संजय उवाच ।
एतच्छ्रुत्वा वचो राज्ञो मद्रराजः प्रतापवान् ।
दुर्योधनं तदा राजन्वाक्यमेतदुवाच ह ॥१॥
1. saṁjaya uvāca ,
etacchrutvā vaco rājño madrarājaḥ pratāpavān ,
duryodhanaṁ tadā rājanvākyametaduvāca ha.

1. saṃjaya uvāca rājan,

duryodhanaṃ etat vākyam uvāca ha.
1. Sanjaya said: O King, having heard these words of the king, the powerful king of Madra then spoke this statement to Duryodhana.
दुर्योधन महाबाहो शृणु वाक्यविदां वर ।
यावेतौ मन्यसे कृष्णौ रथस्थौ रथिनां वरौ ।
न मे तुल्यावुभावेतौ बाहुवीर्ये कथंचन ॥२॥
2. duryodhana mahābāho śṛṇu vākyavidāṁ vara ,
yāvetau manyase kṛṣṇau rathasthau rathināṁ varau ,
na me tulyāvubhāvetau bāhuvīrye kathaṁcana.

vākyavidāṃ vara,

yau etau kṛṣṇau rathasthau rathināṃ varau (iti tvaṃ) manyase,
etau ubhau me bāhuvīrye kathaṃcana na tulyau (staḥ).
2. O Duryodhana, mighty-armed one, best among those who know words, listen! These two Kṛṣṇas, whom you consider to be the best of charioteers standing on chariots, these two are in no way equal to me in the strength of their arms.
उद्यतां पृथिवीं सर्वां ससुरासुरमानवाम् ।
योधयेयं रणमुखे संक्रुद्धः किमु पाण्डवान् ।
विजेष्ये च रणे पार्थान्सोमकांश्च समागतान् ॥३॥
3. udyatāṁ pṛthivīṁ sarvāṁ sasurāsuramānavām ,
yodhayeyaṁ raṇamukhe saṁkruddhaḥ kimu pāṇḍavān ,
vijeṣye ca raṇe pārthānsomakāṁśca samāgatān.
3. udyatāṃ pṛthivīṃ sarvāṃ
sa-sura-asura-mānavām yodhayeyaṃ raṇamukhe
saṃkruddhaḥ kimu pāṇḍavān vijeṣye ca
raṇe pārthān somakān ca samāgatān
3. saṃkruddhaḥ (aham) raṇamukhe udyatāṃ sarvāṃ sa-sura-asura-mānavām pṛthivīṃ yodhayeyaṃ,
kimu pāṇḍavān? ca raṇe samāgatān pārthān somakān ca vijeṣye.
3. Even if greatly enraged, I could fight the entire earth, including gods, asuras, and humans, at the forefront of battle; how much more so the Pāṇḍavas? And in battle, I will conquer the Pārthas (Arjuna and his brothers) and the Somakas who have assembled.
अहं सेनाप्रणेता ते भविष्यामि न संशयः ।
तं च व्यूहं विधास्यामि न तरिष्यन्ति यं परे ।
इति सत्यं ब्रवीम्येष दुर्योधन न संशयः ॥४॥
4. ahaṁ senāpraṇetā te bhaviṣyāmi na saṁśayaḥ ,
taṁ ca vyūhaṁ vidhāsyāmi na tariṣyanti yaṁ pare ,
iti satyaṁ bravīmyeṣa duryodhana na saṁśayaḥ.
4. ahaṃ senāpraṇetā te bhaviṣyāmi na
saṃśayaḥ taṃ ca vyūhaṃ vidhāsyāmi
na tariṣyanti yaṃ pare iti satyaṃ
bravīmi eṣaḥ duryodhana na saṃśayaḥ
4. ahaṃ te senāpraṇetā bhaviṣyāmi,
na saṃśayaḥ.
ca taṃ vyūhaṃ vidhāsyāmi yaṃ pare na tariṣyanti.
eṣaḥ iti satyaṃ bravīmi,
duryodhana,
na saṃśayaḥ.
4. I will be your army commander, without a doubt. And I will arrange such a battle formation (vyūha) that others will not be able to overcome. This truth I speak, O Duryodhana, there is no doubt.
एवमुक्तस्ततो राजा मद्राधिपतिमञ्जसा ।
अभ्यषिञ्चत सेनाया मध्ये भरतसत्तम ।
विधिना शास्त्रदृष्टेन हृष्टरूपो विशां पते ॥५॥
5. evamuktastato rājā madrādhipatimañjasā ,
abhyaṣiñcata senāyā madhye bharatasattama ,
vidhinā śāstradṛṣṭena hṛṣṭarūpo viśāṁ pate.
5. evam uktaḥ tataḥ rājā madrādhipatim
añjasā abhyaṣiñcata senāyāḥ
madhye bharatasattama vidhinā
śāstradṛṣṭena hṛṣṭarūpaḥ viśām pate
5. bharatasattama viśām pate evam

