तेष्वनीकेषु भग्नेषु पाण्डुपुत्रेण संजय ।
चलितानां द्रुतानां च कथमासीन्मनो हि वः ॥१॥

1. Dhṛtarāṣṭra said: 'O Sañjaya, when those armies were shattered by the son of Pāṇḍu, how indeed were the spirits of your fleeing and retreating men?'
अनीकानां प्रभग्नानां व्यवस्थानमपश्यताम् ।
दुष्करं प्रतिसंधानं तन्ममाचक्ष्व संजय ॥२॥
2. anīkānāṁ prabhagnānāṁ vyavasthānamapaśyatām ,
duṣkaraṁ pratisaṁdhānaṁ tanmamācakṣva saṁjaya.

2. O Sañjaya, tell me about the difficult restoration of those shattered armies whose men were unable to discern any proper order.
संजय उवाच ।
तथापि तव पुत्रस्य प्रियकामा विशां पते ।
यशः प्रवीरा लोकेषु रक्षन्तो द्रोणमन्वयुः ॥३॥
3. saṁjaya uvāca ,
tathāpi tava putrasya priyakāmā viśāṁ pate ,
yaśaḥ pravīrā lokeṣu rakṣanto droṇamanvayuḥ.

3. Saṃjaya said: Nevertheless, O lord of the people, the valiant warriors, wishing for your son's well-being and protecting his fame among the people, followed Droṇa.
समुद्यतेषु शस्त्रेषु संप्राप्ते च युधिष्ठिरे ।
अकुर्वन्नार्यकर्माणि भैरवे सत्यभीतवत् ॥४॥
4. samudyateṣu śastreṣu saṁprāpte ca yudhiṣṭhire ,
akurvannāryakarmāṇi bhairave satyabhītavat.

4. With weapons raised and Yudhiṣṭhira having arrived, they did not perform noble deeds (karma) in that dreadful situation, acting as if truly terrified.
अन्तरं भीमसेनस्य प्रापतन्नमितौजसः ।
सात्यकेश्चैव शूरस्य धृष्टद्युम्नस्य चाभिभो ॥५॥
5. antaraṁ bhīmasenasya prāpatannamitaujasaḥ ,
sātyakeścaiva śūrasya dhṛṣṭadyumnasya cābhibho.
5. antaram bhīmasenasya prāpatan amitaujasaḥ sātyakeḥ
ca eva śūrasya dhṛṣṭadyumnasya ca abhibho
5. abhibho antaram bhīmasenasya amitaujasaḥ sātyakeḥ

5. O lord, they attacked Bhīmasena of immense energy, and indeed the brave Sātyaki, and Dhṛṣṭadyumna, seeking an opening.
द्रोणं द्रोणमिति क्रूराः पाञ्चालाः समचोदयन् ।
मा द्रोणमिति पुत्रास्ते कुरून्सर्वानचोदयन् ॥६॥
6. droṇaṁ droṇamiti krūrāḥ pāñcālāḥ samacodayan ,
mā droṇamiti putrāste kurūnsarvānacodayan.
6. droṇam droṇam iti krūrāḥ pāñcālāḥ samacodayan
mā droṇam iti putrāḥ te kurūn sarvān acodayan
6. krūrāḥ pāñcālāḥ droṇam droṇam iti samacodayan
te putrāḥ mā droṇam iti sarvān kurūn acodayan
6. The fierce Pāñcālas incited them, shouting 'Droṇa! Droṇa!' (meaning, attack Droṇa!). Your sons, in turn, urged all the Kurus, saying 'Do not (attack) Droṇa!'
द्रोणं द्रोणमिति ह्येके मा द्रोणमिति चापरे ।
कुरूणां पाण्डवानां च द्रोणद्यूतमवर्तत ॥७॥
7. droṇaṁ droṇamiti hyeke mā droṇamiti cāpare ,
kurūṇāṁ pāṇḍavānāṁ ca droṇadyūtamavartata.
7. droṇam droṇam iti hi eke mā droṇam iti ca apare
kurūṇām pāṇḍavānām ca droṇadyūtam avartata

