उत्तङ्क उवाच ।
अभिजानामि जगतः कर्तारं त्वां जनार्दन ।
नूनं भवत्प्रसादोऽयमिति मे नास्ति संशयः ॥१॥
1. uttaṅka uvāca ,
abhijānāmi jagataḥ kartāraṁ tvāṁ janārdana ,
nūnaṁ bhavatprasādo'yamiti me nāsti saṁśayaḥ.

1. Uttanka said: "O Janardana, I recognize you as the creator of the universe. Surely, this is due to your grace, and I have no doubt about it."
चित्तं च सुप्रसन्नं मे त्वद्भावगतमच्युत ।
विनिवृत्तश्च मे कोप इति विद्धि परंतप ॥२॥
2. cittaṁ ca suprasannaṁ me tvadbhāvagatamacyuta ,
vinivṛttaśca me kopa iti viddhi paraṁtapa.
2. cittam ca suprasannam me tvat bhāva gatam acyuta
vinivṛttaḥ ca me kopaḥ iti viddhi parantapa
2. acyuta me cittam tvat bhāva gatam ca suprasannam
parantapa me kopaḥ vinivṛttaḥ ca iti viddhi
2. "O Acyuta, my mind is now very serene, immersed in your true being (bhāva). O scorcher of foes (parantapa), know that my anger has entirely subsided."
यदि त्वनुग्रहं कंचित्त्वत्तोऽर्होऽहं जनार्दन ।
द्रष्टुमिच्छामि ते रूपमैश्वरं तन्निदर्शय ॥३॥
3. yadi tvanugrahaṁ kaṁcittvatto'rho'haṁ janārdana ,
draṣṭumicchāmi te rūpamaiśvaraṁ tannidarśaya.
3. yadi tu anugraham kañcit tvattaḥ arhaḥ aham janārdana
draṣṭum icchāmi te rūpam aiśvaram tat nidarśaya
3. janārdana yadi tu aham tvattaḥ kañcit anugraham
arhaḥ te aiśvaram rūpam draṣṭum icchāmi tat nidarśaya
3. "O Janardana, if I am truly worthy of any favor from you, I wish to see your divine form. Please reveal that to me."
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
ततः स तस्मै प्रीतात्मा दर्शयामास तद्वपुः ।
शाश्वतं वैष्णवं धीमान्ददृशे यद्धनंजयः ॥४॥
4. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
tataḥ sa tasmai prītātmā darśayāmāsa tadvapuḥ ,
śāśvataṁ vaiṣṇavaṁ dhīmāndadṛśe yaddhanaṁjayaḥ.
4. vaiśaṃpāyana uvāca tataḥ saḥ tasmai prītātmā darśayāmāsa
tat vapuḥ śāśvatam vaiṣṇavam dhīmān dadṛśe yat dhanañjayaḥ

4. Vaishampayana said: "Then, that wise one (dhīmān), with a delighted inner self (ātman), showed him that eternal form of Vishnu (vaiṣṇava) which Dhananjaya had seen."
स ददर्श महात्मानं विश्वरूपं महाभुजम् ।
विस्मयं च ययौ विप्रस्तद्दृष्ट्वा रूपमैश्वरम् ॥५॥
5. sa dadarśa mahātmānaṁ viśvarūpaṁ mahābhujam ,
vismayaṁ ca yayau viprastaddṛṣṭvā rūpamaiśvaram.
5. sa dadarśa mahātmānam viśvarūpam mahābhujam
vismayam ca yayau vipraḥ tat dṛṣṭvā rūpam aiśvaram
5. vipraḥ sa mahātmānam viśvarūpam mahābhujam
dṛṣṭvā tat aiśvaram rūpam ca vismayam yayau
5. He beheld the great-souled one, who possessed a universal form and mighty arms. The Brahmin was filled with astonishment upon seeing that divine form.
