अत्रैव कीर्त्यते सद्भिर्ब्राह्मणस्वाभिमर्शने ।
नृगेण सुमहत्कृच्छ्रं यदवाप्तं कुरूद्वह ॥१॥
1. bhīṣma uvāca ,
atraiva kīrtyate sadbhirbrāhmaṇasvābhimarśane ,
nṛgeṇa sumahatkṛcchraṁ yadavāptaṁ kurūdvaha.

1. Bhishma said: O upholder of the Kurus, in this very context, the virtuous recount the great hardship that King Nṛga experienced due to the improper seizure of a brahmin's property.
निविशन्त्यां पुरा पार्थ द्वारवत्यामिति श्रुतिः ।
अदृश्यत महाकूपस्तृणवीरुत्समावृतः ॥२॥
2. niviśantyāṁ purā pārtha dvāravatyāmiti śrutiḥ ,
adṛśyata mahākūpastṛṇavīrutsamāvṛtaḥ.
2. niviśantyām purā pārtha dvāravatyām iti
śrutiḥ adṛśyata mahākūpaḥ tṛṇavīrutsamāvṛtaḥ
2. pārtha purā dvāravatyām niviśantyām iti

2. O Pārtha, there is a tradition (śruti) that formerly, as Dvaraka was being established, a large well was observed, completely overgrown with grass and creepers.
प्रयत्नं तत्र कुर्वाणास्तस्मात्कूपाज्जलार्थिनः ।
श्रमेण महता युक्तास्तस्मिंस्तोये सुसंवृते ॥३॥
3. prayatnaṁ tatra kurvāṇāstasmātkūpājjalārthinaḥ ,
śrameṇa mahatā yuktāstasmiṁstoye susaṁvṛte.
3. prayatnam tatra kurvāṇāḥ tasmāt kūpāt jalārthinaḥ
śrameṇa mahatā yuktāḥ tasmin toye susaṃvṛte

3. Those seeking water, making efforts at that well, were engaged in great labor, for the water within it was completely concealed.
ददृशुस्ते महाकायं कृकलासमवस्थितम् ।
तस्य चोद्धरणे यत्नमकुर्वंस्ते सहस्रशः ॥४॥
4. dadṛśuste mahākāyaṁ kṛkalāsamavasthitam ,
tasya coddharaṇe yatnamakurvaṁste sahasraśaḥ.
4. dadṛśuḥ te mahākāyam kṛkalāsam avasthitam
tasya ca uddharaṇe yatnam akurvan te sahasraśaḥ
4. te mahākāyam kṛkalāsam avasthitam dadṛśuḥ ca
te tasya uddharaṇe sahasraśaḥ yatnam akurvan
4. They saw a huge-bodied lizard situated there. And they made thousands of attempts to pull it out.
प्रग्रहैश्चर्मपट्टैश्च तं बद्ध्वा पर्वतोपमम् ।
नाशक्नुवन्समुद्धर्तुं ततो जग्मुर्जनार्दनम् ॥५॥
5. pragrahaiścarmapaṭṭaiśca taṁ baddhvā parvatopamam ,
nāśaknuvansamuddhartuṁ tato jagmurjanārdanam.
5. pragrahaiḥ carmapaṭṭaiḥ ca tam baddhvā parvatopamam
na aśaknuvan samuddhartum tataḥ jagmuḥ janārdanam
5. pragrahaiḥ carmapaṭṭaiḥ ca tam parvatopamam baddhvā

5. Having bound that mountain-like lizard with ropes and leather straps, they were unable to pull it out. Then, they went to Janardana (Kṛṣṇa).
खमावृत्योदपानस्य कृकलासः स्थितो महान् ।
तस्य नास्ति समुद्धर्तेत्यथ कृष्णे न्यवेदयन् ॥६॥
6. khamāvṛtyodapānasya kṛkalāsaḥ sthito mahān ,
tasya nāsti samuddhartetyatha kṛṣṇe nyavedayan.
6. kham āvṛtya udapānasya kṛkalāsaḥ sthitaḥ mahān
tasya na asti samuddhartā iti atha kṛṣṇe nyavedayan
6. mahān kṛkalāsaḥ udapānasya kham āvṛtya sthitaḥ atha
kṛṣṇe tasya samuddhartā na asti iti nyavedayan
6. A great lizard was situated there, having covered the opening of the well. Then they reported to Kṛṣṇa, saying, 'There is no one who can pull it out.'
