युधिष्ठिर उवाच ।
ब्रूहि ब्राह्मणपूजायां व्युष्टिं त्वं मधुसूदन ।
वेत्ता त्वमस्य चार्थस्य वेद त्वां हि पितामहः ॥१॥
1. yudhiṣṭhira uvāca ,
brūhi brāhmaṇapūjāyāṁ vyuṣṭiṁ tvaṁ madhusūdana ,
vettā tvamasya cārthasya veda tvāṁ hi pitāmahaḥ.

1. Yudhiṣṭhira said: "O Madhusūdana, please explain to me the beneficial results (vyuṣṭi) of venerating brāhmaṇas. You are indeed the knower of this subject, and even Grandfather Brahmā knows you."
वासुदेव उवाच ।
शृणुष्वावहितो राजन्द्विजानां भरतर्षभ ।
यथातत्त्वेन वदतो गुणान्मे कुरुसत्तम ॥२॥
2. vāsudeva uvāca ,
śṛṇuṣvāvahito rājandvijānāṁ bharatarṣabha ,
yathātattvena vadato guṇānme kurusattama.
2. vāsudevaḥ uvāca śṛṇuṣva avahitaḥ rājan dvijānām
bharatarṣabha yathātattvena vadataḥ guṇān me kurusattama

2. Vāsudeva said: "Listen attentively, O king, O best among the Bhāratas (bharatarṣabha)! I shall now speak of the true qualities of the twice-born (dvijas) as they are (yathātattvena), O best of the Kurus (kurusattama)."
प्रद्युम्नः परिपप्रच्छ ब्राह्मणैः परिकोपितः ।
किं फलं ब्राह्मणेष्वस्ति पूजायां मधुसूदन ।
ईश्वरस्य सतस्तस्य इह चैव परत्र च ॥३॥
3. pradyumnaḥ paripapraccha brāhmaṇaiḥ parikopitaḥ ,
kiṁ phalaṁ brāhmaṇeṣvasti pūjāyāṁ madhusūdana ,
īśvarasya satastasya iha caiva paratra ca.
3. pradyumnaḥ paripapraccha brāhmaṇaiḥ
parikopitaḥ kim phalam brāhmaṇeṣu
asti pūjāyām madhusūdana īśvarasya
satas tasya iha ca eva paratra ca
3. madhusūdana pradyumna brāhmaṇaiḥ

3. Pradyumna, greatly provoked by the Brahmins, repeatedly asked: 'O Madhusūdana, what is the benefit in the worship of Brahmins? What about the existing Lord, both in this world and the next?'
सदा द्विजातीन्संपूज्य किं फलं तत्र मानद ।
एतद्ब्रूहि पितः सर्वं सुमहान्संशयोऽत्र मे ॥४॥
4. sadā dvijātīnsaṁpūjya kiṁ phalaṁ tatra mānada ,
etadbrūhi pitaḥ sarvaṁ sumahānsaṁśayo'tra me.
4. sadā dvijātīn sampūjya kim phalam tatra mānada
etat brūhi pitaḥ sarvam sumahān saṃśayaḥ atra me
4. mānada pitaḥ dvijātīn sadā sampūjya kim phalam
tatra etat sarvam brūhi me atra sumahān saṃśayaḥ
4. O Giver of Honor, what is the benefit in always worshipping the twice-born? O father, tell me all this, for I have a very great doubt (saṃśaya) about it.
इत्युक्तवचनस्तेन प्रद्युम्नेन तदा त्वहम् ।
प्रत्यब्रुवं महाराज यत्तच्छृणु समाहितः ॥५॥
5. ityuktavacanastena pradyumnena tadā tvaham ,
pratyabruvaṁ mahārāja yattacchṛṇu samāhitaḥ.
5. iti ukta-vacanaḥ tena pradyumnena tadā tu aham
prati-abruvam mahārāja yat tat śṛṇu samāhitaḥ
5. mahārāja pradyumnena tena ukta-vacanaḥ iti tadā
tu aham prati-abruvam yat tat samāhitaḥ śṛṇu
5. When Pradyumna spoke these words, then, O great king, I replied: 'Listen attentively to that which I say.'
व्युष्टिं ब्राह्मणपूजायां रौक्मिणेय निबोध मे ।
एते हि सोमराजान ईश्वराः सुखदुःखयोः ॥६॥
6. vyuṣṭiṁ brāhmaṇapūjāyāṁ raukmiṇeya nibodha me ,
ete hi somarājāna īśvarāḥ sukhaduḥkhayoḥ.
6. vyuṣṭim brāhmaṇa-pūjāyām raukmiṇeya nibodha me
ete hi soma-rājānaḥ īśvarāḥ sukha-duḥkhayoḥ
6. raukmiṇeya me brāhmaṇa-pūjāyām vyuṣṭim nibodha
hi ete soma-rājānaḥ īśvarāḥ sukha-duḥkhayoḥ
6. O son of Rukmini (Raukmiṇeya), understand from me the reward (vyuṣṭi) in the worship of Brahmins. Indeed, these (Brahmins) are like kings of Soma, masters of joy and sorrow.
अस्मिँल्लोके रौक्मिणेय तथामुष्मिंश्च पुत्रक ।
ब्राह्मणप्रमुखं सौख्यं न मेऽत्रास्ति विचारणा ॥७॥
7. asmiँlloke raukmiṇeya tathāmuṣmiṁśca putraka ,
brāhmaṇapramukhaṁ saukhyaṁ na me'trāsti vicāraṇā.