madrādhipatim añjasā abhyaṣiñcata
5. O best among the Bharatas, O lord of men, thus addressed, the king (Duryodhana) then swiftly consecrated the lord of Madras (Shalya) in the midst of the army, with a joyful demeanor, according to the method prescribed by the sacred texts (śāstra).
अभिषिक्ते ततस्तस्मिन्सिंहनादो महानभूत् ।
तव सैन्येष्ववाद्यन्त वादित्राणि च भारत ॥६॥
6. abhiṣikte tatastasminsiṁhanādo mahānabhūt ,
tava sainyeṣvavādyanta vāditrāṇi ca bhārata.
6. abhiṣikte tataḥ tasmin siṃhanādaḥ mahān abhūt
tava sainyeṣu avādyanta vāditrāṇi ca bhārata
6. bhārata tasmin abhiṣikte tataḥ mahān siṃhanādaḥ
abhūt ca tava sainyeṣu vāditrāṇi avādyanta
6. O Bharata, when he was consecrated, a great lion's roar (siṃhanāda) arose, and musical instruments were sounded in your armies.
हृष्टाश्चासंस्तदा योधा मद्रकाश्च महारथाः ।
तुष्टुवुश्चैव राजानं शल्यमाहवशोभिनम् ॥७॥
7. hṛṣṭāścāsaṁstadā yodhā madrakāśca mahārathāḥ ,
tuṣṭuvuścaiva rājānaṁ śalyamāhavaśobhinam.
7. hṛṣṭāḥ ca āsan tadā yodhāḥ madrakāḥ ca mahārathāḥ
tuṣṭuvuḥ ca eva rājānam śalyam āhavśobhinam
7. tadā yodhāḥ ca madrakāḥ ca mahārathāḥ hṛṣṭāḥ
āsan ca eva āhavśobhinam rājānam śalyam tuṣṭuvuḥ
7. And then, the warriors and the great charioteers (mahārathas) from Madra were delighted. Indeed, they praised King Shalya, who shone splendidly in battle.
जय राजंश्चिरं जीव जहि शत्रून्समागतान् ।
तव बाहुबलं प्राप्य धार्तराष्ट्रा महाबलाः ।
निखिलां पृथिवीं सर्वां प्रशासन्तु हतद्विषः ॥८॥
8. jaya rājaṁściraṁ jīva jahi śatrūnsamāgatān ,
tava bāhubalaṁ prāpya dhārtarāṣṭrā mahābalāḥ ,
nikhilāṁ pṛthivīṁ sarvāṁ praśāsantu hatadviṣaḥ.
8. jaya rājan ciram jīva jahi śatrūn
samāgatān tava bāhubalam prāpya
dhārtarāṣṭrāḥ mahābalāḥ nikhilām
pṛthivīm sarvām praśāsantu hatadviṣaḥ
8. rājan jaya ciram jīva samāgatān
śatrūn jahi tava bāhubalam prāpya
mahābalāḥ hatadviṣaḥ dhārtarāṣṭrāḥ
nikhilām sarvām pṛthivīm praśāsantu
8. Be victorious, O king! Live long! Conquer all the assembled enemies! Having attained your mighty arm-strength, let the powerful sons of Dhritarashtra (Dhārtarāṣṭras) rule the entire earth, having slain their foes.
त्वं हि शक्तो रणे जेतुं ससुरासुरमानवान् ।
मर्त्यधर्माण इह तु किमु सोमकसृञ्जयान् ॥९॥
9. tvaṁ hi śakto raṇe jetuṁ sasurāsuramānavān ,
martyadharmāṇa iha tu kimu somakasṛñjayān.
9. tvam hi śaktaḥ raṇe jetum sasurāsuramānavān
martyadharmāṇaḥ iha tu kimu somakasṛñjayān
9. tvam hi raṇe sasurāsuramānavān jetum śaktaḥ
iha tu martyadharmāṇaḥ somakasṛñjayān kimu
9. Indeed, you are capable of conquering in battle even gods, asuras, and humans. So what then of these Somakas and Sṛñjayas here, who possess a mortal nature?
एवं संस्तूयमानस्तु मद्राणामधिपो बली ।
हर्षं प्राप तदा वीरो दुरापमकृतात्मभिः ॥१०॥
10. evaṁ saṁstūyamānastu madrāṇāmadhipo balī ,
harṣaṁ prāpa tadā vīro durāpamakṛtātmabhiḥ.
10. evam saṃstūyamānaḥ tu madrāṇām adhipaḥ balī
harṣam prāpa tadā vīraḥ durāpam akṛtātmabhiḥ
10. evam saṃstūyamānaḥ tu balī madrāṇām adhipaḥ
vīraḥ tadā akṛtātmabhiḥ durāpam harṣam prāpa
10. Being thus praised, that powerful hero, the lord of the Madras, then attained a joy difficult for those with uncultivated selves (ātman) to achieve.
