स्थिते मुहूर्तं पार्थे तु धर्मराजे युधिष्ठिरे ।
आजग्मुस्तत्र कौरव्य देवाः शक्रपुरोगमाः ॥१॥

1. Vaiśampāyana said: While Pārtha and King Yudhiṣṭhira, the upholder of natural law (dharma), remained there for a moment, O scion of Kuru, the gods, led by Indra, arrived there.
स्वयं विग्रहवान्धर्मो राजानं प्रसमीक्षितुम् ।
तत्राजगाम यत्रासौ कुरुराजो युधिष्ठिरः ॥२॥
2. svayaṁ vigrahavāndharmo rājānaṁ prasamīkṣitum ,
tatrājagāma yatrāsau kururājo yudhiṣṭhiraḥ.

2. Natural law (dharma) itself, in embodied form, arrived there to observe the king, specifically where that King Yudhiṣṭhira, the Kuru monarch, was present.
तेषु भास्वरदेहेषु पुण्याभिजनकर्मसु ।
समागतेषु देवेषु व्यगमत्तत्तमो नृप ॥३॥
3. teṣu bhāsvaradeheṣu puṇyābhijanakarmasu ,
samāgateṣu deveṣu vyagamattattamo nṛpa.

3. O King, as those gods arrived, possessing lustrous bodies and performing actions born of merit, that darkness completely disappeared.
नादृश्यन्त च तास्तत्र यातनाः पापकर्मिणाम् ।
नदी वैतरणी चैव कूटशाल्मलिना सह ॥४॥
4. nādṛśyanta ca tāstatra yātanāḥ pāpakarmiṇām ,
nadī vaitaraṇī caiva kūṭaśālmalinā saha.
4. na adṛśyanta ca tāḥ tatra yātanāḥ pāpakarmīṇām
| nadī vaitaraṇī ca eva kūṭaśālmalinā saha

4. And there, those torments of the evildoers, the river Vaitaraṇī, and even the Kuṭaśālmali tree along with it, were no longer visible.
लोहकुम्भ्यः शिलाश्चैव नादृश्यन्त भयानकाः ।
विकृतानि शरीराणि यानि तत्र समन्ततः ।
ददर्श राजा कौन्तेयस्तान्यदृश्यानि चाभवन् ॥५॥
5. lohakumbhyaḥ śilāścaiva nādṛśyanta bhayānakāḥ ,
vikṛtāni śarīrāṇi yāni tatra samantataḥ ,
dadarśa rājā kaunteyastānyadṛśyāni cābhavan.

adṛśyanta bhayānakāḥ vikṛtāni śarīrāṇi

5. Terrifying iron pots and stones were not visible. King Kaunteya, however, saw disfigured bodies all around, and then they became invisible.
ततो वायुः सुखस्पर्शः पुण्यगन्धवहः शिवः ।
ववौ देवसमीपस्थः शीतलोऽतीव भारत ॥६॥
6. tato vāyuḥ sukhasparśaḥ puṇyagandhavahaḥ śivaḥ ,
vavau devasamīpasthaḥ śītalo'tīva bhārata.
6. tataḥ vāyuḥ sukhasparśaḥ puṇyagandhavahaḥ śivaḥ
vavau devasamīpasthaḥ śītalaḥ atīva bhārata
6. bhārata tataḥ devasamīpasthaḥ atīva śītalaḥ
sukhasparśaḥ puṇyagandhavahaḥ śivaḥ vāyuḥ vavau
6. Then, O Bhārata, a very cool wind, pleasant to the touch, carrying a sacred fragrance, and auspicious, blew near the gods.
मरुतः सह शक्रेण वसवश्चाश्विनौ सह ।
साध्या रुद्रास्तथादित्या ये चान्येऽपि दिवौकसः ॥७॥
7. marutaḥ saha śakreṇa vasavaścāśvinau saha ,
sādhyā rudrāstathādityā ye cānye'pi divaukasaḥ.

rudrāḥ tathā ādityāḥ ye ca anye api divaukasaḥ

7. The Maruts, with Shakra (Indra), and the Vasus with the two Ashvins, as well as the Sadhyas, the Rudras, and the Adityas, and also any other dwellers of heaven (divaukasaḥ).
