वैशंपायन उवाच ।
गतेषु तेषु सर्वेषु तपस्विषु महात्मसु ।
पिनाकपाणिर्भगवान्सर्वपापहरो हरः ॥१॥
1. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
gateṣu teṣu sarveṣu tapasviṣu mahātmasu ,

1. Vaiśampāyana said: After all those great-souled ascetics (tapasvis) had departed, Lord Hara, the divine being who holds the Pināka bow and removes all sins -
कैरातं वेषमास्थाय काञ्चनद्रुमसंनिभम् ।
विभ्राजमानो वपुषा गिरिर्मेरुरिवापरः ॥२॥
2. kairātaṁ veṣamāsthāya kāñcanadrumasaṁnibham ,
vibhrājamāno vapuṣā girirmerurivāparaḥ.
2. kairātaṃ veṣam āsthāya kāñcanadrumasaṃnibham
vibhrājamānaḥ vapuṣā giriḥ meruḥ iva aparaḥ
2. Assuming the guise of a Kirāta (hunter), resembling a golden tree, he shone brightly with his body, like another Mount Meru.
श्रीमद्धनुरुपादाय शरांश्चाशीविषोपमान् ।
निष्पपात महार्चिष्मान्दहन्कक्षमिवानलः ॥३॥
3. śrīmaddhanurupādāya śarāṁścāśīviṣopamān ,
niṣpapāta mahārciṣmāndahankakṣamivānalaḥ.
3. śrīmat dhanuḥ upādāya śarān ca āśīviṣopamān
niṣpapāta mahārciṣmān dahan kakṣam iva analaḥ
3. Taking up his splendid bow and arrows that resembled venomous snakes, the greatly radiant one emerged, burning like a fire consuming dry grass.
देव्या सहोमया श्रीमान्समानव्रतवेषया ।
नानावेषधरैर्हृष्टैर्भूतैरनुगतस्तदा ॥४॥
4. devyā sahomayā śrīmānsamānavrataveṣayā ,
nānāveṣadharairhṛṣṭairbhūtairanugatastadā.
4. devyā saha umayā śrīmān samānavrataveṣayā
nānāveṣadharaiḥ hṛṣṭaiḥ bhūtaiḥ anugataḥ tadā
4. The glorious Lord (Shiva) was then accompanied by the goddess Umā, who shared his vow and attire, and by his delighted attendants (bhūtas) who wore various disguises.
किरातवेषप्रच्छन्नः स्त्रीभिश्चानु सहस्रशः ।
अशोभत तदा राजन्स देवोऽतीव भारत ॥५॥
5. kirātaveṣapracchannaḥ strībhiścānu sahasraśaḥ ,
aśobhata tadā rājansa devo'tīva bhārata.
5. kirātaveṣapracchannaḥ strībhiḥ ca anu sahasraśaḥ
aśobhata tadā rājan saḥ devaḥ atīva bhārata
5. O King, O Bhārata, that god, concealed in the guise of a Kirāta and accompanied by thousands of women, then shone exceedingly.
क्षणेन तद्वनं सर्वं निःशब्दमभवत्तदा ।
नादः प्रस्रवणानां च पक्षिणां चाप्युपारमत् ॥६॥
6. kṣaṇena tadvanaṁ sarvaṁ niḥśabdamabhavattadā ,
nādaḥ prasravaṇānāṁ ca pakṣiṇāṁ cāpyupāramat.
6. kṣaṇena tat vanam sarvam niḥśabdam abhavat tadā
nādaḥ prasravaṇānām ca pakṣiṇām ca api upāramat
6. In an instant, that entire forest became silent. The sound of the waterfalls and even the birds' chirping ceased.
स संनिकर्षमागम्य पार्थस्याक्लिष्टकर्मणः ।
मूकं नाम दितेः पुत्रं ददर्शाद्भुतदर्शनम् ॥७॥
7. sa saṁnikarṣamāgamya pārthasyākliṣṭakarmaṇaḥ ,
mūkaṁ nāma diteḥ putraṁ dadarśādbhutadarśanam.
7. saḥ saṃnikarṣam āgamya pārthasya akliṣṭakarmaṇaḥ
mūkam nāma diteḥ putram dadarśa adbhutadarśanam
7. Approaching Arjuna (Pārtha), who was engaged in unwearied actions (karma), he saw Mūka, a son of Diti, who possessed a wondrous form.
वाराहं रूपमास्थाय तर्कयन्तमिवार्जुनम् ।
हन्तुं परमदुष्टात्मा तमुवाचाथ फल्गुनः ॥८॥
8. vārāhaṁ rūpamāsthāya tarkayantamivārjunam ,
hantuṁ paramaduṣṭātmā tamuvācātha phalgunaḥ.
8. vārāham rūpam āsthāya tarkayantam iva arjunam
hantum paramaduṣṭātmā tam uvāca atha phālgunaḥ
8. The exceedingly evil-minded Mūka assumed the form of a boar, appearing as if challenging Arjuna, with the intent to kill him. Then Arjuna (Phālguna) spoke to him.
गाण्डीवं धनुरादाय शरांश्चाशीविषोपमान् ।
सज्यं धनुर्वरं कृत्वा ज्याघोषेण निनादयन् ॥९॥
9. gāṇḍīvaṁ dhanurādāya śarāṁścāśīviṣopamān ,
sajyaṁ dhanurvaraṁ kṛtvā jyāghoṣeṇa ninādayan.