स वासुदेवेन समुद्धृतश्च पृष्टश्च कामान्निजगाद राजा ।
नृगस्तदात्मानमथो न्यवेदयत्पुरातनं यज्ञसहस्रयाजिनम् ॥७॥
7. sa vāsudevena samuddhṛtaśca; pṛṣṭaśca kāmānnijagāda rājā ,
nṛgastadātmānamatho nyavedaya;tpurātanaṁ yajñasahasrayājinam.
7. sa vāsudevena samuddhṛtaḥ ca
pṛṣṭaḥ ca kāmān nijagāda rājā
nṛgaḥ tadā ātmānam atho nyavedayat
purātanam yajñasahasrayājinam
7. He was raised by Vāsudeva (Kṛṣṇa), and when questioned about his desires, the king (Nṛga) spoke them. Nṛga then revealed his true self (ātman), stating that he was the ancient king who had performed thousands of Vedic rituals (yajña).
तथा ब्रुवाणं तु तमाह माधवः शुभं त्वया कर्म कृतं न पापकम् ।
कथं भवान्दुर्गतिमीदृशीं गतो नरेन्द्र तद्ब्रूहि किमेतदीदृशम् ॥८॥
8. tathā bruvāṇaṁ tu tamāha mādhavaḥ; śubhaṁ tvayā karma kṛtaṁ na pāpakam ,
kathaṁ bhavāndurgatimīdṛśīṁ gato; narendra tadbrūhi kimetadīdṛśam.
8. tathā bruvāṇam tu tam āha mādhavaḥ
śubham tvayā karma kṛtam na pāpakam
katham bhavān durgatim īdṛśīm gataḥ
narendra tat brūhi kim etat īdṛśam
8. To him, who was speaking thus, Mādhava (Kṛṣṇa) said: "You performed virtuous deeds (karma), not sinful ones. O King, how did you come to this terrible condition? Please explain how this happened."
शतं सहस्राणि शतं गवां पुनः पुनः शतान्यष्ट शतायुतानि ।
त्वया पुरा दत्तमितीह शुश्रुम नृप द्विजेभ्यः क्व नु तद्गतं तव ॥९॥
9. śataṁ sahasrāṇi śataṁ gavāṁ punaḥ; punaḥ śatānyaṣṭa śatāyutāni ,
tvayā purā dattamitīha śuśruma; nṛpa dvijebhyaḥ kva nu tadgataṁ tava.
9. śatam sahasrāṇi śatam gavām punaḥ
punaḥ śatāni aṣṭa śatāyutāni tvayā
purā dattam iti iha śuśruma nṛpa
dvijebhyaḥ kva nu tat gatam tava
9. We have heard here, O King, that you formerly gave away hundreds of thousands, hundreds of cows, and repeatedly, eight million cows to the twice-born (dvija). Where, then, have those gifts of yours gone?
नृगस्ततोऽब्रवीत्कृष्णं ब्राह्मणस्याग्निहोत्रिणः ।
प्रोषितस्य परिभ्रष्टा गौरेका मम गोधने ॥१०॥
10. nṛgastato'bravītkṛṣṇaṁ brāhmaṇasyāgnihotriṇaḥ ,
proṣitasya paribhraṣṭā gaurekā mama godhane.
10. nṛgaḥ tataḥ abravīt kṛṣṇam brāhmaṇasya agnihotriṇaḥ
proṣitasya paribhraṣṭā gauḥ ekā mama godhane
10. Then Nṛga said to Kṛṣṇa: "One cow belonging to a brahmin (dvija), who was a performer of the Vedic fire ritual (homa) and was away from home, strayed into my cattle herd."
गवां सहस्रे संख्याता तदा सा पशुपैर्मम ।
सा ब्राह्मणाय मे दत्ता प्रेत्यार्थमभिकाङ्क्षता ॥११॥
11. gavāṁ sahasre saṁkhyātā tadā sā paśupairmama ,
sā brāhmaṇāya me dattā pretyārthamabhikāṅkṣatā.
11. gavām sahasre saṃkhyātā tadā sā paśupaiḥ mama sā
brāhmaṇāya me dattā pretya artham abhikāṅkṣatā
11. tadā mama paśupaiḥ gavām sahasre sā saṃkhyātā sā
me brāhmaṇāya pretya artham abhikāṅkṣatā dattā
11. At that time, a thousand cows were counted by my cowherds. That cow was given by me to a Brahmin, as I desired merit for the afterlife.
