नारद उवाच ।
नासौ वृथाग्निना दग्धो यथा तत्र श्रुतं मया ।
वैचित्रवीर्यो नृपतिस्तत्ते वक्ष्यामि भारत ॥१॥
1. nārada uvāca ,
nāsau vṛthāgninā dagdho yathā tatra śrutaṁ mayā ,
vaicitravīryo nṛpatistatte vakṣyāmi bhārata.

1. Nārada said: "King Vaicitravīrya was not uselessly consumed by fire, as I heard about that matter. O Bhārata, I will tell you about it."
वनं प्रविशता तेन वायुभक्षेण धीमता ।
अग्नयः कारयित्वेष्टिमुत्सृष्टा इति नः श्रुतम् ॥२॥
2. vanaṁ praviśatā tena vāyubhakṣeṇa dhīmatā ,
agnayaḥ kārayitveṣṭimutsṛṣṭā iti naḥ śrutam.
2. vanaṃ praviśatā tena vāyubhakṣeṇa dhīmatā |
agnayaḥ kārayitvā iṣṭim utsṛṣṭāḥ iti naḥ śrutam
2. naḥ śrutam iti tena dhīmatā vāyubhakṣeṇa vanaṃ
praviśatā iṣṭim kārayitvā agnayaḥ utsṛṣṭāḥ
2. We have heard that by that intelligent one, who subsisted on air and entered the forest, the (sacred) fires were abandoned after he had a Vedic ritual (iṣṭi) performed.
याजकास्तु ततस्तस्य तानग्नीन्निर्जने वने ।
समुत्सृज्य यथाकामं जग्मुर्भरतसत्तम ॥३॥
3. yājakāstu tatastasya tānagnīnnirjane vane ,
samutsṛjya yathākāmaṁ jagmurbharatasattama.
3. yājakāḥ tu tataḥ tasya tān agnīn nirjane vane
| samutsṛjya yathākāmaṃ jagmuḥ bharatasattama
3. bharatasattama tu tataḥ tasya yājakāḥ tān
agnīn nirjane vane yathākāmaṃ samutsṛjya jagmuḥ
3. But then, O best of Bhāratas, his priests, having completely abandoned those fires in the desolate forest as they wished, departed.
स विवृद्धस्तदा वह्निर्वने तस्मिन्नभूत्किल ।
तेन तद्वनमादीप्तमिति मे तापसाब्रुवन् ॥४॥
4. sa vivṛddhastadā vahnirvane tasminnabhūtkila ,
tena tadvanamādīptamiti me tāpasābruvan.
4. sa vivṛddhaḥ tadā vahniḥ vane tasmin abhūt kila
| tena tat vanam ādīptam iti me tāpasāḥ abruvan
4. kila tadā sa vahniḥ tasmin vane vivṛddhaḥ abhūt
tāpasāḥ me iti abruvan tena tat vanam ādīptam
4. Indeed, that (abandoned) fire then greatly intensified in that forest. The ascetics told me that the entire forest was ignited by it.
स राजा जाह्नवीकच्छे यथा ते कथितं मया ।
तेनाग्निना समायुक्तः स्वेनैव भरतर्षभ ॥५॥
5. sa rājā jāhnavīkacche yathā te kathitaṁ mayā ,
tenāgninā samāyuktaḥ svenaiva bharatarṣabha.
5. sa rājā jāhnavīkacche yathā te kathitam mayā
tena agninā samāyuktaḥ svena eva bharatarṣabha
5. bharatarṣabha saḥ rājā jāhnavīkacche svena eva
tena agninā samāyuktaḥ yathā mayā te kathitam
5. O best of Bharatas, that king, on the bank of the Gaṅgā, was united with his own fire, just as I told you.
एवमावेदयामासुर्मुनयस्ते ममानघ ।
ये ते भागीरथीतीरे मया दृष्टा युधिष्ठिर ॥६॥
6. evamāvedayāmāsurmunayaste mamānagha ,
ye te bhāgīrathītīre mayā dṛṣṭā yudhiṣṭhira.
