वैशंपायन उवाच ।
तस्य तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा प्रज्ञावृद्धो महाद्युतिः ।
संपूज्यैनं यथाकालं भीष्मो वचनमब्रवीत् ॥१॥
1. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
tasya tadvacanaṁ śrutvā prajñāvṛddho mahādyutiḥ ,
saṁpūjyainaṁ yathākālaṁ bhīṣmo vacanamabravīt.
1. vaiśampāyanaḥ uvāca tasya tat vacanam śrutvā prajñāvṛddhaḥ
mahādyutiḥ sampūjya enam yathākālam bhīṣmaḥ vacanam abravīt
1. Vaishampayana said: Having heard his words, the greatly radiant Bhishma, who was advanced in wisdom, honored him appropriately and then spoke these words.
दिष्ट्या कुशलिनः सर्वे पाण्डवाः सह बान्धवैः ।
दिष्ट्या सहायवन्तश्च दिष्ट्या धर्मे च ते रताः ॥२॥
2. diṣṭyā kuśalinaḥ sarve pāṇḍavāḥ saha bāndhavaiḥ ,
diṣṭyā sahāyavantaśca diṣṭyā dharme ca te ratāḥ.
2. diṣṭyā kuśalinaḥ sarve pāṇḍavāḥ saha bāndhavaiḥ
diṣṭyā sahāyavantaḥ ca diṣṭyā dharme ca te ratāḥ
2. Fortunately, all the Pandavas, along with their relatives, are safe and well. Fortunately, they have allies, and fortunately, they are devoted to natural law (dharma).
दिष्ट्या च संधिकामास्ते भ्रातरः कुरुनन्दनाः ।
दिष्ट्या न युद्धमनसः सह दामोदरेण ते ॥३॥
3. diṣṭyā ca saṁdhikāmāste bhrātaraḥ kurunandanāḥ ,
diṣṭyā na yuddhamanasaḥ saha dāmodareṇa te.
3. diṣṭyā ca saṃdhikāmāḥ te bhrātaraḥ kurunandanāḥ
diṣṭyā na yuddhamanasaḥ saha dāmodareṇa te
3. Fortunately, those brothers, the Kuru princes, desire peace. Fortunately, they, along with Dāmodara (Kṛṣṇa), are not inclined towards war.
भवता सत्यमुक्तं च सर्वमेतन्न संशयः ।
अतितीक्ष्णं तु ते वाक्यं ब्राह्मण्यादिति मे मतिः ॥४॥
4. bhavatā satyamuktaṁ ca sarvametanna saṁśayaḥ ,
atitīkṣṇaṁ tu te vākyaṁ brāhmaṇyāditi me matiḥ.
4. bhavatā satyam uktam ca sarvam etat na saṃśayaḥ
atitīkṣṇam tu te vākyam brāhmaṇyāt iti me matiḥ
4. Everything you have said is true, of this there is no doubt. But your words are exceedingly harsh, in my opinion, due to your brahminical nature.
असंशयं क्लेशितास्ते वने चेह च पाण्डवाः ।
प्राप्ताश्च धर्मतः सर्वं पितुर्धनमसंशयम् ॥५॥
5. asaṁśayaṁ kleśitāste vane ceha ca pāṇḍavāḥ ,
prāptāśca dharmataḥ sarvaṁ piturdhanamasaṁśayam.
5. asaṃśayam kleśitāḥ te vane ca iha ca pāṇḍavāḥ
prāptāḥ ca dharmataḥ sarvam pituḥ dhanam asaṃśayam
5. Certainly, the Pāṇḍavas were tormented in the forest and even here (in this present situation). And undoubtedly, they have rightfully (dharma) obtained all of their father's wealth.
किरीटी बलवान्पार्थः कृतास्त्रश्च महाबलः ।
को हि पाण्डुसुतं युद्धे विषहेत धनंजयम् ॥६॥
6. kirīṭī balavānpārthaḥ kṛtāstraśca mahābalaḥ ,
ko hi pāṇḍusutaṁ yuddhe viṣaheta dhanaṁjayam.
6. kirīṭī balavān pārthaḥ kṛtāstraḥ ca mahābalaḥ
kaḥ hi pāṇḍusutam yuddhe viṣaheta dhanañjayam
6. Arjuna (Kirīṭī), the son of Pṛthā, is mighty, skilled in weaponry, and immensely powerful. Who indeed could withstand Dhanañjaya, the son of Pāṇḍu, in battle?
अपि वज्रधरः साक्षात्किमुतान्ये धनुर्भृतः ।
त्रयाणामपि लोकानां समर्थ इति मे मतिः ॥७॥
7. api vajradharaḥ sākṣātkimutānye dhanurbhṛtaḥ ,
trayāṇāmapi lokānāṁ samartha iti me matiḥ.
7. api vajradharaḥ sākṣāt kim uta anye dhanurbhṛtaḥ
trayāṇām api lokānām samarthaḥ iti me matiḥ
7. My conviction is that he is capable of facing even the three worlds, let alone other bow-wielders, even if the thunderbolt-wielder (Vajradhara) himself were directly present.