7. Some exclaimed, "Drona! Drona!" while others cried, "Not Drona!" Indeed, a gamble (dyūta) involving Drona took place between the Kurus and the Pandavas.
यं यं स्म भजते द्रोणः पाञ्चालानां रथव्रजम् ।
तत्र तत्र स्म पाञ्चाल्यो धृष्टद्युम्नोऽथ धीयते ॥८॥
8. yaṁ yaṁ sma bhajate droṇaḥ pāñcālānāṁ rathavrajam ,
tatra tatra sma pāñcālyo dhṛṣṭadyumno'tha dhīyate.
8. yam yam sma bhajate droṇaḥ pāñcālānām rathavrajām
tatra tatra sma pāñcālyaḥ dhṛṣṭadyumnaḥ atha dhīyate
8. droṇaḥ yam yam pāñcālānām rathavrajām sma bhajate,

8. Whichever squadron of chariots belonging to the Pañcālas Drona attacked, there, Dhrṣṭadyumna, the son of Pañcāla, was always stationed.
यथाभागविपर्यासे संग्रामे भैरवे सति ।
वीराः समासदन्वीरानगच्छन्भीरवः परान् ॥९॥
9. yathābhāgaviparyāse saṁgrāme bhairave sati ,
vīrāḥ samāsadanvīrānagacchanbhīravaḥ parān.