9. gāṇḍīvam dhanuḥ ādāya śarān ca āśīviṣopamān
sajyam dhanurvaram kṛtvā jyāghoṣeṇa ninādayan
9. Taking up the Gāṇḍīva bow and arrows that resembled venomous snakes, and having strung that excellent bow, he made it resound with the twang of its string.
यन्मां प्रार्थयसे हन्तुमनागसमिहागतम् ।
तस्मात्त्वां पूर्वमेवाहं नेष्यामि यमसादनम् ॥१०॥
10. yanmāṁ prārthayase hantumanāgasamihāgatam ,
tasmāttvāṁ pūrvamevāhaṁ neṣyāmi yamasādanam.
10. yat mām prārthayase hantum anāgasam iha āgatam
tasmāt tvām pūrvam eva aham neṣyāmi yamasādanam
10. Because you seek to kill me, who have come here innocent, therefore I shall first lead you to the abode of Yama.
तं दृष्ट्वा प्रहरिष्यन्तं फल्गुनं दृढधन्विनम् ।
किरातरूपी सहसा वारयामास शंकरः ॥११॥
11. taṁ dṛṣṭvā prahariṣyantaṁ phalgunaṁ dṛḍhadhanvinam ,
kirātarūpī sahasā vārayāmāsa śaṁkaraḥ.
11. tam dṛṣṭvā prahariṣyantam phalgunam dṛḍhadhanvinam
kirātarūpī sahasā vārayāmāsa śaṅkaraḥ
11. Seeing Arjuna (phalguṇa), who was a firm archer and was about to strike, Śaṅkara, in the guise of a Kirāta, suddenly stopped him.
मयैष प्रार्थितः पूर्वं नीलमेघसमप्रभः ।
अनादृत्यैव तद्वाक्यं प्रजहाराथ फल्गुनः ॥१२॥
12. mayaiṣa prārthitaḥ pūrvaṁ nīlameghasamaprabhaḥ ,
anādṛtyaiva tadvākyaṁ prajahārātha phalgunaḥ.
12. mayā eṣaḥ prārthitaḥ pūrvam nīlameghasamaprabhaḥ
anādṛtya eva tat vākyam prajahāra atha phalgunaḥ
12. He, whose splendor was like that of a dark cloud, had been requested by me previously. But Arjuna (phalguṇa), disregarding that statement, then struck.
किरातश्च समं तस्मिन्नेकलक्ष्ये महाद्युतिः ।
प्रमुमोचाशनिप्रख्यं शरमग्निशिखोपमम् ॥१३॥
13. kirātaśca samaṁ tasminnekalakṣye mahādyutiḥ ,
pramumocāśaniprakhyaṁ śaramagniśikhopamam.
13. kirātaḥ ca samam tasmin ekalakṣye mahādyutiḥ
pramumoca aśaniprakhyam śaram agniśikhopamam
13. And the greatly resplendent hunter (Kirāta) simultaneously released an arrow, which was like a thunderbolt and resembled a flame of fire, at that single target.
तौ मुक्तौ सायकौ ताभ्यां समं तत्र निपेततुः ।
मूकस्य गात्रे विस्तीर्णे शैलसंहनने तदा ॥१४॥
14. tau muktau sāyakau tābhyāṁ samaṁ tatra nipetatuḥ ,
mūkasya gātre vistīrṇe śailasaṁhanane tadā.
14. tau muktau sāyakau tābhyām samam tatra nipetatuḥ
mūkasya gātre vistīrṇe śailasaṃhanane tadā
14. Those two arrows, released simultaneously by them both, then fell there upon Mūka's vast body, which had the solidity of a rock.
यथाशनिविनिष्पेषो वज्रस्येव च पर्वते ।
तथा तयोः संनिपातः शरयोरभवत्तदा ॥१५॥
15. yathāśaniviniṣpeṣo vajrasyeva ca parvate ,
tathā tayoḥ saṁnipātaḥ śarayorabhavattadā.
15. yathā aśaniviniṣpeṣaḥ vajrasya iva ca parvate
tathā tayoḥ saṃnipātaḥ śarayoḥ abhavat tadā
15. Just as the crushing impact of a thunderbolt, like a vajra, falls upon a mountain, similarly then was the collision of those two arrows.
स विद्धो बहुभिर्बाणैर्दीप्तास्यैः पन्नगैरिव ।
ममार राक्षसं रूपं भूयः कृत्वा विभीषणम् ॥१६॥
16. sa viddho bahubhirbāṇairdīptāsyaiḥ pannagairiva ,
mamāra rākṣasaṁ rūpaṁ bhūyaḥ kṛtvā vibhīṣaṇam.
16. saḥ viddhaḥ bahubhiḥ bāṇaiḥ dīptāsyaiḥ pannagaiḥ
iva mamāra rākṣasam rūpam bhūyaḥ kṛtvā vibhīṣaṇam
16. Pierced by many arrows, as if by serpents with flaming mouths, he died, having again assumed his terrifying demonic (rākṣasa) form.
