वैशंपायन उवाच ।
शल्यः श्रुत्वा तु दूतानां सैन्येन महता वृतः ।
अभ्ययात्पाण्डवान्राजन्सह पुत्रैर्महारथैः ॥१॥
1. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
śalyaḥ śrutvā tu dūtānāṁ sainyena mahatā vṛtaḥ ,
abhyayātpāṇḍavānrājansaha putrairmahārathaiḥ.

1. Vaiśaṃpāyana said: "O King, Śalya, upon hearing the messengers, advanced towards the Pāṇḍavas, surrounded by a vast army and accompanied by his sons, who were mighty charioteers."
तस्य सेनानिवेशोऽभूदध्यर्धमिव योजनम् ।
तथा हि बहुलां सेनां स बिभर्ति नरर्षभः ॥२॥
2. tasya senāniveśo'bhūdadhyardhamiva yojanam ,
tathā hi bahulāṁ senāṁ sa bibharti nararṣabhaḥ.
2. tasya senāniveśaḥ abhūt adhyardham iva yojanam
tathā hi bahulām senām sa bibharti nararṣabhaḥ
2. His army encampment was approximately one and a half yojanas (a measure of distance) long. For indeed, that best among men (Śalya) maintained such a vast army.
विचित्रकवचाः शूरा विचित्रध्वजकार्मुकाः ।
विचित्राभरणाः सर्वे विचित्ररथवाहनाः ॥३॥
3. vicitrakavacāḥ śūrā vicitradhvajakārmukāḥ ,
vicitrābharaṇāḥ sarve vicitrarathavāhanāḥ.

3. All the brave warriors possessed diverse armors, various banners and bows, colorful ornaments, and unique chariots and conveyances.
स्वदेशवेषाभरणा वीराः शतसहस्रशः ।
तस्य सेनाप्रणेतारो बभूवुः क्षत्रियर्षभाः ॥४॥
4. svadeśaveṣābharaṇā vīrāḥ śatasahasraśaḥ ,
tasya senāpraṇetāro babhūvuḥ kṣatriyarṣabhāḥ.

tasya senāpraṇetāraḥ babhūvuḥ kṣatriyarṣabhāḥ
4. Hundreds of thousands of warriors, bearing the attire and ornaments of their own countries, were among the leaders of his army, as they were the foremost of Kṣatriyas.
व्यथयन्निव भूतानि कम्पयन्निव मेदिनीम् ।
शनैर्विश्रामयन्सेनां स ययौ येन पाण्डवः ॥५॥
5. vyathayanniva bhūtāni kampayanniva medinīm ,
śanairviśrāmayansenāṁ sa yayau yena pāṇḍavaḥ.

śanaiḥ viśrāmayan senām saḥ yayau yena pāṇḍavaḥ
5. He proceeded towards where the Pāṇḍava was, slowly bringing his army to a halt, as if causing distress to all beings and shaking the earth.
ततो दुर्योधनः श्रुत्वा महासेनं महारथम् ।
उपायान्तमभिद्रुत्य स्वयमानर्च भारत ॥६॥
6. tato duryodhanaḥ śrutvā mahāsenaṁ mahāratham ,
upāyāntamabhidrutya svayamānarca bhārata.
6. tataḥ duryodhanaḥ śrutvā mahāsenam mahāratham
upāyāntam abhidrutya svayam ānarca bhārata
6. Then, O Bhārata, Duryodhana, having heard that the great warrior Mahāsena was approaching, rushed towards him and personally paid him respects.
कारयामास पूजार्थं तस्य दुर्योधनः सभाः ।
रमणीयेषु देशेषु रत्नचित्राः स्वलंकृताः ॥७॥
7. kārayāmāsa pūjārthaṁ tasya duryodhanaḥ sabhāḥ ,
ramaṇīyeṣu deśeṣu ratnacitrāḥ svalaṁkṛtāḥ.
7. kārayāmāsa pūjārtham tasya duryodhanaḥ sabhāḥ
ramaṇīyeṣu deśeṣu ratnacitrāḥ svalaṅkṛtāḥ
7. For his honor, Duryodhana had halls constructed in beautiful places. These halls were adorned with various jewels and thoroughly decorated.
