वैशंपायन उवाच ।
अथोपगम्य विदुरमपराह्णे जनार्दनः ।
पितृष्वसारं गोविन्दः सोऽभ्यगच्छदरिंदमः ॥१॥
1. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
athopagamya viduramaparāhṇe janārdanaḥ ,
pitṛṣvasāraṁ govindaḥ so'bhyagacchadariṁdamaḥ.

1. Vaiśampāyana said: Then, in the afternoon, Krishna (Govinda), who was Janārdana and the subduer of enemies (arindamaḥ), having approached Vidura, went to his paternal aunt (pitṛṣvasāram).
सा दृष्ट्वा कृष्णमायान्तं प्रसन्नादित्यवर्चसम् ।
कण्ठे गृहीत्वा प्राक्रोशत्पृथा पार्थाननुस्मरन् ॥२॥
2. sā dṛṣṭvā kṛṣṇamāyāntaṁ prasannādityavarcasam ,
kaṇṭhe gṛhītvā prākrośatpṛthā pārthānanusmaran.

2. Pṛthā, seeing Krishna approaching, whose brilliance was like the rising sun, embraced him by the neck and cried out, remembering her sons (Pārthas).
तेषां सत्त्ववतां मध्ये गोविन्दं सहचारिणम् ।
चिरस्य दृष्ट्वा वार्ष्णेयं बाष्पमाहारयत्पृथा ॥३॥
3. teṣāṁ sattvavatāṁ madhye govindaṁ sahacāriṇam ,
cirasya dṛṣṭvā vārṣṇeyaṁ bāṣpamāhārayatpṛthā.

3. Pṛthā, having seen Govinda, the Vārṣṇeya, her companion, after a long time, in the midst of those virtuous individuals, shed tears.
साब्रवीत्कृष्णमासीनं कृतातिथ्यं युधां पतिम् ।
बाष्पगद्गदपूर्णेन मुखेन परिशुष्यता ॥४॥
4. sābravītkṛṣṇamāsīnaṁ kṛtātithyaṁ yudhāṁ patim ,
bāṣpagadgadapūrṇena mukhena pariśuṣyatā.
4. sā abravīt kṛṣṇam āsīnam kṛtātithyam yudhām
patim bāṣpagadgadapūrṇena mukhena pariśuṣyatā
4. She spoke to Krishna, who was seated, having already received her hospitality, the lord of warriors, with a face withered and filled with tears and choked words.
ये ते बाल्यात्प्रभृत्येव गुरुशुश्रूषणे रताः ।
परस्परस्य सुहृदः संमताः समचेतसः ॥५॥
5. ye te bālyātprabhṛtyeva guruśuśrūṣaṇe ratāḥ ,
parasparasya suhṛdaḥ saṁmatāḥ samacetasaḥ.

5. Those individuals, who from childhood (bālya) itself were devoted to serving their preceptor (guru), who were friends to one another, esteemed, and of like mind -
निकृत्या भ्रंशिता राज्याज्जनार्हा निर्जनं गताः ।
विनीतक्रोधहर्षाश्च ब्रह्मण्याः सत्यवादिनः ॥६॥
6. nikṛtyā bhraṁśitā rājyājjanārhā nirjanaṁ gatāḥ ,
vinītakrodhaharṣāśca brahmaṇyāḥ satyavādinaḥ.
6. nikṛtyā bhraṃśitāḥ rājyāt janārhāḥ nirjanaṃ gatāḥ

6. Though deserving of honor, they were displaced from their kingdom by deceit and went to a desolate place. They had subdued their anger and joy, were devoted to sacred knowledge (brahman), and were truthful.
त्यक्त्वा प्रियसुखे पार्था रुदन्तीमपहाय माम् ।
अहार्षुश्च वनं यान्तः समूलं हृदयं मम ॥७॥
7. tyaktvā priyasukhe pārthā rudantīmapahāya mām ,
ahārṣuśca vanaṁ yāntaḥ samūlaṁ hṛdayaṁ mama.
7. tyaktvā priyasukhe pārthāḥ rudantīm apahāya mām
ahārṣuḥ ca vanaṃ yāntaḥ samūlaṃ hṛdayaṃ mama
7. Forsaking their dear pleasures, the Pārthas abandoned me, who was weeping. As they went to the forest, they carried away my heart completely, root and all.
अतदर्हा महात्मानः कथं केशव पाण्डवाः ।
ऊषुर्महावने तात सिंहव्याघ्रगजाकुले ॥८॥
8. atadarhā mahātmānaḥ kathaṁ keśava pāṇḍavāḥ ,
ūṣurmahāvane tāta siṁhavyāghragajākule.

ūṣuḥ mahāvane tāta siṃhavyāghragajākule
8. O Keśava, O dear one, how did the Pāṇḍavas, those great souls (mahātman) who were unworthy of such a fate, manage to live in that great forest, which was crowded with lions, tigers, and elephants?
बाला विहीनाः पित्रा ते मया सततलालिताः ।
अपश्यन्तः स्वपितरौ कथमूषुर्महावने ॥९॥
9. bālā vihīnāḥ pitrā te mayā satatalālitāḥ ,
apaśyantaḥ svapitarau kathamūṣurmahāvane.
9. bālāḥ vihīnāḥ pitrā te mayā satatalālitāḥ
apaśyantaḥ svapitarau kathaṃ ūṣuḥ mahāvane
9. How did those children, bereft of their father and constantly cherished by me, live in the great forest without seeing their own parents?
शङ्खदुन्दुभिनिर्घोषैर्मृदङ्गैर्वैणवैरपि ।
पाण्डवाः समबोध्यन्त बाल्यात्प्रभृति केशव ॥१०॥
10. śaṅkhadundubhinirghoṣairmṛdaṅgairvaiṇavairapi ,
pāṇḍavāḥ samabodhyanta bālyātprabhṛti keśava.
10. śankhadundubhinirghoṣaiḥ mṛdangaiḥ vaiṇavaiḥ api
pāṇḍavāḥ samabodhyanta bālyāt prabhṛti keśava
10. O Keśava, the Pāṇḍavas were awakened from their childhood onwards by the loud sounds of conch shells and kettle-drums, as well as by mṛdaṅgas and flutes.
ये स्म वारणशब्देन हयानां हेषितेन च ।
रथनेमिनिनादैश्च व्यबोध्यन्त सदा गृहे ॥११॥
11. ye sma vāraṇaśabdena hayānāṁ heṣitena ca ,
rathanemininādaiśca vyabodhyanta sadā gṛhe.
11. ye sma vāraṇaśabdena hayānām heṣitena ca
rathaneminīnādaiḥ ca vyabodhyanta sadā gṛhe
11. These are they who, in their home, were always awakened by the trumpeting of elephants, the neighing of horses, and the sounds of chariot wheels.
शङ्खभेरीनिनादेन वेणुवीणानुनादिना ।
पुण्याहघोषमिश्रेण पूज्यमाना द्विजातिभिः ॥१२॥
12. śaṅkhabherīninādena veṇuvīṇānunādinā ,
puṇyāhaghoṣamiśreṇa pūjyamānā dvijātibhiḥ.
12. śankhabherīnīnādena veṇuvīṇānunādinā
puṇyāhaghoṣamiśreṇa pūjyamānā dvijātibhiḥ
12. With the sounds of conches and kettle-drums, the resonant melodies of flutes and lutes, and mixed with the auspicious pronouncements of "Puṇyāha," Prosperity (śrī) was being honored by the twice-born (dvijātibhiḥ).
वस्त्रै रत्नैरलंकारैः पूजयन्तो द्विजन्मनः ।
गीर्भिर्मङ्गलयुक्ताभिर्ब्राह्मणानां महात्मनाम् ॥१३॥
13. vastrai ratnairalaṁkāraiḥ pūjayanto dvijanmanaḥ ,
gīrbhirmaṅgalayuktābhirbrāhmaṇānāṁ mahātmanām.
13. vastraiḥ ratnaiḥ alaṅkāraiḥ pūjayantaḥ dvijanmanaḥ
gīrbhiḥ maṅgalayuktābhiḥ brāhmaṇānām mahātmanām
13. (And the Pāṇḍavas were) honoring the twice-born (dvijanman) with clothes, jewels, and ornaments, and with the auspicious words of the great-souled (mahātman) brahmins.
अर्चितैरर्चनार्हैश्च स्तुवद्भिरभिनन्दिताः ।
प्रासादाग्रेष्वबोध्यन्त राङ्कवाजिनशायिनः ॥१४॥
14. arcitairarcanārhaiśca stuvadbhirabhinanditāḥ ,
prāsādāgreṣvabodhyanta rāṅkavājinaśāyinaḥ.
14. arcitaiḥ arcanārhaiḥ ca stuvadbhiḥ abhinanditāḥ
prāsādāgreṣu abodhyanta rāṅkavājinaśāyinaḥ
14. Lying on blankets of Rānku deer skin on palace rooftops, they were awakened, greeted by those who were honored and worthy of worship, and by those who offered praises.
