संजय उवाच ।
अथ हैमवते प्रस्थे स्थित्वा युद्धाभिनन्दिनः ।
सर्व एव महाराज योधास्तत्र समागताः ॥१॥

1. Saṃjaya said: Then, O great King, all those warriors, delighting in battle, having stayed on the Himālayan plateau, assembled there.
शल्यश्च चित्रसेनश्च शकुनिश्च महारथः ।
अश्वत्थामा कृपश्चैव कृतवर्मा च सात्वतः ॥२॥
2. śalyaśca citrasenaśca śakuniśca mahārathaḥ ,
aśvatthāmā kṛpaścaiva kṛtavarmā ca sātvataḥ.

2. Śalya, Citrasena, and Śakuni, the great warrior (mahāratha), along with Aśvatthāmā, Kṛpa, and Kṛtavarmā of the Sātvata clan.
सुषेणोऽरिष्टसेनश्च धृतसेनश्च वीर्यवान् ।
जयत्सेनश्च राजानस्ते रात्रिमुषितास्ततः ॥३॥
3. suṣeṇo'riṣṭasenaśca dhṛtasenaśca vīryavān ,
jayatsenaśca rājānaste rātrimuṣitāstataḥ.

3. Suṣeṇa, Ariṣṭasena, and the valiant Dhṛtasena, as well as Jayatsena and (other) kings, they all spent the night there.
रणे कर्णे हते वीरे त्रासिता जितकाशिभिः ।
नालभञ्शर्म ते पुत्रा हिमवन्तमृते गिरिम् ॥४॥
4. raṇe karṇe hate vīre trāsitā jitakāśibhiḥ ,
nālabhañśarma te putrā himavantamṛte girim.

4. After the heroic Karṇa was killed in battle, your sons, terrified by the victorious ones, could not find peace (śarma) anywhere, as if only the Himālaya mountain could offer them refuge.
तेऽब्रुवन्सहितास्तत्र राजानं सैन्यसंनिधौ ।
कृतयत्ना रणे राजन्संपूज्य विधिवत्तदा ॥५॥
5. te'bruvansahitāstatra rājānaṁ sainyasaṁnidhau ,
kṛtayatnā raṇe rājansaṁpūjya vidhivattadā.
5. te abruvan sahitāḥ tatra rājānam sainyasaṃnidhau
kṛtayātnāḥ raṇe rājan sampūjya vidhivat tadā
5. tadā raṇe kṛtayātnāḥ vidhivat sampūjya te sahitāḥ

5. Then, after having exerted themselves greatly in battle and having duly honored (sampūjya) the king, they (your sons), assembled there in the presence of the army, addressed the king: 'O King!'
कृत्वा सेनाप्रणेतारं परांस्त्वं योद्धुमर्हसि ।
येनाभिगुप्ताः संग्रामे जयेमासुहृदो वयम् ॥६॥
6. kṛtvā senāpraṇetāraṁ parāṁstvaṁ yoddhumarhasi ,
yenābhiguptāḥ saṁgrāme jayemāsuhṛdo vayam.

yena abhigūptāḥ saṃgrāme jayema asuhṛdaḥ vayam

6. Having appointed a leader for the army, you (O King) are fit to fight the enemies. Protected by him, we may conquer our foes (asuhṛdaḥ) in battle.
ततो दुर्योधनः स्थित्वा रथे रथवरोत्तमम् ।
सर्वयुद्धविभागज्ञमन्तकप्रतिमं युधि ॥७॥
7. tato duryodhanaḥ sthitvā rathe rathavarottamam ,
sarvayuddhavibhāgajñamantakapratimaṁ yudhi.

7. Then Duryodhana, having taken his stand in his chariot, [beheld/considered] the supreme among chariot warriors (rathavarottamam), who was knowledgeable in all branches of warfare and was like Antaka (god of death) in battle (yudhi).
स्वङ्गं प्रच्छन्नशिरसं कम्बुग्रीवं प्रियंवदम् ।
व्याकोशपद्माभिमुखं व्याघ्रास्यं मेरुगौरवम् ॥८॥
8. svaṅgaṁ pracchannaśirasaṁ kambugrīvaṁ priyaṁvadam ,
vyākośapadmābhimukhaṁ vyāghrāsyaṁ merugauravam.

