भीष्म उवाच ।
ततोऽहं निशि राजेन्द्र प्रणम्य शिरसा तदा ।
ब्राह्मणानां पितॄणां च देवतानां च सर्वशः ॥१॥
1. bhīṣma uvāca ,
tato'haṁ niśi rājendra praṇamya śirasā tadā ,
brāhmaṇānāṁ pitṝṇāṁ ca devatānāṁ ca sarvaśaḥ.
नक्तंचराणां भूतानां रजन्याश्च विशां पते ।
शयनं प्राप्य रहिते मनसा समचिन्तयम् ॥२॥
2. naktaṁcarāṇāṁ bhūtānāṁ rajanyāśca viśāṁ pate ,
śayanaṁ prāpya rahite manasā samacintayam.
जामदग्न्येन मे युद्धमिदं परमदारुणम् ।
अहानि सुबहून्यद्य वर्तते सुमहात्ययम् ॥३॥
3. jāmadagnyena me yuddhamidaṁ paramadāruṇam ,
ahāni subahūnyadya vartate sumahātyayam.
न च रामं महावीर्यं शक्नोमि रणमूर्धनि ।
विजेतुं समरे विप्रं जामदग्न्यं महाबलम् ॥४॥
4. na ca rāmaṁ mahāvīryaṁ śaknomi raṇamūrdhani ,
vijetuṁ samare vipraṁ jāmadagnyaṁ mahābalam.
4. na ca rāmam mahāvīryam śaknomi raṇamūrdhani
vijetum samare vipram jāmadagnyam mahābalam
4. [aham] vipram jāmadagnyam mahābalam ca na
raṇamūrdhani samare mahāvīryam rāmam vijetum śaknomi
4. And I, the exceedingly powerful Brahmin, son of Jamadagni (Parashurama), am unable to conquer the greatly valorous Rāma in the forefront of battle.
यदि शक्यो मया जेतुं जामदग्न्यः प्रतापवान् ।
दैवतानि प्रसन्नानि दर्शयन्तु निशां मम ॥५॥
5. yadi śakyo mayā jetuṁ jāmadagnyaḥ pratāpavān ,
daivatāni prasannāni darśayantu niśāṁ mama.
5. yadi śakyaḥ mayā jetum jāmadagnyaḥ pratāpavān
devatāni prasannāni darśayantu niśām mama
5. yadi mayā pratāpavān jāmadagnyaḥ jetum śakyaḥ [asti],
[tadā] prasannāni devatāni mama niśām darśayantu
5. If the glorious son of Jamadagni (Parashurama) can be conquered by me, then may the propitious deities show me the night (as a sign).
ततोऽहं निशि राजेन्द्र प्रसुप्तः शरविक्षतः ।
दक्षिणेनैव पार्श्वेन प्रभातसमये इव ॥६॥
6. tato'haṁ niśi rājendra prasuptaḥ śaravikṣataḥ ,
dakṣiṇenaiva pārśvena prabhātasamaye iva.
6. tataḥ aham niśi rājendra prasuptaḥ śaravikṣataḥ
dakṣiṇena eva pārśvena prabhātasamaye iva
6. rājendra tataḥ aham niśi prasuptaḥ śaravikṣataḥ
dakṣiṇena eva pārśvena prabhātasamaye iva [āsam]
6. Then, O king of kings (Janaka), in the night I (saw myself) asleep, wounded by arrows, lying truly on my right side, as if it were dawn.
ततोऽहं विप्रमुख्यैस्तैर्यैरस्मि पतितो रथात् ।
उत्थापितो धृतश्चैव मा भैरिति च सान्त्वितः ॥७॥
7. tato'haṁ vipramukhyaistairyairasmi patito rathāt ,
utthāpito dhṛtaścaiva mā bhairiti ca sāntvitaḥ.
7. tataḥ aham vipramukhyaiḥ taiḥ yaiḥ asmi patitaḥ rathāt
utthāpitaḥ dhṛtaḥ ca eva mā bhaiḥ iti ca sāntvitaḥ
7. tataḥ aham yaiḥ taiḥ vipramukhyaiḥ rathāt patitaḥ asmi,
utthāpitaḥ dhṛtaḥ ca eva,
"mā bhaiḥ" iti ca sāntvitaḥ [asmi]
7. Then I was raised up and indeed supported by those chief Brahmins, by whom I had fallen from the chariot, and I was consoled with the words, 'Do not fear!'
