मार्कण्डेय उवाच ।
राघवस्तु ससौमित्रिः सुग्रीवेणाभिपालितः ।
वसन्माल्यवतः पृष्ठे ददर्श विमलं नभः ॥१॥
1. mārkaṇḍeya uvāca ,
rāghavastu sasaumitriḥ sugrīveṇābhipālitaḥ ,
vasanmālyavataḥ pṛṣṭhe dadarśa vimalaṁ nabhaḥ.

1. Mārkaṇḍeya spoke: Rāghava (Rāma), with Saumitri (Lakṣmaṇa) and protected by Sugrīva, saw the clear sky while residing on the summit of Mount Mālyavat.
स दृष्ट्वा विमले व्योम्नि निर्मलं शशलक्षणम् ।
ग्रहनक्षत्रताराभिरनुयातममित्रहा ॥२॥
2. sa dṛṣṭvā vimale vyomni nirmalaṁ śaśalakṣaṇam ,
grahanakṣatratārābhiranuyātamamitrahā.

2. The destroyer of foes (Rāma) saw in the clear sky the spotless moon, which was accompanied by planets, constellations, and stars.
कुमुदोत्पलपद्मानां गन्धमादाय वायुना ।
महीधरस्थः शीतेन सहसा प्रतिबोधितः ॥३॥
3. kumudotpalapadmānāṁ gandhamādāya vāyunā ,
mahīdharasthaḥ śītena sahasā pratibodhitaḥ.

mahīdhara-sthaḥ śītena sahasā pratibodhitaḥ
3. The one standing on the mountain was suddenly awakened by the cold wind, which carried the fragrance of water lilies, blue lotuses, and pink lotuses.
प्रभाते लक्ष्मणं वीरमभ्यभाषत दुर्मनाः ।
सीतां संस्मृत्य धर्मात्मा रुद्धां राक्षसवेश्मनि ॥४॥
4. prabhāte lakṣmaṇaṁ vīramabhyabhāṣata durmanāḥ ,
sītāṁ saṁsmṛtya dharmātmā ruddhāṁ rākṣasaveśmani.
4. prabhāte lakṣmaṇam vīram abhyabhāṣata durmanāḥ
sītām saṃsmṛtya dharmātmā ruddhām rākṣasa-veśmani
4. In the morning, the righteous (dharmātmā) Rama, distressed in mind, spoke to the heroic Lakṣmaṇa, having remembered Sītā, who was imprisoned in the demon's abode.
गच्छ लक्ष्मण जानीहि किष्किन्धायां कपीश्वरम् ।
प्रमत्तं ग्राम्यधर्मेषु कृतघ्नं स्वार्थपण्डितम् ॥५॥
5. gaccha lakṣmaṇa jānīhi kiṣkindhāyāṁ kapīśvaram ,
pramattaṁ grāmyadharmeṣu kṛtaghnaṁ svārthapaṇḍitam.
5. gaccha lakṣmaṇa jānīhi kiṣkindhāyām kapīśvaram
pramattam grāmya-dharmeṣu kṛtaghnam svārtha-paṇḍitam
5. Go, Lakṣmaṇa! Find the king of monkeys in Kiṣkindhā, who is negligent in worldly affairs, ungrateful, and skilled only in serving his own interests.
योऽसौ कुलाधमो मूढो मया राज्येऽभिषेचितः ।
सर्ववानरगोपुच्छा यमृक्षाश्च भजन्ति वै ॥६॥
6. yo'sau kulādhamo mūḍho mayā rājye'bhiṣecitaḥ ,
sarvavānaragopucchā yamṛkṣāśca bhajanti vai.
6. yaḥ asau kulādhamaḥ mūḍhaḥ mayā rājye abhiṣecitaḥ
sarva-vānara-gopucchāḥ yam ṛkṣāḥ ca bhajanti vai
6. That foolish one, the disgrace of his lineage, whom I installed in the kingdom, and whom all the monkeys and bears serve.
यदर्थं निहतो वाली मया रघुकुलोद्वह ।
त्वया सह महाबाहो किष्किन्धोपवने तदा ॥७॥
7. yadarthaṁ nihato vālī mayā raghukulodvaha ,
tvayā saha mahābāho kiṣkindhopavane tadā.
7. yadartham nihataḥ vālī mayā raghukulodvaha
tvayā saha mahābāho kiṣkindhopavane tadā
7. O upholder of Raghu's lineage, O mighty-armed one, it was for this very purpose that Vali was killed by me, with you (by my side), at that time in the grove of Kiṣkindhā.
कृतघ्नं तमहं मन्ये वानरापसदं भुवि ।
यो मामेवंगतो मूढो न जानीतेऽद्य लक्ष्मण ॥८॥
8. kṛtaghnaṁ tamahaṁ manye vānarāpasadaṁ bhuvi ,
yo māmevaṁgato mūḍho na jānīte'dya lakṣmaṇa.
8. kṛtaghnam tam aham manye vānarāpasadam bhuvi
yaḥ mām evaṃgataḥ mūḍhaḥ na jānīte adya lakṣmaṇa
8. O Lakṣmaṇa, I consider that ungrateful (kṛtaghna), foolish fellow, who is now in such a state, to be the lowest of monkeys on earth, because he does not recognize me.
असौ मन्ये न जानीते समयप्रतिपादनम् ।
कृतोपकारं मां नूनमवमन्याल्पया धिया ॥९॥
9. asau manye na jānīte samayapratipādanam ,
kṛtopakāraṁ māṁ nūnamavamanyālpayā dhiyā.
9. asau manye na jānīte samayapratipādanam
kṛtopakāram mām nūnam avamanya alpayā dhiyā
9. I think he (Sugrīva) certainly does not understand the fulfillment of the agreement, having surely disrespected me, his benefactor, with his shallow intellect.