7. asmin loke raukmiṇeya tathā amuṣmin ca putraka
brāhmaṇapramukham saukhyam na me atra asti vicāraṇā
7. raukmiṇeya putraka asmin loke tathā amuṣmin ca
brāhmaṇapramukham saukhyam me atra vicāraṇā na asti
7. O son of Rukmiṇī, and O son, in this world and likewise in the other, happiness (welfare) has brahmins as its foremost source. I have no doubt concerning this.
ब्राह्मणप्रमुखं वीर्यमायुः कीर्तिर्यशो बलम् ।
लोका लोकेश्वराश्चैव सर्वे ब्राह्मणपूर्वकाः ॥८॥
8. brāhmaṇapramukhaṁ vīryamāyuḥ kīrtiryaśo balam ,
lokā lokeśvarāścaiva sarve brāhmaṇapūrvakāḥ.
8. brāhmaṇapramukham vīryam āyuḥ kīrtiḥ yaśaḥ balam
lokāḥ lokeśvarāḥ ca eva sarve brāhmaṇapūrvakāḥ
8. vīryam āyuḥ kīrtiḥ yaśaḥ balam brāhmaṇapramukham (asti)
ca eva sarve lokāḥ lokeśvarāḥ brāhmaṇapūrvakāḥ (santi)
8. Valour, longevity, fame, glory, and strength - all these have brahmins as their principal source. Indeed, all worlds and their lords (lokeśvarāḥ) originate from brahmins.
तत्कथं नाद्रियेयं वै ईश्वरोऽस्मीति पुत्रक ।
मा ते मन्युर्महाबाहो भवत्वत्र द्विजान्प्रति ॥९॥
9. tatkathaṁ nādriyeyaṁ vai īśvaro'smīti putraka ,
mā te manyurmahābāho bhavatvatra dvijānprati.
9. tat katham na ādriyeyam vai īśvaraḥ asmi iti putraka
mā te manyuḥ mahābāho bhavatu atra dvijān prati
9. putraka tat īśvaraḥ asmi iti katham vai na ādriyeyam
mahābāho te manyuḥ atra dvijān prati mā bhavatu
9. Therefore, O son, how can I not respect them, thinking 'I am a lord'? O mighty-armed one, let there be no anger in you towards the brahmins in this matter.
ब्राह्मणो हि महद्भूतमस्मिँल्लोके परत्र च ।
भस्म कुर्युर्जगदिदं क्रुद्धाः प्रत्यक्षदर्शिनः ॥१०॥
10. brāhmaṇo hi mahadbhūtamasmiँlloke paratra ca ,
bhasma kuryurjagadidaṁ kruddhāḥ pratyakṣadarśinaḥ.
10. brāhmaṇaḥ hi mahat bhūtam asmin loke paratra ca
bhasma kuryuḥ jagat idam kruddhāḥ pratyakṣadarśinaḥ
10. brāhmaṇaḥ hi asmin loke paratra ca mahat bhūtam (asti)
kruddhāḥ pratyakṣadarśinaḥ idam jagat bhasma kuryuḥ
10. Indeed, a brahmin is a great being in this world and in the next. Enraged, those with direct perception (pratyakṣadarśinaḥ) would turn this entire world into ashes.
अन्यानपि सृजेयुश्च लोकाँल्लोकेश्वरांस्तथा ।
कथं तेषु न वर्तेय सम्यग्ज्ञानात्सुतेजसः ॥११॥
11. anyānapi sṛjeyuśca lokāँllokeśvarāṁstathā ,
kathaṁ teṣu na varteya samyagjñānātsutejasaḥ.
11. anyān api sṛjeyuḥ ca lokān lokeśvarān tathā
kathaṃ teṣu na varteya samyak jñānāt sutejasaḥ
11. anyān api lokān lokeśvarān ca tathā sṛjeyuḥ
kathaṃ samyak jñānāt sutejasaḥ teṣu na varteya
11. And they would create other worlds and their rulers as well. How then could I, endowed with perfect knowledge and immense radiance, not exist among them?
अवसन्मद्गृहे तात ब्राह्मणो हरिपिङ्गलः ।
चीरवासा बिल्वदण्डी दीर्घश्मश्रुनखादिमान् ।
दीर्घेभ्यश्च मनुष्येभ्यः प्रमाणादधिको भुवि ॥१२॥
12. avasanmadgṛhe tāta brāhmaṇo haripiṅgalaḥ ,
cīravāsā bilvadaṇḍī dīrghaśmaśrunakhādimān ,
dīrghebhyaśca manuṣyebhyaḥ pramāṇādadhiko bhuvi.
12. avasat madgṛhe tāta brāhmaṇaḥ
haripiṅgalaḥ cīravāsāḥ bilvadaṇḍī
dīrghaśmaśrunakhādimān dīrghebhyaḥ ca
manuṣyebhyaḥ pramāṇāt adhikaḥ bhuvi
12. tāta haripiṅgalaḥ cīravāsāḥ bilvadaṇḍī
dīrghaśmaśrunakhādimān brāhmaṇaḥ
madgṛhe avasat ca bhuvi dīrghebhyaḥ
manuṣyebhyaḥ pramāṇāt adhikaḥ
12. My child, a brahmin (brāhmaṇa) of tawny-brown complexion, clad in bark garments, carrying a bilva-wood staff, and possessing long beard and nails, resided in my house. He was taller than even the tallest men on earth.
