तक्षक उवाच ।
दष्टं यदि मयेह त्वं शक्तः किंचिच्चिकित्सितुम् ।
ततो वृक्षं मया दष्टमिमं जीवय काश्यप ॥१॥
1. takṣaka uvāca ,
daṣṭaṁ yadi mayeha tvaṁ śaktaḥ kiṁciccikitsitum ,
tato vṛkṣaṁ mayā daṣṭamimaṁ jīvaya kāśyapa.

cikitsitum tataḥ vṛkṣam mayā daṣṭam imam jīvaya kāśyapa
1. Takṣaka said: "If you are capable of curing anything bitten by me here, then, O Kaśyapa, revive this tree that I have bitten."
परं मन्त्रबलं यत्ते तद्दर्शय यतस्व च ।
न्यग्रोधमेनं धक्ष्यामि पश्यतस्ते द्विजोत्तम ॥२॥
2. paraṁ mantrabalaṁ yatte taddarśaya yatasva ca ,
nyagrodhamenaṁ dhakṣyāmi paśyataste dvijottama.
2. param mantrabalam yat te tat darśaya yatasva ca
nyagrodham enam dhakṣyāmi paśyataḥ te dvijottama
2. Show that supreme power of your mantras, and strive! O best of Brahmins, I shall burn this banyan tree while you watch.
काश्यप उवाच ।
दश नागेन्द्र वृक्षं त्वं यमेनमभिमन्यसे ।
अहमेनं त्वया दष्टं जीवयिष्ये भुजंगम ॥३॥
3. kāśyapa uvāca ,
daśa nāgendra vṛkṣaṁ tvaṁ yamenamabhimanyase ,
ahamenaṁ tvayā daṣṭaṁ jīvayiṣye bhujaṁgama.
3. kāśyapaḥ uvāca daśa nāgendra vṛkṣam tvam yam enam
abhimanyase aham enam tvayā daṣṭam jīvayiṣye bhujaṅgama
3. Kaśyapa said: "O king of serpents, bite this tree that you intend (to destroy). O serpent, I will revive this one, even after it is bitten by you."
सूत उवाच ।
एवमुक्तः स नागेन्द्रः काश्यपेन महात्मना ।
अदशद्वृक्षमभ्येत्य न्यग्रोधं पन्नगोत्तमः ॥४॥
4. sūta uvāca ,
evamuktaḥ sa nāgendraḥ kāśyapena mahātmanā ,
adaśadvṛkṣamabhyetya nyagrodhaṁ pannagottamaḥ.
4. sūtaḥ uvāca evam uktaḥ saḥ nāgendraḥ kāśyapena mahātmanā
adaśat vṛkṣam abhyetya nyagrodham pannagottamaḥ
4. Sūta said: Thus spoken to by the magnanimous Kaśyapa, that king of serpents, the foremost among serpents, approached the banyan tree and bit it.
स वृक्षस्तेन दष्टः सन्सद्य एव महाद्युते ।
आशीविषविषोपेतः प्रजज्वाल समन्ततः ॥५॥
5. sa vṛkṣastena daṣṭaḥ sansadya eva mahādyute ,
āśīviṣaviṣopetaḥ prajajvāla samantataḥ.
5. saḥ vṛkṣaḥ tena daṣṭaḥ san sadya eva mahādyute
āśīviṣaviṣopetaḥ prajajvāla samantataḥ
5. O king (greatly radiant one), that tree, having been bitten by him, was immediately imbued with the poison of a venomous snake and blazed up all around.
तं दग्ध्वा स नगं नागः काश्यपं पुनरब्रवीत् ।
कुरु यत्नं द्विजश्रेष्ठ जीवयैनं वनस्पतिम् ॥६॥
6. taṁ dagdhvā sa nagaṁ nāgaḥ kāśyapaṁ punarabravīt ,
kuru yatnaṁ dvijaśreṣṭha jīvayainaṁ vanaspatim.