यदि तावदनुद्युक्तः शेते कामसुखात्मकः ।
नेतव्यो वालिमार्गेण सर्वभूतगतिं त्वया ॥१०॥
10. yadi tāvadanudyuktaḥ śete kāmasukhātmakaḥ ,
netavyo vālimārgeṇa sarvabhūtagatiṁ tvayā.
10. yadi tāvat anudyuktaḥ śete kāmasukhātmakaḥ
netavyaḥ vālimārgeṇa sarvabhūtagatim tvayā
10. If he remains inactive and given to sensual pleasures, then he must be led by you on Vali's path to the destination of all beings (death).
अथापि घटतेऽस्माकमर्थे वानरपुंगवः ।
तमादायैहि काकुत्स्थ त्वरावान्भव मा चिरम् ॥११॥
11. athāpi ghaṭate'smākamarthe vānarapuṁgavaḥ ,
tamādāyaihi kākutstha tvarāvānbhava mā ciram.
11. atha api ghaṭate asmākam arthe vānarapuṅgavaḥ
tam ādāya ehi kākutstha tvarāvān bhava mā ciram
11. Nevertheless, the chief of monkeys is suitable for our cause. O Rama (kākutstha), bring him along and be swift; do not delay.
इत्युक्तो लक्ष्मणो भ्रात्रा गुरुवाक्यहिते रतः ।
प्रतस्थे रुचिरं गृह्य समार्गणगुणं धनुः ।
किष्किन्धाद्वारमासाद्य प्रविवेशानिवारितः ॥१२॥
12. ityukto lakṣmaṇo bhrātrā guruvākyahite rataḥ ,
pratasthe ruciraṁ gṛhya samārgaṇaguṇaṁ dhanuḥ ,
kiṣkindhādvāramāsādya praviveśānivāritaḥ.
12. iti uktaḥ lakṣmaṇaḥ bhrātrā
guruvākyahite rataḥ pratasthe ruciraṃ
gṛhya samārgaṇaguṇam dhanuḥ kiṣkindhādvāram
āsādya praviveśa anivāritaḥ
12. Thus addressed by his brother, Lakshmana, devoted to the counsel of his elder (guru), set out. He took his beautiful bow, complete with arrow and string, and having reached the gate of Kishkindha, entered unhindered.
सक्रोध इति तं मत्वा राजा प्रत्युद्ययौ हरिः ।
तं सदारो विनीतात्मा सुग्रीवः प्लवगाधिपः ।
पूजया प्रतिजग्राह प्रीयमाणस्तदर्हया ॥१३॥
13. sakrodha iti taṁ matvā rājā pratyudyayau hariḥ ,
taṁ sadāro vinītātmā sugrīvaḥ plavagādhipaḥ ,
pūjayā pratijagrāha prīyamāṇastadarhayā.

udyayau hariḥ tam sadāraḥ vinītātmā
sugrīvaḥ plavagādhipaḥ pūjayā
prati jagrāha prīyamāṇaḥ tadarhayā
13. The king, Sugriva, the monkey chieftain, at first thinking Lakshmana was angry, went to meet him. Then, Sugriva, humble-minded (vinītātmā) and accompanied by his wife, respectfully received Lakshmana with appropriate honors, being greatly pleased.
तमब्रवीद्रामवचः सौमित्रिरकुतोभयः ।
स तत्सर्वमशेषेण श्रुत्वा प्रह्वः कृताञ्जलिः ॥१४॥
14. tamabravīdrāmavacaḥ saumitrirakutobhayaḥ ,
sa tatsarvamaśeṣeṇa śrutvā prahvaḥ kṛtāñjaliḥ.
14. tam abravīt rāmavacaḥ saumitriḥ akutobhayaḥ sa
tat sarvam aśeṣeṇa śrutvā prahvaḥ kṛtāñjaliḥ
14. Lakshmana (saumitri), being fearless, then spoke Rama's message to him (Sugriva). Having heard all of that completely, Sugriva became humble and stood with folded hands.
सभृत्यदारो राजेन्द्र सुग्रीवो वानराधिपः ।
इदमाह वचः प्रीतो लक्ष्मणं नरकुञ्जरम् ॥१५॥
15. sabhṛtyadāro rājendra sugrīvo vānarādhipaḥ ,
idamāha vacaḥ prīto lakṣmaṇaṁ narakuñjaram.
15. sabhṛtyadāraḥ rājendra sugrīvaḥ vānarādhipaḥ
idam āha vacaḥ prītaḥ lakṣmaṇam narakuñjaram
15. O best of kings, Sugrīva, the chief of monkeys, along with his servants and wife, pleased, spoke these words to Lakṣmaṇa, the best of men.
नास्मि लक्ष्मण दुर्मेधा न कृतघ्नो न निर्घृणः ।
श्रूयतां यः प्रयत्नो मे सीतापर्येषणे कृतः ॥१६॥
16. nāsmi lakṣmaṇa durmedhā na kṛtaghno na nirghṛṇaḥ ,
śrūyatāṁ yaḥ prayatno me sītāparyeṣaṇe kṛtaḥ.
16. na asmi lakṣmaṇa durmedhāḥ na kṛtaghnaḥ na nirghṛṇaḥ
śrūyatām yaḥ prayatnaḥ me sītāparyeṣaṇe kṛtaḥ
16. O Lakṣmaṇa, I am not foolish, nor ungrateful, nor merciless. Let the effort I have made in the search for Sītā be heard.
दिशः प्रस्थापिताः सर्वे विनीता हरयो मया ।
सर्वेषां च कृतः कालो मासेनागमनं पुनः ॥१७॥
17. diśaḥ prasthāpitāḥ sarve vinītā harayo mayā ,
sarveṣāṁ ca kṛtaḥ kālo māsenāgamanaṁ punaḥ.
