1.
Vaiśampāyana said: Indeed, even as he (Arjuna) was intently watching, Pinākin (Śiva), whose emblem is a bull (Vṛṣabhadhvaja), vanished from sight, just as the sun disappears for the world when it sets.

Then Arjuna, the slayer of enemy heroes, experienced great astonishment, thinking, "Indeed, Mahādeva himself has been seen directly by me, O Bhārata!"

3.
I am blessed; I am greatly favored, because I have directly seen and touched with my hand Tryambaka, Hara, the wielder of the Pināka bow, the bestower of boons, who appeared in a physical form.

And I consider my own self (ātman) to have achieved its supreme purpose (kṛtārtha) by myself, and all enemies to be conquered, and my objective (prayojana) to be fully accomplished.

Then, the glorious lord of waters (jaleśvara), whose complexion resembled lapis lazuli and who was surrounded by hosts of aquatic creatures, arrived, illuminating all directions.

Varuṇa, the master controller and lord of aquatic creatures, arrived at that place, accompanied by nāgas, male rivers, female rivers, daityas, sādhyas, and other deities.

Similarly, the glorious and powerful Yama, the ender of the worlds, personally arrived, accompanied by the Pitṛs (ancestors) who sustain the worlds and manifest in both embodied and unembodied forms.

The wielder of the rod (daṇḍapāṇiḥ), Yama, whose intrinsic nature (ātman) is inconceivable, the destroyer of all beings, the son of Vivasvat, the king of natural law (dharma), was illuminating [the region] with his celestial chariot.

He illuminated the three worlds, the Guhyakas, the Gandharvas, and the Nāgas, appearing like a second sun (mārtaṇḍa) at the approach of the end of an age (yuga).

You are the ancient sage of immeasurable self (ātman), named Nara, of great power. By the command of Brahmā (brahman), dear son, you have attained a mortal existence. You were born from Vāsava, possessing great valor and might.

O delight of the Kurus (Arjuna), the warrior class (kṣatra), whose fierce touch is like fire and who are protected by Bhāradvāja (Droṇa); and also the immensely powerful Dānavas who have assumed human form; and indeed, the Nivātakavacas as well, must all be vanquished.

O son of Kunti (Kaurava), O tormentor of enemies, the emanations (aṁśa) of gods, Gandharvas, and Rākṣasas who have incarnated on earth and are to be struck down by you in battle, will attain a destiny (gati) conquered by the fruit of their own actions (karma), each according to their own merits.

O Arjuna, your imperishable glory will certainly endure in the world, for you have personally appeased Lord (Mahādeva) Shiva in a great battle. So great is your might that even the earth, alongside Vishnu, will be rendered insignificant (by your prowess).

28.
O hero, with these very [snares], I then bound thousands of the great-souled Daityas in the battle concerning Tārakā.

29.
Therefore, O great being, accept these [snares] which have arisen from my grace (prasāda). For surely, not even Death, the aggressor, would be able to escape them.

When you wield this weapon in battle, the earth will undoubtedly become devoid of warriors.

Thereafter, Kubera, who resides on Mount Kailasa and is the lord of wealth, spoke, after the divine weapons had been bestowed by Varuna and Yama.

O Arjuna (Savyasācin), O mighty-armed one, O ancient and eternal deity, you have always become weary alongside us throughout previous ages.

O slayer of foes, accept from me this favorite weapon called Antardhāna (disappearance), which removes vitality, splendor, and radiance, and causes enemies to sleep.

Then, the mighty-armed Arjuna, the delight of the Kurus, who possessed great strength, also duly obtained the divine weapon belonging to Kubera.

Then Indra, the king of the gods, whose voice resembled the roar of thunder and a war-drum, spoke to Pārtha (Arjuna), the tireless performer of deeds, comforting him with gentle words.

O mighty-armed son of Kunti, you are an ancient lord, having achieved the supreme accomplishment (siddhi) and directly attained the state of the gods.

Indeed, a very great task for the gods must be accomplished by you, O subduer of enemies. Heaven (svarga) must be ascended by you; therefore, O greatly resplendent one, prepare yourself.

O Kaurava, a chariot, driven by Matali, will come to earth for your sake. There, I will bestow upon you divine weapons.

Seeing those guardians of the world (lokapāla) assembled on the mountaintop, the intelligent son of Kunti, Arjuna (Dhananjaya), was filled with wonder.

Then, the greatly effulgent Arjuna, with proper reverence, honored the assembled guardians of the world (lokapāla) with words, water, and fruits.

Then, all those wise gods (vibudha), who moved with the speed of thought and desire, returned by the way they had come, after having reciprocally honored Arjuna (Dhananjaya).

42.
Then, Arjuna, the foremost among men (puruṣa), having received the weapons, experienced great joy. With his mind now completely satisfied, he considered himself as though his life's purpose (artha) had been fulfilled.
