संजय उवाच ।
पतितं प्रेक्ष्य यन्तारं शल्यः सर्वायसीं गदाम् ।
आदाय तरसा राजंस्तस्थौ गिरिरिवाचलः ॥१॥
1. saṁjaya uvāca ,
patitaṁ prekṣya yantāraṁ śalyaḥ sarvāyasīṁ gadām ,
ādāya tarasā rājaṁstasthau giririvācalaḥ.
तं दीप्तमिव कालाग्निं पाशहस्तमिवान्तकम् ।
सशृङ्गमिव कैलासं सवज्रमिव वासवम् ॥२॥
2. taṁ dīptamiva kālāgniṁ pāśahastamivāntakam ,
saśṛṅgamiva kailāsaṁ savajramiva vāsavam.
सशूलमिव हर्यक्षं वने मत्तमिव द्विपम् ।
जवेनाभ्यपतद्भीमः प्रगृह्य महतीं गदाम् ॥३॥
3. saśūlamiva haryakṣaṁ vane mattamiva dvipam ,
javenābhyapatadbhīmaḥ pragṛhya mahatīṁ gadām.
ततः शङ्खप्रणादश्च तूर्याणां च सहस्रशः ।
सिंहनादश्च संजज्ञे शूराणां हर्षवर्धनः ॥४॥
4. tataḥ śaṅkhapraṇādaśca tūryāṇāṁ ca sahasraśaḥ ,
siṁhanādaśca saṁjajñe śūrāṇāṁ harṣavardhanaḥ.
प्रेक्षन्तः सर्वतस्तौ हि योधा योधमहाद्विपौ ।
तावकाश्च परे चैव साधु साध्वित्यथाब्रुवन् ॥५॥
5. prekṣantaḥ sarvatastau hi yodhā yodhamahādvipau ,
tāvakāśca pare caiva sādhu sādhvityathābruvan.

5. From all sides, the warriors, seeing those two who were like great elephants among fighters, indeed, both your people and the others then exclaimed, 'Excellent! Excellent!'
न हि मद्राधिपादन्यो रामाद्वा यदुनन्दनात् ।
सोढुमुत्सहते वेगं भीमसेनस्य संयुगे ॥६॥
6. na hi madrādhipādanyo rāmādvā yadunandanāt ,
soḍhumutsahate vegaṁ bhīmasenasya saṁyuge.
6. na hi madradhipāt anyaḥ rāmāt vā yadunandanāt
soḍhum utsahate vegam bhīmasenasya saṃyuge
6. hi madradhipāt vā rāmāt vā yadunandanāt anyaḥ
saṃyuge bhīmasenasya vegam soḍhum na utsahate
6. Indeed, no one other than the king of Madras (Madrarāja), or Rāma, or the delight of the Yadus (Balarāma), is able to endure Bhimasena's might in battle.
तथा मद्राधिपस्यापि गदावेगं महात्मनः ।
सोढुमुत्सहते नान्यो योधो युधि वृकोदरात् ॥७॥
7. tathā madrādhipasyāpi gadāvegaṁ mahātmanaḥ ,
soḍhumutsahate nānyo yodho yudhi vṛkodarāt.

soḍhum utsahate na anyaḥ yodhaḥ yudhi vṛkodarāt

7. Similarly, in battle, no other warrior (yodha) except Vṛkodara (Bhīma) is able to endure the mace's might of the great-souled (mahātman) king of Madras (Madrarāja).
तौ वृषाविव नर्दन्तौ मण्डलानि विचेरतुः ।
आवल्गितौ गदाहस्तौ मद्रराजवृकोदरौ ॥८॥
8. tau vṛṣāviva nardantau maṇḍalāni viceratuḥ ,
āvalgitau gadāhastau madrarājavṛkodarau.