6. evam āvedayāmāsuḥ munayaḥ te mama anagha ye
te bhāgīrathītīre mayā dṛṣṭāḥ yudhiṣṭhira
6. anagha yudhiṣṭhira ye te munayaḥ mayā
bhāgīrathītīre dṛṣṭāḥ te evam mama āvedayāmāsuḥ
6. O sinless one, O Yudhiṣṭhira, those sages whom I saw on the bank of the Bhagirathi (Gaṅgā) conveyed this to me.
एवं स्वेनाग्निना राजा समायुक्तो महीपते ।
मा शोचिथास्त्वं नृपतिं गतः स परमां गतिम् ॥७॥
7. evaṁ svenāgninā rājā samāyukto mahīpate ,
mā śocithāstvaṁ nṛpatiṁ gataḥ sa paramāṁ gatim.
7. evam svena agninā rājā samāyuktaḥ mahīpate mā
śocithāḥ tvam nṛpatim gataḥ saḥ paramām gatim
7. mahīpate rājā evam svena agninā samāyuktaḥ tvam
mā śocithāḥ saḥ nṛpatim paramām gatim gataḥ
7. O king, the monarch was thus united with his own fire. Do not grieve, for he has attained the supreme state.
गुरुशुश्रूषया चैव जननी तव पाण्डव ।
प्राप्ता सुमहतीं सिद्धिमिति मे नात्र संशयः ॥८॥
8. guruśuśrūṣayā caiva jananī tava pāṇḍava ,
prāptā sumahatīṁ siddhimiti me nātra saṁśayaḥ.
8. guruśuśrūṣayā ca eva jananī tava pāṇḍava prāptā
sumahatīm siddhim iti me na atra saṃśayaḥ
8. pāṇḍava tava jananī guruśuśrūṣayā ca eva
sumahatīm siddhim prāptā iti me atra na saṃśayaḥ
8. O Pāṇḍava, your mother attained very great spiritual perfection (siddhi) through devoted service (śuśrūṣā) to her preceptor (guru). Of this, there is no doubt in my mind.
कर्तुमर्हसि कौरव्य तेषां त्वमुदकक्रियाम् ।
भ्रातृभिः सहितः सर्वैरेतदत्र विधीयताम् ॥९॥
9. kartumarhasi kauravya teṣāṁ tvamudakakriyām ,
bhrātṛbhiḥ sahitaḥ sarvairetadatra vidhīyatām.
9. kartum arhasi kauravya teṣām tvam udakakriyām
bhrātṛbhiḥ sahitaḥ sarvaiḥ etat atra vidhīyatām
9. O descendant of Kuru, you ought to perform the water ritual for them. Accompanied by all your brothers, let this be done here.
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
ततः स पृथिवीपालः पाण्डवानां धुरंधरः ।
निर्ययौ सह सोदर्यैः सदारो भरतर्षभ ॥१०॥
10. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
tataḥ sa pṛthivīpālaḥ pāṇḍavānāṁ dhuraṁdharaḥ ,
niryayau saha sodaryaiḥ sadāro bharatarṣabha.
10. vaiśaṃpāyana uvāca tataḥ sa pṛthivīpālaḥ pāṇḍavānām
dhurandharaḥ niryayau saha sodaryaiḥ sadāraḥ bharatarṣabha
10. Vaiśampāyana said: Then that protector of the earth, the chief of the Pāṇḍavas, departed with his uterine brothers and wives, O best among the Bhāratas.
पौरजानपदाश्चैव राजभक्तिपुरस्कृताः ।
गङ्गां प्रजग्मुरभितो वाससैकेन संवृताः ॥११॥
11. paurajānapadāścaiva rājabhaktipuraskṛtāḥ ,
gaṅgāṁ prajagmurabhito vāsasaikena saṁvṛtāḥ.
11. paurajānapadāḥ ca eva rājabhaktipuraskṛtāḥ
gaṅgām prajagmuḥ abhitaḥ vāsasā ekena saṃvṛtāḥ
11. The citizens and country folk, driven by their devotion to the king, went to the Gaṅgā, covered only with a single garment.
ततोऽवगाह्य सलिलं सर्वे ते कुरुपुंगवाः ।
युयुत्सुमग्रतः कृत्वा ददुस्तोयं महात्मने ॥१२॥
12. tato'vagāhya salilaṁ sarve te kurupuṁgavāḥ ,
yuyutsumagrataḥ kṛtvā dadustoyaṁ mahātmane.