भीष्मे ब्रुवति तद्वाक्यं धृष्टमाक्षिप्य मन्युमान् ।
दुर्योधनं समालोक्य कर्णो वचनमब्रवीत् ॥८॥
8. bhīṣme bruvati tadvākyaṁ dhṛṣṭamākṣipya manyumān ,
duryodhanaṁ samālokya karṇo vacanamabravīt.
8. bhīṣme bruvati tat vākyam dhṛṣṭam ākṣipya manyumān
duryodhanam samālokya karṇaḥ vacanam abravīt
8. While Bhishma was uttering that statement, Karna, filled with wrath, boldly rejected it, and looking at Duryodhana, he spoke these words.
न तन्न विदितं ब्रह्मँल्लोके भूतेन केनचित् ।
पुनरुक्तेन किं तेन भाषितेन पुनः पुनः ॥९॥
9. na tanna viditaṁ brahmaँlloke bhūtena kenacit ,
punaruktena kiṁ tena bhāṣitena punaḥ punaḥ.
9. na tat na viditam brahman loke bhūtena kenacit
punaruktena kim tena bhāṣitena punaḥ punaḥ
9. O Brahmin, that is not unknown to any being in the world. What is the use of repeating that, of speaking it again and again?
दुर्योधनार्थे शकुनिर्द्यूते निर्जितवान्पुरा ।
समयेन गतोऽरण्यं पाण्डुपुत्रो युधिष्ठिरः ॥१०॥
10. duryodhanārthe śakunirdyūte nirjitavānpurā ,
samayena gato'raṇyaṁ pāṇḍuputro yudhiṣṭhiraḥ.
10. duryodhanārthe śakuniḥ dyūte nirjitavān purā
samayena gataḥ araṇyam pāṇḍuputraḥ yudhiṣṭhiraḥ
10. Formerly, for Duryodhana's sake, Shakuni defeated (them) in the dice game. According to the agreement, Yudhishthira, the son of Pandu, went to the forest.
न तं समयमादृत्य राज्यमिच्छति पैतृकम् ।
बलमाश्रित्य मत्स्यानां पाञ्चालानां च पार्थिवः ॥११॥
11. na taṁ samayamādṛtya rājyamicchati paitṛkam ,
balamāśritya matsyānāṁ pāñcālānāṁ ca pārthivaḥ.
11. na tam samayam ādṛtya rājyam icchati paitṛkam
balam āśritya matsyānām pāñcālānām ca pārthivaḥ
11. The king (Duryodhana) does not desire the ancestral kingdom by adhering to that agreement. Instead, he relies on the strength of the Matsyas and Pañcālas.
दुर्योधनो भयाद्विद्वन्न दद्यात्पदमन्ततः ।
धर्मतस्तु महीं कृत्स्नां प्रदद्याच्छत्रवेऽपि च ॥१२॥
12. duryodhano bhayādvidvanna dadyātpadamantataḥ ,
dharmatastu mahīṁ kṛtsnāṁ pradadyācchatrave'pi ca.
12. duryodhanaḥ bhayāt vidvan na dadyāt padam antataḥ
dharmataḥ tu mahīm kṛtsnām pradadyāt śatrave api ca
12. O learned one, Duryodhana would not yield an inch, even ultimately, out of fear. But according to (natural) law (dharma), he would readily give the entire earth, even to an enemy.
यदि काङ्क्षन्ति ते राज्यं पितृपैतामहं पुनः ।
यथाप्रतिज्ञं कालं तं चरन्तु वनमाश्रिताः ॥१३॥
13. yadi kāṅkṣanti te rājyaṁ pitṛpaitāmahaṁ punaḥ ,
yathāpratijñaṁ kālaṁ taṁ carantu vanamāśritāḥ.
13. yadi kāṅkṣanti te rājyam pitṛpaitāmaham punaḥ
yathāpratijñam kālam tam carantu vanam āśritāḥ
13. If they (the Pāṇḍavas) desire that ancestral kingdom again, then let them fulfill that promised period by dwelling in the forest.
ततो दुर्योधनस्याङ्के वर्तन्तामकुतोभयाः ।
अधार्मिकामिमां बुद्धिं कुर्युर्मौर्ख्याद्धि केवलम् ॥१४॥
14. tato duryodhanasyāṅke vartantāmakutobhayāḥ ,
adhārmikāmimāṁ buddhiṁ kuryurmaurkhyāddhi kevalam.
14. tataḥ duryodhanasya aṅke vartantām akutobhayāḥ
adhārmikām imām buddhim kuryuḥ maurklyāt hi kevalam
14. Then, let them remain without fear under Duryodhana's protection. Indeed, they would adopt this unrighteous intention (desiring the kingdom) only out of sheer foolishness.