शल्य उवाच ।
अद्यैवाहं रणे सर्वान्पाञ्चालान्सह पाण्डवैः ।
निहनिष्यामि राजेन्द्र स्वर्गं यास्यामि वा हतः ॥११॥
11. śalya uvāca ,
adyaivāhaṁ raṇe sarvānpāñcālānsaha pāṇḍavaiḥ ,
nihaniṣyāmi rājendra svargaṁ yāsyāmi vā hataḥ.
11. śalyaḥ uvāca adya eva aham raṇe sarvān pāñcālān saha
pāṇḍavaiḥ nihaniṣyāmi rājendra svargam yāsyāmi vā hataḥ
11. śalyaḥ uvāca rājendra adya eva aham raṇe sarvān pāñcālān
pāṇḍavaiḥ saha nihaniṣyāmi vā hataḥ svargam yāsyāmi
11. Śalya said: 'O King, today itself I will either slay all the Pāñcālas along with the Pāṇḍavas in battle, or, if killed, I will go to heaven.'
अद्य पश्यन्तु मां लोका विचरन्तमभीतवत् ।
अद्य पाण्डुसुताः सर्वे वासुदेवः ससात्यकिः ॥१२॥
12. adya paśyantu māṁ lokā vicarantamabhītavat ,
adya pāṇḍusutāḥ sarve vāsudevaḥ sasātyakiḥ.
12. adya paśyantu mām lokāḥ vicarantam abhītavat
adya pāṇḍusutāḥ sarve vāsudevaḥ sasātyakiḥ
12. adya lokāḥ mām abhītavat vicarantam paśyantu
adya sarve pāṇḍusutāḥ vāsudevaḥ sasātyakiḥ
12. Today, let the people behold me moving fearlessly; today, let them also behold all the sons of Pāṇḍu, Vāsudeva, along with Sātyaki.
पाञ्चालाश्चेदयश्चैव द्रौपदेयाश्च सर्वशः ।
धृष्टद्युम्नः शिखण्डी च सर्वे चापि प्रभद्रकाः ॥१३॥
13. pāñcālāścedayaścaiva draupadeyāśca sarvaśaḥ ,
dhṛṣṭadyumnaḥ śikhaṇḍī ca sarve cāpi prabhadrakāḥ.
13. pāñcālāḥ ca cedayāḥ ca eva draupadeyāḥ ca sarvaśaḥ
dhṛṣṭadyumnaḥ śikhaṇḍī ca sarve ca api prabhadrakāḥ
13. pāñcālāḥ cedayāḥ ca eva draupadeyāḥ ca sarvaśaḥ
dhṛṣṭadyumnaḥ śikhaṇḍī ca sarve ca api prabhadrakāḥ
13. And also the Panchalas, the Chedis, and completely all the sons of Draupadi (Draupadeyas); and Dhrishtadyumna, Shikhandi, and indeed all the Prabhadrakas.
विक्रमं मम पश्यन्तु धनुषश्च महद्बलम् ।
लाघवं चास्त्रवीर्यं च भुजयोश्च बलं युधि ॥१४॥
14. vikramaṁ mama paśyantu dhanuṣaśca mahadbalam ,
lāghavaṁ cāstravīryaṁ ca bhujayośca balaṁ yudhi.
14. vikramam mama paśyantu dhanuṣaḥ ca mahat balam
lāghavam ca astravīryam ca bhujayoḥ ca balam yudhi
14. mama vikramam ca dhanuṣaḥ mahat balam ca lāghavam
ca astravīryam ca bhujayoḥ ca balam yudhi paśyantu
14. Let them witness my valor, the great power of my bow, my agility, the might of my weapons, and the strength of my arms in battle.
अद्य पश्यन्तु मे पार्थाः सिद्धाश्च सह चारणैः ।
यादृशं मे बलं बाह्वोः संपदस्त्रेषु या च मे ॥१५॥
15. adya paśyantu me pārthāḥ siddhāśca saha cāraṇaiḥ ,
yādṛśaṁ me balaṁ bāhvoḥ saṁpadastreṣu yā ca me.
15. adya paśyantu me pārthāḥ siddhāḥ ca saha cāraṇaiḥ
yādṛśam me balam bāhvoḥ sampat astreṣu yā ca me
15. adya pārthāḥ ca siddhāḥ ca cāraṇaiḥ saha me bāhvoḥ
yādṛśam balam ca astreṣu yā me sampat ca paśyantu
15. Today, let the sons of Pritha (Parthas), and the Siddhas along with the Charanas, witness the immense strength of my arms, and the proficiency I possess in weapons.
अद्य मे विक्रमं दृष्ट्वा पाण्डवानां महारथाः ।
प्रतीकारपरा भूत्वा चेष्टन्तां विविधाः क्रियाः ॥१६॥
16. adya me vikramaṁ dṛṣṭvā pāṇḍavānāṁ mahārathāḥ ,
pratīkāraparā bhūtvā ceṣṭantāṁ vividhāḥ kriyāḥ.
16. adya me vikramam dṛṣṭvā pāṇḍavānām mahārathāḥ