स ताः सभाः समासाद्य पूज्यमानो यथामरः ।
दुर्योधनस्य सचिवैर्देशे देशे यथार्हतः ।
आजगाम सभामन्यां देवावसथवर्चसम् ॥८॥
8. sa tāḥ sabhāḥ samāsādya pūjyamāno yathāmaraḥ ,
duryodhanasya sacivairdeśe deśe yathārhataḥ ,
ājagāma sabhāmanyāṁ devāvasathavarcasam.
8. saḥ tāḥ sabhāḥ samāsādya pūjyamānaḥ
yathā amaraḥ duryodhanasya
sacivaiḥ deśe deśe yathārhataḥ ājagāma
sabhām anyām devāvasathavarcasam
8. He, being honored like a god by Duryodhana's ministers in every place according to his merit, reached those halls. Then he proceeded to another hall, one that possessed the splendor of a celestial abode.
स तत्र विषयैर्युक्तः कल्याणैरतिमानुषैः ।
मेनेऽभ्यधिकमात्मानमवमेने पुरंदरम् ॥९॥
9. sa tatra viṣayairyuktaḥ kalyāṇairatimānuṣaiḥ ,
mene'bhyadhikamātmānamavamene puraṁdaram.
9. sa tatra viṣyaiḥ yuktaḥ kalyāṇaiḥ atimānuṣaiḥ
mene abhyadhikam ātmānam avamene purandaram
9. There, endowed with excellent, superhuman enjoyments, he considered himself (ātman) superior and disparaged Indra.
पप्रच्छ स ततः प्रेष्यान्प्रहृष्टः क्षत्रियर्षभः ।
युधिष्ठिरस्य पुरुषाः के नु चक्रुः सभा इमाः ।
आनीयन्तां सभाकाराः प्रदेयार्हा हि मे मताः ॥१०॥
10. papraccha sa tataḥ preṣyānprahṛṣṭaḥ kṣatriyarṣabhaḥ ,
yudhiṣṭhirasya puruṣāḥ ke nu cakruḥ sabhā imāḥ ,
ānīyantāṁ sabhākārāḥ pradeyārhā hi me matāḥ.
10. papraccha sa tataḥ preṣyān prahr̥ṣṭaḥ
kṣatriyarṣabhaḥ yudhiṣṭhirasya
puruṣāḥ ke nu cakruḥ sabhāḥ imāḥ ānīyantām
sabhākārāḥ pradeyārhāḥ hi me matāḥ
10. Then, that greatly pleased chief among kṣatriyas asked his servants: 'Who indeed built these halls of Yudhishthira? Let those who built these halls be brought, for I consider them truly worthy of gifts.'
गूढो दुर्योधनस्तत्र दर्शयामास मातुलम् ।
तं दृष्ट्वा मद्रराजस्तु ज्ञात्वा यत्नं च तस्य तम् ।
परिष्वज्याब्रवीत्प्रीत इष्टोऽर्थो गृह्यतामिति ॥११॥
11. gūḍho duryodhanastatra darśayāmāsa mātulam ,
taṁ dṛṣṭvā madrarājastu jñātvā yatnaṁ ca tasya tam ,
pariṣvajyābravītprīta iṣṭo'rtho gṛhyatāmiti.
11. gūḍhaḥ duryodhanaḥ tatra darśayāmāsa
mātulam tam dr̥ṣṭvā madrarājaḥ tu jñātvā
yatnam ca tasya tam pariṣvajya
abravīt prītaḥ iṣṭaḥ arthaḥ gr̥hyatām iti
11. Duryodhana, who was concealed there, revealed himself to his maternal uncle. When the King of Madra saw him and understood his (Duryodhana's) efforts, he embraced him, and being pleased, said, 'May your desired request be granted!'
दुर्योधन उवाच ।
सत्यवाग्भव कल्याण वरो वै मम दीयताम् ।
सर्वसेनाप्रणेता मे भवान्भवितुमर्हति ॥१२॥
12. duryodhana uvāca ,
satyavāgbhava kalyāṇa varo vai mama dīyatām ,
sarvasenāpraṇetā me bhavānbhavitumarhati.
12. duryodhanaḥ uvāca satyavāk bhava kalyāṇa varaḥ vai mama
dīyatām sarvasenāpraṇetā me bhavān bhavitum arhati
12. Duryodhana said: 'O auspicious one, be true to your word! Indeed, let a boon be granted to me. You (your honor) should become the commander of my entire army.'