अथ ते धर्ममुत्सृज्य युद्धमिच्छन्ति पाण्डवाः ।
आसाद्येमान्कुरुश्रेष्ठान्स्मरिष्यन्ति वचो मम ॥१५॥
15. atha te dharmamutsṛjya yuddhamicchanti pāṇḍavāḥ ,
āsādyemānkuruśreṣṭhānsmariṣyanti vaco mama.
15. atha te dharmam utsṛjya yuddham icchanti pāṇḍavāḥ
āsādya imān kuruśreṣṭhān smariṣyanti vacaḥ mama
15. Now, having abandoned their proper conduct (dharma), the Pāṇḍavas desire battle. When they encounter these best among the Kurus, they will surely remember my words.
भीष्म उवाच ।
किं नु राधेय वाचा ते कर्म तत्स्मर्तुमर्हसि ।
एक एव यदा पार्थः षड्रथाञ्जितवान्युधि ॥१६॥
16. bhīṣma uvāca ,
kiṁ nu rādheya vācā te karma tatsmartumarhasi ,
eka eva yadā pārthaḥ ṣaḍrathāñjitavānyudhi.
16. bhīṣma uvāca kim nu rādheya vācā te karma tat smartum
arhasi ekaḥ eva yadā pārthaḥ ṣaḍrathān jitavān yudhi
16. Bhīṣma said: O son of Rādhā, why indeed do you speak thus? You should remember that deed (karma) when Arjuna alone conquered six charioteers in battle.
न चेदेवं करिष्यामो यदयं ब्राह्मणोऽब्रवीत् ।
ध्रुवं युधि हतास्तेन भक्षयिष्याम पांसुकान् ॥१७॥
17. na cedevaṁ kariṣyāmo yadayaṁ brāhmaṇo'bravīt ,
dhruvaṁ yudhi hatāstena bhakṣayiṣyāma pāṁsukān.
17. na cet evam kariṣyāmaḥ yat ayam brāhmaṇaḥ abravīt
dhruvam yudhi hatāḥ tena bhakṣayiṣyāma pāṃsukān
17. If we do not act according to what this Brahmin has said, then surely we will be slain by him in battle and consume dust (i.e., suffer utter defeat).
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
धृतराष्ट्रस्ततो भीष्ममनुमान्य प्रसाद्य च ।
अवभर्त्स्य च राधेयमिदं वचनमब्रवीत् ॥१८॥
18. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
dhṛtarāṣṭrastato bhīṣmamanumānya prasādya ca ,
avabhartsya ca rādheyamidaṁ vacanamabravīt.
18. vaiśaṃpāyana uvāca dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ tataḥ bhīṣmam anumānya
prasādya ca avabhartsya ca rādheyam idam vacanam abravīt
18. Vaiśaṃpāyana said: Thereupon, Dhṛtarāṣṭra, having shown respect and appeased Bhīṣma, and also having reprimanded Karṇa, spoke these words.
अस्मद्धितमिदं वाक्यं भीष्मः शांतनवोऽब्रवीत् ।
पाण्डवानां हितं चैव सर्वस्य जगतस्तथा ॥१९॥
19. asmaddhitamidaṁ vākyaṁ bhīṣmaḥ śāṁtanavo'bravīt ,
pāṇḍavānāṁ hitaṁ caiva sarvasya jagatastathā.
19. asmaddhitam idam vākyam bhīṣmaḥ śāntanavaḥ abravīt
pāṇḍavānām hitam ca eva sarvasya jagataḥ tathā
19. Bhishma, the son of Shantanu, spoke this statement, which is beneficial to us, and indeed likewise beneficial to the Pandavas and to all the world.
चिन्तयित्वा तु पार्थेभ्यः प्रेषयिष्यामि संजयम् ।
स भवान्प्रतियात्वद्य पाण्डवानेव माचिरम् ॥२०॥
20. cintayitvā tu pārthebhyaḥ preṣayiṣyāmi saṁjayam ,
sa bhavānpratiyātvadya pāṇḍavāneva māciram.
20. cintayitvā tu pārthebhyaḥ preṣayiṣyāmi saṃjayam
saḥ bhavān pratiyātu adya pāṇḍavān eva mā ciram
20. After reflecting on this, I will send Sanjaya to the sons of Pritha (Pandavas). Your Honor, Sanjaya, should return to the Pandavas immediately, without delay.
स तं सत्कृत्य कौरव्यः प्रेषयामास पाण्डवान् ।
सभामध्ये समाहूय संजयं वाक्यमब्रवीत् ॥२१॥
21. sa taṁ satkṛtya kauravyaḥ preṣayāmāsa pāṇḍavān ,
sabhāmadhye samāhūya saṁjayaṁ vākyamabravīt.
21. saḥ tam satkṛtya kauravyaḥ preṣayāmāsa pāṇḍavān
sabhāmadhye samāhūya saṃjayam vākyam abravīt
21. The Kaurava (Dhritarashtra), having honored Sanjaya, sent him to the Pandavas. Summoning Sanjaya in the assembly, he spoke these words.
