वैशंपायन उवाच ।
एवमुक्तस्तु विमनास्तिर्यग्दृष्टिरधोमुखः ।
संहत्य च भ्रुवोर्मध्यं न किंचिद्व्याजहार ह ॥१॥
1. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
evamuktastu vimanāstiryagdṛṣṭiradhomukhaḥ ,
saṁhatya ca bhruvormadhyaṁ na kiṁcidvyājahāra ha.

1. Vaiśampāyana said, "Having been addressed in this manner, he was disheartened. With his gaze averted, his face downcast, and his eyebrows furrowed, he did not utter a single word."
तं वै विमनसं दृष्ट्वा संप्रेक्ष्यान्योन्यमन्तिकात् ।
पुनरेवोत्तरं वाक्यमुक्तवन्तौ नरर्षभौ ॥२॥
2. taṁ vai vimanasaṁ dṛṣṭvā saṁprekṣyānyonyamantikāt ,
punarevottaraṁ vākyamuktavantau nararṣabhau.
2. tam vai vimanasaṃ dṛṣṭvā saṃprekṣya anyonyam antikāt
| punar eva uttaram vākyam uktavantau nara-ṛṣabhau

2. Seeing him indeed disheartened, and having exchanged glances from nearby, the two best among men (Bhīṣma and Droṇa) again spoke the following words.
भीष्म उवाच ।
शुश्रूषुमनसूयं च ब्रह्मण्यं सत्यसंगरम् ।
प्रतियोत्स्यामहे पार्थमतो दुःखतरं नु किम् ॥३॥
3. bhīṣma uvāca ,
śuśrūṣumanasūyaṁ ca brahmaṇyaṁ satyasaṁgaram ,
pratiyotsyāmahe pārthamato duḥkhataraṁ nu kim.

3. Bhīṣma said, "What indeed could be more sorrowful than having to fight against Pārtha, who is devoted, free from malice, respectful of sacred knowledge (brāhmaṇya), and truthful in his commitments?"
द्रोण उवाच ।
अश्वत्थाम्नि यथा पुत्रे भूयो मम धनंजये ।
बहुमानः परो राजन्संनतिश्च कपिध्वजे ॥४॥
4. droṇa uvāca ,
aśvatthāmni yathā putre bhūyo mama dhanaṁjaye ,
bahumānaḥ paro rājansaṁnatiśca kapidhvaje.

4. Droṇa said, "O King, just as I have profound affection for my son Aśvatthāman, so too do I hold the highest esteem and reverence for Dhanañjaya, the one with the monkey banner."
तं चेत्पुत्रात्प्रियतरं प्रतियोत्स्ये धनंजयम् ।
क्षत्रधर्ममनुष्ठाय धिगस्तु क्षत्रजीविकाम् ॥५॥
5. taṁ cetputrātpriyataraṁ pratiyotsye dhanaṁjayam ,
kṣatradharmamanuṣṭhāya dhigastu kṣatrajīvikām.
5. tam cet putrāt priyataraṃ pratiyotsye dhanaṃjayam
kṣatradharmam anuṣṭhāya dhik astu kṣatrajīvikām
5. cet putrāt priyataraṃ tam dhanaṃjayam pratiyotsye,
(tarhi) kṣatradharmam anuṣṭhāya kṣatrajīvikām dhik astu
5. If I, having upheld the warrior's code (kṣatradharma), fight against Arjuna, who is dearer to me than a son, then shame be upon this warrior's livelihood!
यस्य लोके समो नास्ति कश्चिदन्यो धनुर्धरः ।
मत्प्रसादात्स बीभत्सुः श्रेयानन्यैर्धनुर्धरैः ॥६॥
6. yasya loke samo nāsti kaścidanyo dhanurdharaḥ ,
matprasādātsa bībhatsuḥ śreyānanyairdhanurdharaiḥ.
6. yasya loke samaḥ na asti kaścit anyaḥ dhanurdharaḥ
matprasādāt saḥ bībhatsuḥ śreyān anyaiḥ dhanurdharaiḥ
6. yasya loke samaḥ anyaḥ kaścit dhanurdharaḥ na asti;
matprasādāt saḥ bībhatsuḥ anyaiḥ dhanurdharaiḥ śreyān (bhavati)
6. There is no other archer in the world who is his equal. By my grace, that Bibhatsu (Arjuna) is superior to all other archers.
मित्रध्रुग्दुष्टभावश्च नास्तिकोऽथानृजुः शठः ।
न सत्सु लभते पूजां यज्ञे मूर्ख इवागतः ॥७॥
7. mitradhrugduṣṭabhāvaśca nāstiko'thānṛjuḥ śaṭhaḥ ,
na satsu labhate pūjāṁ yajñe mūrkha ivāgataḥ.