6. tam dagdhvā saḥ nagam nāgaḥ kāśyapam punaḥ abravīt
| kuru yatnam dvijaśreṣṭha jīvaya enam vanaspatim
6. Having burned that tree, the Nāga (Takṣaka) again said to Kāśyapa, "O best among the twice-born, exert yourself; revive this tree!"
भस्मीभूतं ततो वृक्षं पन्नगेन्द्रस्य तेजसा ।
भस्म सर्वं समाहृत्य काश्यपो वाक्यमब्रवीत् ॥७॥
7. bhasmībhūtaṁ tato vṛkṣaṁ pannagendrasya tejasā ,
bhasma sarvaṁ samāhṛtya kāśyapo vākyamabravīt.
7. bhasmībhūtam tataḥ vṛkṣam pannagendrasya tejasā
| bhasma sarvam samāhṛtya kāśyapaḥ vākyam abravīt
7. Then, having gathered all the ashes of the tree, which had been turned to ash by the power of the king of serpents (Takṣaka), Kāśyapa spoke these words.
विद्याबलं पन्नगेन्द्र पश्य मेऽस्मिन्वनस्पतौ ।
अहं संजीवयाम्येनं पश्यतस्ते भुजंगम ॥८॥
8. vidyābalaṁ pannagendra paśya me'sminvanaspatau ,
ahaṁ saṁjīvayāmyenaṁ paśyataste bhujaṁgama.
8. vidyābalam pannagendra paśya me asmin vanaspatou
| aham sañjīvayāmi enam paśyataḥ te bhujaṅgama
8. O king of serpents, behold my power of knowledge in this tree! I will revive this (tree) while you watch, O serpent.
ततः स भगवान्विद्वान्काश्यपो द्विजसत्तमः ।
भस्मराशीकृतं वृक्षं विद्यया समजीवयत् ॥९॥
9. tataḥ sa bhagavānvidvānkāśyapo dvijasattamaḥ ,
bhasmarāśīkṛtaṁ vṛkṣaṁ vidyayā samajīvayat.
9. tataḥ saḥ bhagavān vidvān kāśyapaḥ dvijasattamaḥ
| bhasmarāśīkṛtam vṛkṣam vidyayā samajīvayat
9. Then that venerable, learned Kāśyapa, the foremost among the twice-born, revived the tree, which had been reduced to a heap of ashes, through his mystical knowledge.
अङ्कुरं तं स कृतवांस्ततः पर्णद्वयान्वितम् ।
पलाशिनं शाखिनं च तथा विटपिनं पुनः ॥१०॥
10. aṅkuraṁ taṁ sa kṛtavāṁstataḥ parṇadvayānvitam ,
palāśinaṁ śākhinaṁ ca tathā viṭapinaṁ punaḥ.
10. aṅkuram tam saḥ kṛtavān tataḥ parṇadvayānvitam
| palāśinam śākhinam ca tathā viṭapinam punaḥ
10. Then he made that (tree) become a sprout, then one endowed with two leaves, then leafy, and furthermore, one with branches and young shoots.
तं दृष्ट्वा जीवितं वृक्षं काश्यपेन महात्मना ।
उवाच तक्षको ब्रह्मन्नेतदत्यद्भुतं त्वयि ॥११॥
11. taṁ dṛṣṭvā jīvitaṁ vṛkṣaṁ kāśyapena mahātmanā ,
uvāca takṣako brahmannetadatyadbhutaṁ tvayi.
11. tam dṛṣṭvā jīvitam vṛkṣam kāśyapena mahātmanā
uvāca takṣakaḥ brahman etat atyadbhutam tvayi
11. Upon seeing that tree revived by the great-souled Kaśyapa, Takṣaka said, 'O Brahmin, this power in you is truly astonishing!'