स स्म संचरते लोकान्ये दिव्या ये च मानुषाः ।
इमा गाथा गायमानश्चत्वरेषु सभासु च ॥१३॥
13. sa sma saṁcarate lokānye divyā ye ca mānuṣāḥ ,
imā gāthā gāyamānaścatvareṣu sabhāsu ca.
13. saḥ sma saṃcarate lokān ye divyāḥ ye ca mānuṣāḥ
imāḥ gāthāḥ gāyamānaḥ catvareṣu sabhāsu ca
13. saḥ sma ye divyāḥ ye ca mānuṣāḥ lokān saṃcarate
imāḥ gāthāḥ catvareṣu sabhāsu ca gāyamānaḥ
13. He (that brahmin) would wander through worlds, both divine and human, singing these verses in public squares and assemblies.
दुर्वाससं वासयेत्को ब्राह्मणं सत्कृतं गृहे ।
परिभाषां च मे श्रुत्वा को नु दद्यात्प्रतिश्रयम् ।
यो मां कश्चिद्वासयेत न स मां कोपयेदिह ॥१४॥
14. durvāsasaṁ vāsayetko brāhmaṇaṁ satkṛtaṁ gṛhe ,
paribhāṣāṁ ca me śrutvā ko nu dadyātpratiśrayam ,
yo māṁ kaścidvāsayeta na sa māṁ kopayediha.
14. durvāsasam vāsayet kaḥ brāhmaṇaṃ
satkṛtaṃ gṛhe paribhāṣām ca me śrutvā
kaḥ nu dadyāt pratiśrayam yaḥ mām
kaścit vāsayeta na saḥ mām kopayet iha
14. kaḥ satkṛtaṃ brāhmaṇaṃ durvāsasam
gṛhe vāsayet ca me paribhāṣām śrutvā
kaḥ nu pratiśrayam dadyāt yaḥ kaścit
māṃ iha vāsayeta saḥ māṃ na kopayet
14. Who would host the respected brahmin (brāhmaṇa) Durvasas in their home? And who, after hearing my pronouncements, would indeed offer him shelter? Whoever hosts me here, that person would not incur my wrath.
तं स्म नाद्रियते
कश्चित्ततोऽहं तमवासयम् ॥१५॥
15. taṁ sma nādriyate
kaścittato'haṁ tamavāsayam.
15. tam sma na ādriyate kaścit
tataḥ aham tam avāsayām
15. kaścit tam na sma ādriyate
tataḥ aham tam avāsayām
15. No one showed him any respect, therefore I gave him a dwelling.
स स्म भुङ्क्ते सहस्राणां बहूनामन्नमेकदा ।
एकदा स्माल्पकं भुङ्क्ते न वैति च पुनर्गृहान् ॥१६॥
16. sa sma bhuṅkte sahasrāṇāṁ bahūnāmannamekadā ,
ekadā smālpakaṁ bhuṅkte na vaiti ca punargṛhān.
16. sa sma bhuṅkte sahasrāṇām bahūnām annam ekadā
ekadā sma alpakam bhuṅkte na vaiti ca punaḥ gṛhān
16. ekadā sa sma bahūnām sahasrāṇām annam bhuṅkte
ekadā sma alpakam bhuṅkte ca punaḥ gṛhān na vaiti
16. At one time he would eat the food of many thousands, and at another time he would eat very little and not return home again.
अकस्माच्च प्रहसति तथाकस्मात्प्ररोदिति ।
न चास्य वयसा तुल्यः पृथिव्यामभवत्तदा ॥१७॥
17. akasmācca prahasati tathākasmātpraroditi ,
na cāsya vayasā tulyaḥ pṛthivyāmabhavattadā.
17. akasmāt ca prahasati tathā akasmāt praroditi na
ca asya vayasā tulyaḥ pṛthivyām abhavat tadā
17. akasmāt ca prahasati tathā akasmāt praroditi ca
tadā asya vayasā tulyaḥ pṛthivyām na abhavat
17. He would suddenly laugh, and likewise, he would suddenly cry. And at that time, there was no one on earth comparable to him in age.
सोऽस्मदावसथं गत्वा शय्याश्चास्तरणानि च ।
कन्याश्चालंकृता दग्ध्वा ततो व्यपगतः स्वयम् ॥१८॥
18. so'smadāvasathaṁ gatvā śayyāścāstaraṇāni ca ,
kanyāścālaṁkṛtā dagdhvā tato vyapagataḥ svayam.
18. saḥ asmat āvasatham gatvā śayyāḥ ca āstaraṇāni ca
kanyāḥ ca alaṃkṛtāḥ dagdhvā tataḥ vyapagataḥ svayam
18. saḥ asmat āvasatham gatvā śayyāḥ ca āstaraṇāni ca
alaṃkṛtāḥ kanyāḥ ca dagdhvā tataḥ svayam vyapagataḥ
18. Having gone to our dwelling, he burned (dagdhvā) the beds and coverings, as well as the adorned maidens, and then he himself departed from there.
अथ मामब्रवीद्भूयः स मुनिः संशितव्रतः ।
कृष्ण पायसमिच्छामि भोक्तुमित्येव सत्वरः ॥१९॥
19. atha māmabravīdbhūyaḥ sa muniḥ saṁśitavrataḥ ,
kṛṣṇa pāyasamicchāmi bhoktumityeva satvaraḥ.
