भीष्म उवाच ।
ततो रात्र्यां व्यतीतायां प्रतिबुद्धोऽस्मि भारत ।
तं च संचिन्त्य वै स्वप्नमवापं हर्षमुत्तमम् ॥१॥
1. bhīṣma uvāca ,
tato rātryāṁ vyatītāyāṁ pratibuddho'smi bhārata ,
taṁ ca saṁcintya vai svapnamavāpaṁ harṣamuttamam.

aham pratibuddhaḥ asmi ca taṃ svapnam saṃcintya,
vai uttamam harṣam avāpam
1. Bhishma said: O descendant of Bharata, after that night had passed, I awoke. And reflecting upon that dream, I experienced the greatest joy.
ततः समभवद्युद्धं मम तस्य च भारत ।
तुमुलं सर्वभूतानां लोमहर्षणमद्भुतम् ॥२॥
2. tataḥ samabhavadyuddhaṁ mama tasya ca bhārata ,
tumulaṁ sarvabhūtānāṁ lomaharṣaṇamadbhutam.
ततो बाणमयं वर्षं ववर्ष मयि भार्गवः ।
न्यवारयमहं तं च शरजालेन भारत ॥३॥
3. tato bāṇamayaṁ varṣaṁ vavarṣa mayi bhārgavaḥ ,
nyavārayamahaṁ taṁ ca śarajālena bhārata.
ततः परमसंक्रुद्धः पुनरेव महातपाः ।
ह्यस्तनेनैव कोपेन शक्तिं वै प्राहिणोन्मयि ॥४॥
4. tataḥ paramasaṁkruddhaḥ punareva mahātapāḥ ,
hyastanenaiva kopena śaktiṁ vai prāhiṇonmayi.
इन्द्राशनिसमस्पर्शां यमदण्डोपमप्रभाम् ।
ज्वलन्तीमग्निवत्संख्ये लेलिहानां समन्ततः ॥५॥
5. indrāśanisamasparśāṁ yamadaṇḍopamaprabhām ,
jvalantīmagnivatsaṁkhye lelihānāṁ samantataḥ.
ततो भरतशार्दूल धिष्ण्यमाकाशगं यथा ।
सा मामभ्यहनत्तूर्णमंसदेशे च भारत ॥६॥
6. tato bharataśārdūla dhiṣṇyamākāśagaṁ yathā ,
sā māmabhyahanattūrṇamaṁsadeśe ca bhārata.
अथासृङ्मेऽस्रवद्घोरं गिरेर्गैरिकधातुवत् ।
रामेण सुमहाबाहो क्षतस्य क्षतजेक्षण ॥७॥
7. athāsṛṅme'sravadghoraṁ girergairikadhātuvat ,
rāmeṇa sumahābāho kṣatasya kṣatajekṣaṇa.
ततोऽहं जामदग्न्याय भृशं क्रोधसमन्वितः ।
प्रेषयं मृत्युसंकाशं बाणं सर्पविषोपमम् ॥८॥
8. tato'haṁ jāmadagnyāya bhṛśaṁ krodhasamanvitaḥ ,
preṣayaṁ mṛtyusaṁkāśaṁ bāṇaṁ sarpaviṣopamam.
स तेनाभिहतो वीरो ललाटे द्विजसत्तमः ।
अशोभत महाराज सशृङ्ग इव पर्वतः ॥९॥
9. sa tenābhihato vīro lalāṭe dvijasattamaḥ ,
aśobhata mahārāja saśṛṅga iva parvataḥ.
स संरब्धः समावृत्य बाणं कालान्तकोपमम् ।
संदधे बलवत्कृष्य घोरं शत्रुनिबर्हणम् ॥१०॥
10. sa saṁrabdhaḥ samāvṛtya bāṇaṁ kālāntakopamam ,
saṁdadhe balavatkṛṣya ghoraṁ śatrunibarhaṇam.
10. saḥ saṃrabdhaḥ samāvṛtya bāṇam kālāntakopamam
saṃdadhe balavat kṛṣya ghoram śatrunibarhaṇam
10. saḥ saṃrabdhaḥ kālāntakopamam bāṇam samāvṛtya,
balavat kṛṣya,
ghoram śatrunibarhaṇam saṃdadhe
10. Enraged, he seized an arrow, which resembled the god of death (kālāntaka), and powerfully drawing (his bow), he fixed that terrible, enemy-destroying (arrow).
स वक्षसि पपातोग्रः शरो व्याल इव श्वसन् ।
महीं राजंस्ततश्चाहमगच्छं रुधिराविलः ॥११॥
11. sa vakṣasi papātograḥ śaro vyāla iva śvasan ,
mahīṁ rājaṁstataścāhamagacchaṁ rudhirāvilaḥ.
11. saḥ vakṣasi papāta ugraḥ śaraḥ vyālaḥ iva śvasan
mahīm rājan tatas ca aham agacchaṃ rudhirāvilaḥ
11. rājan! saḥ ugraḥ śaraḥ vyālaḥ iva śvasan vakṣasi
papāta tatas ca aham rudhirāvilaḥ mahīm agacchaṃ
11. That fierce arrow fell upon his chest, hissing like a serpent. O King, after that, I, covered in blood, fell to the ground.