pratīkāraparāḥ bhūtvā ceṣṭantām vividhāḥ kriyāḥ
16. adya me vikramam dṛṣṭvā pāṇḍavānām mahārathāḥ
pratīkāraparāḥ bhūtvā vividhāḥ kriyāḥ ceṣṭantām
16. Today, after witnessing my valor, let the great charioteers among the Pandavas, becoming intent on countermeasures, undertake various actions.
अद्य सैन्यानि पाण्डूनां द्रावयिष्ये समन्ततः ।
द्रोणभीष्मावति विभो सूतपुत्रं च संयुगे ।
विचरिष्ये रणे युध्यन्प्रियार्थं तव कौरव ॥१७॥
17. adya sainyāni pāṇḍūnāṁ drāvayiṣye samantataḥ ,
droṇabhīṣmāvati vibho sūtaputraṁ ca saṁyuge ,
vicariṣye raṇe yudhyanpriyārthaṁ tava kaurava.
17. adya sainyāni pāṇḍūnām drāvayiṣye
samantataḥ droṇabhīṣmau ati vibho
sūtaputram ca saṃyuge vicarṣye
raṇe yudhyan priyārtham tava kaurava
17. adya vibho kaurava tava priyārtham
pāṇḍūnām sainyāni samantataḥ
drāvayiṣye saṃyuge yudhyan droṇabhīṣmau
ati sūtaputram ca raṇe vicarṣye
17. Today, O lord (vibho) and O Kaurava, for your pleasure, I will completely rout the armies of the Pāṇḍavas. In battle, fighting, I will move about, surpassing Drona and Bhishma, and Karna.
संजय उवाच ।
अभिषिक्ते तदा शल्ये तव सैन्येषु मानद ।
न कर्णव्यसनं किंचिन्मेनिरे तत्र भारत ॥१८॥
18. saṁjaya uvāca ,
abhiṣikte tadā śalye tava sainyeṣu mānada ,
na karṇavyasanaṁ kiṁcinmenire tatra bhārata.
18. saṃjayaḥ uvāca abhiṣikte tadā śalye tava sainyeṣu
mānada na karṇavyasanam kiñcit menire tatra bhārata
18. saṃjayaḥ uvāca mānada bhārata tadā tava sainyeṣu
śalye abhiṣikte tatra karṇavyasanam kiñcit na menire
18. Sanjaya said: O bestower of honor (mānada), O scion of Bharata, when Salya was then appointed in command of your armies, the soldiers there felt no loss for Karna (karṇavyasanam) at all.
हृष्टाः सुमनसश्चैव बभूवुस्तत्र सैनिकाः ।
मेनिरे निहतान्पार्थान्मद्रराजवशं गतान् ॥१९॥
19. hṛṣṭāḥ sumanasaścaiva babhūvustatra sainikāḥ ,
menire nihatānpārthānmadrarājavaśaṁ gatān.
19. hṛṣṭāḥ sumanasaḥ ca eva babhūvuḥ tatra sainikāḥ
menire nihatān pārthān madrarājavaśam gatān
19. tatra sainikāḥ hṛṣṭāḥ sumanasaḥ ca eva babhūvuḥ
menire pārthān nihatān madrarājavaśam gatān
19. The soldiers there were indeed joyful and cheerful. They considered the Pāṇḍavas as good as slain, having come under the sway of the King of Madras (Madrarāja).
प्रहर्षं प्राप्य सेना तु तावकी भरतर्षभ ।
तां रात्रिं सुखिनी सुप्ता स्वस्थचित्तेव साभवत् ॥२०॥
20. praharṣaṁ prāpya senā tu tāvakī bharatarṣabha ,
tāṁ rātriṁ sukhinī suptā svasthacitteva sābhavat.
20. praharṣam prāpya senā tu tāvakī bharatarṣabha tām
rātrim sukhinī suptā svasthacittā iva sā abhavat
20. bharatarṣabha tāvakī senā praharṣam prāpya tu tām
rātrim sukhinī suptā abhavat sā svasthacittā iva
20. O best of Bharatas (bharatarṣabha), your army, having attained great joy, slept contentedly that night, as if it possessed a tranquil mind.
सैन्यस्य तव तं शब्दं श्रुत्वा राजा युधिष्ठिरः ।
वार्ष्णेयमब्रवीद्वाक्यं सर्वक्षत्रस्य शृण्वतः ॥२१॥
21. sainyasya tava taṁ śabdaṁ śrutvā rājā yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ,
vārṣṇeyamabravīdvākyaṁ sarvakṣatrasya śṛṇvataḥ.
21. sainyasya tava tam śabdam śrutvā rājā Yudhiṣṭhiraḥ