उत्तङ्क उवाच ।
विश्वकर्मन्नमस्तेऽस्तु यस्य ते रूपमीदृशम् ।
पद्भ्यां ते पृथिवी व्याप्ता शिरसा चावृतं नभः ॥६॥
6. uttaṅka uvāca ,
viśvakarmannamaste'stu yasya te rūpamīdṛśam ,
padbhyāṁ te pṛthivī vyāptā śirasā cāvṛtaṁ nabhaḥ.
6. uttaṅkaḥ uvāca viśvakarman namaḥ te astu yasya te rūpam
īdṛśam padbhyām te pṛthivī vyāptā śirasā ca āvṛtam nabhaḥ
6. uttaṅkaḥ uvāca viśvakarman te namaḥ astu.
yasya te rūpam īdṛśam,
te padbhyām pṛthivī vyāptā,
ca śirasā nabhaḥ āvṛtam
6. Uttanka said: "O Viśvakarman, homage to you, whose form is so vast! The earth is encompassed by your feet, and the sky is covered by your head."
द्यावापृथिव्योर्यन्मध्यं जठरेण तदावृतम् ।
भुजाभ्यामावृताश्चाशास्त्वमिदं सर्वमच्युत ॥७॥
7. dyāvāpṛthivyoryanmadhyaṁ jaṭhareṇa tadāvṛtam ,
bhujābhyāmāvṛtāścāśāstvamidaṁ sarvamacyuta.
7. dyāvāpṛthivyoḥ yat madhyam jaṭhareṇa tat āvṛtam
bhujābhyām āvṛtāḥ ca āśāḥ tvam idam sarvam acyuta
7. acyuta dyāvāpṛthivyoḥ yat madhyam tat jaṭhareṇa āvṛtam.
ca bhujābhyām āśāḥ āvṛtāḥ.
tvam idam sarvam
7. Whatever lies between heaven and earth is enveloped by your belly; and the directions are covered by your two arms. O Acyuta, you are all of this.
संहरस्व पुनर्देव रूपमक्षय्यमुत्तमम् ।
पुनस्त्वां स्वेन रूपेण द्रष्टुमिच्छामि शाश्वतम् ॥८॥
8. saṁharasva punardeva rūpamakṣayyamuttamam ,
punastvāṁ svena rūpeṇa draṣṭumicchāmi śāśvatam.
8. saṃharasva punaḥ deva rūpam akṣayyam uttamam
punaḥ tvām svena rūpeṇa draṣṭum icchāmi śāśvatam
8. deva punaḥ akṣayyam uttamam rūpam saṃharasva.
punaḥ tvām śāśvatam svena rūpeṇa draṣṭum icchāmi
8. O God, please withdraw this indestructible and supreme form. I wish to see you again in your own eternal form.
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
तमुवाच प्रसन्नात्मा गोविन्दो जनमेजय ।
वरं वृणीष्वेति तदा तमुत्तङ्कोऽब्रवीदिदम् ॥९॥
9. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
tamuvāca prasannātmā govindo janamejaya ,
varaṁ vṛṇīṣveti tadā tamuttaṅko'bravīdidam.
9. vaiśampāyana uvāca tam uvāca prasanna-ātmā govindaḥ
janamejaya varam vṛṇīṣva iti tadā tam uttaṅkaḥ abravīt idam
9. vaiśampāyanaḥ uvāca janamejaya,
tadā prasanna-ātmā govindaḥ tam uvāca,
"varam vṛṇīṣva!" iti uttaṅkaḥ tam idam abravīt
9. Vaiśampāyana said: Then Govinda, with a pleased mind (ātman), said to him, 'Choose a boon!' At that, Uttanka said this to him, O Janamejaya.
पर्याप्त एष एवाद्य वरस्त्वत्तो महाद्युते ।
यत्ते रूपमिदं कृष्ण पश्यामि प्रभवाप्ययम् ॥१०॥
10. paryāpta eṣa evādya varastvatto mahādyute ,
yatte rūpamidaṁ kṛṣṇa paśyāmi prabhavāpyayam.
