वैशंपायन उवाच ।

1. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,

Vaiśampāyana said: Then, the black-eyed one (asitalocanā), having gathered up her soft, faultless hair with curled ends, hid it on her right side.
वासश्च परिधायैकं कृष्णं सुमलिनं महत् ।
कृत्वा वेषं च सैरन्ध्र्याः कृष्णा व्यचरदार्तवत् ॥२॥

2. vāsaśca paridhāyaikaṁ kṛṣṇaṁ sumalinaṁ mahat ,

And having put on a single large, black, very dirty garment, Kṛṣṇā (Draupadi), having assumed the disguise of a hair-dresser (sairandhrī), wandered about like one distressed.
तां नराः परिधावन्तीं स्त्रियश्च समुपाद्रवन् ।
अपृच्छंश्चैव तां दृष्ट्वा का त्वं किं च चिकीर्षसि ॥३॥

3. tāṁ narāḥ paridhāvantīṁ striyaśca samupādravan ,

Men running about and women rushed up to her. Having seen her, they asked her, "Who are you, and what do you wish to do?"
सा तानुवाच राजेन्द्र सैरन्ध्र्यहमुपागता ।
कर्म चेच्छामि वै कर्तुं तस्य यो मां पुपुक्षति ॥४॥
कर्म चेच्छामि वै कर्तुं तस्य यो मां पुपुक्षति ॥४॥
4. sā tānuvāca rājendra sairandhryahamupāgatā ,
karma cecchāmi vai kartuṁ tasya yo māṁ pupukṣati.

"O King," she said to them, "I have come as a hair-dresser (sairandhrī). Indeed, I wish to do work for him who desires to support me."
तस्या रूपेण वेषेण श्लक्ष्णया च तथा गिरा ।
नाश्रद्दधत तां दासीमन्नहेतोरुपस्थिताम् ॥५॥

5. tasyā rūpeṇa veṣeṇa ślakṣṇayā ca tathā girā ,

Because of her appearance, her attire, and her soft speech, they did not doubt that maidservant who had arrived seeking food.
विराटस्य तु कैकेयी भार्या परमसंमता ।
अवलोकयन्ती ददृशे प्रासादाद्द्रुपदात्मजाम् ॥६॥

Indeed, King Virata's highly esteemed wife, the Kaikeyī (Queen Sudeṣṇā), observing from the palace, saw Drupada's daughter (Draupadi).
सा समीक्ष्य तथारूपामनाथामेकवाससम् ।
समाहूयाब्रवीद्भद्रे का त्वं किं च चिकीर्षसि ॥७॥

7. sā samīkṣya tathārūpāmanāthāmekavāsasam ,
samāhūyābravīdbhadre kā tvaṁ kiṁ ca cikīrṣasi.

Having observed her, who was of such an appearance, helpless, and wearing a single garment, she (the queen) called out and said, 'O gentle lady, who are you and what do you intend to do?'
सा तामुवाच राजेन्द्र सैरन्ध्र्यहमुपागता ।
कर्म चेच्छाम्यहं कर्तुं तस्य यो मां पुपुक्षति ॥८॥

She (Draupadi) said to her (the queen), 'O royal lady, I am a sairandhrī, and I have arrived. I wish to perform service (karma) for whoever wishes to nourish me.'
सुदेष्णोवाच ।
नैवंरूपा भवन्त्येवं यथा वदसि भामिनि ।
प्रेषयन्ति च वै दासीर्दासांश्चैवंविधान्बहून् ॥९॥
नैवंरूपा भवन्त्येवं यथा वदसि भामिनि ।
प्रेषयन्ति च वै दासीर्दासांश्चैवंविधान्बहून् ॥९॥
9. sudeṣṇovāca ,
naivaṁrūpā bhavantyevaṁ yathā vadasi bhāmini ,
preṣayanti ca vai dāsīrdāsāṁścaivaṁvidhānbahūn.
naivaṁrūpā bhavantyevaṁ yathā vadasi bhāmini ,
preṣayanti ca vai dāsīrdāsāṁścaivaṁvidhānbahūn.