8. (He was) well-formed, with a covered head, a conch-like neck, pleasant-speaking, with a face like a blooming lotus, a tiger-like countenance, and the dignity of Mount Meru.
स्थाणोर्वृषस्य सदृशं स्कन्धनेत्रगतिस्वरैः ।
पुष्टश्लिष्टायतभुजं सुविस्तीर्णघनोरसम् ॥९॥
9. sthāṇorvṛṣasya sadṛśaṁ skandhanetragatisvaraiḥ ,
puṣṭaśliṣṭāyatabhujaṁ suvistīrṇaghanorasam.

9. (He was) similar to Śiva's (Sthāṇu's) bull (Vṛṣa) in his shoulders, eyes, gait, and voice; having strong, firmly-joined, and long arms, and a very broad and solid chest.
जवे बले च सदृशमरुणानुजवातयोः ।
आदित्यस्य त्विषा तुल्यं बुद्ध्या चोशनसा समम् ॥१०॥
10. jave bale ca sadṛśamaruṇānujavātayoḥ ,
ādityasya tviṣā tulyaṁ buddhyā cośanasā samam.
10. jave bale ca sadṛśam aruṇānuja vātayoḥ
ādityasya tviṣā tulyaṃ buddhyā ca uśanasā samam
10. jave ca bale aruṇānuja vātayoḥ sadṛśam
ādityasya tviṣā tulyaṃ ca buddhyā uśanasā samam
10. (He was) similar in speed and strength to Aruṇa's younger brother (Garuḍa) and Vāta; equal to the sun (āditya) in splendor, and equal to Uśanas (Śukra) in intellect.
कान्तिरूपमुखैश्वर्यैस्त्रिभिश्चन्द्रमसोपमम् ।
काञ्चनोपलसंघातैः सदृशं श्लिष्टसंधिकम् ॥११॥
11. kāntirūpamukhaiśvaryaistribhiścandramasopamam ,
kāñcanopalasaṁghātaiḥ sadṛśaṁ śliṣṭasaṁdhikam.
11. kāntirūpamukhāiśvaryaiḥ tribhiḥ candramasā upamam
kāñcanopalasaṃghātaiḥ sadṛśaṃ śliṣṭasandhikam
11. kāntirūpamukhāiśvaryaiḥ tribhiḥ candramasā upamam
kāñcanopalasaṃghātaiḥ sadṛśaṃ śliṣṭasandhikam
11. (He was) similar to the moon in three aspects: radiance, beauty, and facial majesty; similar to masses of gold and precious stones, with well-formed joints.
सुवृत्तोरुकटीजङ्घं सुपादं स्वङ्गुलीनखम् ।
स्मृत्वा स्मृत्वैव च गुणान्धात्रा यत्नाद्विनिर्मितम् ॥१२॥
12. suvṛttorukaṭījaṅghaṁ supādaṁ svaṅgulīnakham ,
smṛtvā smṛtvaiva ca guṇāndhātrā yatnādvinirmitam.
12. suvṛttorukaṭījaṅgham supādam svaṅgulīnakham smṛtvā
smṛtvā eva ca guṇān dhātrā yatnāt vinirmitam
12. dhātrā guṇān smṛtvā smṛtvā eva ca yatnāt vinirmitam

