जनमेजय उवाच ।
उत्तङ्कः केन तपसा संयुक्तः सुमहातपाः ।
यः शापं दातुकामोऽभूद्विष्णवे प्रभविष्णवे ॥१॥
1. janamejaya uvāca ,
uttaṅkaḥ kena tapasā saṁyuktaḥ sumahātapāḥ ,
yaḥ śāpaṁ dātukāmo'bhūdviṣṇave prabhaviṣṇave.

1. Janamejaya said: "By what (kind of) spiritual discipline (tapas) was Utṭanka, the practitioner of great austerities (tapas), endowed, such that he became desirous of giving a curse to the powerful Viṣṇu?"
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
उत्तङ्को महता युक्तस्तपसा जनमेजय ।
गुरुभक्तः स तेजस्वी नान्यं कंचिदपूजयत् ॥२॥
2. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
uttaṅko mahatā yuktastapasā janamejaya ,
gurubhaktaḥ sa tejasvī nānyaṁ kaṁcidapūjayat.

gurubhaktaḥ saḥ tejasvī na anyam kañcit apūjayat

yuktaḥ gurubhaktaḥ saḥ tejasvī anyam kañcit na apūjayat
2. Vaiśampāyana said: O Janamejaya, Uttanka, endowed with great ascetic discipline (tapas), was devoted to his guru. That radiant one worshipped no one else.
सर्वेषामृषिपुत्राणामेष चासीन्मनोरथः ।
औत्तङ्कीं गुरुवृत्तिं वै प्राप्नुयामिति भारत ॥३॥
3. sarveṣāmṛṣiputrāṇāmeṣa cāsīnmanorathaḥ ,
auttaṅkīṁ guruvṛttiṁ vai prāpnuyāmiti bhārata.
3. sarveṣām ṛṣiputrāṇām eṣaḥ ca āsīt manorathaḥ
auttaṅkīm guruvṛttim vai prāpnuyām iti bhārata
3. bhārata sarveṣām ṛṣiputrāṇām eṣaḥ manorathaḥ

3. O Bhārata, this was indeed the desire of all the sons of sages: 'May I achieve a devotion to my guru (guruvṛtti) like Uttanka's!'
गौतमस्य तु शिष्याणां बहूनां जनमेजय ।
उत्तङ्केऽभ्यधिका प्रीतिः स्नेहश्चैवाभवत्तदा ॥४॥
4. gautamasya tu śiṣyāṇāṁ bahūnāṁ janamejaya ,
uttaṅke'bhyadhikā prītiḥ snehaścaivābhavattadā.

abhyadhikā prītiḥ snehaḥ ca eva abhavat tadā
4. janamejaya gautamasya bahūnām śiṣyāṇām uttaṅke

4. O Janamejaya, among many of Gautama's disciples, a particularly great affection and fondness indeed developed towards Uttanka at that time.
स तस्य दमशौचाभ्यां विक्रान्तेन च कर्मणा ।
सम्यक्चैवोपचारेण गौतमः प्रीतिमानभूत् ॥५॥
5. sa tasya damaśaucābhyāṁ vikrāntena ca karmaṇā ,
samyakcaivopacāreṇa gautamaḥ prītimānabhūt.
5. saḥ tasya damaśaucābhyām vikrāntena ca karmaṇā
samyak ca eva upacāreṇa gautamaḥ prītimān abhūt
5. saḥ gautamaḥ tasya damaśaucābhyām ca vikrāntena

5. Gautama became delighted by his (Uttanka's) self-control (dama) and purity, by his powerful actions, and indeed by his excellent service.
अथ शिष्यसहस्राणि समनुज्ञाय गौतमः ।
उत्तङ्कं परया प्रीत्या नाभ्यनुज्ञातुमैच्छत ॥६॥
6. atha śiṣyasahasrāṇi samanujñāya gautamaḥ ,
uttaṅkaṁ parayā prītyā nābhyanujñātumaicchata.
6. atha śiṣyasahasrāṇi samanujñāya gautamaḥ
uttaṅkam parayā prītyā na abhyanujñātum aicchat
6. atha gautamaḥ śiṣyasahasrāṇi samanujñāya parayā
prītyā uttaṅkam abhyanujñātum na aicchat
6. Then, after dismissing thousands of his other disciples, Gautama, with great affection, did not wish to dismiss Utṭaṅka.