विप्रेन्द्र यद्विषं हन्या मम वा मद्विधस्य वा ।
कं त्वमर्थमभिप्रेप्सुर्यासि तत्र तपोधन ॥१२॥
12. viprendra yadviṣaṁ hanyā mama vā madvidhasya vā ,
kaṁ tvamarthamabhiprepsuryāsi tatra tapodhana.
12. viprendra yat viṣam hanyāt mama vā madvidhasya vā
kam tvam artham abhiprepsuḥ yāsi tatra tapodhana
12. O chief of Brahmins, whose poison could even kill me or one like me - O ascetic, with what purpose in mind are you going there, desiring to achieve what?
यत्तेऽभिलषितं प्राप्तुं फलं तस्मान्नृपोत्तमात् ।
अहमेव प्रदास्यामि तत्ते यद्यपि दुर्लभम् ॥१३॥
13. yatte'bhilaṣitaṁ prāptuṁ phalaṁ tasmānnṛpottamāt ,
ahameva pradāsyāmi tatte yadyapi durlabham.
13. yat te abhilaṣitam prāptum phalam tasmāt nṛpottamāt
aham eva pradāsyāmi tat te yadyapi durlabham
13. Whatever desired reward you wish to obtain from that excellent king, I myself will give that to you, even if it is difficult to acquire.
विप्रशापाभिभूते च क्षीणायुषि नराधिपे ।
घटमानस्य ते विप्र सिद्धिः संशयिता भवेत् ॥१४॥
14. vipraśāpābhibhūte ca kṣīṇāyuṣi narādhipe ,
ghaṭamānasya te vipra siddhiḥ saṁśayitā bhavet.
14. vipraśāpābhibhūte ca kṣīṇāyuṣi narādhipe
ghaṭamānasya te vipra siddhiḥ saṃśayitā bhavet
14. And, O Brahmin, if the king is already afflicted by a Brahmin's curse and his lifespan is diminished, then your efforts to go there will likely lead to doubtful success.
ततो यशः प्रदीप्तं ते त्रिषु लोकेषु विश्रुतम् ।
विरश्मिरिव घर्मांशुरन्तर्धानमितो व्रजेत् ॥१५॥
15. tato yaśaḥ pradīptaṁ te triṣu lokeṣu viśrutam ,
viraśmiriva gharmāṁśurantardhānamito vrajet.
15. tataḥ yaśaḥ pradīptam te triṣu lokeṣu viśrutam
viraśmiḥ iva gharmāṃśuḥ antardhānam itaḥ vrajet
15. Then, your fame, which is brilliant and renowned throughout the three worlds, would disappear from here just like a sun without its rays.
काश्यप उवाच ।
धनार्थी याम्यहं तत्र तन्मे दित्स भुजंगम ।
ततोऽहं विनिवर्तिष्ये गृहायोरगसत्तम ॥१६॥
16. kāśyapa uvāca ,
dhanārthī yāmyahaṁ tatra tanme ditsa bhujaṁgama ,
tato'haṁ vinivartiṣye gṛhāyoragasattama.
16. kāśyapaḥ uvāca dhanārthī yāmi ahaṃ tatra tat me ditsa
bhujaṅgama tataḥ ahaṃ vinivartiṣye gṛhāya uragasattama
16. Kaśyapa said: "O serpent, I am going there for wealth. Please give that to me. Then, O best of serpents, I will return home."
तक्षक उवाच ।
यावद्धनं प्रार्थयसे तस्माद्राज्ञस्ततोऽधिकम् ।
अहं तेऽद्य प्रदास्यामि निवर्तस्व द्विजोत्तम ॥१७॥
17. takṣaka uvāca ,
yāvaddhanaṁ prārthayase tasmādrājñastato'dhikam ,
ahaṁ te'dya pradāsyāmi nivartasva dvijottama.
17. takṣakaḥ uvāca yāvat dhanaṃ prārthayase tasmāt rājñaḥ
tataḥ adhikam ahaṃ te adya pradāsyāmi nivartasva dvijottama
17. Takṣaka said: "Whatever wealth you seek from that king, I will give you even more than that today. Return, O best of the twice-born!"