vīrāḥ samāsadan vīrān agacchan bhīravaḥ parān

9. As the terrifying battle continued, with positions and divisions constantly shifting, heroes confronted other heroes, while cowards fled from their opponents.
अकम्पनीयाः शत्रूणां बभूवुस्तत्र पाण्डवाः ।
अकम्पयंस्त्वनीकानि स्मरन्तः क्लेशमात्मनः ॥१०॥
10. akampanīyāḥ śatrūṇāṁ babhūvustatra pāṇḍavāḥ ,
akampayaṁstvanīkāni smarantaḥ kleśamātmanaḥ.
10. akampanīyāḥ śatrūṇām babhūvuḥ tatra pāṇḍavāḥ
akampayan tu anīkāni smarantaḥ kleśam ātmanaḥ
10. tatra pāṇḍavāḥ śatrūṇām akampanīyāḥ babhūvuḥ,
tu smarantaḥ ātmanaḥ kleśam anīkāni akampayan
10. The Pandavas, remembering their own suffering (kleśa), became unshakable to their enemies; instead, they made the enemy armies tremble.
ते त्वमर्षवशं प्राप्ता ह्रीमन्तः सत्त्वचोदिताः ।
त्यक्त्वा प्राणान्न्यवर्तन्त घ्नन्तो द्रोणं महाहवे ॥११॥
11. te tvamarṣavaśaṁ prāptā hrīmantaḥ sattvacoditāḥ ,
tyaktvā prāṇānnyavartanta ghnanto droṇaṁ mahāhave.
11. te tu amarṣa-vaśam prāptāḥ hrīmantaḥ sattva-coditāḥ
tyaktvā prāṇān ni-avartanta ghnantaḥ droṇam mahā-have
11. te hrīmantaḥ sattva-coditāḥ amarṣa-vaśam prāptāḥ (tu)
prāṇān tyaktvā mahā-have droṇam ghnantaḥ ni-avartanta
11. Indeed, those warriors, overcome by indignation and filled with shame, driven by their inner strength, sacrificed their lives and returned to the fray, striking Drona in the great battle.
अयसामिव संपातः शिलानामिव चाभवत् ।
दीव्यतां तुमुले युद्धे प्राणैरमिततेजसाम् ॥१२॥
12. ayasāmiva saṁpātaḥ śilānāmiva cābhavat ,
dīvyatāṁ tumule yuddhe prāṇairamitatejasām.
12. ayasām iva sampātaḥ śilānām iva ca abhavat
dīvyatām tumule yuddhe prāṇaiḥ amita-tejasām
12. amita-tejasām dīvyatām tumule yuddhe prāṇaiḥ
(yuddham) ayasām iva śilānām iva ca sampātaḥ abhavat
12. In that tumultuous battle, where warriors of immeasurable splendor were gambling with their lives, there was a clash like that of iron [weapons] and crashing rocks.
न तु स्मरन्ति संग्राममपि वृद्धास्तथाविधम् ।
दृष्टपूर्वं महाराज श्रुतपूर्वमथापि वा ॥१३॥
13. na tu smaranti saṁgrāmamapi vṛddhāstathāvidham ,
dṛṣṭapūrvaṁ mahārāja śrutapūrvamathāpi vā.
13. na tu smaranti saṅgrāmam api vṛddhāḥ tathāvidham
dṛṣṭa-pūrvam mahārāja śruta-pūrvam atha api vā
13. mahārāja,
vṛddhāḥ api (tu) dṛṣṭa-pūrvam vā śruta-pūrvam atha api vā tathāvidham saṅgrāmam na smaranti
13. O great king, even the elders do not recall ever having seen or even heard of a battle quite like this.
प्राकम्पतेव पृथिवी तस्मिन्वीरावसादने ।
प्रवर्तता बलौघेन महता भारपीडिता ॥१४॥
14. prākampateva pṛthivī tasminvīrāvasādane ,
pravartatā balaughena mahatā bhārapīḍitā.
14. pra-akampata iva pṛthivī tasmin vīra-avasādane
pravartatā bala-oghena mahatā bhāra-pīḍitā
14. mahatā pravartatā bala-oghena bhāra-pīḍitā
pṛthivī tasmin vīra-avasādane iva pra-akampata
14. The earth, burdened by the immense and advancing mass of troops, seemed to tremble during that destruction of warriors.
घूर्णतो हि बलौघस्य दिवं स्तब्ध्वेव निस्वनः ।
अजातशत्रोः क्रुद्धस्य पुत्रस्य तव चाभवत् ॥१५॥
15. ghūrṇato hi balaughasya divaṁ stabdhveva nisvanaḥ ,
ajātaśatroḥ kruddhasya putrasya tava cābhavat.
15. ghūrṇataḥ hi balaughasya divam stabdhvā iva nisvanaḥ
ajātaśatroḥ kruddhasya putrasya tava ca abhavat
15. hi tava putrasya ghūrṇataḥ balaughasya nisvanaḥ divam
stabdhvā iva ca ajātaśatroḥ kruddhasya putrasya abhavat
15. Indeed, a roar, as if paralyzing the sky, arose from your son's whirling mass of forces, and from the angry son of Ajatashatru (Yudhishthira).
समासाद्य तु पाण्डूनामनीकानि सहस्रशः ।
द्रोणेन चरता संख्ये प्रभग्नानि शितैः शरैः ॥१६॥
16. samāsādya tu pāṇḍūnāmanīkāni sahasraśaḥ ,
droṇena caratā saṁkhye prabhagnāni śitaiḥ śaraiḥ.
16. samāsādya tu pāṇḍūnām anīkāni sahasraśaḥ
droṇena caratā saṃkhye prabhagnāni śitaiḥ śaraiḥ
16. tu droṇena saṃkhye caratā samāsādya pāṇḍūnām
sahasraśaḥ anīkāni śitaiḥ śaraiḥ prabhagnāni
16. But indeed, after encountering thousands of the Pandavas' armies, they were shattered by Drona, who was fighting in battle, with sharp arrows.
तेषु प्रमथ्यमानेषु द्रोणेनाद्भुतकर्मणा ।
पर्यवारयदासाद्य द्रोणं सेनापतिः स्वयम् ॥१७॥
17. teṣu pramathyamāneṣu droṇenādbhutakarmaṇā ,
paryavārayadāsādya droṇaṁ senāpatiḥ svayam.
17. teṣu pramathyamāneṣu droṇena adbhutakarmaṇā
paryavārayat āsādya droṇam senāpatiḥ svayam
17. teṣu pramathyamāneṣu adbhutakarmaṇā droṇena,
senāpatiḥ svayam droṇam āsādya paryavārayat
17. While those [armies] were being crushed by Drona, who performed wonderful deeds, the commander of the army himself, having approached Drona, surrounded him.
तदद्भुतमभूद्युद्धं द्रोणपाञ्चाल्ययोस्तदा ।
नैव तस्योपमा काचित्संभवेदिति मे मतिः ॥१८॥
18. tadadbhutamabhūdyuddhaṁ droṇapāñcālyayostadā ,
naiva tasyopamā kācitsaṁbhavediti me matiḥ.
18. tat adbhutam abhūt yuddham droṇapāñcālyayoḥ tadā
na eva tasya upamā kācit saṃbhavet iti me matiḥ
18. tadā droṇapāñcālyayoḥ tat adbhutam yuddham abhūt.
tasya kācit upamā na eva saṃbhavet iti me matiḥ.
18. That battle between Drona and Drupada's son (Dhrishtadyumna) was amazing at that time. Indeed, no comparison to it could possibly exist – that is my thought.
ततो नीलोऽनलप्रख्यो ददाह कुरुवाहिनीम् ।
शरस्फुलिङ्गश्चापार्चिर्दहन्कक्षमिवानलः ॥१९॥
19. tato nīlo'nalaprakhyo dadāha kuruvāhinīm ,
śarasphuliṅgaścāpārcirdahankakṣamivānalaḥ.
19. tataḥ nīlaḥ analaprakhyaḥ dadāha kuruvāhinīm
śarasphuliṅgaḥ cāpārciḥ dahan kakṣam iva analaḥ
19. tataḥ analaprakhyaḥ nīlaḥ śarasphuliṅgaḥ cāpārciḥ
dahan analaḥ kakṣam iva kuruvāhinīm dadāha
19. Then Nila, who resembled fire, consumed the Kaurava army. He was like a fire burning dry grass, with his arrows acting as sparks and his bow as a flame.
तं दहन्तमनीकानि द्रोणपुत्रः प्रतापवान् ।
पूर्वाभिभाषी सुश्लक्ष्णं स्मयमानोऽभ्यभाषत ॥२०॥
20. taṁ dahantamanīkāni droṇaputraḥ pratāpavān ,
pūrvābhibhāṣī suślakṣṇaṁ smayamāno'bhyabhāṣata.
20. tam dahantam anīkāni droṇaputraḥ pratāpavān
pūrvābhibhāṣī suślakṣṇam smayamānaḥ abhyabhāṣata
20. pratāpavān droṇaputraḥ pūrvābhibhāṣī suślakṣṇam
smayamānaḥ anīkāni dahantam tam abhyabhāṣata
20. Drona's mighty son, Ashvatthama, always one to speak first, then addressed Nila, who was consuming the enemy armies, speaking very courteously and with a smile.
नील किं बहुभिर्दग्धैस्तव योधैः शरार्चिषा ।
मयैकेन हि युध्यस्व क्रुद्धः प्रहर चाशुगैः ॥२१॥
21. nīla kiṁ bahubhirdagdhaistava yodhaiḥ śarārciṣā ,
mayaikena hi yudhyasva kruddhaḥ prahara cāśugaiḥ.
21. nīla kim bahubhiḥ dagdhaiḥ tava yodhaiḥ śarārciṣā
mayā ekena hi yudhyasva kruddhaḥ prahara ca āśugaiḥ
21. nīla! tava śarārciṣā bahubhiḥ yodhaiḥ dagdhaiḥ kim? ekena mayā hi yudhyasva,
kruddhaḥ ca āśugaiḥ prahara!
21. O Nila, what is the use of so many warriors being burned by the flame of your arrows? Instead, fight with me alone, and in your anger, strike with your swift arrows!
तं पद्मनिकराकारं पद्मपत्रनिभेक्षणम् ।
व्याकोशपद्माभमुखं नीलो विव्याध सायकैः ॥२२॥
22. taṁ padmanikarākāraṁ padmapatranibhekṣaṇam ,
vyākośapadmābhamukhaṁ nīlo vivyādha sāyakaiḥ.
22. tam padmanikarākāram padmapatranibhekṣaṇam
vyākośapadmābhamukham nīlaḥ vivyādha sāyakaiḥ
22. nīlaḥ padmanikarākāram padmapatranibhekṣaṇam