तं क्रमेण जरा तात प्रतिपेदे महामुनिम् ।
न चान्वबुध्यत तदा स मुनिर्गुरुवत्सलः ॥७॥
7. taṁ krameṇa jarā tāta pratipede mahāmunim ,
na cānvabudhyata tadā sa munirguruvatsalaḥ.
7. tam krameṇa jarā tāta pratipede mahāmunim na
ca anvabudhyata tadā saḥ muniḥ guruvatsalaḥ
7. tāta jarā krameṇa tam mahāmunim pratipede ca
tadā saḥ guruvatsalaḥ muniḥ na anvabudhyata
7. Dear son, gradually old age befell that great sage (muni). Yet, at that time, that sage, so devoted to his (guru), did not perceive it.
ततः कदाचिद्राजेन्द्र काष्ठान्यानयितुं ययौ ।
उत्तङ्कः काष्ठभारं च महान्तं समुपानयत् ॥८॥
8. tataḥ kadācidrājendra kāṣṭhānyānayituṁ yayau ,
uttaṅkaḥ kāṣṭhabhāraṁ ca mahāntaṁ samupānayat.
8. tataḥ kadācit rājendra kāṣṭhāni ānayitum yayau
uttaṅkaḥ kāṣṭhabhāram ca mahāntam samupānayat
8. tataḥ rājendra kadācit uttaṅkaḥ kāṣṭhāni ānayitum
yayau ca mahāntam kāṣṭhabhāram samupānayat
8. Then one day, O king of kings (rājendra), Utṭaṅka went to bring firewood. And he brought back a large load of wood.
स तु भाराभिभूतात्मा काष्ठभारमरिंदम ।
निष्पिपेष क्षितौ राजन्परिश्रान्तो बुभुक्षितः ॥९॥
9. sa tu bhārābhibhūtātmā kāṣṭhabhāramariṁdama ,
niṣpipeṣa kṣitau rājanpariśrānto bubhukṣitaḥ.
9. saḥ tu bhārābhibhūtātmā kāṣṭhabhāram arimdam
niṣpipeṣa kṣitau rājan pariśrāntaḥ bubhukṣitaḥ
9. tu arimdam rājan saḥ bhārābhibhūtātmā pariśrāntaḥ
bubhukṣitaḥ kāṣṭhabhāram kṣitau niṣpipeṣa
9. But he, whose inner self (ātman) was overwhelmed by the heavy load, O subduer of enemies, being completely exhausted and hungry, crushed that bundle of wood on the ground, O king.
तस्य काष्ठे विलग्नाभूज्जटा रूप्यसमप्रभा ।
ततः काष्ठैः सह तदा पपात धरणीतले ॥१०॥
10. tasya kāṣṭhe vilagnābhūjjaṭā rūpyasamaprabhā ,
tataḥ kāṣṭhaiḥ saha tadā papāta dharaṇītale.
10. tasya kāṣṭhe vilagnā abhūt jaṭā rūpyasamaprabhā
tataḥ kāṣṭhaiḥ saha tadā papāta dharaṇītale
10. tasya jaṭā rūpyasamaprabhā kāṣṭhe vilagnā abhūt

10. His matted lock, shining like silver, became entangled in the wood. Then, along with the pieces of wood, he fell to the ground.
ततः स भारनिष्पिष्टः क्षुधाविष्टश्च भार्गवः ।
दृष्ट्वा तां वयसोऽवस्थां रुरोदार्तस्वरं तदा ॥११॥
11. tataḥ sa bhāraniṣpiṣṭaḥ kṣudhāviṣṭaśca bhārgavaḥ ,
dṛṣṭvā tāṁ vayaso'vasthāṁ rurodārtasvaraṁ tadā.
11. tataḥ saḥ bhāraniṣpiṣṭaḥ kṣudhāviṣṭaḥ ca bhārgavaḥ
dṛṣṭvā tām vayasaḥ avasthām ruroda ārtasvaram tadā
11. tataḥ saḥ bhārgavaḥ bhāraniṣpiṣṭaḥ ca kṣudhāviṣṭaḥ
tām vayasaḥ avasthām dṛṣṭvā tadā ārtasvaram ruroda
11. Then that Bhargava, crushed by the burden and afflicted by hunger, seeing his advanced age, cried out in a pained voice.