अपश्यत्परिमार्गंश्च तां यां परगृहे द्विजः ।
ममेयमिति चोवाच ब्राह्मणो यस्य साभवत् ॥१२॥
12. apaśyatparimārgaṁśca tāṁ yāṁ paragṛhe dvijaḥ ,
mameyamiti covāca brāhmaṇo yasya sābhavat.
12. apaśyat parimārgan ca tām yām paragṛhe dvijaḥ
mama iyam iti ca uvāca brāhmaṇaḥ yasya sā abhavat
12. parimārgan dvijaḥ paragṛhe yām tām apaśyat ca
yasya sā abhavat brāhmaṇaḥ ca mama iyam iti uvāca
12. The Brahmin, searching, saw that cow in another's house. And the Brahmin to whom it belonged said, 'This is mine!'
तावुभौ समनुप्राप्तौ विवदन्तौ भृशज्वरौ ।
भवान्दाता भवान्हर्तेत्यथ तौ मां तदोचतुः ॥१३॥
13. tāvubhau samanuprāptau vivadantau bhṛśajvarau ,
bhavāndātā bhavānhartetyatha tau māṁ tadocatuḥ.
13. tau ubhau samanuprāptau vivadantau bhṛśa jvarau
bhavān dātā bhavān hartā iti atha tau mām tadā ūcatuḥ
13. tau ubhau vivadantau bhṛśa jvarau samanuprāptau atha tau tadā mām "bhavān dātā,
bhavān hartā" iti ūcatuḥ
13. Those two, greatly agitated and arguing, approached me. Then they said, 'You are the donor, and you are the taker!'
शतेन शतसंख्येन गवां विनिमयेन वै ।
याचे प्रतिग्रहीतारं स तु मामब्रवीदिदम् ॥१४॥
14. śatena śatasaṁkhyena gavāṁ vinimayena vai ,
yāce pratigrahītāraṁ sa tu māmabravīdidam.
14. śatena śatasaṃkhyena gavām vinimayena vai
yāce pratigrahītāram saḥ tu mām abravīt idam
14. aham śatena śatasaṃkhyena gavām vinimayena vai
pratigrahītāram yāce saḥ tu mām idam abravīt
14. I offered a hundred cows as an exchange to the recipient, but he then said this to me:
देशकालोपसंपन्ना दोग्ध्री क्षान्तातिवत्सला ।
स्वादुक्षीरप्रदा धन्या मम नित्यं निवेशने ॥१५॥
15. deśakālopasaṁpannā dogdhrī kṣāntātivatsalā ,
svādukṣīrapradā dhanyā mama nityaṁ niveśane.
15. deśakālopasampannā dogdhrī kṣāntā ativatsalā
svādukṣīrapradā dhanyā mama nityam niveśane
15. deśakālopasampannā dogdhrī kṣāntā ativatsalā
svādukṣīrapradā dhanyā mama nityam niveśane
15. She is a blessed cow, always present in my home, perfectly suited to time and place, a milker, patient, extremely affectionate, and a giver of sweet milk.
कृशं च भरते या गौर्मम पुत्रमपस्तनम् ।
न सा शक्या मया हातुमित्युक्त्वा स जगाम ह ॥१६॥
16. kṛśaṁ ca bharate yā gaurmama putramapastanam ,
na sā śakyā mayā hātumityuktvā sa jagāma ha.
16. kṛśam ca bharate yā gauḥ mama putram apastanam
na sā śakyā mayā hātum iti uktvā sa jagāma ha
16. yā gauḥ mama kṛśam apastanam putram bharate,
sā mayā hātum na śakyā.
iti uktvā sa ha jagāma.
16. That cow, who sustains my frail son, deprived of his mother's milk, cannot possibly be abandoned by me. Having said this, he then departed.
ततस्तमपरं विप्रं याचे विनिमयेन वै ।
गवां शतसहस्रं वै तत्कृते गृह्यतामिति ॥१७॥
17. tatastamaparaṁ vipraṁ yāce vinimayena vai ,
gavāṁ śatasahasraṁ vai tatkṛte gṛhyatāmiti.
17. tataḥ tam aparam vipram yāce vinimayena vai
gavām śatasahasram vai tatkṛte gṛhyatām iti
17. tataḥ aham tam aparam vipram vinimayena yāce (iti): gavām śatasahasram vai tatkṛte gṛhyatām.
