दुर्योधन उवाच ।
अयं ते कर्ण सारथ्यं मद्रराजः करिष्यति ।
कृष्णादभ्यधिको यन्ता देवेन्द्रस्येव मातलिः ॥१॥
1. duryodhana uvāca ,
ayaṁ te karṇa sārathyaṁ madrarājaḥ kariṣyati ,

1. Duryodhana said: "O Karna, this King of Madra will perform the charioteering for you. He is a charioteer superior to Krishna, just as Matali is for the king of the gods (Indra)."
यथा हरिहयैर्युक्तं संगृह्णाति स मातलिः ।
शल्यस्तव तथाद्यायं संयन्ता रथवाजिनाम् ॥२॥
2. yathā harihayairyuktaṁ saṁgṛhṇāti sa mātaliḥ ,
śalyastava tathādyāyaṁ saṁyantā rathavājinām.
2. yathā harihayaiḥ yuktam saṃgṛhṇāti sa mātaliḥ
śalyaḥ tava tathā adya ayam saṃyantā rathavājinām

2. Just as that Matali controls the horses yoked to Indra's chariot, so too this Shalya will be the charioteer of your chariot-horses today.
योधे त्वयि रथस्थे च मद्रराजे च सारथौ ।
रथश्रेष्ठो ध्रुवं संख्ये पार्थो नाभिभविष्यति ॥३॥
3. yodhe tvayi rathasthe ca madrarāje ca sārathau ,
rathaśreṣṭho dhruvaṁ saṁkhye pārtho nābhibhaviṣyati.

3. With you as the warrior mounted on the chariot, and the King of Madra as the charioteer, Arjuna, the foremost of chariot-warriors, will certainly not be able to defeat (you) in battle.
संजय उवाच ।
ततो दुर्योधनो भूयो मद्रराजं तरस्विनम् ।
उवाच राजन्संग्रामे संयच्छन्तं हयोत्तमान् ॥४॥
4. saṁjaya uvāca ,
tato duryodhano bhūyo madrarājaṁ tarasvinam ,
uvāca rājansaṁgrāme saṁyacchantaṁ hayottamān.

4. Sanjaya said: "Then Duryodhana, O King (Dhritarashtra), spoke again to the powerful King of Madra, who was controlling the best horses in battle."
त्वयाभिगुप्तो राधेयो विजेष्यति धनंजयम् ।
इत्युक्तो रथमास्थाय तथेति प्राह भारत ॥५॥
5. tvayābhigupto rādheyo vijeṣyati dhanaṁjayam ,
ityukto rathamāsthāya tatheti prāha bhārata.
5. tvayā abhigūptaḥ rādheyaḥ vijeṣyati dhanañjayam
iti uktaḥ ratham āsthāya tathā iti prāha bhārata

5. “Radheya (Karna), protected by you, will conquer Dhanañjaya (Arjuna).” Having been told this, O descendant of Bharata, (Shalya) mounted the chariot and said, “So be it.”
शल्येऽभ्युपगते कर्णः सारथिं सुमनोऽब्रवीत् ।
स्वं सूत स्यन्दनं मह्यं कल्पयेत्यसकृत्त्वरन् ॥६॥
6. śalye'bhyupagate karṇaḥ sārathiṁ sumano'bravīt ,
svaṁ sūta syandanaṁ mahyaṁ kalpayetyasakṛttvaran.
6. śalye abhyupagate karṇaḥ sārathim sumanaḥ abravīt
svam sūta syandanam mahyam kalpaya iti asakṛt tvaran
6. śalye abhyupagate karṇaḥ sumanaḥ sārathim abravīt

6. When Shalya had assented, Karna, with a cheerful mind, repeatedly urged the charioteer, saying, “O charioteer, prepare my chariot for me!”
ततो जैत्रं रथवरं गन्धर्वनगरोपमम् ।
विधिवत्कल्पितं भर्त्रे जयेत्युक्त्वा न्यवेदयत् ॥७॥
7. tato jaitraṁ rathavaraṁ gandharvanagaropamam ,
vidhivatkalpitaṁ bhartre jayetyuktvā nyavedayat.
7. tataḥ jaitram rathavaram gandharvanagaropamam
vidhivat kalpitam bhartre jaya iti uktvā nyavedayat
7. tataḥ bhartre jaitram gandharvanagaropamam vidhivat

7. Then, having declared “Victory!”, (Shalya) presented the excellent, victorious chariot, which resembled a city of the Gandharvas and had been ritually prepared for his master (Karna).
तं रथं रथिनां श्रेष्ठः कर्णोऽभ्यर्च्य यथाविधि ।
संपादितं ब्रह्मविदा पूर्वमेव पुरोधसा ॥८॥
8. taṁ rathaṁ rathināṁ śreṣṭhaḥ karṇo'bhyarcya yathāvidhi ,
saṁpāditaṁ brahmavidā pūrvameva purodhasā.
8. tam ratham rathinām śreṣṭhaḥ karṇaḥ abhyarcya
yathāvidhi sampāditam brahmavidā pūrvam eva purodhasā

8. The best of charioteers, Karna, having worshipped that chariot according to ritual – that chariot having been prepared beforehand by the chief priest, a knower of brahman (brahman) – ...
कृत्वा प्रदक्षिणं यत्नादुपस्थाय च भास्करम् ।
समीपस्थं मद्रराजं समारोपयदग्रतः ॥९॥
9. kṛtvā pradakṣiṇaṁ yatnādupasthāya ca bhāskaram ,
samīpasthaṁ madrarājaṁ samāropayadagrataḥ.
9. kṛtvā pradakṣiṇam yatnāt upasthāya ca bhāskaram
samīpastham madrarājam samāropayat agrataḥ
9. yatnāt pradakṣiṇam kṛtvā ca bhāskaram upasthāya