vārṣṇeyam abravīt vākyam sarvakṣatrasya śṛṇvataḥ
21. rājā Yudhiṣṭhiraḥ tava sainyasya tam śabdam śrutvā
sarvakṣatrasya śṛṇvataḥ vārṣṇeyam vākyam abravīt
21. Having heard that sound of your army, King Yudhishthira spoke to Vārṣṇeya (Krishna) while all the kṣatriyas (warriors) were listening.
मद्रराजः कृतः शल्यो धार्तराष्ट्रेण माधव ।
सेनापतिर्महेष्वासः सर्वसैन्येषु पूजितः ॥२२॥
22. madrarājaḥ kṛtaḥ śalyo dhārtarāṣṭreṇa mādhava ,
senāpatirmaheṣvāsaḥ sarvasainyeṣu pūjitaḥ.
22. madrarājaḥ kṛtaḥ Śalyaḥ dhārtarāṣṭreṇa Mādhava
senāpatiḥ maheṣvāsaḥ sarvasainyeṣu pūjitaḥ
22. Mādhava madrarājaḥ Śalyaḥ dhārtarāṣṭreṇa
senāpatiḥ kṛtaḥ maheṣvāsaḥ sarvasainyeṣu pūjitaḥ
22. O Mādhava (Krishna), King Shalya of Madra has been made the general by Duryodhana; he is a great archer and is honored by all armies.
एतज्ज्ञात्वा यथाभूतं कुरु माधव यत्क्षमम् ।
भवान्नेता च गोप्ता च विधत्स्व यदनन्तरम् ॥२३॥
23. etajjñātvā yathābhūtaṁ kuru mādhava yatkṣamam ,
bhavānnetā ca goptā ca vidhatsva yadanantaram.
23. etat jñātvā yathābhūtam kuru Mādhava yat kṣamam
bhavān netā ca goptā ca vidhatsva yat anantaram
23. Mādhava etat yathābhūtam jñātvā yat kṣamam kuru
bhavān netā ca goptā ca yat anantaram vidhatsva
23. O Mādhava (Krishna), knowing this as it truly is, please do what is appropriate. You are both our leader and protector, so arrange what is to follow.
तमब्रवीन्महाराज वासुदेवो जनाधिपम् ।
आर्तायनिमहं जाने यथातत्त्वेन भारत ॥२४॥
24. tamabravīnmahārāja vāsudevo janādhipam ,
ārtāyanimahaṁ jāne yathātattvena bhārata.
24. tam abravīt mahārāja Vāsudevaḥ janādhipam
Ārtāyanim aham jāne yathātattvena Bhārata
24. mahārāja Vāsudevaḥ tam janādhipam abravīt
Bhārata aham Ārtāyanim yathātattvena jāne
24. O great king, Vāsudeva (Krishna) then spoke to the king of men (Yudhishthira): "O Bhārata (Yudhishthira), I know Ārtāyani (Shalya) as he truly is."
वीर्यवांश्च महातेजा महात्मा च विशेषतः ।
कृती च चित्रयोधी च संयुक्तो लाघवेन च ॥२५॥
25. vīryavāṁśca mahātejā mahātmā ca viśeṣataḥ ,
kṛtī ca citrayodhī ca saṁyukto lāghavena ca.
25. vīryavān ca mahātejāḥ mahātmā ca viśeṣataḥ
kṛtī ca citrayodhī ca saṃyuktaḥ lāghavena ca
25. vīryavān ca mahātejāḥ mahātmā ca viśeṣataḥ
kṛtī ca citrayodhī ca lāghavena ca saṃyuktaḥ
25. He is valorous and greatly energetic, and especially a noble (mahātman) person. He is also accomplished and a wonderful fighter, endowed with great swiftness.
यादृग्भीष्मस्तथा द्रोणो यादृक्कर्णश्च संयुगे ।
तादृशस्तद्विशिष्टो वा मद्रराजो मतो मम ॥२६॥
26. yādṛgbhīṣmastathā droṇo yādṛkkarṇaśca saṁyuge ,
tādṛśastadviśiṣṭo vā madrarājo mato mama.
26. yādṛk bhīṣmaḥ tathā droṇaḥ yādṛk karṇaḥ ca saṃyuge
tādṛśaḥ tat viśiṣṭaḥ vā madrarājaḥ mataḥ mama
26. madrarājaḥ saṃyuge yādṛk bhīṣmaḥ tathā droṇaḥ
yādṛk karṇaḥ ca tādṛśaḥ vā tat viśiṣṭaḥ mama mataḥ
26. The king of Madra (Madrarāja), in my opinion, is like Bhishma, or Drona, or Karna in battle, or even superior to them.
युध्यमानस्य तस्याजौ चिन्तयन्नेव भारत ।
योद्धारं नाधिगच्छामि तुल्यरूपं जनाधिप ॥२७॥
27. yudhyamānasya tasyājau cintayanneva bhārata ,
yoddhāraṁ nādhigacchāmi tulyarūpaṁ janādhipa.