19. atha mām abravīt bhūyaḥ saḥ muniḥ saṃśitavrataḥ
kṛṣṇa pāyasam icchāmi bhoktum iti eva satvaraḥ
19. Then that ascetic (muni) of firm vows spoke to me again, "Krishna, I quickly wish to eat rice pudding."
सदैव तु मया तस्य चित्तज्ञेन गृहे जनः ।
सर्वाण्येवान्नपानानि भक्ष्याश्चोच्चावचास्तथा ।
भवन्तु सत्कृतानीति पूर्वमेव प्रचोदितः ॥२०॥
20. sadaiva tu mayā tasya cittajñena gṛhe janaḥ ,
sarvāṇyevānnapānāni bhakṣyāścoccāvacāstathā ,
bhavantu satkṛtānīti pūrvameva pracoditaḥ.
20. sadā eva tu mayā tasya cittajñena
gṛhe janaḥ sarvāṇi eva annapānāni
bhakṣyāḥ ca uccāvacāḥ tathā bhavantu
satkṛtāni iti pūrvam eva pracoditaḥ
20. However, I, being one who understood his intentions, had always had the household staff in my home instructed beforehand with the directive: 'Let all food, drinks, and various delicacies be respectfully prepared!'
ततोऽहं ज्वलमानं वै पायसं प्रत्यवेदयम् ।
तद्भुक्त्वैव तु स क्षिप्रं ततो वचनमब्रवीत् ।
क्षिप्रमङ्गानि लिम्पस्व पायसेनेति स स्म ह ॥२१॥
21. tato'haṁ jvalamānaṁ vai pāyasaṁ pratyavedayam ,
tadbhuktvaiva tu sa kṣipraṁ tato vacanamabravīt ,
kṣipramaṅgāni limpasva pāyaseneti sa sma ha.
21. tataḥ aham jvalamānam vai pāyasam
pratyavedayam tat bhuktvā eva tu saḥ
kṣipram tataḥ vacanam abravīt kṣipram
aṅgāni limpasva pāyasena iti saḥ sma ha
21. Then I offered him the still-hot rice pudding. Having eaten it immediately, he quickly spoke these words: "Quickly smear your limbs with the rice pudding!"
अविमृश्यैव च ततः कृतवानस्मि तत्तथा ।
तेनोच्छिष्टेन गात्राणि शिरश्चैवाभ्यमृक्षयम् ॥२२॥
22. avimṛśyaiva ca tataḥ kṛtavānasmi tattathā ,
tenocchiṣṭena gātrāṇi śiraścaivābhyamṛkṣayam.
22. avimṛśya eva ca tataḥ kṛtavān asmi tat tathā tena
ucchiṣṭena gātrāṇi śiraḥ ca eva abhyamṛkṣayam
22. Without reflecting, I then did exactly that. With that leftover (rice pudding), I smeared my limbs and also my head.
स ददर्श तदाभ्याशे मातरं ते शुभाननाम् ।
तामपि स्मयमानः स पायसेनाभ्यलेपयत् ॥२३॥
23. sa dadarśa tadābhyāśe mātaraṁ te śubhānanām ,
tāmapi smayamānaḥ sa pāyasenābhyalepayat.
23. sa dadarśa tadā abhyāśe mātaram te śubhānanām
tām api smayamānaḥ sa pāyasena abhyalepayat
23. saḥ tadā abhyāśe te śubhānanām mātaram dadarśa
saḥ api smayamānaḥ tām pāyasena abhyalepayat
23. Then, the (muni) saw your auspicious-faced mother nearby. Smiling, he also smeared her with milk-rice.
मुनिः पायसदिग्धाङ्गीं रथे तूर्णमयोजयत् ।
तमारुह्य रथं चैव निर्ययौ स गृहान्मम ॥२४॥
24. muniḥ pāyasadigdhāṅgīṁ rathe tūrṇamayojayat ,
tamāruhya rathaṁ caiva niryayau sa gṛhānmama.
24. muniḥ pāyasadigdhāṅgīm rathe tūrṇam ayojayat
tam āruhya ratham ca eva niryayau sa gṛhān mama
24. muniḥ pāyasadigdhāṅgīm tūrṇam rathe ayojayat
saḥ tam ratham āruhya ca eva mama gṛhān niryayau
24. The (muni) quickly placed her, whose body was smeared with milk-rice, in the chariot. Having mounted that chariot, he departed from my house.
अग्निवर्णो ज्वलन्धीमान्स द्विजो रथधुर्यवत् ।
प्रतोदेनातुदद्बालां रुक्मिणीं मम पश्यतः ॥२५॥
25. agnivarṇo jvalandhīmānsa dvijo rathadhuryavat ,
pratodenātudadbālāṁ rukmiṇīṁ mama paśyataḥ.
25. agnivarṇaḥ jvalan dhīmān sa dvijaḥ rathadhuryavat
pratodena atudat bālām rukmiṇīm mama paśyataḥ
25. saḥ agnivarnaḥ jvalan dhīmān dvijaḥ rathadhuryavat
pratodena mama paśyataḥ bālām rukmiṇīm atudat
25. That (dvija), fiery-hued, radiant, and intelligent, acted like a charioteer. With a goad, he drove the young woman Rukmini, while I watched.
न च मे स्तोकमप्यासीद्दुःखमीर्ष्याकृतं तदा ।
ततः स राजमार्गेण महता निर्ययौ बहिः ॥२६॥
26. na ca me stokamapyāsīdduḥkhamīrṣyākṛtaṁ tadā ,
tataḥ sa rājamārgeṇa mahatā niryayau bahiḥ.