ददर्शाथ ततो जिष्णुः पुरुषं काञ्चनप्रभम् ।
किरातवेषप्रच्छन्नं स्त्रीसहायममित्रहा ।
तमब्रवीत्प्रीतमनाः कौन्तेयः प्रहसन्निव ॥१७॥
17. dadarśātha tato jiṣṇuḥ puruṣaṁ kāñcanaprabham ,
kirātaveṣapracchannaṁ strīsahāyamamitrahā ,
tamabravītprītamanāḥ kaunteyaḥ prahasanniva.
17. dadarśa atha tataḥ jiṣṇuḥ puruṣam
kāñcanaprabham kirātāveṣaprachannam
strīsahāyam amitraha tam abravīt
prītamanāḥ kaunteyaḥ prahasan iva
17. Then Arjuna (Jiṣṇu), the vanquisher of foes, saw a man gleaming like gold, disguised in the attire of a Kirāta hunter and accompanied by a woman. The son of Kuntī (Kaunteya), feeling pleased in his heart, addressed him as if with a smile.
को भवानटते शून्ये वने स्त्रीगणसंवृतः ।
न त्वमस्मिन्वने घोरे बिभेषि कनकप्रभ ॥१८॥
18. ko bhavānaṭate śūnye vane strīgaṇasaṁvṛtaḥ ,
na tvamasminvane ghore bibheṣi kanakaprabha.
18. kaḥ bhavān aṭate śūnye vane strīgaṇasaṃvṛtaḥ
na tvam asmin vane ghore bibheṣi kanakaprabha
18. "Who are you, wandering in this deserted forest, accompanied by a group of women? O one radiant like gold, do you not feel fear in this dreadful forest?"
किमर्थं च त्वया विद्धो मृगोऽयं मत्परिग्रहः ।
मयाभिपन्नः पूर्वं हि राक्षसोऽयमिहागतः ॥१९॥
19. kimarthaṁ ca tvayā viddho mṛgo'yaṁ matparigrahaḥ ,
mayābhipannaḥ pūrvaṁ hi rākṣaso'yamihāgataḥ.
19. kim artham ca tvayā viddhaḥ mṛgaḥ ayam matparigrahaḥ
mayā abhipannaḥ pūrvam hi rākṣasaḥ ayam iha āgataḥ
19. "And why was this deer, which is my quarry, wounded by you? Indeed, this demon, who has come here, was struck by me previously."
कामात्परिभवाद्वापि न मे जीवन्विमोक्ष्यसे ।
न ह्येष मृगयाधर्मो यस्त्वयाद्य कृतो मयि ।
तेन त्वां भ्रंशयिष्यामि जीवितात्पर्वताश्रय ॥२०॥
20. kāmātparibhavādvāpi na me jīvanvimokṣyase ,
na hyeṣa mṛgayādharmo yastvayādya kṛto mayi ,
tena tvāṁ bhraṁśayiṣyāmi jīvitātparvatāśraya.
20. kāmāt paribhavāt vā api na me jīvan
vimokṣyase na hi eṣaḥ mṛgayādharmaḥ
yaḥ tvayā adya kṛtaḥ mayi tena tvām
bhraṃśayiṣyāmi jīvitāt parvatāśraya
20. "Whether from desire or from disdain, you will not escape me alive. For this is not the natural law (dharma) of hunting that you have practiced against me today. Therefore, O dweller of the mountains, I will certainly deprive you of your life."
इत्युक्तः पाण्डवेयेन किरातः प्रहसन्निव ।
उवाच श्लक्ष्णया वाचा पाण्डवं सव्यसाचिनम् ॥२१॥
21. ityuktaḥ pāṇḍaveyena kirātaḥ prahasanniva ,
uvāca ślakṣṇayā vācā pāṇḍavaṁ savyasācinam.
21. iti uktaḥ pāṇḍaveyena kirātaḥ prahasan iva
uvāca ślakṣṇayā vācā pāṇḍavam savyasācinam
21. Thus addressed by the son of Pāṇḍu, the Kirāta, as if smiling, spoke with a gentle voice to the Pāṇḍava, Arjuna (savyasācin).
ममैवायं लक्ष्यभूतः पूर्वमेव परिग्रहः ।
ममैव च प्रहारेण जीविताद्व्यवरोपितः ॥२२॥
22. mamaivāyaṁ lakṣyabhūtaḥ pūrvameva parigrahaḥ ,
mamaiva ca prahāreṇa jīvitādvyavaropitaḥ.
22. mama eva ayam lakṣyabhūtaḥ pūrvam eva parigrahaḥ
mama eva ca prahāreṇa jīvitāt vyavaropitaḥ
22. This (boar) became my target and was claimed by me much earlier. Moreover, it was deprived of its life by my very own strike.
दोषान्स्वान्नार्हसेऽन्यस्मै वक्तुं स्वबलदर्पितः ।
अभिषक्तोऽस्मि मन्दात्मन्न मे जीवन्विमोक्ष्यसे ॥२३॥
23. doṣānsvānnārhase'nyasmai vaktuṁ svabaladarpitaḥ ,
abhiṣakto'smi mandātmanna me jīvanvimokṣyase.
23. doṣān svān na arhase anyasmai vaktum svabaladarpitaḥ
abhiṣaktaḥ asmi mandātman na me jīvan vimokṣyase
23. Proud of your own strength, you should not attribute your own faults to another. O foolish one, you are now assailed by me; you will not escape from me alive.
