आसीत्किल कुरुश्रेष्ठ महापद्मे पुरोत्तमे ।
गङ्गाया दक्षिणे तीरे कश्चिद्विप्रः समाहितः ॥१॥

1. Bhishma said: O best of the Kurus, on the southern bank of the Ganga, in the excellent city of Mahapadma, there was indeed a certain Brahmin who was deeply focused (samāhita).
सौम्यः सोमान्वये वेदे गताध्वा छिन्नसंशयः ।
धर्मनित्यो जितक्रोधो नित्यतृप्तो जितेन्द्रियः ॥२॥
2. saumyaḥ somānvaye vede gatādhvā chinnasaṁśayaḥ ,
dharmanityo jitakrodho nityatṛpto jitendriyaḥ.

2. He was gentle and belonged to the lineage of Soma. He was deeply learned in the Vedas, with all his doubts resolved. He was constantly devoted to his intrinsic nature (dharma), had conquered anger, was ever-content, and had mastered his senses.
अहिंसानिरतो नित्यं सत्यः सज्जनसंमतः ।
न्यायप्राप्तेन वित्तेन स्वेन शीलेन चान्वितः ॥३॥
3. ahiṁsānirato nityaṁ satyaḥ sajjanasaṁmataḥ ,
nyāyaprāptena vittena svena śīlena cānvitaḥ.
3. ahiṃsānirataḥ nityaṃ satyaḥ sajjanasaṃmataḥ |
nyāyaprāptena vittena svena śīlena ca anvitaḥ

3. He was always dedicated to non-harm (ahiṃsā), truthful, and highly regarded by virtuous individuals. He possessed wealth acquired through just means and was endowed with excellent personal conduct.
ज्ञातिसंबन्धिविपुले मित्रापाश्रयसंमते ।
कुले महति विख्याते विशिष्टां वृत्तिमास्थितः ॥४॥
4. jñātisaṁbandhivipule mitrāpāśrayasaṁmate ,
kule mahati vikhyāte viśiṣṭāṁ vṛttimāsthitaḥ.

kule mahati vikhyāte viśiṣṭāṃ vṛttiṃ āsthitaḥ
4. saḥ jñātisaṃbandhivipule mitrāpāśrayasaṃmate mahati

4. He lived a distinguished life, maintaining a respected livelihood within a great and renowned family that included a vast network of relatives and kinsmen, and was held in high regard by friends and dependents alike.
स पुत्रान्बहुलान्दृष्ट्वा विपुले कर्मणि स्थितः ।
कुलधर्माश्रितो राजन्धर्मचर्यापरोऽभवत् ॥५॥
5. sa putrānbahulāndṛṣṭvā vipule karmaṇi sthitaḥ ,
kuladharmāśrito rājandharmacaryāparo'bhavat.
5. sa putrān bahulān dṛṣṭvā vipule karmaṇi sthitaḥ
kula-dharma-āśritaḥ rājan dharma-caryā-paraḥ abhavat
5. O King, having seen his many sons, he became engaged in extensive undertakings, adhering to his family's constitution (dharma), and dedicated to the practice of righteous conduct (dharma).
ततः स धर्मं वेदोक्तं यथाशास्त्रोक्तमेव च ।
शिष्टाचीर्णं च धर्मं च त्रिविधं चिन्त्य चेतसा ॥६॥
6. tataḥ sa dharmaṁ vedoktaṁ yathāśāstroktameva ca ,
śiṣṭācīrṇaṁ ca dharmaṁ ca trividhaṁ cintya cetasā.
6. tataḥ sa dharmam veda-uktam yathā-śāstra-uktam eva ca
śiṣṭa-ācīrṇam ca dharmam ca tri-vidham cintya cetasā
6. Then, having pondered with his mind upon the threefold natural law (dharma) - that which is declared in the Vedas, that which is stated in the scriptures, and that which is practiced by the virtuous -
किं नु मे स्याच्छुभं कृत्वा किं क्षमं किं परायणम् ।
इत्येवं खिद्यते नित्यं न च याति विनिश्चयम् ॥७॥
7. kiṁ nu me syācchubhaṁ kṛtvā kiṁ kṣamaṁ kiṁ parāyaṇam ,
ityevaṁ khidyate nityaṁ na ca yāti viniścayam.
7. kim nu me syāt śubham kṛtvā kim kṣamam kim parāyaṇam
iti evam khidyate nityam na ca yāti viniścayam
7. What good would come to me by doing what? What is appropriate? What is the ultimate course of action? Thus, he was constantly distressed and could not reach a firm decision.
तस्यैवं खिद्यमानस्य धर्मं परममास्थितः ।
कदाचिदतिथिः प्राप्तो ब्राह्मणः सुसमाहितः ॥८॥
8. tasyaivaṁ khidyamānasya dharmaṁ paramamāsthitaḥ ,
kadācidatithiḥ prāpto brāhmaṇaḥ susamāhitaḥ.
8. tasya evam khidyamānasya dharmam paramam āsthitaḥ
kadācit atithiḥ prāptaḥ brāhmaṇaḥ su-samāhitaḥ
8. As he was thus distressed, a Brahmin guest, devoted to the supreme natural law (dharma) and well-composed, arrived one day.
स तस्मै सत्क्रियां चक्रे क्रियायुक्तेन हेतुना ।
विश्रान्तं चैनमासीनमिदं वचनमब्रवीत् ॥९॥
9. sa tasmai satkriyāṁ cakre kriyāyuktena hetunā ,
viśrāntaṁ cainamāsīnamidaṁ vacanamabravīt.
9. saḥ tasmai satkriyām cakre kriyāyuktena hetunā
viśrāntam ca enam āsīnam idam vacanam abravīt
9. saḥ kriyāyuktena hetunā tasmai satkriyām cakre
ca viśrāntam āsīnam enam idam vacanam abravīt
9. He offered him proper hospitality for a suitable reason. And to him, who was now rested and seated, he spoke these words.