8. Those two, Madrarāja and Vṛkodara (Bhīma), holding maces in their hands, roaring like two bulls, and leaping, moved about in circles.
मण्डलावर्तमार्गेषु गदाविहरणेषु च ।
निर्विशेषमभूद्युद्धं तयोः पुरुषसिंहयोः ॥९॥
9. maṇḍalāvartamārgeṣu gadāviharaṇeṣu ca ,
nirviśeṣamabhūdyuddhaṁ tayoḥ puruṣasiṁhayoḥ.

nirviśeṣam abhūt yuddham tayoḥ puruṣasiṃhayoḥ

9. In the paths of circular maneuvers and in the wielding of their maces, the battle between those two mighty warriors was indistinguishable.
तप्तहेममयैः शुभ्रैर्बभूव भयवर्धनी ।
अग्निज्वालैरिवाविद्धा पट्टैः शल्यस्य सा गदा ॥१०॥
10. taptahemamayaiḥ śubhrairbabhūva bhayavardhanī ,
agnijvālairivāviddhā paṭṭaiḥ śalyasya sā gadā.

agnijvālaiḥ iva āviddhā paṭṭaiḥ śalyasya sā gadā

10. That mace (gadā) of Shalya, adorned with brilliant, molten gold plates and appearing as if pierced by flames of fire, became a terrifying sight.
तथैव चरतो मार्गान्मण्डलेषु महात्मनः ।
विद्युदभ्रप्रतीकाशा भीमस्य शुशुभे गदा ॥११॥
11. tathaiva carato mārgānmaṇḍaleṣu mahātmanaḥ ,
vidyudabhrapratīkāśā bhīmasya śuśubhe gadā.
11. tathaiva carataḥ mārgān maṇḍaleṣu mahātmanaḥ
vidyudabhrapratīkāśā bhīmasya śuśubhe gadā

11. Similarly, as the great warrior (mahātman) moved in circular paths, Bhima's mace (gadā) shone splendidly, resembling lightning and a cloud.
ताडिता मद्रराजेन भीमस्य गदया गदा ।
दीप्यमानेव वै राजन्ससृजे पावकार्चिषः ॥१२॥
12. tāḍitā madrarājena bhīmasya gadayā gadā ,
dīpyamāneva vai rājansasṛje pāvakārciṣaḥ.

