वैशंपायन उवाच ।
एवं सा रजनी तेषामाश्रमे पुण्यकर्मणाम् ।
शिवा नक्षत्रसंपन्ना सा व्यतीयाय भारत ॥१॥

1. Vaiśampāyana said: "Thus, that night passed for them, the performers of righteous (karma) deeds, in the hermitage. It was an auspicious night, adorned with stars, O Bhārata."
तत्र तत्र कथाश्चासंस्तेषां धर्मार्थलक्षणाः ।
विचित्रपदसंचारा नानाश्रुतिभिरन्विताः ॥२॥
2. tatra tatra kathāścāsaṁsteṣāṁ dharmārthalakṣaṇāḥ ,
vicitrapadasaṁcārā nānāśrutibhiranvitāḥ.

2. Everywhere, there were stories concerning them, marked by principles of righteousness (dharma) and material prosperity, featuring diverse expressions and endowed with various traditional teachings (śruti).
पाण्डवास्त्वभितो मातुर्धरण्यां सुषुपुस्तदा ।
उत्सृज्य सुमहार्हाणि शयनानि नराधिप ॥३॥
3. pāṇḍavāstvabhito māturdharaṇyāṁ suṣupustadā ,
utsṛjya sumahārhāṇi śayanāni narādhipa.
3. Pāṇḍavāḥ tu abhitaḥ mātuḥ dharaṇyām suṣupuḥ
tadā utsṛjya sumahārhāṇi śayanāni narādhipa
3. narādhipa Pāṇḍavāḥ tu tadā sumahārhāṇi śayanāni

3. But the Pāṇḍavas then slept near mother earth, having abandoned their extremely valuable beds, O king (narādhipa).
यदाहारोऽभवद्राजा धृतराष्ट्रो महामनाः ।
तदाहारा नृवीरास्ते न्यवसंस्तां निशां तदा ॥४॥
4. yadāhāro'bhavadrājā dhṛtarāṣṭro mahāmanāḥ ,
tadāhārā nṛvīrāste nyavasaṁstāṁ niśāṁ tadā.
4. yat āhāraḥ abhavat rājā Dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ mahāmanāḥ
tat āhārāḥ nṛvīrāḥ te nyavasan tām niśām tadā
4. rājā Dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ mahāmanāḥ yat āhāraḥ abhavat
te nṛvīrāḥ tat āhārāḥ tām niśām tadā nyavasan
4. Whatever food King Dhṛtarāṣṭra, the great-souled one, ate, that same sustenance was taken by those heroic men, and they stayed there for that night.
व्यतीतायां तु शर्वर्यां कृतपूर्वाह्णिकक्रियः ।
भ्रातृभिः सह कौन्तेयो ददर्शाश्रममण्डलम् ॥५॥
5. vyatītāyāṁ tu śarvaryāṁ kṛtapūrvāhṇikakriyaḥ ,
bhrātṛbhiḥ saha kaunteyo dadarśāśramamaṇḍalam.

5. However, when the night had passed, the son of Kuntī (Kaunteya), having performed his morning rituals with his brothers, saw the hermitage complex (āśrama-maṇḍala).
सान्तःपुरपरीवारः सभृत्यः सपुरोहितः ।
यथासुखं यथोद्देशं धृतराष्ट्राभ्यनुज्ञया ॥६॥
6. sāntaḥpuraparīvāraḥ sabhṛtyaḥ sapurohitaḥ ,
yathāsukhaṁ yathoddeśaṁ dhṛtarāṣṭrābhyanujñayā.

yathāsukham yathoddeśam dhṛtarāṣṭra abhyanujñayā

6. Accompanied by his inner circle, entourage, servants, and priests, (he proceeded) comfortably and as intended, with the permission of Dhritarashtra.
ददर्श तत्र वेदीश्च संप्रज्वलितपावकाः ।
कृताभिषेकैर्मुनिभिर्हुताग्निभिरुपस्थिताः ॥७॥
7. dadarśa tatra vedīśca saṁprajvalitapāvakāḥ ,
kṛtābhiṣekairmunibhirhutāgnibhirupasthitāḥ.