ततो गुरुसुता तस्य पद्मपत्रनिभेक्षणा ।
जग्राहाश्रूणि सुश्रोणी करेण पृथुलोचना ।
पितुर्नियोगाद्धर्मज्ञा शिरसावनता तदा ॥१२॥
12. tato gurusutā tasya padmapatranibhekṣaṇā ,
jagrāhāśrūṇi suśroṇī kareṇa pṛthulocanā ,
piturniyogāddharmajñā śirasāvanatā tadā.
12. tataḥ gurusutā tasya padmapatranibhekṣaṇā
jagrāha aśrūṇi suśroṇī
kareṇa pṛthulocanā pituḥ
niyogāt dharmajñā śirasā avanatā tadā
12. tataḥ tasya gurusutā padmapatranibhekṣaṇā
suśroṇī pṛthulocanā
dharmajñā pituḥ niyogāt śirasā
avanatā tadā aśrūṇi kareṇa jagrāha
12. Then, his guru's daughter, whose eyes resembled lotus petals, the beautiful-hipped and broad-eyed woman, knowing her sacred duty (dharma) and bowing her head at her father's command, collected his tears with her hand.
तस्या निपेततुर्दग्धौ करौ तैरश्रुबिन्दुभिः ।
न हि तानश्रुपातान्वै शक्ता धारयितुं मही ॥१३॥
13. tasyā nipetaturdagdhau karau tairaśrubindubhiḥ ,
na hi tānaśrupātānvai śaktā dhārayituṁ mahī.
13. tasyāḥ nipetatūḥ dagdhau karau taiḥ aśrubindubhiḥ
na hi tān aśrupātān vai śaktā dhārayitum mahī
13. tasyāḥ dagdhau karau taiḥ aśrubindubhiḥ nipetatūḥ
hi mahī tān aśrupātān dhārayitum na vai śaktā
13. Her two burnt hands fell because of those tear-drops. Indeed, the earth (mahī) was not capable of containing those tear-falls.
गौतमस्त्वब्रवीद्विप्रमुत्तङ्कं प्रीतमानसः ।
कस्मात्तात तवाद्येह शोकोत्तरमिदं मनः ।
स स्वैरं ब्रूहि विप्रर्षे श्रोतुमिच्छामि ते वचः ॥१४॥
14. gautamastvabravīdvipramuttaṅkaṁ prītamānasaḥ ,
kasmāttāta tavādyeha śokottaramidaṁ manaḥ ,
sa svairaṁ brūhi viprarṣe śrotumicchāmi te vacaḥ.
14. gautamaḥ tu abravīt vipram uttaṅkam
prītamānasaḥ kasmāt tāta tava adya
iha śokottaram idam manaḥ saḥ svairam
brūhi viprarṣe śrotum icchāmi te vacaḥ
14. prītamānasaḥ gautamaḥ tu vipram uttaṅkam
abravīt tāta adya iha tava idam
manaḥ kasmāt śokottaram viprarṣe saḥ
svairam brūhi te vacaḥ śrotum icchāmi
14. Gautama, with a pleased mind, spoke to the brahmin Utanka: "My dear son, why is your mind so overwhelmed with sorrow here today? O brahmin sage, please speak freely; I wish to hear your words."
उत्तङ्क उवाच ।
भवद्गतेन मनसा भवत्प्रियचिकीर्षया ।
भवद्भक्तिगतेनेह भवद्भावानुगेन च ॥१५॥
15. uttaṅka uvāca ,
bhavadgatena manasā bhavatpriyacikīrṣayā ,
bhavadbhaktigateneha bhavadbhāvānugena ca.
15. uttaṅkaḥ uvāca bhavat gatena manasā bhavatpriyacikīrṣayā
iha bhavat bhakti gatena bhavat bhāva anugena ca
15. uttaṅkaḥ uvāca bhavat gatena manasā bhavatpriyacikīrṣayā
iha bhavat bhakti gatena bhavat bhāva anugena ca
15. Utanka said: "With a mind wholly devoted to you, out of a desire to do what is pleasing to you, with my mind immersed in devotion (bhakti) to you, and always following your disposition..."