10. paryāptaḥ eṣaḥ eva adya varaḥ tvattaḥ mahādyute
yat te rūpam idam kṛṣṇa paśyāmi prabhava-apyayam
10. mahādyute,
adya tvattaḥ eṣaḥ varaḥ eva paryāptaḥ yat kṛṣṇa te idam rūpam prabhava-apyayam paśyāmi
10. O greatly effulgent one, this boon from you is indeed sufficient today: that I behold this form of yours, O Krishna, which is the origin and dissolution (prabhavāpyayam) of all.
तमब्रवीत्पुनः कृष्णो मा त्वमत्र विचारय ।
अवश्यमेतत्कर्तव्यममोघं दर्शनं मम ॥११॥
11. tamabravītpunaḥ kṛṣṇo mā tvamatra vicāraya ,
avaśyametatkartavyamamoghaṁ darśanaṁ mama.
11. tam abravīt punaḥ kṛṣṇaḥ mā tvam atra vicāraya
avaśyam etat kartavyam amogham darśanam mama
11. kṛṣṇaḥ punaḥ tam abravīt,
"tvam atra mā vicāraya etat avaśyam kartavyam mama darśanam amogham"
11. Krishna again said to him, 'Do not deliberate on this matter. This must certainly be done, for my vision (darśana) is never in vain.'
उत्तङ्क उवाच ।
अवश्यकरणीयं वै यद्येतन्मन्यसे विभो ।
तोयमिच्छामि यत्रेष्टं मरुष्वेतद्धि दुर्लभम् ॥१२॥
12. uttaṅka uvāca ,
avaśyakaraṇīyaṁ vai yadyetanmanyase vibho ,
toyamicchāmi yatreṣṭaṁ maruṣvetaddhi durlabham.
12. uttaṅkaḥ uvāca avaśya-karaṇīyam vai yadi etat manyase
vibho toyam icchāmi yatra iṣṭam maruṣu etat hi durlabham
12. uttaṅkaḥ uvāca vibho,
yadi etat avaśya-karaṇīyam vai manyase,
toyam icchāmi yatra iṣṭam hi etat maruṣu durlabham
12. Uttanka said: 'If you consider this to be certainly accomplishable, O All-pervading Lord (vibho), then I desire water wherever it is wished, for this (water) is indeed difficult to obtain in deserts.'
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
ततः संहृत्य तत्तेजः प्रोवाचोत्तङ्कमीश्वरः ।
एष्टव्ये सति चिन्त्योऽहमित्युक्त्वा द्वारकां ययौ ॥१३॥
13. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
tataḥ saṁhṛtya tattejaḥ provācottaṅkamīśvaraḥ ,
eṣṭavye sati cintyo'hamityuktvā dvārakāṁ yayau.
13. Vaiśampāyana uvāca tataḥ saṃhṛtya tat tejaḥ provāca Uttankam
īśvaraḥ eṣṭavye sati cintyaḥ aham iti uktvā Dvārakām yayau
13. Vaiśampāyana uvāca tataḥ īśvaraḥ tat tejaḥ saṃhṛtya Uttankam
provāca eṣṭavye sati aham cintyaḥ iti uktvā Dvārakām yayau
13. Vaiśampāyana said: Then, having withdrawn that energy, the Lord spoke to Uttanka, "When something is to be desired or obtained, I should be remembered." Having said this, he went to Dvārakā.
ततः कदाचिद्भगवानुत्तङ्कस्तोयकाङ्क्षया ।
तृषितः परिचक्राम मरौ सस्मार चाच्युतम् ॥१४॥
14. tataḥ kadācidbhagavānuttaṅkastoyakāṅkṣayā ,
tṛṣitaḥ paricakrāma marau sasmāra cācyutam.