12. tataḥ avagāhya salilam sarve te kurupuṅgavāḥ
yuyutsum agrataḥ kṛtvā daduḥ toyam mahātmane
12. Then all those best of the Kurus, having immersed themselves in the water, and placing Yuyutsu at the front, offered water to the great souls (mahātman).
गान्धार्याश्च पृथायाश्च विधिवन्नामगोत्रतः ।
शौचं निवर्तयन्तस्ते तत्रोषुर्नगराद्बहिः ॥१३॥
13. gāndhāryāśca pṛthāyāśca vidhivannāmagotrataḥ ,
śaucaṁ nivartayantaste tatroṣurnagarādbahiḥ.
13. gāndhāryāḥ ca pṛthāyāḥ ca vidhivat nāmagotrataḥ
śaucam nivartayantaḥ te tatra ūṣuḥ nagarāt bahiḥ
13. They stayed outside the city, performing the purification rites for Gandhari and Pritha according to sacred law, specifying their names and lineages.
प्रेषयामास स नरान्विधिज्ञानाप्तकारिणः ।
गङ्गाद्वारं कुरुश्रेष्ठो यत्र दग्धोऽभवन्नृपः ॥१४॥
14. preṣayāmāsa sa narānvidhijñānāptakāriṇaḥ ,
gaṅgādvāraṁ kuruśreṣṭho yatra dagdho'bhavannṛpaḥ.
14. preṣayāmāsa sa narān vidhijñānāptakāriṇaḥ
gaṅgādvāram kuruśreṣṭhaḥ yatra dagdhaḥ abhavat nṛpaḥ
14. The best of the Kurus (Yudhishthira) sent trustworthy men, knowledgeable in the sacred rites, to Gangadvāra, where the king had been cremated.
तत्रैव तेषां कुल्यानि गङ्गाद्वारेऽन्वशात्तदा ।
कर्तव्यानीति पुरुषान्दत्तदेयान्महीपतिः ॥१५॥
15. tatraiva teṣāṁ kulyāni gaṅgādvāre'nvaśāttadā ,
kartavyānīti puruṣāndattadeyānmahīpatiḥ.
15. tatra eva teṣām kulyāni gaṅgādvāre anu aśāt tadā
kartavyāni iti puruṣān dattadeyān mahīpatiḥ
15. Then, the king (Yudhishthira) instructed the paid men at Gangadvāra itself that the ancestral rites for them should be performed there.
द्वादशेऽहनि तेभ्यः स कृतशौचो नराधिपः ।
ददौ श्राद्धानि विधिवद्दक्षिणावन्ति पाण्डवः ॥१६॥
16. dvādaśe'hani tebhyaḥ sa kṛtaśauco narādhipaḥ ,
dadau śrāddhāni vidhivaddakṣiṇāvanti pāṇḍavaḥ.
16. dvādaśe ahani tebhyaḥ sa kṛtaśaucaḥ narādhipaḥ
dadau śrāddhāni vidhivat dakṣiṇāvanti pāṇḍavaḥ
16. On the twelfth day, the Pandava king (Yudhishthira), having completed his purification, performed the ancestral rites for them, according to sacred law and accompanied by ritual fees.
धृतराष्ट्रं समुद्दिश्य ददौ स पृथिवीपतिः ।
सुवर्णं रजतं गाश्च शय्याश्च सुमहाधनाः ॥१७॥
17. dhṛtarāṣṭraṁ samuddiśya dadau sa pṛthivīpatiḥ ,
suvarṇaṁ rajataṁ gāśca śayyāśca sumahādhanāḥ.
17. dhṛtarāṣṭram samudiśya dadau sa pṛthivīpatiḥ
suvarṇam rajatam gāḥ ca śayyāḥ ca sumahādhanāḥ
17. saḥ pṛthivīpatiḥ dhṛtarāṣṭram samudiśya suvarṇam
rajatam gāḥ ca sumahādhanāḥ śayyāḥ ca dadau
17. That lord of the earth, with Dhritarashtra in mind, gave away gold, silver, cows, and very valuable beds.
गान्धार्याश्चैव तेजस्वी पृथायाश्च पृथक्पृथक् ।
संकीर्त्य नामनी राजा ददौ दानमनुत्तमम् ॥१८॥
18. gāndhāryāścaiva tejasvī pṛthāyāśca pṛthakpṛthak ,
saṁkīrtya nāmanī rājā dadau dānamanuttamam.