9. Having carefully performed a circumambulation and reverently approached the Sun god (bhāskara), he then seated the king of Madra (madrarāja), who was standing nearby, in the front (of the chariot).
ततः कर्णस्य दुर्धर्षं स्यन्दनप्रवरं महत् ।
आरुरोह महातेजाः शल्यः सिंह इवाचलम् ॥१०॥
10. tataḥ karṇasya durdharṣaṁ syandanapravaraṁ mahat ,
āruroha mahātejāḥ śalyaḥ siṁha ivācalam.
10. tataḥ karṇasya durdharṣam syandanapravaram
mahat ārūroha mahātejāḥ śalyaḥ siṃhaḥ iva acalam
10. tataḥ mahātejāḥ śalyaḥ siṃhaḥ acalam iva karṇasya
durdharṣam mahat syandanapravaram ārūroha
10. Then, the highly glorious (mahātejāḥ) Śalya ascended Karṇa's great, invincible (durdharṣam), and excellent chariot, just as a lion ascends a mountain.
ततः शल्यास्थितं राजन्कर्णः स्वरथमुत्तमम् ।
अध्यतिष्ठद्यथाम्भोदं विद्युत्वन्तं दिवाकरः ॥११॥
11. tataḥ śalyāsthitaṁ rājankarṇaḥ svarathamuttamam ,
adhyatiṣṭhadyathāmbhodaṁ vidyutvantaṁ divākaraḥ.
11. tataḥ śalyāsthitam rājan karṇaḥ svaratham uttamam
adhyatiṣṭhat yathā ambhodam vidyutvantam divākaraḥ
11. rājan tataḥ karṇaḥ śalyāsthitam uttamam svaratham adhyatiṣṭhat
yathā divākaraḥ vidyutvantam ambhodam (adhyatiṣṭhati)
11. Then, O king (rājan), Karṇa mounted his own excellent chariot, with Śalya already seated in it, just as the sun (divākaraḥ) ascends a lightning-bearing cloud.
तावेकरथमारूढावादित्याग्निसमत्विषौ ।
व्यभ्राजेतां यथा मेघं सूर्याग्नी सहितौ दिवि ॥१२॥
12. tāvekarathamārūḍhāvādityāgnisamatviṣau ,
vyabhrājetāṁ yathā meghaṁ sūryāgnī sahitau divi.
12. tau ekaratham ārūḍhau ādityāgnisamatviṣau
vyabhrājetām yathā megham sūryāgnī sahitau divi
12. ekaratham ārūḍhau ādityāgnisamatviṣau tau divi
sahitau sūryāgnī megham yathā vyabhrājetām
12. Those two, having ascended a single chariot, and whose splendor was equal to that of the sun and fire, blazed forth in the sky, just as the sun and fire together shine brightly against a cloud.
संस्तूयमानौ तौ वीरौ तदास्तां द्युतिमत्तरौ ।
ऋत्विक्सदस्यैरिन्द्राग्नी हूयमानाविवाध्वरे ॥१३॥
13. saṁstūyamānau tau vīrau tadāstāṁ dyutimattarau ,
ṛtviksadasyairindrāgnī hūyamānāvivādhvare.
13. saṃstūyamānau tau vīrau tadā āstām dyutimattarau
ṛtvik-sadasyaiḥ indrāgnī hūyamānau iva adhvare
13. tadā ṛtvik-sadasyaiḥ adhvare hūyamānau indrāgnī iva,
tau saṃstūyamānau dyutimattarau vīrau āstām
13. Then, those two highly praised heroes appeared most radiant, just like Indra and Agni being invoked by the officiating priests and assembly members during a ritual sacrifice.
स शल्यसंगृहीताश्वे रथे कर्णः स्थितोऽभवत् ।
धनुर्विस्फारयन्घोरं परिवेषीव भास्करः ॥१४॥
14. sa śalyasaṁgṛhītāśve rathe karṇaḥ sthito'bhavat ,
dhanurvisphārayanghoraṁ pariveṣīva bhāskaraḥ.
14. saḥ śalya-saṃgṛhīta-aśve rathe karṇaḥ sthitaḥ abhavat
dhanuḥ visphārayan ghoram pariveṣī iva bhāskaraḥ
14. saḥ karṇaḥ śalya-saṃgṛhīta-aśve rathe sthitaḥ abhavat,
ghoram dhanuḥ visphārayan,
pariveṣī bhāskaraḥ iva
14. Karṇa stood on his chariot, whose horses were guided by Śalya, stretching his formidable bow. He appeared like the sun (bhāskara) encircled by a halo.
आस्थितः स रथश्रेष्ठं कर्णः शरगभस्तिमान् ।
प्रबभौ पुरुषव्याघ्रो मन्दरस्थ इवांशुमान् ॥१५॥
15. āsthitaḥ sa rathaśreṣṭhaṁ karṇaḥ śaragabhastimān ,
prababhau puruṣavyāghro mandarastha ivāṁśumān.
15. āsthitaḥ saḥ ratha-śreṣṭham karṇaḥ śara-gabhastimān
prababhau puruṣa-vyāghraḥ mandara-sthaḥ iva aṃśumān
15. saḥ puruṣa-vyāghraḥ śara-gabhastimān karṇaḥ ratha-śreṣṭham āsthitaḥ prababhau,
mandara-sthaḥ aṃśumān iva
15. Seated upon his excellent chariot, Karṇa, that tiger among men (puruṣavyāghra) and wielder of arrow-rays, shone brilliantly, like the sun (aṃśumān) positioned atop Mount Mandara.
तं रथस्थं महावीरं यान्तं चामिततेजसम् ।
दुर्योधनः स्म राधेयमिदं वचनमब्रवीत् ॥१६॥
16. taṁ rathasthaṁ mahāvīraṁ yāntaṁ cāmitatejasam ,
duryodhanaḥ sma rādheyamidaṁ vacanamabravīt.
16. tam ratha-stham mahā-vīram yāntam ca amita-tejasam
duryodhanaḥ sma rādheyam idam vacanam abravīt
16. duryodhanaḥ,
ratha-stham mahā-vīram yāntam ca amita-tejasam tam rādheyam,
idam vacanam abravīt sma
16. Duryodhana then spoke these words to him, Karṇa (rādheya), the great hero (mahāvīra) who was situated in his chariot and possessed immeasurable splendor (amitatejas).
अकृतं द्रोणभीष्माभ्यां दुष्करं कर्म संयुगे ।
कुरुष्वाधिरथे वीर मिषतां सर्वधन्विनाम् ॥१७॥
17. akṛtaṁ droṇabhīṣmābhyāṁ duṣkaraṁ karma saṁyuge ,
kuruṣvādhirathe vīra miṣatāṁ sarvadhanvinām.
17. akṛtam droṇabhīṣmābhyām duṣkaram karma saṃyuge
kuruṣva ādhīrathe vīra miṣatām sarvadhanvinām
17. vīra ādhīrathe saṃyuge droṇabhīṣmābhyām akṛtam
duṣkaram karma sarvadhanvinām miṣatām kuruṣva
17. O hero, son of Adhiratha (Karna), accomplish in battle that formidable deed (karma) which Drona and Bhishma have not done, while all archers are watching.
मनोगतं मम ह्यासीद्भीष्मद्रोणौ महारथौ ।
अर्जुनं भीमसेनं च निहन्ताराविति ध्रुवम् ॥१८॥
18. manogataṁ mama hyāsīdbhīṣmadroṇau mahārathau ,
arjunaṁ bhīmasenaṁ ca nihantārāviti dhruvam.
18. manogatam mama hi āsīt bhīṣmadroṇau mahārathau
arjunam bhīmasenam ca nihantārau iti dhruvam
18. mama manogatam hi āsīt dhruvam (yat) bhīṣmadroṇau
mahārathau arjunam bhīmasenam ca nihantārau iti
18. Indeed, it was certainly my firm belief (manogatam) that Bhishma and Drona, the great charioteers, would kill Arjuna and Bhimasena.
ताभ्यां यदकृतं वीर वीरकर्म महामृधे ।
तत्कर्म कुरु राधेय वज्रपाणिरिवापरः ॥१९॥
19. tābhyāṁ yadakṛtaṁ vīra vīrakarma mahāmṛdhe ,
tatkarma kuru rādheya vajrapāṇirivāparaḥ.
19. tābhyām yat akṛtam vīra vīrakarma mahāmṛdhe
tat karma kuru rādheya vajrapāṇiḥ iva aparaḥ
19. vīra rādheya mahāmṛdhe tābhyām yat akṛtam
vīrakarma tat karma aparaḥ vajrapāṇiḥ iva kuru
