कां तु ब्राह्मणपूजायां व्युष्टिं दृष्ट्वा जनाधिप ।
कं वा कर्मोदयं मत्वा तानर्चसि महामते ॥१॥
1. yudhiṣṭhira uvāca ,
kāṁ tu brāhmaṇapūjāyāṁ vyuṣṭiṁ dṛṣṭvā janādhipa ,
kaṁ vā karmodayaṁ matvā tānarcasi mahāmate.

1. Yudhiṣṭhira uvāca.
janādhipa mahāmate,
brāhmaṇapūjāyām kām tu vyuṣṭim dṛṣṭvā,
vā kam karmodayam matvā,
tān arcasi?
1. Yudhiṣṭhira said: O ruler of people (janādhipa), O great-minded one (mahāmate), what benefit do you perceive in the reverence of brahmins, or what rise of (karma) do you consider, that you honor them?
भीष्म उवाच ।
अत्राप्युदाहरन्तीममितिहासं पुरातनम् ।
पवनस्य च संवादमर्जुनस्य च भारत ॥२॥
2. bhīṣma uvāca ,
atrāpyudāharantīmamitihāsaṁ purātanam ,
pavanasya ca saṁvādamarjunasya ca bhārata.
2. bhīṣmaḥ uvāca atra api udāharanti imam itihāsam
purātanam pavanasyaca saṃvādam arjunasya ca bhārata

bhārata,
atra api (janāḥ) imam purātanam pavanasyaca arjunasya ca saṃvādam itihāsam udāharanti.
2. Bhishma said: "O Bhārata, here they also recount this ancient narrative, a conversation between Pavana and Arjuna."
सहस्रभुजभृच्छ्रीमान्कार्तवीर्योऽभवत्प्रभुः ।
अस्य लोकस्य सर्वस्य माहिष्मत्यां महाबलः ॥३॥
3. sahasrabhujabhṛcchrīmānkārtavīryo'bhavatprabhuḥ ,
asya lokasya sarvasya māhiṣmatyāṁ mahābalaḥ.
3. sahasrabhuja bhṛt śrīmān kārtavīryaḥ abhavat
prabhuḥ asya lokasya sarvasya māhiṣmatyām mahābalaḥ
3. sahasrabhuja bhṛt,
śrīmān,
mahābalaḥ kārtavīryaḥ māhiṣmatyām asya sarvasya lokasya prabhuḥ abhavat.
3. The glorious and mighty Kārtavīrya, who possessed a thousand arms, became the ruler of this entire world from Māhiṣmatī.
स तु रत्नाकरवतीं सद्वीपां सागराम्बराम् ।
शशास सर्वां पृथिवीं हैहयः सत्यविक्रमः ॥४॥
4. sa tu ratnākaravatīṁ sadvīpāṁ sāgarāmbarām ,
śaśāsa sarvāṁ pṛthivīṁ haihayaḥ satyavikramaḥ.
4. saḥ tu ratnākaravatīm sadvīpām sāgarāmbarām
śaśāsa sarvām pṛthivīm haihayaḥ satyavikramaḥ
4. tu,
saḥ satyavikramaḥ haihayaḥ ratnākaravatīm sadvīpām sāgarāmbarām sarvām pṛthivīm śaśāsa.
4. But that Haihaya king, of true valor, ruled the entire earth, which possessed oceans and islands, and was clothed by the oceans.
स्ववित्तं तेन दत्तं तु दत्तात्रेयाय कारणे ।
क्षत्रधर्मं पुरस्कृत्य विनयं श्रुतमेव च ॥५॥
5. svavittaṁ tena dattaṁ tu dattātreyāya kāraṇe ,
kṣatradharmaṁ puraskṛtya vinayaṁ śrutameva ca.
5. svavittam tena dattam tu dattātreyāya kāraṇe
kṣatradharmam puraskṛtya vinayam śrutam eva ca
5. tu,
tena svavittam kṣatradharmam vinayam ca śrutam eva puraskṛtya kāraṇe dattātreyāya dattam.