12. Remembering its qualities again and again, it was diligently fashioned by the Creator (Dhātṛ), endowed with beautifully rounded broad hips and thighs, well-formed feet, and attractive fingers, toes, and nails.
सर्वलक्षणसंपन्नं निपुणं श्रुतिसागरम् ।
जेतारं तरसारीणामजेयं शत्रुभिर्बलात् ॥१३॥
13. sarvalakṣaṇasaṁpannaṁ nipuṇaṁ śrutisāgaram ,
jetāraṁ tarasārīṇāmajeyaṁ śatrubhirbalāt.
13. sarvalakṣaṇasampannam nipuṇam śrutisāgaram
jetāram tarasārīṇām ajeyam śatrubhiḥ balāt
13. sarvalakṣaṇasampannam nipuṇam śrutisāgaram
jetāram tarasārīṇām ajeyam śatrubhiḥ balāt
13. He (was) endowed with all auspicious marks, skillful, an ocean of scriptures, a conqueror of swift-moving rivals, and unconquerable by enemies through force.
दशाङ्गं यश्चतुष्पादमिष्वस्त्रं वेद तत्त्वतः ।
साङ्गांश्च चतुरो वेदान्सम्यगाख्यानपञ्चमान् ॥१४॥
14. daśāṅgaṁ yaścatuṣpādamiṣvastraṁ veda tattvataḥ ,
sāṅgāṁśca caturo vedānsamyagākhyānapañcamān.
14. daśāṅgam yaḥ catuṣpādam iṣvastram veda tattvataḥ
sāṅgān ca caturaḥ vedān samyak ākhyānapañcamān
14. yaḥ daśāṅgam catuṣpādam iṣvastram tattvataḥ veda
ca sāṅgān ākhyānapañcamān caturaḥ vedān samyak
14. He who truly knows the science of archery (iṣvastra) with its ten components (daśāṅga) and four divisions (catuṣpāda), and also thoroughly comprehends the four Vedas along with their auxiliary branches (sāṅga), deeming the narrative traditions (ākhyāna) as the fifth.
आराध्य त्र्यम्बकं यत्नाद्व्रतैरुग्रैर्महातपाः ।
अयोनिजायामुत्पन्नो द्रोणेनायोनिजेन यः ॥१५॥
15. ārādhya tryambakaṁ yatnādvratairugrairmahātapāḥ ,
ayonijāyāmutpanno droṇenāyonijena yaḥ.
15. ārādhya tryambakam yatnāt vrataiḥ ugraiḥ mahātapāḥ
ayonijāyām utpannaḥ droṇena ayonijena yaḥ
15. yaḥ mahātapāḥ yatnāt ugraiḥ vrataiḥ tryambakam
ārādhya ayonijena droṇena ayonijāyām utpannaḥ
15. He who, a great ascetic (mahātapāḥ), diligently worshipped Tryambaka with severe vows, and who was born from a non-uterine source (ayonijā) by Droṇa, who himself was not born from a womb (ayonija).
तमप्रतिमकर्माणं रूपेणासदृशं भुवि ।
पारगं सर्वविद्यानां गुणार्णवमनिन्दितम् ।
तमभ्येत्यात्मजस्तुभ्यमश्वत्थामानमब्रवीत् ॥१६॥
16. tamapratimakarmāṇaṁ rūpeṇāsadṛśaṁ bhuvi ,
pāragaṁ sarvavidyānāṁ guṇārṇavamaninditam ,
tamabhyetyātmajastubhyamaśvatthāmānamabravīt.
16. tam apratima-karmāṇam rūpeṇa asadṛśam
bhuvi pāragam sarva-vidyānām
guṇa-arṇavam aninditam tam abhyetya
ātma-jaḥ tubhyam aśvatthāmānam abravīt
16. tubhyam ātma-jaḥ apratima-karmāṇam
rūpeṇa bhuvi asadṛśam sarva-vidyānām
pāragam guṇa-arṇavam aninditam
tam aśvatthāmānam abhyetya abravīt
16. Your son (Duryodhana), having approached that Aśvatthāman - who was unequaled in his deeds, unrivaled in beauty on earth, a master of all lores, an ocean of noble qualities, and blameless - spoke to him.
यं पुरस्कृत्य सहिता युधि जेष्याम पाण्डवान् ।
गुरुपुत्रोऽद्य सर्वेषामस्माकं परमा गतिः ।
भवांस्तस्मान्नियोगात्ते कोऽस्तु सेनापतिर्मम ॥१७॥
17. yaṁ puraskṛtya sahitā yudhi jeṣyāma pāṇḍavān ,
guruputro'dya sarveṣāmasmākaṁ paramā gatiḥ ,
bhavāṁstasmānniyogātte ko'stu senāpatirmama.
17. yam puraskṛtya sahitāḥ yudhi jeṣyāma
pāṇḍavān guru-putraḥ adya sarveṣām
asmākam paramā gatiḥ bhavān tasmāt
niyogāt te kaḥ astu senā-patiḥ mama