सूत उवाच ।
तक्षकस्य वचः श्रुत्वा काश्यपो द्विजसत्तमः ।
प्रदध्यौ सुमहातेजा राजानं प्रति बुद्धिमान् ॥१८॥
18. sūta uvāca ,
takṣakasya vacaḥ śrutvā kāśyapo dvijasattamaḥ ,
pradadhyau sumahātejā rājānaṁ prati buddhimān.
18. sūtaḥ uvāca takṣakasya vacaḥ śrutvā kāśyapaḥ dvijasattamaḥ
pradadhyau sumahātejāḥ rājānaṃ prati buddhimān
18. Sūta said: "Having heard Takṣaka's words, the wise and exceedingly radiant Kaśyapa, who was the best of the twice-born, reflected upon the king."
दिव्यज्ञानः स तेजस्वी ज्ञात्वा तं नृपतिं तदा ।
क्षीणायुषं पाण्डवेयमपावर्तत काश्यपः ।
लब्ध्वा वित्तं मुनिवरस्तक्षकाद्यावदीप्सितम् ॥१९॥
19. divyajñānaḥ sa tejasvī jñātvā taṁ nṛpatiṁ tadā ,
kṣīṇāyuṣaṁ pāṇḍaveyamapāvartata kāśyapaḥ ,
labdhvā vittaṁ munivarastakṣakādyāvadīpsitam.
19. divyajñānaḥ saḥ tejasvī jñātvā taṃ
nṛpatiṃ tadā kṣīṇāyuṣaṃ pāṇḍaveyaṃ
apāvartata kāśyapaḥ labdhvā vittaṃ
munivaraḥ takṣakāt yāvat īpsitam
19. Then, Kaśyapa, endowed with divine knowledge and great radiance, understood that the Pāṇḍava king (Parīkṣit) had a diminished lifespan. The best of sages, having received from Takṣaka as much wealth as he desired, then turned back.
निवृत्ते काश्यपे तस्मिन्समयेन महात्मनि ।
जगाम तक्षकस्तूर्णं नगरं नागसाह्वयम् ॥२०॥
20. nivṛtte kāśyape tasminsamayena mahātmani ,
jagāma takṣakastūrṇaṁ nagaraṁ nāgasāhvayam.
20. nivṛtte kāśyape tasmin samayena mahātmani
jagāma takṣakaḥ tūrṇaṃ nagaraṃ nāgasāhvayam
20. When that great-souled Kaśyapa had returned, in due course, Takṣaka swiftly went to the city named Nāga.
अथ शुश्राव गच्छन्स तक्षको जगतीपतिम् ।
मन्त्रागदैर्विषहरै रक्ष्यमाणं प्रयत्नतः ॥२१॥
21. atha śuśrāva gacchansa takṣako jagatīpatim ,
mantrāgadairviṣaharai rakṣyamāṇaṁ prayatnataḥ.
21. atha śuśrāva gacchan sa takṣakaḥ jagatīpatim
mantrāgadaiḥ viṣaharaiḥ rakṣyamāṇam prayatnataḥ
21. Then Takṣaka, as he was proceeding, heard that the king was being diligently protected by poison-neutralizing spells and antidotes.
स चिन्तयामास तदा मायायोगेन पार्थिवः ।
मया वञ्चयितव्योऽसौ क उपायो भवेदिति ॥२२॥
22. sa cintayāmāsa tadā māyāyogena pārthivaḥ ,
mayā vañcayitavyo'sau ka upāyo bhavediti.
22. sa cintayāmāsa tadā māyāyogena pārthivaḥ mayā
vañcayitavyaḥ asau kaḥ upāyaḥ bhavet iti
22. Then Takṣaka pondered, "By what means of deception can this king be fooled by me? What would be the proper method?"
ततस्तापसरूपेण प्राहिणोत्स भुजंगमान् ।
फलपत्रोदकं गृह्य राज्ञे नागोऽथ तक्षकः ॥२३॥
23. tatastāpasarūpeṇa prāhiṇotsa bhujaṁgamān ,
phalapatrodakaṁ gṛhya rājñe nāgo'tha takṣakaḥ.