सर्वे तत्र समाजग्मुः सिद्धाश्च परमर्षयः ।
यत्र राजा महातेजा धर्मपुत्रः स्थितोऽभवत् ॥८॥
8. sarve tatra samājagmuḥ siddhāśca paramarṣayaḥ ,
yatra rājā mahātejā dharmaputraḥ sthito'bhavat.

8. All of them assembled there - the Siddhas and the great sages - at the place where the greatly effulgent King, Dharmaputra (son of dharma), was present.
ततः शक्रः सुरपतिः श्रिया परमया युतः ।
युधिष्ठिरमुवाचेदं सान्त्वपूर्वमिदं वचः ॥९॥
9. tataḥ śakraḥ surapatiḥ śriyā paramayā yutaḥ ,
yudhiṣṭhiramuvācedaṁ sāntvapūrvamidaṁ vacaḥ.

yudhiṣṭhiram uvāca idam sāntvapūrvam idam vacaḥ

9. Then Indra, the lord of the gods, endowed with supreme splendor, spoke these consoling words to Yudhishthira.
युधिष्ठिर महाबाहो प्रीता देवगणास्तव ।
एह्येहि पुरुषव्याघ्र कृतमेतावता विभो ।
सिद्धिः प्राप्ता त्वया राजँल्लोकाश्चाप्यक्षयास्तव ॥१०॥
10. yudhiṣṭhira mahābāho prītā devagaṇāstava ,
ehyehi puruṣavyāghra kṛtametāvatā vibho ,
siddhiḥ prāptā tvayā rājaँllokāścāpyakṣayāstava.
10. yudhiṣṭhira mahābāho prītāḥ devagaṇāḥ
tava | ehi ehi puruṣavyāghra kṛtam
etāvatā vibho | siddhiḥ prāptā
tvayā rājan lokāḥ ca api akṣayāḥ tava

ca api tava lokāḥ akṣayāḥ
10. O Yudhishthira, O mighty-armed one, the hosts of gods are pleased with you. Come, come, O tiger among men, this much has been accomplished, O powerful one. Success has been attained by you, O King, and your worlds are indeed imperishable.
न च मन्युस्त्वया कार्यः शृणु चेदं वचो मम ।
अवश्यं नरकस्तात द्रष्टव्यः सर्वराजभिः ॥११॥
11. na ca manyustvayā kāryaḥ śṛṇu cedaṁ vaco mama ,
avaśyaṁ narakastāta draṣṭavyaḥ sarvarājabhiḥ.
11. na ca manyuḥ tvayā kāryaḥ śṛṇu ca idam vacaḥ mama
| avaśyam narakaḥ tāta draṣṭavyaḥ sarvarājabhiḥ
11. tāta,
tvayā ca manyuḥ na kāryaḥ ca mama idam vacaḥ śṛṇu narakaḥ avaśyam sarvarājabhiḥ draṣṭavyaḥ
11. And you should not harbor any resentment. Listen, O dear one, to this word of mine. Indeed, hell (naraka) must certainly be seen by all kings.
शुभानामशुभानां च द्वौ राशी पुरुषर्षभ ।
यः पूर्वं सुकृतं भुङ्क्ते पश्चान्निरयमेति सः ।
पूर्वं नरकभाग्यस्तु पश्चात्स्वर्गमुपैति सः ॥१२॥
12. śubhānāmaśubhānāṁ ca dvau rāśī puruṣarṣabha ,
yaḥ pūrvaṁ sukṛtaṁ bhuṅkte paścānnirayameti saḥ ,
pūrvaṁ narakabhāgyastu paścātsvargamupaiti saḥ.

puruṣarṣabha | yaḥ pūrvam sukṛtam bhuṅkte
paścāt nirayam eti saḥ | pūrvam
narakabhāgyaḥ tu paścāt svargam upaiti saḥ
12. puruṣarṣabha,
dvau rāśī śubhānām ca aśubhānām (sthaḥ).
yaḥ pūrvam sukṛtam bhuṅkte,
saḥ paścāt nirayam eti.
tu yaḥ pūrvam narakabhāgyaḥ,
saḥ paścāt svargam upaiti.
