भीष्म उवाच ।
स पन्नगपतिस्तत्र प्रययौ ब्राह्मणं प्रति ।
तमेव मनसा ध्यायन्कार्यवत्तां विचारयन् ॥१॥
1. bhīṣma uvāca ,
sa pannagapatistatra prayayau brāhmaṇaṁ prati ,
tameva manasā dhyāyankāryavattāṁ vicārayan.

1. Bhishma said: That lord of serpents went there, approaching the brahmin. He went, meditating on him in his mind and considering the importance of his purpose.
तमभिक्रम्य नागेन्द्रो मतिमान्स नरेश्वर ।
प्रोवाच मधुरं वाक्यं प्रकृत्या धर्मवत्सलः ॥२॥
2. tamabhikramya nāgendro matimānsa nareśvara ,
provāca madhuraṁ vākyaṁ prakṛtyā dharmavatsalaḥ.
2. tam abhikramya nāgendraḥ matimān sa narēśvaraḥ |
provāca madhuram vākyam prakṛtyā dharmavatsalaḥ
2. matimān sa narēśvaraḥ prakṛtyā dharmavatsalaḥ
nāgendraḥ tam abhikramya madhuram vākyam provāca
2. Approaching him, that intelligent king of serpents (Nāga), who was formerly a lord of men, and who by his intrinsic nature (prakṛti) was devoted to natural law (dharma), spoke sweet words.
भो भो क्षाम्याभिभाषे त्वां न रोषं कर्तुमर्हसि ।
इह त्वमभिसंप्राप्तः कस्यार्थे किं प्रयोजनम् ॥३॥
3. bho bho kṣāmyābhibhāṣe tvāṁ na roṣaṁ kartumarhasi ,
iha tvamabhisaṁprāptaḥ kasyārthe kiṁ prayojanam.
3. bho bho kṣāmyā abhibhāṣe tvām na roṣam kartum arhasi
| iha tvam abhisaṃprāptaḥ kasya arthe kim prayojanam
3. bho bho kṣāmyā tvām abhibhāṣe tvam roṣam kartum na arhasi
tvam iha kasya arthe abhisaṃprāptaḥ? kim prayojanam?
3. "O venerable one! I address you with patience; you ought not to become angry. For what purpose have you come here? What is your objective?"
आभिमुख्यादभिक्रम्य स्नेहात्पृच्छामि ते द्विज ।
विविक्ते गोमतीतीरे किं वा त्वं पर्युपाससे ॥४॥
4. ābhimukhyādabhikramya snehātpṛcchāmi te dvija ,
vivikte gomatītīre kiṁ vā tvaṁ paryupāsase.
4. ābhimukhyāt abhikramya snehāt pṛcchāmi te dvija
| vivikte gomatītīre kim vā tvam paryupāsase
4. dvija! ābhimukhyāt abhikramya,
snehāt te pṛcchāmi: tvam vivikte gomatītīre kim vā paryupāsase?
4. "O twice-born one (dvija)! Having directly approached you, I ask you out of affection: what is it that you are observing on the solitary bank of the Gomati river?"
ब्राह्मण उवाच ।
धर्मारण्यं हि मां विद्धि नागं द्रष्टुमिहागतम् ।
पद्मनाभं द्विजश्रेष्ठं तत्र मे कार्यमाहितम् ॥५॥
5. brāhmaṇa uvāca ,
dharmāraṇyaṁ hi māṁ viddhi nāgaṁ draṣṭumihāgatam ,
padmanābhaṁ dvijaśreṣṭhaṁ tatra me kāryamāhitam.
5. brāhmaṇaḥ uvāca | dharma-araṇyam
hi mām viddhi nāgam draṣṭum
iha āgatam | padmanābham
dvija-śreṣṭham tatra me kāryam āhitam
5. The brahmin said: 'Indeed, know me to be from Dharma-aranya, having come here to see the serpent (nāga). My task (kārya) is established there with Padmanābha, the foremost among brāhmaṇas.'