12. O King, when Bhima's mace (gadā) was struck by the mace (gadayā) of the King of Madras, it truly emitted flames of fire (pāvakārciṣaḥ), as if shining brightly.
तथा भीमेन शल्यस्य ताडिता गदया गदा ।
अङ्गारवर्षं मुमुचे तदद्भुतमिवाभवत् ॥१३॥
13. tathā bhīmena śalyasya tāḍitā gadayā gadā ,
aṅgāravarṣaṁ mumuce tadadbhutamivābhavat.
दन्तैरिव महानागौ शृङ्गैरिव महर्षभौ ।
तोत्त्रैरिव तदान्योन्यं गदाग्राभ्यां निजघ्नतुः ॥१४॥
14. dantairiva mahānāgau śṛṅgairiva maharṣabhau ,
tottrairiva tadānyonyaṁ gadāgrābhyāṁ nijaghnatuḥ.
तौ गदानिहतैर्गात्रैः क्षणेन रुधिरोक्षितौ ।
प्रेक्षणीयतरावास्तां पुष्पिताविव किंशुकौ ॥१५॥
15. tau gadānihatairgātraiḥ kṣaṇena rudhirokṣitau ,
prekṣaṇīyatarāvāstāṁ puṣpitāviva kiṁśukau.
गदया मद्रराजेन सव्यदक्षिणमाहतः ।
भीमसेनो महाबाहुर्न चचालाचलो यथा ॥१६॥
16. gadayā madrarājena savyadakṣiṇamāhataḥ ,
bhīmaseno mahābāhurna cacālācalo yathā.
तथा भीमगदावेगैस्ताड्यमानो मुहुर्मुहुः ।
शल्यो न विव्यथे राजन्दन्तिनेवाहतो गिरिः ॥१७॥
17. tathā bhīmagadāvegaistāḍyamāno muhurmuhuḥ ,
śalyo na vivyathe rājandantinevāhato giriḥ.
शुश्रुवे दिक्षु सर्वासु तयोः पुरुषसिंहयोः ।
गदानिपातसंह्रादो वज्रयोरिव निस्वनः ॥१८॥
18. śuśruve dikṣu sarvāsu tayoḥ puruṣasiṁhayoḥ ,
gadānipātasaṁhrādo vajrayoriva nisvanaḥ.
निवृत्य तु महावीर्यौ समुच्छ्रितगदावुभौ ।
पुनरन्तरमार्गस्थौ मण्डलानि विचेरतुः ॥१९॥
19. nivṛtya tu mahāvīryau samucchritagadāvubhau ,
punarantaramārgasthau maṇḍalāni viceratuḥ.
अथाभ्येत्य पदान्यष्टौ संनिपातोऽभवत्तयोः ।
उद्यम्य लोहदण्डाभ्यामतिमानुषकर्मणोः ॥२०॥
20. athābhyetya padānyaṣṭau saṁnipāto'bhavattayoḥ ,
udyamya lohadaṇḍābhyāmatimānuṣakarmaṇoḥ.
प्रार्थयानौ तदान्योऽन्यं मण्डलानि विचेरतुः ।
क्रियाविशेषं कृतिनौ दर्शयामासतुस्तदा ॥२१॥
21. prārthayānau tadānyo'nyaṁ maṇḍalāni viceratuḥ ,
kriyāviśeṣaṁ kṛtinau darśayāmāsatustadā.
अथोद्यम्य गदे घोरे सशृङ्गाविव पर्वतौ ।
तावाजघ्नतुरन्योन्यं यथा भूमिचलेऽचलौ ॥२२॥
22. athodyamya gade ghore saśṛṅgāviva parvatau ,
tāvājaghnaturanyonyaṁ yathā bhūmicale'calau.
तौ परस्परवेगाच्च गदाभ्यां च भृशाहतौ ।
युगपत्पेततुर्वीरावुभाविन्द्रध्वजाविव ॥२३॥
23. tau parasparavegācca gadābhyāṁ ca bhṛśāhatau ,
yugapatpetaturvīrāvubhāvindradhvajāviva.
उभयोः सेनयोर्वीरास्तदा हाहाकृतोऽभवन् ।
भृशं मर्मण्यभिहतावुभावास्तां सुविह्वलौ ॥२४॥
24. ubhayoḥ senayorvīrāstadā hāhākṛto'bhavan ,
bhṛśaṁ marmaṇyabhihatāvubhāvāstāṁ suvihvalau.
