वैशंपायन उवाच ।
ततो घोरतरः शब्दो वने समभवत्तदा ।
भीमसेनार्जुनौ दृष्ट्वा क्षत्रियाणाममर्षिणाम् ॥१॥
1. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
tato ghorataraḥ śabdo vane samabhavattadā ,
bhīmasenārjunau dṛṣṭvā kṣatriyāṇāmamarṣiṇām.

1. Vaiśampāyana said: Then, at that moment, a most dreadful sound arose in the forest when the intolerant Kṣatriyas saw Bhīmasena and Arjuna.
तेषां ध्वजाग्राण्यभिवीक्ष्य राजा स्वयं दुरात्मा कुरुपुंगवानाम् ।
जयद्रथो याज्ञसेनीमुवाच रथे स्थितां भानुमतीं हतौजाः ॥२॥
2. teṣāṁ dhvajāgrāṇyabhivīkṣya rājā; svayaṁ durātmā kurupuṁgavānām ,
jayadratho yājñasenīmuvāca; rathe sthitāṁ bhānumatīṁ hataujāḥ.
2. teṣām dhvajāgrāṇi abhivīkṣya rājā
svayam durātmā kurupuṃgavānām
jayadrathaḥ yājñasenīm uvāca
rathe sthitām bhānumatīm hataujāḥ
2. Having observed the banner-tops of the best of the Kurus (Pāṇḍavas), King Jayadratha, who was wicked and whose spirit was broken, then spoke to Bhānumatī, who was seated in the chariot with Draupadī (Yājñasenī).
आयान्तीमे पञ्च रथा महान्तो मन्ये च कृष्णे पतयस्तवैते ।
सा जानती ख्यापय नः सुकेशि परं परं पाण्डवानां रथस्थम् ॥३॥
3. āyāntīme pañca rathā mahānto; manye ca kṛṣṇe patayastavaite ,
sā jānatī khyāpaya naḥ sukeśi; paraṁ paraṁ pāṇḍavānāṁ rathastham.
3. āyānti ime pañca rathāḥ mahāntaḥ
manye ca kṛṣṇe patayaḥ tava ete
sā jānatī khyāpaya naḥ sukeśi
param param pāṇḍavānām rathastham
3. These five mighty chariots are approaching. O Kṛṣṇā, I believe these are your husbands. O beautiful-haired one, you who know them, please identify each successive Pāṇḍava warrior seated in those chariots.
द्रौपद्युवाच ।
किं ते ज्ञातैर्मूढ महाधनुर्धरैरनायुष्यं कर्म कृत्वातिघोरम् ।
एते वीराः पतयो मे समेता न वः शेषः कश्चिदिहास्ति युद्धे ॥४॥
4. draupadyuvāca ,
kiṁ te jñātairmūḍha mahādhanurdharai;ranāyuṣyaṁ karma kṛtvātighoram ,
ete vīrāḥ patayo me sametā; na vaḥ śeṣaḥ kaścidihāsti yuddhe.
4. draupadī uvāca kim te jñātaiḥ mūḍha
mahādhanurdharaiḥ anāyuṣyam karma kṛtvā
atighoram ete vīrāḥ patayaḥ me sametāḥ
na vaḥ śeṣaḥ kaścid iha asti yuddhe
4. Draupadi said, "O foolish one, what is the use of those great archers, your kinsmen, after you have committed such an extremely dreadful deed that shortens life? My heroic husbands are assembled here; no trace of you will remain in this battle."
आख्यातव्यं त्वेव सर्वं मुमूर्षोर्मया तुभ्यं पृष्टया धर्म एषः ।
न मे व्यथा विद्यते त्वद्भयं वा संपश्यन्त्याः सानुजं धर्मराजम् ॥५॥
5. ākhyātavyaṁ tveva sarvaṁ mumūrṣo;rmayā tubhyaṁ pṛṣṭayā dharma eṣaḥ ,
na me vyathā vidyate tvadbhayaṁ vā; saṁpaśyantyāḥ sānujaṁ dharmarājam.