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
कृतमित्यब्रवीच्छल्यः किमन्यत्क्रियतामिति ।
कृतमित्येव गान्धारिः प्रत्युवाच पुनः पुनः ॥१३॥
13. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
kṛtamityabravīcchalyaḥ kimanyatkriyatāmiti ,
kṛtamityeva gāndhāriḥ pratyuvāca punaḥ punaḥ.
13. vaiśaṃpāyana uvāca kṛtam iti abravīt śalyaḥ kim anyat
kriyatām iti kṛtam iti eva gāndhāriḥ pratyuvāca punaḥ punaḥ
13. Vaiśaṃpāyana said: Śalya exclaimed, "It is done!" and then asked, "What more should be done?" Gāndhārī, for her part, simply reiterated, "It is done!" again and again.
स तथा शल्यमामन्त्र्य पुनरायात्स्वकं पुरम् ।
शल्यो जगाम कौन्तेयानाख्यातुं कर्म तस्य तत् ॥१४॥
14. sa tathā śalyamāmantrya punarāyātsvakaṁ puram ,
śalyo jagāma kaunteyānākhyātuṁ karma tasya tat.
14. sa tathā śalyam āmantrya punaḥ āyāt svakam puram
śalyaḥ jagāma kaunteyān ākhyātum karma tasya tat
14. Having thus bid farewell to Śalya, he (Duryodhana) returned to his own city. Śalya, however, went to the sons of Kuntī (Pāṇḍavas) to inform them of that action (karma) of his.
उपप्लव्यं स गत्वा तु स्कन्धावारं प्रविश्य च ।
पाण्डवानथ तान्सर्वाञ्शल्यस्तत्र ददर्श ह ॥१५॥
15. upaplavyaṁ sa gatvā tu skandhāvāraṁ praviśya ca ,
pāṇḍavānatha tānsarvāñśalyastatra dadarśa ha.
15. upaplavyam sa gatvā tu skandhāvāram praviśya ca
pāṇḍavān atha tān sarvān śalyaḥ tatra dadarśa ha
15. Having gone to Upaplavya and entered their military camp, Śalya then saw all of those Pāṇḍavas there.
समेत्य तु महाबाहुः शल्यः पाण्डुसुतैस्तदा ।
पाद्यमर्घ्यं च गां चैव प्रत्यगृह्णाद्यथाविधि ॥१६॥
16. sametya tu mahābāhuḥ śalyaḥ pāṇḍusutaistadā ,
pādyamarghyaṁ ca gāṁ caiva pratyagṛhṇādyathāvidhi.
16. sametya tu mahābāhuḥ śalyaḥ pāṇḍusutaiḥ tadā pādyam
arghyam ca gām ca eva pratyagṛhṇāt yathāvidhi
16. Then, having met with the sons of Pāṇḍu, Śalya, the mighty-armed, indeed accepted the water for washing feet, an offering, and a cow, all according to the prescribed rules.
ततः कुशलपूर्वं स मद्रराजोऽरिसूदनः ।
प्रीत्या परमया युक्तः समाश्लिष्य युधिष्ठिरम् ॥१७॥
17. tataḥ kuśalapūrvaṁ sa madrarājo'risūdanaḥ ,
prītyā paramayā yuktaḥ samāśliṣya yudhiṣṭhiram.
17. tataḥ kuśalapūrvaṃ sa madrarājaḥ arisūdanaḥ
prītyā paramayā yuktaḥ samāśliṣya yudhiṣṭhiram
17. Then, the king of Madra, the tormentor of foes, having first inquired about his welfare, embraced Yudhishthira with great affection.
तथा भीमार्जुनौ हृष्टौ स्वस्रीयौ च यमावुभौ ।
आसने चोपविष्टस्तु शल्यः पार्थमुवाच ह ॥१८॥
18. tathā bhīmārjunau hṛṣṭau svasrīyau ca yamāvubhau ,
āsane copaviṣṭastu śalyaḥ pārthamuvāca ha.
18. tathā bhīmārjunau hṛṣṭau svasrīyau ca yamau ubhau
āsane ca upaviṣṭaḥ tu śalyaḥ pārtham uvāca ha
18. He (Shalya) similarly embraced Bhima and Arjuna, as well as his two delighted nephews, Nakula and Sahadeva. Then, having taken a seat, Shalya addressed Partha (Yudhishthira).
कुशलं राजशार्दूल कच्चित्ते कुरुनन्दन ।
अरण्यवासाद्दिष्ट्यासि विमुक्तो जयतां वर ॥१९॥
19. kuśalaṁ rājaśārdūla kaccitte kurunandana ,
araṇyavāsāddiṣṭyāsi vimukto jayatāṁ vara.