7. mitradhruk duṣṭabhāvaḥ ca nāstikaḥ atha anṛjuḥ śaṭhaḥ
na satsu labhate pūjām yajñe mūrkhaḥ iva āgataḥ
7. mitradhruk,
duṣṭabhāvaḥ ca,
nāstikaḥ atha anṛjuḥ śaṭhaḥ,
(saḥ) satsu pūjām na labhate,
yajñe āgataḥ mūrkhaḥ iva (na labhate)
7. A betrayer of friends, an ill-intentioned person, an atheist, and a dishonest, cunning individual does not receive honor among the virtuous, just as a fool attending a Vedic ritual (yajña) would not.
वार्यमाणोऽपि पापेभ्यः पापात्मा पापमिच्छति ।
चोद्यमानोऽपि पापेन शुभात्मा शुभमिच्छति ॥८॥
8. vāryamāṇo'pi pāpebhyaḥ pāpātmā pāpamicchati ,
codyamāno'pi pāpena śubhātmā śubhamicchati.
8. vāryamāṇaḥ api pāpebhyaḥ pāpātmā pāpam icchati
codyamāṇaḥ api pāpena śubhātmā śubham icchati
8. pāpātmā pāpebhyaḥ vāryamāṇaḥ api pāpam icchati.
śubhātmā pāpena codyamāṇaḥ api śubham icchati.
8. Even when being restrained from sinful acts, a wicked soul (pāpātmā) desires only evil. Similarly, even when being urged towards evil, a virtuous soul (śubhātmā) desires only good.
मिथ्योपचरिता ह्येते वर्तमाना ह्यनु प्रिये ।
अहितत्वाय कल्पन्ते दोषा भरतसत्तम ॥९॥
9. mithyopacaritā hyete vartamānā hyanu priye ,
ahitatvāya kalpante doṣā bharatasattama.
9. mithyā-upacaritāḥ hi ete vartamānāḥ hi anu
priye ahitatvāya kalpante doṣāḥ bharatasattama
9. bharatasattama ete doṣāḥ hi mithyā-upacaritāḥ
hi anu priye vartamānāḥ ahitatvāya kalpante
9. O best of Bharatas, these faults, which are mistakenly indulged in according to what is pleasing (priye), indeed lead to harm.
त्वमुक्तः कुरुवृद्धेन मया च विदुरेण च ।
वासुदेवेन च तथा श्रेयो नैवाभिपद्यसे ॥१०॥
10. tvamuktaḥ kuruvṛddhena mayā ca vidureṇa ca ,
vāsudevena ca tathā śreyo naivābhipadyase.
10. tvam uktaḥ kuruvṛddhena mayā ca vidureṇa ca
vāsudevena ca tathā śreyaḥ na eva abhipadyase
10. tvam kuruvṛddhena mayā ca vidureṇa ca tathā vāsudevena ca uktaḥ,
(tathāpi tvam) śreyaḥ na eva abhipadyase
10. You were advised by the elder of the Kurus, by me, by Vidura, and similarly by Vāsudeva; yet you do not attain what is good (śreyas).
अस्ति मे बलमित्येव सहसा त्वं तितीर्षसि ।
सग्राहनक्रमकरं गङ्गावेगमिवोष्णगे ॥११॥
11. asti me balamityeva sahasā tvaṁ titīrṣasi ,
sagrāhanakramakaraṁ gaṅgāvegamivoṣṇage.
11. asti me balam iti eva sahasā tvam titīrṣasi
sa-grāha-nakra-makaram gaṅgā-vegam iva uṣṇage
11. tvam "me balam asti" iti eva sahasā
sa-grāha-nakra-makaram uṣṇage gaṅgā-vegam iva titīrṣasi
11. Thinking 'I have strength,' you rashly desire to cross, like (one would cross) the swift current of the Gaṅgā in summer, filled with sharks, crocodiles, and makaras.
वास एव यथा हि त्वं प्रावृण्वानोऽद्य मन्यसे ।
स्रजं त्यक्तामिव प्राप्य लोभाद्यौधिष्ठिरीं श्रियम् ॥१२॥
12. vāsa eva yathā hi tvaṁ prāvṛṇvāno'dya manyase ,
srajaṁ tyaktāmiva prāpya lobhādyaudhiṣṭhirīṁ śriyam.
12. vāsaḥ eva yathā hi tvam prāvṛṇvānaḥ adya manyase
srajam tyaktām iva prāpya lobhāt yāudhiṣṭhirīm śriyam
12. yathā hi tvam adya tyaktām srajam iva prāpya lobhāt
yāudhiṣṭhirīm śriyam vāsaḥ eva prāvṛṇvānaḥ manyase
12. Just as you now consider Yudhiṣṭhira's prosperity, which you obtained out of greed, as merely a garment you are putting on, like a discarded garland.