5. ākhyātavyam tu eva sarvam mumūrṣoḥ
mayā tubhyam pṛṣṭayā dharma eṣaḥ
na me vyathā vidyate tvatbhayam vā
saṃpaśyantyāḥ sānujam dharmarājam
5. As I have been questioned, I must tell you, who are on the verge of death, everything; this is my natural law (dharma). I feel no distress or fear of you, as I clearly see the king of righteousness (dharmarāja) together with his younger brothers.
यस्य ध्वजाग्रे नदतो मृदङ्गौ नन्दोपनन्दौ मधुरौ युक्तरूपौ ।
एतं स्वधर्मार्थविनिश्चयज्ञं सदा जनाः कृत्यवन्तोऽनुयान्ति ॥६॥
6. yasya dhvajāgre nadato mṛdaṅgau; nandopanandau madhurau yuktarūpau ,
etaṁ svadharmārthaviniścayajñaṁ; sadā janāḥ kṛtyavanto'nuyānti.
6. yasya dhvajāgre nadataḥ mṛdaṅgau
nandopanandau madhurau yuktarūpau
etam svadharmārthaviniścayajñam
sadā janāḥ kṛtyavantaḥ anuyānti
6. At the top of his banner, Nanda and Upananda, the two sweet and harmoniously shaped drums, roar. People who have a sense of duty always follow him, who understands the ascertainment of his own intrinsic nature (svadharma) and purpose.
य एष जाम्बूनदशुद्धगौरः प्रचण्डघोणस्तनुरायताक्षः ।
एतं कुरुश्रेष्ठतमं वदन्ति युधिष्ठिरं धर्मसुतं पतिं मे ॥७॥
7. ya eṣa jāmbūnadaśuddhagauraḥ; pracaṇḍaghoṇastanurāyatākṣaḥ ,
etaṁ kuruśreṣṭhatamaṁ vadanti; yudhiṣṭhiraṁ dharmasutaṁ patiṁ me.
7. yaḥ eṣaḥ jāmbūnadaśuddhagauraḥ
pracaṇḍaghoṇaḥ tanuḥ āyatākṣaḥ
etam kuruśreṣṭatamam vadanti
yudhiṣṭhiram dharmasutam patim me
7. He who possesses the pure luster of Jambūnada gold, with a prominent nose, a slender physique, and long eyes – people call him the best among the Kurus, Yudhishthira, the son of righteousness (dharma), my husband.
अप्येष शत्रोः शरणागतस्य दद्यात्प्राणान्धर्मचारी नृवीरः ।
परैह्येनं मूढ जवेन भूतये त्वमात्मनः प्राञ्जलिर्न्यस्तशस्त्रः ॥८॥
8. apyeṣa śatroḥ śaraṇāgatasya; dadyātprāṇāndharmacārī nṛvīraḥ ,
paraihyenaṁ mūḍha javena bhūtaye; tvamātmanaḥ prāñjalirnyastaśastraḥ.
8. api eṣaḥ śatroḥ śaraṇāgatasya dadyāt
prāṇān dharmacārī nṛvīraḥ
paraihi enam mūḍha javena bhūtaye tvam
ātmanaḥ prāñjaliḥ nyastaśastraḥ
8. Even this hero among men, who upholds righteousness (dharma), would grant lives to an enemy who has sought refuge. O foolish one, go to him quickly for your own well-being (ātman), with folded hands and your weapons laid down.
अथाप्येनं पश्यसि यं रथस्थं महाभुजं शालमिव प्रवृद्धम् ।
संदष्टोष्ठं भ्रुकुटीसंहतभ्रुवं वृकोदरो नाम पतिर्ममैषः ॥९॥
9. athāpyenaṁ paśyasi yaṁ rathasthaṁ; mahābhujaṁ śālamiva pravṛddham ,
saṁdaṣṭoṣṭhaṁ bhrukuṭīsaṁhatabhruvaṁ; vṛkodaro nāma patirmamaiṣaḥ.
9. atha api enam paśyasi yam rathastham
mahābhujaṃ śālam iva pravṛddham
saṃdaṣṭoṣṭham bhrukuṭīsaṃhatabhruvam
vṛkodaraḥ nāma patiḥ mama eṣaḥ
9. Moreover, the one whom you see on the chariot, mighty-armed, grown tall like a shala tree, with a bitten lip and eyebrows drawn together in a frown—this is my husband, named Vrikodara.