ते नूनं निनदं श्रुत्वा श्वापदानां महावने ।
न स्मोपयान्ति निद्रां वै अतदर्हा जनार्दन ॥१५॥
15. te nūnaṁ ninadaṁ śrutvā śvāpadānāṁ mahāvane ,
na smopayānti nidrāṁ vai atadarhā janārdana.
15. te nūnam ninadam śrutvā śvāpadānām mahāvane
na sma upayānti nidrām vai atadarhā janārdana
15. O Janārdana, having heard the roars of wild animals in the great forest, they surely did not attain sleep, as they are truly undeserving of such a condition.
भेरीमृदङ्गनिनदैः शङ्खवैणवनिस्वनैः ।
स्त्रीणां गीतनिनादैश्च मधुरैर्मधुसूदन ॥१६॥
16. bherīmṛdaṅganinadaiḥ śaṅkhavaiṇavanisvanaiḥ ,
strīṇāṁ gītaninādaiśca madhurairmadhusūdana.
16. bherīmṛdaṅganinadaiḥ śaṅkhavaiṇavanisvanaiḥ
strīṇām gītaninādaiḥ ca madhuraiḥ madhusūdana
16. O Madhusūdana, [they were awakened] by the sounds of bherī and mṛdaṅga drums, by the notes of conchs and flutes, and by the sweet melodies of women's songs.
बन्दिमागधसूतैश्च स्तुवद्भिर्बोधिताः कथम् ।
महावने व्यबोध्यन्त श्वापदानां रुतेन ते ॥१७॥
17. bandimāgadhasūtaiśca stuvadbhirbodhitāḥ katham ,
mahāvane vyabodhyanta śvāpadānāṁ rutena te.
17. bandimāgadhasūtaiḥ ca stuvadbhiḥ bodhitāḥ katham
mahāvane vyabodhyanta śvāpadānām rutena te
17. How were they, who were [formerly] awakened by bards, panegyrists, and charioteers offering praises, awakened by the roars of wild animals in the great forest?
ह्रीमान्सत्यधृतिर्दान्तो भूतानामनुकम्पिता ।
कामद्वेषौ वशे कृत्वा सतां वर्त्मानुवर्तते ॥१८॥
18. hrīmānsatyadhṛtirdānto bhūtānāmanukampitā ,
kāmadveṣau vaśe kṛtvā satāṁ vartmānuvartate.
18. hriimān satyadhṛtiḥ dāntaḥ bhūtānām anukampitā
kāmadveṣau vaśe kṛtvā satām vartma anuvartate
18. He is modest, resolute in truth, self-controlled, and compassionate towards all beings. Having brought both desire and hatred under his control, he follows the path of the virtuous.
अम्बरीषस्य मान्धातुर्ययातेर्नहुषस्य च ।
भरतस्य दिलीपस्य शिबेरौशीनरस्य च ॥१९॥
19. ambarīṣasya māndhāturyayāternahuṣasya ca ,
bharatasya dilīpasya śiberauśīnarasya ca.
19. ambarīṣasya māndhātuḥ yayāteḥ nahuṣasya ca
bharatasya dilīpasya śibeḥ auśīnarasya ca
19. [He possesses virtues like those] of Ambarīṣa, Māndhātā, Yayāti, Nahuṣa, as well as Bharata, Dilīpa, and Śibi, the son of Uśīnara.
राजर्षीणां पुराणानां धुरं धत्ते दुरुद्वहाम् ।
शीलवृत्तोपसंपन्नो धर्मज्ञः सत्यसंगरः ॥२०॥
20. rājarṣīṇāṁ purāṇānāṁ dhuraṁ dhatte durudvahām ,
śīlavṛttopasaṁpanno dharmajñaḥ satyasaṁgaraḥ.
20. rājarṣīṇām purāṇānām dhuram dhatte durudvahām
śīlavṛttopasaṃpannaḥ dharmajñaḥ satyasaṅgaraḥ
20. He bears the difficult-to-sustain burden (responsibility) of the ancient royal sages (rājarṣis). He is endowed with good character and conduct, understands the natural law (dharma), and is true to his promises.
राजा सर्वगुणोपेतस्त्रैलोक्यस्यापि यो भवेत् ।
अजातशत्रुर्धर्मात्मा शुद्धजाम्बूनदप्रभः ॥२१॥
21. rājā sarvaguṇopetastrailokyasyāpi yo bhavet ,
ajātaśatrurdharmātmā śuddhajāmbūnadaprabhaḥ.
21. rājā sarvaguṇopetaḥ trailokyasya api yaḥ bhavet
ajātaśatruḥ dharmātmā śuddhajāmbūnadaprabhaḥ
21. He is a king endowed with all virtues, who could even be the ruler of the three worlds. He has no enemies (ajātaśatru), possesses a righteous character (dharmātman), and his radiance is like that of pure gold.
श्रेष्ठः कुरुषु सर्वेषु धर्मतः श्रुतवृत्ततः ।
प्रियदर्शनो दीर्घभुजः कथं कृष्ण युधिष्ठिरः ॥२२॥
22. śreṣṭhaḥ kuruṣu sarveṣu dharmataḥ śrutavṛttataḥ ,
priyadarśano dīrghabhujaḥ kathaṁ kṛṣṇa yudhiṣṭhiraḥ.
22. śreṣṭhaḥ kuruṣu sarveṣu dharmataḥ śrutavṛttataḥ
priyadarśanaḥ dīrghabhujaḥ katham kṛṣṇa yudhiṣṭhiraḥ
22. O Krishna, how is Yudhishthira, who is the foremost among all the Kurus by his adherence to natural law (dharma), by his learning and character, handsome in appearance, and long-armed?
यः स नागायुतप्राणो वातरंहा वृकोदरः ।
अमर्षी पाण्डवो नित्यं प्रियो भ्रातुः प्रियंकरः ॥२३॥
23. yaḥ sa nāgāyutaprāṇo vātaraṁhā vṛkodaraḥ ,
amarṣī pāṇḍavo nityaṁ priyo bhrātuḥ priyaṁkaraḥ.
23. yaḥ saḥ nāgāyutaprāṇaḥ vātaraṃhā vṛkodaraḥ amarṣī
pāṇḍavaḥ nityam priyaḥ bhrātuḥ priyaṃkaraḥ
23. He who possesses the strength of ten thousand elephants, is swift as the wind, has a wolf-like belly (Vṛkodara), is always intolerant of injustice, and is a Pandava, always dear and benevolent to his brother.
कीचकस्य च सज्ञातेर्यो हन्ता मधुसूदन ।
शूरः क्रोधवशानां च हिडिम्बस्य बकस्य च ॥२४॥
24. kīcakasya ca sajñāteryo hantā madhusūdana ,
śūraḥ krodhavaśānāṁ ca hiḍimbasya bakasya ca.
24. kīcakasya ca sajñāteḥ yaḥ hantā madhusūdana
śūraḥ krodhavaśānām ca hiḍimbasya bakasya ca
24. O Madhusudana, he who is the brave slayer of Kichaka and his kinsmen, and of the furious ones, Hidimba and Baka.
पराक्रमे शक्रसमो वायुवेगसमो जवे ।
महेश्वरसमः क्रोधे भीमः प्रहरतां वरः ॥२५॥
25. parākrame śakrasamo vāyuvegasamo jave ,
maheśvarasamaḥ krodhe bhīmaḥ praharatāṁ varaḥ.
25. parākrame śakrasamaḥ vāyuvegasamaḥ jave
maheśvarasamaḥ krodhe bhīmaḥ praharatām varaḥ
25. Bhima is equal to Indra in valor, equal to the speed of wind in swiftness, and equal to Maheshvara (Shiva) in anger; he is the best among attackers.
क्रोधं बलममर्षं च यो निधाय परंतपः ।
जितात्मा पाण्डवोऽमर्षी भ्रातुस्तिष्ठति शासने ॥२६॥
26. krodhaṁ balamamarṣaṁ ca yo nidhāya paraṁtapaḥ ,
jitātmā pāṇḍavo'marṣī bhrātustiṣṭhati śāsane.
26. krodham balam amarṣam ca yaḥ nidhāya paraṃtapaḥ
jitātmā pāṇḍavaḥ amarṣī bhrātuḥ tiṣṭhati śāsane
26. That tormentor of foes, the Pāṇḍava (Yudhiṣṭhira), who is self-controlled (jitātmā) and usually intolerant [of injustice] (amarṣī), has set aside his anger, strength, and indignation, and remains obedient to his brother's command.
तेजोराशिं महात्मानं बलौघममितौजसम् ।
भीमं प्रदर्शनेनापि भीमसेनं जनार्दन ।
तं ममाचक्ष्व वार्ष्णेय कथमद्य वृकोदरः ॥२७॥
27. tejorāśiṁ mahātmānaṁ balaughamamitaujasam ,
bhīmaṁ pradarśanenāpi bhīmasenaṁ janārdana ,
taṁ mamācakṣva vārṣṇeya kathamadya vṛkodaraḥ.