12. O foremost of men, there are two accumulations: of good deeds and of bad deeds. He who first experiences the fruits of good deeds later goes to hell (niraya). But he who first experiences hell (naraka) afterwards attains heaven.
भूयिष्ठं पापकर्मा यः स पूर्वं स्वर्गमश्नुते ।
तेन त्वमेवं गमितो मया श्रेयोर्थिना नृप ॥१३॥
13. bhūyiṣṭhaṁ pāpakarmā yaḥ sa pūrvaṁ svargamaśnute ,
tena tvamevaṁ gamito mayā śreyorthinā nṛpa.
13. bhūyiṣṭham pāpakarmā yaḥ saḥ pūrvam svargam aśnute
tena tvam evam gamitaḥ mayā śreyorthinā nṛpa
13. yaḥ bhūyiṣṭham pāpakarmā saḥ pūrvam svargam aśnute
nṛpa tena śreyorthinā mayā tvam evam gamitaḥ
13. The one who commits many sinful deeds first attains heaven. Therefore, O king, I, desiring your ultimate welfare, caused you to come here in this manner.
व्याजेन हि त्वया द्रोण उपचीर्णः सुतं प्रति ।
व्याजेनैव ततो राजन्दर्शितो नरकस्तव ॥१४॥
14. vyājena hi tvayā droṇa upacīrṇaḥ sutaṁ prati ,
vyājenaiva tato rājandarśito narakastava.
14. vyājena hi tvayā droṇaḥ upacīrṇaḥ sutam prati
vyājena eva tataḥ rājan darśitaḥ narakaḥ tava
14. hi tvayā vyājena sutam prati droṇaḥ upacīrṇaḥ
rājan tataḥ vyājena eva tava narakaḥ darśitaḥ
14. Indeed, Drona was deceived by you through trickery regarding his son. Therefore, O king, hell was revealed to you precisely through that same deceit.
यथैव त्वं तथा भीमस्तथा पार्थो यमौ तथा ।
द्रौपदी च तथा कृष्णा व्याजेन नरकं गताः ॥१५॥
15. yathaiva tvaṁ tathā bhīmastathā pārtho yamau tathā ,
draupadī ca tathā kṛṣṇā vyājena narakaṁ gatāḥ.
15. yathā eva tvam tathā bhīmaḥ tathā pārthaḥ yamau
tathā draupadī ca tathā kṛṣṇā vyājena narakam gatāḥ
15. yathā eva tvam tathā bhīmaḥ tathā pārthaḥ tathā
yamau draupadī ca tathā kṛṣṇā vyājena narakam gatāḥ
15. Just as you, so too Bhima, Arjuna, and the two twins (Nakula and Sahadeva), and Draupadi, also known as Kṛṣṇā, have similarly gone to hell due to deceit.
आगच्छ नरशार्दूल मुक्तास्ते चैव किल्बिषात् ।
स्वपक्षाश्चैव ये तुभ्यं पार्थिवा निहता रणे ।
सर्वे स्वर्गमनुप्राप्तास्तान्पश्य पुरुषर्षभ ॥१६॥
16. āgaccha naraśārdūla muktāste caiva kilbiṣāt ,
svapakṣāścaiva ye tubhyaṁ pārthivā nihatā raṇe ,
sarve svargamanuprāptāstānpaśya puruṣarṣabha.
16. āgaccha naraśārdūla muktāḥ te ca eva
kilbiṣāt svapakṣāḥ ca eva ye tubhyam
pārthivāḥ nihatāḥ raṇe sarve svargam
anuprāptāḥ tān paśya puruṣarṣabha
16. naraśārdūla āgaccha te ca eva kilbiṣāt
muktāḥ ye ca eva tubhyam svapakṣāḥ
pārthivāḥ raṇe nihatāḥ sarve svargam
anuprāptāḥ puruṣarṣabha tān paśya
16. Come, O best of men! They (the Pāṇḍavas and Draupadī) are now freed from sin. And all those kings of your side who were slain in battle have also attained heaven. See them, O bull among men!
