वैशंपायन उवाच ।
अथापरोऽदृश्यत पाण्डवः प्रभुर्विराटराज्ञस्तुरगान्समीक्षतः ।
तमापतन्तं ददृशे पृथग्जनो विमुक्तमभ्रादिव सूर्यमण्डलम् ॥१॥
1. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
athāparo'dṛśyata pāṇḍavaḥ prabhu;rvirāṭarājñasturagānsamīkṣataḥ ,
tamāpatantaṁ dadṛśe pṛthagjano; vimuktamabhrādiva sūryamaṇḍalam.
1. vaiśaṃpāyana uvāca | atha aparaḥ adṛśyata
pāṇḍavaḥ prabhuḥ virāṭarājñaḥ turagān
samīkṣataḥ | tam āpatantam dadṛśe pṛthak
janaḥ vimuktam abhrāt iva sūryamaṇḍalam
1. Vaiśaṃpāyana said: "Then another lordly Pāṇḍava (Arjuna) became visible to King Virāṭa, who was inspecting the horses. The common people beheld him approaching, like the sun's orb (sūryamaṇḍalam) freed from a cloud."
स वै हयानैक्षत तांस्ततस्ततः समीक्षमाणं च ददर्श मत्स्यराट् ।
ततोऽब्रवीत्ताननुगानमित्रहा कुतोऽयमायाति नरोऽमरप्रभः ॥२॥
2. sa vai hayānaikṣata tāṁstatastataḥ; samīkṣamāṇaṁ ca dadarśa matsyarāṭ ,
tato'bravīttānanugānamitrahā; kuto'yamāyāti naro'maraprabhaḥ.
2. sa vai hayān aikṣata tān tataḥ tataḥ
samīkṣamāṇam ca dadarśa matsyarāṭ
| tataḥ abravīt tān anugān amitrahā
kutaḥ ayam āyāti naraḥ amaraprabhaḥ
2. Indeed, he gazed at those horses here and there, and the Matsya King (Virāṭa) saw him observing. Then, the enemy-slayer (amitrahā) spoke to his attendants: 'From where does this man, radiant like an immortal, come?'
अयं हयान्वीक्षति मामकान्दृढं ध्रुवं हयज्ञो भविता विचक्षणः ।
प्रवेश्यतामेष समीपमाशु मे विभाति वीरो हि यथामरस्तथा ॥३॥
3. ayaṁ hayānvīkṣati māmakāndṛḍhaṁ; dhruvaṁ hayajño bhavitā vicakṣaṇaḥ ,
praveśyatāmeṣa samīpamāśu me; vibhāti vīro hi yathāmarastathā.
3. ayam hayān vīkṣati māmakān dṛḍham
dhruvam hayajñaḥ bhavitā vicakṣaṇaḥ
| praveśyatām eṣa samīpam āśu me
vibhāti vīraḥ hi yathā amaraḥ tathā
3. "This man intently observes my horses. Surely, he must be a discerning expert in horses. Let him be brought near to me quickly, for he truly shines like a hero, just like an immortal."
अभ्येत्य राजानममित्रहाब्रवीज्जयोऽस्तु ते पार्थिव भद्रमस्तु च ।
हयेषु युक्तो नृप संमतः सदा तवाश्वसूतो निपुणो भवाम्यहम् ॥४॥
4. abhyetya rājānamamitrahābravī;jjayo'stu te pārthiva bhadramastu ca ,
hayeṣu yukto nṛpa saṁmataḥ sadā; tavāśvasūto nipuṇo bhavāmyaham.
4. abhyetya rājānam amitrahā abravīt
jayaḥ astu te pārthiva bhadram astu
ca hayeṣu yuktaḥ nṛpa saṃmataḥ sadā
tava aśvasūtaḥ nipuṇaḥ bhavāmi aham
4. Approaching the king, the destroyer of enemies said, "May victory be yours, O King, and may you be well. O King, I am always esteemed for my skill with horses, and I can be your expert charioteer."