27. tejorāśim mahātmānam balaugham
amitaujasam bhīmam pradarśanena api
bhīmasenam janārdana tam mama
ācakṣva vārṣṇeya katham adya vṛkodaraḥ
27. O Janārdana, O Vārṣṇeya, tell me today how that Bhīmasena (Vṛkodara) is - that mass of splendor, that great-souled one, that flood of strength, that one of immeasurable energy, who is formidable even by his mere appearance.
आस्ते परिघबाहुः स मध्यमः पाण्डवोऽच्युत ।
अर्जुनेनार्जुनो यः स कृष्ण बाहुसहस्रिणा ।
द्विबाहुः स्पर्धते नित्यमतीतेनापि केशव ॥२८॥
28. āste parighabāhuḥ sa madhyamaḥ pāṇḍavo'cyuta ,
arjunenārjuno yaḥ sa kṛṣṇa bāhusahasriṇā ,
dvibāhuḥ spardhate nityamatītenāpi keśava.
28. āste parighabāhuḥ sa madhyamaḥ
pāṇḍavaḥ acyuta arjunena arjunaḥ yaḥ
sa kṛṣṇa bāhusahasriṇā dvibāhuḥ
spardhate nityam atītena api keśava
28. O Acyuta, how is that middle Pāṇḍava (Bhīma), whose arms are like iron clubs, today? And, O Kṛṣṇa, O Keśava, how is that Arjuna, the two-armed one, who constantly competes even with the deceased thousand-armed Kārtavīrya Arjuna?
क्षिपत्येकेन वेगेन पञ्च बाणशतानि यः ।
इष्वस्त्रे सदृशो राज्ञः कार्तवीर्यस्य पाण्डवः ॥२९॥
29. kṣipatyekena vegena pañca bāṇaśatāni yaḥ ,
iṣvastre sadṛśo rājñaḥ kārtavīryasya pāṇḍavaḥ.
29. kṣipati ekena vegena pañca bāṇaśatāni yaḥ
iṣvastre sadṛśaḥ rājñaḥ kārtavīryasya pāṇḍavaḥ
29. That Pāṇḍava (Arjuna), who discharges five hundred arrows with a single swift motion, is equal to King Kārtavīrya in the skill of archery.
तेजसादित्यसदृशो महर्षिप्रतिमो दमे ।
क्षमया पृथिवीतुल्यो महेन्द्रसमविक्रमः ॥३०॥
30. tejasādityasadṛśo maharṣipratimo dame ,
kṣamayā pṛthivītulyo mahendrasamavikramaḥ.
30. tejasā ādityasadṛśaḥ maharṣipratimaḥ dame
kṣamayā pṛthivītulyaḥ mahendrasamavikramaḥ
30. He is like the sun in splendor, equal to a great sage in self-control, like the earth in patience, and equal to the great Indra in valor.
आधिराज्यं महद्दीप्तं प्रथितं मधुसूदन ।
आहृतं येन वीर्येण कुरूणां सर्वराजसु ॥३१॥
31. ādhirājyaṁ mahaddīptaṁ prathitaṁ madhusūdana ,
āhṛtaṁ yena vīryeṇa kurūṇāṁ sarvarājasu.
31. ādhirājyam mahat dīptam prathitam madhusūdana
āhṛtam yena vīryeṇa kurūṇām sarvarājasu
31. O Madhusūdana, (he) by whose valor the great, splendid, and renowned supreme sovereignty was acquired among all the kings of the Kurus.
यस्य बाहुबलं घोरं कौरवाः पर्युपासते ।
स सर्वरथिनां श्रेष्ठः पाण्डवः सत्यविक्रमः ॥३२॥
32. yasya bāhubalaṁ ghoraṁ kauravāḥ paryupāsate ,
sa sarvarathināṁ śreṣṭhaḥ pāṇḍavaḥ satyavikramaḥ.
32. yasya bāhubalam ghoram kauravāḥ paryupāsate sa
sarvarathinām śreṣṭhaḥ pāṇḍavaḥ satyavikramaḥ
32. The Kauravas recognize his formidable might; he is the foremost among all charioteers, that Pāṇḍava of true valor.
योऽपाश्रयः पाण्डवानां देवानामिव वासवः ।
स ते भ्राता सखा चैव कथमद्य धनंजयः ॥३३॥
33. yo'pāśrayaḥ pāṇḍavānāṁ devānāmiva vāsavaḥ ,
sa te bhrātā sakhā caiva kathamadya dhanaṁjayaḥ.
33. yaḥ apāśrayaḥ pāṇḍavānām devānām iva vāsavaḥ sa
te bhrātā sakhā ca eva katham adya dhanañjayaḥ
33. He who is the refuge of the Pāṇḍavas, just as Vāsava (Indra) is the refuge of the gods - how is it that he, your brother and friend, Dhananjaya, is (treated thus) today?
दयावान्सर्वभूतेषु ह्रीनिषेधो महास्त्रवित् ।
मृदुश्च सुकुमारश्च धार्मिकश्च प्रियश्च मे ॥३४॥
34. dayāvānsarvabhūteṣu hrīniṣedho mahāstravit ,
mṛduśca sukumāraśca dhārmikaśca priyaśca me.
34. dayāvān sarvabhūteṣu hrīniṣedhaḥ mahāstravit
mṛduḥ ca sukumāraḥ ca dhārmikaḥ ca priyaḥ ca me
34. He is compassionate towards all beings, restrained by modesty, a master of great weapons, gentle, very delicate, righteous (dhārmika), and dear to me.
सहदेवो महेष्वासः शूरः समितिशोभनः ।
भ्रातॄणां कृष्ण शुश्रूषुर्धर्मार्थकुशलो युवा ॥३५॥
35. sahadevo maheṣvāsaḥ śūraḥ samitiśobhanaḥ ,
bhrātṝṇāṁ kṛṣṇa śuśrūṣurdharmārthakuśalo yuvā.
35. sahadevaḥ maheṣvāsaḥ śūraḥ samitiśobhanaḥ
bhrātṝṇām kṛṣṇa śuśrūṣuḥ dharmārthakuśalaḥ yuvā
35. O Kṛṣṇa, Sahadeva is a great archer, heroic, glorious in battle, obedient to his brothers, skilled in righteousness (dharma) and material prosperity (artha), and youthful.
सदैव सहदेवस्य भ्रातरो मधुसूदन ।
वृत्तं कल्याणवृत्तस्य पूजयन्ति महात्मनः ॥३६॥
36. sadaiva sahadevasya bhrātaro madhusūdana ,
vṛttaṁ kalyāṇavṛttasya pūjayanti mahātmanaḥ.

36. O Madhusūdana, the brothers always honor the noble conduct of that great-souled (mahātman) Sahadeva, who possesses auspicious character.
ज्येष्ठापचायिनं वीरं सहदेवं युधां पतिम् ।
शुश्रूषुं मम वार्ष्णेय माद्रीपुत्रं प्रचक्ष्व मे ॥३७॥
37. jyeṣṭhāpacāyinaṁ vīraṁ sahadevaṁ yudhāṁ patim ,
śuśrūṣuṁ mama vārṣṇeya mādrīputraṁ pracakṣva me.
37. jyeṣṭhāpacāyinam vīram sahadevam yudhām patim
śuśrūṣum mama vārṣṇeya mādrīputram pracakṣva me
37. O Vārṣṇeya, describe to me Sahadeva, Mādri's son, who honors his elders, is brave, the lord of battles, and obedient to me.
सुकुमारो युवा शूरो दर्शनीयश्च पाण्डवः ।
भ्रातॄणां कृष्ण सर्वेषां प्रियः प्राणो बहिश्चरः ॥३८॥
38. sukumāro yuvā śūro darśanīyaśca pāṇḍavaḥ ,
bhrātṝṇāṁ kṛṣṇa sarveṣāṁ priyaḥ prāṇo bahiścaraḥ.
38. sukumāraḥ yuvā śūraḥ darśanīyaḥ ca pāṇḍavaḥ |

38. O Kṛṣṇa, the Pāṇḍava prince Nakula is very delicate, young, heroic, and handsome. He is the dear and outwardly moving life-breath of all his brothers.
चित्रयोधी च नकुलो महेष्वासो महाबलः ।
कच्चित्स कुशली कृष्ण वत्सो मम सुखैधितः ॥३९॥
39. citrayodhī ca nakulo maheṣvāso mahābalaḥ ,
kaccitsa kuśalī kṛṣṇa vatso mama sukhaidhitaḥ.
39. citrayodhī ca nakulaḥ mahāiṣvāsaḥ mahābalaḥ |
kaccit sa kuśalī kṛṣṇa vatsaḥ mama sukhaiditaḥ
39. Nakula is also a skilled fighter, a great archer, and immensely powerful. O Kṛṣṇa, I hope that son of mine, who was raised in comfort, is well.
सुखोचितमदुःखार्हं सुकुमारं महारथम् ।
अपि जातु महाबाहो पश्येयं नकुलं पुनः ॥४०॥
40. sukhocitamaduḥkhārhaṁ sukumāraṁ mahāratham ,
api jātu mahābāho paśyeyaṁ nakulaṁ punaḥ.