कर्णश्चैव महेष्वासः सर्वशस्त्रभृतां वरः ।
स गतः परमां सिद्धिं यदर्थं परितप्यसे ॥१७॥
17. karṇaścaiva maheṣvāsaḥ sarvaśastrabhṛtāṁ varaḥ ,
sa gataḥ paramāṁ siddhiṁ yadarthaṁ paritapyase.
17. karṇaḥ ca eva maheṣvāsaḥ sarvaśastrabhṛtām varaḥ
saḥ gataḥ paramām siddhim yat artham paritapyase
17. maheṣvāsaḥ sarvaśastrabhṛtām varaḥ karṇaḥ ca eva yat artham tvam paritapyase,
saḥ paramām siddhim gataḥ
17. Karna, the great archer and the best among all wielders of weapons, has attained his supreme destiny, for whose sake you lament.
तं पश्य पुरुषव्याघ्रमादित्यतनयं विभो ।
स्वस्थानस्थं महाबाहो जहि शोकं नरर्षभ ॥१८॥
18. taṁ paśya puruṣavyāghramādityatanayaṁ vibho ,
svasthānasthaṁ mahābāho jahi śokaṁ nararṣabha.
18. tam paśya puruṣavyāghram ādityatanayam vibho
svasthānastham mahābāho jahi śokam nararṣabha
18. vibho nararṣabha mahābāho tvam puruṣavyāghram
ādityatanayam svasthānastham tam paśya śokam jahi
18. O mighty one (vibho), behold him, the tiger among men (puruṣavyāghra), the son of the sun, Karna, now established in his own place. O mighty-armed one (mahābāho), abandon your grief!
भ्रातॄंश्चान्यांस्तथा पश्य स्वपक्षांश्चैव पार्थिवान् ।
स्वं स्वं स्थानमनुप्राप्तान्व्येतु ते मानसो ज्वरः ॥१९॥
19. bhrātṝṁścānyāṁstathā paśya svapakṣāṁścaiva pārthivān ,
svaṁ svaṁ sthānamanuprāptānvyetu te mānaso jvaraḥ.
19. bhrātṝn ca anyān tathā paśya svapakṣān ca eva pārthivān
svam svam sthānam anuprāptān vyetu te mānasaḥ jvaraḥ
19. tathā ca anyān bhrātṝn ca eva pārthivān svapakṣān svam
svam sthānam anuprāptān paśya te mānasaḥ jvaraḥ vyetu
19. And also behold your brothers and other kings from your own faction, each having attained their own rightful place. Let your mental fever (mānaso jvara) depart.
अनुभूय पूर्वं त्वं कृच्छ्रमितः प्रभृति कौरव ।
विहरस्व मया सार्धं गतशोको निरामयः ॥२०॥
20. anubhūya pūrvaṁ tvaṁ kṛcchramitaḥ prabhṛti kaurava ,
viharasva mayā sārdhaṁ gataśoko nirāmayaḥ.
20. anubhūya pūrvam tvam kṛcchram itaḥ prabhṛti
kaurava viharasva mayā sārdham gataśokaḥ nirāmayaḥ
20. kaurava tvam pūrvam kṛcchram anubhūya itaḥ prabhṛti
gataśokaḥ nirāmayaḥ mayā sārdham viharasva
20. O Kuru (kaurava), having previously endured hardship, from now on, free from sorrow and untroubled, enjoy yourself with me.
कर्मणां तात पुण्यानां जितानां तपसा स्वयम् ।
दानानां च महाबाहो फलं प्राप्नुहि पाण्डव ॥२१॥
21. karmaṇāṁ tāta puṇyānāṁ jitānāṁ tapasā svayam ,
dānānāṁ ca mahābāho phalaṁ prāpnuhi pāṇḍava.
21. karmaṇām tāta puṇyānām jitānām tapasā svayam
dānānām ca mahābāho phalam prāpnuhi pāṇḍava
21. tāta mahābāho pāṇḍava karmaṇām puṇyānām tapasā
svayam jitānām ca dānānām phalam prāpnuhi
21. O dear one, O mighty-armed Pāṇḍava, attain the fruit of meritorious actions (karma), of those (achievements) gained through your own asceticism (tapas), and of your donations (dāna).
