युध्यतामेव तेषां तु भास्करेऽस्तमुपागते ।
संध्या समभवद्घोरा नापश्याम ततो रणम् ॥१॥

1. Sañjaya said: As they were indeed fighting, with the sun having set, a dreadful twilight (saṃdhyā) arose. Thereafter, we could no longer see the battle.
ततो युधिष्ठिरो राजा संध्यां संदृश्य भारत ।
वध्यमानं बलं चापि भीष्मेणामित्रघातिना ॥२॥
2. tato yudhiṣṭhiro rājā saṁdhyāṁ saṁdṛśya bhārata ,
vadhyamānaṁ balaṁ cāpi bhīṣmeṇāmitraghātinā.

2. O descendant of Bharata, then King Yudhishthira, having observed the twilight (saṃdhyā) and also his army being decimated by Bhishma, the slayer of foes...
मुक्तशस्त्रं परावृत्तं पलायनपरायणम् ।
भीष्मं च युधि संरब्धमनुयान्तं महारथान् ॥३॥
3. muktaśastraṁ parāvṛttaṁ palāyanaparāyaṇam ,
bhīṣmaṁ ca yudhi saṁrabdhamanuyāntaṁ mahārathān.

3. And perceiving Bhishma, who, though he had abandoned his weapons, turned away, and was intent on flight, was nevertheless enraged in battle and pursuing the great charioteers.
सोमकांश्च जितान्दृष्ट्वा निरुत्साहान्महारथान् ।
चिन्तयित्वा चिरं ध्यात्वा अवहारमरोचयत् ॥४॥
4. somakāṁśca jitāndṛṣṭvā nirutsāhānmahārathān ,
cintayitvā ciraṁ dhyātvā avahāramarocayat.

4. Having seen the Somakas and the great charioteers (of the Pandava side) defeated and disheartened, and having reflected and meditated for a long time, he (Yudhishthira) decided upon a withdrawal.
ततोऽवहारं सैन्यानां चक्रे राजा युधिष्ठिरः ।
तथैव तव सैन्यानामवहारो ह्यभूत्तदा ॥५॥
5. tato'vahāraṁ sainyānāṁ cakre rājā yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ,
tathaiva tava sainyānāmavahāro hyabhūttadā.
5. tataḥ avahāram sainyānām cakre rājā yudhiṣṭhiraḥ
tatha eva tava sainyānām avahāraḥ hi abhūt tadā

5. Then King Yudhishthira ordered a withdrawal of his armies. Similarly, at that time, there was indeed a withdrawal of your (Kaurava) armies as well.
ततोऽवहारं सैन्यानां कृत्वा तत्र महारथाः ।
न्यविशन्त कुरुश्रेष्ठ संग्रामे क्षतविक्षताः ॥६॥
6. tato'vahāraṁ sainyānāṁ kṛtvā tatra mahārathāḥ ,
nyaviśanta kuruśreṣṭha saṁgrāme kṣatavikṣatāḥ.
6. tataḥ avahāram sainyānām kṛtvā tatra mahārathāḥ
nyaviśanta kuruśreṣṭha saṃgrāme kṣatavikṣatāḥ
6. tataḥ sainyānām avahāram kṛtvā kuruśreṣṭha tatra
kṣatavikṣatāḥ mahārathāḥ saṃgrāme nyaviśanta
6. Then, having executed the withdrawal of their armies, O best among the Kurus, the great charioteers settled down there, wounded and severely injured from the battle.
भीष्मस्य समरे कर्म चिन्तयानास्तु पाण्डवाः ।
नालभन्त तदा शान्तिं भृशं भीष्मेण पीडिताः ॥७॥
7. bhīṣmasya samare karma cintayānāstu pāṇḍavāḥ ,
nālabhanta tadā śāntiṁ bhṛśaṁ bhīṣmeṇa pīḍitāḥ.
7. bhīṣmasya samare karma cintayānāḥ tu pāṇḍavāḥ na
alabhanata tadā śāntim bhṛśam bhīṣmeṇa pīḍitāḥ

7. The Pandavas, contemplating Bhishma's actions (karma) in battle, could not find peace then, being exceedingly tormented by Bhishma.
भीष्मोऽपि समरे जित्वा पाण्डवान्सह सृञ्जयैः ।
पूज्यमानस्तव सुतैर्वन्द्यमानश्च भारत ॥८॥
8. bhīṣmo'pi samare jitvā pāṇḍavānsaha sṛñjayaiḥ ,
pūjyamānastava sutairvandyamānaśca bhārata.
8. bhīṣmaḥ api samare jitvā pāṇḍavān saha sṛñjayaiḥ
pūjyamānaḥ tava sutaiḥ vandyamānaḥ ca bhārata
8. bhārata bhīṣmaḥ api samare pāṇḍavān sṛñjayaiḥ

8. Bhishma also, having conquered the Pandavas together with the Srinjayas in battle, and being honored by your sons and praised, O Bharata, (then...)
न्यविशत्कुरुभिः सार्धं हृष्टरूपैः समन्ततः ।
ततो रात्रिः समभवत्सर्वभूतप्रमोहिनी ॥९॥
9. nyaviśatkurubhiḥ sārdhaṁ hṛṣṭarūpaiḥ samantataḥ ,
tato rātriḥ samabhavatsarvabhūtapramohinī.
9. ni aviśat kurubhiḥ sārdham hṛṣṭarūpaiḥ samantataḥ
tataḥ rātriḥ samabhavat sarvabhūtapramohinī
9. saḥ hṛṣṭarūpaiḥ kurubhiḥ sārdham samantataḥ ni
aviśat tataḥ sarvabhūtapramohinī rātriḥ samabhavat
9. (Bhishma) sat down with the cheerful-looking Kurus all around. Then, night came, enchanting all beings.
तस्मिन्रात्रिमुखे घोरे पाण्डवा वृष्णिभिः सह ।
सृञ्जयाश्च दुराधर्षा मन्त्राय समुपाविशन् ॥१०॥
10. tasminrātrimukhe ghore pāṇḍavā vṛṣṇibhiḥ saha ,
sṛñjayāśca durādharṣā mantrāya samupāviśan.
10. tasmin rātrimukhe ghore pāṇḍavāḥ vṛṣṇibhiḥ saha
sṛñjayāḥ ca durādharṣāḥ mantrāya samupāviśan
10. ghore tasmin rātrimukhe pāṇḍavāḥ vṛṣṇibhiḥ saha