स्थिरो भवस्व मोक्ष्यामि सायकानशनीनिव ।
घटस्व परया शक्त्या मुञ्च त्वमपि सायकान् ॥२४॥
24. sthiro bhavasva mokṣyāmi sāyakānaśanīniva ,
ghaṭasva parayā śaktyā muñca tvamapi sāyakān.
24. sthiraḥ bhavasva mokṣyāmi sāyakān aśanīn iva
ghaṭasva parayā śaktyā muñca tvam api sāyakān
24. Stand firm! I will release arrows like thunderbolts. Exert yourself with utmost power (śakti), and you too release your arrows!
ततस्तौ तत्र संरब्धौ गर्जमानौ मुहुर्मुहुः ।
शरैराशीविषाकारैस्ततक्षाते परस्परम् ॥२५॥
25. tatastau tatra saṁrabdhau garjamānau muhurmuhuḥ ,
śarairāśīviṣākāraistatakṣāte parasparam.
25. tataḥ tau tatra saṃrabdhau garjamānau muhuḥ
muhuḥ śaraiḥ āśīviṣākāraiḥ tatakṣāte parasparam
25. Then, enraged and roaring repeatedly, those two (Arjuna and Shiva) fiercely struck each other there with arrows resembling venomous snakes.
ततोऽर्जुनः शरवर्षं किराते समवासृजत् ।
तत्प्रसन्नेन मनसा प्रतिजग्राह शंकरः ॥२६॥
26. tato'rjunaḥ śaravarṣaṁ kirāte samavāsṛjat ,
tatprasannena manasā pratijagrāha śaṁkaraḥ.
26. tataḥ arjunaḥ śaravarṣam kirāte sam avāsṛjat
tat prasannena manasā pratijagrāha śaṅkaraḥ
26. Then Arjuna unleashed a shower of arrows upon the Kirāta. Śaṅkara, with a serene mind, received that (shower of arrows).
मुहूर्तं शरवर्षं तत्प्रतिगृह्य पिनाकधृक् ।
अक्षतेन शरीरेण तस्थौ गिरिरिवाचलः ॥२७॥
27. muhūrtaṁ śaravarṣaṁ tatpratigṛhya pinākadhṛk ,
akṣatena śarīreṇa tasthau giririvācalaḥ.
27. muhūrtam śaravarṣam tat pratigṛhya pinākadhṛk
akṣatena śarīreṇa tasthau giriḥ iva acalaḥ
27. After receiving that shower of arrows for a moment, Pinākadhṛk (Shiva), the wielder of the bow Pināka, stood with an unharmed body, like an unmoving mountain.
स दृष्ट्वा बाणवर्षं तन्मोघीभूतं धनंजयः ।
परमं विस्मयं चक्रे साधु साध्विति चाब्रवीत् ॥२८॥
28. sa dṛṣṭvā bāṇavarṣaṁ tanmoghībhūtaṁ dhanaṁjayaḥ ,
paramaṁ vismayaṁ cakre sādhu sādhviti cābravīt.
28. saḥ dṛṣṭvā bāṇavarṣam tat moghībhūtam dhanaṃjayaḥ
paramam vismayam cakre sādhu sādhu iti ca abravīt
28. Seeing that shower of arrows rendered ineffective, Dhananjaya (Arjuna) was greatly astonished and exclaimed, "Excellent! Excellent!"
अहोऽयं सुकुमाराङ्गो हिमवच्छिखरालयः ।
गाण्डीवमुक्तान्नाराचान्प्रतिगृह्णात्यविह्वलः ॥२९॥
29. aho'yaṁ sukumārāṅgo himavacchikharālayaḥ ,
gāṇḍīvamuktānnārācānpratigṛhṇātyavihvalaḥ.
29. aho ayam sukumārāṅgaḥ himavat-śikharālayaḥ
gāṇḍīva-muktān nārācān pratigṛhṇāti avihvalaḥ
29. Oh, this one, whose limbs are so delicate, and whose abode is on the peaks of the Himalayas, receives the arrows released from the Gāṇḍīva bow without being perturbed.
कोऽयं देवो भवेत्साक्षाद्रुद्रो यक्षः सुरेश्वरः ।
विद्यते हि गिरिश्रेष्ठे त्रिदशानां समागमः ॥३०॥
30. ko'yaṁ devo bhavetsākṣādrudro yakṣaḥ sureśvaraḥ ,
vidyate hi giriśreṣṭhe tridaśānāṁ samāgamaḥ.
30. kaḥ ayam devaḥ bhavet sākṣāt rudraḥ yakṣaḥ sura-īśvaraḥ
vidyate hi giri-śreṣṭhe tridaśānām samāgamaḥ
30. Who could this god be? Is he Rudra himself, or a Yakṣa, or the lord of gods? For indeed, on this supreme mountain, there is a gathering of the gods.
न हि मद्बाणजालानामुत्सृष्टानां सहस्रशः ।
शक्तोऽन्यः सहितुं वेगमृते देवं पिनाकिनम् ॥३१॥
31. na hi madbāṇajālānāmutsṛṣṭānāṁ sahasraśaḥ ,
śakto'nyaḥ sahituṁ vegamṛte devaṁ pinākinam.
31. na hi mat-bāṇa-jālānām utsṛṣṭānām sahasraśaḥ
śaktaḥ anyaḥ sahitum vegam ṛte devam pinākinam
31. Indeed, no other is capable of withstanding the force of my arrows, released by the thousands, except for the god Pinākin (Shiva).