sudeṣṇā uvāca na evam rūpāḥ bhavanti evam yathā vadasi
bhāmini preṣayanti ca vai dāsīḥ dāsān ca evam vidhān bahūn
bhāmini preṣayanti ca vai dāsīḥ dāsān ca evam vidhān bahūn

Sudeshna said: "Beautiful lady, those of such noble birth are not like you say they are. Indeed, they send many such maids and servants."
गूढगुल्फा संहतोरुस्त्रिगम्भीरा षडुन्नता ।
रक्ता पञ्चसु रक्तेषु हंसगद्गदभाषिणी ॥१०॥

10. gūḍhagulphā saṁhatorustrigambhīrā ṣaḍunnatā ,
raktā pañcasu rakteṣu haṁsagadgadabhāṣiṇī.

She has concealed ankles, compact thighs, three deep features (such as navel, voice, and intellect), six prominent features (such as breasts, shoulders, and nails). Her five extremities (palms, soles, corners of eyes, tongue, and nails) are reddish, and she speaks with a warbling voice like a swan's.
सुकेशी सुस्तनी श्यामा पीनश्रोणिपयोधरा ।
तेन तेनैव संपन्ना काश्मीरीव तुरंगमा ॥११॥

11. sukeśī sustanī śyāmā pīnaśroṇipayodharā ,
tena tenaiva saṁpannā kāśmīrīva turaṁgamā.

She has beautiful hair, lovely breasts, a dark complexion, and full hips and breasts. She is endowed with all these qualities, just like a Kashmiri mare.
स्वरालपक्ष्मनयना बिम्बोष्ठी तनुमध्यमा ।
कम्बुग्रीवा गूढसिरा पूर्णचन्द्रनिभानना ॥१२॥

12. svarālapakṣmanayanā bimboṣṭhī tanumadhyamā ,

She has beautiful eyes with fine, dense eyelashes, lips red like the bimba fruit, a slender waist, a neck like a conch, hidden veins, and a face resembling the full moon.
का त्वं ब्रूहि यथा भद्रे नासि दासी कथंचन ।
यक्षी वा यदि वा देवी गन्धर्वी यदि वाप्सराः ॥१३॥
यक्षी वा यदि वा देवी गन्धर्वी यदि वाप्सराः ॥१३॥
13. kā tvaṁ brūhi yathā bhadre nāsi dāsī kathaṁcana ,
yakṣī vā yadi vā devī gandharvī yadi vāpsarāḥ.
yakṣī vā yadi vā devī gandharvī yadi vāpsarāḥ.

kā tvam brūhi yathā bhadre na asi dāsī kathañcana
yakṣī vā yadi vā devī gandharvī yadi vā apsarāḥ

O gentle one, please tell me who you are, for you are certainly not a maidservant. Are you a Yakṣī, a goddess, a Gandharvī, or an Apsarā?
अलम्बुसा मिश्रकेशी पुण्डरीकाथ मालिनी ।
इन्द्राणी वारुणी वा त्वं त्वष्टुर्धातुः प्रजापतेः ।
देव्यो देवेषु विख्यातास्तासां त्वं कतमा शुभे ॥१४॥
इन्द्राणी वारुणी वा त्वं त्वष्टुर्धातुः प्रजापतेः ।
देव्यो देवेषु विख्यातास्तासां त्वं कतमा शुभे ॥१४॥
14. alambusā miśrakeśī puṇḍarīkātha mālinī ,
indrāṇī vāruṇī vā tvaṁ tvaṣṭurdhātuḥ prajāpateḥ ,
devyo deveṣu vikhyātāstāsāṁ tvaṁ katamā śubhe.
indrāṇī vāruṇī vā tvaṁ tvaṣṭurdhātuḥ prajāpateḥ ,
devyo deveṣu vikhyātāstāsāṁ tvaṁ katamā śubhe.

