वैशंपायन उवाच ।

काञ्चने प्राङ्मुखो हृष्टो न्यषीदत्परमासने ॥१॥

1. Vaiśaṁpāyana said: Then, the king, Kuntī's son, with his anger gone and his distress subsided, sat down, facing east, delighted, on the excellent golden seat.
तमेवाभिमुखौ पीठे सेव्यास्तरणसंवृते ।
सात्यकिर्वासुदेवश्च निषीदतुररिंदमौ ॥२॥
2. tamevābhimukhau pīṭhe sevyāstaraṇasaṁvṛte ,
sātyakirvāsudevaśca niṣīdaturariṁdamau.

2. Satyaki and Vasudeva (Kṛṣṇa), the two subjugators of foes, sat down facing him on a throne covered with a splendid cushion.
मध्ये कृत्वा तु राजानं भीमसेनार्जुनावुभौ ।
निषीदतुर्महात्मानौ श्लक्ष्णयोर्मणिपीठयोः ॥३॥
3. madhye kṛtvā tu rājānaṁ bhīmasenārjunāvubhau ,
niṣīdaturmahātmānau ślakṣṇayormaṇipīṭhayoḥ.

3. Having placed the king in the middle, both Bhimasena and Arjuna, the two great souls (mahātman), sat down on two smooth, jeweled thrones.
दान्ते शय्यासने शुभ्रे जाम्बूनदविभूषिते ।
पृथापि सहदेवेन सहास्ते नकुलेन च ॥४॥
4. dānte śayyāsane śubhre jāmbūnadavibhūṣite ,
pṛthāpi sahadevena sahāste nakulena ca.

4. Pṛthā also sits with Sahadeva and Nakula on a pure, splendid couch-seat, adorned with gold.
सुधर्मा विदुरो धौम्यो धृतराष्ट्रश्च कौरवः ।
निषेदुर्ज्वलनाकारेष्वासनेषु पृथक्पृथक् ॥५॥
5. sudharmā viduro dhaumyo dhṛtarāṣṭraśca kauravaḥ ,
niṣedurjvalanākāreṣvāsaneṣu pṛthakpṛthak.

5. Sudharman, Vidura, Dhaumya, and Dhṛtarāṣṭra, the Kuru prince, sat down separately on seats that resembled blazing fires.
युयुत्सुः संजयश्चैव गान्धारी च यशस्विनी ।
धृतराष्ट्रो यतो राजा ततः सर्व उपाविशन् ॥६॥
6. yuyutsuḥ saṁjayaścaiva gāndhārī ca yaśasvinī ,
dhṛtarāṣṭro yato rājā tataḥ sarva upāviśan.

6. Yuyutsu, Sanjaya, and the glorious Gandhari, along with all the others, sat down, because Dhritarashtra was the king.
तत्रोपविष्टो धर्मात्मा श्वेताः सुमनसोऽस्पृशत् ।
स्वस्तिकानक्षतान्भूमिं सुवर्णं रजतं मणीन् ॥७॥
7. tatropaviṣṭo dharmātmā śvetāḥ sumanaso'spṛśat ,
svastikānakṣatānbhūmiṁ suvarṇaṁ rajataṁ maṇīn.
7. tatra upaviṣṭaḥ dharmātmā śvetāḥ sumanasaḥ aspṛśat
svastikān akṣatān bhūmim suvarṇam rajatam maṇīn

7. Seated there, the righteous one, whose very natural law (dharma) was righteousness, touched white flowers, auspicious symbols, unbroken rice grains, the ground, gold, silver, and jewels.
ततः प्रकृतयः सर्वाः पुरस्कृत्य पुरोहितम् ।
ददृशुर्धर्मराजानमादाय बहु मङ्गलम् ॥८॥
8. tataḥ prakṛtayaḥ sarvāḥ puraskṛtya purohitam ,
dadṛśurdharmarājānamādāya bahu maṅgalam.

8. Then all the citizens, having put the royal priest (purohita) at the forefront, saw Yudhishthira, the King of Righteousness (dharma), bringing many auspicious items.
पृथिवीं च सुवर्णं च रत्नानि विविधानि च ।
आभिषेचनिकं भाण्डं सर्वसंभारसंभृतम् ॥९॥
9. pṛthivīṁ ca suvarṇaṁ ca ratnāni vividhāni ca ,
ābhiṣecanikaṁ bhāṇḍaṁ sarvasaṁbhārasaṁbhṛtam.

9. They also brought earth, gold, and various jewels, along with all the coronation equipment, fully stocked with every necessary item.
काञ्चनौदुम्बरास्तत्र राजताः पृथिवीमयाः ।
पूर्णकुम्भाः सुमनसो लाजा बर्हींषि गोरसाः ॥१०॥
10. kāñcanaudumbarāstatra rājatāḥ pṛthivīmayāḥ ,
pūrṇakumbhāḥ sumanaso lājā barhīṁṣi gorasāḥ.