अद्य त्वां देवगन्धर्वा दिव्याश्चाप्सरसो दिवि ।
उपसेवन्तु कल्याणं विरजोम्बरवाससः ॥२२॥
22. adya tvāṁ devagandharvā divyāścāpsaraso divi ,
upasevantu kalyāṇaṁ virajombaravāsasaḥ.
22. adya tvām devagandharvāḥ divyāḥ ca apsarasaḥ
divi upasevantu kalyāṇam virajaḥ ambara vāsasaḥ
22. adya kalyāṇam virajaḥ ambara vāsasaḥ devagandharvāḥ
ca divyāḥ apsarasaḥ divi tvām upasevantu
22. Today, O blessed one, may the divine Gandharvas and celestial Apsarases, wearing spotless garments, attend upon you in heaven.
राजसूयजिताँल्लोकानश्वमेधाभिवर्धितान् ।
प्राप्नुहि त्वं महाबाहो तपसश्च फलं महत् ॥२३॥
23. rājasūyajitāँllokānaśvamedhābhivardhitān ,
prāpnuhi tvaṁ mahābāho tapasaśca phalaṁ mahat.
23. rājasūyajitān lokān aśvamedhābhivardhitān
prāpnuhi tvam mahābāho tapasaḥ ca phalam mahat
23. mahābāho tvam rājasūyajitān aśvamedhābhivardhitān
lokān ca tapasaḥ mahat phalam prāpnuhi
23. O mighty-armed one, may you attain the worlds won through the Rājasūya ritual and augmented by the Aśvamedha ritual, along with the great reward of your asceticism (tapas).
उपर्युपरि राज्ञां हि तव लोका युधिष्ठिर ।
हरिश्चन्द्रसमाः पार्थ येषु त्वं विहरिष्यसि ॥२४॥
24. uparyupari rājñāṁ hi tava lokā yudhiṣṭhira ,
hariścandrasamāḥ pārtha yeṣu tvaṁ vihariṣyasi.
24. uparyupari rājñām hi tava lokāḥ yudhiṣṭhira
hariścandrasamāḥ pārtha yeṣu tvam vihariṣyasi
24. yudhiṣṭhira pārtha tava lokāḥ hi rājñām uparyupari
hariścandrasamāḥ (bhaviṣyanti) yeṣu tvam vihariṣyasi
24. Indeed, O Yudhiṣṭhira, O son of Pṛthā, your realms will be superior to (those of) all kings, just like those of Hariścandra, and in them you shall rejoice.
मान्धाता यत्र राजर्षिर्यत्र राजा भगीरथः ।
दौःषन्तिर्यत्र भरतस्तत्र त्वं विहरिष्यसि ॥२५॥
25. māndhātā yatra rājarṣiryatra rājā bhagīrathaḥ ,
dauḥṣantiryatra bharatastatra tvaṁ vihariṣyasi.
25. māndhātā yatra rājarṣiḥ yatra rājā bhagīrathaḥ
dauḥṣantiḥ yatra bharataḥ tatra tvam vihariṣyasi
25. yatra rājarṣiḥ māndhātā yatra rājā bhagīrathaḥ
yatra dauḥṣantiḥ bharataḥ tatra tvam vihariṣyasi
25. Where the royal sage Māndhātā resided, where King Bhagīratha resided, and where Bharata, son of Duḥṣanta, resided, there you too shall dwell.
एषा देवनदी पुण्या पार्थ त्रैलोक्यपावनी ।
आकाशगङ्गा राजेन्द्र तत्राप्लुत्य गमिष्यसि ॥२६॥
26. eṣā devanadī puṇyā pārtha trailokyapāvanī ,
ākāśagaṅgā rājendra tatrāplutya gamiṣyasi.