19. O hero, O son of Radha (Karna), perform that heroic deed in the great battle which was not accomplished by them (Drona and Bhishma), like another Vajrapāṇi (Indra).
गृहाण धर्मराजं वा जहि वा त्वं धनंजयम् ।
भीमसेनं च राधेय माद्रीपुत्रौ यमावपि ॥२०॥
20. gṛhāṇa dharmarājaṁ vā jahi vā tvaṁ dhanaṁjayam ,
bhīmasenaṁ ca rādheya mādrīputrau yamāvapi.
20. gṛhāṇa dharmarājam vā jahi vā tvam dhanañjayam
bhīmasenam ca rādheya mādrīputrau yamau api
20. rādheya dharmarājam gṛhāṇa vā tvam dhanañjayam
bhīmasenam ca mādrīputrau yamau api vā jahi
20. O son of Radha (Karna), either capture Dharmaraja (Yudhishthira) or you kill Dhananjaya (Arjuna) and Bhimasena, and also the two sons of Madri (Nakula and Sahadeva), who are like the twin Yamas.
जयश्च तेऽस्तु भद्रं च प्रयाहि पुरुषर्षभ ।
पाण्डुपुत्रस्य सैन्यानि कुरु सर्वाणि भस्मसात् ॥२१॥
21. jayaśca te'stu bhadraṁ ca prayāhi puruṣarṣabha ,
pāṇḍuputrasya sainyāni kuru sarvāṇi bhasmasāt.
21. jayaḥ ca te astu bhadram ca prayāhi puruṣarṣabha
pāṇḍuputrasya sainyāni kuru sarvāṇi bhasmasāt
21. puruṣarṣabha te jayaḥ ca bhadram ca astu prayāhi
pāṇḍuputrasya सर्वाणि sainyāni bhasmasāt kuru
21. May victory and well-being be yours! Go forth, O best among men (puruṣarṣabha)! Turn all the armies of Pandu's son into ashes.
ततस्तूर्यसहस्राणि भेरीणामयुतानि च ।
वाद्यमानान्यरोचन्त मेघशब्दा यथा दिवि ॥२२॥
22. tatastūryasahasrāṇi bherīṇāmayutāni ca ,
vādyamānānyarocanta meghaśabdā yathā divi.
22. tataḥ tūryasahastrāṇi bherīṇām ayutāni ca
vādyamānāni arocenta meghaśabdāḥ yathā divi
22. tataḥ tūryasahastrāṇi ca bherīṇām ayutāni
vādyamānāni divi meghaśabdāḥ yathā arocenta
22. Then, thousands of trumpets and tens of thousands of drums, being played, resounded splendidly, just like thunderclaps in the sky (divi).
प्रतिगृह्य तु तद्वाक्यं रथस्थो रथसत्तमः ।
अभ्यभाषत राधेयः शल्यं युद्धविशारदम् ॥२३॥
23. pratigṛhya tu tadvākyaṁ rathastho rathasattamaḥ ,
abhyabhāṣata rādheyaḥ śalyaṁ yuddhaviśāradam.
23. pratigṛhya tu tat vākyam rathasthaḥ rathasattamaḥ
abhyabhāṣata rādheyaḥ śalyam yuddhaviśāradam
23. tu rādheyaḥ rathasthaḥ rathasattamaḥ tat vākyam
pratigṛhya yuddhaviśāradam śalyam abhyabhāṣata
23. But having received that statement, Radheya (Karna), who was stationed on his chariot and was the best among charioteers (rathasattama), spoke to Salya, who was expert in battle.
चोदयाश्वान्महाबाहो यावद्धन्मि धनंजयम् ।
भीमसेनं यमौ चोभौ राजानं च युधिष्ठिरम् ॥२४॥
24. codayāśvānmahābāho yāvaddhanmi dhanaṁjayam ,
bhīmasenaṁ yamau cobhau rājānaṁ ca yudhiṣṭhiram.
24. codaya aśvān mahābāho yāvat hanmi dhanañjayam
bhīmasenam yamau ca ubhau rājānam ca yudhiṣṭhiram
24. mahābāho aśvān codaya yāvat dhanañjayam bhīmasenam
ca ubhau yamau ca rājānam yudhiṣṭhiram ca hanmi
24. O mighty-armed (mahābāho) one, drive the horses until I kill Dhananjaya, Bhimasena, both the two Yamas (Nakula and Sahadeva), and King Yudhishthira!
अद्य पश्यतु मे शल्य बाहुवीर्यं धनंजयः ।
अस्यतः कङ्कपत्राणां सहस्राणि शतानि च ॥२५॥
25. adya paśyatu me śalya bāhuvīryaṁ dhanaṁjayaḥ ,
asyataḥ kaṅkapatrāṇāṁ sahasrāṇi śatāni ca.
25. adya paśyatu me śalya bāhuvīryam dhanaṃjayaḥ
asyataḥ kaṅkapatrāṇām sahasrāṇi śatāni ca
25. śalya adya dhanaṃjayaḥ asyataḥ kaṅkapatrāṇām
śatāni ca sahasrāṇi me bāhuvīryam paśyatu
25. Today, O Shalya, let Dhananjaya witness the might of my arm as I shoot hundreds and thousands of heron-feathered arrows.
अद्य क्षेप्स्याम्यहं शल्य शरान्परमतेजनान् ।
पाण्डवानां विनाशाय दुर्योधनजयाय च ॥२६॥
26. adya kṣepsyāmyahaṁ śalya śarānparamatejanān ,
pāṇḍavānāṁ vināśāya duryodhanajayāya ca.
26. adya kṣepsyāmi aham śalya śarān paramatejanān
pāṇḍavānām vināśāya duryodhanajayāya ca
26. śalya adya aham pāṇḍavānām vināśāya ca
duryodhanajayāya paramatejanān śarān kṣepsyāmi
26. Today, O Shalya, I shall shoot exceedingly sharp arrows for the destruction of the Pāṇḍavas and for Duryodhana's victory.
शल्य उवाच ।
सूतपुत्र कथं नु त्वं पाण्डवानवमन्यसे ।
सर्वास्त्रज्ञान्महेष्वासान्सर्वानेव महारथान् ॥२७॥
27. śalya uvāca ,
sūtaputra kathaṁ nu tvaṁ pāṇḍavānavamanyase ,
sarvāstrajñānmaheṣvāsānsarvāneva mahārathān.
27. śalya uvāca sūtaputra katham nu tvam pāṇḍavān avamanyase
sarvāstrajñān maheṣvāsān sarvān eva mahārathān
27. śalya uvāca sūtaputra tvam sarvāstrajñān maheṣvāsān
sarvān eva mahārathān pāṇḍavān katham nu avamanyase
27. Shalya said, "O son of Sūta, how can you possibly disrespect the Pāṇḍavas, who are all skilled in every weapon, great archers, and indeed, mighty charioteers?"
अनिवर्तिनो महाभागानजेयान्सत्यविक्रमान् ।
अपि संजनयेयुर्ये भयं साक्षाच्छतक्रतोः ॥२८॥
28. anivartino mahābhāgānajeyānsatyavikramān ,
api saṁjanayeyurye bhayaṁ sākṣācchatakratoḥ.
28. anivartinaḥ mahābhāgān ajeyān satyavikramān
api saṃjanayeyuḥ ye bhayam sākṣāt śatakratoḥ
28. ye anivartinaḥ mahābhāgān ajeyān satyavikramān
[pāṇḍavān] api sākṣāt śatakratoḥ bhayam saṃjanayeyuḥ
28. who are unretreating, greatly endowed, invincible, and truly mighty in valor; indeed, they could inspire fear even in Śatakratu (Indra) himself.
यदा श्रोष्यसि निर्घोषं विस्फूर्जितमिवाशनेः ।
राधेय गाण्डिवस्याजौ तदा नैवं वदिष्यसि ॥२९॥
29. yadā śroṣyasi nirghoṣaṁ visphūrjitamivāśaneḥ ,
rādheya gāṇḍivasyājau tadā naivaṁ vadiṣyasi.
29. yadā śroṣyasi nirghoṣam visphūrjitam iva aśaneḥ
rādheya gāṇḍivasya ājau tadā na evam vadiṣyasi
29. rādheya yadā ājau gāṇḍivasya aśaneḥ iva visphūrjitam
nirghoṣam śroṣyasi tadā evam na vadiṣyasi
29. O son of Rādhā, when you hear the roar of the Gāṇḍīva bow in battle, like the crackling sound of a thunderbolt, then you will not speak in this manner.
संजय उवाच ।
अनादृत्य तु तद्वाक्यं मद्रराजेन भाषितम् ।
द्रक्ष्यस्यद्येत्यवोचद्वै शल्यं कर्णो नरेश्वर ॥३०॥
30. saṁjaya uvāca ,
anādṛtya tu tadvākyaṁ madrarājena bhāṣitam ,
drakṣyasyadyetyavocadvai śalyaṁ karṇo nareśvara.