17. diśaḥ prasthāpitāḥ sarve vinītāḥ harayaḥ mayā
sarveṣām ca kṛtaḥ kālaḥ māsena āgamanam punaḥ
17. All the disciplined monkeys have been sent by me in all directions. A time limit has also been set for their return within a month.
यैरियं सवना साद्रिः सपुरा सागराम्बरा ।
विचेतव्या मही वीर सग्रामनगराकरा ॥१८॥
18. yairiyaṁ savanā sādriḥ sapurā sāgarāmbarā ,
vicetavyā mahī vīra sagrāmanagarākarā.
18. yaiḥ iyam savanā sādrīḥ sapurā sāgarāmbarā
vicetavyā mahī vīra sagrāmanagarākarā
18. O hero, this entire earth, with its forests, mountains, cities, and with oceans as its garment, including its villages, towns, and mines, is to be thoroughly searched by them.
स मासः पञ्चरात्रेण पूर्णो भवितुमर्हति ।
ततः श्रोष्यसि रामेण सहितः सुमहत्प्रियम् ॥१९॥
19. sa māsaḥ pañcarātreṇa pūrṇo bhavitumarhati ,
tataḥ śroṣyasi rāmeṇa sahitaḥ sumahatpriyam.
19. saḥ māsaḥ pañcarātreṇa pūrṇaḥ bhavitum arhati
tataḥ śroṣyasi rāmeṇa sahitaḥ sumahatpriyam
19. That month should be completed within five nights. After that, you, along with Rāma, will hear very pleasing and significant news.
इत्युक्तो लक्ष्मणस्तेन वानरेन्द्रेण धीमता ।
त्यक्त्वा रोषमदीनात्मा सुग्रीवं प्रत्यपूजयत् ॥२०॥
20. ityukto lakṣmaṇastena vānarendreṇa dhīmatā ,
tyaktvā roṣamadīnātmā sugrīvaṁ pratyapūjayat.
20. iti uktaḥ lakṣmaṇaḥ tena vānarendreṇa dhīmatā
tyaktvā roṣam adīnātmā sugrīvam pratyapūjayat
20. Thus addressed by that intelligent chief of monkeys (vānarendra), Lakṣmaṇa, whose spirit (ātman) was noble, abandoned his anger and honored Sugrīva in return.
स रामं सहसुग्रीवो माल्यवत्पृष्ठमास्थितम् ।
अभिगम्योदयं तस्य कार्यस्य प्रत्यवेदयत् ॥२१॥
21. sa rāmaṁ sahasugrīvo mālyavatpṛṣṭhamāsthitam ,
abhigamyodayaṁ tasya kāryasya pratyavedayat.
21. saḥ rāmam sahasugrīvaḥ mālyavatpṛṣṭham āsthitam
abhigamya udayam tasya kāryasya pratyavedayat
21. He (Lakṣmaṇa), accompanied by Sugrīva, approached Rāma, who was seated on the Malyavat peak, and reported the outcome of that task.
इत्येवं वानरेन्द्रास्ते समाजग्मुः सहस्रशः ।
दिशस्तिस्रो विचित्याथ न तु ये दक्षिणां गताः ॥२२॥
22. ityevaṁ vānarendrāste samājagmuḥ sahasraśaḥ ,
diśastisro vicityātha na tu ye dakṣiṇāṁ gatāḥ.
22. iti evam vānarendrāḥ te samājagmuḥ sahasraśaḥ
diśaḥ tisraḥ vicitya atha na tu ye dakṣiṇām gatāḥ
22. Thus, thousands of those monkey chiefs (vānarendra) assembled, having searched in three directions. But those who had gone to the south did not come back.
आचख्युस्ते तु रामाय महीं सागरमेखलाम् ।
विचितां न तु वैदेह्या दर्शनं रावणस्य वा ॥२३॥
23. ācakhyuste tu rāmāya mahīṁ sāgaramekhalām ,
vicitāṁ na tu vaidehyā darśanaṁ rāvaṇasya vā.
23. ācakhyuḥ te tu rāmāya mahīm sāgaramekhalām
vicitām na tu vaidehyāḥ darśanam rāvaṇasya vā
23. They reported to Rāma that they had searched the entire earth, which is girdled by the ocean, but they found no sign of Vaidehī (Sītā) or Rāvaṇa.
गतास्तु दक्षिणामाशां ये वै वानरपुंगवाः ।
आशावांस्तेषु काकुत्स्थः प्राणानार्तोऽप्यधारयत् ॥२४॥
24. gatāstu dakṣiṇāmāśāṁ ye vai vānarapuṁgavāḥ ,
āśāvāṁsteṣu kākutsthaḥ prāṇānārto'pyadhārayat.
24. gatāḥ tu dakṣiṇām āśām ye vai vānarapuṃgavāḥ
āśāvān teṣu kākutsthaḥ prāṇān ārtaḥ api adhārayat
24. Among those excellent monkeys (vānarapuṃgavāḥ) who had gone to the southern direction, Rāma (kākutsthaḥ), though afflicted, still maintained his life, sustained by hope.
द्विमासोपरमे काले व्यतीते प्लवगास्ततः ।
सुग्रीवमभिगम्येदं त्वरिता वाक्यमब्रुवन् ॥२५॥
25. dvimāsoparame kāle vyatīte plavagāstataḥ ,
sugrīvamabhigamyedaṁ tvaritā vākyamabruvan.
25. dvimāsoparame kāle vyatīte plavagāḥ tataḥ
sugrīvam abhigamya idam tvaritāḥ vākyam abruvan
25. When the two-month period had elapsed, the monkeys (plavagāḥ) quickly approached Sugrīva and spoke these words.
रक्षितं वालिना यत्तत्स्फीतं मधुवनं महत् ।
त्वया च प्लवगश्रेष्ठ तद्भुङ्क्ते पवनात्मजः ॥२६॥
26. rakṣitaṁ vālinā yattatsphītaṁ madhuvanaṁ mahat ,
tvayā ca plavagaśreṣṭha tadbhuṅkte pavanātmajaḥ.