17. Then I begged that other Brahmin for an exchange: 'Indeed, let a hundred thousand cows be accepted in its stead.'
ब्राह्मण उवाच ।
न राज्ञां प्रतिगृह्णामि शक्तोऽहं स्वस्य मार्गणे ।
सैव गौर्दीयतां शीघ्रं ममेति मधुसूदन ॥१८॥
18. brāhmaṇa uvāca ,
na rājñāṁ pratigṛhṇāmi śakto'haṁ svasya mārgaṇe ,
saiva gaurdīyatāṁ śīghraṁ mameti madhusūdana.
18. brāhmaṇaḥ uvāca na rājñām pratigṛhṇāmi śaktaḥ aham svasya
mārgaṇe sā eva gauḥ dīyatām śīghram mama iti madhusūdana
18. brāhmaṇaḥ uvāca: na rājñām pratigṛhṇāmi.
aham svasya mārgaṇe śaktaḥ (asmi).
he madhusūdana,
sā eva gauḥ mama śīghram dīyatām! iti.
18. The Brahmin said: 'I do not accept anything from kings; I am capable of acquiring my own needs. O Madhusūdana (Kṛṣṇa), let that very cow be given to me quickly!'
रुक्ममश्वांश्च ददतो रजतं स्यन्दनांस्तथा ।
न जग्राह ययौ चापि तदा स ब्राह्मणर्षभः ॥१९॥
19. rukmamaśvāṁśca dadato rajataṁ syandanāṁstathā ,
na jagrāha yayau cāpi tadā sa brāhmaṇarṣabhaḥ.
19. rukmaṃ aśvān ca dadato rajataṃ syandanān tathā
na jagrāha yayau ca api tadā saḥ brāhmaṇarṣabhaḥ
19. saḥ brāhmaṇarṣabhaḥ rukmaṃ aśvān ca rajataṃ
syandanān tathā dadato api tadā na jagrāha ca yayau
19. When gold, horses, silver, and chariots were being offered, that most excellent Brahmin (brāhmaṇarṣabha) did not accept them and departed.
एतस्मिन्नेव काले तु चोदितः कालधर्मणा ।
पितृलोकमहं प्राप्य धर्मराजमुपागमम् ॥२०॥
20. etasminneva kāle tu coditaḥ kāladharmaṇā ,
pitṛlokamahaṁ prāpya dharmarājamupāgamam.
20. etasmin eva kāle tu coditaḥ kāladharmaṇā
pitṛlokam aham prāpya dharmarājam upāgamam
20. tu etasmin eva kāle kāladharmaṇā coditaḥ
aham pitṛlokam prāpya dharmarājam upāgamam
20. Precisely at that time, impelled by the natural law (dharma) of time, I reached the world of the ancestors and approached Yama, the king of natural law (dharma).
यमस्तु पूजयित्वा मां ततो वचनमब्रवीत् ।
नान्तः संख्यायते राजंस्तव पुण्यस्य कर्मणः ॥२१॥
21. yamastu pūjayitvā māṁ tato vacanamabravīt ,
nāntaḥ saṁkhyāyate rājaṁstava puṇyasya karmaṇaḥ.
21. yamaḥ tu pūjayitvā mām tataḥ vacanam abravīt na
antaḥ saṃkhyāyate rājan tava puṇyasya karmaṇaḥ
21. tu yamaḥ mām pūjayitvā tataḥ vacanam abravīt
rājan tava puṇyasya karmaṇaḥ antaḥ na saṃkhyāyate
21. Yama, having honored me, then spoke these words: "O King, there is no end to your meritorious actions (karma)."
अस्ति चैव कृतं पापमज्ञानात्तदपि त्वया ।
चरस्व पापं पश्चाद्वा पूर्वं वा त्वं यथेच्छसि ॥२२॥
22. asti caiva kṛtaṁ pāpamajñānāttadapi tvayā ,
carasva pāpaṁ paścādvā pūrvaṁ vā tvaṁ yathecchasi.
22. asti ca eva kṛtam pāpam ajñānāt tat api tvayā
carasva pāpam paścāt vā pūrvam vā tvam yathā icchasi
22. ca eva tvayā ajñānāt tat pāpam kṛtam api asti tvam
yathā icchasi pāpam paścāt vā pūrvam vā carasva
22. However, there is also a sin (pāpa) committed by you, albeit unknowingly. You may undergo the consequence of this sin (pāpa) either later or earlier, as you desire.