30. Sañjaya said: O lord of men, Karṇa, having indeed disregarded those words spoken by the king of Madras, Śalya, then said, 'You will see today!'
दृष्ट्वा कर्णं महेष्वासं युयुत्सुं समवस्थितम् ।
चुक्रुशुः कुरवः सर्वे हृष्टरूपाः परंतप ॥३१॥
31. dṛṣṭvā karṇaṁ maheṣvāsaṁ yuyutsuṁ samavasthitam ,
cukruśuḥ kuravaḥ sarve hṛṣṭarūpāḥ paraṁtapa.

31. O tormentor of foes, having seen Karṇa, the great archer, standing firm and eager for battle, all the Kurus, with joyful expressions, roared.
ततो दुन्दुभिघोषेण भेरीणां निनदेन च ।
बाणशब्दैश्च विविधैर्गर्जितैश्च तरस्विनाम् ।
निर्ययुस्तावका युद्धे मृत्युं कृत्वा निवर्तनम् ॥३२॥
32. tato dundubhighoṣeṇa bherīṇāṁ ninadena ca ,
bāṇaśabdaiśca vividhairgarjitaiśca tarasvinām ,
niryayustāvakā yuddhe mṛtyuṁ kṛtvā nivartanam.

32. Then, your men sallied forth into battle, with the sound of war drums and the roar of kettle-drums, and with various sounds of arrows and the roars of the mighty ones, having made death their only retreat.
प्रयाते तु ततः कर्णे योधेषु मुदितेषु च ।
चचाल पृथिवी राजन्ररास च सुविस्वरम् ॥३३॥

33. O King, when Karna had then departed, and the warriors were delighted, the earth trembled and roared with a terrible sound.
निश्चरन्तो व्यदृश्यन्त सूर्यात्सप्त महाग्रहाः ।
उल्कापातश्च संजज्ञे दिशां दाहस्तथैव च ।
तथाशन्यश्च संपेतुर्ववुर्वाताश्च दारुणाः ॥३४॥
34. niścaranto vyadṛśyanta sūryātsapta mahāgrahāḥ ,
ulkāpātaśca saṁjajñe diśāṁ dāhastathaiva ca ,
tathāśanyaśca saṁpeturvavurvātāśca dāruṇāḥ.

34. Seven great celestial bodies were seen emerging from the sun. A shower of meteors occurred, and similarly, the quarters of the sky appeared to be burning. Also, thunderbolts fell, and dreadful winds blew.
मृगपक्षिगणाश्चैव बहुशः पृतनां तव ।
अपसव्यं तदा चक्रुर्वेदयन्तो महद्भयम् ॥३५॥
35. mṛgapakṣigaṇāścaiva bahuśaḥ pṛtanāṁ tava ,
apasavyaṁ tadā cakrurvedayanto mahadbhayam.

35. Then, numerous flocks of deer and birds went around your army in an inauspicious, counter-clockwise direction, indeed indicating a great danger.
प्रस्थितस्य च कर्णस्य निपेतुस्तुरगा भुवि ।
अस्थिवर्षं च पतितमन्तरिक्षाद्भयानकम् ॥३६॥
36. prasthitasya ca karṇasya nipetusturagā bhuvi ,
asthivarṣaṁ ca patitamantarikṣādbhayānakam.

36. And as Karna was departing, his horses fell to the ground. A terrifying shower of bones also fell from the sky.
जज्वलुश्चैव शस्त्राणि ध्वजाश्चैव चकम्पिरे ।
अश्रूणि च व्यमुञ्चन्त वाहनानि विशां पते ॥३७॥
37. jajvaluścaiva śastrāṇi dhvajāścaiva cakampire ,
aśrūṇi ca vyamuñcanta vāhanāni viśāṁ pate.

37. O lord of the people, weapons blazed, flags quivered, and the animals (mounts) shed tears.
एते चान्ये च बहव उत्पातास्तत्र मारिष ।
समुत्पेतुर्विनाशाय कौरवाणां सुदारुणाः ॥३८॥
38. ete cānye ca bahava utpātāstatra māriṣa ,
samutpeturvināśāya kauravāṇāṁ sudāruṇāḥ.