alambusā miśrakeśī puṇḍarīkā atha
mālinī indrāṇī vāruṇī vā tvam tvaṣṭuḥ
dhātuḥ prajāpateḥ devyaḥ deveṣu
vikhyātāḥ tāsām tvam katamā śubhe
mālinī indrāṇī vāruṇī vā tvam tvaṣṭuḥ
dhātuḥ prajāpateḥ devyaḥ deveṣu
vikhyātāḥ tāsām tvam katamā śubhe

Are you Alambuṣā, Miśrakeśī, Puṇḍarīkā, or Mālinī? Are you Indrāṇī or Varuṇī? Or are you a daughter of Tvaṣṭā, Dhātā, or Prajāpati? Among these goddesses, who are renowned among the gods, which one are you, O auspicious one?
द्रौपद्युवाच ।
नास्मि देवी न गन्धर्वी नासुरी न च राक्षसी ।
सैरन्ध्री तु भुजिष्यास्मि सत्यमेतद्ब्रवीमि ते ॥१५॥
नास्मि देवी न गन्धर्वी नासुरी न च राक्षसी ।
सैरन्ध्री तु भुजिष्यास्मि सत्यमेतद्ब्रवीमि ते ॥१५॥
15. draupadyuvāca ,
nāsmi devī na gandharvī nāsurī na ca rākṣasī ,
sairandhrī tu bhujiṣyāsmi satyametadbravīmi te.
nāsmi devī na gandharvī nāsurī na ca rākṣasī ,
sairandhrī tu bhujiṣyāsmi satyametadbravīmi te.

draupadī uvāca na asmi devī na gandharvī na asurī na ca
rākṣasī sairandhrī tu bhujiṣyā asmi satyam etat bravīmi te
rākṣasī sairandhrī tu bhujiṣyā asmi satyam etat bravīmi te

Draupadī replied: 'I am not a goddess, nor a Gandharvī, nor an Asurī, nor a Rākṣasī. Indeed, I am a Sairandhrī, a dependent attendant. I tell you this truth.'
केशाञ्जानाम्यहं कर्तुं पिंषे साधु विलेपनम् ।
ग्रथयिष्ये विचित्राश्च स्रजः परमशोभनाः ॥१६॥

16. keśāñjānāmyahaṁ kartuṁ piṁṣe sādhu vilepanam ,
grathayiṣye vicitrāśca srajaḥ paramaśobhanāḥ.

keśān jānāmi aham kartum piṃṣe sādhu vilepanam

I know how to arrange hair. I skillfully prepare unguents. And I will string diverse, exceedingly beautiful garlands.
आराधयं सत्यभामां कृष्णस्य महिषीं प्रियाम् ।
कृष्णां च भार्यां पाण्डूनां कुरूणामेकसुन्दरीम् ॥१७॥

17. ārādhayaṁ satyabhāmāṁ kṛṣṇasya mahiṣīṁ priyām ,
kṛṣṇāṁ ca bhāryāṁ pāṇḍūnāṁ kurūṇāmekasundarīm.

ārādhayam satyabhāmām kṛṣṇasya mahiṣīm priyām
kṛṣṇām ca bhāryām pāṇḍūnām kurūṇām ekasundarīm
kṛṣṇām ca bhāryām pāṇḍūnām kurūṇām ekasundarīm

I attended to Satyabhāmā, Krishna's beloved queen, and Draupadī, the wife of the Pāṇḍavas, who was the most beautiful woman among the Kurus.
तत्र तत्र चराम्येवं लभमाना सुशोभनम् ।
वासांसि यावच्च लभे तावत्तावद्रमे तथा ॥१८॥
वासांसि यावच्च लभे तावत्तावद्रमे तथा ॥१८॥
18. tatra tatra carāmyevaṁ labhamānā suśobhanam ,
vāsāṁsi yāvacca labhe tāvattāvadrame tathā.

vāsāṃsi yāvat ca labhe tāvat tāvat rame tathā

I roam about in various places, acquiring beautiful things. As long as I obtain clothes, I enjoy myself accordingly.
मालिनीत्येव मे नाम स्वयं देवी चकार सा ।
साहमभ्यागता देवि सुदेष्णे त्वन्निवेशनम् ॥१९॥