40. sukha-ucitam aduḥkha-arham sukumāram mahāratham
| api jātu mahābāho paśyeyam nakulam punaḥ
40. O mighty-armed one, will I ever again see Nakula, who is accustomed to comfort, undeserving of suffering, very delicate, and a great chariot-warrior?
पक्ष्मसंपातजे काले नकुलेन विनाकृता ।
न लभामि सुखं वीर साद्य जीवामि पश्य माम् ॥४१॥
41. pakṣmasaṁpātaje kāle nakulena vinākṛtā ,
na labhāmi sukhaṁ vīra sādya jīvāmi paśya mām.
41. pakṣa-saṃpāta-je kāle nakulena vinākṛtā | na
labhāmi sukham vīra sā adya jīvāmi paśya mām
41. O hero, separated from Nakula, even for the time it takes for an eyelash to fall, I do not find happiness. See me, I am barely alive today.
सर्वैः पुत्रैः प्रियतमा द्रौपदी मे जनार्दन ।
कुलीना शीलसंपन्ना सर्वैः समुदिता गुणैः ॥४२॥
42. sarvaiḥ putraiḥ priyatamā draupadī me janārdana ,
kulīnā śīlasaṁpannā sarvaiḥ samuditā guṇaiḥ.

42. O Janārdana, among all my sons, Draupadī is most beloved to me. She is of noble lineage, endowed with excellent conduct, and adorned with all virtues.
पुत्रलोकात्पतिलोकान्वृण्वाना सत्यवादिनी ।
प्रियान्पुत्रान्परित्यज्य पाण्डवानन्वपद्यत ॥४३॥
43. putralokātpatilokānvṛṇvānā satyavādinī ,
priyānputrānparityajya pāṇḍavānanvapadyata.

43. She, who spoke the truth, chose the realm of her husbands over the realm of her sons, and abandoning her beloved sons, she followed the Pāṇḍavas.
महाभिजनसंपन्ना सर्वकामैः सुपूजिता ।
ईश्वरी सर्वकल्याणी द्रौपदी कथमच्युत ॥४४॥
44. mahābhijanasaṁpannā sarvakāmaiḥ supūjitā ,
īśvarī sarvakalyāṇī draupadī kathamacyuta.

44. O Acyuta, how can Draupadī, who is endowed with a great lineage, highly honored with all desirable things, a sovereign queen, and completely auspicious, be suffering?
पतिभिः पञ्चभिः शूरैरग्निकल्पैः प्रहारिभिः ।
उपपन्ना महेष्वासैर्द्रौपदी दुःखभागिनी ॥४५॥
45. patibhiḥ pañcabhiḥ śūrairagnikalpaiḥ prahāribhiḥ ,
upapannā maheṣvāsairdraupadī duḥkhabhāginī.
45. patibhiḥ pañcabhiḥ śūraiḥ agnikalpaiḥ prahāribhiḥ
upapannā maheṣvāsaiḥ draupadī duḥkhabhāginī
45. How can Draupadī, who is united with five heroic husbands – formidable like fire, skilled in striking, and great archers – be a partaker of sorrow?
चतुर्दशमिमं वर्षं यन्नापश्यमरिंदम ।
पुत्राधिभिः परिद्यूनां द्रौपदीं सत्यवादिनीम् ॥४६॥
46. caturdaśamimaṁ varṣaṁ yannāpaśyamariṁdama ,
putrādhibhiḥ paridyūnāṁ draupadīṁ satyavādinīm.
46. caturdaśam imam varṣam yat na apaśyam ariṃdam
putrādhibhiḥ paridyūnām draupadīm satyavādinīm
46. O subduer of enemies (ariṃdama), for this fourteenth year, I did not see the truthful Draupadī, who was greatly distressed by the mental anxieties concerning her sons.
न नूनं कर्मभिः पुण्यैरश्नुते पुरुषः सुखम् ।
द्रौपदी चेत्तथावृत्ता नाश्नुते सुखमव्ययम् ॥४७॥
47. na nūnaṁ karmabhiḥ puṇyairaśnute puruṣaḥ sukham ,
draupadī cettathāvṛttā nāśnute sukhamavyayam.
47. na nūnam karmabhiḥ puṇyaiḥ aśnute puruṣaḥ sukham
draupadī cet tathāvṛttā na aśnute sukham avyayam
47. Surely, a person (puruṣa) does not attain happiness (sukha) through meritorious actions (karma), if Draupadī, despite her virtuous conduct, does not experience imperishable happiness.
न प्रियो मम कृष्णाय बीभत्सुर्न युधिष्ठिरः ।
भीमसेनो यमौ वापि यदपश्यं सभागताम् ॥४८॥
48. na priyo mama kṛṣṇāya bībhatsurna yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ,
bhīmaseno yamau vāpi yadapaśyaṁ sabhāgatām.
48. na priyaḥ mama kṛṣṇāya bībhatsuḥ na yudhiṣṭhiraḥ
bhīmasenaḥ yamau vā api yat apaśyam sabhāgatām
48. Draupadī (Kṛṣṇā) is no longer dear to me, nor Arjuna (Bībhatsu), nor Yudhiṣṭhira, Bhīmasena, or even the twins, because I saw her subjected to public humiliation in the assembly (sabhā).
न मे दुःखतरं किंचिद्भूतपूर्वं ततोऽधिकम् ।
यद्द्रौपदीं निवातस्थां श्वशुराणां समीपगाम् ॥४९॥
49. na me duḥkhataraṁ kiṁcidbhūtapūrvaṁ tato'dhikam ,
yaddraupadīṁ nivātasthāṁ śvaśurāṇāṁ samīpagām.
49. na me duḥkhataram kiñcit bhūtapūrvam tataḥ adhikam
yat draupadīm nivātasthām śvaśurāṇām samīpagām
49. Nothing more painful or greater than that has ever existed for me, than that I saw Draupadī standing helpless and exposed near her fathers-in-law (śvaśura).
आनायितामनार्येण क्रोधलोभानुवर्तिना ।
सर्वे प्रैक्षन्त कुरव एकवस्त्रां सभागताम् ॥५०॥
50. ānāyitāmanāryeṇa krodhalobhānuvartinā ,
sarve praikṣanta kurava ekavastrāṁ sabhāgatām.

praikṣanta kuravaḥ ekavastrām sabhāgatām
50. All the Kurus in the assembly watched her, clad in a single garment, as she was brought there by the ignoble one, who was driven by anger and greed.
तत्रैव धृतराष्ट्रश्च महाराजश्च बाह्लिकः ।
कृपश्च सोमदत्तश्च निर्विण्णाः कुरवस्तथा ॥५१॥
51. tatraiva dhṛtarāṣṭraśca mahārājaśca bāhlikaḥ ,
kṛpaśca somadattaśca nirviṇṇāḥ kuravastathā.
51. tatra eva dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ ca mahārājaḥ ca bāhlikaḥ
kṛpaḥ ca somadattaḥ ca nirviṇṇāḥ kuravaḥ tathā
51. Even there in the assembly, Dhritarashtra, the great king Bahlika, Kripa, and Somadatta, along with other Kurus, were all dejected.
तस्यां संसदि सर्वस्यां क्षत्तारं पूजयाम्यहम् ।
वृत्तेन हि भवत्यार्यो न धनेन न विद्यया ॥५२॥
52. tasyāṁ saṁsadi sarvasyāṁ kṣattāraṁ pūjayāmyaham ,
vṛttena hi bhavatyāryo na dhanena na vidyayā.
52. tasyām saṃsadi sarvasyām kṣattāram pūjayāmi aham
vṛttena hi bhavati āryaḥ na dhanena na vidyayā
52. In that entire assembly, I honor the charioteer (kṣattā). For truly, a person becomes noble (ārya) by their character (vṛttena), not by wealth, nor by knowledge.
तस्य कृष्ण महाबुद्धेर्गम्भीरस्य महात्मनः ।
क्षत्तुः शीलमलंकारो लोकान्विष्टभ्य तिष्ठति ॥५३॥
53. tasya kṛṣṇa mahābuddhergambhīrasya mahātmanaḥ ,
kṣattuḥ śīlamalaṁkāro lokānviṣṭabhya tiṣṭhati.
53. tasya kṛṣṇa mahābuddheḥ gambhīrasya mahātmanaḥ
kṣattuḥ śīlam alaṅkāraḥ lokān viṣṭabhya tiṣṭhati
53. O Kṛṣṇa, the character (śīlam) of that highly intelligent, profound, and great-souled charioteer (kṣattā) is an ornament that sustains and pervades the worlds (lokān).
सा शोकार्ता च हृष्टा च दृष्ट्वा गोविन्दमागतम् ।
नानाविधानि दुःखानि सर्वाण्येवान्वकीर्तयत् ॥५४॥
54. sā śokārtā ca hṛṣṭā ca dṛṣṭvā govindamāgatam ,
nānāvidhāni duḥkhāni sarvāṇyevānvakīrtayat.
