ततो हलहलाशब्दो दिवि राजन्महानभूत् ।
प्रस्वापं भीष्म मा स्राक्षीरिति कौरवनन्दन ॥१॥
1. bhīṣma uvāca ,
tato halahalāśabdo divi rājanmahānabhūt ,
prasvāpaṁ bhīṣma mā srākṣīriti kauravanandana.

1. Bhishma said: "Then, O King, a great clamor (halahalāśabdaḥ) arose in the sky, (saying,) 'O Bhishma, O delight of the Kurus (kauravanandana), do not release the sleep-inducing weapon (prasvāpa)!'"
अयुञ्जमेव चैवाहं तदस्त्रं भृगुनन्दने ।
प्रस्वापं मां प्रयुञ्जानं नारदो वाक्यमब्रवीत् ॥२॥
2. ayuñjameva caivāhaṁ tadastraṁ bhṛgunandane ,
prasvāpaṁ māṁ prayuñjānaṁ nārado vākyamabravīt.
2. ayuñjam eva ca eva aham tat astram bhṛgunandane
prasvāpam mām prayujānam nāradaḥ vākyam abravīt
2. ca eva aham bhṛgunandane tat astram ayuñjam eva

2. And indeed, O descendant of Bhrigu (bhṛgunandane), even as I was not yet employing that weapon, Narada spoke words to me, who was about to employ the sleep-inducing weapon (prasvāpa).
एते वियति कौरव्य दिवि देवगणाः स्थिताः ।
ते त्वां निवारयन्त्यद्य प्रस्वापं मा प्रयोजय ॥३॥
3. ete viyati kauravya divi devagaṇāḥ sthitāḥ ,
te tvāṁ nivārayantyadya prasvāpaṁ mā prayojaya.
3. ete viyati kauravya divi devagaṇāḥ sthitāḥ te
tvām nivārayanti adya prasvāpam mā prayojaya
3. kauravya ete devagaṇāḥ sthitāḥ viyati divi te

3. O Kauravya, these hosts of gods are present in the sky, in heaven. They are now preventing you; do not give way to sleep.
रामस्तपस्वी ब्रह्मण्यो ब्राह्मणश्च गुरुश्च ते ।
तस्यावमानं कौरव्य मा स्म कार्षीः कथंचन ॥४॥
4. rāmastapasvī brahmaṇyo brāhmaṇaśca guruśca te ,
tasyāvamānaṁ kauravya mā sma kārṣīḥ kathaṁcana.
4. rāmaḥ tapasvī brahmaṇyaḥ brāhmaṇaḥ ca guruḥ ca te
tasya avamānam kauravya mā sma kārṣīḥ kathaṃcana
4. kauravya rāmaḥ tapasvī brahmaṇyaḥ brāhmaṇaḥ ca te
guruḥ ca tasya avamānam mā sma kārṣīḥ kathaṃcana
4. Rama is an ascetic (tapasvin), a pious (brahmaṇya) individual, a Brahmin, and your spiritual teacher (guru). O Kauravya, you must never show him disrespect in any way whatsoever.
ततोऽपश्यं दिविष्ठान्वै तानष्टौ ब्रह्मवादिनः ।
ते मां स्मयन्तो राजेन्द्र शनकैरिदमब्रुवन् ॥५॥
5. tato'paśyaṁ diviṣṭhānvai tānaṣṭau brahmavādinaḥ ,
te māṁ smayanto rājendra śanakairidamabruvan.
5. tataḥ apaśyam diviṣṭhān vai tān aṣṭau brahmavādinaḥ
te mām smayantaḥ rājendra śanakaiḥ idam abruvan
5. tataḥ vai diviṣṭhān tān aṣṭau brahmavādinaḥ apaśyam
rājendra te smayantaḥ mām śanakaiḥ idam abruvan
5. Then, O King of Kings (rājendra), I indeed saw those eight expounders of sacred knowledge (brahmavādin) who reside in heaven. Smiling, they slowly spoke these words to me.
