जनमेजय उवाच ।
दुर्योधनं मोचयित्वा पाण्डुपुत्रा महाबलाः ।
किमकार्षुर्वने तस्मिंस्तन्ममाख्यातुमर्हसि ॥१॥
1. janamejaya uvāca ,
duryodhanaṁ mocayitvā pāṇḍuputrā mahābalāḥ ,
kimakārṣurvane tasmiṁstanmamākhyātumarhasi.

mahābalāḥ kim akārṣuḥ vane tasmin tat mama ākhyātum arhasi
1. Janamejaya said: 'After releasing Duryodhana, what did the mighty sons of Pāṇḍu do in that forest? You should narrate that to me.'
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
ततः शयानं कौन्तेयं रात्रौ द्वैतवने मृगाः ।
स्वप्नान्ते दर्शयामासुर्बाष्पकण्ठा युधिष्ठिरम् ॥२॥
2. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
tataḥ śayānaṁ kaunteyaṁ rātrau dvaitavane mṛgāḥ ,
svapnānte darśayāmāsurbāṣpakaṇṭhā yudhiṣṭhiram.

mṛgāḥ svapnānte darśayāmāsuḥ bāṣpakaṇṭhāḥ yudhiṣṭhiram
2. Vaiśampāyana said: Then, at the end of a dream, the deer in the Dvaita forest, with choked voices, appeared before Yudhiṣṭhira, the son of Kuntī, who was sleeping at night.
तानब्रवीत्स राजेन्द्रो वेपमानान्कृताञ्जलीन् ।
ब्रूत यद्वक्तुकामाः स्थ के भवन्तः किमिष्यते ॥३॥
3. tānabravītsa rājendro vepamānānkṛtāñjalīn ,
brūta yadvaktukāmāḥ stha ke bhavantaḥ kimiṣyate.
3. tān abravīt saḥ rājendraḥ vepamānān kṛtāñjalīn
brūta yat vaktukāmāḥ stha ke bhavantaḥ kim iṣyate
3. That lord of kings addressed them, who were trembling and had hands joined in supplication. "Tell me what you wish to say. Who are you, and what is it that you desire?"
एवमुक्ताः पाण्डवेन कौन्तेयेन यशस्विना ।
प्रत्यब्रुवन्मृगास्तत्र हतशेषा युधिष्ठिरम् ॥४॥
4. evamuktāḥ pāṇḍavena kaunteyena yaśasvinā ,
pratyabruvanmṛgāstatra hataśeṣā yudhiṣṭhiram.
4. evam uktāḥ pāṇḍavena kaunteyena yaśasvinā
pratyabruvan mṛgāḥ tatra hataśeṣāḥ yudhiṣṭhiram
4. Having been thus addressed by the glorious Yudhiṣṭhira, the son of Kuntī and Pāṇḍu, the surviving deer there replied to him.
वयं मृगा द्वैतवने हतशिष्टाः स्म भारत ।
नोत्सीदेम महाराज क्रियतां वासपर्ययः ॥५॥
5. vayaṁ mṛgā dvaitavane hataśiṣṭāḥ sma bhārata ,
notsīdema mahārāja kriyatāṁ vāsaparyayaḥ.
5. vayam mṛgāḥ dvaitavane hataśiṣṭāḥ sma bhārata
na utsīdemahi mahārāja kriyatām vāsaparyayaḥ
5. O descendant of Bhārata, O great king, we are the surviving deer in the Dvaita forest. May we not be destroyed! Please arrange for a change of residence.
भवन्तो भ्रातरः शूराः सर्व एवास्त्रकोविदाः ।
कुलान्यल्पावशिष्टानि कृतवन्तो वनौकसाम् ॥६॥
6. bhavanto bhrātaraḥ śūrāḥ sarva evāstrakovidāḥ ,
kulānyalpāvaśiṣṭāni kṛtavanto vanaukasām.