अवाप्य तु पुनः संज्ञां जामदग्न्याय धीमते ।
प्राहिण्वं विमलां शक्तिं ज्वलन्तीमशनीमिव ॥१२॥
12. avāpya tu punaḥ saṁjñāṁ jāmadagnyāya dhīmate ,
prāhiṇvaṁ vimalāṁ śaktiṁ jvalantīmaśanīmiva.
12. avāpya tu punar saṃjñām jāmadagnyāya dhīmate
prāhiṇvaṃ vimalām śaktim jvalantīm aśanīm iva
12. tu punar saṃjñām avāpya,
aham dhīmate jāmadagnyāya jvalantīm aśanīm iva vimalām śaktim prāhiṇvaṃ
12. But having regained my consciousness (saṃjñā) again, I sent a pure, blazing power (śakti), like a thunderbolt, to the intelligent Jāmadagnya (Parashurama).
सा तस्य द्विजमुख्यस्य निपपात भुजान्तरे ।
विह्वलश्चाभवद्राजन्वेपथुश्चैनमाविशत् ॥१३॥
13. sā tasya dvijamukhyasya nipapāta bhujāntare ,
vihvalaścābhavadrājanvepathuścainamāviśat.
13. sā tasya dvijamukhyasya nipapāta bhujāntare
vihvalaḥ ca abhavat rājan vepathuḥ ca enam āviśat
13. rājan! sā tasya dvijamukhyasya bhujāntare nipapāta
ca saḥ vihvalaḥ abhavat ca vepathuḥ enam āviśat
13. That (śakti) fell upon the space between the arms of that chief among the twice-born (dvijamukhya). O King, he became agitated, and a tremor seized him.
तत एनं परिष्वज्य सखा विप्रो महातपाः ।
अकृतव्रणः शुभैर्वाक्यैराश्वासयदनेकधा ॥१४॥
14. tata enaṁ pariṣvajya sakhā vipro mahātapāḥ ,
akṛtavraṇaḥ śubhairvākyairāśvāsayadanekadhā.
14. tata enam pariṣvajya sakhā vipraḥ mahātapaḥ
akṛtavraṇaḥ śubhaiḥ vākyaiḥ āśvāsayat anekadhā
14. tataḥ sakhā mahātapaḥ vipraḥ akṛtavraṇaḥ enam
pariṣvajya śubhaiḥ vākyaiḥ anekadhā āśvāsayat
14. Then, his friend, the great ascetic Brahmin Akṛtavraṇa, having embraced him, comforted him in many ways with auspicious words.
समाश्वस्तस्तदा रामः क्रोधामर्षसमन्वितः ।
प्रादुश्चक्रे तदा ब्राह्मं परमास्त्रं महाव्रतः ॥१५॥
15. samāśvastastadā rāmaḥ krodhāmarṣasamanvitaḥ ,
prāduścakre tadā brāhmaṁ paramāstraṁ mahāvrataḥ.
15. samāśvastaḥ tadā rāmaḥ krodhāmarṣasamanvitaḥ
prāduścakre tadā brāhmaṃ paramāstraṃ mahāvrataḥ
15. tadā samāśvastaḥ krodhāmarṣasamanvitaḥ mahāvrataḥ
rāmaḥ tadā brāhmaṃ paramāstraṃ prāduścakre
15. Rāma, who was then comforted but still filled with anger and indignation, and known for his great vows, then manifested the supreme Brahmā weapon.
ततस्तत्प्रतिघातार्थं ब्राह्ममेवास्त्रमुत्तमम् ।
मया प्रयुक्तं जज्वाल युगान्तमिव दर्शयत् ॥१६॥
16. tatastatpratighātārthaṁ brāhmamevāstramuttamam ,
mayā prayuktaṁ jajvāla yugāntamiva darśayat.
16. tataḥ tatpratighātārthaṃ brāhmam eva astram uttamam
mayā prayuktaṃ jajjvāla yugāntam iva darśayat
16. tataḥ tatpratighātārthaṃ brāhmam eva uttamam astram
mayā prayuktaṃ yugāntam iva darśayat jajjvāla
16. Then, for the purpose of countering that, the supreme Brahmā weapon, which was indeed discharged by me, blazed forth as if displaying the end of an age.
तयोर्ब्रह्मास्त्रयोरासीदन्तरा वै समागमः ।
असंप्राप्यैव रामं च मां च भारतसत्तम ॥१७॥
17. tayorbrahmāstrayorāsīdantarā vai samāgamaḥ ,
asaṁprāpyaiva rāmaṁ ca māṁ ca bhāratasattama.