19. mālinītyeva me nāma svayaṁ devī cakāra sā ,
sāhamabhyāgatā devi sudeṣṇe tvanniveśanam.

sā aham abhyāgatā devi sudeṣṇe tvanniveśanam

"Mālinī"—this is indeed the name the queen herself gave me. O Queen Sudeshṇā, that very person, I have come to your abode.
सुदेष्णोवाच ।
मूर्ध्नि त्वां वासयेयं वै संशयो मे न विद्यते ।
नो चेदिह तु राजा त्वां गच्छेत्सर्वेण चेतसा ॥२०॥
मूर्ध्नि त्वां वासयेयं वै संशयो मे न विद्यते ।
नो चेदिह तु राजा त्वां गच्छेत्सर्वेण चेतसा ॥२०॥
20. sudeṣṇovāca ,
mūrdhni tvāṁ vāsayeyaṁ vai saṁśayo me na vidyate ,
no cediha tu rājā tvāṁ gacchetsarveṇa cetasā.
mūrdhni tvāṁ vāsayeyaṁ vai saṁśayo me na vidyate ,
no cediha tu rājā tvāṁ gacchetsarveṇa cetasā.
20.
sudeṣṇā uvāca mūrdhni tvām vāsayeyam vai saṃśayaḥ me na
vidyate na u cet iha tu rājā tvām gacchet sarveṇa cetasā
vidyate na u cet iha tu rājā tvām gacchet sarveṇa cetasā
20.
Sudeshṇā said: "Indeed, I would place you upon my head; I have no doubt about that. But if not, then the king here would certainly approach you with his entire mind."
स्त्रियो राजकुले पश्य याश्चेमा मम वेश्मनि ।
प्रसक्तास्त्वां निरीक्षन्ते पुमांसं कं न मोहयेः ॥२१॥
प्रसक्तास्त्वां निरीक्षन्ते पुमांसं कं न मोहयेः ॥२१॥
21. striyo rājakule paśya yāścemā mama veśmani ,
prasaktāstvāṁ nirīkṣante pumāṁsaṁ kaṁ na mohayeḥ.

striyaḥ rājākule paśya yāḥ ca imāḥ mama veśmani |

Observe the women in the royal palace, and also those in my own house; captivated, they gaze at you. What man would you not enchant?
वृक्षांश्चावस्थितान्पश्य य इमे मम वेश्मनि ।
तेऽपि त्वां संनमन्तीव पुमांसं कं न मोहयेः ॥२२॥
तेऽपि त्वां संनमन्तीव पुमांसं कं न मोहयेः ॥२२॥
22. vṛkṣāṁścāvasthitānpaśya ya ime mama veśmani ,
te'pi tvāṁ saṁnamantīva pumāṁsaṁ kaṁ na mohayeḥ.
te'pi tvāṁ saṁnamantīva pumāṁsaṁ kaṁ na mohayeḥ.
22.
vṛkṣān ca avasthitān paśya ye ime mama veśmani |
te api tvām saṃnamanti iva pumāṃsaṃ kam na mohayeḥ
te api tvām saṃnamanti iva pumāṃsaṃ kam na mohayeḥ

Also observe the trees standing in my house; even they seem to bow down to you. What man would you not enchant?
राजा विराटः सुश्रोणि दृष्ट्वा वपुरमानुषम् ।
विहाय मां वरारोहे त्वां गच्छेत्सर्वचेतसा ॥२३॥

23. rājā virāṭaḥ suśroṇi dṛṣṭvā vapuramānuṣam ,
vihāya māṁ varārohe tvāṁ gacchetsarvacetasā.