जरेयं नावबुद्धा मे नाभिज्ञातं सुखं च मे ।
शतवर्षोषितं हि त्वं न मामभ्यनुजानथाः ॥१६॥
16. jareyaṁ nāvabuddhā me nābhijñātaṁ sukhaṁ ca me ,
śatavarṣoṣitaṁ hi tvaṁ na māmabhyanujānathāḥ.
16. jarā iyam na avabuddhā me na abhijñātam sukham ca
me śatavarṣoṣitam hi tvam na mām abhyanujānathāḥ
16. me iyam jarā na avabuddhā me sukham ca na abhijñātam
hi tvam śatavarṣoṣitam mām na abhyanujānathāḥ
16. “I did not perceive this old age upon myself, nor did I experience any happiness. For you, though having resided here for a hundred years, have not yet permitted me (to depart)."
भवता ह्यभ्यनुज्ञाताः शिष्याः प्रत्यवरा मया ।
उपपन्ना द्विजश्रेष्ठ शतशोऽथ सहस्रशः ॥१७॥
17. bhavatā hyabhyanujñātāḥ śiṣyāḥ pratyavarā mayā ,
upapannā dvijaśreṣṭha śataśo'tha sahasraśaḥ.
17. bhavatā hi abhyanujñātāḥ śiṣyāḥ pratyavarāḥ mayā
upapannāḥ dvijaśreṣṭha śataśaḥ atha sahasraśaḥ
17. hi dvijaśreṣṭha bhavatā mayā pratyavarāḥ śiṣyāḥ
abhyanujñātāḥ śataśaḥ atha sahasraśaḥ upapannāḥ
17. “Indeed, O best of brahmins, disciples junior to me have been permitted by you, and hundreds, even thousands, have come (to you and completed their studies)."
गौतम उवाच ।
त्वत्प्रीतियुक्तेन मया गुरुशुश्रूषया तव ।
व्यतिक्रामन्महान्कालो नावबुद्धो द्विजर्षभ ॥१८॥
18. gautama uvāca ,
tvatprītiyuktena mayā guruśuśrūṣayā tava ,
vyatikrāmanmahānkālo nāvabuddho dvijarṣabha.
18. gautama uvāca | tvatprītiyuktena mayā guruśuśrūṣayā tava
| vyatikrāman mahān kālaḥ na avabuddhaḥ dvijarṣabha
18. gautama uvāca dvijarṣabha,
tava tvatprītiyuktena guruśuśrūṣayā mayā mahān vyatikrāman kālaḥ na avabuddhaḥ.
18. Gautama said: "O best among the twice-born, a long period of time, spent by me in devotion and service to you, has passed unnoticed."
किं त्वद्य यदि ते श्रद्धा गमनं प्रति भार्गव ।
अनुज्ञां गृह्य मत्तस्त्वं गृहान्गच्छस्व मा चिरम् ॥१९॥
19. kiṁ tvadya yadi te śraddhā gamanaṁ prati bhārgava ,
anujñāṁ gṛhya mattastvaṁ gṛhāngacchasva mā ciram.
19. kim tu adya yadi te śraddhā gamanam prati bhārgava
| anujñām gṛhya mattaḥ tvam gṛhān gacchasva mā ciram
19. kim tu adya bhārgava,
yadi te gamanam prati śraddhā,
tvam mattaḥ anujñām gṛhya gṛhān gacchasva mā ciram.
19. But now, O Bhargava, if you wish to depart, then take my permission and go home without delay.
उत्तङ्क उवाच ।
गुर्वर्थं कं प्रयच्छामि ब्रूहि त्वं द्विजसत्तम ।
तमुपाकृत्य गच्छेयमनुज्ञातस्त्वया विभो ॥२०॥
20. uttaṅka uvāca ,
gurvarthaṁ kaṁ prayacchāmi brūhi tvaṁ dvijasattama ,
tamupākṛtya gaccheyamanujñātastvayā vibho.
20. uttaṅka uvāca | gurvartham kam prayacchāmi brūhi tvam
dvijasattama | tat upākṛtya gaccheyam anujñātaḥ tvayā vibho
20. uttaṅka uvāca dvijasattama vibho,
tvam brūhi gurvartham kam prayacchāmi tat upākṛtya tvayā anujñātaḥ [aham] gaccheyam.