देवो वा यदि वा यक्षो रुद्रादन्यो व्यवस्थितः ।
अहमेनं शरैस्तीक्ष्णैर्नयामि यमसादनम् ॥३२॥
32. devo vā yadi vā yakṣo rudrādanyo vyavasthitaḥ ,
ahamenaṁ śaraistīkṣṇairnayāmi yamasādanam.
32. devaḥ vā yadi vā yakṣaḥ rudrāt anyaḥ vyavasthitaḥ
aham enam śaraiḥ tīkṣṇaiḥ nayāmi yama-sādanam
32. Whether he is a god or a Yakṣa, if he is anyone other than Rudra, I will send him to the abode of Yama (the god of death) with my sharp arrows.
ततो हृष्टमना जिष्णुर्नाराचान्मर्मभेदिनः ।
व्यसृजच्छतधा राजन्मयूखानिव भास्करः ॥३३॥
33. tato hṛṣṭamanā jiṣṇurnārācānmarmabhedinaḥ ,
vyasṛjacchatadhā rājanmayūkhāniva bhāskaraḥ.
33. tataḥ hṛṣṭamanā jiṣṇuḥ nārācān marmabhedinaḥ
vyasṛjat śatadhā rājan mayūkhān iva bhāskaraḥ
33. O King, then Arjuna, his mind filled with joy, released hundreds of arrows capable of piercing vital spots, just as the sun emits its rays.
तान्प्रसन्नेन मनसा भगवाँल्लोकभावनः ।
शूलपाणिः प्रत्यगृह्णाच्छिलावर्षमिवाचलः ॥३४॥
34. tānprasannena manasā bhagavāँllokabhāvanaḥ ,
śūlapāṇiḥ pratyagṛhṇācchilāvarṣamivācalaḥ.
34. tān prasannena manasā bhagavān lokabhāvanaḥ
śūlapāṇiḥ pratyagṛhṇāt śilāvarṣam iva acalaḥ
34. The venerable Lord (bhagavān) Shiva (śūlapāṇiḥ), the sustainer of worlds (lokabhāvanaḥ), with a serene mind, received those arrows just as an immovable mountain receives a shower of stones.
क्षणेन क्षीणबाणोऽथ संवृत्तः फल्गुनस्तदा ।
वित्रासं च जगामाथ तं दृष्ट्वा शरसंक्षयम् ॥३५॥
35. kṣaṇena kṣīṇabāṇo'tha saṁvṛttaḥ phalgunastadā ,
vitrāsaṁ ca jagāmātha taṁ dṛṣṭvā śarasaṁkṣayam.
35. kṣaṇena kṣīṇabāṇaḥ atha saṃvṛttaḥ phalgunaḥ tadā
vitrāsam ca jagāma atha tam dṛṣṭvā śarasaṃkṣayam
35. In an instant, Arjuna's arrows were depleted. Then, seeing that exhaustion of his arrows, he became greatly alarmed.
चिन्तयामास जिष्णुस्तु भगवन्तं हुताशनम् ।
पुरस्तादक्षयौ दत्तौ तूणौ येनास्य खाण्डवे ॥३६॥
36. cintayāmāsa jiṣṇustu bhagavantaṁ hutāśanam ,
purastādakṣayau dattau tūṇau yenāsya khāṇḍave.
36. cintayāmāsa jiṣṇuḥ tu bhagavantaṃ hutāśanam
purastāt akṣayau dattau tūṇau yena asya khāṇḍave
36. But Arjuna reflected on the venerable Agni (hutāśanam), by whom he had previously been given two inexhaustible quivers during the Khaṇḍava incident.
किं नु मोक्ष्यामि धनुषा यन्मे बाणाः क्षयं गताः ।
अयं च पुरुषः कोऽपि बाणान्ग्रसति सर्वशः ॥३७॥
37. kiṁ nu mokṣyāmi dhanuṣā yanme bāṇāḥ kṣayaṁ gatāḥ ,
ayaṁ ca puruṣaḥ ko'pi bāṇāngrasati sarvaśaḥ.
37. kim nu mokṣyāmi dhanuṣā yat me bāṇāḥ kṣayam gatāḥ
ayam ca puruṣaḥ kaḥ api bāṇān grasati sarvaśaḥ
37. What shall I do with my bow now that my arrows are exhausted? And this person, whoever he is, devours all arrows completely.
अहमेनं धनुष्कोट्या शूलाग्रेणेव कुञ्जरम् ।
नयामि दण्डधारस्य यमस्य सदनं प्रति ॥३८॥
38. ahamenaṁ dhanuṣkoṭyā śūlāgreṇeva kuñjaram ,
nayāmi daṇḍadhārasya yamasya sadanaṁ prati.
38. aham enam dhanuṣkoṭyā śūla agreṇa iva kuñjaram
nayāmi daṇḍadhārasya yamasya sadanam prati
38. With the tip of my bow, I will lead this one - just as an elephant is led with a spear-point - to the abode of Yama, the wielder of the rod (daṇḍa).
संप्रायुध्यद्धनुष्कोट्या कौन्तेयः परवीरहा ।
तदप्यस्य धनुर्दिव्यं जग्रास गिरिगोचरः ॥३९॥
39. saṁprāyudhyaddhanuṣkoṭyā kaunteyaḥ paravīrahā ,
tadapyasya dhanurdivyaṁ jagrāsa girigocaraḥ.