27. O scion of Bharata (Bhārata), O ruler of men (Janādhipa), when I reflect on him fighting in battle, I cannot find any warrior who is his equal.
शिखण्ड्यर्जुनभीमानां सात्वतस्य च भारत ।
धृष्टद्युम्नस्य च तथा बलेनाभ्यधिको रणे ॥२८॥
28. śikhaṇḍyarjunabhīmānāṁ sātvatasya ca bhārata ,
dhṛṣṭadyumnasya ca tathā balenābhyadhiko raṇe.

28. O scion of Bharata (Bhārata), he is superior in strength in battle even to Shikhaṇḍī, Arjuna, Bhīma, Sātvata, and Dhṛṣṭadyumna.
मद्रराजो महाराज सिंहद्विरदविक्रमः ।
विचरिष्यत्यभीः काले कालः क्रुद्धः प्रजास्विव ॥२९॥
29. madrarājo mahārāja siṁhadviradavikramaḥ ,
vicariṣyatyabhīḥ kāle kālaḥ kruddhaḥ prajāsviva.

29. The great king, the king of Madras, possessing the valor of a lion and an elephant, will roam about fearlessly in due time, just like enraged Death (kāla) among living beings.
तस्याद्य न प्रपश्यामि प्रतियोद्धारमाहवे ।
त्वामृते पुरुषव्याघ्र शार्दूलसमविक्रमम् ॥३०॥
30. tasyādya na prapaśyāmi pratiyoddhāramāhave ,
tvāmṛte puruṣavyāghra śārdūlasamavikramam.