kṛtābhiṣekaiḥ munibhiḥ hutāgnibhiḥ upasthitāḥ

7. There he saw altars with blazing fires, attended by sages who had performed ritual baths and offered oblations into the fire.
वानेयपुष्पनिकरैराज्यधूमोद्गमैरपि ।
ब्राह्मेण वपुषा युक्ता युक्ता मुनिगणैश्च ताः ॥८॥
8. vāneyapuṣpanikarairājyadhūmodgamairapi ,
brāhmeṇa vapuṣā yuktā yuktā munigaṇaiśca tāḥ.
8. vāneyapuṣpanikaraiḥ ājyadhūmodgamaiḥ api
brāhmeṇa vapuṣā yuktā yuktā munigaṇaiḥ ca tāḥ

8. Adorned with heaps of forest flowers and rising clouds of clarified butter smoke, those altars were endowed with a sacred aura and accompanied by groups of sages.
मृगयूथैरनुद्विग्नैस्तत्र तत्र समाश्रितैः ।
अशङ्कितैः पक्षिगणैः प्रगीतैरिव च प्रभो ॥९॥
9. mṛgayūthairanudvignaistatra tatra samāśritaiḥ ,
aśaṅkitaiḥ pakṣigaṇaiḥ pragītairiva ca prabho.
9. mṛgayūthaiḥ anudvignaiḥ tatra tatra samāśritaiḥ
aśaṅkitaiḥ pakṣigaṇaiḥ pragītaiḥ iva ca prabho
9. prabho ca mṛgayūthaiḥ anudvignaiḥ tatra tatra
samāśritaiḥ aśaṅkitaiḥ pakṣigaṇaiḥ pragītaiḥ iva
9. O lord, (those altars were also adorned) with undisturbed herds of deer dwelling here and there, and with fearless flocks of birds, as if singing.
केकाभिर्नीलकण्ठानां दात्यूहानां च कूजितैः ।
कोकिलानां च कुहरैः शुभैः श्रुतिमनोहरैः ॥१०॥
10. kekābhirnīlakaṇṭhānāṁ dātyūhānāṁ ca kūjitaiḥ ,
kokilānāṁ ca kuharaiḥ śubhaiḥ śrutimanoharaiḥ.
10. kekābhiḥ nīlakaṇṭhānāṃ dātyūhānāṃ ca kūjitaiḥ
kokilānāṃ ca kuharaiḥ śubhaiḥ śrutimanoharaiḥ
10. nīlakaṇṭhānāṃ kekābhiḥ ca dātyūhānāṃ kūjitaiḥ
ca kokilānāṃ śubhaiḥ śrutimanoharaiḥ kuharaiḥ
10. By the cries of peacocks and the chirping of water-hens, and by the auspicious, ear-pleasing cooing of cuckoos.
प्राधीतद्विजघोषैश्च क्वचित्क्वचिदलंकृतम् ।
फलमूलसमुद्वाहैर्महद्भिश्चोपशोभितम् ॥११॥
11. prādhītadvijaghoṣaiśca kvacitkvacidalaṁkṛtam ,
phalamūlasamudvāhairmahadbhiścopaśobhitam.
11. prādhītadvijaghoṣaiḥ ca kvacit kvacit alaṃkṛtam
phalamūlasamudvāhaiḥ mahadbhiḥ ca upaśobhitam
11. kvacit kvacit prādhītadvijaghoṣaiḥ ca alaṃkṛtam
ca mahadbhiḥ phalamūlasamudvāhaiḥ upaśobhitam
11. And here and there, it was adorned by the sounds of reciting Brahmins (dvija), and graced by vast collections of fruits and roots.
ततः स राजा प्रददौ तापसार्थमुपाहृतान् ।
कलशान्काञ्चनान्राजंस्तथैवौदुम्बरानपि ॥१२॥
12. tataḥ sa rājā pradadau tāpasārthamupāhṛtān ,
kalaśānkāñcanānrājaṁstathaivaudumbarānapi.
12. tataḥ sa rājā pradadau tāpasārtham upāhṛtān
kalaśān kāñcanān rājan tathaiva audumbarān api
12. rājan tataḥ sa rājā tāpasārtham upāhṛtān
kāñcanān audumbarān api ca kalaśān pradadau
12. Then that king, O King, gave the golden pitchers that had been collected for the ascetics, and similarly those made of Udumbara wood.
अजिनानि प्रवेणीश्च स्रुक्स्रुवं च महीपतिः ।
कमण्डलूंस्तथा स्थालीः पिठराणि च भारत ॥१३॥
13. ajināni praveṇīśca sruksruvaṁ ca mahīpatiḥ ,
kamaṇḍalūṁstathā sthālīḥ piṭharāṇi ca bhārata.
13. ajināni praveṇīḥ ca sruksruvam ca mahīpatiḥ
kamaṇḍalūn tathā sthālīḥ piṭharāṇi ca bhārata
13. bhārata mahīpatiḥ ajināni ca praveṇīḥ ca sruksruvam
tathā kamaṇḍalūn sthālīḥ ca piṭharāṇi ca pradadau
13. The king (mahīpati) gave deer skins, and mats, and the large and small sacrificial ladles (sruc-sruva pair); likewise, O Bhārata, water-pots, plates, and cooking vessels.
भाजनानि च लौहानि पात्रीश्च विविधा नृप ।
यद्यदिच्छति यावच्च यदन्यदपि काङ्क्षितम् ॥१४॥
14. bhājanāni ca lauhāni pātrīśca vividhā nṛpa ,
yadyadicchati yāvacca yadanyadapi kāṅkṣitam.
14. bhājanāni ca lauhāni pātrīḥ ca vividhā nṛpa yat
yat icchati yāvat ca yat anyat api kāṅkṣitam
14. nṛpa bhājanāni lauhāni ca vividhāḥ pātrīḥ ca