26. eṣā devanadī puṇyā pārtha trailokya-pāvanī
ākāśa-gaṅgā rājendra tatra āplutya gamiṣyasi
26. pārtha rājendra eṣā puṇyā devanadī trailokya-pāvanī
ākāśa-gaṅgā tatra āplutya gamiṣyasi
26. O Pārtha, this is the sacred divine river, the purifier of the three worlds, the celestial Gaṅgā. O King of kings, having bathed in it there, you will proceed.
अत्र स्नातस्य ते भावो मानुषो विगमिष्यति ।
गतशोको निरायासो मुक्तवैरो भविष्यसि ॥२७॥
27. atra snātasya te bhāvo mānuṣo vigamiṣyati ,
gataśoko nirāyāso muktavairo bhaviṣyasi.
27. atra snātasya te bhāvaḥ mānuṣaḥ vigamiṣyati
gata-śokaḥ nirāyāsaḥ mukta-vairaḥ bhaviṣyasi
27. atra snātasya te mānuṣaḥ bhāvaḥ vigamiṣyati
gata-śokaḥ nirāyāsaḥ mukta-vairaḥ bhaviṣyasi
27. Here, for you who has bathed, your human nature will depart. You will become free from sorrow, free from distress, and liberated from enmity.
एवं ब्रुवति देवेन्द्रे कौरवेन्द्रं युधिष्ठिरम् ।
धर्मो विग्रहवान्साक्षादुवाच सुतमात्मनः ॥२८॥
28. evaṁ bruvati devendre kauravendraṁ yudhiṣṭhiram ,
dharmo vigrahavānsākṣāduvāca sutamātmanaḥ.
28. evam bruvati devendre kauravendraM yudhiṣṭhiram
dharmaḥ vigrahavān sākṣāt uvāca sutam ātmanaḥ
28. devendre evam kauravendraM yudhiṣṭhiram bruvati
dharmaḥ vigrahavān sākṣāt ātmanaḥ sutam uvāca
28. As the lord of the gods spoke thus to Yudhiṣṭhira, the chief of the Kauravas, the principle of natural law (dharma) in embodied form directly spoke to his own son.
भो भो राजन्महाप्राज्ञ प्रीतोऽस्मि तव पुत्रक ।
मद्भक्त्या सत्यवाक्येन क्षमया च दमेन च ॥२९॥
29. bho bho rājanmahāprājña prīto'smi tava putraka ,
madbhaktyā satyavākyena kṣamayā ca damena ca.
29. bho bho rājan mahāprājña prītaḥ asmi tava putraka
mat-bhaktyā satyavākyena kṣamayā ca damena ca
29. O King, O greatly wise one, my dear son, I am pleased by your devotion (bhakti) to me, your truthfulness of speech, your forgiveness, and your self-control.
एषा तृतीया जिज्ञासा तव राजन्कृता मया ।
न शक्यसे चालयितुं स्वभावात्पार्थ हेतुभिः ॥३०॥
30. eṣā tṛtīyā jijñāsā tava rājankṛtā mayā ,
na śakyase cālayituṁ svabhāvātpārtha hetubhiḥ.
30. eṣā tṛtīyā jijñāsā tava rājan kṛtā mayā na
śakyase cālayitum svabhāvāt pārtha hetubhiḥ
30. O King, this third inquiry has been put forth by me to you. O Pārtha, you cannot be swayed from your intrinsic nature (svabhāva) by various reasons.
पूर्वं परीक्षितो हि त्वमासीर्द्वैतवनं प्रति ।
अरणीसहितस्यार्थे तच्च निस्तीर्णवानसि ॥३१॥
31. pūrvaṁ parīkṣito hi tvamāsīrdvaitavanaṁ prati ,
araṇīsahitasyārthe tacca nistīrṇavānasi.
31. pūrvam parīkṣitaḥ hi tvam āsīḥ dvaitavanam prati
araṇīsahitasya arthe tat ca nistīrṇavān asi
31. Indeed, you were tested before regarding the Dvaita forest, for the sake of the araṇi (fire-drill) wood; and that, too, you successfully accomplished.
सोदर्येषु विनष्टेषु द्रौपद्यां तत्र भारत ।
श्वरूपधारिणा पुत्र पुनस्त्वं मे परीक्षितः ॥३२॥
32. sodaryeṣu vinaṣṭeṣu draupadyāṁ tatra bhārata ,
śvarūpadhāriṇā putra punastvaṁ me parīkṣitaḥ.