tvām ṛte puruṣavyāghra śārdūlasamavikramam

30. At present, I do not see any opponent for him in battle, except for you, O tiger among men (puruṣavyāghra), whose valor is equal to a tiger's.
सदेवलोके कृत्स्नेऽस्मिन्नान्यस्त्वत्तः पुमान्भवेत् ।
मद्रराजं रणे क्रुद्धं यो हन्यात्कुरुनन्दन ।
अहन्यहनि युध्यन्तं क्षोभयन्तं बलं तव ॥३१॥
31. sadevaloke kṛtsne'sminnānyastvattaḥ pumānbhavet ,
madrarājaṁ raṇe kruddhaṁ yo hanyātkurunandana ,
ahanyahani yudhyantaṁ kṣobhayantaṁ balaṁ tava.
31. sadevaloke kṛtsne asmin na anyaḥ
tvattaḥ pumān bhavet madrarājam raṇe
kruddham yaḥ hanyāt kurunandana ahanyahani
yudhyantam kṣobhayantam balam tava
31. kurunandana kṛtsne asmin sadevaloke
tvattaḥ anyaḥ pumān na bhavet yaḥ raṇe
kruddham madrarājam ahanyahani
yudhyantam tava balam kṣobhayantam hanyāt
31. In this entire world, including the realm of the gods, there would be no other man but you, O son of Kuru (kurunandana), who could kill the enraged king of Madras in battle, the one who is fighting day after day and agitating your army.
तस्माज्जहि रणे शल्यं मघवानिव शम्बरम् ।
अतिपश्चादसौ वीरो धार्तराष्ट्रेण सत्कृतः ॥३२॥
32. tasmājjahi raṇe śalyaṁ maghavāniva śambaram ,
atipaścādasau vīro dhārtarāṣṭreṇa satkṛtaḥ.
32. tasmāt jahi raṇe śalyam maghavān iva śambaram
atipaścāt asau vīraḥ dhārtarāṣṭreṇa satkṛtaḥ
32. tasmāt jahi raṇe śalyam maghavān iva śambaram

32. Therefore, slay Śalya in battle, just as Maghavan (Indra) slew Śambara. This hero was honored too late by the son of Dhṛtarāṣṭra (Duryodhana).
तवैव हि जयो नूनं हते मद्रेश्वरे युधि ।
तस्मिन्हते हतं सर्वं धार्तराष्ट्रबलं महत् ॥३३॥
33. tavaiva hi jayo nūnaṁ hate madreśvare yudhi ,
tasminhate hataṁ sarvaṁ dhārtarāṣṭrabalaṁ mahat.
33. tava eva hi jayaḥ nūnam hate madreśvare yudhi |
tasmin hate hatam sarvam dhārtarāṣṭrabalam mahat
33. nūnam tava eva hi jayaḥ madreśvare yudhi hate,
tasmin hate,
mahat dhārtarāṣṭrabalam sarvam hatam
33. Indeed, your victory is certain once the king of Madra is slain in battle. With his demise, the entire formidable army of Dhṛtarāṣṭra will be annihilated.
एतच्छ्रुत्वा महाराज वचनं मम सांप्रतम् ।
प्रत्युद्याहि रणे पार्थ मद्रराजं महाबलम् ।
जहि चैनं महाबाहो वासवो नमुचिं यथा ॥३४॥
34. etacchrutvā mahārāja vacanaṁ mama sāṁpratam ,
pratyudyāhi raṇe pārtha madrarājaṁ mahābalam ,
jahi cainaṁ mahābāho vāsavo namuciṁ yathā.

34. mahārāja,

34. O great king, having heard these current words of mine, O Pārtha, advance into battle against the immensely powerful king of Madra. And slay him, O mighty-armed one, just as Vāsava (Indra) slew Namuci.
न चैवात्र दया कार्या मातुलोऽयं ममेति वै ।
क्षत्रधर्मं पुरस्कृत्य जहि मद्रजनेश्वरम् ॥३५॥
35. na caivātra dayā kāryā mātulo'yaṁ mameti vai ,
kṣatradharmaṁ puraskṛtya jahi madrajaneśvaram.
35. na ca eva atra dayā kāryā mātulaḥ ayam mama iti
vai | kṣatradharmam puraskṛtya jahi madrajaneśvaram
35. ca na eva atra ayam mama mātulaḥ iti vai dayā
kāryā kṣatradharmam puraskṛtya madrajaneśvaram jahi
35. And indeed, no pity should be shown here by thinking, "he is my maternal uncle." Upholding the intrinsic nature (dharma) of a warrior (kṣatriya), slay the lord of the Madra people.
भीष्मद्रोणार्णवं तीर्त्वा कर्णपातालसंभवम् ।
मा निमज्जस्व सगणः शल्यमासाद्य गोष्पदम् ॥३६॥
36. bhīṣmadroṇārṇavaṁ tīrtvā karṇapātālasaṁbhavam ,
mā nimajjasva sagaṇaḥ śalyamāsādya goṣpadam.