14. tataḥ kadācit bhagavān Uttarkaḥ toyakāṅkṣayā
tṛṣitaḥ paricakrāma marau sasmāra ca Acyutam
14. tataḥ kadācit bhagavān Uttarkaḥ toyakāṅkṣayā
tṛṣitaḥ marau paricakrāma ca Acyutam sasmāra
14. Then, one day, the revered Uttanka, thirsty and desiring water, wandered through the desert and remembered Acyuta.
ततो दिग्वाससं धीमान्मातङ्गं मलपङ्किनम् ।
अपश्यत मरौ तस्मिञ्श्वयूथपरिवारितम् ॥१५॥
15. tato digvāsasaṁ dhīmānmātaṅgaṁ malapaṅkinam ,
apaśyata marau tasmiñśvayūthaparivāritam.
15. tataḥ digvāsasam dhīmān mātaṅgam malapaṅkinam
apaśyata marau tasmin śvayūthaparivāritam
15. tataḥ dhīmān tasmin marau digvāsasam malapaṅkinam
śvayūthaparivāritam mātaṅgam apaśyata
15. Then, the intelligent one (Uttanka) saw in that desert a naked outcaste (mātaṅga) covered in dirt and mud, surrounded by a pack of dogs.
भीषणं बद्धनिस्त्रिंशं बाणकार्मुकधारिणम् ।
तस्याधः स्रोतसोऽपश्यद्वारि भूरि द्विजोत्तमः ॥१६॥
16. bhīṣaṇaṁ baddhanistriṁśaṁ bāṇakārmukadhāriṇam ,
tasyādhaḥ srotaso'paśyadvāri bhūri dvijottamaḥ.
16. bhīṣaṇam baddhanistriṃśam bāṇakārmukadhāriṇam
tasya adhaḥ srotasaḥ apaśyat vāri bhūri dvijottamaḥ
16. dvijottamaḥ bhīṣaṇam baddhanistriṃśam bāṇakārmukadhāriṇam
tasya adhaḥ srotasaḥ bhūri vāri apaśyat
16. The best of the twice-born (Uttanka) saw [him] terrifying, with a sword fastened, and holding a bow and arrow. Below him, he saw abundant water from a spring.
स्मरन्नेव च तं प्राह मातङ्गः प्रहसन्निव ।
एह्युत्तङ्क प्रतीच्छस्व मत्तो वारि भृगूद्वह ।
कृपा हि मे सुमहती त्वां दृष्ट्वा तृट्समाहतम् ॥१७॥
17. smaranneva ca taṁ prāha mātaṅgaḥ prahasanniva ,
ehyuttaṅka pratīcchasva matto vāri bhṛgūdvaha ,
kṛpā hi me sumahatī tvāṁ dṛṣṭvā tṛṭsamāhatam.
17. smaran eva ca tam prāha mātaṅgaḥ
prahasan iva ehi uttaṅka pratīcchasva
mattaḥ vāri bhṛgūdvaha kṛpā hi
me sumahatī tvām dṛṣṭvā tṛṭsamāhatam
17. mātaṅgaḥ tam smaran eva ca prahasan
iva prāha uttaṅka bhṛgūdvaha ehi
mattaḥ vāri pratīcchasva hi tvām
tṛṭsamāhatam dṛṣṭvā me sumahatī kṛpā
17. Remembering him, Matanga, the Caṇḍāla, then spoke to Uttanka as if laughing: 'Come, O descendant of Bhrigu, accept this water from me. Indeed, I feel great compassion for you, seeing you afflicted by thirst.'
इत्युक्तस्तेन स मुनिस्तत्तोयं नाभ्यनन्दत ।
चिक्षेप च स तं धीमान्वाग्भिरुग्राभिरच्युतम् ॥१८॥
18. ityuktastena sa munistattoyaṁ nābhyanandata ,
cikṣepa ca sa taṁ dhīmānvāgbhirugrābhiracyutam.