23. tataḥ tāpasarūpeṇa prāhiṇot sa bhujaṅgamān
phalapatrodakam gṛhya rājñe nāgaḥ atha takṣakaḥ
23. Thereupon, Takṣaka, the Nāga, assuming the guise of an ascetic and taking fruits, leaves, and water, sent forth serpents to the king.
तक्षक उवाच ।
गच्छध्वं यूयमव्यग्रा राजानं कार्यवत्तया ।
फलपत्रोदकं नाम प्रतिग्राहयितुं नृपम् ॥२४॥
24. takṣaka uvāca ,
gacchadhvaṁ yūyamavyagrā rājānaṁ kāryavattayā ,
phalapatrodakaṁ nāma pratigrāhayituṁ nṛpam.
24. takṣakaḥ uvāca gacchadhvam yūyam avyagrāḥ rājānam
kāryavattayā phalapatrodakam nāma pratigrāhayitum nṛpam
24. Takṣaka said: "All of you, proceed diligently to the king for this important task, to offer him these items called 'fruits, leaves, and water'."
सूत उवाच ।
ते तक्षकसमादिष्टास्तथा चक्रुर्भुजंगमाः ।
उपनिन्युस्तथा राज्ञे दर्भानापः फलानि च ॥२५॥
25. sūta uvāca ,
te takṣakasamādiṣṭāstathā cakrurbhujaṁgamāḥ ,
upaninyustathā rājñe darbhānāpaḥ phalāni ca.
25. sūtaḥ uvāca te takṣakasamādiṣṭāḥ tathā cakruḥ
bhujaṅgamāḥ upaninyuḥ tathā rājñe darbhān āpaḥ phalāni ca
25. Sūta said: "Those serpents, thus commanded by Takṣaka, acted accordingly. They presented to the king darbha grass, water, and fruits."
तच्च सर्वं स राजेन्द्रः प्रतिजग्राह वीर्यवान् ।
कृत्वा च तेषां कार्याणि गम्यतामित्युवाच तान् ॥२६॥
26. tacca sarvaṁ sa rājendraḥ pratijagrāha vīryavān ,
kṛtvā ca teṣāṁ kāryāṇi gamyatāmityuvāca tān.
26. tat ca sarvam sa rājendraḥ pratijagrāha vīryavān
kṛtvā ca teṣām kāryāṇi gamyatām iti uvāca tān
26. The powerful great king accepted all of it, and after completing their tasks, he told them, "You may go."
गतेषु तेषु नागेषु तापसच्छद्मरूपिषु ।
अमात्यान्सुहृदश्चैव प्रोवाच स नराधिपः ॥२७॥
27. gateṣu teṣu nāgeṣu tāpasacchadmarūpiṣu ,
amātyānsuhṛdaścaiva provāca sa narādhipaḥ.
27. gateṣu teṣu nāgeṣu tāpasacchadmarūpiṣu
amātyān suhṛdaḥ ca eva provāca sa narādhipaḥ
27. After those serpents, who were disguised as ascetics, had departed, that king spoke to his ministers and friends.
भक्षयन्तु भवन्तो वै स्वादूनीमानि सर्वशः ।
तापसैरुपनीतानि फलानि सहिता मया ॥२८॥
28. bhakṣayantu bhavanto vai svādūnīmāni sarvaśaḥ ,
tāpasairupanītāni phalāni sahitā mayā.
28. bhakṣayantu bhavantaḥ vai svādūnī imāni
sarvaśaḥ tāpasaiḥ upanītāni phalāni sahitā mayā
28. "Indeed, you all, along with me, should eat all these delicious fruits that were brought by the ascetics."
