वैशंपायन उवाच ।
सा हता सूतपुत्रेण राजपुत्री समज्वलत् ।
वधं कृष्णा परीप्सन्ती सेनावाहस्य भामिनी ।
जगामावासमेवाथ तदा सा द्रुपदात्मजा ॥१॥
1. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
sā hatā sūtaputreṇa rājaputrī samajvalat ,
vadhaṁ kṛṣṇā parīpsantī senāvāhasya bhāminī ,
jagāmāvāsamevātha tadā sā drupadātmajā.

1. Vaiśampāyana said: "She, the princess, having been insulted by the son of a charioteer (Karṇa), blazed up in rage. Draupadi (Kṛṣṇā), the passionate woman, seeking the death of the army commander, then went directly to her dwelling."
कृत्वा शौचं यथान्यायं कृष्णा वै तनुमध्यमा ।
गात्राणि वाससी चैव प्रक्षाल्य सलिलेन सा ॥२॥
2. kṛtvā śaucaṁ yathānyāyaṁ kṛṣṇā vai tanumadhyamā ,
gātrāṇi vāsasī caiva prakṣālya salilena sā.

gātrāṇi vāsasī ca eva prakṣālya salilena sā
2. Having performed the purification (śauca) ritual properly, Draupadi (Kṛṣṇā), the slender-waisted woman, then indeed washed her limbs and her two garments with water.
चिन्तयामास रुदती तस्य दुःखस्य निर्णयम् ।
किं करोमि क्व गच्छामि कथं कार्यं भवेन्मम ॥३॥
3. cintayāmāsa rudatī tasya duḥkhasya nirṇayam ,
kiṁ karomi kva gacchāmi kathaṁ kāryaṁ bhavenmama.
3. cintayāmāsa rudatī tasya duḥkhasya nirṇayaṃ kiṃ
karomi kva gacchāmi kathaṃ kāryaṃ bhavet mama
3. Weeping, she pondered a resolution for that suffering: "What should I do? Where should I go? How can my task be accomplished?"
इत्येवं चिन्तयित्वा सा भीमं वै मनसागमत् ।
नान्यः कर्ता ऋते भीमान्ममाद्य मनसः प्रियम् ॥४॥
4. ityevaṁ cintayitvā sā bhīmaṁ vai manasāgamat ,
nānyaḥ kartā ṛte bhīmānmamādya manasaḥ priyam.
4. iti evam cintayitvā sā bhīmam vai manasā agamat na
anyaḥ kartā ṛte bhīmāt mama adya manasaḥ priyam
4. Having thus reflected, she went to Bhīma in her mind. No one else, apart from Bhīma, could accomplish what is dear to my heart today.
तत उत्थाय रात्रौ सा विहाय शयनं स्वकम् ।
प्राद्रवन्नाथमिच्छन्ती कृष्णा नाथवती सती ।
दुःखेन महता युक्ता मानसेन मनस्विनी ॥५॥
5. tata utthāya rātrau sā vihāya śayanaṁ svakam ,
prādravannāthamicchantī kṛṣṇā nāthavatī satī ,
duḥkhena mahatā yuktā mānasena manasvinī.
5. tataḥ utthāya rātrau sā vihāya
śayanaṃ svakam prādravat nātham
icchanti kṛṣṇā nāthavatī satī duḥkhena
mahatā yuktā mānasena manasvinī
5. Then, having risen at night, she (Draupadī), leaving her own bed, ran, desiring her protector. Kṛṣṇā, a chaste woman (satī) who had a protector, was afflicted by great mental (mānasa) sorrow, though she was a high-minded woman (manasvinī).
सा वै महानसे प्राप्य भीमसेनं शुचिस्मिता ।
सर्वश्वेतेव माहेयी वने जाता त्रिहायनी ।
उपातिष्ठत पाञ्चाली वाशितेव महागजम् ॥६॥
6. sā vai mahānase prāpya bhīmasenaṁ śucismitā ,
sarvaśveteva māheyī vane jātā trihāyanī ,
upātiṣṭhata pāñcālī vāśiteva mahāgajam.