18. iti uktaḥ tena sa muniḥ tat toyam na abhyanandata
cikṣepa ca sa tam dhīmān vāgbhiḥ ugrābhiḥ acyutam
18. tena iti uktaḥ sa muniḥ tat toyam na abhyanandata
ca sa dhīmān tam acyutam ugrābhiḥ vāgbhiḥ cikṣepa
18. Addressed thus by him, that sage (Uttanka) did not approve of that water. And that intelligent one (Uttanka) cursed him (Matanga), who remained firm (acyuta), with fierce words.
पुनः पुनश्च मातङ्गः पिबस्वेति तमब्रवीत् ।
न चापिबत्स सक्रोधः क्षुभितेनान्तरात्मना ॥१९॥
19. punaḥ punaśca mātaṅgaḥ pibasveti tamabravīt ,
na cāpibatsa sakrodhaḥ kṣubhitenāntarātmanā.
19. punaḥ punaḥ ca mātaṅgaḥ pibasva iti tam abravīt
na ca apibat saḥ sakrodhaḥ kṣubhitena antarātmanā
19. ca punaḥ punaḥ mātaṅgaḥ tam pibasva iti abravīt
ca saḥ sakrodhaḥ kṣubhitena antarātmanā na apibat
19. And again and again, Matanga said to him, 'Drink!' But he, full of anger and with a disturbed inner self (ātman), did not drink.
स तथा निश्चयात्तेन प्रत्याख्यातो महात्मना ।
श्वभिः सह महाराज तत्रैवान्तरधीयत ॥२०॥
20. sa tathā niścayāttena pratyākhyāto mahātmanā ,
śvabhiḥ saha mahārāja tatraivāntaradhīyata.
20. sa tathā niścayāt tena pratyākhyātaḥ mahātmanā
śvabhiḥ saha mahārāja tatra eva antardhīyata
20. mahārāja saḥ tathā tena niścayāt mahātmanā
pratyākhyātaḥ śvabhiḥ saha tatra eva antardhīyata
20. O great king, thus resolutely rejected by that great-souled one (mahātman) (Uttanka), he (Matanga) then disappeared right there, along with his dogs.
उत्तङ्कस्तं तथा दृष्ट्वा ततो व्रीडितमानसः ।
मेने प्रलब्धमात्मानं कृष्णेनामित्रघातिना ॥२१॥
21. uttaṅkastaṁ tathā dṛṣṭvā tato vrīḍitamānasaḥ ,
mene pralabdhamātmānaṁ kṛṣṇenāmitraghātinā.
21. uttaṅkaḥ tam tathā dṛṣṭvā tataḥ vrīḍitamānasaḥ
mene pralabndham ātmānam kṛṣṇena amitraghātinā
21. uttaṅkaḥ tam tathā dṛṣṭvā tataḥ vrīḍitamānasaḥ
kṛṣṇena amitraghātinā pralabndham ātmānam mene
21. Seeing him in that state, Uttaṅka then became greatly embarrassed. He considered himself (ātman) deceived by Kṛṣṇa, the destroyer of enemies.
अथ तेनैव मार्गेण शङ्खचक्रगदाधरः ।
आजगाम महाबाहुरुत्तङ्कश्चैनमब्रवीत् ॥२२॥
22. atha tenaiva mārgeṇa śaṅkhacakragadādharaḥ ,
ājagāma mahābāhuruttaṅkaścainamabravīt.
22. atha tena eva mārgeṇa śaṅkhacakragadādharaḥ
ājagāma mahābāhuḥ uttaṅkaḥ ca enam abravīt
22. atha tena eva mārgeṇa śaṅkhacakragadādharaḥ
mahābāhuḥ ājagāma ca uttaṅkaḥ enam abravīt
22. Then, along that very path, the mighty-armed one, bearing the conch, discus, and mace, arrived. And Uttaṅka spoke to him.
न युक्तं तादृशं दातुं त्वया पुरुषसत्तम ।
सलिलं विप्रमुख्येभ्यो मातङ्गस्रोतसा विभो ॥२३॥
23. na yuktaṁ tādṛśaṁ dātuṁ tvayā puruṣasattama ,
salilaṁ vipramukhyebhyo mātaṅgasrotasā vibho.