26. na ca me stokam api āsīt duḥkham īrṣyākṛtam
tadā tataḥ sa rājamārgeṇa mahatā niryayau bahiḥ
26. ca na tadā me stokam api īrṣyākṛtam duḥkham āsīt
tataḥ saḥ mahatā rājamārgeṇa bahiḥ niryayau
26. And at that time, not even a little sorrow caused by jealousy was present in me. Thereafter, he departed outside by the great highway.
तद्दृष्ट्वा महदाश्चर्यं दाशार्हा जातमन्यवः ।
तत्राजल्पन्मिथः केचित्समाभाष्य परस्परम् ॥२७॥
27. taddṛṣṭvā mahadāścaryaṁ dāśārhā jātamanyavaḥ ,
tatrājalpanmithaḥ kecitsamābhāṣya parasparam.
27. tat dṛṣṭvā mahat āścaryam dāśārhāḥ jātamanyavaḥ
tatra ājalpan mithaḥ kecit samābhāṣya parasparam
27. dāśārhāḥ tat mahat āścaryam dṛṣṭvā jātamanyavaḥ
tatra kecit parasparam samābhāṣya mithaḥ ājalpan
27. Upon seeing that great wonder, the Dāśārhas became enraged. Some of them, having conferred with each other, spoke amongst themselves there.
ब्राह्मणा एव जायेरन्नान्यो वर्णः कथंचन ।
को ह्येनं रथमास्थाय जीवेदन्यः पुमानिह ॥२८॥
28. brāhmaṇā eva jāyerannānyo varṇaḥ kathaṁcana ,
ko hyenaṁ rathamāsthāya jīvedanyaḥ pumāniha.
28. brāhmaṇāḥ eva jāyeran na anyaḥ varṇaḥ kathaṃcana
kaḥ hi enam ratham āsthāya jīvet anyaḥ pumān iha
28. eva brāhmaṇāḥ jāyeran kathaṃcana anyaḥ varṇaḥ na
hi kaḥ anyaḥ pumān enam ratham āsthāya iha jīvet
28. “Only Brahmins should be born, and no other social class (varṇa) whatsoever! For who else, having mounted this chariot, could survive here as a man?
आशीविषविषं तीक्ष्णं ततस्तीक्ष्णतरं विषम् ।
ब्रह्माशीविषदग्धस्य नास्ति कश्चिच्चिकित्सकः ॥२९॥
29. āśīviṣaviṣaṁ tīkṣṇaṁ tatastīkṣṇataraṁ viṣam ,
brahmāśīviṣadagdhasya nāsti kaściccikitsakaḥ.
29. āśīviṣa-viṣam tīkṣṇam tataḥ tīkṣṇataram viṣam
brahma-āśīviṣa-dagdhasya na asti kaścit cikitsakaḥ
29. āśīviṣaviṣam tīkṣṇam tataḥ tīkṣṇataram viṣam
brahma-āśīviṣadagdhasya kaścit cikitsakaḥ na asti
29. The poison of a venomous snake is potent, but more potent than that is [this other] poison. For one who is burned by the venom of a Brahmin (brahman), there is no physician whatsoever.
तस्मिन्व्रजति दुर्धर्षे प्रास्खलद्रुक्मिणी पथि ।
तां नामर्षयत श्रीमांस्ततस्तूर्णमचोदयत् ॥३०॥
30. tasminvrajati durdharṣe prāskhaladrukmiṇī pathi ,
tāṁ nāmarṣayata śrīmāṁstatastūrṇamacodayat.
30. tasmin vrajati durdharṣe prāskhalat rukmiṇī pathi
tām na amarṣayat śrīmān tataḥ tūrṇam acodayat
30. durdharṣe tasmin vrajati rukmiṇī pathi prāskhalat
śrīmān tām na amarṣayat tataḥ tūrṇam acodayat
30. As that formidable one was proceeding, Rukmiṇī stumbled on the path. The glorious one did not tolerate this, and then swiftly urged [her/it] on.
ततः परमसंक्रुद्धो रथात्प्रस्कन्द्य स द्विजः ।
पदातिरुत्पथेनैव प्राधावद्दक्षिणामुखः ॥३१॥
31. tataḥ paramasaṁkruddho rathātpraskandya sa dvijaḥ ,
padātirutpathenaiva prādhāvaddakṣiṇāmukhaḥ.
31. tataḥ parama-saṃkruddhaḥ rathāt praskandya saḥ
dvijaḥ padātiḥ utpathena eva prādhāvat dakṣiṇāmukhaḥ
31. tataḥ parama-saṃkruddhaḥ saḥ dvijaḥ rathāt praskandya
padātiḥ utpathena eva dakṣiṇāmukhaḥ prādhāvat
31. Then, extremely enraged, that Brahmin (dvija) jumped down from his chariot. On foot, he ran, facing south, by an unusual path.
तमुत्पथेन धावन्तमन्वधावं द्विजोत्तमम् ।
तथैव पायसादिग्धः प्रसीद भगवन्निति ॥३२॥
32. tamutpathena dhāvantamanvadhāvaṁ dvijottamam ,
tathaiva pāyasādigdhaḥ prasīda bhagavanniti.