5. Indeed, his own wealth was given by him to Dattatreya for a specific reason, honoring the warrior's natural law (kṣatradharma), humility, and also sacred knowledge.
आराधयामास च तं कृतवीर्यात्मजो मुनिम् ।
न्यमन्त्रयत संहृष्टः स द्विजश्च वरैस्त्रिभिः ॥६॥
6. ārādhayāmāsa ca taṁ kṛtavīryātmajo munim ,
nyamantrayata saṁhṛṣṭaḥ sa dvijaśca varaistribhiḥ.
6. ārādhayāmāsa ca tam kṛtavīryātmajaḥ munim
nyamantrayata saṃhṛṣṭaḥ sa dvijaḥ ca varaiḥ tribhiḥ
6. kṛtavīryātmajaḥ tam munim ārādhayāmāsa.
ca saḥ saṃhṛṣṭaḥ dvijaḥ tribhiḥ varaiḥ nyamantrayata.
6. Kritavirya's son worshipped that sage. And that sage, being greatly pleased, invited him with three boons.
स वरैश्छन्दितस्तेन नृपो वचनमब्रवीत् ।
सहस्रबाहुर्भूयां वै चमूमध्ये गृहेऽन्यथा ॥७॥
7. sa varaiśchanditastena nṛpo vacanamabravīt ,
sahasrabāhurbhūyāṁ vai camūmadhye gṛhe'nyathā.
7. saḥ varaiḥ chanditaḥ tena nṛpaḥ vacanam abravīt
sahasrabāhuḥ bhūyām vai camūmadhye gṛhe anyathā
7. saḥ nṛpaḥ tena varaiḥ chanditaḥ vacanam abravīt.
vai sahasrabāhuḥ camūmadhye bhūyām,
gṛhe anyathā.
7. That king, having been granted boons by him, spoke these words: "May I indeed possess a thousand arms when amidst the army, but otherwise (only two) when at home."
मम बाहुसहस्रं तु पश्यन्तां सैनिका रणे ।
विक्रमेण महीं कृत्स्नां जयेयं विपुलव्रत ।
तां च धर्मेण संप्राप्य पालयेयमतन्द्रितः ॥८॥
8. mama bāhusahasraṁ tu paśyantāṁ sainikā raṇe ,
vikrameṇa mahīṁ kṛtsnāṁ jayeyaṁ vipulavrata ,
tāṁ ca dharmeṇa saṁprāpya pālayeyamatandritaḥ.
8. mama bāhusahasram tu paśyantām
sainikāḥ raṇe vikrameṇa mahīm kṛtsnām
jayeyam vipulavrata tām ca
dharmeṇa saṃprāpya pālayeyam atandritaḥ
8. vipulavrata,
tu sainikāḥ raṇe mama bāhusahasram paśyantām.
vikrameṇa kṛtsnām mahīm jayeyam.
ca atandritaḥ dharmeṇa tām saṃprāpya pālayeyam.
8. "Let my thousand arms indeed be seen by the soldiers in battle. By valor, O sage of great vows, may I conquer the entire earth. And having obtained that earth, may I rule it vigilantly, in accordance with (dharma)."
चतुर्थं तु वरं याचे त्वामहं द्विजसत्तम ।
तं ममानुग्रहकृते दातुमर्हस्यनिन्दित ।
अनुशासन्तु मां सन्तो मिथ्यावृत्तं तदाश्रयम् ॥९॥
9. caturthaṁ tu varaṁ yāce tvāmahaṁ dvijasattama ,
taṁ mamānugrahakṛte dātumarhasyanindita ,
anuśāsantu māṁ santo mithyāvṛttaṁ tadāśrayam.
9. caturtham tu varam yāce tvām aham
dvijasattama tam mama anugrahakṛte
dātum arhasi anindita anuśāsantu
mām santaḥ mithyāvṛttam tadāśrayam
9. dvijasattama,
aham tu tvām caturtham varam yāce.
anindita,
mama anugrahakṛte tam dātum arhasi.
santaḥ mithyāvṛttam tadāśrayam mām anuśāsantu.