26. rakṣitam vālinā yat tat sphītam madhuvanam mahat
tvayā ca plavagaśreṣṭha tat bhuṅkte pavanātmajaḥ
26. That great and prosperous Madhuvana (honey-forest), which was protected by Vālin, and also by you, O best of monkeys, is being consumed by Hanumān (pavanātmajaḥ).
वालिपुत्रोऽङ्गदश्चैव ये चान्ये प्लवगर्षभाः ।
विचेतुं दक्षिणामाशां राजन्प्रस्थापितास्त्वया ॥२७॥
27. vāliputro'ṅgadaścaiva ye cānye plavagarṣabhāḥ ,
vicetuṁ dakṣiṇāmāśāṁ rājanprasthāpitāstvayā.
27. vāliputraḥ aṅgadaḥ ca eva ye ca anye plavagarṣabhāḥ
vicetum dakṣiṇām āśām rājan prasthāpitāḥ tvayā
27. O King, Vāli's son Aṅgada, along with other eminent monkeys, was dispatched by you to search the southern direction.
तेषां तं प्रणयं श्रुत्वा मेने स कृतकृत्यताम् ।
कृतार्थानां हि भृत्यानामेतद्भवति चेष्टितम् ॥२८॥
28. teṣāṁ taṁ praṇayaṁ śrutvā mene sa kṛtakṛtyatām ,
kṛtārthānāṁ hi bhṛtyānāmetadbhavati ceṣṭitam.
28. teṣām tam praṇayam śrutvā mene sa kṛtakṛtyatām
kṛtārthānām hi bhṛtyānām etat bhavati ceṣṭitam
28. Upon observing their cheerful and devoted demeanor, he (Sugrīva) considered the task accomplished, for such indeed is the conduct of servants whose purpose (artha) has been fulfilled.
स तद्रामाय मेधावी शशंस प्लवगर्षभः ।
रामश्चाप्यनुमानेन मेने दृष्टां तु मैथिलीम् ॥२९॥
29. sa tadrāmāya medhāvī śaśaṁsa plavagarṣabhaḥ ,
rāmaścāpyanumānena mene dṛṣṭāṁ tu maithilīm.
29. sa tat rāmāya medhāvī śasaṃsa plavagarṣabhaḥ
rāmaḥ ca api anumānena mene dṛṣṭām tu maithilīm
29. That intelligent, eminent monkey reported that (news) to Rāma. And Rāma, through inference, concluded that Maithilī (Sītā) had indeed been seen.
हनूमत्प्रमुखाश्चापि विश्रान्तास्ते प्लवंगमाः ।
अभिजग्मुर्हरीन्द्रं तं रामलक्ष्मणसंनिधौ ॥३०॥
30. hanūmatpramukhāścāpi viśrāntāste plavaṁgamāḥ ,
abhijagmurharīndraṁ taṁ rāmalakṣmaṇasaṁnidhau.
30. hanūmatpramukhāḥ ca api viśrāntāḥ te plavaṅgamāḥ
abhijagmuḥ harīndram tam rāmalakṣmaṇasaṃnidhau
30. And those monkeys, with Hanumān as their chief and having rested, approached the lord of monkeys (Sugrīva) in the presence of Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa.
गतिं च मुखवर्णं च दृष्ट्वा रामो हनूमतः ।
अगमत्प्रत्ययं भूयो दृष्टा सीतेति भारत ॥३१॥
31. gatiṁ ca mukhavarṇaṁ ca dṛṣṭvā rāmo hanūmataḥ ,
agamatpratyayaṁ bhūyo dṛṣṭā sīteti bhārata.
31. gatim ca mukhavarṇam ca dṛṣṭvā rāmaḥ hanūmataḥ
agamat pratyayam bhūyaḥ dṛṣṭā sītā iti bhārata
31. O Bharata, after observing Hanumat's gait and facial expression, Rama became firmly convinced again, thinking, "Sita has been found."
हनूमत्प्रमुखास्ते तु वानराः पूर्णमानसाः ।
प्रणेमुर्विधिवद्रामं सुग्रीवं लक्ष्मणं तथा ॥३२॥
32. hanūmatpramukhāste tu vānarāḥ pūrṇamānasāḥ ,
praṇemurvidhivadrāmaṁ sugrīvaṁ lakṣmaṇaṁ tathā.
32. hanūmatpramukhāḥ te tu vānarāḥ pūrṇamānasāḥ
praṇemuḥ vidhivat rāmam sugrīvam lakṣmaṇam tathā
32. Those monkeys, led by Hanumat, with their minds full of joy, then bowed down ceremoniously to Rama, Sugriva, and Lakshmana.
तानुवाचागतान्रामः प्रगृह्य सशरं धनुः ।
अपि मां जीवयिष्यध्वमपि वः कृतकृत्यता ॥३३॥
33. tānuvācāgatānrāmaḥ pragṛhya saśaraṁ dhanuḥ ,
api māṁ jīvayiṣyadhvamapi vaḥ kṛtakṛtyatā.
33. tān uvāca āgatān rāmaḥ pragṛhya saśaram dhanuḥ
api mām jīvayiṣyadhvam api vaḥ kṛtakṛtyatā
33. Rama, grasping his bow along with its arrows, addressed them upon their arrival: "Will you bring me back to life? Has your mission been accomplished?"
अपि राज्यमयोध्यायां कारयिष्याम्यहं पुनः ।
निहत्य समरे शत्रूनाहृत्य जनकात्मजाम् ॥३४॥
34. api rājyamayodhyāyāṁ kārayiṣyāmyahaṁ punaḥ ,
nihatya samare śatrūnāhṛtya janakātmajām.