38. O respected one, these and many other extremely dreadful omens appeared there, destined for the destruction of the Kauravas.
न च तान्गणयामासुः सर्वे ते दैवमोहिताः ।
प्रस्थितं सूतपुत्रं च जयेत्यूचुर्नरा भुवि ।
निर्जितान्पाण्डवांश्चैव मेनिरे तव कौरवाः ॥३९॥
39. na ca tāngaṇayāmāsuḥ sarve te daivamohitāḥ ,
prasthitaṁ sūtaputraṁ ca jayetyūcurnarā bhuvi ,
nirjitānpāṇḍavāṁścaiva menire tava kauravāḥ.

jaya iti ūcuḥ narāḥ bhuvi nirjitān

39. However, all of them, deluded by fate, disregarded those (omens). And the people on the battlefield hailed the son of the charioteer (Karṇa) who had set out, crying 'Victory!' Your Kauravas indeed believed the Pandavas to be already conquered.
ततो रथस्थः परवीरहन्ता भीष्मद्रोणावात्तवीर्यौ निरीक्ष्य ।
समज्वलद्भारत पावकाभो वैकर्तनोऽसौ रथकुञ्जरो वृषः ॥४०॥
40. tato rathasthaḥ paravīrahantā; bhīṣmadroṇāvāttavīryau nirīkṣya ,
samajvaladbhārata pāvakābho; vaikartano'sau rathakuñjaro vṛṣaḥ.

40. Then, O descendant of Bharata, that great charioteer (Karṇa), the son of Vikartana, mighty as a bull and a slayer of enemy heroes, observed Bhishma and Drona, whose strength seemed diminished, and he blazed forth like fire from his chariot.
स शल्यमाभाष्य जगाद वाक्यं पार्थस्य कर्माप्रतिमं च दृष्ट्वा ।
मानेन दर्पेण च दह्यमानः क्रोधेन दीप्यन्निव निःश्वसित्वा ॥४१॥
41. sa śalyamābhāṣya jagāda vākyaṁ; pārthasya karmāpratimaṁ ca dṛṣṭvā ,
mānena darpeṇa ca dahyamānaḥ; krodhena dīpyanniva niḥśvasitvā.

41. Tormented by pride and arrogance, and breathing heavily as if aflame with anger, he addressed Shalya and spoke, having witnessed Partha's unparalleled deed (karma).
नाहं महेन्द्रादपि वज्रपाणेः क्रुद्धाद्बिभेम्यात्तधनू रथस्थः ।
दृष्ट्वा तु भीष्मप्रमुखाञ्शयानान्न त्वेव मां स्थिरता संजहाति ॥४२॥
42. nāhaṁ mahendrādapi vajrapāṇeḥ; kruddhādbibhemyāttadhanū rathasthaḥ ,
dṛṣṭvā tu bhīṣmapramukhāñśayānā;nna tveva māṁ sthiratā saṁjahāti.
42. na aham mahendrāt api vajrapāṇeḥ
kruddhāt bibhemi āttadhanū rathasthaḥ
dṛṣṭvā tu bhīṣmapramukhān śayānān
na tu eva mām sthiratā saṃjahāti

42. Standing on my chariot with my bow drawn, I do not fear even the wrathful great Indra, the wielder of the thunderbolt. However, even after seeing Bhishma and other prominent warriors lying (dead), my steadfastness does not abandon me.
महेन्द्रविष्णुप्रतिमावनिन्दितौ रथाश्वनागप्रवरप्रमाथिनौ ।
अवध्यकल्पौ निहतौ यदा परैस्ततो ममाद्यापि रणेऽस्ति साध्वसम् ॥४३॥
43. mahendraviṣṇupratimāvaninditau; rathāśvanāgapravarapramāthinau ,
avadhyakalpau nihatau yadā parai;stato mamādyāpi raṇe'sti sādhvasam.

43. My fear (sādhvasam) still lingers on the battlefield, even today, because those two, who were like the great Indra and Vishnu, blameless, destroyers of the finest chariots, horses, and elephants, and virtually invincible, were killed by the enemies.
समीक्ष्य संख्येऽतिबलान्नराधिपैर्नराश्वमातङ्गरथाञ्शरैर्हतान् ।
कथं न सर्वानहितान्रणेऽवधीन्महास्त्रविद्ब्राह्मणपुंगवो गुरुः ॥४४॥
44. samīkṣya saṁkhye'tibalānnarādhipai;rnarāśvamātaṅgarathāñśarairhatān ,
kathaṁ na sarvānahitānraṇe'vadhī;nmahāstravidbrāhmaṇapuṁgavo guruḥ.

hatān katham na sarvān ahitān raṇe

44. Having observed in battle mighty (forces of) kings, men, horses, elephants, and chariots slain by arrows, how did the teacher (guru), the foremost among Brahmins and a master of great weapons, not kill all the enemies on the battlefield?
स संस्मरन्द्रोणहवं महाहवे ब्रवीमि सत्यं कुरवो निबोधत ।
न वो मदन्यः प्रसहेद्रणेऽर्जुनं क्रमागतं मृत्युमिवोग्ररूपिणम् ॥४५॥
45. sa saṁsmarandroṇahavaṁ mahāhave; bravīmi satyaṁ kuravo nibodhata ,
na vo madanyaḥ prasahedraṇe'rjunaṁ; kramāgataṁ mṛtyumivograrūpiṇam.
45. sa saṃsmaran droṇahavam mahāhave
bravīmi satyam kuravaḥ nibodhata |
na vaḥ matanyaḥ prasahet raṇe arjunaṃ
kramāgatam mṛtyum iva ugrarūpiṇam

sa satyam bravīmi nibodhata vaḥ
raṇe arjunaṃ kramāgatam ugrarūpiṇam
mṛtyum iva matanyaḥ na prasahet
45. Remembering Drona's call to battle (drona-hava) in the great conflict (maha-hava), I speak the truth, O Kurus, understand this: No one among you, apart from myself, can withstand Arjuna in battle, who is like formidable death (mṛtyu) that arrives in its destined time.
शिक्षा प्रसादश्च बलं धृतिश्च द्रोणे महास्त्राणि च संनतिश्च ।
स चेदगान्मृत्युवशं महात्मा सर्वानन्यानातुरानद्य मन्ये ॥४६॥
46. śikṣā prasādaśca balaṁ dhṛtiśca; droṇe mahāstrāṇi ca saṁnatiśca ,
sa cedagānmṛtyuvaśaṁ mahātmā; sarvānanyānāturānadya manye.

46. Discipline, grace, strength, and steadfastness (dhṛti), along with mighty weapons and humility (sannati), were all present in Drona. If that great soul (mahātman) has succumbed to the power of death (mṛtyu), then I consider all others now to be helpless and suffering.
नेह ध्रुवं किंचिदपि प्रचिन्त्यं विदुर्लोके कर्मणोऽनित्ययोगात् ।
सूर्योदये को हि विमुक्तसंशयो गर्वं कुर्वीताद्य गुरौ निपातिते ॥४७॥
47. neha dhruvaṁ kiṁcidapi pracintyaṁ; vidurloke karmaṇo'nityayogāt ,
sūryodaye ko hi vimuktasaṁśayo; garvaṁ kurvītādya gurau nipātite.
47. na iha dhruvam kiñcit api pracintyam
viduḥ loke karmaṇaḥ anityayogāt
| sūryodaye kaḥ hi vimuktasaṃśayaḥ
garvam kurvīta adya gurau nipātite

47. In this world, nothing at all can be considered truly permanent (dhruva), for people know that everything is impermanent due to its connection with action (karma). With the guru now fallen, who indeed, free from all doubt, could feel pride (garva) at the rising of the sun today?
न नूनमस्त्राणि बलं पराक्रमः क्रिया सुनीतं परमायुधानि वा ।
अलं मनुष्यस्य सुखाय वर्तितुं तथा हि युद्धे निहतः परैर्गुरुः ॥४८॥
48. na nūnamastrāṇi balaṁ parākramaḥ; kriyā sunītaṁ paramāyudhāni vā ,
alaṁ manuṣyasya sukhāya vartituṁ; tathā hi yuddhe nihataḥ parairguruḥ.