यथाह भरतश्रेष्ठ नारदस्तत्तथा कुरु ।
एतद्धि परमं श्रेयो लोकानां भरतर्षभ ॥६॥
6. yathāha bharataśreṣṭha nāradastattathā kuru ,
etaddhi paramaṁ śreyo lokānāṁ bharatarṣabha.
6. yathā āha bharataśreṣṭha nāradaḥ tat tathā kuru
etat hi paramam śreyaḥ lokānām bharatarṣabha
6. bharataśreṣṭha nāradaḥ yathā āha tat tathā kuru
bharatarṣabha etat hi lokānām paramam śreyaḥ
6. O best among the Bharatas (bharataśreṣṭha), do exactly as Narada has instructed. Indeed, O Bull among the Bharatas (bharatarṣabha), this is the supreme good for all beings (loka).
ततश्च प्रतिसंहृत्य तदस्त्रं स्वापनं मृधे ।
ब्रह्मास्त्रं दीपयां चक्रे तस्मिन्युधि यथाविधि ॥७॥
7. tataśca pratisaṁhṛtya tadastraṁ svāpanaṁ mṛdhe ,
brahmāstraṁ dīpayāṁ cakre tasminyudhi yathāvidhi.
7. tataḥ ca pratisaṃhṛtya tat astram svāpanam mṛdhe
brahmāstram dīpayām cakre tasmin yudhi yathāvidhi
7. tataḥ ca mṛdhe tat svāpanam astram pratisaṃhṛtya
tasmin yudhi yathāvidhi brahmāstram dīpayām cakre
7. And then, having retracted that sleep-inducing weapon in the skirmish, he properly activated the brahmāstra (brahmāstra) in that very battle.
ततो रामो रुषितो राजपुत्र दृष्ट्वा तदस्त्रं विनिवर्तितं वै ।
जितोऽस्मि भीष्मेण सुमन्दबुद्धिरित्येव वाक्यं सहसा व्यमुञ्चत् ॥८॥
8. tato rāmo ruṣito rājaputra; dṛṣṭvā tadastraṁ vinivartitaṁ vai ,
jito'smi bhīṣmeṇa sumandabuddhi;rityeva vākyaṁ sahasā vyamuñcat.
8. tataḥ rāmaḥ ruṣitaḥ rājaputra
dṛṣṭvā tat astram vinivartitam vai
jitaḥ asmi bhīṣmeṇa sumandabuddhiḥ
iti eva vākyam sahasā vyamuñcat
8. tataḥ rājaputra,
ruṣitaḥ rāmaḥ tat astram vinivartitam vai dṛṣṭvā,
jitaḥ asmi bhīṣmeṇa,
sumandabuddhiḥ iti eva vākyam sahasā vyamuñcat
8. Then Rāma, enraged, O prince, having seen that weapon indeed neutralized, suddenly exclaimed this statement: "I am defeated by Bhīṣma, I am utterly dull-witted!"
ततोऽपश्यत्पितरं जामदग्न्यः पितुस्तथा पितरं तस्य चान्यम् ।
त एवैनं संपरिवार्य तस्थुरूचुश्चैनं सान्त्वपूर्वं तदानीम् ॥९॥
9. tato'paśyatpitaraṁ jāmadagnyaḥ; pitustathā pitaraṁ tasya cānyam ,
ta evainaṁ saṁparivārya tasthu;rūcuścainaṁ sāntvapūrvaṁ tadānīm.
9. tataḥ apaśyat pitaram jāmadagnyaḥ
pituḥ tathā pitaram tasya ca anyam
te eva enam saṃparivārya tasthuḥ
ūcuḥ ca enam sāntvapūrvam tadānīm
9. tataḥ jāmadagnyaḥ pitaram,
tathā tasya pituḥ pitaram ca anyam apaśyat te eva enam saṃparivārya tasthuḥ ca tadānīm enam sāntvapūrvam ūcuḥ
9. Then Jāmadagnya (Rāma, the son of Jamadagni) saw his father, and also his father's father, and another ancestor of his. They then stood surrounding him and spoke comforting words to him.