23. na yuktam tādṛśam dātum tvayā puruṣasattama
salilam vipramukhyebhyaḥ mātaṅgasrotasā vibho
23. puruṣasattama vibho tvayā mātaṅgasrotasā
tādṛśam salilam vipramukhyebhyaḥ dātum na yuktam
23. O best among men, O Lord, it was not proper for you to offer such water - water from an outcaste's (mātaṅga) source - to the chief Brahmins.
इत्युक्तवचनं धीमान्महाबुद्धिर्जनार्दनः ।
उत्तङ्कं श्लक्ष्णया वाचा सान्त्वयन्निदमब्रवीत् ॥२४॥
24. ityuktavacanaṁ dhīmānmahābuddhirjanārdanaḥ ,
uttaṅkaṁ ślakṣṇayā vācā sāntvayannidamabravīt.
24. iti uktavacanam dhīmān mahābuddhiḥ janārdanaḥ
uttaṅkam ślakṣṇayā vācā sāntvayan idam abravīt
24. iti uktavacanam dhīmān mahābuddhiḥ janārdanaḥ
ślakṣṇayā vācā uttaṅkam sāntvayan idam abravīt
24. After Uttaṅka had spoken thus, the wise and greatly intelligent Janārdana (Kṛṣṇa), comforting Uttaṅka with a gentle voice, said this.
यादृशेनेह रूपेण योग्यं दातुं वृतेन वै ।
तादृशं खलु मे दत्तं त्वं तु तन्नावबुध्यसे ॥२५॥
25. yādṛśeneha rūpeṇa yogyaṁ dātuṁ vṛtena vai ,
tādṛśaṁ khalu me dattaṁ tvaṁ tu tannāvabudhyase.
25. yādṛśena iha rūpeṇa yogyaṃ dātuṃ vṛtena vai
tādṛśaṃ khalu me dattaṃ tvaṃ tu tat na avabudhyase
25. iha yādṛśena rūpeṇa vṛtena vai dātuṃ yogyaṃ
tādṛśaṃ khalu me dattaṃ tvaṃ tu tat na avabudhyase
25. Indeed, whatever form was suitable to be given, as requested, exactly that has been bestowed upon me. However, you do not comprehend this.
मया त्वदर्थमुक्तो हि वज्रपाणिः पुरंदरः ।
उत्तङ्कायामृतं देहि तोयरूपमिति प्रभुः ॥२६॥
26. mayā tvadarthamukto hi vajrapāṇiḥ puraṁdaraḥ ,
uttaṅkāyāmṛtaṁ dehi toyarūpamiti prabhuḥ.
26. mayā tvat arthaṃ uktaḥ hi vajrapāṇiḥ purandaraḥ
uttaṅkāya amṛtaṃ dehi toya rūpaṃ iti prabhuḥ
26. mayā tvat arthaṃ hi prabhuḥ vajrapāṇiḥ purandaraḥ
uktaḥ iti uttaṅkāya toya rūpaṃ amṛtaṃ dehi
26. Indeed, I addressed the lord Vajrapāṇi (Indra), Purandara, for your sake, saying: 'Give immortality (amṛta) to Uttaṅka in the form of water!'
स मामुवाच देवेन्द्रो न मर्त्योऽमर्त्यतां व्रजेत् ।
अन्यमस्मै वरं देहीत्यसकृद्भृगुनन्दन ॥२७॥
27. sa māmuvāca devendro na martyo'martyatāṁ vrajet ,
anyamasmai varaṁ dehītyasakṛdbhṛgunandana.