17. yam puraskṛtya sahitāḥ yudhi pāṇḍavān jeṣyāma? adya guru-putraḥ bhavān sarveṣām asmākam paramā gatiḥ.
tasmāt te niyogāt mama kaḥ senā-patiḥ astu?
17. (Duryodhana said:) "Having placed whom at our forefront, we, united, shall conquer the Pāṇḍavas in battle? Now, you, the son of our guru (Aśvatthāman), are the supreme refuge (gati) for all of us. Therefore, by your appointment, who should be my commander-in-chief?"
द्रौणिरुवाच ।
अयं कुलेन वीर्येण तेजसा यशसा श्रिया ।
सर्वैर्गुणैः समुदितः शल्यो नोऽस्तु चमूपतिः ॥१८॥
18. drauṇiruvāca ,
ayaṁ kulena vīryeṇa tejasā yaśasā śriyā ,
sarvairguṇaiḥ samuditaḥ śalyo no'stu camūpatiḥ.
18. drauṇiḥ uvāca ayam kulena vīryeṇa tejasā yaśasā śriyā
sarvaiḥ guṇaiḥ samuditaḥ śalyaḥ naḥ astu camū-patiḥ
18. drauṇiḥ uvāca: kulena vīryeṇa tejasā yaśasā śriyā sarvaiḥ guṇaiḥ samuditaḥ ayam śalyaḥ naḥ camū-patiḥ astu.
18. Droṇa's son (Drauṇi) said: "May this Śalya be our commander, who is endowed with noble lineage, valor, splendor, fame, glory, and all other qualities."
भागिनेयान्निजांस्त्यक्त्वा कृतज्ञोऽस्मानुपागतः ।
महासेनो महाबाहुर्महासेन इवापरः ॥१९॥
19. bhāgineyānnijāṁstyaktvā kṛtajño'smānupāgataḥ ,
mahāseno mahābāhurmahāsena ivāparaḥ.
19. bhāgineyān nijān tyaktvā kṛtajñaḥ asmān upāgataḥ
mahā-senaḥ mahā-bāhuḥ mahā-senaḥ iva aparaḥ
19. (saḥ) nijān bhāgineyān tyaktvā kṛtajñaḥ asmān upāgataḥ.
saḥ mahā-senaḥ mahā-bāhuḥ aparaḥ mahā-senaḥ iva (asti).
19. (He, Śalya,) having abandoned his own nephews (Pāṇḍavas), and being loyal to his commitments (kṛtajña), has joined us. He is a great general, mighty-armed, like another Mahāsena (Kārtikeya).
एनं सेनापतिं कृत्वा नृपतिं नृपसत्तम ।
शक्यः प्राप्तुं जयोऽस्माभिर्देवैः स्कन्दमिवाजितम् ॥२०॥
20. enaṁ senāpatiṁ kṛtvā nṛpatiṁ nṛpasattama ,
śakyaḥ prāptuṁ jayo'smābhirdevaiḥ skandamivājitam.
20. enam senāpatim kṛtvā nṛpatim nṛpasattama śakyaḥ
prāptum jayaḥ asmābhiḥ devaiḥ skandam iva ajitam
20. nṛpasattama,
asmābhiḥ enam nṛpatim senāpatim kṛtvā,
devaiḥ ajitam skandam iva,
jayaḥ prāptum śakyaḥ.
20. O best of kings, by appointing this ruler as commander-in-chief, victory can be achieved by us, just as the unconquered Skanda (Kārtikeya) was gained by the gods.
तथोक्ते द्रोणपुत्रेण सर्व एव नराधिपाः ।
परिवार्य स्थिताः शल्यं जयशब्दांश्च चक्रिरे ।
युद्धाय च मतिं चक्रूरावेशं च परं ययुः ॥२१॥
21. tathokte droṇaputreṇa sarva eva narādhipāḥ ,
parivārya sthitāḥ śalyaṁ jayaśabdāṁśca cakrire ,
yuddhāya ca matiṁ cakrūrāveśaṁ ca paraṁ yayuḥ.
21. tathā ukte droṇaputreṇa sarve eva
narādhipāḥ parivārya sthitāḥ śalyam
jayaśabdān ca cakrire yuddhāya ca
matim cakruḥ āveśam ca param yayuḥ
21. tathā droṇaputreṇa ukte,
sarve eva narādhipāḥ śalyam parivārya sthitāḥ,
ca jayaśabdān cakrire.
ca yuddhāya matim cakruḥ,
ca param āveśam yayuḥ.
21. After the son of Droṇa (Aśvatthāman) had thus spoken, all the kings surrounded Śalya and stood, uttering shouts of victory. They also resolved for battle and attained supreme enthusiasm.
ततो दुर्योधनः शल्यं भूमौ स्थित्वा रथे स्थितम् ।
उवाच प्राञ्जलिर्भूत्वा रामभीष्मसमं रणे ॥२२॥
22. tato duryodhanaḥ śalyaṁ bhūmau sthitvā rathe sthitam ,
uvāca prāñjalirbhūtvā rāmabhīṣmasamaṁ raṇe.
22. tataḥ duryodhanaḥ śalyam bhūmau sthitvā rathe
sthitam uvāca prāñjaliḥ bhūtvā rāmabhīṣmasamam raṇe