आजानेया बलिनः साधु दान्ता महाबलाः शूरमुदावहन्ति ।
एतस्य कर्माण्यतिमानुषाणि भीमेति शब्दोऽस्य गतः पृथिव्याम् ॥१०॥
10. ājāneyā balinaḥ sādhu dāntā; mahābalāḥ śūramudāvahanti ,
etasya karmāṇyatimānuṣāṇi; bhīmeti śabdo'sya gataḥ pṛthivyām.
10. ājāneyāḥ balinaḥ sādhu dāntāḥ
mahābalāḥ śūram udāvahanti etasya
karmāṇi atimānuṣāṇi bhīma
iti śabdaḥ asya gataḥ pṛthivyām
10. Noble steeds, powerful, well-tamed, and greatly strong, carry this hero. His deeds (karma) are superhuman; thus, his name 'Bhima' has spread throughout the earth.
नास्यापराद्धाः शेषमिहाप्नुवन्ति नाप्यस्य वैरं विस्मरते कदाचित् ।
वैरस्यान्तं संविधायोपयाति पश्चाच्छान्तिं न च गच्छत्यतीव ॥११॥
11. nāsyāparāddhāḥ śeṣamihāpnuvanti; nāpyasya vairaṁ vismarate kadācit ,
vairasyāntaṁ saṁvidhāyopayāti; paścācchāntiṁ na ca gacchatyatīva.
11. na asya aparāddhāḥ śeṣam iha āpnuvanti
na api asya vairam vismarate kadācit
vairasya antam saṃvidhāya upayāti
paścāt śāntim na ca gacchati atīva
11. Those who have wronged him do not survive here. Nor does he ever forget his enmity. Having brought his enmity to an end, he then approaches peace (śānti), but not excessively.
मृदुर्वदान्यो धृतिमान्यशस्वी जितेन्द्रियो वृद्धसेवी नृवीरः ।
भ्राता च शिष्यश्च युधिष्ठिरस्य धनंजयो नाम पतिर्ममैषः ॥१२॥
12. mṛdurvadānyo dhṛtimānyaśasvī; jitendriyo vṛddhasevī nṛvīraḥ ,
bhrātā ca śiṣyaśca yudhiṣṭhirasya; dhanaṁjayo nāma patirmamaiṣaḥ.
12. mṛduḥ vadānyaḥ dhṛtimān yaśasvī
jitendriyaḥ vṛddhasevī nṛvīraḥ
bhrātā ca śiṣyaḥ ca yudhiṣṭhirasya
dhanaṃjayaḥ nāma patiḥ mama eṣaḥ
12. This is my husband, named Dhananjaya. He is gentle, generous, resolute, famous, a master of his senses, respectful of elders, and a hero among men. He is also the brother and disciple of Yudhiṣṭhira.
यो वै न कामान्न भयान्न लोभात्त्यजेद्धर्मं न नृशंसं च कुर्यात् ।
स एष वैश्वानरतुल्यतेजाः कुन्तीसुतः शत्रुसहः प्रमाथी ॥१३॥
13. yo vai na kāmānna bhayānna lobhā;ttyajeddharmaṁ na nṛśaṁsaṁ ca kuryāt ,
sa eṣa vaiśvānaratulyatejāḥ; kuntīsutaḥ śatrusahaḥ pramāthī.
13. yaḥ vai na kāmāt na bhayāt na lobhāt
tyajet dharmam na nṛśaṃsam ca
kuryāt sa eṣaḥ vaiśvānarajulyatejāḥ
kuntīsutaḥ śatrusahaḥ pramāthī
13. He, indeed, who would not abandon his intrinsic nature (dharma) due to desire, fear, or greed, and would not commit cruelty—this very son of Kuntī possesses splendor like the universal fire (Vaiśvānara), endures his enemies, and is a destroyer.
यः सर्वधर्मार्थविनिश्चयज्ञो भयार्तानां भयहर्ता मनीषी ।
यस्योत्तमं रूपमाहुः पृथिव्यां यं पाण्डवाः परिरक्षन्ति सर्वे ॥१४॥
14. yaḥ sarvadharmārthaviniścayajño; bhayārtānāṁ bhayahartā manīṣī ,
yasyottamaṁ rūpamāhuḥ pṛthivyāṁ; yaṁ pāṇḍavāḥ parirakṣanti sarve.