54. sā śokā-ārtā ca hṛṣṭā ca dṛṣṭvā govindam āgatam
nānā-vidhāni duḥkhāni sarvāṇi eva anvakīrtayat
54. She, both distressed by grief and joyful upon seeing Govinda (Kṛṣṇa) arrive, recounted all her various kinds of sufferings.
पूर्वैराचरितं यत्तत्कुराजभिररिंदम ।
अक्षद्यूतं मृगवधः कच्चिदेषां सुखावहम् ॥५५॥
55. pūrvairācaritaṁ yattatkurājabhirariṁdama ,
akṣadyūtaṁ mṛgavadhaḥ kaccideṣāṁ sukhāvaham.
55. pūrvaiḥ ācaritam yat tat ku-rājabhiḥ arim-dama
akṣa-dyūtam mṛga-vadhaḥ kaccit eṣām sukha-āvaham
55. O subduer of enemies (Kṛṣṇa), that which was practiced by previous bad kings - the dice game and hunting - is it truly conducive to the happiness of these (Pāṇḍavas)?
तन्मां दहति यत्कृष्णा सभायां कुरुसंनिधौ ।
धार्तराष्ट्रैः परिक्लिष्टा यथा नकुशलं तथा ॥५६॥
56. tanmāṁ dahati yatkṛṣṇā sabhāyāṁ kurusaṁnidhau ,
dhārtarāṣṭraiḥ parikliṣṭā yathā nakuśalaṁ tathā.
56. tat mām dahati yat kṛṣṇā sabhāyām kuru-saṃnidau
dhārtarāṣṭraiḥ parikliṣṭā yathā na kuśalam tathā
56. O Kṛṣṇa, that which burns me is how I was greatly tormented by the Dhārtarāṣṭras in the assembly, in the presence of the Kurus, in such a way that I was not at all well.
निर्वासनं च नगरात्प्रव्रज्या च परंतप ।
नानाविधानां दुःखानामावासोऽस्मि जनार्दन ।
अज्ञातचर्या बालानामवरोधश्च केशव ॥५७॥
57. nirvāsanaṁ ca nagarātpravrajyā ca paraṁtapa ,
nānāvidhānāṁ duḥkhānāmāvāso'smi janārdana ,
ajñātacaryā bālānāmavarodhaśca keśava.
57. nirvāsanam ca nagarāt pravrajyā ca
param-tapa nānā-vidhānām duḥkhānām
āvāsaḥ asmi janārdana ajñāta-caryā
bālānām avarodhaḥ ca keśava
57. O tormentor of foes (Kṛṣṇa), I am the very abode of various kinds of sufferings: exile from the city, wandering (in the forest), the incognito life of the Pāṇḍavas, and their confinement, O Janārdana, O Keśava.
न स्म क्लेशतमं मे स्यात्पुत्रैः सह परंतप ।
दुर्योधनेन निकृता वर्षमद्य चतुर्दशम् ॥५८॥
58. na sma kleśatamaṁ me syātputraiḥ saha paraṁtapa ,
duryodhanena nikṛtā varṣamadya caturdaśam.
58. na sma kleśatamam me syāt putraiḥ saha paraṃtapa
duryodhanena nikṛtā varṣam adya caturdaśam
58. O tormentor of foes, no suffering could be greater for me and my sons than what I have endured, being wronged by Duryodhana for fourteen years now.
दुःखादपि सुखं न स्याद्यदि पुण्यफलक्षयः ।
न मे विशेषो जात्वासीद्धार्तराष्ट्रेषु पाण्डवैः ॥५९॥
59. duḥkhādapi sukhaṁ na syādyadi puṇyaphalakṣayaḥ ,
na me viśeṣo jātvāsīddhārtarāṣṭreṣu pāṇḍavaiḥ.
59. duḥkhāt api sukham na syāt yadi puṇyaphala-kṣayaḥ
na me viśeṣaḥ jātu āsīt dhārtarāṣṭreṣu pāṇḍavaiḥ
59. If the fruits of merit are exhausted, happiness would not arise even from suffering. I have never made any distinction between the Dhārtarāṣṭras and the Pāṇḍavas.
तेन सत्येन कृष्ण त्वां हतामित्रं श्रिया वृतम् ।
अस्माद्विमुक्तं संग्रामात्पश्येयं पाण्डवैः सह ।
नैव शक्याः पराजेतुं सत्त्वं ह्येषां तथागतम् ॥६०॥
60. tena satyena kṛṣṇa tvāṁ hatāmitraṁ śriyā vṛtam ,
asmādvimuktaṁ saṁgrāmātpaśyeyaṁ pāṇḍavaiḥ saha ,
naiva śakyāḥ parājetuṁ sattvaṁ hyeṣāṁ tathāgatam.
60. tena satyena kṛṣṇa tvām hatāmitram
śriyā vṛtam asmāt vimuktam saṃgrāmāt
paśyeyam pāṇḍavaiḥ saha na eva śakyāḥ
parājetum sattvam hi eṣām tathāgatam
60. O Krishna, by that truth, may I see you, with your enemies slain, adorned with glory, and freed from this war, together with the Pāṇḍavas. For their inherent strength is such that they are certainly invincible.
पितरं त्वेव गर्हेयं नात्मानं न सुयोधनम् ।
येनाहं कुन्तिभोजाय धनं धूर्तैरिवार्पिता ॥६१॥
61. pitaraṁ tveva garheyaṁ nātmānaṁ na suyodhanam ,
yenāhaṁ kuntibhojāya dhanaṁ dhūrtairivārpitā.
61. pitaram tu eva garheyam na ātmānam na suyodhanam
yena aham kuntibhojāya dhanam dhūrtaiḥ iva arpitā
61. I would indeed blame only my father, neither my self (ātman) nor Suyodhana (Duryodhana), for it was by him that I was given to Kuntibhoja like wealth by deceivers.
बालां मामार्यकस्तुभ्यं क्रीडन्तीं कन्दुहस्तकाम् ।
अददात्कुन्तिभोजाय सखा सख्ये महात्मने ॥६२॥
62. bālāṁ māmāryakastubhyaṁ krīḍantīṁ kanduhastakām ,
adadātkuntibhojāya sakhā sakhye mahātmane.
62. bālām mām āryakaḥ tubhyam krīḍantīm kanduhastakām
adadāt kuntibhojāya sakhā sakhye mahātmane
62. My grandfather (Āryaka), as a friend, gave me, a young girl playing with a ball in my hand, to his great-souled friend Kuntibhoja.
साहं पित्रा च निकृता श्वशुरैश्च परंतप ।
अत्यन्तदुःखिता कृष्ण किं जीवितफलं मम ॥६३॥
63. sāhaṁ pitrā ca nikṛtā śvaśuraiśca paraṁtapa ,
atyantaduḥkhitā kṛṣṇa kiṁ jīvitaphalaṁ mama.
63. sā aham pitrā ca nikṛtā śvaśuraiḥ ca paraṃtapa
atyantaduḥkhitā kṛṣṇa kim jīvitaphalam mama
63. O Krishna, tormentor of foes (paraṃtapa), since I, dishonored by my father and also by my fathers-in-law, am exceedingly distressed, what purpose remains for my life?
यन्मा वागब्रवीन्नक्तं सूतके सव्यसाचिनः ।
पुत्रस्ते पृथिवीं जेता यशश्चास्य दिवं स्पृशेत् ॥६४॥
64. yanmā vāgabravīnnaktaṁ sūtake savyasācinaḥ ,
putraste pṛthivīṁ jetā yaśaścāsya divaṁ spṛśet.
64. yat mā vāk abravīt naktam sūtake savyasācinaḥ
putraḥ te pṛthivīm jetā yaśaḥ ca asya divam spṛśet
64. A divine voice (vāk) spoke to me at night, during Savyasācin's (Arjuna's) birth confinement (sūtaka), saying: "Your son will conquer the earth, and his fame will reach the heavens."
हत्वा कुरून्ग्रामजन्ये राज्यं प्राप्य धनंजयः ।
भ्रातृभिः सह कौन्तेयस्त्रीन्मेधानाहरिष्यति ॥६५॥
65. hatvā kurūngrāmajanye rājyaṁ prāpya dhanaṁjayaḥ ,
bhrātṛbhiḥ saha kaunteyastrīnmedhānāhariṣyati.
65. hatvā kurūn grāmajanye rājyam prāpya dhanaṃjayaḥ
bhrātṛbhiḥ saha kaunteya trīn medhān āhariṣyati
65. kaunteya dhanaṃjayaḥ kurūn grāmajanye hatvā rājyam

65. Having killed the Kurus in battle (grāmajanye), Dhanañjaya, after obtaining the kingdom, O son of Kunti (Kaunteya), will perform three Vedic rituals (medha) with his brothers.
नाहं तामभ्यसूयामि नमो धर्माय वेधसे ।
कृष्णाय महते नित्यं धर्मो धारयति प्रजाः ॥६६॥
66. nāhaṁ tāmabhyasūyāmi namo dharmāya vedhase ,
kṛṣṇāya mahate nityaṁ dharmo dhārayati prajāḥ.