10. At the dreadful beginning of that night, the Pandavas, along with the Vrishnis and the unassailable Srinjayas, sat down for deliberation (mantra).
आत्मनिःश्रेयसं सर्वे प्राप्तकालं महाबलाः ।
मन्त्रयामासुरव्यग्रा मन्त्रनिश्चयकोविदाः ॥११॥
11. ātmaniḥśreyasaṁ sarve prāptakālaṁ mahābalāḥ ,
mantrayāmāsuravyagrā mantraniścayakovidāḥ.
11. ātmaniḥśreyasam sarve prāptakālam mahābalāḥ
mantrayāmāsuḥ avyagrāḥ mantraniścayakovidāḥ
11. avyagrāḥ mantraniścayakovidāḥ mahābalāḥ sarve
prāptakālam ātmaniḥśreyasam mantrayāmāsuḥ
11. All the mighty ones, calm and skilled in strategic decision-making, deliberated on the opportune course of action for their own ultimate benefit.
ततो युधिष्ठिरो राजा मन्त्रयित्वा चिरं नृप ।
वासुदेवं समुद्वीक्ष्य वाक्यमेतदुवाच ह ॥१२॥
12. tato yudhiṣṭhiro rājā mantrayitvā ciraṁ nṛpa ,
vāsudevaṁ samudvīkṣya vākyametaduvāca ha.
12. tataḥ yudhiṣṭhiraḥ rājā mantrayitvā ciram nṛpa
vāsudevam samudvīkṣya vākyam etat uvāca ha
12. nṛpa tataḥ rājā yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ciram mantrayitvā
vāsudevam samudvīkṣya etat vākyam ha uvāca
12. Thereafter, O king, King Yudhishthira, having deliberated for a long time, looked towards Vasudeva (Krishna) and spoke these words.
पश्य कृष्ण महात्मानं भीष्मं भीमपराक्रमम् ।
गजं नलवनानीव विमृद्नन्तं बलं मम ॥१३॥
13. paśya kṛṣṇa mahātmānaṁ bhīṣmaṁ bhīmaparākramam ,
gajaṁ nalavanānīva vimṛdnantaṁ balaṁ mama.
13. paśya kṛṣṇa mahātmānam bhīṣmam bhīmaparākramam
gajam nalavanāni iva vimṛdnantam balam mama
13. kṛṣṇa paśya! mahātmānam bhīṣmam bhīmaparākramam
mama balam nalavanāni iva gajam vimṛdnantam
13. Behold, O Krishna, the great-souled Bhishma, who possesses dreadful prowess! He is crushing my army like an elephant crushing bamboo forests.
न चैवैनं महात्मानमुत्सहामो निरीक्षितुम् ।
लेलिह्यमानं सैन्येषु प्रवृद्धमिव पावकम् ॥१४॥
14. na caivainaṁ mahātmānamutsahāmo nirīkṣitum ,
lelihyamānaṁ sainyeṣu pravṛddhamiva pāvakam.
14. na ca eva enam mahātmānam utsahāmaḥ nirīkṣitum
lelihyamānam sainyeṣu pravṛddham iva pāvakam
14. ca na eva enam mahātmānam sainyeṣu pravṛddham
pāvakam iva lelihyamānam nirīkṣitum utsahāmaḥ
14. And indeed, we do not even dare to look at him, the great-souled one, as he devours the armies, like a mighty, blazing fire.
यथा घोरो महानागस्तक्षको वै विषोल्बणः ।
तथा भीष्मो रणे कृष्ण तीक्ष्णशस्त्रः प्रतापवान् ॥१५॥
15. yathā ghoro mahānāgastakṣako vai viṣolbaṇaḥ ,
tathā bhīṣmo raṇe kṛṣṇa tīkṣṇaśastraḥ pratāpavān.
15. yathā ghoraḥ mahānāgaḥ takṣakaḥ vai viṣolbaṇaḥ
tathā bhīṣmaḥ raṇe kṛṣṇa tīkṣṇaśastraḥ pratāpavān
15. kṛṣṇa yathā ghoraḥ viṣolbaṇaḥ takṣakaḥ mahānāgaḥ
vai tathā raṇe bhīṣmaḥ tīkṣṇaśastraḥ pratāpavān
15. O Krishna, just as the terrible great serpent Takshaka is indeed highly venomous, so too is Bhishma in battle, with sharp weapons and immense power.
गृहीतचापः समरे विमुञ्चंश्च शिताञ्शरान् ।
शक्यो जेतुं यमः क्रुद्धो वज्रपाणिश्च देवराट् ॥१६॥
16. gṛhītacāpaḥ samare vimuñcaṁśca śitāñśarān ,
śakyo jetuṁ yamaḥ kruddho vajrapāṇiśca devarāṭ.
16. gṛhītacāpaḥ samare vimuñcan ca śitān śarān śakyaḥ
jetum yamaḥ kruddhaḥ vajrapāṇiḥ ca devarāṭ
16. gṛhītacāpaḥ samare śitān śarān vimuñcan ca kruddhaḥ
yamaḥ ca vajrapāṇiḥ devarāṭ ca jetum śakyaḥ
16. Even an enraged Yama, or Indra, the wielder of the thunderbolt and king of gods, can be conquered when they are holding a bow in battle and releasing sharp arrows.
वरुणः पाशभृद्वापि सगदो वा धनेश्वरः ।
न तु भीष्मः सुसंक्रुद्धः शक्यो जेतुं महाहवे ॥१७॥
17. varuṇaḥ pāśabhṛdvāpi sagado vā dhaneśvaraḥ ,
na tu bhīṣmaḥ susaṁkruddhaḥ śakyo jetuṁ mahāhave.
17. varuṇaḥ pāśabhṛt vā api sagadaḥ vā dhaneśvaraḥ na
tu bhīṣmaḥ susaṃkruddhaḥ śakyaḥ jetum mahāhave
17. pāśabhṛt varuṇaḥ vā api sagadaḥ dhaneśvaraḥ vā tu
susaṃkruddhaḥ bhīṣmaḥ mahāhave jetum na śakyaḥ
17. Even Varuna, the bearer of the noose, or Kubera, the lord of wealth, with his mace, can be conquered. But Bhishma, when greatly enraged, cannot be conquered in a great battle.
सोऽहमेवं गते कृष्ण निमग्नः शोकसागरे ।
आत्मनो बुद्धिदौर्बल्याद्भीष्ममासाद्य संयुगे ॥१८॥
18. so'hamevaṁ gate kṛṣṇa nimagnaḥ śokasāgare ,
ātmano buddhidaurbalyādbhīṣmamāsādya saṁyuge.
18. saḥ aham evam gate kṛṣṇa nimagnaḥ śokasāgare
ātmanaḥ buddhi-daurbalyāt bhīṣmam āsādya saṃyuge
18. kṛṣṇa evam gate saḥ aham ātmanaḥ buddhi-daurbalyāt
saṃyuge bhīṣmam āsādya śokasāgare nimagnaḥ
18. O Krishna, as things have come to this pass, I am plunged into an ocean of sorrow, having encountered Bhishma in battle due to my own weakness of intellect (buddhidaurbalya).
वनं यास्यामि दुर्धर्ष श्रेयो मे तत्र वै गतम् ।
न युद्धं रोचये कृष्ण हन्ति भीष्मो हि नः सदा ॥१९॥
19. vanaṁ yāsyāmi durdharṣa śreyo me tatra vai gatam ,
na yuddhaṁ rocaye kṛṣṇa hanti bhīṣmo hi naḥ sadā.
19. vanam yāsyāmi durdharṣa śreyaḥ me tatra vai gatam
na yuddham rocaye kṛṣṇa hanti bhīṣmaḥ hi naḥ sadā
19. durdharṣa kṛṣṇa vanam yāsyāmi tatra vai me śreyaḥ
gatam yuddham na rocaye hi bhīṣmaḥ sadā naḥ hanti
19. O unconquerable one, I will go to the forest; indeed, my welfare (śreyaḥ) lies there. O Krishna, I do not approve of this war, for Bhishma always slays us.
यथा प्रज्वलितं वह्निं पतंगः समभिद्रवन् ।
एकतो मृत्युमभ्येति तथाहं भीष्ममीयिवान् ॥२०॥
20. yathā prajvalitaṁ vahniṁ pataṁgaḥ samabhidravan ,
ekato mṛtyumabhyeti tathāhaṁ bhīṣmamīyivān.
20. yathā prajvalitam vahnim pataṅgaḥ samabhidravan
ekataḥ mṛtyum abhyeti tathā aham bhīṣmam īyivān
20. yathā pataṅgaḥ prajvalitam vahnim samabhidravan
ekataḥ mṛtyum abhyeti tathā aham bhīṣmam īyivān
20. Just as a moth rushes towards a blazing fire and surely meets death, so have I approached Bhishma.
क्षयं नीतोऽस्मि वार्ष्णेय राज्यहेतोः पराक्रमी ।
भ्रातरश्चैव मे शूराः सायकैर्भृशपीडिताः ॥२१॥
21. kṣayaṁ nīto'smi vārṣṇeya rājyahetoḥ parākramī ,
bhrātaraścaiva me śūrāḥ sāyakairbhṛśapīḍitāḥ.
21. kṣayam nītaḥ asmi vārṣṇeya rājyahetoḥ parākramī
bhrātaraḥ ca eva me śūrāḥ sāyakaiḥ bhṛśapīḍitāḥ
21. vārṣṇeya aham parākramī rājyahetoḥ kṣayam nītaḥ asmi
ca eva me śūrāḥ bhrātaraḥ sāyakaiḥ bhṛśapīḍitāḥ
21. O descendant of Vrishni (Vārṣṇeya), though I am valiant, I have been led to ruin for the sake of the kingdom. And my brave brothers are greatly afflicted by arrows.
मत्कृते भ्रातृसौहार्दाद्राज्यात्प्रभ्रंशनं गताः ।
परिक्लिष्टा तथा कृष्णा मत्कृते मधुसूदन ॥२२॥
22. matkṛte bhrātṛsauhārdādrājyātprabhraṁśanaṁ gatāḥ ,
parikliṣṭā tathā kṛṣṇā matkṛte madhusūdana.
22. matkṛte bhrātṛsauhārdāt rājyāt prabhraṃśanam
gatāḥ parikliṣṭā tathā kṛṣṇā matkṛte madhusūdana
22. madhusūdana matkṛte bhrātṛsauhārdāt rājyāt
prabhraṃśanam gatāḥ tathā matkṛte kṛṣṇā parikliṣṭā
22. For my sake, out of brotherly affection, they have been deprived of the kingdom. And likewise, Krishnaa (Draupadi) is greatly distressed for my sake, O Madhusudana.
जीवितं बहु मन्येऽहं जीवितं ह्यद्य दुर्लभम् ।
जीवितस्याद्य शेषेण चरिष्ये धर्ममुत्तमम् ॥२३॥
23. jīvitaṁ bahu manye'haṁ jīvitaṁ hyadya durlabham ,
jīvitasyādya śeṣeṇa cariṣye dharmamuttamam.
23. jīvitam bahu manye aham jīvitam hi adya durlabham
| jīvitasya adya śeṣeṇa cariṣye dharmam uttamam
23. aham jīvitam bahu manye hi adya jīvitam durlabham
adya jīvitasya śeṣeṇa uttamam dharmam cariṣye
23. I greatly value life; indeed, life is rare these days. With what remains of my life now, I shall fulfill my supreme duty (dharma).
यदि तेऽहमनुग्राह्यो भ्रातृभिः सह केशव ।
स्वधर्मस्याविरोधेन तदुदाहर केशव ॥२४॥
24. yadi te'hamanugrāhyo bhrātṛbhiḥ saha keśava ,
svadharmasyāvirodhena tadudāhara keśava.
24. yadi te aham anugrāhyaḥ bhrātṛbhiḥ saha keśava
| svadharmasya avirodhena tat udāhara keśava
24. keśava yadi aham bhrātṛbhiḥ saha te anugrāhyaḥ (asmi),
(tarhi) svadharmasya avirodhena tat udāhara,
keśava
24. O Keśava, if I and my brothers are to receive your favor, then please tell me what to do, provided it is not in conflict with my own inherent duty (svadharma).
एतच्छ्रुत्वा वचस्तस्य कारुण्याद्बहुविस्तरम् ।
प्रत्युवाच ततः कृष्णः सान्त्वयानो युधिष्ठिरम् ॥२५॥
25. etacchrutvā vacastasya kāruṇyādbahuvistaram ,
pratyuvāca tataḥ kṛṣṇaḥ sāntvayāno yudhiṣṭhiram.
25. etat śrutvā vacaḥ tasya kāruṇyāt bahuvistaram |
pratyuvāca tataḥ kṛṣṇaḥ sāntvayānaḥ yudhiṣṭhiram
25. tataḥ kṛṣṇaḥ tasya bahuvistaram etat vacaḥ kāruṇyāt śrutvā,
yudhiṣṭhiram sāntvayānaḥ प्रत्युवाच
25. Having heard those extensive words of his, Krishna, then, out of compassion, replied while consoling Yudhiṣṭhira.
धर्मपुत्र विषादं त्वं मा कृथाः सत्यसंगर ।
यस्य ते भ्रातरः शूरा दुर्जयाः शत्रुसूदनाः ॥२६॥
26. dharmaputra viṣādaṁ tvaṁ mā kṛthāḥ satyasaṁgara ,
yasya te bhrātaraḥ śūrā durjayāḥ śatrusūdanāḥ.
26. dharmaputra viṣādam tvam mā kṛthāḥ satyasaṅgara
| yasya te bhrātaraḥ śūrāḥ durjayāḥ śatrusūdanāḥ
26. dharmaputra satyasaṅgara tvam viṣādam mā kṛthāḥ yasya
te bhrātaraḥ śūrāḥ durjayāḥ śatrusūdanāḥ (santi)
26. O son of Dharma (dharmaputra), O truthful warrior, do not give in to despondency. For your brothers are valiant, unconquerable, and destroyers of foes.
अर्जुनो भीमसेनश्च वाय्वग्निसमतेजसौ ।
माद्रीपुत्रौ च विक्रान्तौ त्रिदशानामिवेश्वरौ ॥२७॥
27. arjuno bhīmasenaśca vāyvagnisamatejasau ,
mādrīputrau ca vikrāntau tridaśānāmiveśvarau.
27. arjunaḥ bhīmasenaḥ ca vāyvagni-samatejasau
mādrīputrau ca vikrāntau tridaśānām iva īśvarau
27. arjunaḥ ca bhīmasenaḥ vāyvagni-samatejasau ca
mādrīputrau vikrāntau tridaśānām iva īśvarau
27. Arjuna and Bhīmasena are equal in splendor to Vāyu (the wind god) and Agni (the fire god); and the valorous sons of Mādrī (Nakula and Sahadeva) are like the lords of the thirty gods.
मां वा नियुङ्क्ष्व सौहार्दाद्योत्स्ये भीष्मेण पाण्डव ।
त्वत्प्रयुक्तो ह्यहं राजन्किं न कुर्यां महाहवे ॥२८॥
28. māṁ vā niyuṅkṣva sauhārdādyotsye bhīṣmeṇa pāṇḍava ,
tvatprayukto hyahaṁ rājankiṁ na kuryāṁ mahāhave.
28. mām vā niyuṅkṣva sauhārdāt yotsye bhīṣmeṇa pāṇḍava
tvatprayuktaḥ hi aham rājan kim na kuryām mahāhave
28. pāṇḍava sauhārdāt mām vā niyuṅkṣva.
aham bhīṣmeṇa yotsye.
rājan hi tvatprayuktaḥ aham mahāhave kim na kuryām?
28. Or, O Pāṇḍava, out of friendship, you may appoint me; I will fight against Bhīṣma. Indeed, O King, what would I not do in a great battle when employed by you?
हनिष्यामि रणे भीष्ममाहूय पुरुषर्षभम् ।
पश्यतां धार्तराष्ट्राणां यदि नेच्छति फल्गुनः ॥२९॥
29. haniṣyāmi raṇe bhīṣmamāhūya puruṣarṣabham ,
paśyatāṁ dhārtarāṣṭrāṇāṁ yadi necchati phalgunaḥ.
29. haniṣyāmi raṇe bhīṣmam āhūya puruṣarṣabham
paśyatām dhārtarāṣṭrāṇām yadi na icchati phālgunaḥ
29. yadi phālgunaḥ na icchati,
[tataḥ] raṇe puruṣarṣabham bhīṣmam āhūya dhārtarāṣṭrāṇām paśyatām [aham] haniṣyāmi.
29. I will slay Bhīṣma, that foremost of men (puruṣarṣabham), in battle, challenging him, while the Dhārtarāṣṭras watch, if Phālguna (Arjuna) does not desire to do so.
यदि भीष्मे हते राजञ्जयं पश्यसि पाण्डव ।
हन्तास्म्येकरथेनाद्य कुरुवृद्धं पितामहम् ॥३०॥
30. yadi bhīṣme hate rājañjayaṁ paśyasi pāṇḍava ,
hantāsmyekarathenādya kuruvṛddhaṁ pitāmaham.
30. yadi bhīṣme hate rājan jayam paśyasi pāṇḍava
hantā asmi ekarathena adya kuruvṛddham pitāmaham
30. rājan pāṇḍava yadi bhīṣme hate jayam paśyasi,