śucismitā sarvaśvetā iva māheyī
vane jātā trihāyanī upātiṣṭhata
pāñcālī vāśitā iva mahāgajam
6. She of the pure smile, Pāñcālī (Draupadī), having found Bhīmasena in the kitchen, approached him. She was like a completely white, three-year-old female buffalo (māheyī) born in the forest, and she approached him like a female elephant in heat (vāśitā) approaches a great elephant.
सा लतेव महाशालं फुल्लं गोमतितीरजम् ।
बाहुभ्यां परिरभ्यैनं प्राबोधयदनिन्दिता ।
सिंहं सुप्तं वने दुर्गे मृगराजवधूरिव ॥७॥
7. sā lateva mahāśālaṁ phullaṁ gomatitīrajam ,
bāhubhyāṁ parirabhyainaṁ prābodhayadaninditā ,
siṁhaṁ suptaṁ vane durge mṛgarājavadhūriva.
7. sā latā iva mahāśālam phullam
gomatītīrajam bāhubhyām parirabhya
enam prābodhayat aninditā siṃham
suptam vane durge mṛgarājavadhūḥ iva
7. The blameless one (aninditā), embracing him with both arms, awakened him. She was like a blooming creeper (latā) clinging to a mighty sāla tree (mahāśālam) on the bank of the Gomati river, and she awakened him just as a lioness (mṛgarājavadhūḥ) awakens a sleeping lion in a formidable forest.
वीणेव मधुराभाषा गान्धारं साधु मूर्च्छिता ।
अभ्यभाषत पाञ्चाली भीमसेनमनिन्दिता ॥८॥
8. vīṇeva madhurābhāṣā gāndhāraṁ sādhu mūrcchitā ,
abhyabhāṣata pāñcālī bhīmasenamaninditā.
8. vīṇā iva madhurābhāṣā gāndhāram sādhu mūrcchitā
abhyabhāṣata pāñcālī bhīmasenam aninditā
8. The blameless Pāñcālī (Draupadī), whose sweet speech was skillfully modulated to the Gāndhāra note like a lute (vīṇā), addressed Bhīmasena.
उत्तिष्ठोत्तिष्ठ किं शेषे भीमसेन यथा मृतः ।
नामृतस्य हि पापीयान्भार्यामालभ्य जीवति ॥९॥
9. uttiṣṭhottiṣṭha kiṁ śeṣe bhīmasena yathā mṛtaḥ ,
nāmṛtasya hi pāpīyānbhāryāmālabhya jīvati.
9. uttiṣṭha uttiṣṭha kim śeṣe bhīmasena yathā mṛtaḥ
na amṛtasya hi pāpīyān bhāryām ālabhya jīvati
9. “Arise! Arise! Why do you lie here like a dead man, Bhīmasena? Indeed, no most wicked man lives after having seized a wife belonging to one who is still alive.”
तस्मिञ्जीवति पापिष्ठे सेनावाहे मम द्विषि ।
तत्कर्म कृतवत्यद्य कथं निद्रां निषेवसे ॥१०॥
10. tasmiñjīvati pāpiṣṭhe senāvāhe mama dviṣi ,
tatkarma kṛtavatyadya kathaṁ nidrāṁ niṣevase.
10. tasmin jīvati pāpiṣṭhe senāvāhe mama dviṣi
tat karma kṛtavati adya katham nidrām niṣevase
10. “My enemy, that most wicked leader of the army, still lives after having committed such an act today. How can you indulge in sleep?”
स संप्रहाय शयनं राजपुत्र्या प्रबोधितः ।
उपातिष्ठत मेघाभः पर्यङ्के सोपसंग्रहे ॥११॥
11. sa saṁprahāya śayanaṁ rājaputryā prabodhitaḥ ,
upātiṣṭhata meghābhaḥ paryaṅke sopasaṁgrahe.
11. sa samprāya śayanam rājaputryā prabodhitaḥ
upātiṣṭhata meghābhaḥ paryaṅke sopasaṃgrahe
11. He, roused by the princess, gave up his sleep. Resembling a cloud, he stood up on the bed with its coverings.
अथाब्रवीद्राजपुत्रीं कौरव्यो महिषीं प्रियाम् ।
केनास्यर्थेन संप्राप्ता त्वरितेव ममान्तिकम् ॥१२॥
12. athābravīdrājaputrīṁ kauravyo mahiṣīṁ priyām ,
kenāsyarthena saṁprāptā tvariteva mamāntikam.
12. atha abravīt rājaputrīm kauravyaḥ mahiṣīm priyām
kena asya arthena saṃprāptā tvaritā iva mama antikam
12. The Kuru ruler then spoke to his dear queen, the princess: "For what purpose have you arrived so hurriedly in my presence?"
न ते प्रकृतिमान्वर्णः कृशा पाण्डुश्च लक्ष्यसे ।
आचक्ष्व परिशेषेण सर्वं विद्यामहं यथा ॥१३॥
13. na te prakṛtimānvarṇaḥ kṛśā pāṇḍuśca lakṣyase ,
ācakṣva pariśeṣeṇa sarvaṁ vidyāmahaṁ yathā.
13. na te prakṛtimān varṇaḥ kṛśā pāṇḍuḥ ca lakṣyase
ācakṣva pariśeṣeṇa sarvam vidyām aham yathā
13. Your complexion is not normal; you appear thin and pale. Explain everything in full detail so that I may understand it completely.
सुखं वा यदि वा दुःखं द्वेष्यं वा यदि वा प्रियम् ।
यथावत्सर्वमाचक्ष्व श्रुत्वा ज्ञास्यामि यत्परम् ॥१४॥
14. sukhaṁ vā yadi vā duḥkhaṁ dveṣyaṁ vā yadi vā priyam ,
yathāvatsarvamācakṣva śrutvā jñāsyāmi yatparam.
14. sukham vā yadi vā duḥkham dveṣyam vā yadi vā priyam
yathāvat sarvam ācakṣva śrutvā jñāsyāmi yat param
14. Whether it is happiness or sorrow, something unpleasant or something dear, tell me everything exactly as it is. After hearing it, I will understand what is most important.
अहमेव हि ते कृष्णे विश्वास्यः सर्वकर्मसु ।
अहमापत्सु चापि त्वां मोक्षयामि पुनः पुनः ॥१५॥
15. ahameva hi te kṛṣṇe viśvāsyaḥ sarvakarmasu ,
ahamāpatsu cāpi tvāṁ mokṣayāmi punaḥ punaḥ.
15. aham eva hi te kṛṣṇe viśvāsyaḥ sarvakarmasu
aham āpatsu ca api tvām mokṣayāmi punaḥ punaḥ
15. Indeed, O Kṛṣṇā, I alone am trustworthy for you in all matters. And I will certainly rescue you again and again from calamities.
शीघ्रमुक्त्वा यथाकामं यत्ते कार्यं विवक्षितम् ।
गच्छ वै शयनायैव पुरा नान्योऽवबुध्यते ॥१६॥
16. śīghramuktvā yathākāmaṁ yatte kāryaṁ vivakṣitam ,
gaccha vai śayanāyaiva purā nānyo'vabudhyate.
16. śīghram uktvā yathā-kāmam yat te kāryam vivakṣitam
gaccha vai śayanāya eva purā na anyaḥ avabudhyate
16. Quickly state whatever task you wish to be done, as you desire. Then go to sleep, before anyone else becomes aware.