द्रौपदीसहितं पार्थं सायुधैर्भ्रातृभिर्वृतम् ।
वनस्थमपि राज्यस्थः पाण्डवं कोऽतिजीवति ॥१३॥
13. draupadīsahitaṁ pārthaṁ sāyudhairbhrātṛbhirvṛtam ,
vanasthamapi rājyasthaḥ pāṇḍavaṁ ko'tijīvati.
13. draupadī-sahitam pārtham sāyudhaiḥ bhrātṛbhiḥ vṛtam
vanastham api rājyasthaḥ pāṇḍavam kaḥ ati-jīvati
13. rājyasthaḥ kaḥ draupadī-sahitam sāyudhaiḥ bhrātṛbhiḥ
vṛtam vanastham api pārtham pāṇḍavam ati-jīvati
13. Who, while residing in a kingdom, can hope to survive against the Pāṇḍava (Arjuna), who, even when dwelling in the forest, is accompanied by Draupadī and surrounded by his armed brothers?
निदेशे यस्य राजानः सर्वे तिष्ठन्ति किंकराः ।
तमैलविलमासाद्य धर्मराजो व्यराजत ॥१४॥
14. nideśe yasya rājānaḥ sarve tiṣṭhanti kiṁkarāḥ ,
tamailavilamāsādya dharmarājo vyarājata.
14. nideśe yasya rājānaḥ sarve tiṣṭhanti kiṅkarāḥ
tam ailavilam āsādya dharmarājaḥ vyarājata
14. yasya nideśe sarve rājānaḥ kiṅkarāḥ tiṣṭhanti,
tam ailavilam āsādya,
dharmarājaḥ vyarājata
14. Dharmarāja (Yudhiṣṭhira) shone brightly upon reaching that Ailavila (Kubera), under whose command all kings stand as servants.
कुबेरसदनं प्राप्य ततो रत्नान्यवाप्य च ।
स्फीतमाक्रम्य ते राष्ट्रं राज्यमिच्छन्ति पाण्डवाः ॥१५॥
15. kuberasadanaṁ prāpya tato ratnānyavāpya ca ,
sphītamākramya te rāṣṭraṁ rājyamicchanti pāṇḍavāḥ.
15. kuberasadanam prāpya tataḥ ratnāni avāpya ca
sphītam ākramya te rāṣṭram rājyam icchanti pāṇḍavāḥ
15. (he) kuberasadanam prāpya tataḥ ratnāni ca avāpya,
(sphītam rāṣṭram) ākramya,
te pāṇḍavāḥ rājyam icchanti
15. Having reached Kubera's abode and obtained gems from there, the Pāṇḍavas, by seizing that prosperous nation, now desire sovereignty (rājya).
दत्तं हुतमधीतं च ब्राह्मणास्तर्पिता धनैः ।
आवयोर्गतमायुश्च कृतकृत्यौ च विद्धि नौ ॥१६॥
16. dattaṁ hutamadhītaṁ ca brāhmaṇāstarpitā dhanaiḥ ,
āvayorgatamāyuśca kṛtakṛtyau ca viddhi nau.
16. dattam hutam adhītam ca brāhmaṇāḥ tarpitāḥ dhanaiḥ
āvayoḥ gatam āyuḥ ca kṛtakṛtyau ca viddhi nau
16. (he) dattam hutam adhītam ca (kṛtam),
dhanaiḥ brāhmaṇāḥ tarpitāḥ ca (iti),
āvayoḥ āyuḥ gatam ca (iti),
nau kṛtakṛtyau ca viddhi
16. Know that both of us have performed sacrifices (huta), given charity (datta), studied (adhīta), and pleased Brahmins with wealth; thus, our lives have passed, and we have accomplished our duties.
त्वं तु हित्वा सुखं राज्यं मित्राणि च धनानि च ।
विग्रहं पाण्डवैः कृत्वा महद्व्यसनमाप्स्यसि ॥१७॥
17. tvaṁ tu hitvā sukhaṁ rājyaṁ mitrāṇi ca dhanāni ca ,
vigrahaṁ pāṇḍavaiḥ kṛtvā mahadvyasanamāpsyasi.
17. tvam tu hitvā sukham rājyam mitrāṇi ca dhanāni ca
vigraham pāṇḍavaiḥ kṛtvā mahat vyasanam āpsyasi
17. tvam tu sukham rājyam mitrāṇi ca dhanāni ca hitvā
pāṇḍavaiḥ vigraham kṛtvā mahat vyasanam āpsyasi
17. Indeed, by giving up happiness, your kingdom, friends, and wealth, and by initiating a conflict with the Pāṇḍavas, you will certainly meet with a great calamity.