त एव मां महाराज स्वप्नदर्शनमेत्य वै ।
परिवार्याब्रुवन्वाक्यं तन्निबोध कुरूद्वह ॥८॥
8. ta eva māṁ mahārāja svapnadarśanametya vai ,
parivāryābruvanvākyaṁ tannibodha kurūdvaha.
8. ta eva mām mahārāja svapnadarśanam etya vai
parivārya abruvan vākyam tat nibodha kurūdvaha
8. mahārāja kurūdvaha ta eva mām svapnadarśanam
etya vai parivārya vākyam abruvan tat nibodha
8. O great king, O best of the Kurus, they themselves came to me in a dream, surrounded me, and spoke words; listen to that.
उत्तिष्ठ मा भैर्गाङ्गेय भयं ते नास्ति किंचन ।
रक्षामहे नरव्याघ्र स्वशरीरं हि नो भवान् ॥९॥
9. uttiṣṭha mā bhairgāṅgeya bhayaṁ te nāsti kiṁcana ,
rakṣāmahe naravyāghra svaśarīraṁ hi no bhavān.
9. uttiṣṭha mā bhaiḥ gāṅgeya bhayam te na asti kiṃcana
rakṣāmahe naravyāghra svaśarīram hi naḥ bhavān
9. gāṅgeya naravyāghra uttiṣṭha mā bhaiḥ te kiṃcana
bhayam na asti hi naḥ bhavān svaśarīram rakṣāmahe
9. Arise, O son of Ganga (Gāṅgeya)! Do not fear! You have no cause for fear whatsoever. O tiger among men (naravyāghra), we shall protect you, for you are indeed our own body.
न त्वां रामो रणे जेता जामदग्न्यः कथंचन ।
त्वमेव समरे रामं विजेता भरतर्षभ ॥१०॥
10. na tvāṁ rāmo raṇe jetā jāmadagnyaḥ kathaṁcana ,
tvameva samare rāmaṁ vijetā bharatarṣabha.
10. na tvām rāmaḥ raṇe jetā jāmadagnyaḥ kathaṃcana
tvam eva samare rāmam vijetā bharatarṣabha
10. bharatarṣabha jāmadagnyaḥ rāmaḥ raṇe tvām
kathaṃcana na jetā tvam eva samare rāmam vijetā
10. Rāma, the son of Jamadagni, will certainly not defeat you in battle. O best of the Bharatas, you yourself will be victorious over Rāma in combat.
इदमस्त्रं सुदयितं प्रत्यभिज्ञास्यते भवान् ।
विदितं हि तवाप्येतत्पूर्वस्मिन्देहधारणे ॥११॥
11. idamastraṁ sudayitaṁ pratyabhijñāsyate bhavān ,
viditaṁ hi tavāpyetatpūrvasmindehadhāraṇe.
11. idam astram sudayitam pratyabhijñāsyate bhavān
viditam hi tava api etat pūrvasmin dehadhāraṇe
11. bhavān idam sudayitam astram pratyabhijñāsyate
hi etat tava api pūrvasmin dehadhāraṇe viditam
11. You will recognize this most beloved weapon, for this was known to you even in a previous embodiment.
प्राजापत्यं विश्वकृतं प्रस्वापं नाम भारत ।
न हीदं वेद रामोऽपि पृथिव्यां वा पुमान्क्वचित् ॥१२॥
12. prājāpatyaṁ viśvakṛtaṁ prasvāpaṁ nāma bhārata ,
na hīdaṁ veda rāmo'pi pṛthivyāṁ vā pumānkvacit.
12. prājāpatyam viśvakṛtam prasvāpam nāma bhārata | na
hi idam veda rāmaḥ api pṛthivyām vā pumān kvacit
12. bhārata prājāpatyam viśvakṛtam prasvāpam nāma idam
hi rāmaḥ api vā pṛthivyām kvacit pumān na veda
12. O Bhārata (Rāma), this universal weapon (astra) belonging to Prajāpati, named Prajvāpa (the deep sleep), indeed, neither you, Rāma, nor any other man on earth truly knows it.
तत्स्मरस्व महाबाहो भृशं संयोजयस्व च ।
न च रामः क्षयं गन्ता तेनास्त्रेण नराधिप ॥१३॥
13. tatsmarasva mahābāho bhṛśaṁ saṁyojayasva ca ,
na ca rāmaḥ kṣayaṁ gantā tenāstreṇa narādhipa.