32. tam utpathena dhāvantam anvadhāvam dvija-uttamam
tathā eva pāyasa-digdhaḥ prasīda bhagavan iti
32. utpathena dhāvantam tam dvija-uttamam anvadhāvam
tathā eva pāyasa-digdhaḥ [aham] "bhagavan prasīda" iti
32. I ran after that excellent Brahmin (dvijottama), who was running by the unusual path. I myself, still smeared with rice pudding, pleaded, "Be gracious, O revered one!"
ततो विलोक्य तेजस्वी ब्राह्मणो मामुवाच ह ।
जितः क्रोधस्त्वया कृष्ण प्रकृत्यैव महाभुज ॥३३॥
33. tato vilokya tejasvī brāhmaṇo māmuvāca ha ,
jitaḥ krodhastvayā kṛṣṇa prakṛtyaiva mahābhuja.
33. tataḥ vilokya tejasvī brāhmaṇaḥ mām uvāca ha
jitaḥ krodhaḥ tvayā kṛṣṇa prakṛtyā eva mahā-bhuja
33. tataḥ vilokya tejasvī brāhmaṇaḥ mām ha uvāca "kṛṣṇa mahā-bhuja,
tvayā krodhaḥ prakṛtyā eva jitaḥ"
33. Then, having seen me, that radiant Brahmin indeed said to me: "O Kṛṣṇa, O mighty-armed one, your anger has been conquered by your very nature (prakṛti)."
न तेऽपराधमिह वै दृष्टवानस्मि सुव्रत ।
प्रीतोऽस्मि तव गोविन्द वृणु कामान्यथेप्सितान् ।
प्रसन्नस्य च मे तात पश्य व्युष्टिर्यथाविधा ॥३४॥
34. na te'parādhamiha vai dṛṣṭavānasmi suvrata ,
prīto'smi tava govinda vṛṇu kāmānyathepsitān ,
prasannasya ca me tāta paśya vyuṣṭiryathāvidhā.
34. na te aparādham iha vai dṛṣṭavān asmi
suvrata prītaḥ asmi tava govinda
vṛṇu kāmān yathā-īpsitān prasannasya
ca me tāta paśya vyuṣṭiḥ yathā-vidhā
34. suvrata,
iha te aparādham vai na dṛṣṭavān asmi.
govinda,
tava prītaḥ asmi.
yathā-īpsitān kāmān vṛṇu.
ca tāta,
me prasannasya yathā-vidhā vyuṣṭiḥ paśya.
34. "O virtuous one (suvrata), I have indeed seen no fault of yours here. O Govinda, I am pleased with you; choose the desires as you wish. And, my dear one (tāta), behold the consequence (vyuṣṭi) of my being pleased, of what kind it is."
यावदेव मनुष्याणामन्ने भावो भविष्यति ।
यथैवान्ने तथा तेषां त्वयि भावो भविष्यति ॥३५॥
35. yāvadeva manuṣyāṇāmanne bhāvo bhaviṣyati ,
yathaivānne tathā teṣāṁ tvayi bhāvo bhaviṣyati.
35. yāvat eva manuṣyāṇām anne bhāvaḥ bhaviṣyati yathā
eva anne tathā teṣām tvayi bhāvaḥ bhaviṣyati
35. yāvat eva manuṣyāṇām anne bhāvaḥ bhaviṣyati yathā
eva anne tathā teṣām tvayi bhāvaḥ bhaviṣyati
35. For as long as human beings have a strong inclination (bhāva) towards food, in that very same way will their inclination (bhāva) be towards you.
यावच्च पुण्या लोकेषु त्वयि कीर्तिर्भविष्यति ।
त्रिषु लोकेषु तावच्च वैशिष्ट्यं प्रतिपत्स्यसे ।
सुप्रियः सर्वलोकस्य भविष्यसि जनार्दन ॥३६॥
36. yāvacca puṇyā lokeṣu tvayi kīrtirbhaviṣyati ,
triṣu lokeṣu tāvacca vaiśiṣṭyaṁ pratipatsyase ,
supriyaḥ sarvalokasya bhaviṣyasi janārdana.
36. yāvat ca puṇyā lokeṣu tvayi kīrtiḥ
bhaviṣyati triṣu lokeṣu tāvat ca
vaiśiṣṭyam pratipatsyase supriyaḥ
sarvalokasya bhaviṣyasi janārdana
36. yāvat ca puṇyā kīrtiḥ tvayi lokeṣu
bhaviṣyati tāvat ca triṣu lokeṣu
vaiśiṣṭyam pratipatsyase sarvalokasya
supriyaḥ bhaviṣyasi janārdana
36. And as long as there is meritorious fame for you in the worlds, for that same period you will achieve pre-eminence in the three worlds. O Janardana, you will become very dear to all people.
यत्ते भिन्नं च दग्धं च यच्च किंचिद्विनाशितम् ।
सर्वं तथैव द्रष्टासि विशिष्टं वा जनार्दन ॥३७॥
37. yatte bhinnaṁ ca dagdhaṁ ca yacca kiṁcidvināśitam ,
sarvaṁ tathaiva draṣṭāsi viśiṣṭaṁ vā janārdana.
37. yat te bhinnam ca dagdham ca yat ca kiñcit vināśitam
sarvam tathā eva draṣṭā asi viśiṣṭam vā janārdana
37. yat te bhinnam ca dagdham ca yat ca kiñcit vināśitam
sarvam janārdana tathā eva vā viśiṣṭam draṣṭā asi
37. Whatever has been broken by you, and burnt, and whatever has been destroyed, all of that, O Janardana, you will see again just as it was, or even more excellent.