22. Nila then pierced him, whose form resembled a multitude of lotuses, whose eyes were like lotus petals, and whose face shone like a fully blossomed lotus, with his arrows.
तेनातिविद्धः सहसा द्रौणिर्भल्लैः शितैस्त्रिभिः ।
धनुर्ध्वजं च छत्रं च द्विषतः स न्यकृन्तत ॥२३॥
23. tenātividdhaḥ sahasā drauṇirbhallaiḥ śitaistribhiḥ ,
dhanurdhvajaṁ ca chatraṁ ca dviṣataḥ sa nyakṛntata.
23. tena atividdhaḥ sahasā drauṇiḥ bhallaiḥ śitaiḥ tribhiḥ
dhanuḥ dhvajaṃ ca chatraṃ ca dviṣataḥ saḥ nyakṛntata
23. saḥ drauṇiḥ tena atividdhaḥ sahasā tribhiḥ śitaiḥ
bhallaiḥ dviṣataḥ dhanuḥ dhvajaṃ ca chatraṃ ca nyakṛntata
23. Deeply pierced by him instantly with three sharp broad-headed arrows, Drauni cut down his enemy's bow-banner and umbrella.
सोत्प्लुत्य स्यन्दनात्तस्मान्नीलश्चर्मवरासिधृक् ।
द्रोणायनेः शिरः कायाद्धर्तुमैच्छत्पतत्रिवत् ॥२४॥
24. sotplutya syandanāttasmānnīlaścarmavarāsidhṛk ,
droṇāyaneḥ śiraḥ kāyāddhartumaicchatpatatrivat.
24. saḥ utplutya syandanāt tasmāt nīlaḥ carmavarāsidhṛk
droṇāyaneḥ śiraḥ kāyāt hartum aicchat patatrivat
24. nīlaḥ carmavarāsidhṛk saḥ tasmāt syandanāt utplutya
droṇāyaneḥ kāyāt śiraḥ patatrivat hartum aicchat
24. Nila, holding a shield and an excellent sword, jumped from that chariot and, like a bird, wished to sever Dronayana's (Ashvatthama's) head from his body.
तस्योद्यतासेः सुनसं शिरः कायात्सकुण्डलम् ।
भल्लेनापाहरद्द्रौणिः स्मयमान इवानघ ॥२५॥
25. tasyodyatāseḥ sunasaṁ śiraḥ kāyātsakuṇḍalam ,
bhallenāpāharaddrauṇiḥ smayamāna ivānagha.
25. tasya udyatāseḥ sunasaṃ śiraḥ kāyāt sakuṇḍalam
bhallena apāharat drauṇiḥ smayamānaḥ iva anagha
25. anagha drauṇiḥ smayamānaḥ iva tasya udyatāseḥ
sunasaṃ sakuṇḍalam śiraḥ kāyāt bhallena apāharat
25. O sinless one, Drauni, as if smiling, struck with an arrow and severed his head, which had a beautiful nose and earrings, from his body, even as he (Nila) had his sword raised.
संपूर्णचन्द्राभमुखः पद्मपत्रनिभेक्षणः ।
प्रांशुरुत्पलगर्भाभो निहतो न्यपतत्क्षितौ ॥२६॥
26. saṁpūrṇacandrābhamukhaḥ padmapatranibhekṣaṇaḥ ,
prāṁśurutpalagarbhābho nihato nyapatatkṣitau.
26. sampūrṇacandrābhamukhaḥ padmapatranibhekṣaṇaḥ
prāṃśuḥ utpalagarbhābhaḥ nihataḥ nyapatat kṣitau
26. sampūrṇacandrābhamukhaḥ padmapatranibhekṣaṇaḥ
prāṃśuḥ utpalagarbhābhaḥ nihataḥ kṣitau nyapatat
26. With a face resembling a full moon, eyes like lotus petals, and a tall physique with a complexion like the core of a blue lotus, he, thus slain, fell to the ground.
ततः प्रविव्यथे सेना पाण्डवी भृशमाकुला ।
आचार्यपुत्रेण हते नीले ज्वलिततेजसि ॥२७॥
27. tataḥ pravivyathe senā pāṇḍavī bhṛśamākulā ,
ācāryaputreṇa hate nīle jvalitatejasi.