19. kuśalaṃ rājaśārdūla kaccit te kurunandana
araṇyavāsāt diṣṭyā asi vimuktaḥ jayatām vara
19. O tiger among kings, O delight of the Kurus, I hope all is well with you. It is by good fortune that you are now freed from your forest dwelling, O best of victors.
सुदुष्करं कृतं राजन्निर्जने वसता वने ।
भ्रातृभिः सह राजेन्द्र कृष्णया चानया सह ॥२०॥
20. suduṣkaraṁ kṛtaṁ rājannirjane vasatā vane ,
bhrātṛbhiḥ saha rājendra kṛṣṇayā cānayā saha.
20. suduṣkaram kṛtam rājan nirjane vasatā vane
bhrātṛbhiḥ saha rājendra kṛṣṇayā ca anayā saha
20. O king, O great king, you have accomplished a very difficult task by dwelling in a desolate forest with your brothers and with this Draupadi.
अज्ञातवासं घोरं च वसता दुष्करं कृतम् ।
दुःखमेव कुतः सौख्यं राज्यभ्रष्टस्य भारत ॥२१॥
21. ajñātavāsaṁ ghoraṁ ca vasatā duṣkaraṁ kṛtam ,
duḥkhameva kutaḥ saukhyaṁ rājyabhraṣṭasya bhārata.
21. ajñātavāsam ghoram ca vasatā duṣkaram kṛtam
duḥkham eva kutaḥ saukhyam rājyabhraṣṭasya bhārata
21. Indeed, a terrible and difficult task was accomplished by living in exile (ajñātavāsa). For one who has lost their kingdom, where is happiness? There is only sorrow, O Bhārata.
दुःखस्यैतस्य महतो धार्तराष्ट्रकृतस्य वै ।
अवाप्स्यसि सुखं राजन्हत्वा शत्रून्परंतप ॥२२॥
22. duḥkhasyaitasya mahato dhārtarāṣṭrakṛtasya vai ,
avāpsyasi sukhaṁ rājanhatvā śatrūnparaṁtapa.
22. duḥkhasya etasya mahataḥ dhārtarāṣṭrakṛtasya vai
avāpsyasi sukham rājan hatvā śatrūn paraṃtapa
22. O king, O tormentor of enemies (paraṃtapa), you will certainly achieve happiness by conquering your foes, thereby overcoming this great sorrow caused by the Dhārtarāṣṭras.
विदितं ते महाराज लोकतत्त्वं नराधिप ।
तस्माल्लोभकृतं किंचित्तव तात न विद्यते ॥२३॥
23. viditaṁ te mahārāja lokatattvaṁ narādhipa ,
tasmāllobhakṛtaṁ kiṁcittava tāta na vidyate.
23. viditam te mahārāja lokatattvam narādhipa
tasmāt lobhakṛtam kiṃcit tava tāta na vidyate
23. O great king (mahārāja), O lord of men (narādhipa), the true nature of the world (lokatattva) is known to you. Therefore, O dear one, nothing motivated by greed can be found in you.
ततोऽस्याकथयद्राजा दुर्योधनसमागमम् ।
तच्च शुश्रूषितं सर्वं वरदानं च भारत ॥२४॥
24. tato'syākathayadrājā duryodhanasamāgamam ,
tacca śuśrūṣitaṁ sarvaṁ varadānaṁ ca bhārata.
24. tataḥ asya akathayat rājā duryodhanasamāgamam
tat ca śuśrūṣitam sarvam varadānam ca bhārata
24. Then, O Bhārata, the king narrated to him the meeting with Duryodhana, and everything that was heard, as well as the granting of the boon.
युधिष्ठिर उवाच ।
सुकृतं ते कृतं राजन्प्रहृष्टेनान्तरात्मना ।
दुर्योधनस्य यद्वीर त्वया वाचा प्रतिश्रुतम् ।
एकं त्विच्छामि भद्रं ते क्रियमाणं महीपते ॥२५॥
25. yudhiṣṭhira uvāca ,
sukṛtaṁ te kṛtaṁ rājanprahṛṣṭenāntarātmanā ,
duryodhanasya yadvīra tvayā vācā pratiśrutam ,
ekaṁ tvicchāmi bhadraṁ te kriyamāṇaṁ mahīpate.