17. tayoḥ brahmāstrayoḥ āsīt antarā vai samāgamaḥ
asaṃprāpya eva rāmaṃ ca māṃ ca bhāratasattama
17. bhāratasattama,
tayoḥ brahmāstrayoḥ antarā samāgamaḥ vai āsīt,
rāmaṃ ca māṃ ca asaṃprāpya eva
17. O best among the Bhāratas, there was indeed a confluence between those two Brahmā weapons, without even reaching Rāma and me.
ततो व्योम्नि प्रादुरभूत्तेज एव हि केवलम् ।
भूतानि चैव सर्वाणि जग्मुरार्तिं विशां पते ॥१८॥
18. tato vyomni prādurabhūtteja eva hi kevalam ,
bhūtāni caiva sarvāṇi jagmurārtiṁ viśāṁ pate.
18. tataḥ vyomni prādurabhūt tejaḥ eva hi kevalam
bhūtāni ca eva sarvāṇi jagmuḥ ārtim viśāṃ pate
18. tataḥ viśāṃ pate vyomni kevalam tejaḥ eva hi
prādurabhūt ca sarvāṇi bhūtāni ārtim eva jagmuḥ
18. Then, O lord of the people, only sheer radiance appeared in the sky, and all beings experienced extreme distress.
ऋषयश्च सगन्धर्वा देवताश्चैव भारत ।
संतापं परमं जग्मुरस्त्रतेजोभिपीडिताः ॥१९॥
19. ṛṣayaśca sagandharvā devatāścaiva bhārata ,
saṁtāpaṁ paramaṁ jagmurastratejobhipīḍitāḥ.
19. ṛṣayaḥ ca sagandharvāḥ devatāḥ ca eva bhārata
saṃtāpam paramam jagmuḥ astratejobhipīḍitāḥ
19. bhārata ṛṣayaḥ ca sagandharvāḥ ca eva devatāḥ
astratejobhipīḍitāḥ paramam saṃtāpam jagmuḥ
19. O Bhārata, the sages, along with the Gandharvas and the gods, all experienced supreme anguish, being afflicted by the radiance of the missile.
ततश्चचाल पृथिवी सपर्वतवनद्रुमा ।
संतप्तानि च भूतानि विषादं जग्मुरुत्तमम् ॥२०॥
20. tataścacāla pṛthivī saparvatavanadrumā ,
saṁtaptāni ca bhūtāni viṣādaṁ jagmuruttamam.
20. tataḥ cacāla pṛthivī saparvatavanadrumā
saṃtaptāni ca bhūtāni viṣādam jagmuḥ uttamam
20. tataḥ saparvatavanadrumā pṛthivī cacāla ca
saṃtaptāni bhūtāni uttamam viṣādam jagmuḥ
20. Then the earth, along with its mountains, forests, and trees, trembled. And all creatures, being scorched, experienced the utmost despair.
प्रजज्वाल नभो राजन्धूमायन्ते दिशो दश ।
न स्थातुमन्तरिक्षे च शेकुराकाशगास्तदा ॥२१॥
21. prajajvāla nabho rājandhūmāyante diśo daśa ,
na sthātumantarikṣe ca śekurākāśagāstadā.
21. prajajvāla nabhaḥ rājan dhūmāyante diśaḥ daśa
na sthātum antarikṣe ca śekuḥ ākāśagāḥ tadā
21. rājan nabhaḥ prajajvāla ca daśa diśaḥ dhūmāyante
tadā ca ākāśagāḥ antarikṣe sthātum na śekuḥ
21. O King, the sky blazed brightly, and the ten directions became smoky. Then, those who traverse the sky could not remain in the atmosphere.
ततो हाहाकृते लोके सदेवासुरराक्षसे ।
इदमन्तरमित्येव योक्तुकामोऽस्मि भारत ॥२२॥
22. tato hāhākṛte loke sadevāsurarākṣase ,
idamantaramityeva yoktukāmo'smi bhārata.
22. tataḥ hāhākṛte loke sadevasurarākṣase idam
antaram iti eva yoktukāmaḥ asmi bhārata
22. bhārata tataḥ sadevasurarākṣase loke hāhākṛte
idam antaram iti eva asmi yoktukāmaḥ
22. Then, when the world, including gods, asuras, and rakshasas, was crying out in distress, I thought, "This is the decisive moment!" and desired to employ (this weapon), O descendant of Bharata.
प्रस्वापमस्त्रं दयितं वचनाद्ब्रह्मवादिनाम् ।
चिन्तितं च तदस्त्रं मे मनसि प्रत्यभात्तदा ॥२३॥
23. prasvāpamastraṁ dayitaṁ vacanādbrahmavādinām ,
cintitaṁ ca tadastraṁ me manasi pratyabhāttadā.
23. prasvāpam astram dayitam vacanāt brahmavādinām
cintitam ca tat astram me manasi prati abhāt tadā
23. tadā brahmavādinām vacanāt me dayitam prasvāpam
astram ca tat astram manasi cintitam prati abhāt
23. That sleep-inducing weapon (prasvāpa), dear to me, (which was received) by the command of the Brahma-knowing sages (brahmavādinām) - and then, when that weapon was thought of by me, it appeared in my mind.