34. api rājyam ayodhyāyām kārayiṣyāmi aham punaḥ
nihatya samare śatrūn āhṛtya janakātmajām
34. “Will I again govern the kingdom in Ayodhya, after having killed the enemies in battle and brought back Janaka's daughter (Sītā)?”
अमोक्षयित्वा वैदेहीमहत्वा च रिपून्रणे ।
हृतदारोऽवधूतश्च नाहं जीवितुमुत्सहे ॥३५॥
35. amokṣayitvā vaidehīmahatvā ca ripūnraṇe ,
hṛtadāro'vadhūtaśca nāhaṁ jīvitumutsahe.
35. amoṣayitvā vaidehīm ahatvā ca ripūn raṇe
hṛtadāraḥ avadhūtaḥ ca na ahaṃ jīvitum utsahe
35. Without liberating Vaidehi and without slaying the enemies in battle, I, whose wife has been abducted and who has been humiliated, am unwilling to continue living.
इत्युक्तवचनं रामं प्रत्युवाचानिलात्मजः ।
प्रियमाख्यामि ते राम दृष्टा सा जानकी मया ॥३६॥
36. ityuktavacanaṁ rāmaṁ pratyuvācānilātmajaḥ ,
priyamākhyāmi te rāma dṛṣṭā sā jānakī mayā.
36. iti uktavacanam rāmam prati uvāca anilātmajaḥ
priyam ākhyāmi te rāma dṛṣṭā sā jānakī mayā
36. To Rama, who had spoken these words, the son of the wind (anilātmaja) replied, 'O Rama, I bring you good news: Janaki (Sita) has been seen by me.'
विचित्य दक्षिणामाशां सपर्वतवनाकराम् ।
श्रान्ताः काले व्यतीते स्म दृष्टवन्तो महागुहाम् ॥३७॥
37. vicitya dakṣiṇāmāśāṁ saparvatavanākarām ,
śrāntāḥ kāle vyatīte sma dṛṣṭavanto mahāguhām.

37. After thoroughly searching the southern direction, which encompassed mountains, forests, and mines, we became exhausted as time passed, and then we perceived a great cave.
प्रविशामो वयं तां तु बहुयोजनमायताम् ।
अन्धकारां सुविपिनां गहनां कीटसेविताम् ॥३८॥
38. praviśāmo vayaṁ tāṁ tu bahuyojanamāyatām ,
andhakārāṁ suvipināṁ gahanāṁ kīṭasevitām.
38. praviśāmaḥ vayam tām tu bahuyojanam āyatām
andhakārām suvipīnām gahanām kīṭasevitām
38. But we entered that (cave), which was many yojanas (a measure of distance) long, dark, densely forested, impenetrable, and infested by insects.
गत्वा सुमहदध्वानमादित्यस्य प्रभां ततः ।
दृष्टवन्तः स्म तत्रैव भवनं दिव्यमन्तरा ॥३९॥
39. gatvā sumahadadhvānamādityasya prabhāṁ tataḥ ,
dṛṣṭavantaḥ sma tatraiva bhavanaṁ divyamantarā.
39. gatvā sumahat adhvanam ādityasya prabhām tataḥ
dṛṣṭavantaḥ sma tatra eva bhavanam divyam antarā
39. After traversing a very great distance, and then witnessing the sun's brilliance, we saw right there a divine palace situated within that very place.
मयस्य किल दैत्यस्य तदासीद्वेश्म राघव ।
तत्र प्रभावती नाम तपोऽतप्यत तापसी ॥४०॥
40. mayasya kila daityasya tadāsīdveśma rāghava ,
tatra prabhāvatī nāma tapo'tapyata tāpasī.
40. mayasya kila daityasya tadā āsīt veśma rāghava
tatra prabhāvatī nāma tapas atapyata tāpasī
40. O Rāghava, that was indeed the dwelling of the demon Maya. There, a female ascetic (tāpasī) named Prabhāvatī was performing severe spiritual austerities (tapas).
तया दत्तानि भोज्यानि पानानि विविधानि च ।
भुक्त्वा लब्धबलाः सन्तस्तयोक्तेन पथा ततः ॥४१॥
41. tayā dattāni bhojyāni pānāni vividhāni ca ,
bhuktvā labdhabalāḥ santastayoktena pathā tataḥ.
41. tayā dattāni bhojyāni pānāni vividhāni ca bhuktvā
labdha-balāḥ santaḥ tayā uktena pathā tataḥ
41. Various foods and drinks were given by her. Having consumed them and thereby gained strength, we then proceeded by the path she indicated.
निर्याय तस्मादुद्देशात्पश्यामो लवणाम्भसः ।
समीपे सह्यमलयौ दर्दुरं च महागिरिम् ॥४२॥
42. niryāya tasmāduddeśātpaśyāmo lavaṇāmbhasaḥ ,
samīpe sahyamalayau darduraṁ ca mahāgirim.
42. niryāya tasmāt uddeśāt paśyāmaḥ lavaṇāmbhusaḥ
samīpe sahyamalayau darduram ca mahāgirim
42. Having departed from that region, we then saw, near the salty ocean, the Sahya and Malaya mountains, and the great mountain Dardura.
ततो मलयमारुह्य पश्यन्तो वरुणालयम् ।
विषण्णा व्यथिताः खिन्ना निराशा जीविते भृशम् ॥४३॥
43. tato malayamāruhya paśyanto varuṇālayam ,
viṣaṇṇā vyathitāḥ khinnā nirāśā jīvite bhṛśam.
43. tataḥ malayam āruhya paśyantaḥ varuṇālayam
viṣaṇṇāḥ vyathitāḥ khinnāḥ nirāśāḥ jīvite bhṛśam
43. Then, having ascended Mount Malaya and gazing at the ocean (varuṇālaya), we were deeply dejected, distressed, exhausted, and utterly hopeless about our lives.
