Saṃjaya said: O Lord of the people (viśāṃ pate), in the forenoon of that dreadful day of battle, the exceedingly terrible slaughter of the kings' bodies began.

And in the battle of the Kurus and the Pāṇḍavas, who were desiring victory, there was a roar like that of lions, making heaven and earth reverberate.

There was a clamor accompanied by the sounds of hand-clapping and conchs. And the lion-like roars of the heroes roaring in response also arose.

O best of the Bhāratas (bharatarṣabha), there were also the sounds of bowstrings struck by palm-protectors, and the sounds of the footsteps of the infantry, and the great sounds of the horses.

Having adopted a cruel resolve and completely disregarding their lives, all of them advanced towards the Pāṇḍavas with their banners raised.

O King, Bhīṣma, the son of Śāntanu, himself charged towards Arjuna (dhanaṃjaya) in battle, holding his dreadful bow which was like the staff of Death (kāladaṇḍa).

Those two tigers among the Kurus, desiring each other's death – but the mighty Bhīṣma (gāṅgeya), having wounded Arjuna (pārtha) in battle, could not make him tremble. Similarly, O King, Arjuna (pāṇḍava) also could not make Bhīṣma tremble in the fight (yudhi).

But your formidable son (Lakṣmaṇa), in the great battle, severed Nakula's yoke-poles with arrows and also struck down his banner.

Durmukha, however, having confronted the mighty Sahadeva, pierced him with a shower of arrows as he exerted himself in the great battle.

Then, in that great battle, the heroic Sahadeva struck down Durmukha's charioteer with a very sharp arrow.

Having met each other in battle, those two, fierce in combat and seeking mutual retribution, began to terrify each other with dreadful arrows.

King Yudhishthira himself went towards the king of Madras. Then, O venerable one (māriṣa), the lord of Madras broke Yudhishthira's bow into two pieces.

Then, taking up another bow and fourteen arrows, Drupada's son (Dhṛṣṭadyumna) retaliated, piercing Droṇa in the battle. Those two, greatly enraged at each other, then fought a very fierce combat.

But then, O king, Bahlika struck the enraged Dhristaketu with many arrows. Then he roared a lion's roar.

The enraged King of Chedi swiftly struck Bahlika in battle with nine arrows, just as one intoxicated elephant might strike another.

Then, in battle, those two warriors struck each other with a well-sharpened, keen, and sharp arrow, and also with various other arrows.

46.
O King, Virāṭa, the commander of the army, swiftly attacked the brave Bhagadatta in battle. Then, a battle ensued.

47.
Though struck by Bhagadatta with a shower of arrows, Virāṭa, becoming extremely enraged, showered (arrows) upon (Bhagadatta), just as a cloud pours its rain upon a mountain.

Then, Bhagadatta swiftly covered King Virāṭa in battle, just as a cloud covers the risen sun.

49.
Kṛpa, the son of Śaradvan, confronted Bṛhatkṣatra, the Kekaya king. O Bhārata, Kṛpa then showered him with arrows.

50.
The enraged Kekaya king (Bṛhatkṣatra) then covered Gautama (Kṛpa) with a shower of arrows. After they (Kṛpa and Kekaya) had killed each other's horses and shattered each other's bows...

Those two (Kṛpa and Kekaya), now chariotless and enraged, met for a sword-fight. The battle that ensued between them was of dreadful form and exceedingly fierce.

And then, King Drupada, greatly delighted, marched against Jayadratha, the Saindhava, who appeared joyous, O tormentor of enemies (paraṃtapa).

Then, King Saindhava struck Drupada with three arrows in battle, and Drupada in turn pierced him.

Between those two, a battle arose, dreadful and very terrible, yet it brought joy to spectators, like the confrontation of Shukra (Venus) and Angaraka (Mars).

But Vikarna, your son, advanced upon the mighty Sutasoma with swift horses, and then a battle ensued.

Although Vikarna, having pierced Sutasoma with arrows, could not shake him, Sutasoma likewise (did not shake) Vikarna; this indeed was marvelous to behold.

The valiant Cekitāna, a great chariot-warrior, greatly enraged and fighting for the Pāṇḍavas, rushed towards Suśarman, that tiger among men.

But, O great king, Suśarman, in that battle, warded off the great chariot-warrior Cekitāna with a tremendous shower of arrows.

59.
Cekitāna, also enraged in the great battle, covered Suśarman with his arrows, just as a great cloud envelops a mountain.

O best of kings, the powerful Śakuni, himself enraged, rushed towards the valiant Prativindhya, like an intoxicated elephant charging another intoxicated elephant.

mahāratham kuntibhojam āhave saṃsajjajatuḥ
69.
The two Avanti princes, Vindā and Anuvindā, attacked in battle the heroic great charioteer Kuntibhoja, who was accompanied by his army and his son.

There, we saw the astonishing valor of the Avantis, for they fought steadfastly with a large army.

But Anuvindā struck Kuntibhoja with a mace. Kuntibhoja then quickly showered him with volleys of arrows.

And Kuntibhoja's son also wounded Vinda with arrows. In turn, Vinda wounded him (Kuntibhoja's son), and that was truly astonishing.

O respected one, the five Kekaya brothers, along with their armies, engaged the five Gandharas, who were also accompanied by their forces, in battle.

74.
And your son Virabahu fought Uttara, Virata's son and the best among charioteers, piercing him with sharp arrows. And Uttara, too, pierced that brave warrior (Virabahu) with sharp arrows.

O King, the king of Chedi rushed upon Uluka in battle. And Uluka, too, attacked him with sharp, feathered arrows.

O lord of the people, a terrible battle took place between those two (Chedi-raja and Uluka). Very enraged and undefeated, they tore at each other.

Thus, in that battle, there was a tumultuous engagement involving thousands of duels between chariots, elephants, horses, and foot soldiers, from both your forces and theirs.

For a moment, that battle was delightful to witness. But then, O king, nothing at all could be discerned, as if everyone was fighting like madmen.

79.
In that battle, elephants fought elephants, and chariot warriors fought chariot warriors. Horses, having singled out other horses, and foot soldiers fought foot soldiers.

Then, the battle became extremely fierce and chaotic, as the heroes in that encounter confronted each other.

81.
There, the divine sages (devarṣayaḥ), the perfected beings (siddhāḥ), and the bards (cāraṇāḥ) had assembled. They watched that dreadful battle, which resembled the war between gods and demons.

Then, O honorable one (māriṣa), thousands of elephants, and also chariots, masses of horses, and masses of men came together, advancing in an opposing manner.

O tiger among men (naravyāghra), the chariot warriors, elephant warriors, and infantry soldiers, along with the cavalrymen, were seen fighting again and again, here and there.