14. yaḥ sarvadharmārthaviniścayajñaḥ
bhayārtānām bhayahartā manīṣī
yasya uttamam rūpam āhuḥ pṛthivyām
yam pāṇḍavāḥ parirakṣanti sarve
14. He is wise and knows the true ascertainment of all aspects of natural law (dharma) and purpose, and he removes the fear of those distressed by it. His excellent form is declared to be supreme on earth, and all the Pāṇḍavas protect him.
प्राणैर्गरीयांसमनुव्रतं वै स एष वीरो नकुलः पतिर्मे ।
यः खड्गयोधी लघुचित्रहस्तो महांश्च धीमान्सहदेवोऽद्वितीयः ॥१५॥
15. prāṇairgarīyāṁsamanuvrataṁ vai; sa eṣa vīro nakulaḥ patirme ,
yaḥ khaḍgayodhī laghucitrahasto; mahāṁśca dhīmānsahadevo'dvitīyaḥ.
15. prāṇaiḥ garīyāṃsam anuvratam vai
saḥ eṣaḥ vīraḥ nakulaḥ patiḥ me
yaḥ khaḍgayodhī laghucitrahastaḥ
mahān ca dhīmān sahadevaḥ advitīyaḥ
15. This hero, Nakula, is indeed my devoted husband, dearer than life itself. And Sahadeva is unequalled; he is a great and wise sword-fighter, quick and skillful with his hands.
यस्याद्य कर्म द्रक्ष्यसे मूढसत्त्व शतक्रतोर्वा दैत्यसेनासु संख्ये ।
शूरः कृतास्त्रो मतिमान्मनीषी प्रियंकरो धर्मसुतस्य राज्ञः ॥१६॥
16. yasyādya karma drakṣyase mūḍhasattva; śatakratorvā daityasenāsu saṁkhye ,
śūraḥ kṛtāstro matimānmanīṣī; priyaṁkaro dharmasutasya rājñaḥ.
16. yasya adya karma drakṣyase mūḍhasattva
śatakratoḥ vā daityasenāsu
saṃkhye śūraḥ kṛtāstraḥ matimān manīṣī
priyaṃkaraḥ dharmasutasya rājñaḥ
16. O foolish-minded one (mūḍhasattva), today you will witness his deeds (karma) in battle, which will be like those of Indra (śatakratu) or like those performed against the demon armies. He is heroic, skilled in weaponry, intelligent, sagacious, and benevolent towards the son of King Dharma (Yudhishthira).
य एष चन्द्रार्कसमानतेजा जघन्यजः पाण्डवानां प्रियश्च ।
बुद्ध्या समो यस्य नरो न विद्यते वक्ता तथा सत्सु विनिश्चयज्ञः ॥१७॥
17. ya eṣa candrārkasamānatejā; jaghanyajaḥ pāṇḍavānāṁ priyaśca ,
buddhyā samo yasya naro na vidyate; vaktā tathā satsu viniścayajñaḥ.
17. yaḥ eṣa candrārkasamānatejāḥ
jaghanyajaḥ pāṇḍavānām priyaḥ ca
buddhyā samaḥ yasya naraḥ na vidyate
vaktā tathā satsu viniścayajñaḥ
17. This is he whose brilliance is like that of the moon and the sun, the youngest of the Pandavas, and beloved. There is no person equal to him in intellect, and he is also a decisive speaker among the virtuous, skilled in discerning the right course of action.
स एष शूरो नित्यममर्षणश्च धीमान्प्राज्ञः सहदेवः पतिर्मे ।
त्यजेत्प्राणान्प्रविशेद्धव्यवाहं न त्वेवैष व्याहरेद्धर्मबाह्यम् ।
सदा मनस्वी क्षत्रधर्मे निविष्टः कुन्त्याः प्राणैरिष्टतमो नृवीरः ॥१८॥
18. sa eṣa śūro nityamamarṣaṇaśca; dhīmānprājñaḥ sahadevaḥ patirme ,
tyajetprāṇānpraviśeddhavyavāhaṁ; na tvevaiṣa vyāhareddharmabāhyam ,
sadā manasvī kṣatradharme niviṣṭaḥ; kuntyāḥ prāṇairiṣṭatamo nṛvīraḥ.