30. O King, O Pāṇḍava, if you foresee victory once Bhīṣma is slain, then I shall, today, with a single chariot, kill the elder of the Kurus, the Grandsire (Bhīṣma).
पश्य मे विक्रमं राजन्महेन्द्रस्येव संयुगे ।
विमुञ्चन्तं महास्त्राणि पातयिष्यामि तं रथात् ॥३१॥
31. paśya me vikramaṁ rājanmahendrasyeva saṁyuge ,
vimuñcantaṁ mahāstrāṇi pātayiṣyāmi taṁ rathāt.

31. O King, behold my valor in battle, just like Mahendra's (Indra)! I will bring him down from his chariot, even as he unleashes great weapons.
यः शत्रुः पाण्डुपुत्राणां मच्छत्रुः स न संशयः ।
मदर्था भवदर्था ये ये मदीयास्तवैव ते ॥३२॥
32. yaḥ śatruḥ pāṇḍuputrāṇāṁ macchatruḥ sa na saṁśayaḥ ,
madarthā bhavadarthā ye ye madīyāstavaiva te.
32. yaḥ śatruḥ pāṇḍuputrāṇām mat-śatruḥ sa na saṃśayaḥ
mat-arthāḥ bhavat-arthāḥ ye ye madīyāḥ tava eva te

32. Whoever is an enemy of the Pāṇḍu's sons is certainly my enemy. Furthermore, those who are for my cause are for your cause, and those who belong to me are indeed yours.
तव भ्राता मम सखा संबन्धी शिष्य एव च ।
मांसान्युत्कृत्य वै दद्यामर्जुनार्थे महीपते ॥३३॥
33. tava bhrātā mama sakhā saṁbandhī śiṣya eva ca ,
māṁsānyutkṛtya vai dadyāmarjunārthe mahīpate.
33. tava bhrātā mama sakhā sambandhī śiṣyaḥ eva ca
māṃsāni utkṛtya vai dadyām arjuna-arthe mahīpate

33. Your brother is my friend, relative, and also my disciple. O King, I would certainly cut off my own flesh and give it for Arjuna's sake.
एष चापि नरव्याघ्रो मत्कृते जीवितं त्यजेत् ।
एष नः समयस्तात तारयेम परस्परम् ।
स मां नियुङ्क्ष्व राजेन्द्र यावद्द्वीपो भवाम्यहम् ॥३४॥
34. eṣa cāpi naravyāghro matkṛte jīvitaṁ tyajet ,
eṣa naḥ samayastāta tārayema parasparam ,
sa māṁ niyuṅkṣva rājendra yāvaddvīpo bhavāmyaham.
34. eṣaḥ ca api naravyāghraḥ mat-kṛte

34. This tiger among men would even abandon his life for my sake. This is our agreement, dear one: we shall help each other. Therefore, O King of kings, employ me as long as I am on this earth.
प्रतिज्ञातमुपप्लव्ये यत्तत्पार्थेन पूर्वतः ।
घातयिष्यामि गाङ्गेयमित्युलूकस्य संनिधौ ॥३५॥
35. pratijñātamupaplavye yattatpārthena pūrvataḥ ,
ghātayiṣyāmi gāṅgeyamityulūkasya saṁnidhau.
35. pratijñātam upaplavyā yat tat pārthena pūrvataḥ
ghātayiṣyāmi gāṅgeyam iti ulūkasya saṃnidhau

35. That which was promised by Partha (Arjuna) earlier in Upaplavya, saying, 'I will slay Gangeya (Bhishma),' (that promise was made) in the presence of Uluka.
परिरक्ष्यं च मम तद्वचः पार्थस्य धीमतः ।
अनुज्ञातं तु पार्थेन मया कार्यं न संशयः ॥३६॥
36. parirakṣyaṁ ca mama tadvacaḥ pārthasya dhīmataḥ ,
anujñātaṁ tu pārthena mayā kāryaṁ na saṁśayaḥ.
36. parirakṣyam ca mama tat vacaḥ pārthasya dhīmataḥ

36. And that promise of the intelligent Partha (Arjuna) must be protected by me. Indeed, what is permitted by Partha, that must be accomplished by me, there is no doubt.
अथ वा फल्गुनस्यैष भारः परिमितो रणे ।
निहनिष्यति संग्रामे भीष्मं परपुरंजयम् ॥३७॥
37. atha vā phalgunasyaiṣa bhāraḥ parimito raṇe ,
nihaniṣyati saṁgrāme bhīṣmaṁ parapuraṁjayam.
37. atha vā phalgunasya eṣa bhāraḥ parimitaḥ raṇe
nihaniṣyati saṃgrāme bhīṣmam parapurajayam

37. Or rather, this task in battle is assigned to Phalguna (Arjuna); he will slay Bhishma, the conqueror of enemy cities, in the conflict.
अशक्यमपि कुर्याद्धि रणे पार्थः समुद्यतः ।
त्रिदशान्वा समुद्युक्तान्सहितान्दैत्यदानवैः ।
निहन्यादर्जुनः संख्ये किमु भीष्मं नराधिप ॥३८॥
38. aśakyamapi kuryāddhi raṇe pārthaḥ samudyataḥ ,
tridaśānvā samudyuktānsahitāndaityadānavaiḥ ,
nihanyādarjunaḥ saṁkhye kimu bhīṣmaṁ narādhipa.
38. aśakyam api kuryāt hi raṇe pārthaḥ

38. Indeed, the resolute Partha (Arjuna) would accomplish even the impossible in battle. He, Arjuna, would slay in conflict even the well-prepared gods, accompanied by Daityas and Danavas. What then of Bhishma, O King of men?
विपरीतो महावीर्यो गतसत्त्वोऽल्पजीवितः ।
भीष्मः शांतनवो नूनं कर्तव्यं नावबुध्यते ॥३९॥
39. viparīto mahāvīryo gatasattvo'lpajīvitaḥ ,
bhīṣmaḥ śāṁtanavo nūnaṁ kartavyaṁ nāvabudhyate.

bhīṣmaḥ śāṃtanavaḥ nūnaṃ kartavyaṃ na avabudhyate

39. Though greatly valorous, Bhishma, the son of Shantanu, is now bewildered, his spirit depleted and his life short. He certainly does not comprehend his duty (dharma).
युधिष्ठिर उवाच ।
एवमेतन्महाबाहो यथा वदसि माधव ।
सर्वे ह्येते न पर्याप्तास्तव वेगनिवारणे ॥४०॥
40. yudhiṣṭhira uvāca ,
evametanmahābāho yathā vadasi mādhava ,
sarve hyete na paryāptāstava veganivāraṇe.