मा स्मैवं साहसं वत्स पुनः कार्षीः कथंचन ।
भीष्मेण संयुगं गन्तुं क्षत्रियेण विशेषतः ॥१०॥
10. mā smaivaṁ sāhasaṁ vatsa punaḥ kārṣīḥ kathaṁcana ,
bhīṣmeṇa saṁyugaṁ gantuṁ kṣatriyeṇa viśeṣataḥ.
10. mā sma evam sāhasam vatsa punaḥ kārṣīḥ kathaṃcana
bhīṣmeṇa saṃyugam gantum kṣatriyeṇa viśeṣataḥ
10. vatsa,
mā sma evam sāhasam punaḥ kathaṃcana kārṣīḥ,
viśeṣataḥ bhīṣmeṇa kṣatriyeṇa saṃyugam gantum
10. "O dear child, do not ever again perform such a rash act, especially by attempting to engage in battle with Bhīṣma, who is a kshatriya (kṣatriya)."
क्षत्रियस्य तु धर्मोऽयं यद्युद्धं भृगुनन्दन ।
स्वाध्यायो व्रतचर्या च ब्राह्मणानां परं धनम् ॥११॥
11. kṣatriyasya tu dharmo'yaṁ yadyuddhaṁ bhṛgunandana ,
svādhyāyo vratacaryā ca brāhmaṇānāṁ paraṁ dhanam.
11. kṣatriyasya tu dharmaḥ ayam yat yuddham bhṛgunandana
svādhyāyaḥ vratacaryā ca brāhmaṇānām param dhanam
11. bhṛgunandana,
kṣatriyasya tu ayam dharmaḥ yat yuddham; ca brāhmaṇānām svādhyāyaḥ vratacaryā param dhanam.
11. O son of Bhrigu, this indeed is the duty (dharma) of a kṣatriya: battle. And for brahmins, the highest wealth is the study of sacred texts and the observance of vows.
इदं निमित्ते कस्मिंश्चिदस्माभिरुपमन्त्रितम् ।
शस्त्रधारणमत्युग्रं तच्च कार्यं कृतं त्वया ॥१२॥
12. idaṁ nimitte kasmiṁścidasmābhirupamantritam ,
śastradhāraṇamatyugraṁ tacca kāryaṁ kṛtaṁ tvayā.
12. idam nimitte kasmin cit asmābhiḥ upamantritam
śastradhāraṇam atyugram tat ca kāryam kṛtam tvayā
12. nimitte kasmin cit idam atyugram śastradhāraṇam asmābhiḥ upamantritam; ca tat kāryam tvayā kṛtam.
12. This very fierce bearing of weapons was urged by us for a certain purpose, and that very task has been accomplished by you.
वत्स पर्याप्तमेतावद्भीष्मेण सह संयुगे ।
विमर्दस्ते महाबाहो व्यपयाहि रणादितः ॥१३॥
13. vatsa paryāptametāvadbhīṣmeṇa saha saṁyuge ,
vimardaste mahābāho vyapayāhi raṇāditaḥ.
13. vatsa paryāptam etāvat bhīṣmeṇa saha saṃyuge
vimardaḥ te mahābāho vyapayāhi raṇāt itaḥ
13. vatsa,
mahābāho,
bhīṣmeṇa saha saṃyuge etāvat te vimardaḥ paryāptam.
itaḥ raṇāt vyapayāhi.
13. O child, O mighty-armed one, this much struggle (vimarda) with Bhishma in battle (saṃyuga) is sufficient for you. Depart from this battlefield!
पर्याप्तमेतद्भद्रं ते तव कार्मुकधारणम् ।
विसर्जयैतद्दुर्धर्ष तपस्तप्यस्व भार्गव ॥१४॥
14. paryāptametadbhadraṁ te tava kārmukadhāraṇam ,
visarjayaitaddurdharṣa tapastapyasva bhārgava.
14. paryāptam etat bhadram te tava kārmukadhāraṇam
visarjaya etat durdharṣa tapas tapyasva bhārgava
14. durdharṣa bhārgava,
te tava etat kārmukadhāraṇam bhadram paryāptam.
etat visarjaya,
tapas tapyasva.
14. O unconquerable (durgharṣa) descendant of Bhrigu (bhārgava), this much of your wielding the bow (kārmukadhāraṇam) is sufficient for your well-being (bhadra). Lay aside this (bow), and perform asceticism (tapas).