ततः सगदमारोप्य मद्राणामृषभं रथे ।
अपोवाह कृपः शल्यं तूर्णमायोधनादपि ॥२५॥
25. tataḥ sagadamāropya madrāṇāmṛṣabhaṁ rathe ,
apovāha kṛpaḥ śalyaṁ tūrṇamāyodhanādapi.
क्षीबवद्विह्वलत्वात्तु निमेषात्पुनरुत्थितः ।
भीमसेनो गदापाणिः समाह्वयत मद्रपम् ॥२६॥
26. kṣībavadvihvalatvāttu nimeṣātpunarutthitaḥ ,
bhīmaseno gadāpāṇiḥ samāhvayata madrapam.
ततस्तु तावकाः शूरा नानाशस्त्रसमायुताः ।
नानावादित्रशब्देन पाण्डुसेनामयोधयन् ॥२७॥
27. tatastu tāvakāḥ śūrā nānāśastrasamāyutāḥ ,
nānāvāditraśabdena pāṇḍusenāmayodhayan.
भुजावुच्छ्रित्य शस्त्रं च शब्देन महता ततः ।
अभ्यद्रवन्महाराज दुर्योधनपुरोगमाः ॥२८॥
28. bhujāvucchritya śastraṁ ca śabdena mahatā tataḥ ,
abhyadravanmahārāja duryodhanapurogamāḥ.
तदनीकमभिप्रेक्ष्य ततस्ते पाण्डुनन्दनाः ।
प्रययुः सिंहनादेन दुर्योधनवधेप्सया ॥२९॥
29. tadanīkamabhiprekṣya tataste pāṇḍunandanāḥ ,
prayayuḥ siṁhanādena duryodhanavadhepsayā.
तेषामापततां तूर्णं पुत्रस्ते भरतर्षभ ।
प्रासेन चेकितानं वै विव्याध हृदये भृशम् ॥३०॥
30. teṣāmāpatatāṁ tūrṇaṁ putraste bharatarṣabha ,
prāsena cekitānaṁ vai vivyādha hṛdaye bhṛśam.
स पपात रथोपस्थे तव पुत्रेण ताडितः ।
रुधिरौघपरिक्लिन्नः प्रविश्य विपुलं तमः ॥३१॥
31. sa papāta rathopasthe tava putreṇa tāḍitaḥ ,
rudhiraughapariklinnaḥ praviśya vipulaṁ tamaḥ.
चेकितानं हतं दृष्ट्वा पाण्डवानां महारथाः ।
प्रसक्तमभ्यवर्षन्त शरवर्षाणि भागशः ॥३२॥
32. cekitānaṁ hataṁ dṛṣṭvā pāṇḍavānāṁ mahārathāḥ ,
prasaktamabhyavarṣanta śaravarṣāṇi bhāgaśaḥ.
तावकानामनीकेषु पाण्डवा जितकाशिनः ।
व्यचरन्त महाराज प्रेक्षणीयाः समन्ततः ॥३३॥
33. tāvakānāmanīkeṣu pāṇḍavā jitakāśinaḥ ,
vyacaranta mahārāja prekṣaṇīyāḥ samantataḥ.
कृपश्च कृतवर्मा च सौबलश्च महाबलः ।
अयोधयन्धर्मराजं मद्रराजपुरस्कृताः ॥३४॥
34. kṛpaśca kṛtavarmā ca saubalaśca mahābalaḥ ,
ayodhayandharmarājaṁ madrarājapuraskṛtāḥ.
भारद्वाजस्य हन्तारं भूरिवीर्यपराक्रमम् ।
दुर्योधनो महाराज धृष्टद्युम्नमयोधयत् ॥३५॥
35. bhāradvājasya hantāraṁ bhūrivīryaparākramam ,
duryodhano mahārāja dhṛṣṭadyumnamayodhayat.
त्रिसाहस्रा रथा राजंस्तव पुत्रेण चोदिताः ।
अयोधयन्त विजयं द्रोणपुत्रपुरस्कृताः ॥३६॥
36. trisāhasrā rathā rājaṁstava putreṇa coditāḥ ,
ayodhayanta vijayaṁ droṇaputrapuraskṛtāḥ.
विजये धृतसंकल्पाः समभित्यक्तजीविताः ।
प्राविशंस्तावका राजन्हंसा इव महत्सरः ॥३७॥
37. vijaye dhṛtasaṁkalpāḥ samabhityaktajīvitāḥ ,
prāviśaṁstāvakā rājanhaṁsā iva mahatsaraḥ.