20. Uttanka said: "O best among Brahmins, O mighty one, tell me what I should offer as a teacher's fee. Having presented that, I shall depart, having been permitted by you."
गौतम उवाच ।
दक्षिणा परितोषो वै गुरूणां सद्भिरुच्यते ।
तव ह्याचरतो ब्रह्मंस्तुष्टोऽहं वै न संशयः ॥२१॥
21. gautama uvāca ,
dakṣiṇā paritoṣo vai gurūṇāṁ sadbhirucyate ,
tava hyācarato brahmaṁstuṣṭo'haṁ vai na saṁśayaḥ.
21. gautama uvāca | dakṣiṇā paritoṣaḥ vai gurūṇām sadbhiḥ ucyate
| tava hi ācarataḥ brahman tuṣṭaḥ aham vai na saṃśayaḥ
21. gautama uvāca gurūṇām dakṣiṇā vai paritoṣaḥ sadbhiḥ ucyate brahman,
hi tava ācarataḥ aham tuṣṭaḥ vai,
na saṃśayaḥ.
21. Gautama said: "Indeed, the satisfaction of teachers is declared by the virtuous to be the proper fee (dakṣiṇā). I am certainly pleased with your conduct, O Brahmin; there is no doubt about it."
इत्थं च परितुष्टं मां विजानीहि भृगूद्वह ।
युवा षोडशवर्षो हि यदद्य भविता भवान् ॥२२॥
22. itthaṁ ca parituṣṭaṁ māṁ vijānīhi bhṛgūdvaha ,
yuvā ṣoḍaśavarṣo hi yadadya bhavitā bhavān.
22. ittham ca parituṣṭam mām vijānīhi bhṛgūdvaha
| yuvā ṣoḍaśavarṣaḥ hi yat adya bhavitā bhavān
22. bhṛgūdvaha ittham ca mām parituṣṭam vijānīhi
yat hi bhavān adya ṣoḍaśavarṣaḥ yuvā bhavitā
22. O descendant of Bhṛgu, know that I am thus completely satisfied, for today you shall become a youth of sixteen years.
ददामि पत्नीं कन्यां च स्वां ते दुहितरं द्विज ।
एतामृते हि नान्या वै त्वत्तेजोऽर्हति सेवितुम् ॥२३॥
23. dadāmi patnīṁ kanyāṁ ca svāṁ te duhitaraṁ dvija ,
etāmṛte hi nānyā vai tvattejo'rhati sevitum.
23. dadāmi patnīm kanyām ca svām te duhitaram dvija |
etām ṛte hi na anyā vai tvat-tejaḥ arhati sevitum
23. dvija,
te svām kanyām patnīm ca duhitaram dadāmi hi vai etām ṛte anyā na tvat-tejaḥ sevitum arhati
23. O twice-born (dvija), I give you my own daughter, a maiden, to be your wife. For truly, no other woman but her is worthy to attend to your splendor.
ततस्तां प्रतिजग्राह युवा भूत्वा यशस्विनीम् ।
गुरुणा चाभ्यनुज्ञातो गुरुपत्नीमथाब्रवीत् ॥२४॥
24. tatastāṁ pratijagrāha yuvā bhūtvā yaśasvinīm ,
guruṇā cābhyanujñāto gurupatnīmathābravīt.
24. tataḥ tām pratijagrāha yuvā bhūtvā yaśasvinīm |
guruṇā ca abhyanujñātaḥ guru-patnīm atha abravīt
24. tataḥ yuvā bhūtvā yaśasvinīm tām pratijagrāha ca guruṇā abhyanujñātaḥ,
atha guru-patnīm abravīt
24. Then, having transformed into a youth, he accepted that renowned maiden. And having been granted permission by his spiritual teacher (guru), he then spoke to the spiritual teacher's (guru) wife.
किं भवत्यै प्रयच्छामि गुर्वर्थं विनियुङ्क्ष्व माम् ।
प्रियं हि तव काङ्क्षामि प्राणैरपि धनैरपि ॥२५॥
25. kiṁ bhavatyai prayacchāmi gurvarthaṁ viniyuṅkṣva mām ,
priyaṁ hi tava kāṅkṣāmi prāṇairapi dhanairapi.