द्रौपदी यस्य चाशास्ते विजयं सत्यवादिनी ।
तपोघोरव्रता देवी न त्वं जेष्यसि पाण्डवम् ॥१८॥
18. draupadī yasya cāśāste vijayaṁ satyavādinī ,
tapoghoravratā devī na tvaṁ jeṣyasi pāṇḍavam.
18. draupadī yasya ca āśāste vijayam satyavādinī
tapaḥ ghoravratā devī na tvam jeṣyasi pāṇḍavam
18. yasya satyavādinī tapoghoravratā devī draupadī ca vijayam āśāste,
tvam na pāṇḍavam jeṣyasi
18. And Draupadī, the truth-speaking, revered lady whose severe vow is asceticism (tapas), wishes for his victory. You will not conquer that Pāṇḍava.
मन्त्री जनार्दनो यस्य भ्राता यस्य धनंजयः ।
सर्वशस्त्रभृतां श्रेष्ठं कथं जेष्यसि पाण्डवम् ॥१९॥
19. mantrī janārdano yasya bhrātā yasya dhanaṁjayaḥ ,
sarvaśastrabhṛtāṁ śreṣṭhaṁ kathaṁ jeṣyasi pāṇḍavam.
19. mantrī janārdanaḥ yasya bhrātā yasya dhanaṃjayaḥ
sarvaśastrabṛtām śreṣṭham katham jeṣyasi pāṇḍavam
19. yasya mantrī janārdanaḥ,
yasya bhrātā dhanaṃjayaḥ,
sarvaśastrabṛtām śreṣṭham tam pāṇḍavam katham tvam jeṣyasi?
19. How will you conquer that Pāṇḍava whose minister is Janārdana (Krishna), whose brother is Dhanañjaya (Arjuna), and who is the best among all weapon-wielders?
सहाया ब्राह्मणा यस्य धृतिमन्तो जितेन्द्रियाः ।
तमुग्रतपसं वीरं कथं जेष्यसि पाण्डवम् ॥२०॥
20. sahāyā brāhmaṇā yasya dhṛtimanto jitendriyāḥ ,
tamugratapasaṁ vīraṁ kathaṁ jeṣyasi pāṇḍavam.
20. sahāyāḥ brāhmaṇāḥ yasya dhṛtimantaḥ jitendriyāḥ
tam ugratapasam vīram katham jeṣyasi pāṇḍavam
20. yasya dhṛtimantaḥ jitendriyāḥ brāhmaṇāḥ sahāyāḥ,
tam ugratapasam vīram pāṇḍavam katham tvam jeṣyasi?
20. How will you conquer that heroic Pāṇḍava, whose helpers are steadfast Brahmins who have subdued their senses (jitendriyāḥ), and who himself observes severe asceticism (tapas)?
पुनरुक्तं च वक्ष्यामि यत्कार्यं भूतिमिच्छता ।
सुहृदा मज्जमानेषु सुहृत्सु व्यसनार्णवे ॥२१॥
21. punaruktaṁ ca vakṣyāmi yatkāryaṁ bhūtimicchatā ,
suhṛdā majjamāneṣu suhṛtsu vyasanārṇave.
21. punaruktaṃ ca vakṣyāmi yat kāryaṃ bhūtim
icchatā suhṛdā majjamāneṣu suhṛtsu vyasanārṇave
21. bhūtim icchatā suhṛdā vyasanārṇave majjamāneṣu
suhṛtsu yat kāryaṃ ca punaruktaṃ vakṣyāmi
21. And I will repeat what should be done by a friend desiring prosperity, regarding friends who are sinking in an ocean of calamity.
अलं युद्धेन तैर्वीरैः शाम्य त्वं कुरुवृद्धये ।
मा गमः ससुतामात्यः सबलश्च पराभवम् ॥२२॥
22. alaṁ yuddhena tairvīraiḥ śāmya tvaṁ kuruvṛddhaye ,
mā gamaḥ sasutāmātyaḥ sabalaśca parābhavam.
22. alaṃ yuddhena taiḥ vīraiḥ śāmya tvaṃ kuruvṛddhaye
mā gamaḥ sasutāmātyaḥ sabalaḥ ca parābhavam
22. tvaṃ taiḥ vīraiḥ yuddhena alam.
kuruvṛddhaye śāmya.
sasutāmātyaḥ sabalaḥ ca parābhavam mā gamaḥ.
22. Enough with fighting against those heroes; you should cease, for the prosperity of the Kurus. Do not go towards defeat, accompanied by your sons, ministers, and army.