अनेकशतविस्तीर्णं योजनानां महोदधिम् ।
तिमिनक्रझषावासं चिन्तयन्तः सुदुःखिताः ॥४४॥
44. anekaśatavistīrṇaṁ yojanānāṁ mahodadhim ,
timinakrajhaṣāvāsaṁ cintayantaḥ suduḥkhitāḥ.
44. anekaśatavistīrṇam yojanānām mahāudadhim
timinakrajhaṣāvāsam cintayantaḥ suduḥkhitāḥ
44. Contemplating that great ocean, which stretched for many hundreds of yojanas and served as the dwelling (āvāsa) for whales, crocodiles, and fish, we were deeply saddened.
तत्रानशनसंकल्पं कृत्वासीना वयं तदा ।
ततः कथान्ते गृध्रस्य जटायोरभवत्कथा ॥४५॥
45. tatrānaśanasaṁkalpaṁ kṛtvāsīnā vayaṁ tadā ,
tataḥ kathānte gṛdhrasya jaṭāyorabhavatkathā.
45. tatra anaśanasaṅkalpam kṛtvā āsīnāḥ vayam tadā
tataḥ kathāante gṛdhrasya jaṭāyoḥ abhavat kathā
45. Thereupon, we resolved to undertake a fast unto death (anaśanasaṅkalpa) and sat down. Subsequently, at the conclusion of our discussion, the story of the vulture Jaṭāyu arose.
ततः पर्वतशृङ्गाभं घोररूपं भयावहम् ।
पक्षिणं दृष्टवन्तः स्म वैनतेयमिवापरम् ॥४६॥
46. tataḥ parvataśṛṅgābhaṁ ghorarūpaṁ bhayāvaham ,
pakṣiṇaṁ dṛṣṭavantaḥ sma vainateyamivāparam.

46. Then we beheld a bird, which resembled a mountain peak, had a dreadful appearance, and was terrifying, like another Garuḍa (Vainateya).
सोऽस्मानतर्कयद्भोक्तुमथाभ्येत्य वचोऽब्रवीत् ।
भोः क एष मम भ्रातुर्जटायोः कुरुते कथाम् ॥४७॥
47. so'smānatarkayadbhoktumathābhyetya vaco'bravīt ,
bhoḥ ka eṣa mama bhrāturjaṭāyoḥ kurute kathām.
47. saḥ asmān atarkayat bhoktum atha abhyetya vacaḥ abravīt
bhoḥ kaḥ eṣaḥ mama bhrātuḥ jaṭāyoḥ kurute kathām
47. He thought of eating us, and then, having approached, he spoke these words: 'Oh! Who is this one telling the story of my brother, Jatayu?'
संपातिर्नाम तस्याहं ज्येष्ठो भ्राता खगाधिपः ।
अन्योन्यस्पर्धयारूढावावामादित्यसंसदम् ॥४८॥
48. saṁpātirnāma tasyāhaṁ jyeṣṭho bhrātā khagādhipaḥ ,
anyonyaspardhayārūḍhāvāvāmādityasaṁsadam.
48. sampātiḥ nāma tasya aham jyeṣṭhaḥ bhrātā khagādhipaḥ
anyonyaspardhayā ārūḍhau āvām ādityasaṃsadam
48. My name is Sampati. I am his elder brother, the lord of birds. Out of mutual rivalry, we two ascended to the sun's assembly.
ततो दग्धाविमौ पक्षौ न दग्धौ तु जटायुषः ।
तदा मे चिरदृष्टः स भ्राता गृध्रपतिः प्रियः ।
निर्दग्धपक्षः पतितो ह्यहमस्मिन्महागिरौ ॥४९॥
49. tato dagdhāvimau pakṣau na dagdhau tu jaṭāyuṣaḥ ,
tadā me ciradṛṣṭaḥ sa bhrātā gṛdhrapatiḥ priyaḥ ,
nirdagdhapakṣaḥ patito hyahamasminmahāgirau.
49. tataḥ dagdhau imau pakṣau na dagdhau
tu jaṭāyuṣaḥ tadā me ciradṛṣṭaḥ saḥ
bhrātā gṛdhrapatiḥ priyaḥ nirdagdha-pakṣaḥ
patitaḥ hi aham asmin mahāgirau
49. Then these two wings of mine were burnt, but Jatayu's were not. At that time, my dear brother, the lord of vultures, was well-known (to me). Indeed, with my wings completely burnt, I fell upon this great mountain.
तस्यैवं वदतोऽस्माभिर्हतो भ्राता निवेदितः ।
व्यसनं भवतश्चेदं संक्षेपाद्वै निवेदितम् ॥५०॥
50. tasyaivaṁ vadato'smābhirhato bhrātā niveditaḥ ,
vyasanaṁ bhavataścedaṁ saṁkṣepādvai niveditam.
50. tasya evam vadataḥ asmābhiḥ hataḥ bhrātā niveditaḥ
vyasanam bhavataḥ ca idam saṃkṣepāt vai niveditam
50. As he was speaking thus, we informed him that his brother had been slain. And this calamity of yours has indeed been reported briefly.
स संपातिस्तदा राजञ्श्रुत्वा सुमहदप्रियम् ।
विषण्णचेताः पप्रच्छ पुनरस्मानरिंदम ॥५१॥
51. sa saṁpātistadā rājañśrutvā sumahadapriyam ,
viṣaṇṇacetāḥ papraccha punarasmānariṁdama.
51. saḥ saṃpātiḥ tadā rājan śrutvā sumahat apriyam
viṣaṇṇacetāḥ papraccha punaḥ asmān ariṃdama
51. Then, O king, O subduer of enemies, Sampati, having heard that very great unpleasant news, with a dejected mind, again questioned us.