यावदेतत्प्रलिप्तं ते गात्रेषु मधुसूदन ।
अतो मृत्युभयं नास्ति यावदिच्छा तवाच्युत ॥३८॥
38. yāvadetatpraliptaṁ te gātreṣu madhusūdana ,
ato mṛtyubhayaṁ nāsti yāvadicchā tavācyuta.
38. yāvat etat praliptam te gātreṣu madhusūdana ataḥ
mṛtyubhayam na asti yāvat icchā tava acyuta
38. madhusūdana yāvat etat te gātreṣu praliptam ataḥ
mṛtyubhayam na asti acyuta yāvat tava icchā
38. O Madhusudana, as long as this (substance) is smeared upon your limbs, because of this there will be no fear of death for you, for as long as it is your wish, O Acyuta.
न तु पादतले लिप्ते कस्मात्ते पुत्रकाद्य वै ।
नैतन्मे प्रियमित्येव स मां प्रीतोऽब्रवीत्तदा ।
इत्युक्तोऽहं शरीरं स्वमपश्यं श्रीसमायुतम् ॥३९॥
39. na tu pādatale lipte kasmātte putrakādya vai ,
naitanme priyamityeva sa māṁ prīto'bravīttadā ,
ityukto'haṁ śarīraṁ svamapaśyaṁ śrīsamāyutam.
39. na tu pādatale lipte kasmāt te putrakāt
adya vai | na etat me priyam iti eva
sa mām prītaḥ abravīt tadā | iti uktaḥ
aham śarīram svam apaśyam śrī-samāyutam
39. putrakāt pādatale lipte te adya vai kasmāt
na tu saḥ prītaḥ (san) etat me priyam
na iti eva tadā mām abravīt iti uktaḥ
aham svam śrī-samāyutam śarīram apaśyam
39. “Why then, my son, should it not be smeared on your feet today?” With these words, “This is not dear to me,” he, being pleased, spoke to me then. Thus addressed, I saw my own body endowed with splendor.
रुक्मिणीं चाब्रवीत्प्रीतः सर्वस्त्रीणां वरं यशः ।
कीर्तिं चानुत्तमां लोके समवाप्स्यसि शोभने ॥४०॥
40. rukmiṇīṁ cābravītprītaḥ sarvastrīṇāṁ varaṁ yaśaḥ ,
kīrtiṁ cānuttamāṁ loke samavāpsyasi śobhane.
40. rukmiṇīm ca abravīt prītaḥ sarva-strīṇām varam yaśaḥ
| kīrtim ca anuttamām loke samavāpsyasi śobhane
40. prītaḥ saḥ ca rukmiṇīm abravīt: "śobhane,
tvam loke sarva-strīṇām varam yaśaḥ ca anuttamām kīrtim samavāpsyasi.
"
40. Pleased, he also spoke to Rukmini, saying, "O beautiful one, you will attain excellent fame and unparalleled renown among all women in the world."
न त्वां जरा वा रोगो वा वैवर्ण्यं चापि भामिनि ।
स्प्रक्ष्यन्ति पुण्यगन्धा च कृष्णमाराधयिष्यसि ॥४१॥
41. na tvāṁ jarā vā rogo vā vaivarṇyaṁ cāpi bhāmini ,
sprakṣyanti puṇyagandhā ca kṛṣṇamārādhayiṣyasi.
41. na tvām jarā vā rogaḥ vā vaivarṇyam ca api bhāmini
| sprakṣyanti puṇya-gandhā ca kṛṣṇam ārādhayiṣyasi
41. bhāmini,
jarā vā rogaḥ vā vaivarṇyam ca api tvām na sprakṣyanti ca (tvam) puṇya-gandhā (bhūtvā) kṛṣṇam ārādhayiṣyasi
41. "Neither old age, nor disease, nor discoloration, O radiant lady, will touch you. And you will worship Krishna, having a pure fragrance."
षोडशानां सहस्राणां वधूनां केशवस्य ह ।
वरिष्ठा सहलोक्या च केशवस्य भविष्यसि ॥४२॥
42. ṣoḍaśānāṁ sahasrāṇāṁ vadhūnāṁ keśavasya ha ,
variṣṭhā sahalokyā ca keśavasya bhaviṣyasi.
42. ṣoḍaśānām sahasrāṇām vadhūnām keśavasya ha |
variṣṭhā saha-lokyā ca keśavasya bhaviṣyasi
42. (tvam) keśavasya ṣoḍaśānām sahasrāṇām vadhūnām variṣṭhā
bhaviṣyasi ha ca keśavasya saha-lokyā (api) bhaviṣyasi
42. “You will be the foremost among the sixteen thousand wives of Keśava, and you will share his world.”
तव मातरमित्युक्त्वा ततो मां पुनरब्रवीत् ।
प्रस्थितः सुमहातेजा दुर्वासा वह्निवज्ज्वलन् ॥४३॥
43. tava mātaramityuktvā tato māṁ punarabravīt ,
prasthitaḥ sumahātejā durvāsā vahnivajjvalan.
43. tava mātaram iti uktvā tataḥ mām punar abravīt
prasthitaḥ sumahātejāḥ durvāsāḥ vahnivat jvalan
43. Having said, 'Your mother,' Durvasa, immensely radiant and blazing like fire, then spoke to me again before he departed.
एषैव ते बुद्धिरस्तु ब्राह्मणान्प्रति केशव ।
इत्युक्त्वा स तदा पुत्र तत्रैवान्तरधीयत ॥४४॥
44. eṣaiva te buddhirastu brāhmaṇānprati keśava ,
ityuktvā sa tadā putra tatraivāntaradhīyata.