ākulā ācāryaputreṇa hate nīle jvalitatejasi

27. Then the Pandava army became exceedingly agitated and deeply distressed, as Nila, whose valor blazed, had been killed by the son of the teacher (ācāryaputra).
अचिन्तयंश्च ते सर्वे पाण्डवानां महारथाः ।
कथं नो वासविस्त्रायाच्छत्रुभ्य इति मारिष ॥२८॥
28. acintayaṁśca te sarve pāṇḍavānāṁ mahārathāḥ ,
kathaṁ no vāsavistrāyācchatrubhya iti māriṣa.
28. acintayan ca te sarve pāṇḍavānām mahārathāḥ
katham naḥ vāsaviḥ trāyāt śatrubhyaḥ iti māriṣa
28. māriṣa te sarve pāṇḍavānām mahārathāḥ ca

28. And all those great chariot-warriors of the Pandavas pondered, 'How will Vasavi (Arjuna) protect us from our enemies?' O venerable one.
दक्षिणेन तु सेनायाः कुरुते कदनं बली ।
संशप्तकावशेषस्य नारायणबलस्य च ॥२९॥
29. dakṣiṇena tu senāyāḥ kurute kadanaṁ balī ,
saṁśaptakāvaśeṣasya nārāyaṇabalasya ca.
29. dakṣiṇena tu senāyāḥ kurute kadanam balī
saṃśaptakāvaśeṣasya nārāyaṇaabalasya ca
29. tu balī senāyāḥ dakṣiṇena saṃśaptakāvaśeṣasya
nārāyaṇaabalasya ca kadanam kurute
29. But on the right flank of the army, the mighty one (Arjuna) wreaks destruction upon the remnants of the Saṃśaptaka (oath-bound) forces and the Nārāyaṇa army.