6. bhavantaḥ bhrātaraḥ śūrāḥ sarve eva astrakovidāḥ
kulāni alpāvaśiṣṭāni kṛtavantaḥ vanaukasām
6. You, brave brothers, all indeed skilled in weapons, have left the families of the forest-dwellers with only a few remaining members.
बीजभूता वयं केचिदवशिष्टा महामते ।
विवर्धेमहि राजेन्द्र प्रसादात्ते युधिष्ठिर ॥७॥
7. bījabhūtā vayaṁ kecidavaśiṣṭā mahāmate ,
vivardhemahi rājendra prasādātte yudhiṣṭhira.
7. bījabhūtā vayam kecit avaśiṣṭā mahāmate
vivardhemahi rājendra prasādāt te yudhiṣṭhira
7. O great-minded one, O King Yudhiṣṭhira, we are a few remaining, the very seed. May we prosper through your grace.
तान्वेपमानान्वित्रस्तान्बीजमात्रावशेषितान् ।
मृगान्दृष्ट्वा सुदुःखार्तो धर्मराजो युधिष्ठिरः ॥८॥
8. tānvepamānānvitrastānbījamātrāvaśeṣitān ,
mṛgāndṛṣṭvā suduḥkhārto dharmarājo yudhiṣṭhiraḥ.
8. tān vepamānān vitrastān bījamātrāvaśeṣitān mṛgān
dṛṣṭvā sudhukhārtaḥ dharmarājaḥ yudhiṣṭhiraḥ
8. Yudhiṣṭhira, the king of natural law (dharma), having seen those trembling, terrified animals (mṛgān) who were reduced to a mere seed, became greatly distressed.
तांस्तथेत्यब्रवीद्राजा सर्वभूतहिते रतः ।
तथ्यं भवन्तो ब्रुवते करिष्यामि च तत्तथा ॥९॥
9. tāṁstathetyabravīdrājā sarvabhūtahite rataḥ ,
tathyaṁ bhavanto bruvate kariṣyāmi ca tattathā.
9. tān tathā iti abravīt rājā sarvabhūtahite rataḥ
tathyam bhavantaḥ bruvate kariṣyāmi ca tat tathā
9. The king, who was dedicated to the welfare of all beings, said to them, 'So be it.' He continued, 'You speak truthfully, and I will carry out that promise accordingly.'
इत्येवं प्रतिबुद्धः स रात्र्यन्ते राजसत्तमः ।
अब्रवीत्सहितान्भ्रातॄन्दयापन्नो मृगान्प्रति ॥१०॥
10. ityevaṁ pratibuddhaḥ sa rātryante rājasattamaḥ ,
abravītsahitānbhrātṝndayāpanno mṛgānprati.
10. iti evam pratibuddhaḥ sa rātri ante rājasattamaḥ
abravīt sahitān bhrātṝn dayāpannaḥ mṛgān prati
10. Having thus awakened at the end of the night, that best among kings, filled with compassion (dayā), spoke to his brothers concerning the deer.
उक्तो रात्रौ मृगैरस्मि स्वप्नान्ते हतशेषितैः ।
तनुभूताः स्म भद्रं ते दया नः क्रियतामिति ॥११॥
11. ukto rātrau mṛgairasmi svapnānte hataśeṣitaiḥ ,
tanubhūtāḥ sma bhadraṁ te dayā naḥ kriyatāmiti.
11. uktaḥ rātrau mṛgaiḥ asmi svapna ante hataśeṣitaiḥ
tanubhūtāḥ sma bhadram te dayā naḥ kriyatām iti
11. At the end of a dream, I was told at night by the deer who survived the slaughter: 'We are few. May good fortune be yours; please show compassion (dayā) to us.'
ते सत्यमाहुः कर्तव्या दयास्माभिर्वनौकसाम् ।
साष्टमासं हि नो वर्षं यदेनानुपयुञ्ज्महे ॥१२॥
12. te satyamāhuḥ kartavyā dayāsmābhirvanaukasām ,
sāṣṭamāsaṁ hi no varṣaṁ yadenānupayuñjmahe.