विराट उवाच ।
ददामि यानानि धनं निवेशनं ममाश्वसूतो भवितुं त्वमर्हसि ।
कुतोऽसि कस्यासि कथं त्वमागतः प्रब्रूहि शिल्पं तव विद्यते च यत् ॥५॥
5. virāṭa uvāca ,
dadāmi yānāni dhanaṁ niveśanaṁ; mamāśvasūto bhavituṁ tvamarhasi ,
kuto'si kasyāsi kathaṁ tvamāgataḥ; prabrūhi śilpaṁ tava vidyate ca yat.
5. virāṭaḥ uvāca dadāmi yānāni dhanam
niveśanam mama aśvasūtaḥ bhavitum tvam
arhasi kutaḥ asi kasya asi katham tvam
āgataḥ prabrūhi śilpam tava vidyate ca yat
5. Virata said, "I will provide conveyances, wealth, and a residence; you are indeed worthy to be my charioteer. Where are you from? Whose family do you belong to? How did you come here? Please tell me what skills you possess."
नकुल उवाच ।
पञ्चानां पाण्डुपुत्राणां ज्येष्ठो राजा युधिष्ठिरः ।
तेनाहमश्वेषु पुरा प्रकृतः शत्रुकर्शन ॥६॥
6. nakula uvāca ,
pañcānāṁ pāṇḍuputrāṇāṁ jyeṣṭho rājā yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ,
tenāhamaśveṣu purā prakṛtaḥ śatrukarśana.
6. nakulaḥ uvāca pañcānām pāṇḍuputrāṇām jyeṣṭhaḥ rājā
yudhiṣṭhiraḥ tena aham aśveṣu purā prakṛtaḥ śatrukaraśana
6. Nakula said, "Among the five sons of Pandu, the eldest is King Yudhishthira. By him, I was formerly employed in matters of horses, O destroyer of enemies."
अश्वानां प्रकृतिं वेद्मि विनयं चापि सर्वशः ।
दुष्टानां प्रतिपत्तिं च कृत्स्नं चैव चिकित्सितम् ॥७॥
7. aśvānāṁ prakṛtiṁ vedmi vinayaṁ cāpi sarvaśaḥ ,
duṣṭānāṁ pratipattiṁ ca kṛtsnaṁ caiva cikitsitam.
7. aśvānām prakṛtim vedmi vinayam ca api sarvaśaḥ
duṣṭānām pratipattim ca kṛtsnam ca eva cikitsitam
7. "I know the intrinsic nature (prakṛti) of horses and their training thoroughly. I also understand the management of unruly horses and all their medical treatment."
न कातरं स्यान्मम जातु वाहनं न मेऽस्ति दुष्टा वडवा कुतो हयाः ।
जनस्तु मामाह स चापि पाण्डवो युधिष्ठिरो ग्रन्थिकमेव नामतः ॥८॥
8. na kātaraṁ syānmama jātu vāhanaṁ; na me'sti duṣṭā vaḍavā kuto hayāḥ ,
janastu māmāha sa cāpi pāṇḍavo; yudhiṣṭhiro granthikameva nāmataḥ.
8. na kātaram syāt mama jātu vāhanam na
me asti duṣṭā vaḍavā kutaḥ hayāḥ
janaḥ tu mām āha saḥ ca api pāṇḍavaḥ
yudhiṣṭhiraḥ granthikam eva nāmatas
8. My conveyance will never be timid, nor do I possess any vicious mare. How then could I have (bad) horses? People, however, call me, that scion of Pāṇḍu, Yudhiṣṭhira, by the name Granthaika.
विराट उवाच ।
यदस्ति किंचिन्मम वाजिवाहनं तदस्तु सर्वं त्वदधीनमद्य वै ।
ये चापि केचिन्मम वाजियोजकास्त्वदाश्रयाः सारथयश्च सन्तु मे ॥९॥
9. virāṭa uvāca ,
yadasti kiṁcinmama vājivāhanaṁ; tadastu sarvaṁ tvadadhīnamadya vai ,
ye cāpi kecinmama vājiyojakā;stvadāśrayāḥ sārathayaśca santu me.