36. Having successfully navigated the ocean (of obstruction) represented by Bhīṣma and Droṇa, and which had Karṇa as its perilous netherworld, do not now, along with your retinue, drown in the shallow puddle (goṣpada) that you have reached, which is Śalya.
यच्च ते तपसो वीर्यं यच्च क्षात्रं बलं तव ।
तद्दर्शय रणे सर्वं जहि चैनं महारथम् ॥३७॥
37. yacca te tapaso vīryaṁ yacca kṣātraṁ balaṁ tava ,
taddarśaya raṇe sarvaṁ jahi cainaṁ mahāratham.
37. yat ca te tapasaḥ vīryam yat ca kṣātram balam tava
tat darśaya raṇe sarvam jahi ca enam mahāratham
37. te tapasaḥ vīryam yat ca tava kṣātram balam yat ca
tat sarvam raṇe darśaya ca enam mahāratham jahi
37. Show all the power of your austerity (tapas) and your martial strength in battle, and strike down this great warrior.
एतावदुक्त्वा वचनं केशवः परवीरहा ।
जगाम शिबिरं सायं पूज्यमानोऽथ पाण्डवैः ॥३८॥
38. etāvaduktvā vacanaṁ keśavaḥ paravīrahā ,
jagāma śibiraṁ sāyaṁ pūjyamāno'tha pāṇḍavaiḥ.
38. etāvat uktvā vacanam keśavaḥ paravīrahā jagāma
śibiram sāyam pūjyamānaḥ atha pāṇḍavaiḥ
38. paravīrahā keśavaḥ etāvat vacanam uktvā sāyam
śibiram jagāma atha pāṇḍavaiḥ pūjyamānaḥ
38. Keśava, the slayer of enemy heroes, having spoken these words, went to the camp in the evening, being honored by the Pāṇḍavas.
केशवे तु तदा याते धर्मराजो युधिष्ठिरः ।
विसृज्य सर्वान्भ्रातॄंश्च पाञ्चालानथ सोमकान् ।
सुष्वाप रजनीं तां तु विशल्य इव कुञ्जरः ॥३९॥
39. keśave tu tadā yāte dharmarājo yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ,
visṛjya sarvānbhrātṝṁśca pāñcālānatha somakān ,
suṣvāpa rajanīṁ tāṁ tu viśalya iva kuñjaraḥ.

39. When Keśava had departed, King Yudhiṣṭhira (dharma-rāja), after dismissing all his brothers, the Pāñcālas, and the Somakas, indeed slept that night like an elephant relieved of its spear.
ते च सर्वे महेष्वासाः पाञ्चालाः पाण्डवास्तथा ।
कर्णस्य निधने हृष्टाः सुषुपुस्तां निशां तदा ॥४०॥
40. te ca sarve maheṣvāsāḥ pāñcālāḥ pāṇḍavāstathā ,
karṇasya nidhane hṛṣṭāḥ suṣupustāṁ niśāṁ tadā.
40. te ca sarve maheṣvāsāḥ pāñcālāḥ pāṇḍavāḥ tathā
karṇasya nidhane hṛṣṭāḥ suṣupuḥ tām niśām tadā
40. te ca sarve maheṣvāsāḥ pāñcālāḥ tathā pāṇḍavāḥ
karṇasya nidhane hṛṣṭāḥ tadā tām niśām suṣupuḥ
40. All those great archers, the Pāñcālas and the Pāṇḍavas, were delighted at Karṇa's death, and they slept that night.
गतज्वरं महेष्वासं तीर्णपारं महारथम् ।
बभूव पाण्डवेयानां सैन्यं प्रमुदितं निशि ।
सूतपुत्रस्य निधने जयं लब्ध्वा च मारिष ॥४१॥
41. gatajvaraṁ maheṣvāsaṁ tīrṇapāraṁ mahāratham ,
babhūva pāṇḍaveyānāṁ sainyaṁ pramuditaṁ niśi ,
sūtaputrasya nidhane jayaṁ labdhvā ca māriṣa.
41. gatajvaram maheṣvāsam tīrṇapāram
mahāratham babhūva pāṇḍaveyānām
sainyam pramuditam niśi sūtaputrasya
nidhane jayam labdhvā ca māriṣ
41. māriṣa,
sūtaputrasya nidhane ca jayam labdhvā,
pāṇḍaveyānām sainyam gatajvaram maheṣvāsam tīrṇapāram mahāratham niśi pramuditam babhūva.
41. O respected one, after achieving victory with the death of Karṇa, the son of Sūta (sūtaputra), the army of the Pāṇḍavas, now free from anxiety, equipped with mighty archers and great charioteers, and having overcome its adversities, became greatly delighted that night.