18. gāndhāryāḥ ca eva tejasvī pṛthāyāḥ ca pṛthakpṛthak
saṃkīrtya nāmanī rājā dadau dānam anuttamam
18. tejasvī rājā gāndhāryāḥ ca pṛthāyāḥ ca nāmanī
pṛthakpṛthak saṃkīrtya anuttamam dānam dadau
18. The brilliant king, having distinctly mentioned the names of both Gandhari and Pritha, gave an excellent gift.
यो यदिच्छति यावच्च तावत्स लभते द्विजः ।
शयनं भोजनं यानं मणिरत्नमथो धनम् ॥१९॥
19. yo yadicchati yāvacca tāvatsa labhate dvijaḥ ,
śayanaṁ bhojanaṁ yānaṁ maṇiratnamatho dhanam.
19. yaḥ yat icchati yāvat ca tāvat sa labhate dvijaḥ
śayanam bhojanam yānam maṇiratnam atha u dhanam
19. yaḥ dvijaḥ yat yāvat ca icchati,
saḥ tāvat labhate: śayanam,
bhojanam,
yānam,
maṇiratnam,
atha u dhanam (labhate).
19. Whatever a brahmin (dvija) desires, and as much as he desires, that much he obtains: beds, food, conveyances, jewels, gems, and also wealth.
यानमाच्छादनं भोगान्दासीश्च परिचारिकाः ।
ददौ राजा समुद्दिश्य तयोर्मात्रोर्महीपतिः ॥२०॥
20. yānamācchādanaṁ bhogāndāsīśca paricārikāḥ ,
dadau rājā samuddiśya tayormātrormahīpatiḥ.
20. yānam ācchādanam bhogān dāsīḥ ca paricārikāḥ
dadau rājā samudiśya tayoḥ mātṛoḥ mahīpatiḥ
20. mahīpatiḥ rājā tayoḥ mātṛoḥ samudiśya yānam,
ācchādanam,
bhogān,
dāsīḥ ca paricārikāḥ dadau
20. The lord of the earth, the king, with those two mothers (Gandhari and Pritha) in mind, gave conveyances, garments, enjoyments, maidservants, and female attendants.
ततः स पृथिवीपालो दत्त्वा श्राद्धान्यनेकशः ।
प्रविवेश पुनर्धीमान्नगरं वारणाह्वयम् ॥२१॥
21. tataḥ sa pṛthivīpālo dattvā śrāddhānyanekaśaḥ ,
praviveśa punardhīmānnagaraṁ vāraṇāhvayam.
21. tataḥ saḥ pṛthivīpālaḥ dattvā śrāddhāni anekaśaḥ
praviveśa punar dhīmān nagaram vāraṇāhvayam
21. tataḥ saḥ dhīmān pṛthivīpālaḥ anekaśaḥ śrāddhāni
dattvā punar vāraṇāhvayam nagaram praviveśa
21. Thereafter, that wise king, having performed numerous ancestral rites (śrāddhas), re-entered the city named Vāraṇa [Hastinapura].
ते चापि राजवचनात्पुरुषा ये गताभवन् ।
संकल्प्य तेषां कुल्यानि पुनः प्रत्यागमंस्ततः ॥२२॥
22. te cāpi rājavacanātpuruṣā ye gatābhavan ,
saṁkalpya teṣāṁ kulyāni punaḥ pratyāgamaṁstataḥ.
22. te ca api rājavacanāt puruṣāḥ ye gatāḥ abhavan
saṅkalpya teṣām kulyāni punaḥ pratyāgaman tataḥ
22. ca api ye puruṣāḥ rājavacanāt gatāḥ abhavan,
te teṣām kulyāni saṅkalpya punaḥ tataḥ pratyāgaman
22. And those men who had gone by the king's command, having arranged for their ancestral affairs, then returned.
माल्यैर्गन्धैश्च विविधैः पूजयित्वा यथाविधि ।
कुल्यानि तेषां संयोज्य तदाचख्युर्महीपतेः ॥२३॥
23. mālyairgandhaiśca vividhaiḥ pūjayitvā yathāvidhi ,
kulyāni teṣāṁ saṁyojya tadācakhyurmahīpateḥ.