तस्य चाहमसांनिध्यं श्रुतवानस्मि तं गतम् ।
स्वजनं तं प्रतीक्षामि पर्जन्यमिव कर्षकः ॥६॥
6. tasya cāhamasāṁnidhyaṁ śrutavānasmi taṁ gatam ,
svajanaṁ taṁ pratīkṣāmi parjanyamiva karṣakaḥ.
6. tasya ca aham asaṃnidhyam śrutavān asmi tam gatam
| sva-janam tam pratīkṣāmi parjanyam iva karṣakaḥ
6. And I have heard of his absence, that he has departed. I await that kinsman, just as a farmer awaits the rain cloud.
तस्य चाक्लेशकरणं स्वस्तिकारसमाहितम् ।
वर्तयाम्ययुतं ब्रह्म योगयुक्तो निरामयः ॥७॥
7. tasya cākleśakaraṇaṁ svastikārasamāhitam ,
vartayāmyayutaṁ brahma yogayukto nirāmayaḥ.
7. tasya ca akleśa-karaṇam svasti-kāra-samāhitam |
vartayāmi ayutam brahman yoga-yuktaḥ nirāmayaḥ
7. And for his sake, performing acts without distress, and intent on benevolent actions, I endure for an immense period, O brahmin, endowed with (yogic) discipline (yoga) and free from ailment.
नाग उवाच ।
अहो कल्याणवृत्तस्त्वं साधु सज्जनवत्सलः ।
श्रवाढ्यस्त्वं महाभाग परं स्नेहेन पश्यसि ॥८॥
8. nāga uvāca ,
aho kalyāṇavṛttastvaṁ sādhu sajjanavatsalaḥ ,
śravāḍhyastvaṁ mahābhāga paraṁ snehena paśyasi.
8. nāgaḥ uvāca | aho kalyāṇa-vṛttaḥ tvam sādhu saj-jana-vatsalaḥ
| śravā-āḍhyaḥ tvam mahā-bhāga param snehena paśyasi
8. The nāga said: 'Oh, you are indeed of excellent conduct and benevolent towards virtuous people! You are rich in wisdom, O highly fortunate one! You perceive with supreme affection.'
अहं स नागो विप्रर्षे यथा मां विन्दते भवान् ।
आज्ञापय यथा स्वैरं किं करोमि प्रियं तव ॥९॥
9. ahaṁ sa nāgo viprarṣe yathā māṁ vindate bhavān ,
ājñāpaya yathā svairaṁ kiṁ karomi priyaṁ tava.
9. aham saḥ nāgaḥ viprarṣe yathā mām vindate bhavān
ājñāpaya yathā svairam kim karomi priyam tava
9. viprarṣe bhavān yathā mām vindate,
aham sa nāgaḥ.
yathā svairam ājñāpaya,
tava kim priyam karomi.
9. O sage among brahmins, I am that nāga just as you recognize me. Please command me freely; what can I do that would be pleasing to you?
भवन्तं स्वजनादस्मि संप्राप्तं श्रुतवानिह ।
अतस्त्वां स्वयमेवाहं द्रष्टुमभ्यागतो द्विज ॥१०॥
10. bhavantaṁ svajanādasmi saṁprāptaṁ śrutavāniha ,
atastvāṁ svayamevāhaṁ draṣṭumabhyāgato dvija.
10. bhavantam svajanāt asmi samprāptam śrutavān iha
atas tvām svayam eva aham draṣṭum abhyāgataḥ dvija
10. dvija,
iha bhavantam svajanāt samprāptam asmi śrutavān.
atas aham svayam eva tvām draṣṭum abhyāgataḥ.
10. O brahmin, I have heard from my kin that you have arrived here. Therefore, I myself have come to see you.
संप्राप्तश्च भवानद्य कृतार्थः प्रतियास्यति ।
विस्रब्धो मां द्विजश्रेष्ठ विषये योक्तुमर्हसि ॥११॥
11. saṁprāptaśca bhavānadya kṛtārthaḥ pratiyāsyati ,
visrabdho māṁ dvijaśreṣṭha viṣaye yoktumarhasi.