14. O king, (he provided) metallic vessels and various plates, as well as whatever else was desired and to whatever extent it was wished for.
एवं स राजा धर्मात्मा परीत्याश्रममण्डलम् ।
वसु विश्राण्य तत्सर्वं पुनरायान्महीपतिः ॥१५॥
15. evaṁ sa rājā dharmātmā parītyāśramamaṇḍalam ,
vasu viśrāṇya tatsarvaṁ punarāyānmahīpatiḥ.
15. evam saḥ rājā dharmātmā parītya āśramamaṇḍalam
vasu viśrāṇya tat sarvam punar āyāt mahīpatiḥ
15. evam saḥ dharmātmā rājā āśramamaṇḍalam parītya
tat sarvam vasu viśrāṇya mahīpatiḥ punar āyāt
15. Thus, that king, whose intrinsic nature (dharma) was righteousness, after having traversed the region of hermitages and distributed all that wealth, returned.
कृताह्निकं च राजानं धृतराष्ट्रं मनीषिणम् ।
ददर्शासीनमव्यग्रं गान्धारीसहितं तदा ॥१६॥
16. kṛtāhnikaṁ ca rājānaṁ dhṛtarāṣṭraṁ manīṣiṇam ,
dadarśāsīnamavyagraṁ gāndhārīsahitaṁ tadā.
16. kṛta āhnikam ca rājānam dhṛtarāṣṭram manīṣiṇam
dadarśa āsīnam avyagram gāndhārīsahitam tadā
16. tadā rājānam dhṛtarāṣṭram manīṣiṇam kṛta āhnikam
ca avyagram gāndhārīsahitam āsīnam dadarśa
16. Then, he saw King Dhṛtarāṣṭra, who was wise and undisturbed, having performed his daily rites and seated with Gāndhārī.
मातरं चाविदूरस्थां शिष्यवत्प्रणतां स्थिताम् ।
कुन्तीं ददर्श धर्मात्मा सततं धर्मचारिणीम् ॥१७॥
17. mātaraṁ cāvidūrasthāṁ śiṣyavatpraṇatāṁ sthitām ,
kuntīṁ dadarśa dharmātmā satataṁ dharmacāriṇīm.
17. mātaram ca avidūrasthām śiṣyavat praṇatām sthitām
kuntīm dadarśa dharmātmā satatam dharmacāriṇīm
17. dharmātmā ca mātaram kuntīm avidūrasthām śiṣyavat
praṇatām sthitām satatam dharmacāriṇīm dadarśa
17. And the king, whose intrinsic nature (dharma) was righteousness, saw his mother Kuntī, standing nearby, bowed like a disciple, constantly practicing her duties (dharma).
स तमभ्यर्च्य राजानं नाम संश्राव्य चात्मनः ।
निषीदेत्यभ्यनुज्ञातो बृस्यामुपविवेश ह ॥१८॥
18. sa tamabhyarcya rājānaṁ nāma saṁśrāvya cātmanaḥ ,
niṣīdetyabhyanujñāto bṛsyāmupaviveśa ha.
18. saḥ tam abhyarcya rājānam nāma saṃśrāvya ca ātmanaḥ
niṣīda iti abhyanujñātaḥ bṛsyām upaviveśa ha
18. saḥ tam rājānam abhyarcya ca ātmanaḥ nāma saṃśrāvya
niṣīda iti abhyanujñātaḥ bṛsyām upaviveśa ha