9. virāṭa uvāca yat asti kiñcit mama
vājivāhanam tat astu sarvam tvat adhīnam
adya vai ye ca api kecit mama vājiyojakāḥ
tvat āśrayāḥ sārathayaḥ ca santu me
9. Virāṭa said: 'Whatever horse-drawn conveyance I possess, let all of it be under your control right now. And whatever horse-trainers I have, let them also be dependent on you as charioteers.'
इदं तवेष्टं यदि वै सुरोपम ब्रवीहि यत्ते प्रसमीक्षितं वसु ।
न तेऽनुरूपं हयकर्म विद्यते प्रभासि राजेव हि संमतो मम ॥१०॥
10. idaṁ taveṣṭaṁ yadi vai suropama; bravīhi yatte prasamīkṣitaṁ vasu ,
na te'nurūpaṁ hayakarma vidyate; prabhāsi rājeva hi saṁmato mama.
10. idam tava iṣṭam yadi vai suropama
bravīhi yat te prasamīkṣitam vasu
na te anurūpam hayakarma vidyate
prabhāsi rājā iva hi saṃmataḥ mama
10. If this is indeed agreeable to you, O god-like one, then tell me what wealth you deem appropriate. Work with horses is not suitable for you, for you shine like a king and are highly esteemed by me.
युधिष्ठिरस्येव हि दर्शनेन मे समं तवेदं प्रियदर्श दर्शनम् ।
कथं तु भृत्यैः स विनाकृतो वने वसत्यनिन्द्यो रमते च पाण्डवः ॥११॥
11. yudhiṣṭhirasyeva hi darśanena me; samaṁ tavedaṁ priyadarśa darśanam ,
kathaṁ tu bhṛtyaiḥ sa vinākṛto vane; vasatyanindyo ramate ca pāṇḍavaḥ.
11. yudhiṣṭhirasya iva hi darśanena me
samam tava idam priyadarśa darśanam
katham tu bhṛtyaiḥ saḥ vinākṛtaḥ
vane vasati anindyaḥ ramate ca pāṇḍavaḥ
11. Truly, to me, this pleasing sight of yours, O dear one, is like that of Yudhiṣṭhira. But how does that blameless scion of Pāṇḍu, separated from his servants, live and find joy in the forest?
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
तथा स गन्धर्ववरोपमो युवा विराटराज्ञा मुदितेन पूजितः ।
न चैनमन्येऽपि विदुः कथंचन प्रियाभिरामं विचरन्तमन्तरा ॥१२॥
12. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
tathā sa gandharvavaropamo yuvā; virāṭarājñā muditena pūjitaḥ ,
na cainamanye'pi viduḥ kathaṁcana; priyābhirāmaṁ vicarantamantarā.
12. vaiśaṃpāyana uvāca tathā sa gandharvavaropamaḥ
yuvā virāṭarājñā muditena
pūjitaḥ na ca enam anye api viduḥ
kathaṃcana priyābhirāmaṃ vicarantam antarā
12. Vaiśaṃpāyana said: Thus, that young man, resembling the best of the gandharvas, was honored by King Virāṭa, who was delighted. Yet, no one else could somehow recognize him as he moved about, delighting everyone in their midst.
एवं हि मत्स्ये न्यवसन्त पाण्डवा यथाप्रतिज्ञाभिरमोघदर्शनाः ।
अज्ञातचर्यां व्यचरन्समाहिताः समुद्रनेमीपतयोऽतिदुःखिताः ॥१३॥
13. evaṁ hi matsye nyavasanta pāṇḍavā; yathāpratijñābhiramoghadarśanāḥ ,
ajñātacaryāṁ vyacaransamāhitāḥ; samudranemīpatayo'tiduḥkhitāḥ.
13. evaṃ hi matsye nyavasanta pāṇḍavā
yathāpratijñābhiḥ amoghadarśanāḥ
ajñātacaryāṃ vyacaran samāhitāḥ
samudranemīpatayaḥ atiduḥkhitāḥ
13. Thus, the Pāṇḍavas, whose sight was unfailing and whose vows were firm, resided in the Matsya kingdom. Though they were lords of the sea-girt earth, they diligently observed their period of incognito living, enduring great sorrow.