40. Yudhishthira said: "O mighty-armed (mahābāhu) Madhava, this is indeed as you say. For all of them (our opponents) are surely insufficient to withstand your force."
नियतं समवाप्स्यामि सर्वमेव यथेप्सितम् ।
यस्य मे पुरुषव्याघ्र भवान्नाथो महाबलः ॥४१॥
41. niyataṁ samavāpsyāmi sarvameva yathepsitam ,
yasya me puruṣavyāghra bhavānnātho mahābalaḥ.

41. I shall certainly attain all that is desired, O tiger among men (puruṣavyāghra), because you, the greatly powerful one (mahābala), are my protector.
सेन्द्रानपि रणे देवाञ्जयेयं जयतां वर ।
त्वया नाथेन गोविन्द किमु भीष्मं महाहवे ॥४२॥
42. sendrānapi raṇe devāñjayeyaṁ jayatāṁ vara ,
tvayā nāthena govinda kimu bhīṣmaṁ mahāhave.
42. sa indrān api raṇe devān jayeyaṃ jayatāṃ vara
tvayā nāthena govinda kimu bhīṣmaṃ mahāhave

42. O best among conquerors (jayatāṃ vara), with you as my protector, O Govinda, I could conquer even the gods, including Indra, in battle; how much more easily, then, could I conquer Bhishma in a great war?
न तु त्वामनृतं कर्तुमुत्सहे स्वार्थगौरवात् ।
अयुध्यमानः साहाय्यं यथोक्तं कुरु माधव ॥४३॥
43. na tu tvāmanṛtaṁ kartumutsahe svārthagauravāt ,
ayudhyamānaḥ sāhāyyaṁ yathoktaṁ kuru mādhava.
43. na tu tvām anṛtam kartum utsahe svārthagauravāt
ayudhyamānaḥ sāhāyyam yathoktam kuru mādhava

43. But I am not willing to make you break your word for the sake of my own importance. O Mādhava, please provide the promised help without engaging in combat.
समयस्तु कृतः कश्चिद्भीष्मेण मम माधव ।
मन्त्रयिष्ये तवार्थाय न तु योत्स्ये कथंचन ।
दुर्योधनार्थे योत्स्यामि सत्यमेतदिति प्रभो ॥४४॥
44. samayastu kṛtaḥ kaścidbhīṣmeṇa mama mādhava ,
mantrayiṣye tavārthāya na tu yotsye kathaṁcana ,
duryodhanārthe yotsyāmi satyametaditi prabho.
44. samayaḥ tu kṛtaḥ kaścit bhīṣmeṇa mama
mādhava mantrayiṣye tava arthāya
na tu yotsye kathaṃcana duryodhanārthe
yotsyāmi satyam etat iti prabho

44. But O Mādhava, a certain pledge was made by me, Bhishma: 'I will offer counsel for your sake, but I will not fight by any means. I will fight for Duryodhana's sake.' This is the truth, O Lord.
स हि राज्यस्य मे दाता मन्त्रस्यैव च माधव ।
तस्माद्देवव्रतं भूयो वधोपायार्थमात्मनः ।
भवता सहिताः सर्वे पृच्छामो मधुसूदन ॥४५॥
45. sa hi rājyasya me dātā mantrasyaiva ca mādhava ,
tasmāddevavrataṁ bhūyo vadhopāyārthamātmanaḥ ,
bhavatā sahitāḥ sarve pṛcchāmo madhusūdana.

sarve bhavatā sahitāḥ (vayam),
ātmanaḥ vadha-upāya-artham devavratam bhūyaḥ pṛcchāmaḥ
45. Indeed, he (Duryodhana) is the one who provides my sustenance from his kingdom, and I am also the source of counsel, O Mādhava. Therefore, O Madhusūdana, all of us, together with you, shall again ask Devavrata (Bhishma himself) for the means to my own death.
तद्वयं सहिता गत्वा भीष्ममाशु नरोत्तमम् ।
रुचिते तव वार्ष्णेय मन्त्रं पृच्छाम कौरवम् ॥४६॥
46. tadvayaṁ sahitā gatvā bhīṣmamāśu narottamam ,
rucite tava vārṣṇeya mantraṁ pṛcchāma kauravam.
46. tat vayam sahitāḥ gatvā bhīṣmam āśu narottamam
rucite tava vārṣṇeya mantram pṛcchāma kauravam
46. vārṣṇeya,

46. Therefore, if it pleases you, O Vārṣṇeya, we shall all go quickly to Bhishma, that best of men, and ask him, the Kuru, for his counsel.
स वक्ष्यति हितं वाक्यं तथ्यं चैव जनार्दन ।
यथा स वक्ष्यते कृष्ण तथा कर्तास्मि संयुगे ॥४७॥
47. sa vakṣyati hitaṁ vākyaṁ tathyaṁ caiva janārdana ,
yathā sa vakṣyate kṛṣṇa tathā kartāsmi saṁyuge.
47. saḥ vakṣyati hitam vākyam tathyam ca eva janārdana
yathā saḥ vakṣyate kṛṣṇa tathā kartā asmi saṃyuge
47. janārdana kṛṣṇa saḥ hitam tathyam vākyam ca eva

47. O Janardana (Krishna), he will speak beneficial and true words. O Krishna, whatever he says, I will act accordingly in battle.
स नो जयस्य दाता च मन्त्रस्य च धृतव्रतः ।
बालाः पित्रा विहीनाश्च तेन संवर्धिता वयम् ॥४८॥
48. sa no jayasya dātā ca mantrasya ca dhṛtavrataḥ ,
bālāḥ pitrā vihīnāśca tena saṁvardhitā vayam.
48. saḥ naḥ jayasya dātā ca mantrasya ca dhṛtavrataḥ
bālāḥ pitrā vihīnāḥ ca tena saṃvardhitāḥ vayam

48. He (Bhishma) is the giver of victory and counsel to us, steadfast in his vows. We, children bereft of our father, were raised by him.
तं चेत्पितामहं वृद्धं हन्तुमिच्छामि माधव ।
पितुः पितरमिष्टं वै धिगस्तु क्षत्रजीविकाम् ॥४९॥
49. taṁ cetpitāmahaṁ vṛddhaṁ hantumicchāmi mādhava ,
pituḥ pitaramiṣṭaṁ vai dhigastu kṣatrajīvikām.

pituḥ pitaram iṣṭam vai dhik astu kṣatra-jīvikām

49. O Madhava (Krishna), if I wish to kill that old grandfather, the beloved father of my father, then shame be upon the warrior's profession (kṣatra-jīvikā)!
संजय उवाच ।
ततोऽब्रवीन्महाराज वार्ष्णेयः कुरुनन्दनम् ।
रोचते मे महाबाहो सततं तव भाषितम् ॥५०॥
50. saṁjaya uvāca ,
tato'bravīnmahārāja vārṣṇeyaḥ kurunandanam ,
rocate me mahābāho satataṁ tava bhāṣitam.

50. Sanjaya said: Then, O great king (Dhritarashtra), Vārṣṇeya (Krishna) spoke to the delight of the Kurus (Arjuna): 'O mighty-armed (Arjuna), your words always please me.'
देवव्रतः कृती भीष्मः प्रेक्षितेनापि निर्दहेत् ।
गम्यतां स वधोपायं प्रष्टुं सागरगासुतः ।
वक्तुमर्हति सत्यं स त्वया पृष्टो विशेषतः ॥५१॥
51. devavrataḥ kṛtī bhīṣmaḥ prekṣitenāpi nirdahet ,
gamyatāṁ sa vadhopāyaṁ praṣṭuṁ sāgaragāsutaḥ ,
vaktumarhati satyaṁ sa tvayā pṛṣṭo viśeṣataḥ.
51. devavrataḥ kṛtī bhīṣmaḥ prekṣitena
api nirdhet gamyatām sa vadha-upāyam
praṣṭum sāgaragā-sutaḥ vaktum arhati
satyam sa tvayā pṛṣṭaḥ viśeṣataḥ
51. devavrataḥ kṛtī bhīṣmaḥ api prekṣitena
nirdhet sa sāgaragā-sutaḥ
vadha-upāyam praṣṭum gamyatām tvayā
viśeṣataḥ pṛṣṭaḥ sa satyam vaktum arhati
51. Bhishma, the accomplished one who took a divine vow (devavrata), could burn his enemies even with a mere glance. Let us go to him, the son of the river Ganga (sāgaragāsuta), to ask about the means of his demise. He will certainly tell the truth, especially when asked by you.
ते वयं तत्र गच्छामः प्रष्टुं कुरुपितामहम् ।
प्रणम्य शिरसा चैनं मन्त्रं पृच्छाम माधव ।
स नो दास्यति यं मन्त्रं तेन योत्स्यामहे परान् ॥५२॥
52. te vayaṁ tatra gacchāmaḥ praṣṭuṁ kurupitāmaham ,
praṇamya śirasā cainaṁ mantraṁ pṛcchāma mādhava ,
sa no dāsyati yaṁ mantraṁ tena yotsyāmahe parān.
52. te vayam tatra gacchāmaḥ praṣṭum
kurupitāmaham praṇamya śirasā ca enam
mantram pṛcchāma mādhava sa naḥ dāsyati
yam mantram tena yotsyāmahe parān
52. te vayam tatra kurupitāmaham praṣṭum gacchāmaḥ mādhava,
ca śirasā enam praṇamya,
mantram pṛcchāma sa yam mantram naḥ dāsyati,
tena parān yotsyāmahe
52. We should go there to ask the patriarch of the Kurus (kurupitāmaha). O Madhava (Krishna), bowing our heads to him, we will ask for counsel (mantra). Whatever counsel (mantra) he gives us, with that we will fight the enemies.
एवं संमन्त्र्य वै वीराः पाण्डवाः पाण्डुपूर्वज ।
जग्मुस्ते सहिताः सर्वे वासुदेवश्च वीर्यवान् ।
विमुक्तशस्त्रकवचा भीष्मस्य सदनं प्रति ॥५३॥
53. evaṁ saṁmantrya vai vīrāḥ pāṇḍavāḥ pāṇḍupūrvaja ,
jagmuste sahitāḥ sarve vāsudevaśca vīryavān ,
vimuktaśastrakavacā bhīṣmasya sadanaṁ prati.
53. evam sammantrya vai vīrāḥ pāṇḍavāḥ
pāṇḍu-pūrvaja jagmuḥ te sahitāḥ sarve
vāsudevaḥ ca vīryavān