18. saḥ eṣa śūraḥ nityam amarṣaṇaḥ ca dhīmān prājñaḥ
sahadevaḥ patiḥ me tyajet prāṇān praviśet havyavāham
na tu eva eṣa vyāharet dharmabāhyam sadā manasvī
kṣatradharme niviṣṭaḥ kuntyāḥ prāṇaiḥ iṣṭatamaḥ nṛvīraḥ
18. This heroic one, my husband Sahadeva, is perpetually intolerant (amarṣaṇa), intelligent, and wise. He would rather give up his life or enter a sacrificial fire (havyavāha) than ever utter what is contrary to natural law (dharma). This high-minded hero among men (nṛvīra), always dedicated to the warrior's constitution (kṣatradharma), is the most cherished among Kunti's own children.
विशीर्यन्तीं नावमिवार्णवान्ते रत्नाभिपूर्णां मकरस्य पृष्ठे ।
सेनां तवेमां हतसर्वयोधां विक्षोभितां द्रक्ष्यसि पाण्डुपुत्रैः ॥१९॥
19. viśīryantīṁ nāvamivārṇavānte; ratnābhipūrṇāṁ makarasya pṛṣṭhe ,
senāṁ tavemāṁ hatasarvayodhāṁ; vikṣobhitāṁ drakṣyasi pāṇḍuputraiḥ.
19. viśīryantīm nāvam iva arṇavānte
ratnābhipūrṇām makarasya pṛṣṭhe
senām tava imām hatasarvayodhām
vikṣobhitām drakṣyasi pāṇḍuputraiḥ
19. You will see this army of yours, with all its warriors slain and utterly distraught by the sons of Pandu (Pāṇḍuputra), just as a ship laden with jewels crumbles at the ocean's edge upon the back of a sea-monster.
इत्येते वै कथिताः पाण्डुपुत्रा यांस्त्वं मोहादवमन्य प्रवृत्तः ।
यद्येतैस्त्वं मुच्यसेऽरिष्टदेहः पुनर्जन्म प्राप्स्यसे जीव एव ॥२०॥
20. ityete vai kathitāḥ pāṇḍuputrā; yāṁstvaṁ mohādavamanya pravṛttaḥ ,
yadyetaistvaṁ mucyase'riṣṭadehaḥ; punarjanma prāpsyase jīva eva.
20. ity ete vai kathitāḥ pāṇḍuputrāḥ
yān tvam mohāt avamanya pravṛttaḥ
yadi etaiḥ tvam mucyase ariṣṭadehaḥ
punaḥ janma prāpsyase jīvaḥ eva
20. These are indeed the sons of Pāṇḍu about whom I have spoken, and whom you, out of delusion, have proceeded to disrespect. If you manage to escape from them with your body unharmed, then you will attain rebirth (saṃsāra) even while alive.
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
ततः पार्थाः पञ्च पञ्चेन्द्रकल्पास्त्यक्त्वा त्रस्तान्प्राञ्जलींस्तान्पदातीन् ।
रथानीकं शरवर्षान्धकारं चक्रुः क्रुद्धाः सर्वतः संनिगृह्य ॥२१॥
21. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
tataḥ pārthāḥ pañca pañcendrakalpā;styaktvā trastānprāñjalīṁstānpadātīn ,
rathānīkaṁ śaravarṣāndhakāraṁ; cakruḥ kruddhāḥ sarvataḥ saṁnigṛhya.
21. vaiśaṃpāyanaḥ uvāca tataḥ pārthāḥ pañca
pañcendrakalpāḥ tyaktvā trastān prāñjalīn
tān padātīn rathānīkam śaravarṣāndhakāram
cakruḥ kruddhāḥ sarvataḥ saṃnigṛhya
21. Vaiśaṃpāyana said: Then the five Pārthas, who were equal to five Indras, abandoned those terrified foot-soldiers who stood with folded hands. Enraged, they completely surrounded the enemy's chariot division and darkened it with a shower of arrows.