18. After honoring the king and stating his own name, he was granted permission with the words 'Please be seated,' and he then sat upon a mat.
भीमसेनादयश्चैव पाण्डवाः कौरवर्षभम् ।
अभिवाद्योपसंगृह्य निषेदुः पार्थिवाज्ञया ॥१९॥
19. bhīmasenādayaścaiva pāṇḍavāḥ kauravarṣabham ,
abhivādyopasaṁgṛhya niṣeduḥ pārthivājñayā.
19. bhīmasenādayaḥ ca eva pāṇḍavāḥ kauravarṣabham
abhivādya upasaṅgṛhya niṣeduḥ pārthivājñayā
19. bhīmasenādayaḥ ca eva pāṇḍavāḥ kauravarṣabham
abhivādya upasaṅgṛhya pārthivājñayā niṣeduḥ
19. Bhimasena and the other Pāṇḍavas, having saluted and received permission from the chief of the Kurus, sat down according to the king's command.
स तैः परिवृतो राजा शुशुभेऽतीव कौरवः ।
बिभ्रद्ब्राह्मीं श्रियं दीप्तां देवैरिव बृहस्पतिः ॥२०॥
20. sa taiḥ parivṛto rājā śuśubhe'tīva kauravaḥ ,
bibhradbrāhmīṁ śriyaṁ dīptāṁ devairiva bṛhaspatiḥ.
20. saḥ taiḥ parivṛtaḥ rājā śuśubhe atīva kauravaḥ
bibhrat brāhmīm śriyam dīptām devaiḥ iva bṛhaspatiḥ
20. saḥ kauravaḥ rājā taiḥ parivṛtaḥ dīptām brāhmīm
śriyam bibhrat devaiḥ iva bṛhaspatiḥ atīva śuśubhe
20. That Kuru king, surrounded by them, shone exceedingly, bearing a brilliant divine splendor, just like Brihaspati (guru of the gods) among the deities.
तथा तेषूपविष्टेषु समाजग्मुर्महर्षयः ।
शतयूपप्रभृतयः कुरुक्षेत्रनिवासिनः ॥२१॥
21. tathā teṣūpaviṣṭeṣu samājagmurmaharṣayaḥ ,
śatayūpaprabhṛtayaḥ kurukṣetranivāsinaḥ.
21. tathā teṣu upaviṣṭeṣu samājagmuḥ maharṣayaḥ
śatayūpaprabhṛtayaḥ kurukṣetranivāsinaḥ
21. tathā teṣu upaviṣṭeṣu kurukṣetranivāsinaḥ
śatayūpaprabhṛtayaḥ maharṣayaḥ samājagmuḥ
21. Thus, as they took their seats, the great sages, headed by Śatayūpa and others, who resided in Kurukṣetra, assembled.
व्यासश्च भगवान्विप्रो देवर्षिगणपूजितः ।
वृतः शिष्यैर्महातेजा दर्शयामास तं नृपम् ॥२२॥
22. vyāsaśca bhagavānvipro devarṣigaṇapūjitaḥ ,
vṛtaḥ śiṣyairmahātejā darśayāmāsa taṁ nṛpam.
22. vyāsaḥ ca bhagavān vipraḥ devarṣigaṇapūjitaḥ
vṛtaḥ śiṣyaiḥ mahātejāḥ darśayāmāsa tam nṛpam
22. vyāsaḥ ca bhagavān vipraḥ devarṣigaṇapūjitaḥ
śiṣyaiḥ vṛtaḥ mahātejāḥ tam nṛpam darśayāmāsa