10. There were golden and fig-wood (kāñcanāudumbarāḥ) objects, silver (rājatāḥ) and earthen (pṛthivīmayāḥ) ones, full jars (pūrṇakumbhāḥ), flowers (sumanasaḥ), parched grain (lājāḥ), sacred grass (barhīṃṣi), and dairy products (gorasāḥ).
शमीपलाशपुंनागाः समिधो मधुसर्पिषी ।
स्रुव औदुम्बरः शङ्खास्तथा हेमविभूषिताः ॥११॥
11. śamīpalāśapuṁnāgāḥ samidho madhusarpiṣī ,
sruva audumbaraḥ śaṅkhāstathā hemavibhūṣitāḥ.

11. There were sacrificial fuel sticks (samidhaḥ) made of Śamī, Palāśa, and Punnāga wood (śamīpalāśapunnāgāḥ), honey and ghee (madhusarpiṣī), a sacrificial ladle (sruvaḥ) made of Udumbara wood (audumbaraḥ), and also conch shells (śaṅkhāḥ) adorned with gold (hemavibhūṣitāḥ).
दाशार्हेणाभ्यनुज्ञातस्तत्र धौम्यः पुरोहितः ।
प्रागुदक्प्रवणां वेदीं लक्षणेनोपलिप्य ह ॥१२॥
12. dāśārheṇābhyanujñātastatra dhaumyaḥ purohitaḥ ,
prāgudakpravaṇāṁ vedīṁ lakṣaṇenopalipya ha.

12. There, authorized by Dāśārha (dāśārheṇa), the priest (purohitaḥ) Dhaumya (dhaumyaḥ), having smeared the altar (vedīm) which sloped towards the northeast (prāgudakpravaṇām) according to prescriptions (lakṣaṇena), indeed (ha).
व्याघ्रचर्मोत्तरे श्लक्ष्णे सर्वतोभद्र आसने ।
दृढपादप्रतिष्ठाने हुताशनसमत्विषि ॥१३॥
13. vyāghracarmottare ślakṣṇe sarvatobhadra āsane ,
dṛḍhapādapratiṣṭhāne hutāśanasamatviṣi.

13. (tatra) āsane vyāghracarmottare ślakṣṇe

13. ...on a smooth (ślakṣṇe) and perfectly auspicious (sarvatobhadre) seat (āsane), which was covered with a tiger skin (vyāghracarmottare), had firmly fixed legs (dṛḍhapādapratiṣṭhāne), and shone with a brilliance like fire (hutāśanasamatviṣi).
उपवेश्य महात्मानं कृष्णां च द्रुपदात्मजाम् ।
जुहाव पावकं धीमान्विधिमन्त्रपुरस्कृतम् ॥१४॥
14. upaveśya mahātmānaṁ kṛṣṇāṁ ca drupadātmajām ,
juhāva pāvakaṁ dhīmānvidhimantrapuraskṛtam.

14. Having seated the great-souled (mahātman) Yudhishthira and Krishna, the daughter of Drupada, the wise one performed offerings into the fire, preceded by proper rites and sacred incantations (mantras).
अभ्यषिञ्चत्पतिं पृथ्व्याः कुन्तीपुत्रं युधिष्ठिरम् ।
धृतराष्ट्रश्च राजर्षिः सर्वाः प्रकृतयस्तथा ॥१५॥
15. abhyaṣiñcatpatiṁ pṛthvyāḥ kuntīputraṁ yudhiṣṭhiram ,
dhṛtarāṣṭraśca rājarṣiḥ sarvāḥ prakṛtayastathā.
15. abhyaṣiñcat patim pṛthvyāḥ kuntīputram yudhiṣṭhiram
dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ ca rājarṣiḥ sarvāḥ prakṛtayaḥ tathā

15. Dhritarashtra, the royal sage, and all the subjects (prakṛti) anointed Yudhishthira, the son of Kunti and lord of the earth.
ततोऽनुवादयामासुः पणवानकदुन्दुभीः ।
धर्मराजोऽपि तत्सर्वं प्रतिजग्राह धर्मतः ॥१६॥
16. tato'nuvādayāmāsuḥ paṇavānakadundubhīḥ ,
dharmarājo'pi tatsarvaṁ pratijagrāha dharmataḥ.
16. tataḥ anuvādayāmāsuḥ paṇavānakadundubhīḥ
dharmarājaḥ api tat sarvam pratijagrāha dharmataḥ
16. tataḥ paṇavānakadundubhīḥ anuvādayāmāsuḥ