39. samprāyudhyat dhanuṣkoṭyā kaunteyaḥ paravīrahā
tat api asya dhanuḥ divyam jagrāsa girigocaraḥ
39. Then Arjuna (Kaunteya), the slayer of enemy heroes, fought with the tip of his bow. But even his divine bow was devoured by the mountain-dweller.
ततोऽर्जुनो ग्रस्तधनुः खड्गपाणिरतिष्ठत ।
युद्धस्यान्तमभीप्सन्वै वेगेनाभिजगाम तम् ॥४०॥
40. tato'rjuno grastadhanuḥ khaḍgapāṇiratiṣṭhata ,
yuddhasyāntamabhīpsanvai vegenābhijagāma tam.
40. tataḥ arjunaḥ grastadhanuḥ khaḍgapāṇiḥ atiṣṭhata
yuddhasya antam abhīpsan vai vegena abhijagāma tam
40. Then Arjuna, his bow devoured and sword in hand, stood (there). Indeed, desiring the end of the battle, he rapidly approached him.
तस्य मूर्ध्नि शितं खड्गमसक्तं पर्वतेष्वपि ।
मुमोच भुजवीर्येण विक्रम्य कुरुनन्दनः ।
तस्य मूर्धानमासाद्य पफालासिवरो हि सः ॥४१॥
41. tasya mūrdhni śitaṁ khaḍgamasaktaṁ parvateṣvapi ,
mumoca bhujavīryeṇa vikramya kurunandanaḥ ,
tasya mūrdhānamāsādya paphālāsivaro hi saḥ.
41. tasya mūrdhni śitam khaḍgam asaktam
parvateṣu api mumoca bhujavīryeṇa
vikramya kurunandanaḥ tasya
mūrdhānam āsādya paphāla asivaraḥ hi saḥ
41. The delight of the Kurus (Arjuna), having exerted his might, hurled a sharp sword - one that would not get stuck even on mountains - onto his head with the strength of his arm. Indeed, upon reaching his head, that excellent sword shattered.
ततो वृक्षैः शिलाभिश्च योधयामास फल्गुनः ।
यथा वृक्षान्महाकायः प्रत्यगृह्णादथो शिलाः ॥४२॥
42. tato vṛkṣaiḥ śilābhiśca yodhayāmāsa phalgunaḥ ,
yathā vṛkṣānmahākāyaḥ pratyagṛhṇādatho śilāḥ.
42. tataḥ vṛkṣaiḥ śilābhiḥ ca yodhayāmāsa phalgunah
yathā vṛkṣān mahākāyaḥ pratyagṛhṇāt atho śilāḥ
42. Then Arjuna fought with trees and rocks. Just as the great-bodied (Kirāta) received the trees, so too did he receive the rocks.
किरातरूपी भगवांस्ततः पार्थो महाबलः ।
मुष्टिभिर्वज्रसंस्पर्शैर्धूममुत्पादयन्मुखे ।
प्रजहार दुराधर्षे किरातसमरूपिणि ॥४३॥
43. kirātarūpī bhagavāṁstataḥ pārtho mahābalaḥ ,
muṣṭibhirvajrasaṁsparśairdhūmamutpādayanmukhe ,
prajahāra durādharṣe kirātasamarūpiṇi.

43. Then, the mighty Arjuna struck the Lord (Śiva), who was in the form of a Kirāta and was unassailable, on the face with fists that had the impact of a thunderbolt, causing smoke to rise.
ततः शक्राशनिसमैर्मुष्टिभिर्भृशदारुणैः ।
किरातरूपी भगवानर्दयामास फल्गुनम् ॥४४॥
44. tataḥ śakrāśanisamairmuṣṭibhirbhṛśadāruṇaiḥ ,
kirātarūpī bhagavānardayāmāsa phalgunam.
44. tataḥ śakrāśanisamaiḥ muṣṭibhiḥ bhṛśadāruṇaiḥ

44. Then, the Lord (Śiva), disguised as a Kirāta, tormented Arjuna with exceedingly fierce fists that were comparable to Indra's thunderbolt.
ततश्चटचटाशब्दः सुघोरः समजायत ।
पाण्डवस्य च मुष्टीनां किरातस्य च युध्यतः ॥४५॥
45. tataścaṭacaṭāśabdaḥ sughoraḥ samajāyata ,
pāṇḍavasya ca muṣṭīnāṁ kirātasya ca yudhyataḥ.
45. tataḥ caṭacaṭāśabdaḥ sughoraḥ samajāyata
pāṇḍavasya ca muṣṭīnām kirātasya ca yudhyataḥ
45. Then, a very dreadful cracking and thudding sound arose from the fists of the fighting Pāṇḍava and the Kirāta.
सुमुहूर्तं महद्युद्धमासीत्तल्लोमहर्षणम् ।
भुजप्रहारसंयुक्तं वृत्रवासवयोरिव ॥४६॥
46. sumuhūrtaṁ mahadyuddhamāsīttallomaharṣaṇam ,
bhujaprahārasaṁyuktaṁ vṛtravāsavayoriva.