vīrāḥ pāṇḍavāḥ te sarve vīryavān vāsudevaḥ ca sahitāḥ,
vimukta-śastra-kavacāḥ,
bhīṣmasya sadanam prati jagmuḥ
53. O elder of the Pandus (pāṇḍupūrvaja), the heroic Pandavas, having consulted thus, all of them, accompanied by the mighty Vasudeva (Krishna), proceeded towards Bhishma's dwelling, having laid aside their weapons and armor.
प्रविश्य च तदा भीष्मं शिरोभिः प्रतिपेदिरे ।
पूजयन्तो महाराज पाण्डवा भरतर्षभ ।
प्रणम्य शिरसा चैनं भीष्मं शरणमन्वयुः ॥५४॥
54. praviśya ca tadā bhīṣmaṁ śirobhiḥ pratipedire ,
pūjayanto mahārāja pāṇḍavā bharatarṣabha ,
praṇamya śirasā cainaṁ bhīṣmaṁ śaraṇamanvayuḥ.

54. And then, entering, they bowed their heads to Bhishma. O great king, O best of Bharatas (bharatarṣabha), the Pandavas, honoring him, bowed their heads to him and sought refuge (śaraṇa) in Bhishma.
तानुवाच महाबाहुर्भीष्मः कुरुपितामहः ।
स्वागतं तव वार्ष्णेय स्वागतं ते धनंजय ।
स्वागतं धर्मपुत्राय भीमाय यमयोस्तथा ॥५५॥
55. tānuvāca mahābāhurbhīṣmaḥ kurupitāmahaḥ ,
svāgataṁ tava vārṣṇeya svāgataṁ te dhanaṁjaya ,
svāgataṁ dharmaputrāya bhīmāya yamayostathā.

55. The mighty-armed Bhishma, the grandfather of the Kurus, addressed them, saying, "Welcome to you, O Vārṣṇeya! Welcome to you, O Dhanañjaya! And welcome also to the son of natural law (dharma), to Bhima, and to the twins (Nakula and Sahadeva)."
किं कार्यं वः करोम्यद्य युष्मत्प्रीतिविवर्धनम् ।
सर्वात्मना च कर्तास्मि यद्यपि स्यात्सुदुष्करम् ॥५६॥
56. kiṁ kāryaṁ vaḥ karomyadya yuṣmatprītivivardhanam ,
sarvātmanā ca kartāsmi yadyapi syātsuduṣkaram.
56. kim kāryam vaḥ karomi adya yuṣmatprītivivardhanam
sarvātmanā ca kartā asmi yadyapi syāt suduskaram

56. "What task that would enhance your happiness shall I perform for you today? I shall certainly do it wholeheartedly (sarvātmanā), even if it proves to be exceedingly difficult."
तथा ब्रुवाणं गाङ्गेयं प्रीतियुक्तं पुनः पुनः ।
उवाच वाक्यं दीनात्मा धर्मपुत्रो युधिष्ठिरः ॥५७॥
57. tathā bruvāṇaṁ gāṅgeyaṁ prītiyuktaṁ punaḥ punaḥ ,
uvāca vākyaṁ dīnātmā dharmaputro yudhiṣṭhiraḥ.
57. tathā bruvāṇam gāṅgeyam prītiyuktam punaḥ punaḥ

57. Yudhishthira, the son of natural law (dharma) and distressed in spirit (ātman), then spoke these words to Ganga's son (Bhishma), who was repeatedly speaking with such affection.
कथं जयेम धर्मज्ञ कथं राज्यं लभेमहि ।
प्रजानां संक्षयो न स्यात्कथं तन्मे वदाभिभो ॥५८॥
58. kathaṁ jayema dharmajña kathaṁ rājyaṁ labhemahi ,
prajānāṁ saṁkṣayo na syātkathaṁ tanme vadābhibho.
58. katham jayema dharmajña katham rājyam labhemahi
prajānām saṃkṣayaḥ na syāt katham tat me vada abhibho
58. dharmajña abhibho katham jayema katham rājyam
labhemahi prajānām saṃkṣayaḥ na syāt tat katham me vada
58. "O knower of natural law (dharma), how may we achieve victory? How may we regain the kingdom? And how can it be that there is no destruction of the subjects? Tell me that, O lord."
भवान्हि नो वधोपायं ब्रवीतु स्वयमात्मनः ।
भवन्तं समरे राजन्विषहेम कथं वयम् ॥५९॥
59. bhavānhi no vadhopāyaṁ bravītu svayamātmanaḥ ,
bhavantaṁ samare rājanviṣahema kathaṁ vayam.
59. bhavān hi naḥ vadhopāyam bravītu svayam ātmanaḥ

59. O King, please tell us yourself the means to defeat you. Indeed, how can we possibly withstand you in battle?
न हि ते सूक्ष्ममप्यस्ति रन्ध्रं कुरुपितामह ।
मण्डलेनैव धनुषा सदा दृश्योऽसि संयुगे ॥६०॥
60. na hi te sūkṣmamapyasti randhraṁ kurupitāmaha ,
maṇḍalenaiva dhanuṣā sadā dṛśyo'si saṁyuge.
60. na hi te sūkṣmam api asti randhram kurupitāmaha
| maṇḍalena eva dhanuṣā sadā dṛśyaḥ asi saṃyuge
60. kurupitāmaha te sūkṣmam api randhram na hi asti

60. Indeed, there is not even a tiny flaw (randhra) in you, O Grandfather of the Kurus. You are always seen in battle with your bow (dhanus) drawn in a perfect circle (maṇḍala).
नाददानं संदधानं विकर्षन्तं धनुर्न च ।
पश्यामस्त्वा महाबाहो रथे सूर्यमिव स्थितम् ॥६१॥
61. nādadānaṁ saṁdadhānaṁ vikarṣantaṁ dhanurna ca ,
paśyāmastvā mahābāho rathe sūryamiva sthitam.
61. na ādādānam sandadhānam vikarṣantam dhanuḥ na ca
| paśyāmaḥ tvā mahābāho rathe sūryam iva sthitam
61. mahābāho vayam tvā ādādānam sandadhānam vikarṣantam
dhanuḥ na ca paśyāmaḥ rathe sūryam iva sthitam
61. O mighty-armed one, we do not see you taking up, aiming, or drawing your bow (dhanus); instead, you appear to us standing on your chariot like the sun.
नराश्वरथनागानां हन्तारं परवीरहन् ।
क इवोत्सहते हन्तुं त्वां पुमान्भरतर्षभ ॥६२॥
62. narāśvarathanāgānāṁ hantāraṁ paravīrahan ,
ka ivotsahate hantuṁ tvāṁ pumānbharatarṣabha.

iva utsahate hantum tvām pumān bharatarṣabha

62. O destroyer of enemy heroes, O best of the Bharatas, who among men would dare to kill you, who are the slayer of men, horses, chariots, and elephants?
वर्षता शरवर्षाणि महान्ति पुरुषोत्तम ।
क्षयं नीता हि पृतना भवता महती मम ॥६३॥
63. varṣatā śaravarṣāṇi mahānti puruṣottama ,
kṣayaṁ nītā hi pṛtanā bhavatā mahatī mama.