16. Then they caused paṇava drums, ānaka drums, and dundubhi drums to be sounded. And the King of Righteousness (Dharmarāja) accepted all that in accordance with natural law (dharma).
पूजयामास तांश्चापि विधिवद्भूरिदक्षिणः ।
ततो निष्कसहस्रेण ब्राह्मणान्स्वस्ति वाचयत् ।
वेदाध्ययनसंपन्नाञ्शीलवृत्तसमन्वितान् ॥१७॥
17. pūjayāmāsa tāṁścāpi vidhivadbhūridakṣiṇaḥ ,
tato niṣkasahasreṇa brāhmaṇānsvasti vācayat ,
vedādhyayanasaṁpannāñśīlavṛttasamanvitān.
17. pūjayāmāsa tān ca api vidhivat
bhūridakṣiṇaḥ tataḥ niṣkasahasreṇa
brāhmaṇān svasti vācayat
vedādhyayanasampannān śīlavṛttasamanvitān

17. And he, who gave ample offerings (dakṣiṇā), honored them according to the proper rites. Then, with a thousand gold coins (niṣkas), he caused the Brahmins - who were accomplished in Vedic study and endowed with good conduct and character - to pronounce blessings.
ते प्रीता ब्राह्मणा राजन्स्वस्त्यूचुर्जयमेव च ।
हंसा इव च नर्दन्तः प्रशशंसुर्युधिष्ठिरम् ॥१८॥
18. te prītā brāhmaṇā rājansvastyūcurjayameva ca ,
haṁsā iva ca nardantaḥ praśaśaṁsuryudhiṣṭhiram.
18. te prītāḥ brāhmaṇāḥ rājan svasti ūcuḥ jayam eva ca
haṃsāḥ iva ca nardantaḥ praśaśaṃsuḥ yudhiṣṭhiram
18. rājan te prītāḥ brāhmaṇāḥ svasti jayam ca eva ūcuḥ
ca haṃsāḥ iva nardantaḥ yudhiṣṭhiram praśaśaṃsuḥ
18. O King, those pleased Brahmins wished 'blessings' and 'victory' upon him. And, roaring like swans, they praised Yudhishthira.
युधिष्ठिर महाबाहो दिष्ट्या जयसि पाण्डव ।
दिष्ट्या स्वधर्मं प्राप्तोऽसि विक्रमेण महाद्युते ॥१९॥
19. yudhiṣṭhira mahābāho diṣṭyā jayasi pāṇḍava ,
diṣṭyā svadharmaṁ prāpto'si vikrameṇa mahādyute.

svadharmam prāptaḥ asi vikrameṇa mahādyute
19. yudhiṣṭhira mahābāho pāṇḍava diṣṭyā jayasi

19. O Yudhishthira, mighty-armed Pandava, it is fortunate that you are victorious! Fortunately, O greatly radiant one, you have attained your own intrinsic nature (dharma) through your valor.
दिष्ट्या गाण्डीवधन्वा च भीमसेनश्च पाण्डवः ।
त्वं चापि कुशली राजन्माद्रीपुत्रौ च पाण्डवौ ॥२०॥
20. diṣṭyā gāṇḍīvadhanvā ca bhīmasenaśca pāṇḍavaḥ ,
tvaṁ cāpi kuśalī rājanmādrīputrau ca pāṇḍavau.

tvam ca api kuśalī rājan mādrīputrau ca pāṇḍavau

20. Fortunately, the wielder of the Gāṇḍīva bow (Arjuna), and Bhimasena the Pandava, and you, O King, are also well, as are the two sons of Madri, the Pandavas.
मुक्ता वीरक्षयादस्मात्संग्रामान्निहतद्विषः ।
क्षिप्रमुत्तरकालानि कुरु कार्याणि पाण्डव ॥२१॥
21. muktā vīrakṣayādasmātsaṁgrāmānnihatadviṣaḥ ,
kṣipramuttarakālāni kuru kāryāṇi pāṇḍava.
21. muktāḥ vīrakṣayāt asmāt saṅgrāmāt nihatadviṣaḥ
kṣipram uttarakālāni kuru kāryāṇi pāṇḍava
21. asmāt vīrakṣayāt saṅgrāmāt muktāḥ nihatadviṣaḥ
pāṇḍava kṣipram uttarakālāni kāryāṇi kuru
21. Freed from this battle, which caused the destruction of heroes, and with your enemies slain, O Pandava, swiftly undertake the subsequent tasks.
ततः प्रत्यर्चितः सद्भिर्धर्मराजो युधिष्ठिरः ।
प्रतिपेदे महद्राज्यं सुहृद्भिः सह भारत ॥२२॥
22. tataḥ pratyarcitaḥ sadbhirdharmarājo yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ,
pratipede mahadrājyaṁ suhṛdbhiḥ saha bhārata.

22. O Bhārata, then King Yudhiṣṭhira, the sovereign of righteousness (dharma), having been duly honored by the virtuous, regained a great kingdom together with his well-wishers.