37. rājan,

37. O King, your warriors, resolute for victory and having renounced their lives, entered a great lake like swans.
ततो युद्धमभूद्घोरं परस्परवधैषिणाम् ।
अन्योन्यवधसंयुक्तमन्योन्यप्रीतिवर्धनम् ॥३८॥
38. tato yuddhamabhūdghoraṁ parasparavadhaiṣiṇām ,
anyonyavadhasaṁyuktamanyonyaprītivardhanam.
38. tataḥ yuddham abhūt ghoram parasparavadhaiṣiṇām
anyonyavadhsaṃyuktam anyonyaprītivardhanam
38. tataḥ parasparavadhaiṣiṇām ghoram yuddham abhūt

38. Then a dreadful battle ensued among those who desired to slay each other, a battle characterized by mutual destruction and increasing mutual delight in combat.
तस्मिन्प्रवृत्ते संग्रामे राजन्वीरवरक्षये ।
अनिलेनेरितं घोरमुत्तस्थौ पार्थिवं रजः ॥३९॥
39. tasminpravṛtte saṁgrāme rājanvīravarakṣaye ,
anileneritaṁ ghoramuttasthau pārthivaṁ rajaḥ.

anilena īritam ghoram uttasthau pārthivam rajaḥ

39. O King, as that battle, which involved the destruction of the foremost heroes, commenced, a dreadful cloud of earthly dust, stirred by the wind, rose up.
श्रवणान्नामधेयानां पाण्डवानां च कीर्तनात् ।
परस्परं विजानीमो ये चायुध्यन्नभीतवत् ॥४०॥
40. śravaṇānnāmadheyānāṁ pāṇḍavānāṁ ca kīrtanāt ,
parasparaṁ vijānīmo ye cāyudhyannabhītavat.
40. śravaṇāt nāmadheyānām pāṇḍavānām ca kīrtanāt
parasparam vijānīmaḥ ye ca āyudhyan abhītavat
40. nāmadheyānām pāṇḍavānām ca śravaṇāt ca kīrtanāt,
ye abhītavat āyudhyan ca,
parasparam vijānīmaḥ
40. By hearing the names, by the renown of the Pāṇḍavas, and by (observing) those who fought fearlessly, we distinguish among them.
तद्रजः पुरुषव्याघ्र शोणितेन प्रशामितम् ।
दिशश्च विमला जज्ञुस्तस्मिन्रजसि शामिते ॥४१॥
41. tadrajaḥ puruṣavyāghra śoṇitena praśāmitam ,
diśaśca vimalā jajñustasminrajasi śāmite.
41. tat rajaḥ puruṣavyāghra śoṇitena praśāmitam
diśaḥ ca vimalāḥ jajñuḥ tasmin rajasi śāmite
41. puruṣavyāghra tat rajaḥ śoṇitena praśāmitam.
tasmin rajasi śāmite ca diśaḥ vimalāḥ jajñuḥ.
41. O tiger among men, that dust was completely settled by blood. When that dust had settled, the directions became clear.
तथा प्रवृत्ते संग्रामे घोररूपे भयानके ।
तावकानां परेषां च नासीत्कश्चित्पराङ्मुखः ॥४२॥
42. tathā pravṛtte saṁgrāme ghorarūpe bhayānake ,
tāvakānāṁ pareṣāṁ ca nāsītkaścitparāṅmukhaḥ.
42. tathā pravṛtte saṅgrāme ghorarūpe bhayānake
tāvakānām pareṣām ca na āsīt kaścit parāṅmukhaḥ
42. tathā ghorarūpe bhayānake saṅgrāme pravṛtte,
tāvakānām ca pareṣām kaścit parāṅmukhaḥ na āsīt.
42. In that battle, which was thus dreadful and terrifying, no one, neither from your side nor from the enemy's side, turned away in retreat.
ब्रह्मलोकपरा भूत्वा प्रार्थयन्तो जयं युधि ।
सुयुद्धेन पराक्रान्ता नराः स्वर्गमभीप्सवः ॥४३॥
43. brahmalokaparā bhūtvā prārthayanto jayaṁ yudhi ,
suyuddhena parākrāntā narāḥ svargamabhīpsavaḥ.
43. brahmalokaparāḥ bhūtvā prārthayantaḥ jayam yudhi
suyyuddhena parākrāntāḥ narāḥ svargam abhīpsavaḥ
43. brahmalokaparāḥ bhūtvā,
yudhi jayam prārthayantaḥ,
suyyuddhena parākrāntāḥ,
svargam abhīpsavaḥ narāḥ.
43. Those men, with their ultimate aim being the realm of Brahman (brahmaloka) and desiring victory in battle, fought valiantly with great skill, yearning for heaven.
भर्तृपिण्डविमोक्षार्थं भर्तृकार्यविनिश्चिताः ।
स्वर्गसंसक्तमनसो योधा युयुधिरे तदा ॥४४॥
44. bhartṛpiṇḍavimokṣārthaṁ bhartṛkāryaviniścitāḥ ,
svargasaṁsaktamanaso yodhā yuyudhire tadā.
44. bhartṛpiṇḍavimokṣārtham bhartṛkāryaviniścitāḥ
svargasaṃsaktamanasaḥ yodhāḥ yuyudhire tadā
44. tadā bhartṛpiṇḍavimokṣārtham bhartṛkāryaviniścitāḥ svargasaṃsaktamanasaḥ yodhāḥ yuyudhire.
44. At that time, the warriors, determined to fulfill their master's duty and be freed from the obligation of his sustenance, fought with their minds set on heaven.
नानारूपाणि शस्त्राणि विसृजन्तो महारथाः ।
अन्योन्यमभिगर्जन्तः प्रहरन्तः परस्परम् ॥४५॥
45. nānārūpāṇi śastrāṇi visṛjanto mahārathāḥ ,
anyonyamabhigarjantaḥ praharantaḥ parasparam.