46. sumuhūrtam mahat yuddham āsīt tat lomaharṣaṇam
bhujaprahārasaṃyuktam vṛtravāsavayoḥ iva
46. For a short duration, that great, hair-raising battle, which involved blows from their arms, was like the one between Vṛtra and Vāsava (Indra).
जहाराथ ततो जिष्णुः किरातमुरसा बली ।
पाण्डवं च विचेष्टन्तं किरातोऽप्यहनद्बलात् ॥४७॥
47. jahārātha tato jiṣṇuḥ kirātamurasā balī ,
pāṇḍavaṁ ca viceṣṭantaṁ kirāto'pyahanadbalāt.
47. jahāra atha tataḥ jiṣṇuḥ kirātam urasā balī
pāṇḍavam ca viceṣṭantam kirātaḥ api ahanat balāt
47. Then, the mighty Arjuna (Jiṣṇu), grappling with his chest, carried away the Kirāta. But the Kirāta also powerfully struck the struggling Pāṇḍava.
तयोर्भुजविनिष्पेषात्संघर्षेणोरसोस्तथा ।
समजायत गात्रेषु पावकोऽङ्गारधूमवान् ॥४८॥
48. tayorbhujaviniṣpeṣātsaṁgharṣeṇorasostathā ,
samajāyata gātreṣu pāvako'ṅgāradhūmavān.
48. tayoḥ bhujaviniṣpeṣāt saṃgharṣeṇa urasoḥ tathā
samajāyata gātreṣu pāvakaḥ aṅgāradhūmavān
48. From the impact and crushing of their arms, and likewise from the friction of their chests, a smoky fire (pāvaka) with glowing embers arose in their very bodies.
तत एनं महादेवः पीड्य गात्रैः सुपीडितम् ।
तेजसा व्याक्रमद्रोषाच्चेतस्तस्य विमोहयन् ॥४९॥
49. tata enaṁ mahādevaḥ pīḍya gātraiḥ supīḍitam ,
tejasā vyākramadroṣāccetastasya vimohayan.
49. tataḥ enam mahādevaḥ pīḍya gātraiḥ supīḍitam
tejasā vyākramat krodhāt cetaḥ tasya vimohayan
49. Then, Mahadeva, having pressed him hard with his limbs until he was thoroughly crushed, angrily overpowered him with his formidable energy, bewildering his mind.
ततो निपीडितैर्गात्रैः पिण्डीकृत इवाबभौ ।
फल्गुनो गात्रसंरुद्धो देवदेवेन भारत ॥५०॥
50. tato nipīḍitairgātraiḥ piṇḍīkṛta ivābabhau ,
phalguno gātrasaṁruddho devadevena bhārata.
50. tataḥ nipīḍitaiḥ gātraiḥ piṇḍīkṛtaḥ iva abababhau
phalgunaḥ gātrasaṃruddhaḥ devadevena bhārata
50. Then, O Bhārata, Arjuna, enveloped and pressed by the limbs of the God of gods, appeared as if he had been compacted into a ball.
निरुच्छ्वासोऽभवच्चैव संनिरुद्धो महात्मना ।
ततः पपात संमूढस्ततः प्रीतोऽभवद्भवः ॥५१॥
51. nirucchvāso'bhavaccaiva saṁniruddho mahātmanā ,
tataḥ papāta saṁmūḍhastataḥ prīto'bhavadbhavaḥ.
51. nirucchvāsaḥ abhavat ca eva saṃniruddhaḥ mahātmanā
tataḥ papāta saṃmūḍhaḥ tataḥ prītaḥ abhavat bhavaḥ
51. He became breathless and indeed completely restrained by the great soul (Mahadeva). Then he fell, utterly bewildered, and at that point, Bhava (Shiva) became pleased.
भगवानुवाच ।
भो भो फल्गुन तुष्टोऽस्मि कर्मणाप्रतिमेन ते ।
शौर्येणानेन धृत्या च क्षत्रियो नास्ति ते समः ॥५२॥
52. bhagavānuvāca ,
bho bho phalguna tuṣṭo'smi karmaṇāpratimena te ,
śauryeṇānena dhṛtyā ca kṣatriyo nāsti te samaḥ.
52. bhagavān uvāca bho bho phalguna tuṣṭaḥ asmi karmaṇā apratimena
te śauryeṇa anena dhṛtyā ca kṣatriyaḥ na asti te samaḥ
52. The Lord (Bhagavān) said: 'O Arjuna, O Arjuna! I am pleased by your incomparable action (karma), by this valor, and by your steadfastness. There is no warrior (kṣatriya) equal to you.'
समं तेजश्च वीर्यं च ममाद्य तव चानघ ।
प्रीतस्तेऽहं महाबाहो पश्य मां पुरुषर्षभ ॥५३॥
53. samaṁ tejaśca vīryaṁ ca mamādya tava cānagha ,
prītaste'haṁ mahābāho paśya māṁ puruṣarṣabha.
53. samam tejaḥ ca vīryam ca mama adya tava ca anagha
| prītaḥ te aham mahābāho paśya mām puruṣarṣabha
53. O sinless one, today my radiance and valor are equal to yours. O mighty-armed one, I am pleased with you. O best among men, behold me.