9. "O best among (dvijas), I indeed request a fourth boon from you. O blameless one, you should grant that for my benefit. Let good and virtuous people (santaḥ) instruct me, who may be ill-behaved and dependent on them."
इत्युक्तः स द्विजः प्राह तथास्त्विति नराधिपम् ।
एवं समभवंस्तस्य वरास्ते दीप्ततेजसः ॥१०॥
10. ityuktaḥ sa dvijaḥ prāha tathāstviti narādhipam ,
evaṁ samabhavaṁstasya varāste dīptatejasaḥ.
10. iti uktaḥ saḥ dvijaḥ prāha tathā astu iti narādhipam
evam samabhavan tasya varāḥ te dīptatejasaḥ
10. saḥ dvijaḥ iti uktaḥ tathā astu iti narādhipam
prāha evam tasya dīptatejasaḥ te varāḥ samabhavan
10. Having been addressed thus, that brahmin said to the king, 'So be it.' In this way, those boons, endowed with blazing splendor, manifested for him.
ततः स रथमास्थाय ज्वलनार्कसमद्युतिः ।
अब्रवीद्वीर्यसंमोहात्को न्वस्ति सदृशो मया ।
वीर्यधैर्ययशःशौचैर्विक्रमेणौजसापि वा ॥११॥
11. tataḥ sa rathamāsthāya jvalanārkasamadyutiḥ ,
abravīdvīryasaṁmohātko nvasti sadṛśo mayā ,
vīryadhairyayaśaḥśaucairvikrameṇaujasāpi vā.
11. tataḥ saḥ ratham āsthāya jvalanārkasamadyutiḥ
abravīt vīryasaṃmohāt kaḥ
nu asti sadṛśaḥ mayā vīryadhairyayaśaḥśaucaiḥ
vikrameṇa ojasā api vā
11. tataḥ saḥ jvalanārkasamadyutiḥ ratham
āsthāya vīryasaṃmohāt abravīt mayā
sadṛśaḥ kaḥ nu asti vīryadhairyayaśaḥśaucaiḥ
vikrameṇa ojasā api vā
11. Then he, having mounted a chariot and possessing a splendor like fire and the sun, said, from infatuation with his prowess (vīrya), 'Who indeed is similar to me, in valor, fortitude, fame, purity, courage, or even strength?'
तद्वाक्यान्ते चान्तरिक्षे वागुवाचाशरीरिणी ।
न त्वं मूढ विजानीषे ब्राह्मणं क्षत्रियाद्वरम् ।
सहितो ब्राह्मणेनेह क्षत्रियो रक्षति प्रजाः ॥१२॥
12. tadvākyānte cāntarikṣe vāguvācāśarīriṇī ,
na tvaṁ mūḍha vijānīṣe brāhmaṇaṁ kṣatriyādvaram ,
sahito brāhmaṇeneha kṣatriyo rakṣati prajāḥ.
12. tat vākya ante ca antarikṣe vāk uvāca
aśarīriṇī na tvam mūḍha vijānīṣe
brāhmaṇam kṣatriyāt varam sahitaḥ
brāhmaṇena iha kṣatriyaḥ rakṣati prajāḥ
12. ca tat vākya ante aśarīriṇī vāk
antarikṣe uvāca mūḍha tvam brāhmaṇam
kṣatriyāt varam na vijānīṣe iha brāhmaṇena
sahitaḥ kṣatriyaḥ prajāḥ rakṣati
12. And at the end of his speech, a bodiless voice spoke from the sky, 'You, foolish one, do not understand that a brahmin is superior to a kṣatriya. Here, a kṣatriya, accompanied by a brahmin, protects the subjects.'