32. sodaryeṣu vinaṣṭeṣu draupadyām tatra bhārata
śvarūpadhāriṇā putra punaḥ tvam me parīkṣitaḥ
32. O Bhārata, when your brothers (sodarya) had perished and Draupadī was present there, O son, you were again tested by me, who appeared in the form of a dog.
इदं तृतीयं भ्रातॄणामर्थे यत्स्थातुमिच्छसि ।
विशुद्धोऽसि महाभाग सुखी विगतकल्मषः ॥३३॥
33. idaṁ tṛtīyaṁ bhrātṝṇāmarthe yatsthātumicchasi ,
viśuddho'si mahābhāga sukhī vigatakalmaṣaḥ.
33. idam tṛtīyam bhrātṝṇām arthe yat sthātum icchasi
viśuddhaḥ asi mahābhāga sukhī vigatakalmaṣaḥ
33. mahābhāga viśuddhaḥ sukhī vigatakalmaṣaḥ asi.
yat idam tṛtīyam bhrātṝṇām arthe sthātum icchasi.
33. This third [suffering] for the sake of your brothers, which you wish to endure. You are purified, O highly blessed one, happy and freed from all defilement.
न च ते भ्रातरः पार्थ नरकस्था विशां पते ।
मायैषा देवराजेन महेन्द्रेण प्रयोजिता ॥३४॥
34. na ca te bhrātaraḥ pārtha narakasthā viśāṁ pate ,
māyaiṣā devarājena mahendreṇa prayojitā.
34. na ca te bhrātaraḥ pārtha narakasthāḥ viśām
pate māyā eṣā devarājena mahendreṇa prayojitā
34. pārtha viśām pate ca te bhrātaraḥ narakasthāḥ na.
eṣā māyā devarājena mahendreṇa prayojitā.
34. And your brothers are not in hell (naraka), O Pārtha, O lord of subjects. This is an illusion (māyā) created by Mahendra, the king of the gods.
अवश्यं नरकस्तात द्रष्टव्यः सर्वराजभिः ।
ततस्त्वया प्राप्तमिदं मुहूर्तं दुःखमुत्तमम् ॥३५॥
35. avaśyaṁ narakastāta draṣṭavyaḥ sarvarājabhiḥ ,
tatastvayā prāptamidaṁ muhūrtaṁ duḥkhamuttamam.
35. avaśyam narakaḥ tāta draṣṭavyaḥ sarvarājabhiḥ
tataḥ tvayā prāptam idam muhūrtam duḥkham uttamam
35. tāta narakaḥ sarvarājabhiḥ avaśyam draṣṭavyaḥ.
tataḥ tvayā idam uttamam muhūrtam duḥkham prāptam.
35. Certainly, O dear one, hell (naraka) must be experienced by all kings. Therefore, this great and momentary suffering has been undergone by you.
न सव्यसाची भीमो वा यमौ वा पुरुषर्षभौ ।
कर्णो वा सत्यवाक्शूरो नरकार्हाश्चिरं नृप ॥३६॥
36. na savyasācī bhīmo vā yamau vā puruṣarṣabhau ,
karṇo vā satyavākśūro narakārhāściraṁ nṛpa.
36. na savyasācī bhīmaḥ vā yamau vā puruṣarṣabhau
karṇaḥ vā satyavākśūraḥ narakārhāḥ ciram nṛpa
36. nṛpa savyasācī bhīmaḥ vā yamau puruṣarṣabhau vā karṇaḥ satyavākśūraḥ vā ciram narakārhāḥ na.
36. Neither Savyasācin, nor Bhīma, nor the two foremost of men (the twins), nor Karṇa, the truthful and heroic one, are deserving of hell (naraka) for long, O king.
न कृष्णा राजपुत्री च नरकार्हा युधिष्ठिर ।
एह्येहि भरतश्रेष्ठ पश्य गङ्गां त्रिलोकगाम् ॥३७॥
37. na kṛṣṇā rājaputrī ca narakārhā yudhiṣṭhira ,
ehyehi bharataśreṣṭha paśya gaṅgāṁ trilokagām.