anyonyam abhigarjantaḥ praharantaḥ parasparam

45. The great warriors (mahārathas), showering various kinds of weapons, roared at each other and struck one another.
हत विध्यत गृह्णीत प्रहरध्वं निकृन्तत ।
इति स्म वाचः श्रूयन्ते तव तेषां च वै बले ॥४६॥
46. hata vidhyata gṛhṇīta praharadhvaṁ nikṛntata ,
iti sma vācaḥ śrūyante tava teṣāṁ ca vai bale.

iti sma vācaḥ śrūyante tava teṣām ca vai bale
46. tava ca teṣām bale iti vācaḥ sma śrūyante

46. 'Kill! Pierce! Seize! Strike! Cut down!' Such cries were indeed heard in your army and theirs.
ततः शल्यो महाराज धर्मराजं युधिष्ठिरम् ।
विव्याध निशितैर्बाणैर्हन्तुकामो महारथम् ॥४७॥
47. tataḥ śalyo mahārāja dharmarājaṁ yudhiṣṭhiram ,
vivyādha niśitairbāṇairhantukāmo mahāratham.
47. tataḥ śalyaḥ mahārāja dharmarājam yudhiṣṭhiram
vivyādha niśitaiḥ bāṇaiḥ hantukāmaḥ mahāratham
47. mahārāja tataḥ hantukāmaḥ śalyaḥ niśitaiḥ bāṇaiḥ
dharmarājam yudhiṣṭhiram mahāratham vivyādha
47. Then, O great king, Shalya, desirous of killing the great warrior (mahāratha), Yudhishthira, the king of righteousness (dharmarāja), pierced him with sharp arrows.
तस्य पार्थो महाराज नाराचान्वै चतुर्दश ।
मर्माण्युद्दिश्य मर्मज्ञो निचखान हसन्निव ॥४८॥

48. O great king, Partha (Arjuna), an expert in vital spots, aimed at Shalya's vital spots and indeed embedded fourteen iron arrows into him, as if laughing.
तं वार्य पाण्डवं बाणैर्हन्तुकामो महायशाः ।
विव्याध समरे क्रुद्धो बहुभिः कङ्कपत्रिभिः ॥४९॥
49. taṁ vārya pāṇḍavaṁ bāṇairhantukāmo mahāyaśāḥ ,
vivyādha samare kruddho bahubhiḥ kaṅkapatribhiḥ.