ततो राजा ससचिवः फलान्यादातुमैच्छत ।
यद्गृहीतं फलं राज्ञा तत्र कृमिरभूदणुः ।
ह्रस्वकः कृष्णनयनस्ताम्रो वर्णेन शौनक ॥२९॥
29. tato rājā sasacivaḥ phalānyādātumaicchata ,
yadgṛhītaṁ phalaṁ rājñā tatra kṛmirabhūdaṇuḥ ,
hrasvakaḥ kṛṣṇanayanastāmro varṇena śaunaka.
29. tataḥ rājā sasacivaḥ phalāni ādātum
aicchat yat gṛhītam phalam rājñā
tatra kṛmiḥ abhūt aṇuḥ hrasvakaḥ
kṛṣṇanayanaḥ tāmraḥ varṇena śaunaka
29. Then the king, accompanied by his minister, wished to take the fruits. The fruit that the king picked contained a tiny worm, which was small, had black eyes, and was coppery in color, O Śaunaka.
स तं गृह्य नृपश्रेष्ठः सचिवानिदमब्रवीत् ।
अस्तमभ्येति सविता विषादद्य न मे भयम् ॥३०॥
30. sa taṁ gṛhya nṛpaśreṣṭhaḥ sacivānidamabravīt ,
astamabhyeti savitā viṣādadya na me bhayam.
30. sa tam gṛhya nṛpaśreṣṭhaḥ sacivān idam abravīt
astam abhyeti savitā viṣāt adya na me bhayam
30. Taking it (the fruit with the worm), that best of kings said this to his ministers: "The sun is setting. Today, I have no fear of poison."
सत्यवागस्तु स मुनिः कृमिको मां दशत्वयम् ।
तक्षको नाम भूत्वा वै तथा परिहृतं भवेत् ॥३१॥
31. satyavāgastu sa muniḥ kṛmiko māṁ daśatvayam ,
takṣako nāma bhūtvā vai tathā parihṛtaṁ bhavet.
31. satyavāk astu saḥ muniḥ kṛmikaḥ mām daśatu ayam
takṣakaḥ nāma bhūtvā vai tathā parihṛtam bhavet
31. May that sage's word be true; may this worm bite me, having indeed become Takṣaka by name. Thus, the prophecy would be fulfilled.
ते चैनमन्ववर्तन्त मन्त्रिणः कालचोदिताः ।
एवमुक्त्वा स राजेन्द्रो ग्रीवायां संनिवेश्य ह ।
कृमिकं प्राहसत्तूर्णं मुमूर्षुर्नष्टचेतनः ॥३२॥
32. te cainamanvavartanta mantriṇaḥ kālacoditāḥ ,
evamuktvā sa rājendro grīvāyāṁ saṁniveśya ha ,
kṛmikaṁ prāhasattūrṇaṁ mumūrṣurnaṣṭacetanaḥ.
32. te ca enam anu avartanta mantriṇaḥ
kālacoditāḥ evam uktvā saḥ rājendraḥ
grīvāyām saṃniveśya ha kṛmikam
prahasat tūrṇam mumūrṣuḥ naṣṭacetanaḥ
32. Impelled by fate, his ministers followed him. Having spoken thus, that great king, desirous of death and with his consciousness lost, placed (the worm) on his neck and swiftly laughed at it.
हसन्नेव च भोगेन तक्षकेणाभिवेष्टितः ।
तस्मात्फलाद्विनिष्क्रम्य यत्तद्राज्ञे निवेदितम् ॥३३॥
33. hasanneva ca bhogena takṣakeṇābhiveṣṭitaḥ ,
tasmātphalādviniṣkramya yattadrājñe niveditam.
33. hasan eva ca bhogena takṣakeṇa abhiveṣṭitaḥ
tasmāt phalāt viniṣkramya yat tat rājñe niveditam
33. And just as he was laughing, he was encircled by Takṣaka's coils. (Takṣaka had) emerged from that fruit which had been presented to the king.