कः स रामः कथं सीता जटायुश्च कथं हतः ।
इच्छामि सर्वमेवैतच्छ्रोतुं प्लवगसत्तमाः ॥५२॥
52. kaḥ sa rāmaḥ kathaṁ sītā jaṭāyuśca kathaṁ hataḥ ,
icchāmi sarvamevaitacchrotuṁ plavagasattamāḥ.
52. kaḥ saḥ rāmaḥ katham sītā jaṭāyuḥ ca katham hataḥ
icchāmi sarvam eva etat śrotum plavagasattamāḥ
52. Who is that Rama? What about Sita? And how was Jatayu killed? O best among the monkeys, I indeed wish to hear all this.
तस्याहं सर्वमेवैतं भवतो व्यसनागमम् ।
प्रायोपवेशने चैव हेतुं विस्तरतोऽब्रुवम् ॥५३॥
53. tasyāhaṁ sarvamevaitaṁ bhavato vyasanāgamam ,
prāyopaveśane caiva hetuṁ vistarato'bruvam.
53. tasya aham sarvam eva etam bhavataḥ vyasanāgamam
prāyopaveśane ca eva hetum vistarataḥ abruvam
53. I narrated to him (Sampati) in detail all about this misfortune that had befallen us, and also the reason for our fast unto death (prāyopaveśana).
सोऽस्मानुत्थापयामास वाक्येनानेन पक्षिराट् ।
रावणो विदितो मह्यं लङ्का चास्य महापुरी ॥५४॥
54. so'smānutthāpayāmāsa vākyenānena pakṣirāṭ ,
rāvaṇo vidito mahyaṁ laṅkā cāsya mahāpurī.
54. saḥ asmān utthāpayāmāsa vākyena anena pakṣirāṭ
rāvaṇaḥ viditaḥ mahyam laṅkā ca asya mahāpurī
54. That king of birds (Sampati) roused us with this statement: 'Ravana is known to me, and Lanka is his great city.'
दृष्टा पारे समुद्रस्य त्रिकूटगिरिकन्दरे ।
भवित्री तत्र वैदेही न मेऽस्त्यत्र विचारणा ॥५५॥
55. dṛṣṭā pāre samudrasya trikūṭagirikandare ,
bhavitrī tatra vaidehī na me'styatra vicāraṇā.
55. dṛṣṭā pāre samudrasya trikūṭagirikandare
bhavitrī tatra vaidehī na me asti atra vicāraṇā
55. Sita (vaidehī) will be seen across the ocean, in a cave of the Trikūṭa mountain. I have no doubt about this matter.
इति तस्य वचः श्रुत्वा वयमुत्थाय सत्वराः ।
सागरप्लवने मन्त्रं मन्त्रयामः परंतप ॥५६॥
56. iti tasya vacaḥ śrutvā vayamutthāya satvarāḥ ,
sāgaraplavane mantraṁ mantrayāmaḥ paraṁtapa.
56. iti tasya vacaḥ śrutvā vayam utthāya satvarāḥ
sāgaraplavane mantram mantrayāmaḥ paraṃtapa
56. Having heard his words, we quickly arose and deliberated on a plan for crossing the ocean, O tormentor of foes.
नाध्यवस्यद्यदा कश्चित्सागरस्य विलङ्घने ।
ततः पितरमाविश्य पुप्लुवेऽहं महार्णवम् ।
शतयोजनविस्तीर्णं निहत्य जलराक्षसीम् ॥५७॥
57. nādhyavasyadyadā kaścitsāgarasya vilaṅghane ,
tataḥ pitaramāviśya pupluve'haṁ mahārṇavam ,
śatayojanavistīrṇaṁ nihatya jalarākṣasīm.
57. na adhyavasyat yadā kaścit sāgarasya
vilaṅghane tataḥ pitaram āviśya
pupluve aham mahārṇavam
śatayojanavistīrṇam nihatya jalarākṣasīm
57. When no one dared to cross the ocean, then I, invoking my father (Vāyu), leapt across the great ocean, which was a hundred yojanas wide, after having struck down the water ogress.
तत्र सीता मया दृष्टा रावणान्तःपुरे सती ।
उपवासतपःशीला भर्तृदर्शनलालसा ।
जटिला मलदिग्धाङ्गी कृशा दीना तपस्विनी ॥५८॥
58. tatra sītā mayā dṛṣṭā rāvaṇāntaḥpure satī ,
upavāsatapaḥśīlā bhartṛdarśanalālasā ,
jaṭilā maladigdhāṅgī kṛśā dīnā tapasvinī.
58. tatra sītā mayā dṛṣṭā rāvaṇāntaḥpure satī upavāsatapaḥśīlā
bhartṛdarśanalālasā jaṭilā maladigdhāṅgī kṛśā dīnā tapasvinī
58. There, I saw Sita, a chaste wife (satī), in Ravana's inner palace. She was engaged in fasting and austerity (tapas), longing for the sight of her husband. She had matted hair, her limbs were smeared with dirt, and she appeared thin, distressed, and ascetic (tapasvinī).
निमित्तैस्तामहं सीतामुपलभ्य पृथग्विधैः ।
उपसृत्याब्रुवं चार्यामभिगम्य रहोगताम् ॥५९॥
59. nimittaistāmahaṁ sītāmupalabhya pṛthagvidhaiḥ ,
upasṛtyābruvaṁ cāryāmabhigamya rahogatām.
59. nimittaiḥ tām aham sītām upalabhya pṛthagvidhaiḥ
upasṛtya abruvam cāryām abhigamya rahogatām
59. Having identified that lady Sita by various signs, I approached her while she was in seclusion and spoke to the venerable lady.
सीते रामस्य दूतोऽहं वानरो मारुतात्मजः ।
त्वद्दर्शनमभिप्रेप्सुरिह प्राप्तो विहायसा ॥६०॥
60. sīte rāmasya dūto'haṁ vānaro mārutātmajaḥ ,
tvaddarśanamabhiprepsuriha prāpto vihāyasā.