25. yudhiṣṭhira uvāca sukṛtaṃ te kṛtaṃ rājan
prahṛṣṭena antarātmanā duryodhanasya
yat vīra tvayā vācā pratiśrutam ekam tu
icchāmi bhadram te kriyamāṇam mahīpate
25. Yudhishthira said: "O King, you have performed an excellent deed with a delighted inner self (ātman) by whatever vow you made to Duryodhana, O hero. However, O protector of the earth, I wish for one thing to be done for your welfare."
भवानिह महाराज वासुदेवसमो युधि ।
कर्णार्जुनाभ्यां संप्राप्ते द्वैरथे राजसत्तम ।
कर्णस्य भवता कार्यं सारथ्यं नात्र संशयः ॥२६॥
26. bhavāniha mahārāja vāsudevasamo yudhi ,
karṇārjunābhyāṁ saṁprāpte dvairathe rājasattama ,
karṇasya bhavatā kāryaṁ sārathyaṁ nātra saṁśayaḥ.
26. bhavān iha mahārāja vāsudevasamaḥ
yudhi karṇārjunābhyām samprāpte
dvairathe rājasattama karṇasya bhavatā
kāryam sārathyam na atra saṃśayaḥ
26. O great king, you are equal to Vasudeva (Krishna) in battle. O best of kings, when a duel takes place between Karna and Arjuna, your duty is to be Karna's charioteer; there is no doubt about this.
तत्र पाल्योऽर्जुनो राजन्यदि मत्प्रियमिच्छसि ।
तेजोवधश्च ते कार्यः सौतेरस्मज्जयावहः ।
अकर्तव्यमपि ह्येतत्कर्तुमर्हसि मातुल ॥२७॥
27. tatra pālyo'rjuno rājanyadi matpriyamicchasi ,
tejovadhaśca te kāryaḥ sauterasmajjayāvahaḥ ,
akartavyamapi hyetatkartumarhasi mātula.
27. tatra pālyaḥ arjunaḥ rājan yadi
matpriyam icchasi tejovadhaḥ ca te kāryaḥ
sauteḥ asmat jayāvahaḥ akartavyam
api hi etat kartum arhasi mātula
27. O King, if you desire what is dear to me, then Arjuna is to be protected. And you must diminish the glory of the charioteer's son (Karna) – this will bring us victory. O maternal uncle, even if this is an improper act, you should perform it.
शल्य उवाच ।
शृणु पाण्डव भद्रं ते यद्ब्रवीषि दुरात्मनः ।
तेजोवधनिमित्तं मां सूतपुत्रस्य संयुगे ॥२८॥
28. śalya uvāca ,
śṛṇu pāṇḍava bhadraṁ te yadbravīṣi durātmanaḥ ,
tejovadhanimittaṁ māṁ sūtaputrasya saṁyuge.
28. śalya uvāca śṛṇu pāṇḍava bhadram te yat bravīṣi
durātmanaḥ tejovadhanimittam mām sūtaputrasya saṃyuge
28. Shalya said: "Listen, O son of Pandu, may good fortune be yours. What you, O evil-minded one, say to me concerning the diminishment of the charioteer's son's (Karna's) glory in battle..."
अहं तस्य भविष्यामि संग्रामे सारथिर्ध्रुवम् ।
वासुदेवेन हि समं नित्यं मां स हि मन्यते ॥२९॥
29. ahaṁ tasya bhaviṣyāmi saṁgrāme sārathirdhruvam ,
vāsudevena hi samaṁ nityaṁ māṁ sa hi manyate.
29. aham tasya bhaviṣyāmi saṃgrāme sārathiḥ dhruvam
vāsudevena hi samam nityaṃ mām sa hi manyate
29. I will certainly be his charioteer in battle, because he always considers me to be on par with Vāsudeva (Kṛṣṇa).
तस्याहं कुरुशार्दूल प्रतीपमहितं वचः ।
ध्रुवं संकथयिष्यामि योद्धुकामस्य संयुगे ॥३०॥
30. tasyāhaṁ kuruśārdūla pratīpamahitaṁ vacaḥ ,
dhruvaṁ saṁkathayiṣyāmi yoddhukāmasya saṁyuge.