एष भीष्मः शांतनवो देवैः सर्वैर्निवारितः ।
निवर्तस्व रणादस्मादिति चैव प्रचोदितः ॥१५॥
15. eṣa bhīṣmaḥ śāṁtanavo devaiḥ sarvairnivāritaḥ ,
nivartasva raṇādasmāditi caiva pracoditaḥ.
15. eṣaḥ bhīṣmaḥ śāntanavaḥ devaiḥ sarvaiḥ nivāritaḥ
nivartasva raṇāt asmāt iti ca eva pracoditaḥ
15. eṣaḥ śāntanavaḥ bhīṣmaḥ sarvaiḥ devaiḥ nivāritaḥ
ca asmāt raṇāt nivartasva iti eva pracoditaḥ
15. This Bhishma, the son of Shantanu, was prevented by all the gods and urged, "Turn back from this battle!"
रामेण सह मा योत्सीर्गुरुणेति पुनः पुनः ।
न हि रामो रणे जेतुं त्वया न्याय्यः कुरूद्वह ।
मानं कुरुष्व गाङ्गेय ब्राह्मणस्य रणाजिरे ॥१६॥
16. rāmeṇa saha mā yotsīrguruṇeti punaḥ punaḥ ,
na hi rāmo raṇe jetuṁ tvayā nyāyyaḥ kurūdvaha ,
mānaṁ kuruṣva gāṅgeya brāhmaṇasya raṇājire.
16. rāmeṇa saha mā yotsīḥ guruṇā iti
punaḥ punaḥ na hi rāmaḥ raṇe jetum
tvayā nyāyyaḥ kurūdvaha mānam
kuruṣva gāṅgeya brāhmaṇasya raṇājire
16. punaḥ punaḥ rāmeṇa saha guruṇā mā
yotsīḥ iti hi kurūdvaha rāmaḥ
tvayā raṇe jetum na nyāyyaḥ gāṅgeya
raṇājire brāhmaṇasya mānam kuruṣva
16. "Do not fight with Rama, your teacher (guru)," they pleaded again and again. "Indeed, O chief of the Kurus, Rama is not fit to be conquered by you in battle. O son of Ganga, show respect to the brahmin on the battlefield."
वयं तु गुरवस्तुभ्यं ततस्त्वां वारयामहे ।
भीष्मो वसूनामन्यतमो दिष्ट्या जीवसि पुत्रक ॥१७॥
17. vayaṁ tu guravastubhyaṁ tatastvāṁ vārayāmahe ,
bhīṣmo vasūnāmanyatamo diṣṭyā jīvasi putraka.
17. vayam tu guravaḥ tubhyam tataḥ tvām vārayāmahe
bhīṣmaḥ vasūnām anyatamaḥ diṣṭyā jīvasi putraka
17. tu vayam tubhyam guravaḥ tataḥ tvām vārayāmahe
bhīṣmaḥ vasūnām anyatamaḥ putrak diṣṭyā jīvasi
17. But we are your teachers (gurus); therefore, we restrain you. Bhishma is one of the Vasus; fortunately, you are alive, my son!
गाङ्गेयः शंतनोः पुत्रो वसुरेष महायशाः ।
कथं त्वया रणे जेतुं राम शक्यो निवर्त वै ॥१८॥
18. gāṅgeyaḥ śaṁtanoḥ putro vasureṣa mahāyaśāḥ ,
kathaṁ tvayā raṇe jetuṁ rāma śakyo nivarta vai.
18. gāṅgeyaḥ śantanoḥ putraḥ vasuḥ eṣaḥ mahāyaśāḥ
katham tvayā raṇe jetum rāma śakyaḥ nivarta vai
18. eṣaḥ gāṅgeyaḥ śantanoḥ putraḥ mahāyaśāḥ vasuḥ
rāmaḥ tvayā raṇe jetum katham śakyaḥ vai nivarta
18. This son of Shantanu, Bhishma, is a Vasu of great renown. How can Rama be conquered by you in battle? Do turn back!
अर्जुनः पाण्डवश्रेष्ठः पुरंदरसुतो बली ।
नरः प्रजापतिर्वीरः पूर्वदेवः सनातनः ॥१९॥
19. arjunaḥ pāṇḍavaśreṣṭhaḥ puraṁdarasuto balī ,
naraḥ prajāpatirvīraḥ pūrvadevaḥ sanātanaḥ.