66. na aham tām abhyasūyāmi namaḥ dharmāya vedhase
kṛṣṇāya mahate nityam dharmaḥ dhārayati prajāḥ
66. I do not envy her. Salutations to the ordaining principle (dharma) and to the great Kṛṣṇa always. Indeed, the natural law (dharma) sustains all beings.
धर्मश्चेदस्ति वार्ष्णेय तथा सत्यं भविष्यति ।
त्वं चापि तत्तथा कृष्ण सर्वं संपादयिष्यसि ॥६७॥
67. dharmaścedasti vārṣṇeya tathā satyaṁ bhaviṣyati ,
tvaṁ cāpi tattathā kṛṣṇa sarvaṁ saṁpādayiṣyasi.
67. dharmaḥ ced asti vārṣṇeya tathā satyam bhaviṣyati
tvam ca api tat tathā kṛṣṇa sarvam sampādayiṣyasi
67. O Vārṣṇeya, if the principle of natural law (dharma) truly exists, then it will come to pass as truth. And you, O Kṛṣṇa, will likewise accomplish everything.
न मां माधव वैधव्यं नार्थनाशो न वैरिता ।
तथा शोकाय भवति यथा पुत्रैर्विनाभवः ॥६८॥
68. na māṁ mādhava vaidhavyaṁ nārthanāśo na vairitā ,
tathā śokāya bhavati yathā putrairvinābhavaḥ.
68. na mām mādhava vaidhavyam na arthanāśaḥ na vairitā
tathā śokāya bhavati yathā putraiḥ vinābhavaḥ
68. O Mādhava, neither widowhood, nor the loss of wealth, nor enmity causes me such sorrow as the separation from my sons.
याहं गाण्डीवधन्वानं सर्वशस्त्रभृतां वरम् ।
धनंजयं न पश्यामि का शान्तिर्हृदयस्य मे ॥६९॥
69. yāhaṁ gāṇḍīvadhanvānaṁ sarvaśastrabhṛtāṁ varam ,
dhanaṁjayaṁ na paśyāmi kā śāntirhṛdayasya me.
69. yā aham gāṇḍīvadhanvānam sarvaśastrabhṛtām varam
dhanañjayam na paśyāmi kā śāntiḥ hṛdayasya me
69. I, who do not see Dhananjaya, the wielder of the Gāṇḍīva bow, the best among all weapon-bearers, what peace can there be for my heart?
इदं चतुर्दशं वर्षं यन्नापश्यं युधिष्ठिरम् ।
धनंजयं च गोविन्द यमौ तं च वृकोदरम् ॥७०॥
70. idaṁ caturdaśaṁ varṣaṁ yannāpaśyaṁ yudhiṣṭhiram ,
dhanaṁjayaṁ ca govinda yamau taṁ ca vṛkodaram.
70. idam caturdaśam varṣam yat na apaśyam yudhiṣṭhiram
dhanaṃjayam ca govinda yamau tam ca vṛkodaram
70. O Govinda, this is the fourteenth year during which I have not seen Yudhishthira, Dhananjaya, the two Yamas (Nakula and Sahadeva), and him, Vrikodara (Bhima).
जीवनाशं प्रनष्टानां श्राद्धं कुर्वन्ति मानवाः ।
अर्थतस्ते मम मृतास्तेषां चाहं जनार्दन ॥७१॥
71. jīvanāśaṁ pranaṣṭānāṁ śrāddhaṁ kurvanti mānavāḥ ,
arthataste mama mṛtāsteṣāṁ cāhaṁ janārdana.
71. jīvanāśam pranaṣṭānām śrāddham kurvanti mānavāḥ
arthataḥ te mama mṛtāḥ teṣām ca aham janārdana
71. Humans perform the śrāddha ritual for those who have utterly perished, marking the destruction of their lives. O Janardana, in essence, they are dead to me, and I am dead to them.
ब्रूया माधव राजानं धर्मात्मानं युधिष्ठिरम् ।
भूयांस्ते हीयते धर्मो मा पुत्रक वृथा कृथाः ॥७२॥
72. brūyā mādhava rājānaṁ dharmātmānaṁ yudhiṣṭhiram ,
bhūyāṁste hīyate dharmo mā putraka vṛthā kṛthāḥ.
72. brūyāḥ mādhava rājānam dharmātmānam yudhiṣṭhiram
bhūyān te hīyate dharmaḥ mā putraka vṛthā kṛthāḥ
72. O Madhava, you should tell King Yudhishthira, whose inner being (ātman) is aligned with (dharma) natural law: 'Much of your (dharma) natural law is diminishing. O dear son, do not act in vain!'
पराश्रया वासुदेव या जीवामि धिगस्तु माम् ।
वृत्तेः कृपणलब्धाया अप्रतिष्ठैव ज्यायसी ॥७३॥
73. parāśrayā vāsudeva yā jīvāmi dhigastu mām ,
vṛtteḥ kṛpaṇalabdhāyā apratiṣṭhaiva jyāyasī.
73. parāśrayā vāsudeva yā jīvāmi dhik astu mām
vṛtteḥ kṛpaṇalabdhāyāḥ apratiṣṭhā eva jyāyasī
73. O Vasudeva, shame upon me, who lives dependent on others! Indeed, a lack of firm standing is better than a livelihood obtained miserably.
अथो धनंजयं ब्रूया नित्योद्युक्तं वृकोदरम् ।
यदर्थं क्षत्रिया सूते तस्य कालोऽयमागतः ॥७४॥
74. atho dhanaṁjayaṁ brūyā nityodyuktaṁ vṛkodaram ,
yadarthaṁ kṣatriyā sūte tasya kālo'yamāgataḥ.
74. atho dhanaṃjayaṃ brūyā nitya udyuktaṃ vṛkodaram
yadarthaṃ kṣatriyā sūte tasya kālaḥ ayam āgataḥ
74. Now, you should tell Dhananjaya and Vṛkodara, who are ever-ready: 'The time has arrived for the very purpose for which a Kṣatriya woman gives birth.'
अस्मिंश्चेदागते काले कालो वोऽतिक्रमिष्यति ।
लोकसंभाविताः सन्तः सुनृशंसं करिष्यथ ॥७५॥
75. asmiṁścedāgate kāle kālo vo'tikramiṣyati ,
lokasaṁbhāvitāḥ santaḥ sunṛśaṁsaṁ kariṣyatha.
75. asmin cet āgate kāle kālaḥ vaḥ atikramiṣyati
lokasaṃbhāvitāḥ santaḥ sunṛśaṃsaṃ kariṣyatha
75. If this opportune moment, having arrived, passes you by, then you, despite being esteemed by people, will commit a great cruelty.
नृशंसेन च वो युक्तांस्त्यजेयं शाश्वतीः समाः ।
काले हि समनुप्राप्ते त्यक्तव्यमपि जीवितम् ॥७६॥
76. nṛśaṁsena ca vo yuktāṁstyajeyaṁ śāśvatīḥ samāḥ ,
kāle hi samanuprāpte tyaktavyamapi jīvitam.
76. nṛśaṃsena ca vaḥ yuktān tyajeyaṃ śāśvatīḥ samāḥ
kāle hi samanuprāpte tyaktavyam api jīvitam
76. And I would abandon you forever if you were to become associated with such cruelty. For indeed, when the opportune moment has fully arrived, even life itself must be relinquished.
माद्रीपुत्रौ च वक्तव्यौ क्षत्रधर्मरतौ सदा ।
विक्रमेणार्जितान्भोगान्वृणीतं जीवितादपि ॥७७॥
77. mādrīputrau ca vaktavyau kṣatradharmaratau sadā ,
vikrameṇārjitānbhogānvṛṇītaṁ jīvitādapi.
77. mādrīputrau ca vaktavyau kṣatradharmaratau sadā
vikrameṇa arjitān bhogān vṛṇītaṃ jīvitāt api
77. And the two sons of Mādrī, who are always devoted to the intrinsic nature (dharma) of a warrior, should be told: 'Choose the enjoyments gained through valor, even over life itself.'
विक्रमाधिगता ह्यर्थाः क्षत्रधर्मेण जीवतः ।
मनो मनुष्यस्य सदा प्रीणन्ति पुरुषोत्तम ॥७८॥
78. vikramādhigatā hyarthāḥ kṣatradharmeṇa jīvataḥ ,
mano manuṣyasya sadā prīṇanti puruṣottama.
78. vikramādhigatāḥ hi arthāḥ kṣatradharmeṇa jīvataḥ
manaḥ manuṣyasya sadā prīṇanti puruṣottama
78. O best among men (puruṣottama), possessions and objectives acquired through valor (vikrama) by a man who lives according to the constitution (dharma) of a kshatriya, indeed, always satisfy his mind.
गत्वा ब्रूहि महाबाहो सर्वशस्त्रभृतां वरम् ।
अर्जुनं पाण्डवं वीरं द्रौपद्याः पदवीं चर ॥७९॥
79. gatvā brūhi mahābāho sarvaśastrabhṛtāṁ varam ,
arjunaṁ pāṇḍavaṁ vīraṁ draupadyāḥ padavīṁ cara.