48. Surely, neither weapons, nor strength, nor valor, nor [ritual] actions, nor excellent policy, nor even ultimate weapons, are sufficient for a person to live happily (sukha); for indeed, the guru has thus been slain by enemies in battle.
हुताशनादित्यसमानतेजसं पराक्रमे विष्णुपुरंदरोपमम् ।
नये बृहस्पत्युशनःसमं सदा न चैनमस्त्रं तदपात्सुदुःसहम् ॥४९॥
49. hutāśanādityasamānatejasaṁ; parākrame viṣṇupuraṁdaropamam ,
naye bṛhaspatyuśanaḥsamaṁ sadā; na cainamastraṁ tadapātsuduḥsaham.

49. Whose brilliance was like fire and the sun, whose prowess was like Viṣṇu and Indra, and whose statesmanship was always like Bṛhaspati and Uśanas - even that exceedingly formidable weapon could not harm him.
संप्रक्रुष्टे रुदितस्त्रीकुमारे पराभूते पौरुषे धार्तराष्ट्रे ।
मया कृत्यमिति जानामि शल्य प्रयाहि तस्माद्द्विषतामनीकम् ॥५०॥
50. saṁprakruṣṭe ruditastrīkumāre; parābhūte pauruṣe dhārtarāṣṭre ,
mayā kṛtyamiti jānāmi śalya; prayāhi tasmāddviṣatāmanīkam.

mayā kṛtyam iti jānāmi śalya prayāhi tasmāt dviṣatām anīkam

50. O Śalya, when the valor of Dhṛtarāṣṭra's son (Duryodhana) is defeated, and weeping women and children cry out loudly, I know that it is my duty. Therefore, go forth to the army of our enemies!
यत्र राजा पाण्डवः सत्यसंधो व्यवस्थितो भीमसेनार्जुनौ च ।
वासुदेवः सृञ्जयाः सात्यकिश्च यमौ च कस्तौ विषहेन्मदन्यः ॥५१॥
51. yatra rājā pāṇḍavaḥ satyasaṁdho; vyavasthito bhīmasenārjunau ca ,
vāsudevaḥ sṛñjayāḥ sātyakiśca; yamau ca kastau viṣahenmadanyaḥ.

51. Where the Pāṇḍava king (Yudhiṣṭhira), true to his pledge (dharma), stands firm, along with Bhīmasena and Arjuna, Vāsudeva (Kṛṣṇa), the Sṛñjayas, Sātyaki, and the two twins (Nakula and Sahadeva) - who among others besides me could withstand them?
तस्मात्क्षिप्रं मद्रपते प्रयाहि रणे पाञ्चालान्पाण्डवान्सृञ्जयांश्च ।
तान्वा हनिष्यामि समेत्य संख्ये यास्यामि वा द्रोणमुखाय मन्ये ॥५२॥
52. tasmātkṣipraṁ madrapate prayāhi; raṇe pāñcālānpāṇḍavānsṛñjayāṁśca ,
tānvā haniṣyāmi sametya saṁkhye; yāsyāmi vā droṇamukhāya manye.

52. Therefore, O King of Madra (Śalya), go quickly into battle! I will either slay those Pāñcālas, Pāṇḍavas, and Sṛñjayas when I encounter them in combat, or I will go to the realm where Droṇa has gone (i.e., die heroically), I believe.
न त्वेवाहं न गमिष्यामि मध्यं तेषां शूराणामिति मा शल्य विद्धि ।
मित्रद्रोहो मर्षणीयो न मेऽयं त्यक्त्वा प्राणाननुयास्यामि द्रोणम् ॥५३॥
53. na tvevāhaṁ na gamiṣyāmi madhyaṁ; teṣāṁ śūrāṇāmiti mā śalya viddhi ,
mitradroho marṣaṇīyo na me'yaṁ; tyaktvā prāṇānanuyāsyāmi droṇam.
53. na tu eva aham na gamiṣyāmi madhyam
teṣām śūrāṇām iti mā śalya viddhi
mitradrohaḥ marṣaṇīyaḥ na me ayam

53. O Śalya, understand this about me: I will certainly not go among those heroes (of the enemy). This betrayal of a friend is not forgivable by me. I will follow Droṇa, abandoning my very life.
प्राज्ञस्य मूढस्य च जीवितान्ते प्राणप्रमोक्षोऽन्तकवक्त्रगस्य ।
अतो विद्वन्नभियास्यामि पार्थं दिष्टं न शक्यं व्यतिवर्तितुं वै ॥५४॥
54. prājñasya mūḍhasya ca jīvitānte; prāṇapramokṣo'ntakavaktragasya ,
ato vidvannabhiyāsyāmi pārthaṁ; diṣṭaṁ na śakyaṁ vyativartituṁ vai.

54. At the end of life, the release of vital breaths (prāṇa) into the mouth of Death (Antaka) occurs for both the wise and the foolish. Therefore, O wise one, I will advance against Pārtha (Arjuna). Indeed, destiny cannot be averted.
कल्याणवृत्तः सततं हि राजन्वैचित्रवीर्यस्य सुतो ममासीत् ।
तस्यार्थसिद्ध्यर्थमहं त्यजामि प्रियान्भोगान्दुस्त्यजं जीवितं च ॥५५॥
55. kalyāṇavṛttaḥ satataṁ hi rāja;nvaicitravīryasya suto mamāsīt ,
tasyārthasiddhyarthamahaṁ tyajāmi; priyānbhogāndustyajaṁ jīvitaṁ ca.

55. Indeed, O King, the son of Vicitravīrya, who always conducted himself virtuously, was (like) my own. Therefore, for the attainment of his goal, I abandon dear pleasures and even my life, which is difficult to give up.
वैयाघ्रचर्माणमकूजनाक्षं हैमत्रिकोशं रजतत्रिवेणुम् ।
रथप्रबर्हं तुरगप्रबर्हैर्युक्तं प्रादान्मह्यमिदं हि रामः ॥५६॥
56. vaiyāghracarmāṇamakūjanākṣaṁ; haimatrikośaṁ rajatatriveṇum ,
rathaprabarhaṁ turagaprabarhai;ryuktaṁ prādānmahyamidaṁ hi rāmaḥ.