19. Arjunaḥ Pāṇḍavaśreṣṭhaḥ Purandarasutaḥ balī
naraḥ prajāpatiḥ vīraḥ pūrvadevaḥ sanātanaḥ
19. Arjunaḥ Pāṇḍavaśreṣṭhaḥ Purandarasutaḥ balī
naraḥ prajāpatiḥ vīraḥ pūrvadevaḥ sanātanaḥ
19. Arjuna, the foremost of the Pāṇḍavas, the mighty son of Purandara (Indra), is indeed a man, a lord of creatures, a hero, a primordial god, and eternal.
सव्यसाचीति विख्यातस्त्रिषु लोकेषु वीर्यवान् ।
भीष्ममृत्युर्यथाकालं विहितो वै स्वयंभुवा ॥२०॥
20. savyasācīti vikhyātastriṣu lokeṣu vīryavān ,
bhīṣmamṛtyuryathākālaṁ vihito vai svayaṁbhuvā.
20. savyasācī iti vikhyātaḥ triṣu lokeṣu vīryavān
bhīṣmamṛtyuḥ yathākālam vihitaḥ vai svayaṃbhuvā
20. savyasācī iti vikhyātaḥ triṣu lokeṣu vīryavān
bhīṣmamṛtyuḥ yathākālam vai svayaṃbhuvā vihitaḥ
20. He is renowned in the three worlds as Savyasācī (ambidextrous) and is valorous. Indeed, Bhīṣma's death was ordained by the Self-existent (Brahma) at the proper time.
एवमुक्तः स पितृभिः पितॄन्रामोऽब्रवीदिदम् ।
नाहं युधि निवर्तेयमिति मे व्रतमाहितम् ॥२१॥
21. evamuktaḥ sa pitṛbhiḥ pitṝnrāmo'bravīdidam ,
nāhaṁ yudhi nivarteyamiti me vratamāhitam.
21. evam uktaḥ saḥ pitṛbhiḥ pitṝn Rāmaḥ abravīt idam
na aham yudhi nivarteya iti me vratam āhitam
21. evam pitṛbhiḥ uktaḥ saḥ Rāmaḥ idam pitṝn abravīt
na aham yudhi nivarteya iti me vratam āhitam
21. Thus addressed by his ancestors (pitṛ), Rāma spoke this to them: 'I shall not retreat from battle (yudhi) – this is my vow (vrata) that has been taken.'
न निवर्तितपूर्वं च कदाचिद्रणमूर्धनि ।
निवर्त्यतामापगेयः कामं युद्धात्पितामहाः ।
न त्वहं विनिवर्तिष्ये युद्धादस्मात्कथंचन ॥२२॥
22. na nivartitapūrvaṁ ca kadācidraṇamūrdhani ,
nivartyatāmāpageyaḥ kāmaṁ yuddhātpitāmahāḥ ,
na tvahaṁ vinivartiṣye yuddhādasmātkathaṁcana.
22. na nivartitapūrvaṃ ca kadācit
raṇamūrdhani nivartyatām āpageyaḥ kāmam
yuddhāt pitāmahāḥ na tu aham
vinivartiṣye yuddhāt asmāt kathaṃcana
22. ca kadācit raṇamūrdhani na
nivartitapūrvaṃ pitāmahāḥ kāmam āpageyaḥ
yuddhāt nivartyatām tu aham asmāt
yuddhāt kathaṃcana na vinivartiṣye
22. And I have never retreated from the forefront of battle (raṇamūrdhani) at any time. O grandfathers (pitāmahāḥ), let the son of the river (Āpageya, i.e., Bhīṣma) indeed be turned back from battle (yuddha), but I, by no means, shall ever retreat from this battle.