63. O best among men (puruṣottama), by you, showering great torrents of arrows, my vast army has indeed been led to destruction.
यथा युधि जयेयं त्वां यथा राज्यं भवेन्मम ।
भवेत्सैन्यस्य वा शान्तिस्तन्मे ब्रूहि पितामह ॥६४॥
64. yathā yudhi jayeyaṁ tvāṁ yathā rājyaṁ bhavenmama ,
bhavetsainyasya vā śāntistanme brūhi pitāmaha.
64. yathā yudhi jayeyam tvām yathā rājyam bhavet mama
bhavet sainyasya vā śāntiḥ tat me brūhi pitāmaha
64. pitāmaha me tat brūhi yathā yudhi tvām jayeyam,
yathā mama rājyam bhavet,
vā sainyasya śāntiḥ bhavet
64. O Grandfather (pitāmaha), tell me how I may conquer you in battle, how the kingdom may become mine, or how there may be peace (śānti) for the army.
ततोऽब्रवीच्छांतनवः पाण्डवान्पाण्डुपूर्वज ।
न कथंचन कौन्तेय मयि जीवति संयुगे ।
युष्मासु दृश्यते वृद्धिः सत्यमेतद्ब्रवीमि वः ॥६५॥
65. tato'bravīcchāṁtanavaḥ pāṇḍavānpāṇḍupūrvaja ,
na kathaṁcana kaunteya mayi jīvati saṁyuge ,
yuṣmāsu dṛśyate vṛddhiḥ satyametadbravīmi vaḥ.
65. tataḥ abravīt śāntanavaḥ pāṇḍavān
pāṇḍupūrvaja na kathaṃcana kaunteya
mayi jīvati saṃyuge yuṣmāsu dṛśyate
vṛddhiḥ satyam etat bravīmi vaḥ
65. tataḥ śāntanavaḥ pāṇḍupūrvaja pāṇḍavān abravīt: kaunteya mayi saṃyuge jīvati yuṣmāsu kathaṃcana vṛddhiḥ na dṛśyate.
etat satyam vaḥ bravīmi.
65. Then Bhishma (śāntanavaḥ), O son of Pāṇḍu, spoke to the Pāṇḍavas: 'O son of Kuntī, as long as I am alive in battle, no success (vṛddhi) will be seen for you by any means. I tell you this truth.'
निर्जिते मयि युद्धे तु ध्रुवं जेष्यथ कौरवान् ।
क्षिप्रं मयि प्रहरत यदीच्छथ रणे जयम् ।
अनुजानामि वः पार्थाः प्रहरध्वं यथासुखम् ॥६६॥
66. nirjite mayi yuddhe tu dhruvaṁ jeṣyatha kauravān ,
kṣipraṁ mayi praharata yadīcchatha raṇe jayam ,
anujānāmi vaḥ pārthāḥ praharadhvaṁ yathāsukham.
66. nirjite mayi yuddhe tu dhruvam jeṣyatha
kauravān kṣipram mayi praharata
yadi icchatha raṇe jayam anujānāmi
vaḥ pārthāḥ praharadhvam yathāsukham

66. But once I am defeated in battle, you will certainly conquer the Kauravas. If you desire victory (jaya) in battle, strike me swiftly. O sons of Pṛthā (pārthāḥ), I permit you: strike as you please (yathāsukham).
एवं हि सुकृतं मन्ये भवतां विदितो ह्यहम् ।
हते मयि हतं सर्वं तस्मादेवं विधीयताम् ॥६७॥
67. evaṁ hi sukṛtaṁ manye bhavatāṁ vidito hyaham ,
hate mayi hataṁ sarvaṁ tasmādevaṁ vidhīyatām.
67. evam hi sukṛtam manye bhavatām viditaḥ hi aham
hate mayi hatam sarvam tasmāt evam vidhīyatām

67. Indeed, I consider it a good deed that I am known to you. When I am slain, everything is destroyed; therefore, let it be done in this way.
युधिष्ठिर उवाच ।
ब्रूहि तस्मादुपायं नो यथा युद्धे जयेमहि ।
भवन्तं समरे क्रुद्धं दण्डपाणिमिवान्तकम् ॥६८॥
68. yudhiṣṭhira uvāca ,
brūhi tasmādupāyaṁ no yathā yuddhe jayemahi ,
bhavantaṁ samare kruddhaṁ daṇḍapāṇimivāntakam.

68. Yudhiṣṭhira said: Therefore, tell us the means by which we may be victorious in battle, [for we face] you, enraged in combat, like Antaka (Yama) holding his mace.
शक्यो वज्रधरो जेतुं वरुणोऽथ यमस्तथा ।
न भवान्समरे शक्यः सेन्द्रैरपि सुरासुरैः ॥६९॥
69. śakyo vajradharo jetuṁ varuṇo'tha yamastathā ,
na bhavānsamare śakyaḥ sendrairapi surāsuraiḥ.
69. śakyaḥ vajradharaḥ jetum varuṇaḥ atha yamaḥ tathā
na bhavān samare śakyaḥ sa-indraiḥ api sura-asuraiḥ

69. Indra, the wielder of the thunderbolt, can be conquered, and Varuṇa, and Yama likewise. But you, in battle, cannot be conquered, not even by the gods and asuras with Indra.
भीष्म उवाच ।
सत्यमेतन्महाबाहो यथा वदसि पाण्डव ।
नाहं शक्यो रणे जेतुं सेन्द्रैरपि सुरासुरैः ॥७०॥
70. bhīṣma uvāca ,
satyametanmahābāho yathā vadasi pāṇḍava ,
nāhaṁ śakyo raṇe jetuṁ sendrairapi surāsuraiḥ.

70. Bhīṣma said: This is true, O mighty-armed one, as you say, O Pāṇḍava. I cannot be conquered in battle, not even by the gods and asuras along with Indra.
आत्तशस्त्रो रणे यत्तो गृहीतवरकार्मुकः ।
न्यस्तशस्त्रं तु मां राजन्हन्युर्युधि महारथाः ॥७१॥
71. āttaśastro raṇe yatto gṛhītavarakārmukaḥ ,
nyastaśastraṁ tu māṁ rājanhanyuryudhi mahārathāḥ.

nyastaśastraṃ tu māṃ rājan hanyuḥ yudhi mahārathāḥ

71. O King, the great charioteers (mahārathāḥ) would kill me in battle (yudhi) even when I am armed, prepared for battle, and holding my excellent bow. However, they would certainly kill me if I were to lay down my weapons (nyastaśastraṃ).
निक्षिप्तशस्त्रे पतिते विमुक्तकवचध्वजे ।
द्रवमाणे च भीते च तवास्मीति च वादिनि ॥७२॥
72. nikṣiptaśastre patite vimuktakavacadhvaje ,
dravamāṇe ca bhīte ca tavāsmīti ca vādini.

72. Nor (will I fight) one who has laid down their weapons (nikṣiptaśastre), is fallen (patite), has abandoned their armor and banner (vimuktakavacadhvaje), is fleeing (dravamāṇe), is frightened (bhīte), or is proclaiming, 'I am yours' (tavāsmīti vādini).
स्त्रियां स्त्रीनामधेये च विकले चैकपुत्रके ।
अप्रसूते च दुष्प्रेक्ष्ये न युद्धं रोचते मम ॥७३॥
73. striyāṁ strīnāmadheye ca vikale caikaputrake ,
aprasūte ca duṣprekṣye na yuddhaṁ rocate mama.

73. Battle (yuddhaṃ) is not pleasing to me (mama) when it involves a woman (striyāṃ), one bearing a woman's name (strīnāmadheye), a disabled person (vikale), one with only one son (ekaputrake), one who has not yet borne children (aprasūte), or one who is difficult to face (duṣprekṣye).
इमं च शृणु मे पार्थ संकल्पं पूर्वचिन्तितम् ।
अमङ्गल्यध्वजं दृष्ट्वा न युध्येयं कथंचन ॥७४॥
74. imaṁ ca śṛṇu me pārtha saṁkalpaṁ pūrvacintitam ,
amaṅgalyadhvajaṁ dṛṣṭvā na yudhyeyaṁ kathaṁcana.

74. O Pārtha, hear this resolve (saṃkalpaṃ) of mine, which I had previously considered (pūrvacintitam): having seen an inauspicious banner (amaṅgalyadhvajaṃ), I would not fight (na yudhyeyaṃ) by any means (kathaṃcana).
य एष द्रौपदो राजंस्तव सैन्ये महारथः ।
शिखण्डी समराकाङ्क्षी शूरश्च समितिंजयः ॥७५॥
75. ya eṣa draupado rājaṁstava sainye mahārathaḥ ,
śikhaṇḍī samarākāṅkṣī śūraśca samitiṁjayaḥ.

śikhaṇḍī samara-ākāṅkṣī śūraḥ ca samitiñjayaḥ

75. O King, this Shikhaṇḍī, son of Drupada, is a great charioteer (maharatha) in your army. He is eager for battle, a hero, and victorious in assemblies.
यथाभवच्च स्त्री पूर्वं पश्चात्पुंस्त्वमुपागतः ।
जानन्ति च भवन्तोऽपि सर्वमेतद्यथातथम् ॥७६॥
76. yathābhavacca strī pūrvaṁ paścātpuṁstvamupāgataḥ ,
jānanti ca bhavanto'pi sarvametadyathātatham.
76. yathā abhavat ca strī pūrvaṃ paścāt puṃstvam upāgataḥ
jānanti ca bhavantaḥ api sarvam etat yathātatham
76. ca yathā pūrvaṃ strī abhavat paścāt puṃstvam upāgataḥ

76. And how he was formerly a woman and later attained manhood – you all also know all this exactly as it is.
अर्जुनः समरे शूरः पुरस्कृत्य शिखण्डिनम् ।
मामेव विशिखैस्तूर्णमभिद्रवतु दंशितः ॥७७॥
77. arjunaḥ samare śūraḥ puraskṛtya śikhaṇḍinam ,
māmeva viśikhaistūrṇamabhidravatu daṁśitaḥ.