56. Indeed, Rāma gave me this excellent chariot, adorned with a tiger-skin cover, possessing noiseless axles, a triple golden casing, and three silver bamboo-shafts, and yoked with excellent horses.
धनूंषि चित्राणि निरीक्ष्य शल्य ध्वजं गदां सायकांश्चोग्ररूपान् ।
असिं च दीप्तं परमायुधं च शङ्खं च शुभ्रं स्वनवन्तमुग्रम् ॥५७॥
57. dhanūṁṣi citrāṇi nirīkṣya śalya; dhvajaṁ gadāṁ sāyakāṁścograrūpān ,
asiṁ ca dīptaṁ paramāyudhaṁ ca; śaṅkhaṁ ca śubhraṁ svanavantamugram.

57. O Shalya, having observed his diverse bows, his banner, his mace, his fearsome arrows, his blazing sword, his supreme weapon, and his bright, resounding, formidable conch shell -
पताकिनं वज्रनिपातनिस्वनं सिताश्वयुक्तं शुभतूणशोभितम् ।
इमं समास्थाय रथं रथर्षभं रणे हनिष्याम्यहमर्जुनं बलात् ॥५८॥
58. patākinaṁ vajranipātanisvanaṁ; sitāśvayuktaṁ śubhatūṇaśobhitam ,
imaṁ samāsthāya rathaṁ ratharṣabhaṁ; raṇe haniṣyāmyahamarjunaṁ balāt.
58. patākinam vajra-nipāta-nisvanam
sita-aśva-yuktam śubha-tūṇa-śobhitam
imam samāsthāya ratham ratharṣabham
raṇe haniṣyāmi aham arjunaṃ balāt
58. (śalya,

58. and having mounted this supreme chariot - which bears a banner, thunders like a falling thunderbolt, is yoked with white horses, and is adorned with beautiful quivers - I will forcibly kill Arjuna in battle.
तं चेन्मृत्युः सर्वहरोऽभिरक्षते सदाप्रमत्तः समरे पाण्डुपुत्रम् ।
तं वा हनिष्यामि समेत्य युद्धे यास्यामि वा भीष्ममुखो यमाय ॥५९॥
59. taṁ cenmṛtyuḥ sarvaharo'bhirakṣate; sadāpramattaḥ samare pāṇḍuputram ,
taṁ vā haniṣyāmi sametya yuddhe; yāsyāmi vā bhīṣmamukho yamāya.
59. tam cet mṛtyuḥ sarva-haraḥ abhirakṣate
sadā-pramattaḥ samare pāṇḍu-putram
tam vā haniṣyāmi sametya yuddhe
yāsyāmi vā bhīṣma-mukhaḥ yamāya
59. cet sarva-haraḥ sadā-pramattaḥ mṛtyuḥ samare tam pāṇḍu-putram abhirakṣate,
vā (aham) tam yuddhe sametya haniṣyāmi,
vā bhīṣma-mukhaḥ (aham) yamāya yāsyāmi.
59. If even all-destroying Death, ever vigilant in battle, protects that son of Pāṇḍu (Arjuna), then I will either kill him after confronting him in battle, or I myself, led by Bhīṣma, will go to Yama (the god of death).
यमवरुणकुबेरवासवा वा यदि युगपत्सगणा महाहवे ।
जुगुपिषव इहैत्य पाण्डवं किमु बहुना सह तैर्जयामि तम् ॥६०॥
60. yamavaruṇakuberavāsavā vā; yadi yugapatsagaṇā mahāhave ,
jugupiṣava ihaitya pāṇḍavaṁ; kimu bahunā saha tairjayāmi tam.
60. yama-varuṇa-kubera-vāsavā vā yadi
yugapat sa-gaṇāḥ mahā-āhave
jugupiṣavaḥ iha etya pāṇḍavam
kimu bahunā saha taiḥ jayāmi tam
60. yadi yama-varuṇa-kubera-vāsavā vā sa-gaṇāḥ jugupiṣavaḥ iha mahā-āhave yugapat pāṇḍavam etya (rakṣanti),
kimu bahunā (vaktavyena)? (aham) taiḥ saha tam jayāmi.
60. Even if Yama, Varuṇa, Kubera, and Indra, along with their retinues, were to come here simultaneously to the great battle, desiring to protect Arjuna, what need is there for much talk? I will conquer him, along with all of them!
इति रणरभसस्य कत्थतस्तदुपनिशम्य वचः स मद्रराट् ।
अवहसदवमन्य वीर्यवान्प्रतिषिषिधे च जगाद चोत्तरम् ॥६१॥
61. iti raṇarabhasasya katthata;stadupaniśamya vacaḥ sa madrarāṭ ,
avahasadavamanya vīryavā;npratiṣiṣidhe ca jagāda cottaram.

61. Hearing these words from him, who was boasting with battle-fury, that mighty king of Madras (Shalya) laughed contemptuously, restrained him, and gave a reply.
विरम विरम कर्ण कत्थनादतिरभसोऽस्यति चाप्ययुक्तवाक् ।
क्व च हि नरवरो धनंजयः क्व पुनरिह त्वमुपारमाबुध ॥६२॥
62. virama virama karṇa katthanā;datirabhaso'syati cāpyayuktavāk ,
kva ca hi naravaro dhanaṁjayaḥ; kva punariha tvamupāramābudha.

62. Stop, stop, Karna, desist from this boasting! You are exceedingly impetuous and your words are inappropriate. Where, indeed, is Dhananjaya (Arjuna), the foremost among men, and where, again, are you here, O ignorant one?
यदुसदनमुपेन्द्रपालितं त्रिदिवमिवामरराजरक्षितम् ।
प्रसभमिह विलोक्य को हरेत्पुरुषवरावरजामृतेऽर्जुनात् ॥६३॥
63. yadusadanamupendrapālitaṁ; tridivamivāmararājarakṣitam ,
prasabhamiha vilokya ko hare;tpuruṣavarāvarajāmṛte'rjunāt.

63. Upon seeing the Yadava capital, which is protected by Upendra (Krishna) just as heaven is guarded by the king of gods (Indra), who here would forcibly seize it, except for Arjuna, the foremost among men and the younger-born?
त्रिभुवनसृजमीश्वरेश्वरं क इह पुमान्भवमाह्वयेद्युधि ।
मृगवधकलहे ऋतेऽर्जुनात्सुरपतिवीर्यसमप्रभावतः ॥६४॥
64. tribhuvanasṛjamīśvareśvaraṁ; ka iha pumānbhavamāhvayedyudhi ,
mṛgavadhakalahe ṛte'rjunā;tsurapativīryasamaprabhāvataḥ.
64. tribhuvanasṛjam īśvareśvaram kaḥ iha pumān bhavam āhvayet
yudhi mṛgavadhakalahe ṛte arjunāt surapativīryasamaprabhāvataḥ

64. Who among men here would challenge Bhava (Shiva), the creator of the three worlds and the lord of lords, in battle, specifically during the dispute over the slain deer, except for Arjuna, whose prowess equals that of the king of gods (Indra)?
असुरसुरमहोरगान्नरान्गरुडपिशाचसयक्षराक्षसान् ।
इषुभिरजयदग्निगौरवात्स्वभिलषितं च हविर्ददौ जयः ॥६५॥
65. asurasuramahoragānnarā;ngaruḍapiśācasayakṣarākṣasān ,
iṣubhirajayadagnigauravā;tsvabhilaṣitaṁ ca havirdadau jayaḥ.