25. kim bhavatyai prayacchāmi guru-artham viniyuṅkṣva
mām | priyam hi tava kāṅkṣāmi prāṇaiḥ api dhanaiḥ api
25. kim bhavatyai guru-artham prayacchāmi? mām viniyuṅkṣva
hi tava priyam prāṇaiḥ api dhanaiḥ api kāṅkṣāmi
25. What shall I offer to you for the sake of the spiritual teacher (guru)? Please employ me. For truly, I desire what is pleasing to you, even at the cost of my life and wealth.
यद्दुर्लभं हि लोकेऽस्मिन्रत्नमत्यद्भुतं भवेत् ।
तदानयेयं तपसा न हि मेऽत्रास्ति संशयः ॥२६॥
26. yaddurlabhaṁ hi loke'sminratnamatyadbhutaṁ bhavet ,
tadānayeyaṁ tapasā na hi me'trāsti saṁśayaḥ.
26. yat durlabham hi loke asmin ratnam atyadbhutam bhavet
tat ānayeyam tapasā na hi me atra asti saṃśayaḥ
26. asmin loke yat hi durlabham atyadbhutam ratnam bhavet,
tat tapasā ānayeyam.
me atra saṃśayaḥ na hi asti.
26. Whatever rare and truly extraordinary jewel may exist in this world, I can surely bring that through my spiritual discipline (tapas). There is no doubt about this for me.
अहल्योवाच ।
परितुष्टास्मि ते पुत्र नित्यं भगवता सह ।
पर्याप्तये तद्भद्रं ते गच्छ तात यथेच्छकम् ॥२७॥
27. ahalyovāca ,
parituṣṭāsmi te putra nityaṁ bhagavatā saha ,
paryāptaye tadbhadraṁ te gaccha tāta yathecchakam.
27. ahalyā uvāca parituṣṭā asmi te putra nityam bhagavatā
saha paryāptaye tat bhadram te gaccha tāta yathecchakam
27. ahalyā uvāca: putra,
te nityam bhagavatā saha parituṣṭā asmi.
tat paryāptaye te bhadram (astu).
tāta,
yathecchakam gaccha.
27. Ahalya said: "O son, I am fully pleased with you, who are ever associated with the divine (Bhagavat). May good fortune be yours. Go, my dear child, as you wish."
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
उत्तङ्कस्तु महाराज पुनरेवाब्रवीद्वचः ।
आज्ञापयस्व मां मातः कर्तव्यं हि प्रियं तव ॥२८॥
28. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
uttaṅkastu mahārāja punarevābravīdvacaḥ ,
ājñāpayasva māṁ mātaḥ kartavyaṁ hi priyaṁ tava.
28. vaiśaṃpāyanaḥ uvāca uttaṅkaḥ tu mahārāja punar eva abravīt
vacaḥ ājñāpayasva mām mātaḥ kartavyam hi priyam tava
28. vaiśaṃpāyanaḥ uvāca: mahārāja,
uttaṅkaḥ tu punar eva vacaḥ abravīt: mātaḥ,
mām ājñāpayasva,
hi tava priyam kartavyam.
28. Vaiśampayana said: "O great king, Utanka then spoke again, saying: 'Command me, O mother. Indeed, I must fulfill your cherished wish.'"
अहल्योवाच ।
सौदासपत्न्या विदिते दिव्ये वै मणिकुण्डले ।
ते समानय भद्रं ते गुर्वर्थः सुकृतो भवेत् ॥२९॥
29. ahalyovāca ,
saudāsapatnyā vidite divye vai maṇikuṇḍale ,
te samānaya bhadraṁ te gurvarthaḥ sukṛto bhavet.

te samānaya bhadram te gurvarthaḥ sukṛtaḥ bhavet
29. ahalyā uvāca: saudāsapatnyāḥ vidite divye vai te maṇikuṇḍale samānaya.
te bhadram (astu).
gurvarthaḥ sukṛtaḥ bhavet.
29. Ahalya said: "Bring those two divine jeweled earrings that are known to belong to Saudasa's wife. May good fortune be with you. In this way, your guru's purpose (gurvartha) will be well fulfilled."
स तथेति प्रतिश्रुत्य जगाम जनमेजय ।
गुरुपत्नीप्रियार्थं वै ते समानयितुं तदा ॥३०॥
30. sa tatheti pratiśrutya jagāma janamejaya ,
gurupatnīpriyārthaṁ vai te samānayituṁ tadā.