ततस्ते मुनयो राजन्नृचीकप्रमुखास्तदा ।
नारदेनैव सहिताः समागम्येदमब्रुवन् ॥२३॥
23. tataste munayo rājannṛcīkapramukhāstadā ,
nāradenaiva sahitāḥ samāgamyedamabruvan.
23. tataḥ te munayaḥ rājan ṛcīkapramukhāḥ tadā
nāradena eva sahitāḥ samāgamya idam abruvan
23. tataḥ rājan te ṛcīkapramukhāḥ nāradena eva
sahitāḥ munayaḥ tadā samāgamya idam abruvan
23. Then, O King, those sages, headed by Ṛcīka, accompanied by Nārada himself, assembled and spoke these words.
निवर्तस्व रणात्तात मानयस्व द्विजोत्तमान् ।
नेत्यवोचमहं तांश्च क्षत्रधर्मव्यपेक्षया ॥२४॥
24. nivartasva raṇāttāta mānayasva dvijottamān ,
netyavocamahaṁ tāṁśca kṣatradharmavyapekṣayā.
24. nivartasva raṇāt tāta mānayasva dvijottamān na
iti avocam aham tān ca kṣatradharmavyapekṣayā
24. tāta raṇāt nivartasva ca dvijottamān mānayasva
aham ca kṣatradharmavyapekṣayā tān na iti avocam
24. "Withdraw from battle, dear one, and honor the most excellent among the brahmins." But I replied "No" to them, due to my regard for the natural law (dharma) of a warrior.
मम व्रतमिदं लोके नाहं युद्धात्कथंचन ।
विमुखो विनिवर्तेयं पृष्ठतोऽभ्याहतः शरैः ॥२५॥
25. mama vratamidaṁ loke nāhaṁ yuddhātkathaṁcana ,
vimukho vinivarteyaṁ pṛṣṭhato'bhyāhataḥ śaraiḥ.
25. mama vratam idam loke na aham yuddhāt kathaṃcana
vimukhaḥ vinivarteyam pṛṣṭhataḥ abhyāhataḥ śaraiḥ
25. loke idam mama vratam.
aham yuddhāt kathaṃcana pṛṣṭhataḥ śaraiḥ abhyāhataḥ vimukhaḥ na vinivarteyam
25. This is my vow in this world: I shall never retreat from battle, by no means, not even if struck by arrows from behind.
नाहं लोभान्न कार्पण्यान्न भयान्नार्थकारणात् ।
त्यजेयं शाश्वतं धर्ममिति मे निश्चिता मतिः ॥२६॥
26. nāhaṁ lobhānna kārpaṇyānna bhayānnārthakāraṇāt ,
tyajeyaṁ śāśvataṁ dharmamiti me niścitā matiḥ.
26. na aham lobhāt na kārpaṇyāt na bhayāt na arthakāraṇāt
tyajeyam śāśvatam dharmam iti me niścitā matiḥ
26. aham lobhāt na,
kārpaṇyāt na,
bhayāt na,
arthakāraṇāt na śāśvatam dharmam tyajeyam.
iti me niścitā matiḥ
26. I would not abandon my eternal natural law (dharma) out of greed, nor out of cowardice, nor out of fear, nor for the sake of material gain. Such is my firm resolve.
ततस्ते मुनयः सर्वे नारदप्रमुखा नृप ।
भागीरथी च मे माता रणमध्यं प्रपेदिरे ॥२७॥
27. tataste munayaḥ sarve nāradapramukhā nṛpa ,
bhāgīrathī ca me mātā raṇamadhyaṁ prapedire.
27. tataḥ te munayaḥ sarve nāradapramukhāḥ nṛpa
bhāgīrathī ca me mātā raṇamadhyam prapedire
27. nṛpa tataḥ te nāradapramukhāḥ sarve munayaḥ
ca me mātā bhāgīrathī raṇamadhyam prapedire
27. Then, O king, all those sages, headed by Nārada, and my mother Bhāgīrathī, entered the midst of the battlefield.
तथैवात्तशरो धन्वी तथैव दृढनिश्चयः ।
स्थितोऽहमाहवे योद्धुं ततस्ते राममब्रुवन् ।
समेत्य सहिता भूयः समरे भृगुनन्दनम् ॥२८॥
28. tathaivāttaśaro dhanvī tathaiva dṛḍhaniścayaḥ ,
sthito'hamāhave yoddhuṁ tataste rāmamabruvan ,
sametya sahitā bhūyaḥ samare bhṛgunandanam.