22. tataḥ duryodhanaḥ bhūmau sthitvā,
prāñjaliḥ bhūtvā,
raṇe rāmabhīṣmasamam rathe sthitam śalyam uvāca.
22. Then Duryodhana, standing on the ground, approached Śalya, who was seated in his chariot, and, with folded hands, addressed him, [praising him as] equal to Rāma and Bhīṣma in battle.
अयं स कालः संप्राप्तो मित्राणां मित्रवत्सल ।
यत्र मित्रममित्रं वा परीक्षन्ते बुधा जनाः ॥२३॥
23. ayaṁ sa kālaḥ saṁprāpto mitrāṇāṁ mitravatsala ,
yatra mitramamitraṁ vā parīkṣante budhā janāḥ.
23. ayam sa kālaḥ samprāptaḥ mitrāṇām mitravatsala
yatra mitram amitram vā parīkṣante budhā janāḥ
23. mitravatsala,
mitrāṇām ayam sa kālaḥ samprāptaḥ yatra budhā janāḥ mitram vā amitram parīkṣante.
23. O friend-loving one, this is that opportune moment that has arrived for friends, when wise people discern whether someone is truly a friend or an enemy.
स भवानस्तु नः शूरः प्रणेता वाहिनीमुखे ।
रणं च याते भवति पाण्डवा मन्दचेतसः ।
भविष्यन्ति सहामात्याः पाञ्चालाश्च निरुद्यमाः ॥२४॥
24. sa bhavānastu naḥ śūraḥ praṇetā vāhinīmukhe ,
raṇaṁ ca yāte bhavati pāṇḍavā mandacetasaḥ ,
bhaviṣyanti sahāmātyāḥ pāñcālāśca nirudyamāḥ.
24. saḥ bhavān astu naḥ śūraḥ praṇetā
vāhinīmukhe raṇam ca yāte bhavati
pāṇḍavāḥ mandacetasaḥ bhaviṣyanti
saha-āmātyāḥ pāñcālāḥ ca nirudyamāḥ
24. naḥ śūraḥ praṇetā bhavān vāhinīmukhe
astu raṇam ca yāte pāṇḍavāḥ
mandacetasaḥ bhavati pāñcālāḥ ca
saha-āmātyāḥ nirudyamāḥ bhaviṣyanti
24. May your honor be our brave leader at the forefront of the army. When you enter the battle, the Pandavas will become faint-hearted, and the Panchalas, along with their ministers, will also be devoid of effort.
शल्य उवाच ।
यत्तु मां मन्यसे राजन्कुरुराज करोमि तत् ।
त्वत्प्रियार्थं हि मे सर्वं प्राणा राज्यं धनानि च ॥२५॥
25. śalya uvāca ,
yattu māṁ manyase rājankururāja karomi tat ,
tvatpriyārthaṁ hi me sarvaṁ prāṇā rājyaṁ dhanāni ca.
25. śalyaḥ uvāca yat tu mām manyase rājan kururāja karomi
tat tvat-priyārtham hi me sarvam prāṇāḥ rājyam dhanāni ca
25. śalyaḥ uvāca rājan kururāja,
yat tu mām manyase tat karomi hi me sarvam prāṇāḥ rājyam dhanāni ca tvat-priyārtham
25. Śalya said: 'O King, O Kuru King, whatever you consider appropriate for me, that I shall certainly do. Indeed, for your pleasure, all my life, kingdom, and wealth belong to you.'
दुर्योधन उवाच ।
सेनापत्येन वरये त्वामहं मातुलातुलम् ।
सोऽस्मान्पाहि युधां श्रेष्ठ स्कन्दो देवानिवाहवे ॥२६॥
26. duryodhana uvāca ,
senāpatyena varaye tvāmahaṁ mātulātulam ,
so'smānpāhi yudhāṁ śreṣṭha skando devānivāhave.
26. duryodhanaḥ uvāca senāpatyena varaye tvām aham mātula-atulam
saḥ asmān pāhi yudhām śreṣṭha skandaḥ devān iva āhave
26. duryodhanaḥ uvāca mātula-atulam aham tvām senāpatyena varaye

26. Duryodhana said: 'O unequalled maternal uncle, I choose you for the supreme command (senāpatyam). O best of warriors, protect us just as Skanda protects the gods in battle.'
अभिषिच्यस्व राजेन्द्र देवानामिव पावकिः ।
जहि शत्रून्रणे वीर महेन्द्रो दानवानिव ॥२७॥
27. abhiṣicyasva rājendra devānāmiva pāvakiḥ ,
jahi śatrūnraṇe vīra mahendro dānavāniva.

27. O King of kings, consecrate yourself (as commander) just as Pāvaki (Skanda) was consecrated among the gods. O hero, vanquish the enemies in battle, just as Mahendra (Indra) vanquishes the Dānavas.