30. saḥ tathā iti pratiśrutya jagāma janamejaya
gurupatnīpriyārtham vai te samānayitum tadā
30. Saying, 'So be it,' and having made that promise, he went forth, O Janamejaya, to fetch them then for the pleasure of his guru's wife.
स जगाम ततः शीघ्रमुत्तङ्को ब्राह्मणर्षभः ।
सौदासं पुरुषादं वै भिक्षितुं मणिकुण्डले ॥३१॥
31. sa jagāma tataḥ śīghramuttaṅko brāhmaṇarṣabhaḥ ,
saudāsaṁ puruṣādaṁ vai bhikṣituṁ maṇikuṇḍale.
31. saḥ jagāma tataḥ śīghram uttaṅkaḥ brāhmaṇarṣabhaḥ
saudāsam puruṣādam vai bhikṣitum maṇikuṇḍale
31. That excellent Brahmin (brāhmaṇarṣabha) Uttanka then quickly went to Soudasa, who was a man-eater, to beg for the jeweled earrings.
गौतमस्त्वब्रवीत्पत्नीमुत्तङ्को नाद्य दृश्यते ।
इति पृष्टा तमाचष्ट कुण्डलार्थं गतं तु वै ॥३२॥
32. gautamastvabravītpatnīmuttaṅko nādya dṛśyate ,
iti pṛṣṭā tamācaṣṭa kuṇḍalārthaṁ gataṁ tu vai.
32. gautamaḥ tu abravīt patnīm uttaṅkaḥ na adya dṛśyate
iti pṛṣṭā tam ācaṣṭa kuṇḍalārtham gatam tu vai
32. Gautama then said to his wife, 'Uttanka is not seen today.' When questioned this way, she indeed informed him that he had gone for the sake of the earrings.
ततः प्रोवाच पत्नीं स न ते सम्यगिदं कृतम् ।
शप्तः स पार्थिवो नूनं ब्राह्मणं तं वधिष्यति ॥३३॥
33. tataḥ provāca patnīṁ sa na te samyagidaṁ kṛtam ,
śaptaḥ sa pārthivo nūnaṁ brāhmaṇaṁ taṁ vadhiṣyati.
33. tataḥ provāca patnīm saḥ na te samyak idam kṛtam
śaptaḥ saḥ pārthivaḥ nūnam brāhmaṇam tam vadhiṣyati
33. Then he (Gautama) said to his wife, 'This was not done properly by you. That king, being cursed, will certainly kill that Brahmin.'
अहल्योवाच ।
अजानन्त्या नियुक्तः स भगवन्ब्राह्मणोऽद्य मे ।
भवत्प्रसादान्न भयं किंचित्तस्य भविष्यति ॥३४॥
34. ahalyovāca ,
ajānantyā niyuktaḥ sa bhagavanbrāhmaṇo'dya me ,
bhavatprasādānna bhayaṁ kiṁcittasya bhaviṣyati.
34. ahalyā uvāca ajānantyā niyuktaḥ sa bhagavan brāhmaṇaḥ
adya me bhavatprasādāt na bhayam kiṃcit tasya bhaviṣyati
34. ahalyā uvāca bhagavan,
adya sa brāhmaṇaḥ ajānantyā me niyuktaḥ.
bhavatprasādāt tasya kiṃcit bhayam na bhaviṣyati.
34. Ahalya said: "O revered one (Gautama), that brahmin was engaged by me today unknowingly. By your grace, no fear whatsoever will come to him."
इत्युक्तः प्राह तां पत्नीमेवमस्त्विति गौतमः ।
उत्तङ्कोऽपि वने शून्ये राजानं तं ददर्श ह ॥३५॥
35. ityuktaḥ prāha tāṁ patnīmevamastviti gautamaḥ ,
uttaṅko'pi vane śūnye rājānaṁ taṁ dadarśa ha.
35. iti uktaḥ prāha tām patnīm evam astu iti gautamaḥ
uttaṅkaḥ api vane śūnye rājānam tam dadarśa ha
35. gautamaḥ iti uktaḥ tām patnīm "evam astu" iti prāha.
uttaṅkaḥ api śūnye vane tam rājānam dadarśa ha.
35. Gautama, thus addressed, said to his wife, "So be it." Uttanka also saw that king in a deserted forest.