रक्षितास्मीति चोक्तं ते प्रतिज्ञा चानृता तव ।
ब्राह्मणस्वस्य चादानं त्रिविधस्ते व्यतिक्रमः ॥२३॥
23. rakṣitāsmīti coktaṁ te pratijñā cānṛtā tava ,
brāhmaṇasvasya cādānaṁ trividhaste vyatikramaḥ.
23. rakṣitā asmi iti ca uktam te pratijñā ca anṛtā tava
brāhmaṇasvasya ca ādānam trividhaḥ te vyatikramaḥ
23. te rakṣitā asmi iti ca uktam,
tava pratijñā ca anṛtā,
brāhmaṇasvasya ca ādānam.
te trividhaḥ vyatikramaḥ.
23. You were told, 'I am protected.' Yet your promise is false, and the appropriation of a brahmin's property. These three constitute your transgressions.
पूर्वं कृच्छ्रं चरिष्येऽहं पश्चाच्छुभमिति प्रभो ।
धर्मराजं ब्रुवन्नेवं पतितोऽस्मि महीतले ॥२४॥
24. pūrvaṁ kṛcchraṁ cariṣye'haṁ paścācchubhamiti prabho ,
dharmarājaṁ bruvannevaṁ patito'smi mahītale.
24. pūrvam kṛcchram cariṣye aham paścāt śubham iti
prabho dharmarājam bruvan evam patitaḥ asmi mahītale
24. prabho,
aham pūrvam kṛcchram cariṣye,
paścāt śubham iti dharmarājam bruvan evam,
mahītale patitaḥ asmi.
24. O Lord, I had declared, 'First I will undertake penance, and then auspiciousness will follow.' Having spoken thus to Dharmarāja, I have now fallen upon the ground.
अश्रौषं प्रच्युतश्चाहं यमस्योच्चैः प्रभाषतः ।
वासुदेवः समुद्धर्ता भविता ते जनार्दनः ॥२५॥
25. aśrauṣaṁ pracyutaścāhaṁ yamasyoccaiḥ prabhāṣataḥ ,
vāsudevaḥ samuddhartā bhavitā te janārdanaḥ.
25. aśrauṣam pracyutaḥ ca aham yamasya uccaiḥ prabhāṣataḥ
vāsudevaḥ samuddhartā bhavitā te janārdanaḥ
25. ca aham pracyutaḥ,
yamasya uccaiḥ prabhāṣataḥ aśrauṣam: te vāsudevaḥ janārdanaḥ samuddhartā bhavitā.
25. And I, having been cast down, heard Yama speaking loudly: 'Vāsudeva, Janārdana, will be your deliverer!'
पूर्णे वर्षसहस्रान्ते क्षीणे कर्मणि दुष्कृते ।
प्राप्स्यसे शाश्वताँल्लोकाञ्जितान्स्वेनैव कर्मणा ॥२६॥
26. pūrṇe varṣasahasrānte kṣīṇe karmaṇi duṣkṛte ,
prāpsyase śāśvatāँllokāñjitānsvenaiva karmaṇā.
26. pūrṇe varṣasahasrānte kṣīṇe karmaṇi duṣkṛte
prāpsyase śāśvatān lokān jitān svena eva karmaṇā
26. varṣasahasrānte pūrṇe,
duṣkṛte karmaṇi kṣīṇe,
svena eva karmaṇā jitān śāśvatān lokān prāpsyase.
26. At the completion of a full thousand years, when your accumulated evil (karma) has been exhausted, you will attain the eternal worlds, which were won by your very own actions (karma).
कूपेऽऽत्मानमधःशीर्षमपश्यं पतितं च ह ।
तिर्यग्योनिमनुप्राप्तं न तु मामजहात्स्मृतिः ॥२७॥
27. kūpe''tmānamadhaḥśīrṣamapaśyaṁ patitaṁ ca ha ,
tiryagyonimanuprāptaṁ na tu māmajahātsmṛtiḥ.
27. kūpe ātmanam adhaḥśīrṣam apaśyam patitam ca ha
tiryagyonim anuprāptam na tu mām ajahāt smṛtiḥ
27. kūpe ātmanam adhaḥśīrṣam patitam apaśyam ca ha
tiryagyonim anuprāptam tu mām smṛtiḥ na ajahāt
27. I saw myself fallen headfirst into a well. Although I had attained a subhuman birth, my memory (smṛti) did not abandon me.
त्वया तु तारितोऽस्म्यद्य किमन्यत्र तपोबलात् ।
अनुजानीहि मां कृष्ण गच्छेयं दिवमद्य वै ॥२८॥
28. tvayā tu tārito'smyadya kimanyatra tapobalāt ,
anujānīhi māṁ kṛṣṇa gaccheyaṁ divamadya vai.