13. tat smarasva mahābāho bhṛśam saṃyojayasva ca |
na ca rāmaḥ kṣayam gantā tena astreṇa narādhipa
13. mahābāho tat smarasva ca bhṛśam saṃyojayasva
narādhipa ca tena astreṇa rāmaḥ kṣayam na gantā
13. O mighty-armed one (mahābāho), remember that (weapon) and employ it vigorously. And that Rāma (Paraśurāma), O king of men (narādhipa), will not meet destruction by that weapon (astra).
एनसा च न योगं त्वं प्राप्स्यसे जातु मानद ।
स्वप्स्यते जामदग्न्योऽसौ त्वद्बाणबलपीडितः ॥१४॥
14. enasā ca na yogaṁ tvaṁ prāpsyase jātu mānada ,
svapsyate jāmadagnyo'sau tvadbāṇabalapīḍitaḥ.
14. enasā ca na yogam tvam prāpsyase jātu mānada |
svapsyate jāmadagnyaḥ asau tvat bāṇa bala pīḍitaḥ
14. ca mānada tvam enasā jātu yogam na prāpsyase asau
jāmadagnyaḥ tvat bāṇa bala pīḍitaḥ svapsyate
14. And, O giver of honor (mānada), you will never incur any sin (enas) by this (action). That son of Jamadagni (jāmadagnya), afflicted by the power of your arrows, will (merely) sleep.
ततो जित्वा त्वमेवैनं पुनरुत्थापयिष्यसि ।
अस्त्रेण दयितेनाजौ भीष्म संबोधनेन वै ॥१५॥
15. tato jitvā tvamevainaṁ punarutthāpayiṣyasi ,
astreṇa dayitenājau bhīṣma saṁbodhanena vai.
15. tataḥ jitvā tvam eva enam punaḥ utthāpayiṣyasi
| astreṇa dayitena ājau bhīṣmam saṃbodhanena vai
15. tataḥ tvam enam jitvā eva punaḥ utthāpayiṣyasi
ājau dayitena astreṇa vai bhīṣmam saṃbodhanena
15. Then, having conquered him, you yourself will raise him up again, in battle, by that dear weapon (astra), indeed, by addressing the formidable one (Paraśurāma).
एवं कुरुष्व कौरव्य प्रभाते रथमास्थितः ।
प्रसुप्तं वा मृतं वापि तुल्यं मन्यामहे वयम् ॥१६॥
16. evaṁ kuruṣva kauravya prabhāte rathamāsthitaḥ ,
prasuptaṁ vā mṛtaṁ vāpi tulyaṁ manyāmahe vayam.
16. evaṃ kuruṣva kauravya prabhāte ratham āsthitaḥ |
prasuptaṃ vā mṛtaṃ vā api tulyaṃ manyāmahe vayam
16. kauravya tvam evaṃ prabhāte ratham āsthitaḥ kuruṣva
vayam prasuptaṃ vā mṛtaṃ vā api tulyaṃ manyāmahe
16. O descendant of Kuru, you should do this tomorrow morning, mounted on your chariot. We consider one who is asleep or even dead to be one and the same.
न च रामेण मर्तव्यं कदाचिदपि पार्थिव ।
ततः समुत्पन्नमिदं प्रस्वापं युज्यतामिति ॥१७॥
17. na ca rāmeṇa martavyaṁ kadācidapi pārthiva ,
tataḥ samutpannamidaṁ prasvāpaṁ yujyatāmiti.
17. na ca rāmeṇa martavyam kadācit api pārthiva |
tataḥ samutpannam idam prasvāpam yujyatām iti
17. pārthiva,
ca rāmeṇa kadācit api na martavyam tataḥ idam samutpannam prasvāpam iti yujyatām
17. And O King, Rama is never to die. Therefore, let this deep sleep (prasvāpa) be invoked upon him.
इत्युक्त्वान्तर्हिता राजन्सर्व एव द्विजोत्तमाः ।
अष्टौ सदृशरूपास्ते सर्वे भास्वरमूर्तयः ॥१८॥
18. ityuktvāntarhitā rājansarva eva dvijottamāḥ ,
aṣṭau sadṛśarūpāste sarve bhāsvaramūrtayaḥ.
18. iti uktvā antarhitāḥ rājan sarve eva dvijottamāḥ
| aṣṭau sadṛśarūpāḥ te sarve bhāsvaramūrtayaḥ
18. rājan,
iti uktvā,
sarve eva te aṣṭau dvijottamāḥ antarhitāḥ te sarve sadṛśarūpāḥ bhāsvaramūrtayaḥ (āsan)
18. Having spoken thus, all those excellent brahmins (dvijottama) vanished, O King. All eight of them possessed similar forms and radiant bodies.