12. te satyam āhuḥ kartavyā dayā asmābhiḥ vanaukasām
sāṣṭamāsam hi naḥ varṣam yat enān upayujmahe
12. Their words are true. Compassion (dayā) should be shown by us to these forest-dwellers, because, indeed, we utilize them for our sustenance for eight months of the year.
पुनर्बहुमृगं रम्यं काम्यकं काननोत्तमम् ।
मरुभूमेः शिरः ख्यातं तृणबिन्दुसरः प्रति ।
तत्रेमा वसतीः शिष्टा विहरन्तो रमेमहि ॥१३॥
13. punarbahumṛgaṁ ramyaṁ kāmyakaṁ kānanottamam ,
marubhūmeḥ śiraḥ khyātaṁ tṛṇabindusaraḥ prati ,
tatremā vasatīḥ śiṣṭā viharanto ramemahi.
13. punar bahumṛgam ramyam kāmyakam
kānanottamam marubhūmeḥ śiraḥ khyātam
tṛṇabindusaraḥ prati tatra imāḥ
vasatīḥ śiṣṭāḥ viharantaḥ ramemahi
13. Therefore, let us once again delight, while wandering and staying in these remaining habitations within the delightful Kāmyaka forest - the best of forests, abundant with many deer, and renowned as the crown (śiraḥ) of the desert land, situated near Tṛṇabindu Lake.
ततस्ते पाण्डवाः शीघ्रं प्रययुर्धर्मकोविदाः ।
ब्राह्मणैः सहिता राजन्ये च तत्र सहोषिताः ।
इन्द्रसेनादिभिश्चैव प्रेष्यैरनुगतास्तदा ॥१४॥
14. tataste pāṇḍavāḥ śīghraṁ prayayurdharmakovidāḥ ,
brāhmaṇaiḥ sahitā rājanye ca tatra sahoṣitāḥ ,
indrasenādibhiścaiva preṣyairanugatāstadā.
14. tataḥ te pāṇḍavāḥ śīghram prayayuḥ
dharmakovidāḥ brāhmaṇaiḥ sahitāḥ
rājan ye ca tatra sahoṣitāḥ indrasenādibhiḥ
ca eva preṣyaiḥ anugatāḥ tadā
14. Then, O King, those Pāṇḍavas, who were knowledgeable in natural law (dharma), quickly departed. They were accompanied by the Brahmins who had resided with them there, and also by Indrasena and other servants.
ते यात्वानुसृतैर्मार्गैः स्वन्नैः शुचिजलान्वितैः ।
ददृशुः काम्यकं पुण्यमाश्रमं तापसायुतम् ॥१५॥
15. te yātvānusṛtairmārgaiḥ svannaiḥ śucijalānvitaiḥ ,
dadṛśuḥ kāmyakaṁ puṇyamāśramaṁ tāpasāyutam.
15. te yātvānusṛtaiḥ mārgaiḥ svannaiḥ śucijalānvitaiḥ
dadṛśuḥ kāmyakam puṇyam āśramam tāpasāyutam
15. They traveled along well-trodden paths, which were provisioned with good food and endowed with pure water. There, they saw the sacred Kāmyaka hermitage, which was filled with ascetics.
विविशुस्ते स्म कौरव्या वृता विप्रर्षभैस्तदा ।
तद्वनं भरतश्रेष्ठाः स्वर्गं सुकृतिनो यथा ॥१६॥
16. viviśuste sma kauravyā vṛtā viprarṣabhaistadā ,
tadvanaṁ bharataśreṣṭhāḥ svargaṁ sukṛtino yathā.
16. viviśuḥ te sma kauravyāḥ vṛtāḥ vipraṛṣabhaiḥ tadā
tat vanam bharataśreṣṭhāḥ svargam sukṛtinaḥ yathā
16. Then, O best of Bhāratas, those Kauravas (the Pāṇḍavas), accompanied by excellent Brahmins, entered that forest, just as virtuous individuals enter heaven.