28. tvayā tu tāritaḥ asmi adya kim anyatra tapaḥ
balāt anujānīhi mām kṛṣṇa gaccheyam divam adya vai
28. tu tvayā adya tāritaḥ asmi kim anyatra tapaḥ
balāt kṛṣṇa mām anujānīhi adya vai divam gaccheyam
28. Indeed, by you, I have been delivered today. What else could [my] power of asceticism (tapas) achieve? Kṛṣṇa, permit me; I wish to go to heaven (divam) today.
अनुज्ञातः स कृष्णेन नमस्कृत्य जनार्दनम् ।
विमानं दिव्यमास्थाय ययौ दिवमरिंदम ॥२९॥
29. anujñātaḥ sa kṛṣṇena namaskṛtya janārdanam ,
vimānaṁ divyamāsthāya yayau divamariṁdama.
29. anujñātaḥ saḥ kṛṣṇena namaskṛtya janārdanam
vimānam divyam āsthāya yayau divam arimdam
29. kṛṣṇena anujñātaḥ saḥ janārdanam namaskṛtya
divyam vimānam āsthāya divam yayau arimdam
29. Having been permitted by Kṛṣṇa, and having saluted Janārdana, he ascended a divine aerial car and went to heaven (divam), O subduer of foes.
ततस्तस्मिन्दिवं प्राप्ते नृगे भरतसत्तम ।
वासुदेव इमं श्लोकं जगाद कुरुनन्दन ॥३०॥
30. tatastasmindivaṁ prāpte nṛge bharatasattama ,
vāsudeva imaṁ ślokaṁ jagāda kurunandana.
30. tataḥ tasmin divam prāpte nṛge bharatasattama
vāsudevaḥ imam ślokam jagāda kurunandana
30. tataḥ tasmin nṛge divam prāpte bharatasattama
vāsudevaḥ imam ślokam jagāda kurunandana
30. Then, when King Nṛga had attained heaven (divam), O best among the Bhāratas, Vāsudeva spoke this verse, O delight of the Kurus.
ब्राह्मणस्वं न हर्तव्यं पुरुषेण विजानता ।
ब्राह्मणस्वं हृतं हन्ति नृगं ब्राह्मणगौरिव ॥३१॥
31. brāhmaṇasvaṁ na hartavyaṁ puruṣeṇa vijānatā ,
brāhmaṇasvaṁ hṛtaṁ hanti nṛgaṁ brāhmaṇagauriva.

31. A discerning person should not seize the property of a brahmin. Property belonging to a brahmin, when taken, destroys (the perpetrator), just as the brahmin's cow destroyed King Nṛga.
सतां समागमः सद्भिर्नाफलः पार्थ विद्यते ।
विमुक्तं नरकात्पश्य नृगं साधुसमागमात् ॥३२॥
32. satāṁ samāgamaḥ sadbhirnāphalaḥ pārtha vidyate ,
vimuktaṁ narakātpaśya nṛgaṁ sādhusamāgamāt.
32. satām samāgamaḥ sadbhiḥ na aphalaḥ pārtha vidyate
vimuktaṃ narakāt paśya nṛgaṃ sādhusamāgamāt
32. pārtha satām sadbhiḥ samāgamaḥ na aphalaḥ vidyate
narakāt vimuktaṃ nṛgaṃ sādhusamāgamāt paśya
32. O Pārtha, the association of the good with the virtuous is never fruitless. Behold Nṛga, who was liberated from hell due to the company of the righteous.
प्रदानं फलवत्तत्र द्रोहस्तत्र तथाफलः ।
अपचारं गवां तस्माद्वर्जयेत युधिष्ठिर ॥३३॥
33. pradānaṁ phalavattatra drohastatra tathāphalaḥ ,
apacāraṁ gavāṁ tasmādvarjayeta yudhiṣṭhira.
33. pradānaṃ phalavat tatra drohaḥ tatra tathāphalaḥ
apacāraṃ gavām tasmāt varjayeta yudhiṣṭhira
33. yudhiṣṭhira tatra pradānaṃ phalavat tatra drohaḥ
tathāphalaḥ tasmāt gavām apacāraṃ varjayeta
33. In this regard, giving (cows) is fruitful, while harming them leads to similar (negative) results. Therefore, O Yudhiṣṭhira, one should avoid any offense against cows.