79. gatvā brūhi mahābāho sarvaśastrabhṛtām varam
arjunam pāṇḍavam vīram draupadyāḥ padavīm cara
79. O mighty-armed one (mahābāho), go and tell Arjuna, the heroic Pāṇḍava, who is the best among all weapon-bearers, to follow Draupadī's path (padavī).
विदितौ हि तवात्यन्तं क्रुद्धाविव यथान्तकौ ।
भीमार्जुनौ नयेतां हि देवानपि परां गतिम् ॥८०॥
80. viditau hi tavātyantaṁ kruddhāviva yathāntakau ,
bhīmārjunau nayetāṁ hi devānapi parāṁ gatim.
80. viditau hi tava atyantam kruddhāu iva yathā antakau
bhīmārjunau nayetām hi devān api parām gatim
80. Indeed, it is exceedingly well known to you that Bhīma and Arjuna, enraged like the two destroyers (Antaka), would certainly lead even the gods to the supreme state (gati).
तयोश्चैतदवज्ञानं यत्सा कृष्णा सभां गता ।
दुःशासनश्च कर्णश्च परुषाण्यभ्यभाषताम् ॥८१॥
81. tayoścaitadavajñānaṁ yatsā kṛṣṇā sabhāṁ gatā ,
duḥśāsanaśca karṇaśca paruṣāṇyabhyabhāṣatām.
81. tayoḥ ca etad avajñānam yat sā kṛṣṇā sabhām gatā
duḥśāsanaḥ ca karṇaḥ ca paruṣāṇi abhyabhāṣatām
81. And this was the disrespect (avajñāna) to those two (Bhīma and Arjuna), namely, that Draupadī (Kṛṣṇā) had to go to the assembly, and Duḥśāsana and Karṇa spoke harsh words to her.
दुर्योधनो भीमसेनमभ्यगच्छन्मनस्विनम् ।
पश्यतां कुरुमुख्यानां तस्य द्रक्ष्यति यत्फलम् ॥८२॥
82. duryodhano bhīmasenamabhyagacchanmanasvinam ,
paśyatāṁ kurumukhyānāṁ tasya drakṣyati yatphalam.
82. Duryodhanaḥ Bhīmasenam abhyagacchan manasvinam
paśyatām kurumukhyānām tasya drakṣyati yat phalam
82. Duryodhana, who confronted the proud Bhimasena while the chief Kurus watched, will certainly see the consequences of that (deed).
न हि वैरं समासाद्य प्रशाम्यति वृकोदरः ।
सुचिरादपि भीमस्य न हि वैरं प्रशाम्यति ।
यावदन्तं न नयति शात्रवाञ्शत्रुकर्शनः ॥८३॥
83. na hi vairaṁ samāsādya praśāmyati vṛkodaraḥ ,
sucirādapi bhīmasya na hi vairaṁ praśāmyati ,
yāvadantaṁ na nayati śātravāñśatrukarśanaḥ.
83. na hi vairam samāsādya praśāmyati
vṛkodaraḥ sucirāt api Bhīmasya na
hi vairam praśāmyati yāvat antam
na nayati śātravān śatrukārśanaḥ
83. Indeed, Vrikodara (Bhima) does not become calm when faced with hostility. Even after a very long time, Bhima's enmity certainly does not subside, not until the tormentor of enemies brings his foes to their ultimate end.
न दुःखं राज्यहरणं न च द्यूते पराजयः ।
प्रव्राजनं च पुत्राणां न मे तद्दुःखकारणम् ॥८४॥
84. na duḥkhaṁ rājyaharaṇaṁ na ca dyūte parājayaḥ ,
pravrājanaṁ ca putrāṇāṁ na me tadduḥkhakāraṇam.
84. na duḥkham rājyaharaṇam na ca dyūte parājayaḥ
pravrājanam ca putrāṇām na me tat duḥkhakāraṇam
84. The loss of the kingdom is not a source of sorrow, nor is defeat in gambling. The exile of my sons is also not a cause of distress for me.
यत्तु सा बृहती श्यामा एकवस्त्रा सभां गता ।
अशृणोत्परुषा वाचस्ततो दुःखतरं नु किम् ॥८५॥
85. yattu sā bṛhatī śyāmā ekavastrā sabhāṁ gatā ,
aśṛṇotparuṣā vācastato duḥkhataraṁ nu kim.
85. yat tu sā bṛhatī śyāmā ekavastrā sabhām gatā
aśṛṇot paruṣāḥ vācaḥ tataḥ duḥkhataram nu kim
85. But what was truly sorrowful was when that tall, dark-complexioned woman, clad in a single garment, was brought to the assembly and heard harsh words. Is there indeed anything more grievous than that?
स्त्रीधर्मिणी वरारोहा क्षत्रधर्मरता सदा ।
नाध्यगच्छत्तथा नाथं कृष्णा नाथवती सती ॥८६॥
86. strīdharmiṇī varārohā kṣatradharmaratā sadā ,
nādhyagacchattathā nāthaṁ kṛṣṇā nāthavatī satī.
86. strīdharmiṇī varārohā kṣatradharmaratā sadā na
adhyagacchat tathā nātham kṛṣṇā nāthavatī satī
86. Draupadī (Kṛṣṇā), a woman of beautiful hips, always observing her feminine duties (dharma) and devoted to the warrior's natural law (dharma), though possessing protectors (nāthavatī), still did not find a lord (nātha) [to save her] in such a plight.
यस्या मम सपुत्रायास्त्वं नाथो मधुसूदन ।
रामश्च बलिनां श्रेष्ठः प्रद्युम्नश्च महारथः ॥८७॥
87. yasyā mama saputrāyāstvaṁ nātho madhusūdana ,
rāmaśca balināṁ śreṣṭhaḥ pradyumnaśca mahārathaḥ.
87. yasyāḥ mama saputrāyāḥ tvam nāthaḥ madhusūdana
rāmaḥ ca balinām śreṣṭhaḥ pradyumnaḥ ca mahārathaḥ
87. O slayer of Madhu (Madhusūdana), you are the protector (nātha) of me, who has sons. And there is Rāma, the best among the strong, and Pradyumna, a great warrior.
साहमेवंविधं दुःखं सहेऽद्य पुरुषोत्तम ।
भीमे जीवति दुर्धर्षे विजये चापलायिनि ॥८८॥
88. sāhamevaṁvidhaṁ duḥkhaṁ sahe'dya puruṣottama ,
bhīme jīvati durdharṣe vijaye cāpalāyini.
88. sā aham evaṃvidham duḥkham sahe adya puruṣottama
bhīme jīvati durdharṣe vijaye ca apalāyini
88. O best among men (puruṣottama), I myself endure such sorrow today, even though the invincible Bhīma is alive, and Vijaya [Arjuna], who never flees (apalāyin), is also alive.
तत आश्वासयामास पुत्राधिभिरभिप्लुताम् ।
पितृष्वसारं शोचन्तीं शौरिः पार्थसखः पृथाम् ॥८९॥
89. tata āśvāsayāmāsa putrādhibhirabhiplutām ,
pitṛṣvasāraṁ śocantīṁ śauriḥ pārthasakhaḥ pṛthām.
89. tataḥ āśvāsāyāmāsa putrādhibhiḥ abhiplutām
pitṛṣvasāram śocantīm śauriḥ pārthasakhaḥ pṛthām
89. Then, Śauri (Kṛṣṇa), the friend of Arjuna (Pārtha), consoled his paternal aunt Pṛthā (Kuntī), who was grieving (śocantī) and overwhelmed (abhiplutā) by anxieties concerning her sons.
का नु सीमन्तिनी त्वादृग्लोकेष्वस्ति पितृष्वसः ।
शूरस्य राज्ञो दुहिता आजमीढकुलं गता ॥९०॥
90. kā nu sīmantinī tvādṛglokeṣvasti pitṛṣvasaḥ ,
śūrasya rājño duhitā ājamīḍhakulaṁ gatā.
90. kā nu sīmantinī tvādṛk lokeṣu asti pitṛṣvasaḥ
śūrasya rājñaḥ duhitā ājamīḍhakulam gatā
90. O paternal aunt, which lady in the world is like you? You are the daughter of a brave king and have joined the Ajamiḍha lineage.
महाकुलीना भवती ह्रदाद्ध्रदमिवागता ।
ईश्वरी सर्वकल्याणी भर्त्रा परमपूजिता ॥९१॥
91. mahākulīnā bhavatī hradāddhradamivāgatā ,
īśvarī sarvakalyāṇī bhartrā paramapūjitā.
91. mahākulīnā bhavatī hradāt hradam iva āgatā
īśvarī sarvakalyāṇī bhartrā paramapūjitā
91. Your honor is of noble lineage, having come as if from one deep lake to another. You are a powerful lady, entirely auspicious, and supremely honored by your husband.