ददानि ते विशालाक्ष चक्षुः पूर्वऋषिर्भवान् ।
विजेष्यसि रणे शत्रूनपि सर्वान्दिवौकसः ॥५४॥
54. dadāni te viśālākṣa cakṣuḥ pūrvaṛṣirbhavān ,
vijeṣyasi raṇe śatrūnapi sarvāndivaukasaḥ.
54. dadāni te viśālākṣa cakṣuḥ pūrvarṣiḥ bhavān
| vijeṣyasi raṇe śatrūn api sarvān divaukasaḥ
54. O broad-eyed one, I shall grant you divine vision, for you are a primeval sage. You will conquer all enemies in battle, even the celestials.
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
ततो देवं महादेवं गिरिशं शूलपाणिनम् ।
ददर्श फल्गुनस्तत्र सह देव्या महाद्युतिम् ॥५५॥
55. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
tato devaṁ mahādevaṁ giriśaṁ śūlapāṇinam ,
dadarśa phalgunastatra saha devyā mahādyutim.
55. vaiśampāyanaḥ uvāca | tataḥ devam mahādevam giriśam
śūlapāṇinam | dadarśa phalgunaḥ tatra saha devyā mahādyutim
55. Vaiśampāyana said: Then Arjuna saw there the immensely radiant god, Mahādeva, the mountain-dweller (giriśa), trident-wielding (śūlapāṇin), accompanied by his Goddess (Devī).
स जानुभ्यां महीं गत्वा शिरसा प्रणिपत्य च ।
प्रसादयामास हरं पार्थः परपुरंजयः ॥५६॥
56. sa jānubhyāṁ mahīṁ gatvā śirasā praṇipatya ca ,
prasādayāmāsa haraṁ pārthaḥ parapuraṁjayaḥ.
56. saḥ jānubhyām mahīm gatvā śirasā praṇipatya ca
| prasādayāmāsa haram pārthaḥ parapurañjayaḥ
56. He, Pārtha, the conqueror of enemy cities, knelt on the ground and bowed his head, thereby propitiating Hara (Śiva).
अर्जुन उवाच ।
कपर्दिन्सर्वभूतेश भगनेत्रनिपातन ।
व्यतिक्रमं मे भगवन्क्षन्तुमर्हसि शंकर ॥५७॥
57. arjuna uvāca ,
kapardinsarvabhūteśa bhaganetranipātana ,
vyatikramaṁ me bhagavankṣantumarhasi śaṁkara.
57. arjuna uvāca kapardin sarvabhūteśa bhaganetranipātana
vyatikramam me bhagavan kṣantum arhasi śaṅkara
57. Arjuna said: O Kapardin, Lord of all beings, Destroyer of Bhaga's eye, O Lord Shankara, you ought to forgive my transgression.
भवगद्दर्शनाकाङ्क्षी प्राप्तोऽस्मीमं महागिरिम् ।
दयितं तव देवेश तापसालयमुत्तमम् ॥५८॥
58. bhavagaddarśanākāṅkṣī prāpto'smīmaṁ mahāgirim ,
dayitaṁ tava deveśa tāpasālayamuttamam.
58. bhagavatdarśanākāṅkṣī prāptaḥ asmi imam
mahāgirim dayitam tava deveśa tāpasālayam uttamam
58. O Lord of gods, desiring to see you, I have arrived at this great mountain, which is your beloved and excellent abode for ascetics.
प्रसादये त्वां भगवन्सर्वभूतनमस्कृत ।
न मे स्यादपराधोऽयं महादेवातिसाहसात् ॥५९॥
59. prasādaye tvāṁ bhagavansarvabhūtanamaskṛta ,
na me syādaparādho'yaṁ mahādevātisāhasāt.
59. prasādaye tvām bhagavan sarvabhūtanamaskṛta
na me syāt aparādhaḥ ayam mahādeva atisāhasāt
59. O Lord, worshipped by all beings, O Mahadeva, I seek your grace. May this offense of mine, which stemmed from extreme audacity, not be held against me.
कृतो मया यदज्ञानाद्विमर्दोऽयं त्वया सह ।
शरणं संप्रपन्नाय तत्क्षमस्वाद्य शंकर ॥६०॥
60. kṛto mayā yadajñānādvimardo'yaṁ tvayā saha ,
śaraṇaṁ saṁprapannāya tatkṣamasvādya śaṁkara.
60. kṛtaḥ mayā yat ajñānāt vimardaḥ ayam tvayā saha
śaraṇam samprapannāya tat kṣamasva adya śaṅkara
60. This conflict with you, which I caused out of ignorance, please forgive that, O Shankara, for I have now sought refuge (śaraṇa) in you.
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
तमुवाच महातेजाः प्रहस्य वृषभध्वजः ।
प्रगृह्य रुचिरं बाहुं क्षान्तमित्येव फल्गुनम् ॥६१॥
61. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
tamuvāca mahātejāḥ prahasya vṛṣabhadhvajaḥ ,
pragṛhya ruciraṁ bāhuṁ kṣāntamityeva phalgunam.
61. vaiśaṃpāyana uvāca tam uvāca mahātejāḥ prahasya vṛṣabhadhvajaḥ
pragṛhya ruciraṃ bāhuṃ kṣāntam iti eva phālgunam
61. Vaiśampāyana said: The immensely powerful Śiva (vṛṣabhadhvajaḥ) laughed and, taking Arjuna's (phālguna) beautiful arm, said to him, "Indeed, it is forgiven."