23. mālyaiḥ gandhaiḥ ca vividhaiḥ pūjayitvā yathāvidhi
kulyāni teṣām saṃyojya tad ācakhuyuḥ mahīpateḥ
23. ca vividhaiḥ mālyaiḥ gandhaiḥ yathāvidhi pūjayitvā,
teṣām kulyāni saṃyojya,
tad mahīpateḥ ācakhuyuḥ
23. Having performed worship with various garlands and fragrances in accordance with the rules, and having settled their ancestral affairs, they reported all this to the king.
समाश्वास्य च राजानं धर्मात्मानं युधिष्ठिरम् ।
नारदोऽप्यगमद्राजन्परमर्षिर्यथेप्सितम् ॥२४॥
24. samāśvāsya ca rājānaṁ dharmātmānaṁ yudhiṣṭhiram ,
nārado'pyagamadrājanparamarṣiryathepsitam.
24. samāśvāsya ca rājānam dharmātmānam yudhiṣṭhiram
nāradaḥ api agamat rājan paramarṣiḥ yathā īpsitam
24. rājan,
ca rājānam dharmātmānam yudhiṣṭhiram samāśvāsya,
paramarṣiḥ nāradaḥ api yathā īpsitam agamat
24. And having consoled King Yudhishthira, who possessed a righteous (dharma) nature, the great sage (paramarṣi) Narada also departed, O king, to wherever he desired.
एवं वर्षाण्यतीतानि धृतराष्ट्रस्य धीमतः ।
वनवासे तदा त्रीणि नगरे दश पञ्च च ॥२५॥
25. evaṁ varṣāṇyatītāni dhṛtarāṣṭrasya dhīmataḥ ,
vanavāse tadā trīṇi nagare daśa pañca ca.
25. evam varṣāṇi atītāni dhṛtarāṣṭrasya dhīmataḥ
vanavāse tadā trīṇi nagare daśa pañca ca
25. evam dhīmataḥ dhṛtarāṣṭrasya tadā vanavāse
trīṇi ca nagare daśa pañca varṣāṇi atītāni
25. In this way, for the wise Dhritarashtra, three years passed in forest dwelling, and fifteen (ten and five) in the city.
हतपुत्रस्य संग्रामे दानानि ददतः सदा ।
ज्ञातिसंबन्धिमित्राणां भ्रातॄणां स्वजनस्य च ॥२६॥
26. hataputrasya saṁgrāme dānāni dadataḥ sadā ,
jñātisaṁbandhimitrāṇāṁ bhrātṝṇāṁ svajanasya ca.
26. hataputrasya saṃgrāme dānāni dadataḥ sadā
jñātisaṃbandhimitrāṇām bhrātṝṇām svajanasya ca
26. saṃgrāme hataputrasya sadā dānāni dadataḥ
jñātisaṃbandhimitrāṇām bhrātṝṇām ca svajanasya
26. (Referring to Dhritarashtra from the previous verse) of him whose sons were killed in battle, always giving gifts (dāna) to his kinsmen, relatives, friends, brothers, and his own people.
युधिष्ठिरस्तु नृपतिर्नातिप्रीतमनास्तदा ।
धारयामास तद्राज्यं निहतज्ञातिबान्धवः ॥२७॥
27. yudhiṣṭhirastu nṛpatirnātiprītamanāstadā ,
dhārayāmāsa tadrājyaṁ nihatajñātibāndhavaḥ.
27. yudhiṣṭhiraḥ tu nṛpatiḥ na atiprītamanāḥ tadā
dhārayāmāsa tat rājyam nihatajñātibāndhavaḥ
27. tadā tu nṛpatiḥ yudhiṣṭhiraḥ na atiprītamanāḥ
nihatajñātibāndhavaḥ tat rājyam dhārayāmāsa
27. But then, King Yudhishthira, with a mind not greatly pleased and whose kinsmen and relatives had been slain, sustained that kingdom.