27. saḥ māṃ uvāca devendraḥ na martyaḥ amartyatāṃ vrajet
anyaṃ asmai varaṃ dehi iti asakṛt bhṛgunandana
27. devendraḥ saḥ asakṛt māṃ uvāca iti martyaḥ na
amartyatāṃ vrajet asmai anyaṃ varaṃ dehi bhṛgunandana
27. The lord of the gods (Indra) repeatedly said to me, 'A mortal being should not attain immortality (amṛtatā). Give him another boon, O son of Bhṛgu!'
अमृतं देयमित्येव मयोक्तः स शचीपतिः ।
स मां प्रसाद्य देवेन्द्रः पुनरेवेदमब्रवीत् ॥२८॥
28. amṛtaṁ deyamityeva mayoktaḥ sa śacīpatiḥ ,
sa māṁ prasādya devendraḥ punarevedamabravīt.
28. amṛtaṃ deyaṃ iti eva mayā uktaḥ saḥ śacīpatiḥ
saḥ māṃ prasādya devendraḥ punaḥ eva idaṃ abravīt
28. mayā iti eva amṛtaṃ deyaṃ uktaḥ saḥ śacīpatiḥ
devendraḥ saḥ māṃ prasādya punaḥ eva idaṃ abravīt
28. When I insisted, 'Immortality (amṛta) must be given,' that lord of the gods (Indra), husband of Śacī, then appeased me and spoke these words again.
यदि देयमवश्यं वै मातङ्गोऽहं महाद्युते ।
भूत्वामृतं प्रदास्यामि भार्गवाय महात्मने ॥२९॥
29. yadi deyamavaśyaṁ vai mātaṅgo'haṁ mahādyute ,
bhūtvāmṛtaṁ pradāsyāmi bhārgavāya mahātmane.
29. yadi deyam avaśyam vai mātangaḥ aham mahādyute
bhūtvā amṛtam pradāsyāmi bhārgavāya mahātmane
29. mahādyute yadi deyam avaśyam vai aham mātangaḥ
bhūtvā amṛtam bhārgavāya mahātmane pradāsyāmi
29. If it must certainly be given, O greatly resplendent one, then I shall become an outcaste (Mātanga) and give the nectar (amṛta) to the great-souled Bhārgava.
यद्येवं प्रतिगृह्णाति भार्गवोऽमृतमद्य वै ।
प्रदातुमेष गच्छामि भार्गवायामृतं प्रभो ।
प्रत्याख्यातस्त्वहं तेन न दद्यामिति भार्गव ॥३०॥
30. yadyevaṁ pratigṛhṇāti bhārgavo'mṛtamadya vai ,
pradātumeṣa gacchāmi bhārgavāyāmṛtaṁ prabho ,
pratyākhyātastvahaṁ tena na dadyāmiti bhārgava.
30. yadi evam pratigṛhṇāti bhārgavaḥ amṛtam
adya vai pradātum eṣaḥ gacchāmi
bhārgavāya amṛtam prabho pratyākhyātaḥ
tu aham tena na dadyām iti bhārgava
30. yadi bhārgavaḥ adya vai amṛtam evam
pratigṛhṇāti prabho eṣaḥ bhārgavāya
amṛtam pradātum gacchāmi tu aham tena
pratyākhyātaḥ bhārgava iti na dadyām
30. If Bhārgava indeed accepts the nectar (amṛta) today, then I shall go to give this nectar (amṛta) to Bhārgava, O lord. But I was rejected by him (Bhārgava), O Bhārgava, [who declared,] 'I should not give!'
स तथा समयं कृत्वा तेन रूपेण वासवः ।
उपस्थितस्त्वया चापि प्रत्याख्यातोऽमृतं ददत् ।
चण्डालरूपी भगवान्सुमहांस्ते व्यतिक्रमः ॥३१॥
31. sa tathā samayaṁ kṛtvā tena rūpeṇa vāsavaḥ ,
upasthitastvayā cāpi pratyākhyāto'mṛtaṁ dadat ,
caṇḍālarūpī bhagavānsumahāṁste vyatikramaḥ.