65. Out of reverence for Agni, Jaya conquered with his arrows asuras, suras, great serpents, humans, garudas, piśācas, yakṣas, and rākṣasas, and he offered the desired oblation.
स्मरसि ननु यदा परैर्हृतः स च धृतराष्ट्रसुतो विमोक्षितः ।
दिनकरज नरोत्तमैर्यदा मरुषु बहून्विनिहत्य तानरीन् ॥६६॥
66. smarasi nanu yadā parairhṛtaḥ; sa ca dhṛtarāṣṭrasuto vimokṣitaḥ ,
dinakaraja narottamairyadā; maruṣu bahūnvinihatya tānarīn.

66. Surely you remember, O son of the sun (Karṇa), when that son of Dhṛtarāṣṭra was carried off by enemies and then liberated? (Do you not recall) when the best of men, having thoroughly defeated many of those foes in the desert, (secured his release)?
प्रथममपि पलायिते त्वयि प्रियकलहा धृतराष्ट्रसूनवः ।
स्मरसि ननु यदा प्रमोचिताः खचरगणानवजित्य पाण्डवैः ॥६७॥
67. prathamamapi palāyite tvayi; priyakalahā dhṛtarāṣṭrasūnavaḥ ,
smarasi nanu yadā pramocitāḥ; khacaragaṇānavajitya pāṇḍavaiḥ.

67. Surely you remember, when the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra, who were fond of quarrel, were rescued by the Pāṇḍavas after they had defeated the hosts of sky-dwellers (Gandharvas), even though you had fled first?
समुदितबलवाहनाः पुनः पुरुषवरेण जिताः स्थ गोग्रहे ।
सगुरुगुरुसुताः सभीष्मकाः किमु न जितः स तदा त्वयार्जुनः ॥६८॥
68. samuditabalavāhanāḥ punaḥ; puruṣavareṇa jitāḥ stha gograhe ,
sagurugurusutāḥ sabhīṣmakāḥ; kimu na jitaḥ sa tadā tvayārjunaḥ.

68. Furthermore, when you, with your assembled forces and vehicles, including your preceptors and their sons, and Bhīṣma, were defeated in the cattle raid by the best of men, why then was that Arjuna not conquered by you?
इदमपरमुपस्थितं पुनस्तव निधनाय सुयुद्धमद्य वै ।
यदि न रिपुभयात्पलायसे समरगतोऽद्य हतोऽसि सूतज ॥६९॥
69. idamaparamupasthitaṁ puna;stava nidhanāya suyuddhamadya vai ,
yadi na ripubhayātpalāyase; samaragato'dya hato'si sūtaja.

69. Indeed, another great battle has come upon you again today, for your destruction. O son of a charioteer, if you do not flee out of fear of the enemy, then, having entered this battle today, you will surely be killed.
संजय उवाच ।
इति बहुपरुषं प्रभाषति प्रमनसि मद्रपतौ रिपुस्तवम् ।
भृशमतिरुषितः परं वृषः कुरुपृतनापतिराह मद्रपम् ॥७०॥
70. saṁjaya uvāca ,
iti bahuparuṣaṁ prabhāṣati; pramanasi madrapatau ripustavam ,
bhṛśamatiruṣitaḥ paraṁ vṛṣaḥ; kurupṛtanāpatirāha madrapam.

prabhāṣati pra-manasi madra-patau
ripu-stavam bhṛśam ati-ruṣitaḥ param
vṛṣaḥ kuru-pṛtanā-patiḥ āha madra-pam

70. Sañjaya said: As the King of Madra, his mind agitated, was thus speaking many harsh words and praising the enemy, Karna (Vṛṣa), the commander of the Kuru army, became exceedingly enraged and then spoke to the King of Madra.
भवतु भवतु किं विकत्थसे ननु मम तस्य च युद्धमुद्यतम् ।
यदि स जयति मां महाहवे तत इदमस्तु सुकत्थितं तव ॥७१॥
71. bhavatu bhavatu kiṁ vikatthase; nanu mama tasya ca yuddhamudyatam ,
yadi sa jayati māṁ mahāhave; tata idamastu sukatthitaṁ tava.

nanu mama tasya ca yuddham udyatam
yadi sa jayati mām mahā-have
tataḥ idam astu su-katthitam tava

71. Enough, enough! Why do you keep boasting? Indeed, the battle between him and me is at hand. If he (Arjuna) defeats me in the great battle, then your boasting will truly be considered well-said.
एवमस्त्विति मद्रेश उक्त्वा नोत्तरमुक्तवान् ।
याहि मद्रेश चाप्येनं कर्णः प्राह युयुत्सया ॥७२॥
72. evamastviti madreśa uktvā nottaramuktavān ,
yāhi madreśa cāpyenaṁ karṇaḥ prāha yuyutsayā.
72. evam astu iti madreśa uktvā na uttaram uktavān
yāhi madreśa ca api enam karṇaḥ prāha yuyutsayā

72. Having said, 'So be it,' the King of Madra gave no further reply. Then Karna, with a strong desire to fight, said to him, 'Proceed, O King of Madra!'
स रथः प्रययौ शत्रूञ्श्वेताश्वः शल्यसारथिः ।
निघ्नन्नमित्रान्समरे तमो घ्नन्सविता यथा ॥७३॥
73. sa rathaḥ prayayau śatrūñśvetāśvaḥ śalyasārathiḥ ,
nighnannamitrānsamare tamo ghnansavitā yathā.
73. saḥ rathaḥ prayayau śatrūn śvetāśvaḥ śalyasārathiḥ
nighnan amitrān samare tamaḥ ghnnan savitā yathā
73. saḥ rathaḥ śvetāśvaḥ śalyasārathiḥ samare amitrān nighnan śatrūn prayayau,
yathā savitā tamaḥ ghnnan.
73. That chariot, with its white horses and Shalya as charioteer, proceeded against the enemies in battle, striking down foes, just as the sun destroys darkness.
ततः प्रायात्प्रीतिमान्वै रथेन वैयाघ्रेण श्वेतयुजाथ कर्णः ।
स चालोक्य ध्वजिनीं पाण्डवानां धनंजयं त्वरया पर्यपृच्छत् ॥७४॥
74. tataḥ prāyātprītimānvai rathena; vaiyāghreṇa śvetayujātha karṇaḥ ,
sa cālokya dhvajinīṁ pāṇḍavānāṁ; dhanaṁjayaṁ tvarayā paryapṛcchat.

74. Then, indeed, Karna, joyful, proceeded by his tiger-emblazoned chariot, yoked with white horses. And observing the army of the Pandavas, he quickly questioned Dhananjaya (Arjuna).