49. The greatly renowned [Śalya], enraged and intent on killing the Pāṇḍava (pāṇḍava) [Yudhiṣṭhira], first checked him with arrows, and then pierced him in battle with many arrows feathered with vulture (kaṅka) feathers.
अथ भूयो महाराज शरेण नतपर्वणा ।
युधिष्ठिरं समाजघ्ने सर्वसैन्यस्य पश्यतः ॥५०॥
50. atha bhūyo mahārāja śareṇa nataparvaṇā ,
yudhiṣṭhiraṁ samājaghne sarvasainyasya paśyataḥ.

50. Then again, O great king, [Śalya] struck Yudhiṣṭhira with a straight-flying (nataparvaṇā) arrow, as the entire army (sarvasainya) watched.
धर्मराजोऽपि संक्रुद्धो मद्रराजं महायशाः ।
विव्याध निशितैर्बाणैः कङ्कबर्हिणवाजितैः ॥५१॥
51. dharmarājo'pi saṁkruddho madrarājaṁ mahāyaśāḥ ,
vivyādha niśitairbāṇaiḥ kaṅkabarhiṇavājitaiḥ.

51. The greatly renowned (mahāyaśāḥ) King of (dharma) (dharmarāja) [Yudhiṣṭhira], also very enraged, pierced the King of Madra (madrarāja) [Śalya] with sharp arrows that were feathered with both vulture (kaṅka) and peacock (barhiṇa) feathers.
चन्द्रसेनं च सप्तत्या सूतं च नवभिः शरैः ।
द्रुमसेनं चतुःषष्ट्या निजघान महारथः ॥५२॥
52. candrasenaṁ ca saptatyā sūtaṁ ca navabhiḥ śaraiḥ ,
drumasenaṁ catuḥṣaṣṭyā nijaghāna mahārathaḥ.

52. The great charioteer (mahāratha) [Yudhiṣṭhira] struck Candrasena with seventy [arrows], his charioteer (sūta) with nine arrows, and Drumasena with sixty-four [arrows].
चक्ररक्षे हते शल्यः पाण्डवेन महात्मना ।
निजघान ततो राजंश्चेदीन्वै पञ्चविंशतिम् ॥५३॥
53. cakrarakṣe hate śalyaḥ pāṇḍavena mahātmanā ,
nijaghāna tato rājaṁścedīnvai pañcaviṁśatim.

53. O king, when the wheel-protectors were killed by the great-souled Pandava, Shalya then slew twenty-five Chedis.
सात्यकिं पञ्चविंशत्या भीमसेनं च पञ्चभिः ।
माद्रीपुत्रौ शतेनाजौ विव्याध निशितैः शरैः ॥५४॥
54. sātyakiṁ pañcaviṁśatyā bhīmasenaṁ ca pañcabhiḥ ,
mādrīputrau śatenājau vivyādha niśitaiḥ śaraiḥ.

54. In battle, he (Shalya) pierced Satyaki with twenty-five, Bhimasena with five, and the two sons of Madri with a hundred sharp arrows.
एवं विचरतस्तस्य संग्रामे राजसत्तम ।
संप्रेषयच्छितान्पार्थः शरानाशीविषोपमान् ॥५५॥
55. evaṁ vicaratastasya saṁgrāme rājasattama ,
saṁpreṣayacchitānpārthaḥ śarānāśīviṣopamān.

pārthaḥ śitān āśīviṣopamān śarān saṃpreṣayat

55. O best of kings, as he (Shalya) was thus moving about in battle, Partha (Arjuna) dispatched sharp arrows resembling venomous serpents.
ध्वजाग्रं चास्य समरे कुन्तीपुत्रो युधिष्ठिरः ।
प्रमुखे वर्तमानस्य भल्लेनापहरद्रथात् ॥५६॥
56. dhvajāgraṁ cāsya samare kuntīputro yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ,
pramukhe vartamānasya bhallenāpaharadrathāt.