अर्जुन उवाच ।
कुर्यां भूतानि तुष्टोऽहं क्रुद्धो नाशं तथा नये ।
कर्मणा मनसा वाचा न मत्तोऽस्ति वरो द्विजः ॥१३॥
13. arjuna uvāca ,
kuryāṁ bhūtāni tuṣṭo'haṁ kruddho nāśaṁ tathā naye ,
karmaṇā manasā vācā na matto'sti varo dvijaḥ.
13. arjunaḥ uvāca kuryām bhūtāni tuṣṭaḥ aham kruddhaḥ nāśam
tathā naye karmaṇā manasā vācā na mattaḥ asti varaḥ dvijaḥ
13. arjunaḥ uvāca aham tuṣṭaḥ bhūtāni kuryām tathā kruddhaḥ
nāśam naye dvija karmaṇā manasā vācā mattaḥ varaḥ na asti
13. Arjuna said, 'When I am pleased, I can create beings; similarly, when enraged, I can lead them to destruction. By action, mind, or speech, there is no one superior to me, O brahmin!'
पूर्वो ब्रह्मोत्तरो वादो द्वितीयः क्षत्रियोत्तरः ।
त्वयोक्तौ यौ तु तौ हेतू विशेषस्त्वत्र दृश्यते ॥१४॥
14. pūrvo brahmottaro vādo dvitīyaḥ kṣatriyottaraḥ ,
tvayoktau yau tu tau hetū viśeṣastvatra dṛśyate.
14. pūrvaḥ brahma-uttaraḥ vādaḥ dvitīyaḥ kṣatriya-uttaraḥ
tvayā uktau yau tu tau hetū viśeṣaḥ tu atra dṛśyate
14. The first discourse declared Brahmins superior, and the second declared Kṣatriyas superior. These two reasons were stated by you, but a distinct difference is observed here.
ब्राह्मणाः संश्रिताः क्षत्रं न क्षत्रं ब्राह्मणाश्रितम् ।
श्रितान्ब्रह्मोपधा विप्राः खादन्ति क्षत्रियान्भुवि ॥१५॥
15. brāhmaṇāḥ saṁśritāḥ kṣatraṁ na kṣatraṁ brāhmaṇāśritam ,
śritānbrahmopadhā viprāḥ khādanti kṣatriyānbhuvi.
15. brāhmaṇāḥ saṃśritāḥ kṣatram na kṣatram brāhmaṇa-āśritam
śritān brahma-upadhāḥ viprāḥ khādanti kṣatriyān bhuvi
15. Brahmins are dependent on the Kṣatriya power; the Kṣatriya power is not dependent on Brahmins. On earth, Brahmins (viprāḥ) who have sought refuge and employ deceit under the guise of sacred knowledge (brahman), exploit those dependent Kṣatriyas.
क्षत्रियेष्वाश्रितो धर्मः प्रजानां परिपालनम् ।
क्षत्राद्वृत्तिर्ब्राह्मणानां तैः कथं ब्राह्मणो वरः ॥१६॥
16. kṣatriyeṣvāśrito dharmaḥ prajānāṁ paripālanam ,
kṣatrādvṛttirbrāhmaṇānāṁ taiḥ kathaṁ brāhmaṇo varaḥ.
16. kṣatriyeṣu āśritaḥ dharmaḥ prajānām paripālanam
kṣatrāt vṛttiḥ brāhmaṇānām taiḥ katham brāhmaṇaḥ varaḥ
16. The natural law (dharma) for Kṣatriyas is the protection of subjects. The livelihood of Brahmins depends on the Kṣatriya power. How then can a Brahmin be superior to them (Kṣatriyas)?
सर्वभूतप्रधानांस्तान्भैक्षवृत्तीनहं सदा ।
आत्मसंभावितान्विप्रान्स्थापयाम्यात्मनो वशे ॥१७॥
17. sarvabhūtapradhānāṁstānbhaikṣavṛttīnahaṁ sadā ,
ātmasaṁbhāvitānviprānsthāpayāmyātmano vaśe.