28. tathā eva āttaśaraḥ dhanvī tathā eva
dṛḍhaniścayaḥ sthitaḥ aham āhave
yoddhum tataḥ te rāmam abruvan sametya
sahitāḥ bhūyaḥ samare bhṛgunandanam
28. tathā eva āttaśaraḥ dhanvī tathā eva
dṛḍhaniścayaḥ aham yoddhum āhave
sthitaḥ tataḥ te sametya sahitāḥ bhūyaḥ
samare rāmam bhṛgunandanam abruvan
28. And so, I stood in battle, having taken up my arrows, a resolute archer, determined to fight. Then, having reunited on the battlefield, they spoke to Rāma, the son of Bhṛgu.
नावनीतं हि हृदयं विप्राणां शाम्य भार्गव ।
राम राम निवर्तस्व युद्धादस्माद्द्विजोत्तम ।
अवध्यो हि त्वया भीष्मस्त्वं च भीष्मस्य भार्गव ॥२९॥
29. nāvanītaṁ hi hṛdayaṁ viprāṇāṁ śāmya bhārgava ,
rāma rāma nivartasva yuddhādasmāddvijottama ,
avadhyo hi tvayā bhīṣmastvaṁ ca bhīṣmasya bhārgava.
29. na avanītam hi hṛdayam viprāṇām śāmya
bhārgava rāma rāma nivartasva yuddhāt
asmāt dvijottama avadhyaḥ hi tvayā
bhīṣmaḥ tvam ca bhīṣmasya bhārgava
29. bhārgava viprāṇām hṛdayam hi na avanītam
śāmya rāma rāma dvijottama asmāt yuddhāt
nivartasva hi tvayā bhīṣmaḥ avadhyaḥ
ca bhārgava tvam bhīṣmasya [avadhyaḥ]
29. O son of Bhṛgu, the hearts of brāhmins are indeed not to be softened. Be calm! O Rāma, Rāma, O best among the twice-born, desist from this battle! Indeed, Bhīṣma cannot be killed by you, and you, O son of Bhṛgu, cannot be killed by Bhīṣma.
एवं ब्रुवन्तस्ते सर्वे प्रतिरुध्य रणाजिरम् ।
न्यासयां चक्रिरे शस्त्रं पितरो भृगुनन्दनम् ॥३०॥
30. evaṁ bruvantaste sarve pratirudhya raṇājiram ,
nyāsayāṁ cakrire śastraṁ pitaro bhṛgunandanam.
30. evam bruvantaḥ te sarve pratirudhya raṇājiram
nyāsayām cakrire śastram pitaraḥ bhṛgunandanam
30. evam bruvantaḥ te sarve pitaraḥ raṇājiram
pratirudhya bhṛgunandanam śastram nyāsayām cakrire
30. Thus speaking, all those revered sages, having obstructed the battlefield, caused the son of Bhṛgu (Paraśurāma) to lay down his weapon.
ततोऽहं पुनरेवाथ तानष्टौ ब्रह्मवादिनः ।
अद्राक्षं दीप्यमानान्वै ग्रहानष्टाविवोदितान् ॥३१॥
31. tato'haṁ punarevātha tānaṣṭau brahmavādinaḥ ,
adrākṣaṁ dīpyamānānvai grahānaṣṭāvivoditān.
31. tataḥ ahaṃ punaḥ eva atha tān aṣṭau brahmavādinaḥ
adrākṣam dīpyamānān vai grahān aṣṭau iva uditān
31. atha tataḥ ahaṃ punaḥ eva tān aṣṭau brahmavādinaḥ
aṣṭau uditān grahān iva dīpyamānān vai adrākṣam
31. Then, I again saw those eight brahmavādin (expounders of sacred texts), shining brilliantly like eight risen planets, indeed.