31. saḥ tathā samayam kṛtvā tena rūpeṇa
vāsavaḥ upasthitaḥ tvayā ca api
pratyākhyātaḥ amṛtam dadat caṇḍālarūpī
bhagavān sumahān te vyatikramaḥ
31. saḥ vāsavaḥ tathā samayam kṛtvā tena
rūpeṇa upasthitaḥ ca api tvayā
pratyākhyātaḥ bhagavān caṇḍālarūpī
amṛtam dadat te sumahān vyatikramaḥ
31. Having thus made a resolve, Vasava (Indra) was present in that form (of a Mātanga). He, the divine one, giving nectar (amṛta) in the form of an outcaste (caṇḍāla), was rejected even by you. Great indeed is your transgression.
यत्तु शक्यं मया कर्तुं भूय एव तवेप्सितम् ।
तोयेप्सां तव दुर्धर्ष करिष्ये सफलामहम् ॥३२॥
32. yattu śakyaṁ mayā kartuṁ bhūya eva tavepsitam ,
toyepsāṁ tava durdharṣa kariṣye saphalāmaham.
32. yat tu śakyam mayā kartum bhūyaḥ eva tava īpsitam
toyepsām tava durdharṣa kariṣye saphalām aham
32. durdharṣa tu yat bhūyaḥ eva tava īpsitam mayā
kartum śakyam aham tava toyepsām saphalām kariṣye
32. But whatever else you desire, which can be accomplished by me, O unconquerable one, I shall certainly make your longing for water fruitful.
येष्वहःसु तव ब्रह्मन्सलिलेच्छा भविष्यति ।
तदा मरौ भविष्यन्ति जलपूर्णाः पयोधराः ॥३३॥
33. yeṣvahaḥsu tava brahmansalilecchā bhaviṣyati ,
tadā marau bhaviṣyanti jalapūrṇāḥ payodharāḥ.
33. yeṣu ahaḥsu tava brahman salila-icchā bhaviṣyati
tadā marau bhaviṣyanti jala-pūrṇāḥ payodharāḥ
33. brahman tava yeṣu ahaḥsu salila-icchā bhaviṣyati
tadā marau jala-pūrṇāḥ payodharāḥ bhaviṣyanti
33. O brahmin, on whatever days you desire water, then in the desert, water-filled clouds will appear.
रसवच्च प्रदास्यन्ति ते तोयं भृगुनन्दन ।
उत्तङ्कमेघा इत्युक्ताः ख्यातिं यास्यन्ति चापि ते ॥३४॥
34. rasavacca pradāsyanti te toyaṁ bhṛgunandana ,
uttaṅkameghā ityuktāḥ khyātiṁ yāsyanti cāpi te.
34. rasavat ca pradāsyanti te toyam bhṛgu-nandana
uttaṅka-meghāḥ iti uktāḥ khyātim yāsyanti ca api te
34. bhṛgu-nandana te rasavat toyam ca pradāsyanti
uttaṅka-meghāḥ iti uktāḥ te ca api khyātim yāsyanti
34. And they will give sweet water, O descendant of Bhṛgu. They will also attain fame, being known as 'Utṭanka clouds'.
इत्युक्तः प्रीतिमान्विप्रः कृष्णेन स बभूव ह ।
अद्याप्युत्तङ्कमेघाश्च मरौ वर्षन्ति भारत ॥३५॥
35. ityuktaḥ prītimānvipraḥ kṛṣṇena sa babhūva ha ,
adyāpyuttaṅkameghāśca marau varṣanti bhārata.
35. iti uktaḥ prītimān vipraḥ kṛṣṇena sa babhūva ha
adya api uttaṅka-meghāḥ ca marau varṣanti bhārata
35. kṛṣṇena iti uktaḥ sa vipraḥ prītimān ha babhūva
bhārata adya api uttaṅka-meghāḥ ca marau varṣanti
35. Thus addressed by Kṛṣṇa, that brahmin indeed became pleased. And even today, O Bhārata, the Utṭanka clouds rain in the desert.