17. sarva-bhūta-pradhānān tān bhaikṣa-vṛttīn aham sadā
ātman-saṃbhāvitān viprān sthāpayāmi ātmanaḥ vaśe
17. I always place those Brahmins who deem themselves supreme among all creatures, subsist on alms, and are full of self-importance, under the control of my own self (ātman).
कथितं ह्यनया सत्यं गायत्र्या कन्यया दिवि ।
विजेष्याम्यवशान्सर्वान्ब्राह्मणांश्चर्मवाससः ॥१८॥
18. kathitaṁ hyanayā satyaṁ gāyatryā kanyayā divi ,
vijeṣyāmyavaśānsarvānbrāhmaṇāṁścarmavāsasaḥ.
18. kathitam hi anayā satyam gāyatryā kanyayā divi
vijesyāmi avaśān sarvān brāhmaṇān carmavāsasaḥ
18. Indeed, this truth has been declared by this maiden Gāyatrī in heaven: 'I will conquer all the powerless Brahmins who wear deerskins.'
न च मां च्यावयेद्राष्ट्रात्त्रिषु लोकेषु कश्चन ।
देवो वा मानुषो वापि तस्माज्ज्येष्ठो द्विजादहम् ॥१९॥
19. na ca māṁ cyāvayedrāṣṭrāttriṣu lokeṣu kaścana ,
devo vā mānuṣo vāpi tasmājjyeṣṭho dvijādaham.
19. na ca mām cyāvayet rāṣṭrāt triṣu lokeṣu kaścana
devaḥ vā mānuṣaḥ vā api tasmāt jyeṣṭhaḥ dvijāt aham
19. And no one in the three worlds, neither a god nor a human, can remove me from my kingdom. Therefore, I am superior to any twice-born.
अद्य ब्रह्मोत्तरं लोकं करिष्ये क्षत्रियोत्तरम् ।
न हि मे संयुगे कश्चित्सोढुमुत्सहते बलम् ॥२०॥
20. adya brahmottaraṁ lokaṁ kariṣye kṣatriyottaram ,
na hi me saṁyuge kaścitsoḍhumutsahate balam.
20. adya brahmottaram lokam kariṣye kṣatriyottaram
na hi me saṃyuge kaścit soḍhum utsahate balam
20. Today I will make the world one where Kṣatriyas are superior and Brahmins are subordinate. Indeed, no one in battle can withstand my power.
अर्जुनस्य वचः श्रुत्वा वित्रस्ताभून्निशाचरी ।
अथैनमन्तरिक्षस्थस्ततो वायुरभाषत ॥२१॥
21. arjunasya vacaḥ śrutvā vitrastābhūnniśācarī ,
athainamantarikṣasthastato vāyurabhāṣata.
21. arjunasya vacaḥ śrutvā vitrastā abhūt niśācarī
atha enam antarikṣasthaḥ tataḥ vāyuḥ abhāṣata
21. Having heard Arjuna's words, the night-demoness became greatly frightened. Then, Vāyu, from his position in the sky, spoke to him.
त्यजैनं कलुषं भावं ब्राह्मणेभ्यो नमस्कुरु ।
एतेषां कुर्वतः पापं राष्ट्रक्षोभो हि ते भवेत् ॥२२॥
22. tyajainaṁ kaluṣaṁ bhāvaṁ brāhmaṇebhyo namaskuru ,
eteṣāṁ kurvataḥ pāpaṁ rāṣṭrakṣobho hi te bhavet.
22. tyaja enam kaluṣam bhāvam brāhmaṇebhyaḥ namaskuru
eteṣām kurvataḥ pāpam rāṣṭrakṣobhaḥ hi te bhavet
22. enam kaluṣam bhāvam tyaja.
brāhmaṇebhyaḥ namaskuru.
eteṣām pāpam kurvataḥ hi te rāṣṭrakṣobhaḥ bhavet.
22. Abandon this wicked disposition and offer obeisance to the Brahmins. Indeed, by committing an offense against them, a disturbance (rāṣṭrakṣobha) will surely arise in your kingdom for you.