ते मां सप्रणयं वाक्यमब्रुवन्समरे स्थितम् ।
प्रैहि रामं महाबाहो गुरुं लोकहितं कुरु ॥३२॥
32. te māṁ sapraṇayaṁ vākyamabruvansamare sthitam ,
praihi rāmaṁ mahābāho guruṁ lokahitaṁ kuru.
32. te mām sapraṇayam vākyam abruvan samare sthitam
pra-ihi rāmam mahābāho gurum lokahitam kuru
32. samare sthitam mām te sapraṇayam vākyam abruvan.
(bho) mahābāho,
rāmam pra-ihi,
(tām) lokahitam gurum kuru.
32. They spoke affectionate words to me, who was standing in battle: 'O mighty-armed one, go to Rama and make him a guru (teacher) beneficial to the world.'
दृष्ट्वा निवर्तितं रामं सुहृद्वाक्येन तेन वै ।
लोकानां च हितं कुर्वन्नहमप्याददे वचः ॥३३॥
33. dṛṣṭvā nivartitaṁ rāmaṁ suhṛdvākyena tena vai ,
lokānāṁ ca hitaṁ kurvannahamapyādade vacaḥ.
33. dṛṣṭvā nivartitam rāmam suhṛdvākyena tena vai
lokānām ca hitam kurvan aham api ādadhe vacaḥ
33. tena suhṛdvākyena rāmam nivartitam dṛṣṭvā,
lokānām hitam ca kurvan aham api vai vacaḥ ādadhe.
33. Having seen Rama turned back by those words of his friends, and while also working for the welfare of the people, I, too, accepted their command, indeed.
ततोऽहं राममासाद्य ववन्दे भृशविक्षतः ।
रामश्चाभ्युत्स्मयन्प्रेम्णा मामुवाच महातपाः ॥३४॥
34. tato'haṁ rāmamāsādya vavande bhṛśavikṣataḥ ,
rāmaścābhyutsmayanpremṇā māmuvāca mahātapāḥ.
34. tataḥ aham rāmam āsādya vavande bhṛśavikṣataḥ
rāmaḥ ca abhyutsmayan premṇā mām uvāca mahātapāḥ
34. tataḥ aham bhṛśavikṣataḥ rāmam āsaādya vavande.
ca mahātapāḥ rāmaḥ premṇā abhyutsmayan mām uvāca.
34. Then, greatly wounded, I approached Rama and bowed. And Rama, the great ascetic (tapas), smiling affectionately, spoke to me.
त्वत्समो नास्ति लोकेऽस्मिन्क्षत्रियः पृथिवीचरः ।
गम्यतां भीष्म युद्धेऽस्मिंस्तोषितोऽहं भृशं त्वया ॥३५॥
35. tvatsamo nāsti loke'sminkṣatriyaḥ pṛthivīcaraḥ ,
gamyatāṁ bhīṣma yuddhe'smiṁstoṣito'haṁ bhṛśaṁ tvayā.
35. tvatsamaḥ na asti loke asmin kṣatriyaḥ pṛthivīcaraḥ
gamyatām bhīṣma yuddhe asmin toṣitaḥ aham bhṛśam tvayā
35. bhīṣma,
asmin loke asmin pṛthivīcaraḥ kṣatriyaḥ tvatsamaḥ na asti.
asmin yuddhe gamyatām.
aham tvayā bhṛśam toṣitaḥ.
35. There is no warrior roaming this earth in this world who is your equal. O Bhishma, proceed in this battle; I am greatly pleased by you.
मम चैव समक्षं तां कन्यामाहूय भार्गवः ।
उवाच दीनया वाचा मध्ये तेषां तपस्विनाम् ॥३६॥
36. mama caiva samakṣaṁ tāṁ kanyāmāhūya bhārgavaḥ ,
uvāca dīnayā vācā madhye teṣāṁ tapasvinām.
36. mama ca eva samakṣam tām kanyām āhūya bhārgavah
uvāca dīnayā vācā madhye teṣām tapasvinām
36. ca eva bhārgavah mama samakṣam tām kanyām āhūya,
teṣām tapasvinām madhye dīnayā vācā uvāca.
36. And indeed, in my very presence, Bhargava, having called that girl, spoke with a piteous voice among those ascetics.