वीरसूर्वीरपत्नी च सर्वैः समुदिता गुणैः ।
सुखदुःखे महाप्राज्ञे त्वादृशी सोढुमर्हति ॥९२॥
92. vīrasūrvīrapatnī ca sarvaiḥ samuditā guṇaiḥ ,
sukhaduḥkhe mahāprājñe tvādṛśī soḍhumarhati.
92. vīrasūḥ vīrapatnī ca sarvaiḥ samuditā guṇaiḥ
sukhaduḥkhe mahāprājñe tvādṛśī soḍhum arhati
92. You are the mother of heroes and the wife of a hero, endowed with all virtues. O greatly wise one, one like you is capable of enduring both joy and sorrow.
निद्रातन्द्री क्रोधहर्षौ क्षुत्पिपासे हिमातपौ ।
एतानि पार्था निर्जित्य नित्यं वीराः सुखे रताः ॥९३॥
93. nidrātandrī krodhaharṣau kṣutpipāse himātapau ,
etāni pārthā nirjitya nityaṁ vīrāḥ sukhe ratāḥ.
93. nidrātandrī krodhaharṣau kṣutpipāse himātapau
etāni pārtha nirjitya nityam vīrāḥ sukhe ratāḥ
93. O Arjuna (Pārtha), having conquered these - sleep and idleness, anger and joy, hunger and thirst, cold and heat - heroes always find delight in happiness.
त्यक्तग्राम्यसुखाः पार्था नित्यं वीरसुखप्रियाः ।
न ते स्वल्पेन तुष्येयुर्महोत्साहा महाबलाः ॥९४॥
94. tyaktagrāmyasukhāḥ pārthā nityaṁ vīrasukhapriyāḥ ,
na te svalpena tuṣyeyurmahotsāhā mahābalāḥ.
94. tyaktagrāmyasukhāḥ pārthāḥ nityam vīrasukhapriyāḥ
na te svalpena tuṣyeyuḥ mahotsāhāḥ mahābalāḥ
94. The Pāṇḍavas, who have given up ordinary pleasures and constantly cherish the joys of heroic deeds, possessing great enthusiasm and immense strength, would not be satisfied with little.
अन्तं धीरा निषेवन्ते मध्यं ग्राम्यसुखप्रियाः ।
उत्तमांश्च परिक्लेशान्भोगांश्चातीव मानुषान् ॥९५॥
95. antaṁ dhīrā niṣevante madhyaṁ grāmyasukhapriyāḥ ,
uttamāṁśca parikleśānbhogāṁścātīva mānuṣān.
95. antam dhīrāḥ niṣevante madhyam grāmyasukhapriyāḥ
uttamān ca parikleśān bhogān ca atīva mānuṣān
95. The resolute pursue the extreme (ultimate goal), while those fond of ordinary pleasures adhere to the middle path. (The resolute embrace) supreme hardships and also intensely human enjoyments.
अन्तेषु रेमिरे धीरा न ते मध्येषु रेमिरे ।
अन्तप्राप्तिं सुखामाहुर्दुःखमन्तरमन्तयोः ॥९६॥
96. anteṣu remire dhīrā na te madhyeṣu remire ,
antaprāptiṁ sukhāmāhurduḥkhamantaramantayoḥ.
96. anteṣu remire dhīrāḥ na te madhyeṣu remire
antaprāptim sukhām āhuḥ duḥkham antaram antayoḥ
96. The resolute delighted in the extremes; they did not delight in the middle paths. They declare the attainment of the ultimate goal to be happiness, and the state between the two extremes to be suffering.
अभिवादयन्ति भवतीं पाण्डवाः सह कृष्णया ।
आत्मानं च कुशलिनं निवेद्याहुरनामयम् ॥९७॥
97. abhivādayanti bhavatīṁ pāṇḍavāḥ saha kṛṣṇayā ,
ātmānaṁ ca kuśalinaṁ nivedyāhuranāmayam.
97. abhivādayanti bhavatīm pāṇḍavāḥ saha kṛṣṇayā
ātmānam ca kuśalinam nivedya āhuḥ anāmayam
97. The Pāṇḍavas, along with Kṛṣṇā, respectfully greet you. After declaring their own selves (ātman) to be well, they convey their state of good health.
अरोगान्सर्वसिद्धार्थान्क्षिप्रं द्रक्ष्यसि पाण्डवान् ।
ईश्वरान्सर्वलोकस्य हतामित्राञ्श्रिया वृतान् ॥९८॥
98. arogānsarvasiddhārthānkṣipraṁ drakṣyasi pāṇḍavān ,
īśvarānsarvalokasya hatāmitrāñśriyā vṛtān.
98. arogān sarvasiddhārthān kṣipram drakṣyasi pāṇḍavān
īśvarān sarvalokasya hatāmitrān śriyā vṛtān
98. You will quickly see the Pāṇḍavas: healthy, having achieved all their aims, rulers of all people, with their enemies slain, and adorned with prosperity.
एवमाश्वासिता कुन्ती प्रत्युवाच जनार्दनम् ।
पुत्राधिभिरभिध्वस्ता निगृह्याबुद्धिजं तमः ॥९९॥
99. evamāśvāsitā kuntī pratyuvāca janārdanam ,
putrādhibhirabhidhvastā nigṛhyābuddhijaṁ tamaḥ.
99. evam āśvāśitā kuntī prati uvāca janārdanam
putrādhibhiḥ abhidhvastā nigṛhya abuddhijaṃ tamaḥ
99. Thus comforted, Kunti, though afflicted by anxieties for her sons, controlled the darkness (tamas) born of ignorance and replied to Janārdana.
यद्यत्तेषां महाबाहो पथ्यं स्यान्मधुसूदन ।
यथा यथा त्वं मन्येथाः कुर्याः कृष्ण तथा तथा ॥१००॥
100. yadyatteṣāṁ mahābāho pathyaṁ syānmadhusūdana ,
yathā yathā tvaṁ manyethāḥ kuryāḥ kṛṣṇa tathā tathā.
100. yat yat teṣām mahābāho pathyam syāt madhusūdana
yathā yathā tvam manyethāḥ kuryāḥ kṛṣṇa tathā tathā
100. O mighty-armed Madhusūdana (Kṛṣṇa), whatever is beneficial for them, whatever you consider appropriate, O Kṛṣṇa, you should do accordingly.
अविलोपेन धर्मस्य अनिकृत्या परंतप ।
प्रभावज्ञास्मि ते कृष्ण सत्यस्याभिजनस्य च ॥१०१॥
101. avilopena dharmasya anikṛtyā paraṁtapa ,
prabhāvajñāsmi te kṛṣṇa satyasyābhijanasya ca.
101. avilopena dharmasya anikṛtyā paraṃtapa
prabhāvajñā asmi te kṛṣṇa satyasya abhijanasya ca
101. O tormentor of enemies (paraṃtapa), Kṛṣṇa, I am fully aware of your power (prabhāva), your truthfulness, and your noble lineage; therefore, act without violating the natural law (dharma) and without causing harm.
व्यवस्थायां च मित्रेषु बुद्धिविक्रमयोस्तथा ।
त्वमेव नः कुले धर्मस्त्वं सत्यं त्वं तपो महत् ॥१०२॥
102. vyavasthāyāṁ ca mitreṣu buddhivikramayostathā ,
tvameva naḥ kule dharmastvaṁ satyaṁ tvaṁ tapo mahat.
102. vyavasthāyām ca mitreṣu buddhivikramayoḥ tathā tvam
eva naḥ kule dharmaḥ tvam satyam tvam tapaḥ mahat
102. And in matters of governance, among friends, and regarding both intelligence and valor, you indeed are our family's righteousness (dharma), you are truth, and you are great austerity (tapas).
त्वं त्राता त्वं महद्ब्रह्म त्वयि सर्वं प्रतिष्ठितम् ।
यथैवात्थ तथैवैतत्त्वयि सत्यं भविष्यति ॥१०३॥
103. tvaṁ trātā tvaṁ mahadbrahma tvayi sarvaṁ pratiṣṭhitam ,
yathaivāttha tathaivaitattvayi satyaṁ bhaviṣyati.
103. tvam trātā tvam mahat brahma tvayi sarvam pratiṣṭhitam
yathā eva āttha tathā eva etat tvayi satyam bhaviṣyati
103. You are the protector, and you are the great cosmic principle (brahman). Everything is established in you. Just as you have spoken, so indeed will it truly come to pass through you.
तामामन्त्र्य च गोविन्दः कृत्वा चाभिप्रदक्षिणम् ।
प्रातिष्ठत महाबाहुर्दुर्योधनगृहान्प्रति ॥१०४॥
104. tāmāmantrya ca govindaḥ kṛtvā cābhipradakṣiṇam ,
prātiṣṭhata mahābāhurduryodhanagṛhānprati.
104. tām āmantrya ca govindaḥ kṛtvā ca abhipradakṣiṇam
prātiṣṭhata mahābāhuḥ duryodhanagṛhān prati
104. And having taken leave of her and performed a respectful circumambulation, Govinda, the mighty-armed one, set out towards Duryodhana's dwelling.