अथ वा त्वां महीपाल शमयिष्यन्ति वै द्विजाः ।
निरसिष्यन्ति वा राष्ट्राद्धतोत्साहं महाबलाः ॥२३॥
23. atha vā tvāṁ mahīpāla śamayiṣyanti vai dvijāḥ ,
nirasiṣyanti vā rāṣṭrāddhatotsāhaṁ mahābalāḥ.
23. atha vā tvām mahīpāla śamayiṣyanti vai dvijāḥ
nirasiṣyanti vā rāṣṭrāt hata-utsāham mahābalāḥ
23. mahīpāla,
atha vā dvijāḥ mahābalāḥ vai tvām śamayiṣyanti,
vā hata-utsāham tvām rāṣṭrāt nirasiṣyanti.
23. Or else, O king, the greatly powerful Brahmins will indeed subdue you, or they will expel you from the kingdom, your enthusiasm (utsāha) utterly destroyed.
तं राजा कस्त्वमित्याह ततस्तं प्राह मारुतः ।
वायुर्वै देवदूतोऽस्मि हितं त्वां प्रब्रवीम्यहम् ॥२४॥
24. taṁ rājā kastvamityāha tatastaṁ prāha mārutaḥ ,
vāyurvai devadūto'smi hitaṁ tvāṁ prabravīmyaham.
24. tam rājā kaḥ tvam iti āha tataḥ tam prāha mārutaḥ
vāyuḥ vai devadūtaḥ asmi hitam tvām prabravīmi aham
24. rājā tam (puruṣam) "kaḥ tvam (asi)?" iti āha.
tataḥ mārutaḥ tam prāha: "aham vāyuḥ vai devadūtaḥ asmi.
aham tvām hitam prabravīmi.
"
24. The king asked him, 'Who are you?' Then Maruta said to him, 'I am Vayu, indeed a messenger of the gods. I am telling you what is beneficial.'
अर्जुन उवाच ।
अहो त्वयाद्य विप्रेषु भक्तिरागः प्रदर्शितः ।
यादृशं पृथिवी भूतं तादृशं ब्रूहि वै द्विजम् ॥२५॥
25. arjuna uvāca ,
aho tvayādya vipreṣu bhaktirāgaḥ pradarśitaḥ ,
yādṛśaṁ pṛthivī bhūtaṁ tādṛśaṁ brūhi vai dvijam.
25. arjuna uvāca aho tvayā adya vipreṣu bhakti-rāgaḥ
pradarśitaḥ yādṛśam pṛthivībhūtam tādṛśam brūhi vai dvijam
25. arjuna uvāca: "aho! adya tvayā vipreṣu bhakti-rāgaḥ pradarśitaḥ.
vai,
yādṛśam pṛthivībhūtam (saḥ asti),
tādṛśam dvijam brūhi.
"
25. Arjuna said: 'Oh! Today, you have displayed such great devotion (bhakti) and affection towards Brahmins. Tell me, indeed, what kind of earthly being is that Brahmin?'
वायोर्वा सदृशं किंचिद्ब्रूहि त्वं ब्राह्मणोत्तमम् ।
अपां वै सदृशं ब्रूहि सूर्यस्य नभसोऽपि वा ॥२६॥
26. vāyorvā sadṛśaṁ kiṁcidbrūhi tvaṁ brāhmaṇottamam ,
apāṁ vai sadṛśaṁ brūhi sūryasya nabhaso'pi vā.
26. vāyoḥ vā sadṛśam kiñcit brūhi tvam brāhmaṇottamam
apām vai sadṛśam brūhi sūryasya nabhasaḥ api vā
26. brāhmaṇottamam tvam brūhi kiñcit vāyoḥ vā sadṛśam
apām vai sadṛśam sūryasya nabhasaḥ api vā brūhi
26. O best among brahmin (brāhmaṇa)s, tell me, what is comparable to wind? Indeed, tell me what is similar to water, or to the sun, or even to the sky.