77. Arjuna, brave in battle, having placed Shikhaṇḍī in front, should swiftly attack me with arrows, being armored.
अमङ्गल्यध्वजे तस्मिन्स्त्रीपूर्वे च विशेषतः ।
न प्रहर्तुमभीप्सामि गृहीतेषुं कथंचन ॥७८॥
78. amaṅgalyadhvaje tasminstrīpūrve ca viśeṣataḥ ,
na prahartumabhīpsāmi gṛhīteṣuṁ kathaṁcana.
78. amaṅgalya-dhvaje tasmin strī-pūrve ca viśeṣataḥ
na prahartum abhīpsāmi gṛhīteṣum kathaṃcana
78. tasmin amaṅgalya-dhvaje ca viśeṣataḥ strī-pūrve

78. I do not wish to strike, under any circumstances, that one who bears an inauspicious banner and was especially formerly a woman, even while holding an arrow.
तदन्तरं समासाद्य पाण्डवो मां धनंजयः ।
शरैर्घातयतु क्षिप्रं समन्ताद्भरतर्षभ ॥७९॥
79. tadantaraṁ samāsādya pāṇḍavo māṁ dhanaṁjayaḥ ,
śarairghātayatu kṣipraṁ samantādbharatarṣabha.
79. tat antaram samāsādya pāṇḍavaḥ mām dhanañjayaḥ
śaraiḥ ghātayatu kṣipram samantāt bharatarṣabha
79. bharatarṣabha pāṇḍavaḥ dhanañjayaḥ tat antaram
samāsādya mām śaraiḥ samantāt kṣipram ghātayatu
79. O best of Bharatas (bharatarṣabha), once this Pandava (pāṇḍava), Dhananjaya, has found that opportune moment, let him quickly strike me from all sides with arrows.
न तं पश्यामि लोकेषु यो मां हन्यात्समुद्यतम् ।
ऋते कृष्णान्महाभागात्पाण्डवाद्वा धनंजयात् ॥८०॥
80. na taṁ paśyāmi lokeṣu yo māṁ hanyātsamudyatam ,
ṛte kṛṣṇānmahābhāgātpāṇḍavādvā dhanaṁjayāt.
80. na tam paśyāmi lokeṣu yaḥ mām hanyāt samudyatam
ṛte kṛṣṇāt mahābhāgāt pāṇḍavāt vā dhanañjayāt
80. lokeṣu tam na paśyāmi yaḥ samudyatam mām kṛṣṇāt
mahābhāgāt pāṇḍavāt vā dhanañjayāt ṛte hanyāt
80. Among all the worlds, I do not see anyone who could kill me when I am fully prepared, except for the highly glorious Krishna (kṛṣṇa) or the Pandava (pāṇḍava) Dhananjaya.
एष तस्मात्पुरोधाय कंचिदन्यं ममाग्रतः ।
मां पातयतु बीभत्सुरेवं ते विजयो भवेत् ॥८१॥
81. eṣa tasmātpurodhāya kaṁcidanyaṁ mamāgrataḥ ,
māṁ pātayatu bībhatsurevaṁ te vijayo bhavet.
81. eṣaḥ tasmāt purodhāya kañcit anyam mama agrataḥ
mām pātayatu bībhatsuḥ evam te vijayaḥ bhavet
81. tasmāt eṣaḥ bībhatsuḥ kañcit anyam mama agrataḥ

81. Therefore, let this Bibhatsu (bībhatsu) place someone else in front of me and then strike me down; in this way, victory will be yours.
एतत्कुरुष्व कौन्तेय यथोक्तं वचनं मम ।
ततो जेष्यसि संग्रामे धार्तराष्ट्रान्समागतान् ॥८२॥
82. etatkuruṣva kaunteya yathoktaṁ vacanaṁ mama ,
tato jeṣyasi saṁgrāme dhārtarāṣṭrānsamāgatān.

tataḥ jeṣyasi saṃgrāme dhārtarāṣṭrān samāgatān
82. kaunteya mama yathā uktam etat vacanam kuruṣva
tataḥ saṃgrāme samāgatān dhārtarāṣṭrān jeṣyasi
82. O son of Kunti (kaunteya), do this instruction of mine as it has been stated; then you will conquer the Dhritarashtras (dhārtarāṣṭra) who are assembled in battle.
संजय उवाच ।
तेऽनुज्ञातास्ततः पार्था जग्मुः स्वशिबिरं प्रति ।
अभिवाद्य महात्मानं भीष्मं कुरुपितामहम् ॥८३॥
83. saṁjaya uvāca ,
te'nujñātāstataḥ pārthā jagmuḥ svaśibiraṁ prati ,
abhivādya mahātmānaṁ bhīṣmaṁ kurupitāmaham.
83. sañjaya uvāca te anujñātāḥ tataḥ pārthāḥ jagmuḥ sva-śibiram
prati abhivādya mahā-ātmānam bhīṣmam kuru-pitāmaham
83. sañjaya uvāca tataḥ anujñātāḥ te pārthāḥ mahā-ātmānam
kuru-pitāmaham bhīṣmam abhivādya sva-śibiram prati jagmuḥ
83. Sañjaya said: Then, having received permission, the Pāṇḍavas, after respectfully saluting the noble (mahātman) Bhīṣma, the grandfather of the Kurus, returned to their own camp.
तथोक्तवति गाङ्गेये परलोकाय दीक्षिते ।
अर्जुनो दुःखसंतप्तः सव्रीडमिदमब्रवीत् ॥८४॥
84. tathoktavati gāṅgeye paralokāya dīkṣite ,
arjuno duḥkhasaṁtaptaḥ savrīḍamidamabravīt.
84. tathā uktavati gāṅgeye paralokāya dīkṣite
arjunaḥ duḥkha-saṃtaptaḥ sa-vrīḍam idam abravīt

84. When Bhīṣma, the son of Gaṅgā, who had thus spoken and dedicated himself to the next world, finished speaking, Arjuna, overwhelmed by sorrow, said this with a sense of shame.
गुरुणा कुलवृद्धेन कृतप्रज्ञेन धीमता ।
पितामहेन संग्रामे कथं योत्स्यामि माधव ॥८५॥
85. guruṇā kulavṛddhena kṛtaprajñena dhīmatā ,
pitāmahena saṁgrāme kathaṁ yotsyāmi mādhava.
85. guruṇā kula-vṛddhena kṛta-prajñena dhīmatā
pitāmahena saṅgrāme katham yotsyāmi mādhava
85. mādhava guruṇā kula-vṛddhena kṛta-prajñena
dhīmatā pitāmahena saṅgrāme katham yotsyāmi
85. O Mādhava, how can I fight in battle against my guru (teacher), the venerable elder of the family, the one of accomplished wisdom, my intelligent grandfather?
क्रीडता हि मया बाल्ये वासुदेव महामनाः ।
पांसुरूषितगात्रेण महात्मा परुषीकृतः ॥८६॥
86. krīḍatā hi mayā bālye vāsudeva mahāmanāḥ ,
pāṁsurūṣitagātreṇa mahātmā paruṣīkṛtaḥ.

pāṃsu-rūṣita-gātreṇa mahā-ātmā paruṣīkṛtaḥ
86. vāsudeva mahā-manāḥ hi bālye krīḍatā