44. eṣā eva te buddhiḥ astu brāhmaṇān prati keśava
iti uktvā saḥ tadā putra tatra eva antaradhīyata
44. O Keśava, let this indeed be your resolve regarding the brahmins (brāhmaṇa)! Having spoken thus, O son, he then disappeared right there.
तस्मिन्नन्तर्हिते चाहमुपांशुव्रतमादिशम् ।
यत्किंचिद्ब्राह्मणो ब्रूयात्सर्वं कुर्यामिति प्रभो ॥४५॥
45. tasminnantarhite cāhamupāṁśuvratamādiśam ,
yatkiṁcidbrāhmaṇo brūyātsarvaṁ kuryāmiti prabho.
45. tasmin antarhite ca aham upāṃśuvratam ādiśam yat
kiṃcit brāhmaṇaḥ brūyāt sarvam kuryām iti prabho
45. And when he (Durvasa) had disappeared, O Lord, I then undertook a silent vow: 'Whatever a brahmin (brāhmaṇa) may say, I shall do all of it.'
एतद्व्रतमहं कृत्वा मात्रा ते सह पुत्रक ।
ततः परमहृष्टात्मा प्राविशं गृहमेव च ॥४६॥
46. etadvratamahaṁ kṛtvā mātrā te saha putraka ,
tataḥ paramahṛṣṭātmā prāviśaṁ gṛhameva ca.
46. etat vratam aham kṛtvā mātrā te saha putraka
tataḥ paramahṛṣṭa ātmā prāviśam gṛham eva ca
46. Having observed this vow, O little son, together with your mother, I then entered the house with a greatly delighted soul (ātman).
प्रविष्टमात्रश्च गृहे सर्वं पश्यामि तन्नवम् ।
यद्भिन्नं यच्च वै दग्धं तेन विप्रेण पुत्रक ॥४७॥
47. praviṣṭamātraśca gṛhe sarvaṁ paśyāmi tannavam ,
yadbhinnaṁ yacca vai dagdhaṁ tena vipreṇa putraka.
47. praviṣṭamātraḥ ca gṛhe sarvam paśyāmi tat navam
yat bhinnam yat ca vai dagdham tena vipreṇa putraka
47. O son, as soon as I entered the house, I saw everything new, even that which had been broken and burned by that brahmin.
ततोऽहं विस्मयं प्राप्तः सर्वं दृष्ट्वा नवं दृढम् ।
अपूजयं च मनसा रौक्मिणेय द्विजं तदा ॥४८॥
48. tato'haṁ vismayaṁ prāptaḥ sarvaṁ dṛṣṭvā navaṁ dṛḍham ,
apūjayaṁ ca manasā raukmiṇeya dvijaṁ tadā.
48. tataḥ aham vismayam prāptaḥ sarvam dṛṣṭvā navam
dṛḍham apūjayam ca manasā raukmiṇeya dvijam tadā
48. Then I became filled with wonder upon seeing everything new and firmly restored. And at that time, O son of Rukmini, I mentally honored the brahmin (dvija).
इत्यहं रौक्मिणेयस्य पृच्छतो भरतर्षभ ।
माहात्म्यं द्विजमुख्यस्य सर्वमाख्यातवांस्तदा ॥४९॥
49. ityahaṁ raukmiṇeyasya pṛcchato bharatarṣabha ,
māhātmyaṁ dvijamukhyasya sarvamākhyātavāṁstadā.
49. iti aham raukmiṇeyasya pṛcchataḥ bharatarṣabha
māhātmyam dvijamukhyasya sarvam ākhyātavān tadā
49. Thus, O best of Bharatas, I then narrated the entire greatness (māhātmya) of that chief brahmin (dvija) to Rukmineya, who was asking about it.
तथा त्वमपि कौन्तेय ब्राह्मणान्सततं प्रभो ।
पूजयस्व महाभागान्वाग्भिर्दानैश्च नित्यदा ॥५०॥
50. tathā tvamapi kaunteya brāhmaṇānsatataṁ prabho ,
pūjayasva mahābhāgānvāgbhirdānaiśca nityadā.
50. tathā tvam api kaunteya brāhmaṇān satatam prabho
pūjayasa mahābhāgān vāgbhiḥ dānaiḥ ca nityadā
50. Similarly, O son of Kunti (Kaunteya), O lord, you too should constantly honor the highly revered brahmins with words and always with gifts (dāna).
एवं व्युष्टिमहं प्राप्तो ब्राह्मणानां प्रसादजाम् ।
यच्च मामाह भीष्मोऽयं तत्सत्यं भरतर्षभ ॥५१॥
51. evaṁ vyuṣṭimahaṁ prāpto brāhmaṇānāṁ prasādajām ,
yacca māmāha bhīṣmo'yaṁ tatsatyaṁ bharatarṣabha.
51. evam vyuṣṭim aham prāptaḥ brāhmaṇānām prasādajām
yat ca mām āha bhīṣmaḥ ayam tat satyam bharatarṣabha
51. evam aham brāhmaṇānām prasādajām vyuṣṭim prāptaḥ ca
yat ayam bhīṣmaḥ mām āha tat satyam bharatarṣabha
51. Thus, I attained this spiritual eminence, which arose from the grace of the brahmins. And what this Bhishma said to me, that is indeed true, O best of Bharatas.