56. And Yudhishthira, the son of Kunti, in battle, with a crescent-shaped arrow (bhalla), cut off the top of his (Shalya's) banner from the chariot, while he (Shalya) was standing in front.
पाण्डुपुत्रेण वै तस्य केतुं छिन्नं महात्मना ।
निपतन्तमपश्याम गिरिशृङ्गमिवाहतम् ॥५७॥
57. pāṇḍuputreṇa vai tasya ketuṁ chinnaṁ mahātmanā ,
nipatantamapaśyāma giriśṛṅgamivāhatam.

57. Indeed, we saw his banner, cut down by the great-souled son of Pāṇḍu, falling like a shattered mountain peak.
ध्वजं निपतितं दृष्ट्वा पाण्डवं च व्यवस्थितम् ।
संक्रुद्धो मद्रराजोऽभूच्छरवर्षं मुमोच ह ॥५८॥
58. dhvajaṁ nipatitaṁ dṛṣṭvā pāṇḍavaṁ ca vyavasthitam ,
saṁkruddho madrarājo'bhūccharavarṣaṁ mumoca ha.

58. Seeing his banner fallen and the Pāṇḍava (Arjuna) standing firm, the king of Madras (Śalya) became greatly enraged and indeed released a shower of arrows.
शल्यः सायकवर्षेण पर्जन्य इव वृष्टिमान् ।
अभ्यवर्षदमेयात्मा क्षत्रियं क्षत्रियर्षभः ॥५९॥
59. śalyaḥ sāyakavarṣeṇa parjanya iva vṛṣṭimān ,
abhyavarṣadameyātmā kṣatriyaṁ kṣatriyarṣabhaḥ.

59. Śalya, whose spirit (ātman) was immeasurable and who was a bull among warriors (kṣatriyas), showered upon the warrior (Arjuna) with a volley of arrows, just as a rain-cloud (parjanya) showers down rain.
सात्यकिं भीमसेनं च माद्रीपुत्रौ च पाण्डवौ ।
एकैकं पञ्चभिर्विद्ध्वा युधिष्ठिरमपीडयत् ॥६०॥
60. sātyakiṁ bhīmasenaṁ ca mādrīputrau ca pāṇḍavau ,
ekaikaṁ pañcabhirviddhvā yudhiṣṭhiramapīḍayat.

60. Having pierced Satyaki, Bhīmasena, and the two Pāṇḍavas who were sons of Mādrī (Nakula and Sahadeva), each with five arrows, he then afflicted Yudhiṣṭhira.
ततो बाणमयं जालं विततं पाण्डवोरसि ।
अपश्याम महाराज मेघजालमिवोद्गतम् ॥६१॥
61. tato bāṇamayaṁ jālaṁ vitataṁ pāṇḍavorasi ,
apaśyāma mahārāja meghajālamivodgatam.

apaśyāma mahārāja meghajālam iva udgatam

61. Then, O great king, we saw a net of arrows, spread out upon the Pāṇḍava's chest, just like a rising multitude of clouds.
तस्य शल्यो रणे क्रुद्धो बाणैः संनतपर्वभिः ।
दिशः प्रच्छादयामास प्रदिशश्च महारथः ॥६२॥
62. tasya śalyo raṇe kruddho bāṇaiḥ saṁnataparvabhiḥ ,
diśaḥ pracchādayāmāsa pradiśaśca mahārathaḥ.

62. Enraged in battle, that great warrior Śalya covered all the directions and intermediate directions with his well-jointed arrows.
ततो युधिष्ठिरो राजा बाणजालेन पीडितः ।
बभूव हृतविक्रान्तो जम्भो वृत्रहणा यथा ॥६३॥
63. tato yudhiṣṭhiro rājā bāṇajālena pīḍitaḥ ,
babhūva hṛtavikrānto jambho vṛtrahaṇā yathā.

63. Then, King Yudhiṣṭhira, afflicted by the net of arrows, became deprived of his valor, just as Jambha was by Vṛtrahan (Indra).