O lovely-hipped one, King Virata, upon seeing your superhuman form, would abandon me, O excellent-hipped woman, and go to you with his whole heart.
यं हि त्वमनवद्याङ्गि नरमायतलोचने ।
प्रसक्तमभिवीक्षेथाः स कामवशगो भवेत् ॥२४॥
प्रसक्तमभिवीक्षेथाः स कामवशगो भवेत् ॥२४॥
24. yaṁ hi tvamanavadyāṅgi naramāyatalocane ,
prasaktamabhivīkṣethāḥ sa kāmavaśago bhavet.

yam hi tvam anavadyāṅgi naram āyatālocane |
prasaktam abhivīkṣethāḥ saḥ kāmavaśagaḥ bhavet

O flawless-limbed one, O long-eyed one, any man upon whom you would cast your gaze, he would certainly become captivated and subservient to desire (kāma).
यश्च त्वां सततं पश्येत्पुरुषश्चारुहासिनि ।
एवं सर्वानवद्याङ्गि स चानङ्गवशो भवेत् ॥२५॥
एवं सर्वानवद्याङ्गि स चानङ्गवशो भवेत् ॥२५॥
25. yaśca tvāṁ satataṁ paśyetpuruṣaścāruhāsini ,
evaṁ sarvānavadyāṅgi sa cānaṅgavaśo bhavet.

yaḥ ca tvām satatam paśyet puruṣaḥ cāruhāsinī
evam sarvānavadyāṅgi saḥ ca anaṅgavaśaḥ bhavet
evam sarvānavadyāṅgi saḥ ca anaṅgavaśaḥ bhavet
25.
O charmingly smiling woman, and O woman of entirely faultless limbs, whoever constantly looks at you will thus fall under the sway of Kāmadeva (the god of love).
यथा कर्कटकी गर्भमाधत्ते मृत्युमात्मनः ।
तथाविधमहं मन्ये वासं तव शुचिस्मिते ॥२६॥

O pure-smiling woman, just as a female crab carries offspring that lead to its own death (ātman), so too do I consider your presence to be of a similar nature (i.e., bringing death).
द्रौपद्युवाच ।
नास्मि लभ्या विराटेन न चान्येन कथंचन ।
गन्धर्वाः पतयो मह्यं युवानः पञ्च भामिनि ॥२७॥

Draupadi said: 'O passionate woman, I am not to be obtained by Virāṭa, nor by anyone else in any manner. Five young Gandharvas are my husbands.'
पुत्रा गन्धर्वराजस्य महासत्त्वस्य कस्यचित् ।
रक्षन्ति ते च मां नित्यं दुःखाचारा तथा न्वहम् ॥२८॥

They are the sons of some great and mighty Gandharva king. And they constantly protect me, because I am of difficult (or strict) conduct (dharma), and so it is with me.
यो मे न दद्यादुच्छिष्टं न च पादौ प्रधावयेत् ।
प्रीयेयुस्तेन वासेन गन्धर्वाः पतयो मम ॥२९॥

If anyone does not offer me food remnants, nor wash my feet, my husbands, the Gandharvas, would be pleased by my residence (here).

तामेव स ततो रात्रिं प्रविशेदपरां तनुम् ॥३०॥

Indeed, if any man (puruṣa) desires me as he would other ordinary women, then he shall enter another body that very night (i.e., he will die).
न चाप्यहं चालयितुं शक्या केनचिदङ्गने ।
दुःखशीला हि गन्धर्वास्ते च मे बलवत्तराः ॥३१॥

31. na cāpyahaṁ cālayituṁ śakyā kenacidaṅgane ,

And I, O lady, cannot be swayed or disturbed by anyone. For my husbands, the Gandharvas, are indeed of a fierce disposition, and they are exceedingly powerful.
सुदेष्णोवाच ।
एवं त्वां वासयिष्यामि यथा त्वं नन्दिनीच्छसि ।
न च पादौ न चोच्छिष्टं स्प्रक्ष्यसि त्वं कथंचन ॥३२॥

Sudeshna said, 'I shall arrange for your stay here just as you, O Nandini, wish. And you shall certainly not touch anyone's feet or food remnants at all.'

एवं कृष्णा विराटस्य भार्यया परिसान्त्विता ।
न चैनां वेद तत्रान्यस्तत्त्वेन जनमेजय ॥३३॥

Vaiśampāyana said: O Janamejaya, in this way, Kṛṣṇā (Draupadī) was consoled by Virāṭa's wife, and no one else there truly knew her identity.