86. O Vāsudeva, O magnanimous one, indeed, in my childhood, while playing with my body soiled with dust, I harshly treated the venerable Bhīṣma (mahātman).
यस्याहमधिरुह्याङ्कं बालः किल गदाग्रज ।
तातेत्यवोचं पितरं पितुः पाण्डोर्महात्मनः ॥८७॥
87. yasyāhamadhiruhyāṅkaṁ bālaḥ kila gadāgraja ,
tātetyavocaṁ pitaraṁ pituḥ pāṇḍormahātmanaḥ.
87. yasya aham adhiruhya aṅkam bālaḥ kila gadāgraja
tāta iti avocam pitaram pituḥ pāṇḍoḥ mahātmanaḥ
87. gadāgraja! bālaḥ aham yasya aṅkam adhiruhya tāta
iti avocam pitaram pituḥ pāṇḍoḥ mahātmanaḥ kila
87. O elder brother of Gada (Kṛṣṇa), as a child, I indeed climbed upon his (Bhīṣma's) lap and called him "father," just as he was a father-figure to the great-souled Pāṇḍu.
नाहं तातस्तव पितुस्तातोऽस्मि तव भारत ।
इति मामब्रवीद्बाल्ये यः स वध्यः कथं मया ॥८८॥
88. nāhaṁ tātastava pitustāto'smi tava bhārata ,
iti māmabravīdbālye yaḥ sa vadhyaḥ kathaṁ mayā.
88. na aham tāta tava pituḥ tātaḥ asmi tava bhārata
iti mām abravīt bālye yaḥ saḥ vadhyaḥ katham mayā
88. bhārata! na aham tāta tava pituḥ tātaḥ asmi tava iti yaḥ mām bālye abravīt,
saḥ katham mayā vadhyaḥ
88. "O Bhārata, I am not your father, nor the father of your father," he who spoke these words to me in my childhood, how can he possibly be slain by me?
कामं वध्यतु मे सैन्यं नाहं योत्स्ये महात्मना ।
जयो वास्तु वधो वा मे कथं वा कृष्ण मन्यसे ॥८९॥
89. kāmaṁ vadhyatu me sainyaṁ nāhaṁ yotsye mahātmanā ,
jayo vāstu vadho vā me kathaṁ vā kṛṣṇa manyase.
89. kāmam vadhyatu me sainyam na aham yotsye mahātmanā
jayaḥ vā astu vadhaḥ vā me katham vā kṛṣṇa manyase
89. me sainyam kāmam vadhyatu; aham mahātmanā na yotsye.
jayaḥ vā vadhaḥ vā me astu.
kṛṣṇa,
vā katham manyase?
89. Let my army be slain, I do not care; but I will not fight with that great-souled one. Whether victory or death befalls me, so be it. O Kṛṣṇa, what is your opinion on this?
श्रीकृष्ण उवाच ।
प्रतिज्ञाय वधं जिष्णो पुरा भीष्मस्य संयुगे ।
क्षत्रधर्मे स्थितः पार्थ कथं नैनं हनिष्यसि ॥९०॥
90. śrīkṛṣṇa uvāca ,
pratijñāya vadhaṁ jiṣṇo purā bhīṣmasya saṁyuge ,
kṣatradharme sthitaḥ pārtha kathaṁ nainaṁ haniṣyasi.
90. śrīkṛṣṇaḥ uvāca pratijñāya vadham jiṣṇo purā bhīṣmasya
saṃyuge kṣatradharme sthitaḥ pārtha katham na enam haniṣyasi
90. śrīkṛṣṇaḥ uvāca: jiṣṇo pārtha! purā saṃyuge bhīṣmasya vadham pratijñāya,
kṣatradharme sthitaḥ (san),
katham enam na haniṣyasi?
90. Śrī Kṛṣṇa said: "O Victorious One (Arjuna), you who have previously sworn to slay Bhīṣma in battle, and who abide by the warrior's natural law (dharma), O son of Pṛthā, how can you now refuse to kill him?"
पातयैनं रथात्पार्थ वज्राहतमिव द्रुमम् ।
नाहत्वा युधि गाङ्गेयं विजयस्ते भविष्यति ॥९१॥
91. pātayainaṁ rathātpārtha vajrāhatamiva drumam ,
nāhatvā yudhi gāṅgeyaṁ vijayaste bhaviṣyati.
91. pātaya enam rathāt pārtha vajrāhatam iva drumam
na āhatvā yudhi gāṅgeyam vijayaḥ te bhaviṣyati
91. pārtha enam rathāt vajrāhatam drumam iva pātaya
yudhi gāṅgeyam āhatvā na te vijayaḥ bhaviṣyati
91. O Pārtha, strike him down from the chariot, like a tree struck by a thunderbolt. Your victory will not be achieved without defeating Gaṅgeya in battle.
दिष्टमेतत्पुरा देवैर्भविष्यत्यवशस्य ते ।
हन्ता भीष्मस्य पूर्वेन्द्र इति तन्न तदन्यथा ॥९२॥
92. diṣṭametatpurā devairbhaviṣyatyavaśasya te ,
hantā bhīṣmasya pūrvendra iti tanna tadanyathā.
92. diṣṭam etat purā devaiḥ bhaviṣyati avaśasya te
hantā bhīṣmasya pūrva-indraḥ iti tat na tat anyathā
92. etat purā devaiḥ te avaśasya diṣṭam bhaviṣyati
pūrva-indraḥ bhīṣmasya hantā iti tat tat anyathā na
92. This has been decreed by the gods long ago, that for you, the one who feels helpless, "the former Indra (pūrva-indra) will be the slayer of Bhīṣma." Therefore, it will not be otherwise.
न हि भीष्मं दुराधर्षं व्यात्ताननमिवान्तकम् ।
त्वदन्यः शक्नुयाद्धन्तुमपि वज्रधरः स्वयम् ॥९३॥
93. na hi bhīṣmaṁ durādharṣaṁ vyāttānanamivāntakam ,
tvadanyaḥ śaknuyāddhantumapi vajradharaḥ svayam.
93. na hi bhīṣmam durādharṣam vyātta-ānanam iva antakam
tvat anyaḥ śaknuyāt hantum api vajradharaḥ svayam
93. hi na anyaḥ tvat vajradharaḥ api svayam antakam iva
vyātta-ānanam durādharṣam bhīṣmam hantum śaknuyāt
93. Indeed, no one other than you would be able to kill Bhīṣma, who is unconquerable, like Death (Antaka) with his mouth agape; not even Indra (vajradhara) himself.
जहि भीष्मं महाबाहो शृणु चेदं वचो मम ।
यथोवाच पुरा शक्रं महाबुद्धिर्बृहस्पतिः ॥९४॥
94. jahi bhīṣmaṁ mahābāho śṛṇu cedaṁ vaco mama ,
yathovāca purā śakraṁ mahābuddhirbṛhaspatiḥ.
94. jahi bhīṣmam mahābāho śṛṇu ca idam vacaḥ mama
yathā uvāca purā śakram mahābuddhiḥ bṛhaspatiḥ
94. mahābāho bhīṣmam jahi ca mama idam vacaḥ śṛṇu
yathā purā mahābuddhiḥ bṛhaspatiḥ śakram uvāca
94. O mighty-armed one, strike down Bhīṣma, and listen to these words of mine, just as the greatly intelligent Bṛhaspati spoke to Indra (Śakra) long ago.
ज्यायांसमपि चेच्छक्र गुणैरपि समन्वितम् ।
आततायिनमामन्त्र्य हन्याद्घातकमागतम् ॥९५॥
95. jyāyāṁsamapi cecchakra guṇairapi samanvitam ,
ātatāyinamāmantrya hanyādghātakamāgatam.
95. jyāyāṃsam api cet śakra guṇaiḥ api samanvitam
ātatāyinam āmantrya hanyāt ghātakam āgatam
95. cet śakra jyāyāṃsam api guṇaiḥ api samanvitam
āgatam ātatāyinam ghātakam āmantrya hanyāt
95. O Śakra, even if an individual is superior and endowed with virtues, if he comes as an aggressor (ātatāyin) and killer, one should confront him and then slay him.
शाश्वतोऽयं स्थितो धर्मः क्षत्रियाणां धनंजय ।
योद्धव्यं रक्षितव्यं च यष्टव्यं चानसूयुभिः ॥९६॥
96. śāśvato'yaṁ sthito dharmaḥ kṣatriyāṇāṁ dhanaṁjaya ,
yoddhavyaṁ rakṣitavyaṁ ca yaṣṭavyaṁ cānasūyubhiḥ.
96. śāśvataḥ ayam sthitaḥ dharmaḥ kṣatriyāṇām dhanaṃjaya
yoddhavyam rakṣitavyam ca yaṣṭavyam ca anasūyubhiḥ
96. dhanaṃjaya ayam śāśvataḥ sthitaḥ kṣatriyāṇām dharmaḥ
anasūyubhiḥ yoddhavyam ca rakṣitavyam ca yaṣṭavyam ca
96. O Dhanañjaya, this eternal natural law (dharma) is established for Kṣatriyas: they must fight, protect, and perform Vedic rituals (yajña), all without envy.
अर्जुन उवाच ।
शिखण्डी निधनं कृष्ण भीष्मस्य भविता ध्रुवम् ।
दृष्ट्वैव हि सदा भीष्मः पाञ्चाल्यं विनिवर्तते ॥९७॥
97. arjuna uvāca ,
śikhaṇḍī nidhanaṁ kṛṣṇa bhīṣmasya bhavitā dhruvam ,
dṛṣṭvaiva hi sadā bhīṣmaḥ pāñcālyaṁ vinivartate.
97. arjuna uvāca śikhaṇḍī nidhanam kṛṣṇa bhīṣmasya bhavitā
dhruvam dṛṣṭvā eva hi sadā bhīṣmaḥ pāñcālyam vinivartate
97. arjuna uvāca: kṛṣṇa! śikhaṇḍī bhīṣmasya nidhanam dhruvam
bhavitā hi bhīṣmaḥ pāñcālyam dṛṣṭvā eva sadā vinivartate
97. Arjuna said: "O Kṛṣṇa, Śikhaṇḍin will certainly be the death of Bhīṣma. For as soon as Bhīṣma sees Pāñcālya (Śikhaṇḍin), he always retreats."
ते वयं प्रमुखे तस्य स्थापयित्वा शिखण्डिनम् ।
गाङ्गेयं पातयिष्याम उपायेनेति मे मतिः ॥९८॥
98. te vayaṁ pramukhe tasya sthāpayitvā śikhaṇḍinam ,
gāṅgeyaṁ pātayiṣyāma upāyeneti me matiḥ.
98. te vayam pramukhe tasya sthāpayitvā śikhaṇḍinam
gāṅgeyam pātayiṣyāmaḥ upāyena iti me matiḥ
98. vayam te tasya pramukhe śikhaṇḍinam sthāpayitvā
upāyena gāṅgeyam pātayiṣyāmaḥ iti me matiḥ
98. We, by positioning Śikhaṇḍin in front of him, will fell Gāṅgeya (Bhīṣma) by this stratagem. This is my conviction.
अहमन्यान्महेष्वासान्वारयिष्यामि सायकैः ।
शिखण्ड्यपि युधां श्रेष्ठो भीष्ममेवाभियास्यतु ॥९९॥
99. ahamanyānmaheṣvāsānvārayiṣyāmi sāyakaiḥ ,
śikhaṇḍyapi yudhāṁ śreṣṭho bhīṣmamevābhiyāsyatu.
99. aham anyān maheṣvāsān vārayiṣyāmi sāyakaiḥ śikhaṇḍī
api yudhām śreṣṭhaḥ bhīṣmam eva abhiyāsyatu
99. aham sāyakaiḥ anyān maheṣvāsān vārayiṣyāmi śikhaṇḍī
api yudhām śreṣṭhaḥ bhīṣmam eva abhiyāsyatu
99. I will hold back the other great archers with my arrows. As for Shikhandi, the foremost among warriors, let him indeed proceed to attack Bhishma.
श्रुतं ते कुरुमुख्यस्य नाहं हन्यां शिखण्डिनम् ।
कन्या ह्येषा पुरा जाता पुरुषः समपद्यत ॥१००॥
100. śrutaṁ te kurumukhyasya nāhaṁ hanyāṁ śikhaṇḍinam ,
kanyā hyeṣā purā jātā puruṣaḥ samapadyata.
100. śrutam te kurumukhyasya na aham hanyām śikhaṇḍinam
kanyā hi eṣā purā jātā puruṣaḥ samapadyata
100. kurumukhyasya te śrutam aham śikhaṇḍinam na
hanyām hi eṣā purā kanyā jātā puruṣaḥ samapadyata
100. You have heard the vow of the chief of the Kurus (Bhishma): I should not kill Shikhandi, for this one was born a girl previously and then became a man (puruṣa).
संजय उवाच ।
इत्येवं निश्चयं कृत्वा पाण्डवाः सहमाधवाः ।
शयनानि यथास्वानि भेजिरे पुरुषर्षभाः ॥१०१॥
101. saṁjaya uvāca ,
ityevaṁ niścayaṁ kṛtvā pāṇḍavāḥ sahamādhavāḥ ,
śayanāni yathāsvāni bhejire puruṣarṣabhāḥ.
101. saṃjaya uvāca iti evam niścayam kṛtvā pāṇḍavāḥ
sahamādhavāḥ śayanāni yathāsvāni bhejire puruṣarṣabhāḥ
101. saṃjaya uvāca iti evam niścayam kṛtvā sahamādhavāḥ
puruṣarṣabhāḥ pāṇḍavāḥ yathāsvāni śayanāni bhejire
101. Sanjaya said: "Having thus made this decision, the Pandavas, accompanied by Madhava (Krishna), those bulls among men, went to their respective resting places."