37. na kṛṣṇā rājaputrī ca naraka arhā yudhiṣṭhira
ehi ehi bharataśreṣṭha paśya gaṅgām trilokagām
37. yudhiṣṭhira bharataśreṣṭha kṛṣṇā rājaputrī ca
naraka arhā na ehi ehi gaṅgām trilokagām paśya
37. O Yudhiṣṭhira, even the princess Kṛṣṇā (Draupadī) is not deserving of hell. Come, O best of the Bhāratas, and behold the Gaṅgā, which traverses the three worlds.
एवमुक्तः स राजर्षिस्तव पूर्वपितामहः ।
जगाम सह धर्मेण सर्वैश्च त्रिदशालयैः ॥३८॥
38. evamuktaḥ sa rājarṣistava pūrvapitāmahaḥ ,
jagāma saha dharmeṇa sarvaiśca tridaśālayaiḥ.
38. evam uktaḥ saḥ rājarṣiḥ tava pūrvapitāmahaḥ
jagāma saha dharmeṇa sarvaiḥ ca tridaśālayaiḥ
38. evam uktaḥ tava pūrvapitāmahaḥ saḥ rājarṣiḥ
dharmeṇa sarvaiḥ ca tridaśālayaiḥ saha jagāma
38. Thus addressed, that royal sage, your great-grandfather, departed along with (dharma) and all the divine beings.
गङ्गां देवनदीं पुण्यां पावनीमृषिसंस्तुताम् ।
अवगाह्य तु तां राजा तनुं तत्याज मानुषीम् ॥३९॥
39. gaṅgāṁ devanadīṁ puṇyāṁ pāvanīmṛṣisaṁstutām ,
avagāhya tu tāṁ rājā tanuṁ tatyāja mānuṣīm.
39. gaṅgām devanadīm puṇyām pāvanīm ṛṣisaṃstutām
avagāhya tu tām rājā tanum tatyāja mānuṣīm
39. rājā tām gaṅgām devanadīm puṇyām pāvanīm
ṛṣisaṃstutām avagāhya tu mānuṣīm tanum tatyāja
39. Having plunged into that Gaṅgā, the divine river, sacred, purifying, and praised by sages, the king then abandoned his human body.
ततो दिव्यवपुर्भूत्वा धर्मराजो युधिष्ठिरः ।
निर्वैरो गतसंतापो जले तस्मिन्समाप्लुतः ॥४०॥
40. tato divyavapurbhūtvā dharmarājo yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ,
nirvairo gatasaṁtāpo jale tasminsamāplutaḥ.
40. tataḥ divyavapuḥ bhūtvā dharmarājaḥ yudhiṣṭhiraḥ
nirvairaḥ gatasaṃtāpaḥ jale tasmin samāplutaḥ
40. tataḥ dharmarājaḥ yudhiṣṭhiraḥ divyavapuḥ bhūtvā
nirvairaḥ gatasaṃtāpaḥ tasmin jale samāplutaḥ
40. Thereafter, Yudhiṣṭhira, the king of (dharma), having assumed a divine body and being free from enmity and grief, plunged into that water.
ततो ययौ वृतो देवैः कुरुराजो युधिष्ठिरः ।
धर्मेण सहितो धीमान्स्तूयमानो महर्षिभिः ॥४१॥
41. tato yayau vṛto devaiḥ kururājo yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ,
dharmeṇa sahito dhīmānstūyamāno maharṣibhiḥ.
41. tataḥ yayau vṛtaḥ devaiḥ kururājaḥ yudhiṣṭhiraḥ
dharmeṇa sahitaḥ dhīmān stūyamānaḥ maharṣibhiḥ
41. tataḥ dhīmān kururājaḥ yudhiṣṭhiraḥ dharmeṇa
sahitaḥ devaiḥ maharṣibhiḥ stūyamānaḥ yayau
41. Then, the wise king of the Kurus, Yudhiṣṭhira, proceeded, accompanied by his natural law (dharma), surrounded by the gods and praised by the great sages.