11. samprāptaḥ ca bhavān adya kṛtārthaḥ pratiyāsyati
visrabdhaḥ mām dvijaśreṣṭha viṣaye yoktum arhasi
11. dvijaśreṣṭha,
adya samprāptaḥ bhavān ca kṛtārthaḥ pratiyāsyati.
visrabdhaḥ mām viṣaye yoktum arhasi.
11. And having arrived today, you will return with your purpose fulfilled. O best of brahmins, you ought to employ me confidently in your affairs.
वयं हि भवता सर्वे गुणक्रीता विशेषतः ।
यस्त्वमात्महितं त्यक्त्वा मामेवेहानुरुध्यसे ॥१२॥
12. vayaṁ hi bhavatā sarve guṇakrītā viśeṣataḥ ,
yastvamātmahitaṁ tyaktvā māmevehānurudhyase.
12. vayam hi bhavatā sarve guṇakrītāḥ viśeṣataḥ yat
tvam ātmahitam tyaktvā mām eva iha anurudhyase
12. hi,
bhavatā sarve vayam viśeṣataḥ guṇakrītāḥ.
yat tvam ātmahitam tyaktvā,
iha mām eva anurudhyase.
12. Indeed, all of us are especially won over by your qualities, because you, abandoning your own welfare (ātmahita), are devoted to me here.
ब्राह्मण उवाच ।
आगतोऽहं महाभाग तव दर्शनलालसः ।
कंचिदर्थमनर्थज्ञः प्रष्टुकामो भुजंगम ॥१३॥
13. brāhmaṇa uvāca ,
āgato'haṁ mahābhāga tava darśanalālasaḥ ,
kaṁcidarthamanarthajñaḥ praṣṭukāmo bhujaṁgama.
13. brāhmaṇa uvāca āgataḥ aham mahābhāga tava darśanalālasaḥ
kaṃcit artham anarthajñaḥ praṣṭukāmaḥ bhujaṅgama
13. The brahmin said: "O greatly blessed serpent, I have come eager to see you. Being ignorant of what is truly beneficial, I desire to ask you something."
अहमात्मानमात्मस्थो मार्गमाणोऽऽत्मनो हितम् ।
वासार्थिनं महाप्राज्ञ बलवन्तमुपास्मि ह ॥१४॥
14. ahamātmānamātmastho mārgamāṇo''tmano hitam ,
vāsārthinaṁ mahāprājña balavantamupāsmi ha.
14. aham ātmānam ātmasthaḥ mārgamāṇaḥ ātmanaḥ hitam
vāsārthinam mahāprājña balavantam upāsmi ha
14. O greatly wise one, I, abiding in my own (ātman) and seeking what is beneficial for myself, indeed approach you, the powerful one who desires an abode.
प्रकाशितस्त्वं स्वगुणैर्यशोगर्भगभस्तिभिः ।
शशाङ्ककरसंस्पर्शैर्हृद्यैरात्मप्रकाशितैः ॥१५॥
15. prakāśitastvaṁ svaguṇairyaśogarbhagabhastibhiḥ ,
śaśāṅkakarasaṁsparśairhṛdyairātmaprakāśitaiḥ.
15. prakāśitaḥ tvam svaguṇaiḥ yaśogarbhagabhastibhiḥ
śaśāṅkakarasparśaiḥ hṛdyaiḥ ātmaprakāśitaiḥ
15. You are manifested by your own qualities, which are like rays bearing glory within them, and by delightful, self-revealed touches like moonbeams.
तस्य मे प्रश्नमुत्पन्नं छिन्धि त्वमनिलाशन ।
पश्चात्कार्यं वदिष्यामि श्रोतुमर्हति मे भवान् ॥१६॥
16. tasya me praśnamutpannaṁ chindhi tvamanilāśana ,
paścātkāryaṁ vadiṣyāmi śrotumarhati me bhavān.
16. tasya me praśnam utpannam chindhi tvam anilāśana
paścāt kāryam vadiṣyāmi śrotum arhati me bhavān
16. O wind-eater (anilāśana), please resolve this question that has arisen. Afterwards, I will tell you my purpose, which your honor ought to hear.