60. sīte rāmasya dūtaḥ aham vānaraḥ mārutātmajaḥ
tvaddarśanam abhiprepsuḥ iha prāptaḥ vihāyasā
60. O Sita, I am Rama's messenger, a monkey, the son of Maruta. Desiring to see you, I have arrived here through the sky.
राजपुत्रौ कुशलिनौ भ्रातरौ रामलक्ष्मणौ ।
सर्वशाखामृगेन्द्रेण सुग्रीवेणाभिपालितौ ॥६१॥
61. rājaputrau kuśalinau bhrātarau rāmalakṣmaṇau ,
sarvaśākhāmṛgendreṇa sugrīveṇābhipālitau.

sarvaśākhāmṛgendreṇa sugrīveṇa abhipālitau
61. The two princes, brothers Rama and Lakshmana, are well, being protected by Sugriva, the lord of all monkeys.
कुशलं त्वाब्रवीद्रामः सीते सौमित्रिणा सह ।
सखिभावाच्च सुग्रीवः कुशलं त्वानुपृच्छति ॥६२॥
62. kuśalaṁ tvābravīdrāmaḥ sīte saumitriṇā saha ,
sakhibhāvācca sugrīvaḥ kuśalaṁ tvānupṛcchati.
62. kuśalam tvā abravīt rāmaḥ sīte saumitriṇā saha
sakhibhāvāt ca sugrīvaḥ kuśalam tvā anupṛcchati
62. O Sita, Rama, along with Lakshmana, spoke of your well-being. And Sugriva, out of friendship, also inquires about your well-being.
क्षिप्रमेष्यति ते भर्ता सर्वशाखामृगैः सह ।
प्रत्ययं कुरु मे देवि वानरोऽस्मि न राक्षसः ॥६३॥
63. kṣiprameṣyati te bhartā sarvaśākhāmṛgaiḥ saha ,
pratyayaṁ kuru me devi vānaro'smi na rākṣasaḥ.
63. kṣipram eṣyati te bhartā sarvaśākhāmṛgaiḥ saha
pratyayam kuru me devi vānaraḥ asmi na rākṣasaḥ
63. Your husband will arrive quickly, accompanied by all the monkeys. O Goddess, please place your trust in me; I am a monkey, not a demon.
मुहूर्तमिव च ध्यात्वा सीता मां प्रत्युवाच ह ।
अवैमि त्वां हनूमन्तमविन्ध्यवचनादहम् ॥६४॥
64. muhūrtamiva ca dhyātvā sītā māṁ pratyuvāca ha ,
avaimi tvāṁ hanūmantamavindhyavacanādaham.
64. muhūrtam iva ca dhyātvā sītā mām pratyuvāca ha
avaimi tvām hanūmantam avindhyavacanāt aham
64. And having meditated (dhyāna) for a moment, Sita replied to me, 'I recognize you as Hanuman from Avindhya's words.'
अविन्ध्यो हि महाबाहो राक्षसो वृद्धसंमतः ।
कथितस्तेन सुग्रीवस्त्वद्विधैः सचिवैर्वृतः ॥६५॥
65. avindhyo hi mahābāho rākṣaso vṛddhasaṁmataḥ ,
kathitastena sugrīvastvadvidhaiḥ sacivairvṛtaḥ.
65. avindhyaḥ hi mahābāho rākṣasaḥ vṛddhasaṃmataḥ |
kathitaḥ tena sugrīvaḥ tvadvidhaiḥ sacivaiḥ vṛtaḥ
65. O mighty-armed one (mahābāho), Avindhya is indeed a demon respected by the elders. He mentioned Sugriva, saying he is accompanied by ministers like you.
गम्यतामिति चोक्त्वा मां सीता प्रादादिमं मणिम् ।
धारिता येन वैदेही कालमेतमनिन्दिता ॥६६॥
66. gamyatāmiti coktvā māṁ sītā prādādimaṁ maṇim ,
dhāritā yena vaidehī kālametamaninditā.
66. gamyatām iti ca uktvā mām sītā prādāt imam
maṇim | dhāritā yena vaidehī kālam etam aninditā
66. And having said, 'You may go now!', Sita gave me this jewel. The blameless Vaidehi (Sita) has worn it during this entire period.
प्रत्ययार्थं कथां चेमां कथयामास जानकी ।
क्षिप्तामिषीकां काकस्य चित्रकूटे महागिरौ ।
भवता पुरुषव्याघ्र प्रत्यभिज्ञानकारणात् ॥६७॥
67. pratyayārthaṁ kathāṁ cemāṁ kathayāmāsa jānakī ,
kṣiptāmiṣīkāṁ kākasya citrakūṭe mahāgirau ,
bhavatā puruṣavyāghra pratyabhijñānakāraṇāt.
67. pratyayārtham kathām ca imām
kathayāmāsa jānakī kṣiptām iṣīkām
kākasya citrakūṭe mahāgirau bhavatā
puruṣavyāghra pratyabhijñānakāraṇāt
67. Janakī narrated this story for your conviction (pratyaya), about the reed you cast at the crow on the great Citrakūṭa mountain, as a means of recognition (pratyabhijñāna).
श्रावयित्वा तदात्मानं ततो दग्ध्वा च तां पुरीम् ।
संप्राप्त इति तं रामः प्रियवादिनमर्चयत् ॥६८॥
68. śrāvayitvā tadātmānaṁ tato dagdhvā ca tāṁ purīm ,
saṁprāpta iti taṁ rāmaḥ priyavādinamarcayat.
68. śrāvayitvā tadā ātmānam tataḥ dagdhvā ca tām purīm
samprāptaḥ iti tam rāmaḥ priyavādinam arcayat
68. Then, having made himself known and having burnt that city, (Hanuman said) 'I have returned.' Rāma honored that speaker of pleasant words (Hanuman).