22. And the revered Vyāsa, a Brahmin worshipped by hosts of divine sages, surrounded by his disciples, the immensely powerful one, appeared before that king.
ततः स राजा कौरव्यः कुन्तीपुत्रश्च वीर्यवान् ।
भीमसेनादयश्चैव समुत्थायाभ्यपूजयन् ॥२३॥
23. tataḥ sa rājā kauravyaḥ kuntīputraśca vīryavān ,
bhīmasenādayaścaiva samutthāyābhyapūjayan.
23. tataḥ saḥ rājā kauravyaḥ kuntīputraḥ ca vīryavān
bhīmasenādayaḥ ca eva samutthāya abhyapūjayan
23. tataḥ saḥ rājā kauravyaḥ ca vīryavān kuntīputraḥ
ca bhīmasenādayaḥ eva samutthāya abhyapūjayan
23. Then that Kuru king, and the valiant son of Kuntī, along with Bhīmasena and others, all rose up and paid homage.
समागतस्ततो व्यासः शतयूपादिभिर्वृतः ।
धृतराष्ट्रं महीपालमास्यतामित्यभाषत ॥२४॥
24. samāgatastato vyāsaḥ śatayūpādibhirvṛtaḥ ,
dhṛtarāṣṭraṁ mahīpālamāsyatāmityabhāṣata.
24. samāgataḥ tataḥ vyāsaḥ śatayūpādibhiḥ vṛtaḥ
dhṛtarāṣṭram mahīpālam āsyatām iti abhāṣata
24. tataḥ samāgataḥ vyāsaḥ śatayūpādibhiḥ vṛtaḥ
mahīpālam dhṛtarāṣṭram iti āsyatām abhāṣata
24. Then, Vyāsa, having arrived and accompanied by Śatayūpa and others, addressed King Dhṛtarāṣṭra, saying, "Please be seated."
नवं तु विष्टरं कौश्यं कृष्णाजिनकुशोत्तरम् ।
प्रतिपेदे तदा व्यासस्तदर्थमुपकल्पितम् ॥२५॥
25. navaṁ tu viṣṭaraṁ kauśyaṁ kṛṣṇājinakuśottaram ,
pratipede tadā vyāsastadarthamupakalpitam.
25. navam tu viṣṭaram kauśyam kṛṣṇājinakuśottaram
pratipepe tadā vyāsaḥ tadartham upakalpitam
25. tu tadā vyāsaḥ navam kauśyam kṛṣṇājinakuśottaram
tadartham upakalpitam viṣṭaram pratipepe
25. But Vyāsa then accepted a new seat, made of silk, topped with black antelope skin and Kuśa grass, which had been prepared specifically for him.
ते च सर्वे द्विजश्रेष्ठा विष्टरेषु समन्ततः ।
द्वैपायनाभ्यनुज्ञाता निषेदुर्विपुलौजसः ॥२६॥
26. te ca sarve dvijaśreṣṭhā viṣṭareṣu samantataḥ ,
dvaipāyanābhyanujñātā niṣedurvipulaujasaḥ.
26. te ca sarve dvijaśreṣṭhāḥ viṣṭareṣu samantataḥ
dvaipāyanābhyanujñātāḥ niṣeduḥ vipulaujasaḥ
26. te ca sarve dvijaśreṣṭhāḥ vipulaujasaḥ
dvaipāyanābhyanujñātāḥ samantataḥ viṣṭareṣu niṣeduḥ
26. And all those most excellent Brahmins, filled with great energy, having been permitted by Dvaipāyana, sat down on their seats all around.