30. tasya aham kuruśārdūla pratīpam ahitam vacaḥ
dhruvam saṃkathayiṣyāmi yoddhukāmasya saṃyuge
30. O tiger among the Kurus, I will certainly speak hostile and harmful words to him (Karṇa) who is eager for battle.
यथा स हृतदर्पश्च हृततेजाश्च पाण्डव ।
भविष्यति सुखं हन्तुं सत्यमेतद्ब्रवीमि ते ॥३१॥
31. yathā sa hṛtadarpaśca hṛtatejāśca pāṇḍava ,
bhaviṣyati sukhaṁ hantuṁ satyametadbravīmi te.
31. yathā sa hṛtadarpaḥ ca hṛtatejāḥ ca pāṇḍava
bhaviṣyati sukham hantum satyam etat bravīmi te
31. So that he (Karṇa), his pride (darpa) destroyed and his valor diminished, O Pāṇḍava, will become easy to kill. This truth I declare to you.
एवमेतत्करिष्यामि यथा तात त्वमात्थ माम् ।
यच्चान्यदपि शक्ष्यामि तत्करिष्यामि ते प्रियम् ॥३२॥
32. evametatkariṣyāmi yathā tāta tvamāttha mām ,
yaccānyadapi śakṣyāmi tatkariṣyāmi te priyam.
32. evam etat kariṣyāmi yathā tāta tvam āttha mām
yat ca anyat api śakṣyāmi tat kariṣyāmi te priyam
32. I will do this exactly as you, O dear one, have instructed me. And whatever else I am capable of, that favor I will also do for you.
यच्च दुःखं त्वया प्राप्तं द्यूते वै कृष्णया सह ।
परुषाणि च वाक्यानि सूतपुत्रकृतानि वै ॥३३॥
33. yacca duḥkhaṁ tvayā prāptaṁ dyūte vai kṛṣṇayā saha ,
paruṣāṇi ca vākyāni sūtaputrakṛtāni vai.
33. yat ca duḥkham tvayā prāptam dyūte vai kṛṣṇayā
saha paruṣāṇi ca vākyāni sūtaputrakṛtāni vai
33. And all the suffering you experienced, along with Draupadi (kṛṣṇā), in the game of dice, as well as the harsh words uttered by Karṇa (the son of Sūta) – all of that.
जटासुरात्परिक्लेशः कीचकाच्च महाद्युते ।
द्रौपद्याधिगतं सर्वं दमयन्त्या यथाशुभम् ॥३४॥
34. jaṭāsurātparikleśaḥ kīcakācca mahādyute ,
draupadyādhigataṁ sarvaṁ damayantyā yathāśubham.
34. jaṭāsurāt parikleśaḥ kīcakāt ca mahādyute
draupadyā adhigatam sarvam damayantyā yathāśubham
34. O greatly radiant one, all the troubles that Draupadi endured, such as hardship from Jaṭāsura and from Kīcaka, were just like the misfortunes experienced by Damayantī.
सर्वं दुःखमिदं वीर सुखोदर्कं भविष्यति ।
नात्र मन्युस्त्वया कार्यो विधिर्हि बलवत्तरः ॥३५॥
35. sarvaṁ duḥkhamidaṁ vīra sukhodarkaṁ bhaviṣyati ,
nātra manyustvayā kāryo vidhirhi balavattaraḥ.
35. sarvam duḥkham idam vīra sukhaudarkam bhaviṣyati
na atra manyuḥ tvayā kāryaḥ vidhiḥ hi balavattaraḥ
35. O hero, all this suffering will surely lead to a happy outcome. You should not harbor anger about this, for destiny (vidhi) is indeed more powerful.
दुःखानि हि महात्मानः प्राप्नुवन्ति युधिष्ठिर ।
देवैरपि हि दुःखानि प्राप्तानि जगतीपते ॥३६॥
36. duḥkhāni hi mahātmānaḥ prāpnuvanti yudhiṣṭhira ,
devairapi hi duḥkhāni prāptāni jagatīpate.

devaiḥ api hi duḥkhāni prāptāni jagatīpate
36. Indeed, O Yudhiṣṭhira, even great souls (mahātman) experience suffering. And O lord of the earth, even the gods have certainly experienced misfortunes.
इन्द्रेण श्रूयते राजन्सभार्येण महात्मना ।
अनुभूतं महद्दुःखं देवराजेन भारत ॥३७॥
37. indreṇa śrūyate rājansabhāryeṇa mahātmanā ,
anubhūtaṁ mahadduḥkhaṁ devarājena bhārata.

37. O King, O descendant of Bharata, it is heard that great sorrow was experienced by the great-souled Indra, the king of the gods, along with his wife.
