly, that weapon of Droṇa's son (Aśvatthāman), possessing fierce radiance, blazed with enormous flames, enveloped by a circle of light.
निर्घाता बहवश्चासन्पेतुरुल्काः सहस्रशः ।
महद्भयं च भूतानां सर्वेषां समजायत ॥९॥
9. nirghātā bahavaścāsanpeturulkāḥ sahasraśaḥ ,
mahadbhayaṁ ca bhūtānāṁ sarveṣāṁ samajāyata.
9. nirghātāḥ bahavaḥ ca āsan petuḥ ulkāḥ sahasraśaḥ
mahat bhayam ca bhūtānām sarveṣām samajāyata
9. bahavaḥ nirghātāḥ ca āsan sahasraśaḥ ulkāḥ petuḥ
ca sarveṣām bhūtānām mahat bhayam samajāyata
9. Many thunderbolts occurred, and thousands of meteors fell. A great fear also arose among all creatures (bhūta).
सशब्दमभवद्व्योम ज्वालामालाकुलं भृशम् ।
चचाल च मही कृत्स्ना सपर्वतवनद्रुमा ॥१०॥
10. saśabdamabhavadvyoma jvālāmālākulaṁ bhṛśam ,
cacāla ca mahī kṛtsnā saparvatavanadrumā.
10. saśabdam abhavat vyoma jvālāmālāākulam bhṛśam
cacāla ca mahī kṛtsnā saparvatavanadrumā
10. vyoma saśabdam jvālāmālāākulam bhṛśam abhavat
ca kṛtsnā saparvatavanadrumā mahī cacāla
10. The sky became filled with sound and intensely agitated by garlands of flames. And the entire earth (mahī), along with its mountains, forests, and trees, trembled.
ते अस्त्रे तेजसा लोकांस्तापयन्ती व्यवस्थिते ।
महर्षी सहितौ तत्र दर्शयामासतुस्तदा ॥११॥
11. te astre tejasā lokāṁstāpayantī vyavasthite ,
maharṣī sahitau tatra darśayāmāsatustadā.
11. te astre tejasā lokān tāpayantī vyavastite
maharṣī sahitau tatra darśayāmāsatuḥ tadā
11. te astre tejasā lokān tāpayantī vyavastite
tadā tatra maharṣī sahitau darśayāmāsatuḥ
11. As those two weapons, deployed and scorching the worlds with their fierce power, the two great sages appeared there together at that time.
नारदः स च धर्मात्मा भरतानां पितामहः ।
उभौ शमयितुं वीरौ भारद्वाजधनंजयौ ॥१२॥
12. nāradaḥ sa ca dharmātmā bharatānāṁ pitāmahaḥ ,
ubhau śamayituṁ vīrau bhāradvājadhanaṁjayau.
12. nāradaḥ sa ca dharmātmā bharatānām pitāmahaḥ
ubhau śamayitum vīrau bhāradvājadhanañjayau
12. nāradaḥ sa ca dharmātmā bharatānām pitāmahaḥ
ubhau vīrau bhāradvājadhanañjayau śamayitum
12. And that righteous (dharma) Nārada, along with the venerable patriarch (pitāmaha) of the Bhāratas, appeared to pacify both heroes, Bharadvāja (Droṇa) and Dhanañjaya (Arjuna).
तौ मुनी सर्वधर्मज्ञौ सर्वभूतहितैषिणौ ।
दीप्तयोरस्त्रयोर्मध्ये स्थितौ परमतेजसौ ॥१३॥
13. tau munī sarvadharmajñau sarvabhūtahitaiṣiṇau ,
dīptayorastrayormadhye sthitau paramatejasau.
13. tau munī sarvadharmajñau sarvabhūtahitaiṣiṇau
dīptayoḥ astrayoḥ madhye sthitau paramatejasau
13. tau munī sarvadharmajñau sarvabhūtahitaiṣiṇau
paramatejasau dīptayoḥ astrayoḥ madhye sthitau
13. Those two sages, who knew all aspects of natural law (dharma) and desired the welfare of all beings, stood with supreme spiritual power amidst the two blazing weapons.
तदन्तरमनाधृष्यावुपगम्य यशस्विनौ ।
आस्तामृषिवरौ तत्र ज्वलिताविव पावकौ ॥१४॥
14. tadantaramanādhṛṣyāvupagamya yaśasvinau ,
āstāmṛṣivarau tatra jvalitāviva pāvakau.
14. tat anantaram anādhṛṣyau upagamya yaśasvinau
āstām ṛṣivarau tatra jvalitau iva pāvakau
14. tat anantaram yaśasvinau anādhṛṣyau ṛṣivarau
upagamya tatra jvalitau pāvakau iva āstām
14. Then, having approached, those two unassailable and glorious foremost sages (ṛṣivara) were present there, appearing like two blazing fires.
प्राणभृद्भिरनाधृष्यौ देवदानवसंमतौ ।
अस्त्रतेजः शमयितुं लोकानां हितकाम्यया ॥१५॥
15. prāṇabhṛdbhiranādhṛṣyau devadānavasaṁmatau ,
astratejaḥ śamayituṁ lokānāṁ hitakāmyayā.
15. prāṇabhṛdbhiḥ anādhṛṣyau devadānavasaṃmatau
astratejaḥ śamayitum lokānām hitakāmyayā
15. prāṇabhṛdbhiḥ anādhṛṣyau devadānavasaṃmatau
lokānām hitakāmyayā astratejaḥ śamayitum
15. Unassailable by any living beings, and revered by both gods and demons, they [came] to pacify the power of the weapon, out of a desire for the welfare of the worlds.
ऋषी ऊचतुः ।
नानाशस्त्रविदः पूर्वे येऽप्यतीता महारथाः ।
नैतदस्त्रं मनुष्येषु तैः प्रयुक्तं कथंचन ॥१६॥
16. ṛṣī ūcatuḥ ,
nānāśastravidaḥ pūrve ye'pyatītā mahārathāḥ ,
naitadastraṁ manuṣyeṣu taiḥ prayuktaṁ kathaṁcana.
16. ṛṣī ūcatuḥ nānāśastravidaḥ pūrve ye api atītāḥ mahārathāḥ
na etat astram manuṣyeṣu taiḥ prayuktam kathaṃcana
16. ṛṣī ūcatuḥ pūrve nānāśastravidaḥ ye api atītāḥ mahārathāḥ
taiḥ manuṣyeṣu etat astram kathaṃcana na prayuktam
16. The two sages said: "This weapon was never used among humans by any of the great charioteers (mahārathāḥ) of the past, even those who were expert in various weapons."
